Abstract
Although the use of aspirin has substantially reduced the risks of cardiovascular events and death, its potential mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In a previous study, we found that aspirin triggers cellular autophagy. In the present study, we aimed to determine the protective effects of aspirin on human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) and explore its underlying mechanisms. HCAECs were treated with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), angiotensin II (Ang-II), or high glucose (HG) with or without aspirin stimulation. The expression levels of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS), p-eNOS, LC3, p62, phosphor-nuclear factor kappa B (p-NF-κB), p-p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p-p38 MAPK), and Beclin-1 were detected via immunoblotting analysis. Concentrations of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) were measured via ELISA. NO levels were determined using the Griess reagent. Autophagic flux was tracked by tandem mRFP-GFP-tagged LC3. Results showed that aspirin increased eNOS level and reduced injury to the endothelial cells (ECs) caused by ox-LDL, Ang-II, and HG treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Aspirin also increased the LC3II/LC3I ratio, decreased p62 expression, and enhanced autophagic flux (autophagosome and autolysosome puncta) in the HCAECs. p-NF-κB and p-p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibition, sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1 secretion, and eNOS activity promotion by aspirin treatment were found to be dependent on Beclin-1. These results suggested that aspirin can protect ECs from ox-LDL-, Ang-II-, and HG-induced injury by activating autophagy in a Beclin-1-dependent manner.

Abstract
Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is a widely found emerging pollutant due to its heavy usage as a flame retardant. It is chemically stable and is very difficult to removal from water. The goal of this study was to explore whether iron monosulfide (FeS) can be used for reductive transformation of TCEP as FeS can react with a variety of halogenated organic contaminants. We used batch reactor systems to quantify the transformation reactions in the absence and presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, a common surfactant in aquatic environments). The results showed that, in the presence of CTAB (100 mg L-1), FeS exhibited much greater reactivity towards TCEP as 93% of initial TCEP had been transformed within 14 d of reaction. In the absence of CTAB, it required 710 d of reaction to achieve 97.3% reduction of initial TCEP. The enhancement of CTAB on TCEP transformation rate could be due to the facts that CTAB could stabilize FeS suspension against aggregation, protect FeS from rapid oxidation, and increase surface adsorption of TCEP on FeS. XPS analysis showed that both Fe(II) and S(-II) species on the FeS surface were involved in the reductive transformation of TCEP. Analysis of transformation products revealed that TCEP was reductively transformed into bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP), Cl- and C2H4. These findings showed that FeS may play an important role in the reductive transformation of TCEP when TCEP coexisting with CTAB in aquatic environments.

Abstract
RATIONALE Decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) is a notorious persistent organic pollutant widely found in the environment. Developing a compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) method is much needed in order to trace its transport and degradation processes and to evaluate the effectiveness of the remediation of BDE-209 in the environment. However, the conventional CSIA method, i.e. gas chromatography (GC) combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry, is not appropriate for BDE-209 because of its high thermal instability and incomplete combustion. METHODS We developed a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the separation and purification of BDE-209 that prevents its thermal reactivity as occurred in prior GC-based methods. The δ13 C value of the purified BDE-209 was determined using offline elemental analyzer isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA/IRMS). This two-step method was applied to determine the δ13 C values of BDE-209 in two commercial samples and to characterize carbon isotope fractionation associated with the debromination of BDE-209 via nanoscale zero-valent iron. RESULTS The mean values of daily δ13 C analyses of six replicates of a BDE-209 standard varied from -27.66‰ to -27.92‰, with a standard deviation ranging from 0.07‰ to 0.16‰, indicating a good reproducibility of EA/IRMS. The EA/IRMS analysis of the purified BDE-209 standard indicated no obvious isotope fractionation during the sample purification. The impurity content in commercial BDE-209 samples may contribute additional variation of the δ13 C values of BDE-209. The δ13 C values of BDE-209 gradually changed from -27.47 ± 0.37‰ to -24.59 ± 0.19‰ when 74% of the BDE-209 standard was degraded within 36 h. The estimated carbon isotope enrichment factor was -1.72 ± 0.18‰. CONCLUSIONS The two-step method based on HPLC and EA/IRMS avoids the thermal instability of BDE-209 in the traditional CSIA method. It offers a novel approach for elucidating the degradation mechanisms of BDE-209 in the environment and for source identification in contaminated sites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Six-monthly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) screening in cirrhotic patients has been recommended since 2011. HCC prognosis is associated with diagnosis at an early stage. We examined the prevalence and correlates of 6-monthly HCC surveillance in a cohort of HCV-infected cirrhotic patients. METHODS Data were obtained from the medical records of patients receiving care from four hospitals between January 2011 and December 2016. Frequencies and logistic regression were conducted. RESULTS Of 2,933 HCV-infected cirrhotic patients, most were ≥ 60 years old (68.5%), male (62.2%), White (65.8%), and had compensated cirrhosis (74.2%). The median follow-up period was 3.5 years. Among these patients, 10.9% were consistently screened 6 monthly and 21.4% were never screened. Patients with a longer history of cirrhosis (AOR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.80-0.93) were less likely to be screened 6 monthly while decompensated cirrhotic patients (AOR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.06-1.81) and cirrhotic patients between 18 and 44 years (AOR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.07-3.74) were more likely to be screened 6 monthly compared to compensated cirrhotic patients and patients 60 years and older respectively. There were no significant differences by race, gender, or insurance type. CONCLUSION The prevalence of consistent HCC surveillance remains low despite formalized recommendations. One in five patients was never surveilled. Patients with a longer history of cirrhosis were less likely to be surveilled consistently despite their greater HCC risk. Improving providers' knowledge about current HCC surveillance guidelines, educating patients about the benefits of consistent HCC surveillance, and systemic interventions like clinical reminders and standing HCC surveillance protocols can improve guideline-concordant surveillance in clinical practice.

Abstract
Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a typical chlorinated organophosphate ester (OPE), is an emerging contaminant of global concern because of its frequent occurrence, potential toxic effects, and persistence in the environment. In this study, we investigated the microbial TCEP biotransformation and the development of microbial communities in sediment microcosms with repeated TCEP amendments. The TCEP degradation fitted pseudo-zero-order kinetics, with reaction rates of 0.068 mg/(L h) after the first spike of 5 mg/L and 1.85 mg/(L h) after the second spike of 50 mg/L. TCEP was mainly degraded via phosphoester bond hydrolysis, evidenced by the production of bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) and mono-chloroethyl phosphate (MCEP). Bis(2-chloroethyl) 2-hydroxyethyl phosphate (TCEP-OH), phosphoric bis(2-chloroethyl) (2-oxoethyl) ester (TCEP-CHO), phosphoric acid bis(2-chloroethyl)(carboxymethyl) ester (TCEP-COOH), and 2-chloroethyl 2-hydroxyethyl hydrogen phosphate (BCEP-OH) were also identified as microbial TCEP transformation products, indicating that TCEP degradation may follow hydrolytic dechlorination and oxidation pathways. Microbial community compositions in TCEP-amended microcosms shifted away from control microcosms after the second TCEP spike. Burkholderiales and Rhizobiales were two prevalent bacterial guilds enriched in TCEP-amended microcosms and were linked to the higher abundances of alkaline and acid phosphatase genes and genes involved in the metabolism of 2-chloroethanol, a side product of TCEP hydrolysis, indicating their importance in degrading TCEP and its metabolites.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we investigated the effects of chondroitin disaccharide and its induced miR-29b and miR-199b on CD44 expression in mouse lymphocytes, as well as the effects of miR-29b and miR-199b on the development and progression of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice, an animal model of MS. The effects of chondroitin sulfate disaccharide on the changes in cellular immunity were investigated in EAE induced in mice by MOG and PTX. Real-time PCR and flow cytometry were used to investigate the effects of the anti-miRs and mimics of miR-29b and miR-199b on CD44 expression in mouse splenocytes after electroporation. After the transduction of antai-miRs and mimics of miR-29b and miR-199b into splenocytes, they were adoptively transferred into mice intravenously and the changes in immune cells and cytokines were analyzed by flow cytometry and ELISA. Our studies revealed that chondroitin disaccharide significantly up-regulated several specific miRNAs such as miR-29b and miR-199b, and thus dramatically inhibited EAE in mice. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that miR-29b and miR-199b could down-regulate the expression of CD44 and modulate the expression of IL-17 and IL-4 in the lymphocytes from EAE mice. Therefore, miR-29b and miR-199b could inhibit the expression of CD44, modulate the expression of IL-4 and IL-17, and thus suppress lymphocyte proliferation and migration, leading to significant inhibition of EAE development. Thus, miR-29b and miR-199b could also be used as therapeutic targets for EAE and MS.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the value of using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) derived parameters to differentiate thymic carcinoma and thymic lymphoma based on semi-quantitative and quantitative models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-nine pathologically confirmed anterior mediastinum tumours in 29 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study, including 15 thymic carcinoma and 14 lymphoma patients. All the patients underwent pre-treatment mediastinum DCE-MRI. Both semi-quantitative and quantitative parameters were calculated and the volume transfer constant Ktrans, the flux rate constant between extravascular extracellular space and plasma kep, the extravascular extracellular volume fraction ve were obtained based on a modified Tofts model. DCE-MRI derived parameters were compared between thymic carcinoma and thymic lymphoma groups. RESULTS Thymic carcinoma had significantly lower kep (p=0.040) and higher ve (p=0.018) than thymic lymphoma; however, there were no significant differences on Ktrans and semi-quantitative parameters between the two groups. ve had the highest area under the curve (cut-off value, 0.282; area under the curve, 0.748; sensitivity, 71.4%; specificity, 80%). The combination of kep and ve could increase the diagnostic performance significantly (area under the curve, 0.752; sensitivity, 57.1%; specificity, 93.3%). CONCLUSION DCE-MRI derived parameters may have value in the differentiating thymic carcinoma and thymic lymphoma.

Abstract
Disulfiram (DSF) exerts potent anticancer activity via the formation of chelates with copper or zinc ions in tumor tissues, but the low abundance of these ions in the tumor cannot sustain its antitumor activity. Herein, we show that a zwitterionic water-soluble N-oxide polymer, poly[2-(N-oxide-N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (OPDMA), can complex cupric ions and form nanogels (OPDMA/Cu), which efficiently deliver copper ions to tumor tissue to potentiate DSF significantly for effective antitumor therapy.

Abstract
Arsenic decontamination from groundwater is an urgent but still challenging task. Polystyrene-based hydrated ferric oxide (denoted as D201-HFO) nanocomposite is a new emerging current adsorbent for efficient arsenate removal in natural waters; the resulting materials can interact with arsenate, mainly driven by inner complexation and static interaction and the existing HA effects on adsorption was well investigated. Results reveals that low concentrations of HA (below 25 mg/L) coexistence led to negligible effects on As(V) removal, but high levels of HA (100 mg/L) exerted outstanding sorption competition to As(V) removal; kinetics results revealed the HA additions brought about the diffusion prolonging and capacity decline, due to the large molecule structure of HA. Column experiments further showed the slight decrease application capacity of 810 BV by HA additions, with satisfactory saturation capacity; significantly, the presence of HA also exerted negligible influences on regeneration performances. All the sorbents with or without HA could be well regenerated by binary alkaline and salt mixture.

Abstract
In this study, we analyzed 247 soil and 20 groundwater samples from a typical chemical site in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and simulated the solute transport of pollutant benzene with the GMS software, in order to reconstruct the distribution and migration mechanism of benzene series (BTX) pollutants. The detected concentrations of benzene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene exceeded the screening values in some soil and groundwater samples, indicating that the pollution of BTX in shallow groundwater was serious. Our simulation indicated an elliptical flow of benzene in groundwater (from northwest to southeast), mainly through convection, dispersion, and molecular diffusion. Along the vertical direction, the BTX was mainly distributed in the form of floating benzene, and some of the constituents were dissolved in the groundwater. Due to hydrodynamic mechanisms, the dissolved benzene tended to migrate faster and had hence a greater impact on the downstream groundwater. Through the model validation and analysis, we obtained a linear fitting correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.995 between the simulated and actual monitoring values, which indicates a good agreement between these two sets of data. The model had a high prediction accuracy, and could hence accurately determine the migration and distribution characteristics of benzene. Therefore, it provides a scientific basis for the accurate control and remediation of chemical contaminated sites in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Abstract
Severe contamination of decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209, an emerging persistent organic pollutant) in coastal marine sediments has posed a serious threat to the marine ecosystems. Anaerobic microbial degradation can affect the toxicity and environmental fate of BDE-209 in anoxic marine sediments. However, little is known about the anaerobic microbial degradation of BDE-209 in anoxic marine/coastal sediments. In this study, the anaerobic degradation of BDE-209 in microcosms containing coastal marine sediments from a contaminated bay located in Southern China was investigated. It was observed that over 70% of the BDE-209 (5 μmol) added to the anaerobic sediment microcosms disappeared after 90-day of incubation. Thirty-five debrominated products (tetra- to nonaBDEs) were identified by GC-MS. Remarkably, a majority of these products (i.e. 20 products, including BDE-52, -92, -101, -102, -103, -133, -144, -146, -150, -161, -171, -172, -175, -177, -178, -180, -182, -188, -193, -199) have not been previously reported in the literature on the anaerobic microbial degradation of BDE-209 in sediments. There was no preferential debromination among ortho-, meta-, and para-bromines on BDE-209 and higher-brominated diphenyl ethers were the predominant debromination products. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the relative abundances of 9 microbial genera in the sediment microcosms increased as the anaerobic degradation of BDE-209 progressed, indicating their involvements in the degradation process. Taken together, our findings provided new insights into the anaerobic microbial degradation of BDE-209 in anoxic marine sediments.

Abstract
African Americans (AAs) are an admixed population with widely varying proportion of West African ancestry (WAA). Here we report the correlation of WAA to gene expression and DNA methylation in AA-derived hepatocytes, a cell type important in disease and drug response. We perform mediation analysis to test whether methylation is a mediator of the effect of ancestry on expression. GTEx samples and a second cohort are used as validation. One hundred and thirty-one genes are associated with WAA (FDR < 0.10), 28 of which replicate and represent 220 GWAS phenotypes. Among PharmGKB pharmacogenes, VDR, PTGIS, ALDH1A1, CYP2C19, and P2RY1 nominally associate with WAA (p < 0.05). We find 1037 WAA-associated, differentially methylated regions (FDR < 0.05), with hypomethylated genes enriched in drug-response pathways. In conclusion, WAA contributes to variability in hepatocyte expression and DNA methylation with identified genes previously implicated for diseases disproportionately affecting AAs, including cardiovascular (PTGIS, PLAT) and renal (APOL1) disease, and drug response (CYP2C19).

Abstract
Objective: To compare the blood flow around the optic disc and related factors in patients with acute and chronic non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and healthy volunteers with small disc cups under the same anatomical structure. Methods: This was a prospective case-control study. NAION patients with unilateral onset and healthy volunteers of the same phase were included in the study conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital between February 2017 and September 2018. Patients with a course of ≤ 3 months were categorized in the acute phase of NAION, and those with a course of >3 months were in the chronic phase of NAION. Healthy volunteers were in the control group. All subjects underwent the examination of best corrected visual acuity converted to logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR), measurement of non-contact intraocular pressure, slit lamp examination, small pupil fundus examination, and axial measurement. Optical coherence tomography was used to measure the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layers (RNFL) and retinal ganglion cell complex (GCC). Optical coherence tomography angiography was used to measure the vessel density around the optic disc. NAION patients underwent the visual field examination. Analysis of variance, non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman coefficient was used for statistical analysis. Results: This study included 16 patients with acute phase of NAION, aged (57±9) years, 6 males and 10 females. There were 17 patients with chronic disease, aged (56±10) years, 7 males and 10 females. There were 15 healthy controls, aged (57±10) years old, 6 males and 9 females. There were no significant differences in age and gender between the groups (both P>0.05). The RNFL and the GCC in the NAION chronic phase group were significantly thinner than those in the acute phase group [(78±38) μm vs. (191±99) μm, (75±19) μm vs. (98±28) μm; t=4.389, 2.758; both P<0.05]. The cup/disc area ratio, cup/disc vertical diameter ratio and cup/disc horizontal diameter ratio in the chronic phase group were larger than those in the acute phase group [0.18 (0.11, 0.31) vs. 0.05 (0.01, 0.18), 0.45 (0.39, 0.56) vs. 0.22 (0.11, 0.41), 0.39 (0.28, 0.54) vs. 0.20 (0.07, 0.42)], and the difference was statistically significant (U=212.000, 208.000, 205.000; all P<0.05). Compared with the optic disc vessel density in the control group (53%±6%), there was a significant decrease in the acute phase group and the chronic phase group (45%±7%, 41%±8%; t=3.705, 4.940; both P<0.01). The blood vessel density in the nasal inferior of the chronic phase group was significantly lower than that in the acute phase group (36%±8% vs. 42%±7%, P=0.039), other sections didn't have significant difference (all P>0.05). There were tortuous capillaries in 8/16 of the acute phase cases, with a low blood flow density and visual field defect in relative positions. Correlation analysis showed that the whole density and peripapillary density in the NAION patients were negatively correlated with LogMAR, mean visual field defect, cup/disc area ratio, focal loss of volume of GCC and general loss of volume of GCC (r=-0.510, -0.733, -0.372, -0.532, -0.648; all P<0.01), but positively correlated with GCC and RNFL thickness (r=0.604, 0.508; both P<0.01). Conclusions: The optic disc vessel density in the acute phase and chronic phase of NAION is significantly reduced. The vessel density in the nasal area of the chronic phase is significantly reduced compared with the acute phase. The vessel density is correlated with visual acuity, visual field defect, disc indexes, thickness of RNFL and GCC. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2019, 55: 677-686).

Abstract
We report the first neutral and water-soluble polymer capable of strong mitochondrial targeting in vitro and in vivo, zwitterionic poly[2-(N-oxide-N,N-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (OPDEA). OPDEA is quickly internalized via macropinocytosis by various cancer cells and transferred into the mitochondria, which slightly lowers the mitochondrial membrane potential as determined by the JC-1 assay.
