Abstract
A batteryless remotely-controlled locomotive IC utilizing electrolytic bubbles as propelling force is realized in 0.35 μm CMOS technology. Without any external components, such as magnets and on-board coils, the bare IC is wirelessly powered and controlled by a 10 MHz ASK modulated signal with RS232 control commands to execute movement in four moving directions and with two speeds. The receiving coil and electrolysis electrodes are all integrated on the locomotive chip. The experiment successfully demonstrated that the bare IC moved on the surface of an electrolyte with a speed up to 0.3 mm/s and change moving directions according to the commands. The total power consumptions of the chip are 207.4 μW and 180 μ W while the output electrolysis voltages are 2 V and 1.3 V, respectively.

Abstract
A Nd:YLF laser at cryogenic temperature is demonstrated for the first time with orthogonally polarized simultaneous emission at 1047 nm and 1053 nm. By exploring the temperature dependence of the fluorescence and the absorption spectra from the Nd:YLF crystal, the feasibility of simultaneous emission at low temperature is achieved. Due to the local heating from the pump absorption, the optimal temperature with respect to the pump power for balancing output powers of simultaneous emission is thoroughly explored. At the optimal temperature of 138 K, the total output power of the simultaneous emission can reach 3.1 W at an incident pump power of 7.9 W, corresponding to the optical to optical slope efficiency up to 43%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Funnel technique is a method used for the insertion of screw into thoracic pedicle. AIM To evaluate the biomechanical characteristics of thoracic pedicle screw placement using the Funnel technique, trying to provide biomechanical basis for clinical application of this technology. METHODS 14 functional spinal units (T6 to T10) were selected from thoracic spine specimens of 14 fresh adult cadavers, and randomly divided into two groups, including Funnel technique group (n = 7) and Magerl technique group (n = 7). The displacement-stiffness and pull-out strength in all kinds of position were tested and compared. RESULTS Two fixed groups were significantly higher than that of the intact state (P < 0.05) in the spinal central axial direction, compression, anterior flexion, posterior bending, lateral bending, axial torsion, but there were no significant differences between two fixed groups (P > 0.05). The mean pull-out strength in Funnel technique group (789.09 ± 27.33) was lower than that in Magerl technique group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The Funnel technique for the insertion point of posterior bone is a safe and accurate technique for pedicle screw placement. It exhibited no effects on the stiffness of spinal column, but decreased the pull-out strength of pedicle screw. Therefore, the funnel technique in the thoracic spine affords an alternative for the standard screw placement.

Abstract
To predict the incidence of moderate-to-severe patient-reported xerostomia among head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Multivariable normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models were developed by using quality of life questionnaire datasets from 152 patients with HNSCC and 84 patients with NPC. The primary endpoint was defined as moderate-to-severe xerostomia after IMRT. The numbers of predictive factors for a multivariable logistic regression model were determined using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) with bootstrapping technique. Four predictive models were achieved by LASSO with the smallest number of factors while preserving predictive value with higher AUC performance. For all models, the dosimetric factors for the mean dose given to the contralateral and ipsilateral parotid gland were selected as the most significant predictors. Followed by the different clinical and socio-economic factors being selected, namely age, financial status, T stage, and education for different models were chosen. The predicted incidence of xerostomia for HNSCC and NPC patients can be improved by using multivariable logistic regression models with LASSO technique. The predictive model developed in HNSCC cannot be generalized to NPC cohort treated with IMRT without validation and vice versa.

Abstract
Alpha1-AR antagonists are currently first-line therapy for lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). In this study, we report the synthesis of a new series of arylpiperazine derivatives containing acetophenone (3-17) which possess alpha1-adrenoreceptor blocking activity. The in vitro alpha1-adrenoreceptor blocking activity of each derivative was first screened using rabbit thoracic aortic rings by measuring the relaxation response (%) activated by (-)-noradrenaline (3 microM). Compounds 6 and 7 with 2,5-dimethoxy and 2-ethoxy substituent were found to have significant vasodilatory effect. Since the presence of a chiral carbon in the structure, 6 and 7 together with their enantiomers 14-17 were further evaluated by testing diastolic effect on rabbit thoracic aorta, prostate and bladder smooth muscle. The S-enantiomer was found to have more potent diastolic activity than the R-enantiomer and racemate, 17 being the most effective alpha1-adrenoreceptor antagonist. In order to assess tissue selectivity, the antagonistic effect of 17 on the (-)-noradrenaline induced contractile response of isolated rat vas deferens (alpha(1A)), spleen (alpha(1B)) and aorta (alpha(1D)) was characterized finally. Compared with naftopidil (1) and terazosin, compound 17 exhibited higher selectivity (18-fold) for the alpha(1D)-adrenoceptor subtype as compared to the alpha(1B)-adrenoceptor subtype, indicating less cardiovascular side effects for the treatment of LUTS/BPH. These data suggest that the acetophenone is a new effective adrenergic receptor ligand as well as incentivizes further research regarding pharmacological properties of chiral molecules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Novalis linear accelerator system, a well developed modality, can be used for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The aim of this study was to clarify the efficiency and safety of Novalis SRS in treating vestibular schwannomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS This 4-year retrospective study enrolled 23 patients with 26 vestibular schwannomas (3 patients suffered from neurofibromatosis Type II). Five patients had undergone tumor resection. All 26 tumors were treated using Novalis SRS, with a prescription dose that varied between 10 and 16Gy (mean, 11.8±1.7Gy). The average follow-up period was 56.5±22.1 months (range, 17-87 months). RESULTS There were 9 men and 14 women. Their mean age at the time of treatment was 54.0±14.6 years (range, 27-84 years). On average, the original size of the tumor was 19.0±7.2mm in maximal diameter (range, 4.6-39.9mm). At the last follow-up, 20 tumors had regressed (76.9%), and there was no observed change in the size of 3 tumors (11.5%). Three of 26 tumors (11.5%) enlarged more than 2mm in one direction. Thus the ultimate radiological tumor control rate was 88.5% (23/26). In addition, 20 (87.0%) patients retained their pre-irradiation hearing function. Facial and trigeminal nerve function were both preserved in all patients. No death occurred during the follow-up, and no patient was treated with a second SRS or converted to tumor resection. CONCLUSION Novalis SRS is a reliable treatment option for vestibular schwannomas. With an optimal radiation dose, satisfactory tumor control can be achieved while preserving cranial nerve function.

Abstract
We demonstrate a high-repetition-rate millijoule passively Q-switched eye-safe Nd:YVO(4) laser pumped by a quasi-CW diode stack. A theoretical analysis has been explored for the design criteria of generating TEM(n,0) mode in the diode-stack directly side-pumping configuration. We successfully generate TEM(n,0) modes at 1064 nm by adjusting the gain medium with respected to the laser axis. We further observe the spatial cleaning ability for generating an nearly TEM(0,0) mode output at 1573 nm with a monolithic OPO cavity. At the repetition rate up to 200 Hz, the output pulse energy reaches 1.21 mJ with the threshold pump energy of 17.9 mJ.

Abstract
We originally present a novel tactic to accomplish a compact efficient dual-wavelength synchronously mode-locked laser by physically combining the Nd:YVO4 crystal to the Nd:GdVO4 crystal as a composite gain medium. With the developed method, the total output power at 1.06 μm could be effectually produced to reach 1.3 W under the optimally balanced two-color intensities. The corresponding mode-locked pulse width and repetition rate are measured to be 47 ps and 2.86 GHz, respectively. Through the optical beating between two carrier frequencies of dual-color synchronous pulses, a train of 0.32 THz ultrashort pulses is further generated with the effective duration of down to 1.6 ps.

Abstract
Patients with cervical cancer diagnosed with a para-aortic lymph node (PALN) metastasis by computed tomography (CT) scan were analyzed to identify associated prognostic factors. A total of 55 patients were reviewed, and 27 of these patients underwent extended-field radiotherapy (EFRT). The median PALN dose in patients receiving EFRT was 45 Gy (range, 27-57.6 Gy). Of the 55 patients, 28 underwent pelvic radiotherapy (RT); concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) was administered to 41 patients. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the actuarial rate. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Five-year overall survival (OS) rates were 41% and 17.9% in patients undergoing EFRT and pelvic RT (P = 0.030), respectively. Age < 53 years (P = 0.023), FIGO Stage I-II (P = 0.002), and treatment with EFRT (P = 0.003) were independent predictors of better OS. The use of CCRT (P = 0.014), Stage I-II (P = 0.002), and treatment using EFRT (P = 0.036) were independent predictors of distant metastasis. In patients undergoing EFRT plus CCRT, the 5-year OS was 50%. Three-year PALN disease-free rates were 8.8%, 57.9% and 100% (P < 0.001) in CCRT patients who received PALN doses of 0 Gy, ≤45 Gy and ≥50.4 Gy, respectively. Although PALN metastasis is thought to be distant metastasis in cervical cancer, EFRT plus CCRT shows a good outcome, particularly in younger patients in an early FIGO stage. Cervical cancer with a PALN metastasis should not be considered incurable. Doses ≥50.4 Gy for treating PALN may result in better disease control.

Abstract
Fourteen new cassane diterpenoids, caesalminaxins A-L (1-14), and three known compounds were isolated from the seeds of Caesalpinia minax. Among the new diterpenoids, compounds 3 and 4 possess a rare spiro C/D ring system. The C-16 epimeric mixture 1/2 has an unprecedented carbon skeleton, presumably derived from 3 by cleavage of the C-13-C-14 bond. Compound 5 is the first example of a cassane diterpenoid with a spiro A/B ring system. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR analysis, and the absolute configurations of 3, 4, 9, and 11 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Biosynthesis pathways for 1/2, 3, and 5 are postulated. Compounds 4, 8, and the known bonducellpin D exhibited moderate activity against four tested human cancer cell lines, HepG-2, K562, HeLa, and Du145.

Abstract
AIMS Preventing stroke through endovascular treatment with vertebral artery stent remains a great challenge due to the occurrence of an in-stent restenosis. MATERIALS & METHODS In this study, a retrospective analysis was conducted in 90 patients who had been treated with VAS between 2004 and 2011 in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. Patients were followed up at 3 months, 6 months,and 1 year after VAS treatment and annually thereafter. For each time point, neurological function tests, vessel ultrasound and computer tomography angiography were performed to preliminarily screen the vessel stenosis. Digital subtraction angiography was used to verify the narrow sign on CTA or ultrasound. Clinical features of each patient including clopidogrel metabolization genes (CYP2C19, CYP3A4, and P2Y12) were recorded with purpose to investigate the possible risk factors for the development of ISR. RESULTS Single factor analysis dem-onstrated that hyperlipidemia (P < 0.05) and CYP2C19 (P < 0.01) loss-of-function geno-type increased the likelihood of ISR. A multiple logistic cox regression analysis also showed that stroke patients with hyperlipidemia (HR 3.719, 95% CI: 1.094-12.637, P = 0.035), and CYP2C19 loss-of-function genotype (HR 2.959, 95% CI: 1.325-6.610, P = 0.008) were more likely to suffer from ISR. Furthermore, CYP2C19 alleles were mainly divided into three groups: wt/wt (CYP2C19 *1/*1), wt/m (CYP2C19 *1/*2 and *1/*3), and m/m (CYP2C19 *2/*2,*2/*3 and*3/*3). Recurrent rate of ischemic stroke in m/m and wt/m groups was higher than the wt/wt group (OR: 0.141, 95% CI: 0.016-1.221, P = 0.042). CONCLUSION The study leads to the conclusion that hyperlipidemia and CYP2C19 impotency are possible risk factors for the development of ISR in VAS-treated patients with ischemic. Moreover, VAS-treated patients with CYP2C19 impotency were susceptible to recurrent stroke during our 54-month follow-up.

Abstract
This paper presents a highly-integrated DNA detection SoC, where several kinds of cantilever DNA sensors, a readout circuit, an MCU, voltage regulators, and a wireless transceiver, are integrated monolithically in a 0.35 μm CMOS Bio-MEMS process. The cantilever-based biosensors with embedded piezoresistors aim to transduce DNA hybridization into resistance variation without cumbersome labeling process. To improve detection sensitivity for low DNA concentration use, an oscillator-based self-calibrated readout circuit with high precision is proposed to convert small resistance variation ( of original resistance) of the sensor into adequate frequency variation and further into digital data. Moreover, its wireless capacity enables isolation of the sample solution from electrical wire lines and facilitates data transmission. To demonstrate the effectiveness of full system, it is applied to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA. The experimental results show that it has the capability to distinguish between one base-pair (1-bp) mismatch DNAs and match DNAs and achieves a limit of detection (LOD) of less than 1 pM.

Abstract
We experimentally explore the fluorescent spectrum of the Nd:YAP crystal to manifest the feasibility of tunable single- and multi-wavelength operations in the (4)F3/2 → (4)I11/2 transition. An intracavity etalon is subsequently exploited to effectively select spectral lines at 1073, 1080, and 1084 nm with the tunabilities of 0.56, 1.13, and 0.1 nm, respectively. We also experimentally obtain multi-wavelength oscillations among various intermanifold lines in the Nd:YAP crystal with the output powers on the order of several watts for each group. Employing the Cr(4+):YAG crystal to realize the passively Q-switched operation, the maximum average output powers as high as 2.3 and 3.5 W for 1073 and 1080 nm are obtained. The corresponding pulse energies at 1073 and 1080 nm are up to 177 and 159 μJ, respectively.

Abstract
Electrical impedance is one of the most frequently used parameters for characterizing material properties. The resistive and capacitive characteristics of tissue may be revealed by electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as electrical biopsy. This technique could be used to monitor the sequelae after irradiation. In this study, rat intestinal tissues after irradiation were assessed by EIS system based on commercially available integrated circuits. The EIS results were fitted to a resistor-capacitor circuit model to determine the electrical properties of the tissue. The variations in the electrical characteristics of the tissue were compared to radiation injury score (RIS) by morphological and histological findings. The electrical properties, based on receiver operation curve (ROC) analysis, strongly reflected the histological changes with excellent diagnosis performance. The results of this study suggest that electrical biopsy reflects histological changes after irradiation. This approach may significantly augment the evaluation of tissue after irradiation. It could provide rapid results for decision making in monitoring radiation sequelae prospectively.

Multifunctional liposomes loaded with quantum dots (QDs) and anticancer drugs were prepared for simultaneous bioimaging and drug delivery. Different formulations, including cationic, PEGylated and deformable liposomes, were compared for their theranostic efficiency. We had evaluated the physicochemical characteristics of these liposomes. The developed liposomes were examined using experimental platforms of cytotoxicity, cell migration, cellular uptake, in vivo melanoma imaging and drug accumulation in tumors. The average size of various nanocomposite liposomes was found to be 92–134 nm. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of QDs within liposomal bilayers. The incorporation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Span 20 into the liposomes greatly increased the fluidity of the bilayers. The liposomes provided sustained release of camptothecin and irinotecan. The cytotoxicity and cell migration assay demonstrated superior activity of cationic liposomes compared with other carriers. Cationic liposomes also showed a significant fluorescence signal in melanoma cells after internalization. The liposomes were intratumorally administered to a melanoma-bearing mouse. Cationic liposomes showed the brightest fluorescence in tumors, followed by classical liposomes. This signal could last for up to 24 h for cationic nanosystems. Intratumoral accumulation of camptothecin from free control was 35 nmol g(−1); it could be increased to 50 nmol g(−1) after loading with cationic liposomes. However, encapsulation of irinotecan into liposomes did not further increase intratumoral drug accumulation. Cationic liposomes were preferable to other liposomes as nanocarriers in both bioimaging and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Aim: The authors studied the bioimaging and delivery of drug-entrapped, nanostructured lipid carriers with quantum dots (QDs), called QDNLCs, for integrating imaging and therapy. Materials & methods: Nanostructured lipid carriers consisting of QDs, including lipophilic QDs, carboxyl-function QDs or PEG QDs were prepared. Application of the nanocarriers was evaluated by cytotoxicity, cell migration, cellular uptake, in vivo real-time tumor monitoring and drug accumulation in tumors. Results: All QDNLCs exhibited a size of 245 nm with camptothecin encapsulation of >99%. Cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles against melanoma cells was superior to that of free camptothecin. Carboxylic acid-conjugated QDNLCs (C-QDNLCs) showed the highest cell internalization and in vivo fluorescence labeling compared with the other carriers. Real-time bioimaging demonstrated that C-QDNLCs maintained signaling in tumors for at least 24 h. The camptothecin accumulation in melanomas increased by 6.4-fold after incorporation into C-QDNLCs. Conclusion: For the first time, nanostructured lipid carriers were coordinated with QDs and an anticancer drug to provide efficient tumor imaging and drug delivery. Abstract
Eleven new guanidine alkaloids, plumbagines A-G (2-8) and plumbagosides A-D (9-12), as well as two known analogues (1, 13), were isolated from the aerial parts of Plumbago zeylanica. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses including 1D and 2D NMR, MS, IR, and CD methods. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of its derivative (1a).

Abstract
A frameless radiosurgery system is using a set of thermoplastic mask for fixation and stereoscopic X-ray imaging for alignment. The accuracy depends on mask fixation and imaging. Under certain circumstances, the guidance images may contain insufficient bony structures, resulting in lesser accuracy. A virtual isocenter function is designed for such scenarios. In this study, we investigated the immobilization and the indications for using virtual isocenter. Twenty-four arbitrary imaginary treatment targets (ITTs) in phantom were evaluated. The external Localizer with positioner films was used as reference. The alignments by using actual and virtual isocenter in image guidance were compared. The deviation of the alignment after mask removing and then resetting was also checked. The results illustrated that the mean deviation between the alignment by image guidance using actual isocenter (Iso(img)) and the localizer(Iso(loc)) was 2.26 mm ± 1.16 mm (standard deviation, SD), 1.66 mm ± 0.83 mm for using virtual isocenter. The deviation of the alignment by the image guidance using actual isocenter to the localizer before and after mask resetting was 7.02 mm ± 5.8 mm. The deviations before and after mask resetting were insignificant for the target center from skull edge larger than 80 mm on craniocaudal direction. The deviations between the alignment using actual and virtual isocenter in image guidance were not significant if the minimum distance from target center to skull edge was larger or equal to 30 mm. Due to an unacceptable deviation after mask resetting, the image guidance is necessary to improve the accuracy of frameless immobilization. A treatment isocenter less than 30 mm from the skull bone should be an indication for using virtual isocenter to align in image guidance. The virtual isocenter should be set as caudally as possible, and the sella of skull should be the ideal point.

Abstract
A Nd:YVO4 crystal consisting of three segments with different doping concentrations is originally developed for power scaling in diode-end-pumped solid-state laser. We systematically make a comparison of laser characteristics between the multi-segmented and conventional composite crystals to show the feasibility of using gain medium with multiple doping concentrations for power scale-up in end-pumped laser without introducing significant thermally accompanied effects. We further construct a dual-end-pumped actively Q-switched oscillator at 1064 nm to verify the usefulness of our crystal design, where the largest pulse energy of 1.06 mJ and the highest output power of 45 W are efficiently generated.

Abstract
Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI) has been used to study tumor response to treatment for many years. In this study, the modified full width at half-maximum (mFWHM), calculated from the wash-in slope histogram, is proposed as a parameter for the evaluation of changes in tumor heterogeneity which respond to radiotherapy. Twenty-five patients with brain tumors were evaluated and divided into the nonresponder group (n = 11) and the responder group (n = 14) according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST). All selected tumors were evaluated by mFWHM ratios of post- to pre-therapy (the ratio was defined as the therapeutic mFWHM ratio, TMR). The changes in kurtosis of the histograms and the averaged K(trans) within a tumor were also calculated for comparison. The receiver operating characteristic analysis and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to examine the diagnosis ability. The TMR values were significantly higher in nonresponders than in responders (p < 0.001). When compared with the other two parameters, the proposed method also demonstrated better sensitivity and specificity. When adopting the TMR for the estimation of prognosis after therapy, there was a significant difference between the population survival curves. In conclusion, the derived mFWHM reflects tumor heterogeneity, and the ability to depict patient survival probability from TMR corresponds well with that from RECIST. The results reveal that, in brain tumors, progression may be exhibited not only by tumor size, but also by tumor heterogeneity.

Abstract
A singly-resonant intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO), pumped by a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, is systematically investigated by means of a series of the output mirrors with various reflectivities for the fundamental wavelength at 1064 nm. Experimental results reveal that the output mirror with partial reflectivity instead of high reflection at 1064 nm not only is practicable to avoid the optical coatings damaged, but also enhances the dual-wavelength output efficiency for the OPO signal and fundamental laser waves. The overall optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is enhanced from 6.4% to 8.2% for the reflectivity decreasing from 99.8% to 90%.

Abstract
We originally utilize a nearly hemispherical cavity to accomplish the energy scale-up for a high-repetition-rate nanosecond pulsed pumped Nd:YLF laser passively Q-switched by the Cr(4+):YAG saturable absorber. This compact laser is able to efficiently generate pulse energy as large as 1.38 mJ and pulse width as short as 5 ns under a pulse repetition rate of 100 Hz. Further employing the developed Nd:YLF laser to perform extracavity harmonic generations, the maximum pulse energies of 490 μJ at 527 nm and 360 μJ at 351 nm are achieved with the shortest pulse duration of 4 ns.

Abstract
We exploit an ultra-low-magnification unstable resonator to develop a high-pulse-energy side-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YLF/Cr⁴⁺:YAG laser with improving beam quality. A wedged laser crystal is employed in the cavity to control the emissions at 1047 nm and 1053 nm independently through the cavity alignment. The pulse energies at 1047 nm and 1053 nm are found to be 19 mJ and 23 mJ, respectively. The peak powers for both wavelengths are higher than 2 MW. Furthermore, the developed Nd:YLF lasers are employed to pump a monolithic optical parametric oscillator for confirming the applicability in nonlinear wavelength conversions.

Abstract
In recent years, the utilization of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the field of neuroscience has forever changed the approach to nerve-related research. The array of novel properties CNTs possess allows them to interact with neurons at the nanodimensional scale. In this study, a CNT rope substrate is developed to allow the electrical stimulation of neural stem cells (NSCs) in culture medium and the in situ observation of the response of these stem cells after stimulation. CNTs are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and prepared into a ropelike structure with a diameter of 1 mm and length of 1.5 cm. NSCs are differentiated on the CNT rope substrate while the direction of neurite outgrowth, phenotype, and maturity of the NSCs are analyzed. Fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that neurite extension favors the direction of the spiral topography on the CNT rope. NSCs plated on CNT ropes are boosted towards differentiated neurons in the early culture stage when compared to conventional tissue culture plates via the analysis of neuronal gene and protein expressions by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunostaining, respectively. Furthermore, a set of electrical stimulation parameters (5 mV, 0.5 mA, 25 ms intermittent stimulation) promotes neuronal maturity while also increasing the speed of neurite outgrowth. These results indicate that an electroconductive CNT rope substrate along with electrical stimulation may have a synergistic effect on promoting neurite elongation and boosting effects on the differentiation of NSCs into mature neuronal cells for therapeutic application in neural regeneration.
