Abstract
Human language units are hierarchical, and reading acquisition involves integrating multisensory information (typically from auditory and visual modalities) to access meaning. However, it is unclear how the brain processes and integrates language information at different linguistic units (words, phrases, and sentences) provided simultaneously in auditory and visual modalities. To address the issue, we presented participants with sequences of short Chinese sentences through auditory, visual, or combined audio-visual modalities while electroencephalographic responses were recorded. With a frequency tagging approach, we analyzed the neural representations of basic linguistic units (i.e. characters/monosyllabic words) and higher-level linguistic structures (i.e. phrases and sentences) across the 3 modalities separately. We found that audio-visual integration occurs in all linguistic units, and the brain areas involved in the integration varied across different linguistic levels. In particular, the integration of sentences activated the local left prefrontal area. Therefore, we used continuous theta-burst stimulation to verify that the left prefrontal cortex plays a vital role in the audio-visual integration of sentence information. Our findings suggest the advantage of bimodal language comprehension at hierarchical stages in language-related information processing and provide evidence for the causal role of the left prefrontal regions in processing information of audio-visual sentences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19-related acute illness is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). OBJECTIVE These evidence-based guidelines from the American Society of Hematology (ASH) are intended to support patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals in making decisions about the use of anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19. METHODS ASH formed a multidisciplinary guideline panel that included patient representatives and applied strategies to minimize potential bias from conflicts of interest. The McMaster University GRADE Centre supported the guideline development process and performed systematic evidence reviews (through November 2021). The panel prioritized clinical questions and outcomes according to their importance for clinicians and patients. The panel used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to assess evidence and make recommendations, which were subject to public comment. This is an update to guidelines published in February 2021 as part of the living phase of these guidelines. RESULTS The panel made one additional recommendation. The panel issued a conditional recommendation in favor of therapeutic-intensity over prophylactic-intensity anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-related acute illness who do not have suspected or confirmed VTE. The panel emphasized the need for an individualized assessment of risk of thrombosis and bleeding. The panel also noted that heparin (unfractionated or low molecular weight) may be preferred because of a preponderance of evidence with this class of anticoagulants. CONCLUSION This conditional recommendation was based on very low certainty in the evidence, underscoring the need for additional, high-quality, randomized controlled trials comparing different intensities of anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-related acute illness.

Abstract
Background Differentiating multiple pulmonary lesions as multiple primary lung cancer (MLC) or intra-pulmonary metastasis (IPM) is critical. Lung cancer also has a high genetic heterogeneity, which influenced the treatment strategy. Genetic information may aid in tracing lineage information on multiple lung lesions. This study applied comprehensive genomic profiling to decipher the intrinsic genetics of multiple lung lesions. Methods Sixty-six lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) tumor lesions (FFEP) archived from 30 patients were included in this study. The 508 cancer-related genes were evaluated by targeted next-generation sequencing (MGI-seq 2000). Results The study included a total of 30 LUADs (66 samples). The majority of tumors demonstrated intra-tumoral heterogeneity. Two hundred twenty-four mutations were detected by sequencing the 66 samples. We investigated the driver gene mutations of NSCLC patients with multiple lesions. EGFR was the most frequently (48/198) mutated driver gene. The codons in EGFR mainly affected by mutations were p.L858R (18/66 [27.3%]) and exon 19del (8/66 [12.1%]). In addition, additional driver genes were found, including TP53, BRAF, ERBB2, MET, and PIK3CA. We also found that the inter-component heterogeneity of different lesions and more than two different mutation types of EGFR were detected in seven patients with two lesions (P3, P10, P24, P25, P28, P29, and P30). The TMB values of different lesions in each patient were different in 26 patients (except P4, P5, P14, and P30). Conclusions Comprehensive genomic profiling should be applied to distinguishing the nature of multiple lung lesions irrespective of radiologic and histologic diagnoses.

Abstract
Mechanosensation is essential for normal gastrointestinal (GI) function, and abnormalities in mechanosensation are associated with GI disorders. There are several mechanosensitive ion channels in the GI tract, namely transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, Piezo channels, two-pore domain potassium (K2p) channels, voltage-gated ion channels, large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (BKCa) channels, and the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). These channels are located in many mechanosensitive intestinal cell types, namely enterochromaffin (EC) cells, interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and intrinsic and extrinsic enteric neurons. In these cells, mechanosensitive ion channels can alter transmembrane ion currents in response to mechanical forces, through a process known as mechanoelectrical coupling. Furthermore, mechanosensitive ion channels are often associated with a variety of GI tract disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and GI tumors. Mechanosensitive ion channels could therefore provide a new perspective for the treatment of GI diseases. This review aims to highlight recent research advances regarding the function of mechanosensitive ion channels in the GI tract. Moreover, it outlines the potential role of mechanosensitive ion channels in related diseases, while describing the current understanding of interactions between the GI tract and mechanosensitive ion channels.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the risk factors and antibiotics-resistant patterns of invasive Acinetobacter baumannii infection in Children. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in 6 tertiary hospitals from January 2016 to December 2018. The basic information, clinical data and the results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing were collected from the 98 pediatric inpatients with Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from blood or cerebrospinal fluid and analyzed. According to the susceptibility of the infected strains to carbapenems, they were divided into carbapenem-sensitive Acinetobacter baumannii (CSAB) group and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) group. According to the possible sources of infection, they were divided into nosocomial infection group and community infection group. Chi-square test or Fisher exact test were used to analyze categorical variables and rank sum test were used to analyze continuous variables. The risk factors of invasive CRAB infection in children were analyzed by Logistic regression. Result: There were 56 males and 42 females in 98 cases. The onset age of patients was 8 (2, 24) months. There were 62 cases (63%) from rural area. A total of 87 cases (89%) were confirmed with bloodstream infection, and 12 cases (12%) confirmed with meningitis (1 case was accompanied with bloodstream infection). In these patients, 66 cases (67%) received invasive medical procedures or surgery, 54 cases (55%) received carbapenems-containing therapy. Twenty-four cases were infected with CRAB, and 74 cases with CSAB. The onset age of cases in CRAB group was lower than that in CSAB group (4 (1, 9) vs. 10 (4, 24) months, Z=-2.16, P=0.031). The proportions of hospitalization in intensive care unit, carbapenem antibiotics using, pneumonia and adverse prognosis in CRAB group were higher than those in CSAB group (6 cases (25%) vs. 4 cases (5%), 18 cases (75%) vs. 36 cases (49%), 17 cases (71%) vs. 17 cases (23%), 6 cases (25%) vs. 4 cases (5%), χ2=5.61, 5.09, 18.32, 5.61, all P<0.05). Seventy-seven cases were nosocomial infection and 21 cases were hospital-acquired infection. The proportion of children hospitalized in high-risk wards for nosocomial infections, length of hospitalization, number of antimicrobial therapy received and duration of antimicrobial therapy were higher in the hospital associated infection group than those in the community acquired infection group (all P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that children from rural area (OR=8.42, 95%CI 1.45-48.88), prior mechanical ventilation (OR=12.62, 95%CI 1.31-121.76), and prior antibiotic therapy (OR=4.90, 95%CI 1.35-17.72) were independent risk factors for CRAB infection. The resistance percentage of CSAB isolates to many classes of antibiotics was <6% except to gentamicin, which was as high as 20% (13/65). All CRAB isolates of resistant to ampicillin-sulbactam (20/20), cefepime (23/23), piperacillin (17/17), meropenem (23/23) and imipenem (24/24) were 100%. The resistance percentage to other antibiotics were up to 42%-96%. Conclusions: Most of invasive Acinetobacter baumannii infection in children in China are hospital-acquired. The outcome of invasive CRAB infection was poorer than that of CSAB infection. The drug resistance rate of CRAB strains isolated is high. Living in rural area, prior invasive mechanical ventilation and prior antibiotic therapy were independent risk factors for invasive CRAB infection. The prevention and control of nosocomial infection and appropriate use of antibiotics to reduce Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

Abstract
Male reproductive system ageing is closely associated with deficiency in testosterone production due to loss of functional Leydig cells, which are differentiated from stem Leydig cells (SLCs). However, the relationship between SLC differentiation and ageing remains unknown. In addition, active lipid metabolism during SLC differentiation in the reproductive system requires transportation and processing of substrates among multiple organelles, e.g., mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER), highlighting the importance of interorganelle contact. Here, we show that SLC differentiation potential declines with disordered intracellular homeostasis during SLC senescence. Mechanistically, loss of the intermediate filament Nestin results in lower differentiation capacity by separating mitochondria-ER contacts (MERCs) during SLC senescence. Furthermore, pharmacological intervention by melatonin restores Nestin-dependent MERCs, reverses SLC differentiation capacity and alleviates male reproductive system ageing. These findings not only explain SLC senescence from a cytoskeleton-dependent MERCs regulation mechanism, but also suggest a promising therapy targeting SLC differentiation for age-related reproductive system diseases. The regulatory mechanisms contributing to male reproductive ageing are unknown. Here, the authors show that Nestin-dependent mito-ER contacts (MERCs) regulate stem Leydig cell (SLC) senescence and provide insights into SLCs-targeting therapies.

Abstract
Conversion-type cathodes such as metal fluorides, especially FeF2 and FeF3 , are potential candidates to replace intercalation cathodes for the next generation of lithium ion batteries. However, the application of iron fluorides is impeded by their poor electronic conductivity, iron/fluorine dissolution, and unstable cathode electrolyte interfaces (CEIs). A facile route to fabricate a mechanical strong electrode with hierarchical electron pathways for FeF2 nanoparticles is reported here. The FeF2 /Li cell demonstrates remarkable cycle performances with a capacity of 300 mAh g-1 after a record long 4500 cycles at 1C. Meanwhile, a record stable high area capacity of over 6 mAh cm-2 is achieved. Furthermore, ultra-high rate capabilities at 20C and 6C for electrodes with low and high mass loading, respectively, are attained. Advanced electron microscopy reveals the formation of stable CEIs. The results demonstrate that the construction of viable electronic connections and favorable CEIs are the key to boost the electrochemical performances of FeF2 cathode.

Abstract
In this article, a review of a series of applications of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fluidic Atomic Force Microscopy (fluidic AFM, hereafter fluidFM) in single-cell studies is presented. AFM applications involving single-cell and extracellular vesicle (EV) studies, colloidal force spectroscopy, and single-cell adhesion measurements are discussed. FluidFM is an offshoot of AFM that combines a microfluidic cantilever with AFM and has enabled the research community to conduct biological, pathological, and pharmacological studies on cells at the single-cell level in a liquid environment. In this review, capacities of fluidFM are discussed to illustrate (1) the speed with which sequential measurements of adhesion using coated colloid beads can be done, (2) the ability to assess lateral binding forces of endothelial or epithelial cells in a confluent cell monolayer in an appropriate physiological environment, and (3) the ease of measurement of vertical binding forces of intercellular adhesion between heterogeneous cells. Furthermore, key applications of fluidFM are reviewed regarding to EV absorption, manipulation of a single living cell by intracellular injection, sampling of cellular fluid from a single living cell, patch clamping, and mass measurements of a single living cell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Intestinal homeostasis is closely associated with the normal intestinal luminal physiological environment. Temporary loop ileostomy changes the intestinal structure and diverts the fecal stream, thereby disturbing the intestinal environment. This study aimed to clarify the changing situation of the human intestinal mucosa barrier in the absence of a fecal stream after loop ileostomy. METHODS We obtained paired samples from the fed (fecal stream maintained) and unfed (no fecal stream) portions of the loop ileostomy and subjected these samples to RNA sequencing. We also determined transepithelial electrical resistance. The mucus layer thickness and content of MUC2, tight junction proteins, and common antimicrobial peptides in ileum mucosa were studied. RESULTS Transcriptome data revealed that genes associated with enhancing the intestinal barrier function of the unfed ileum were significantly decreased and genes associated with immune defense response were significantly increased. The transepithelial electrical resistance was lower and the mucus layer thickness was thinner in the unfed ileal mucosa than in the fed ileum. The MUC2, Occludin, and zonula occludens 1 content was lower in the unfed ileum than in the fed ileum. α-Defensin 5, α-defensin 6, and lysozyme content was higher in the unfed ileum than in the enterally fed ileum. CONCLUSION Intestinal barrier function is weakened after long-term fecal diversion, but antimicrobiota defense function is strengthened. Thus, the intestinal mucosa barrier adopts an alternative stable state during fecal diversion, which may explain the clinical paucity of cases of enterogenic infection caused by loop ileostomy.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between post-operative proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) and C2-femoral heads center (C2-FH), pelvic fixation in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients, so as to provide a reference for the preoperative decision-making and the postoperative intervention timely. Methods: It was a retrospective study that analyzed 34 cases of ASD patients who underwent posterior pedicle screw fixation in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between January 2017 and May 2017. ASD patients were divided into two groups according to fixation options: the sacroiliac fixation group and the non-sacroiliac fixation group. The spine-pelvis parameters were evaluated on full-length X ray films of spine at preoperatively, 2 weeks postoperatively and the last follow-up, and the incidence of PJK was recorded. Results: A total of 34 ASD patients (3 males and 31 females) were included in this study, with an average age of (58±6) years. The mean follow-up period was (2.9±1.0) years (2.0-4.0 years). The age, follow-up time and various spine-pelvis parameters showed no significant differences between the two groups (all P>0.05). The immediate postoperative C2-FH in the sacroiliac fixation group was significantly lower than that in the non-sacroiliac fixation group [(-69.46±30.85) mm vs (-31.62±15.31) mm, P<0.001]. The incidence of PJK was as high as 50.0% (8/16) in patients with sacroiliac fixation, but it was only 22% (4/18) in patients without sacroiliac fixation (P=0.016). At the last follow-up, the C2-FH of both groups were both higher than -20 mm (both were approximately -15 mm, P=0.976), indicating that the C2-FH was compensated in both groups. Due to the loss of the distal compensation ability, the incidence of PJK in the sacroiliac fixation group was higher than that in the non-sacroiliac fixation group. Due to the fixation of pelvis and most of lumbar spine, no significant differences were found in lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic tilt (PT) and sacral slope (SS) at the last follow-up in both groups when compared with those after the operation (all P>0.05); while the thoracic kyphosis (TK) and cervical lordosis (CL) increased significantly (both P<0.05) to compensate C2-FH at the last follow-up. Conclusion: It's demonstrated that C2-FH< -2 cm and pelvic fixation are high risk factors of PJK in ASD patients. It is suggested that both global sagittal balance and pelvic fixation should be considered in decision-making and corrective surgery, rather than only focusing on spine-pelvic parameters.

Abstract
Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have achieved considerable success in protein sensing in vitro. And aptamer is one of the most frequently used biomolecules to modify the nanoparticles for protein assay. However, the complicated process of modifying UCNPs with DNA and the susceptibility of the phosphate groups of DNA backbone to adsorb on the surface of UCNPs have limited their practical applications. To overcome these limitations, a modification-free fluorescent biosensor based on polydopamine-coated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs@PDA) is proposed. It consists of UCNPs@PDA and CEA aptamer-functionalized AuNPs (AuNPs-CEA aptamer). The CEA aptamer on AuNPs can be adsorbed onto the surface of UCNPs@PDA due to the interactions of π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding, triggering the process of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from UCNPs@PDA to AuNPs-CEA aptamer. In the presence of CEA, the AuNPs-CEA aptamer departs from UCNPs@PDA due to the stronger affinity of CEA with its aptamer. Therefore, the recovery of upconversion fluorescence can sensitively quantify the concentration of CEA. This biosensor provides a linear range from 0.1 to 100 ng/mL for CEA with a LOD of 0.031 ng/mL in an aqueous solution. In spiked human serum samples, the same linear range is acquired with a slightly higher LOD of 0.055 ng/mL, demonstrating the great potential of the biosensor in practical application.

Abstract
Time-varying directed electroencephalography (EEG) network is the potential tool for studying the dynamical causality among brain areas at a millisecond level; which conduces to understanding how our brain effectively adapts to information processing, giving inspiration to causality- and brain-inspired machine learning. Currently, its construction still mainly relies on the parametric approach such as multivariate adaptive autoregressive (MVAAR), represented by the most widely used adaptive directed transfer function (ADTF). Restricted by the model assumption, the corresponding performance largely depends on the MVAAR modeling which usually encounters difficulty in fitting complex spectral features. In this study, we proposed to construct EEG directed network with multivariate nonparametric dynamical Granger causality (mndGC) method that infers the causality of a network, instead, in a data-driven way directly and therefore avoids the trap in the model-dependent parametric approach. Comparisons between mndGC and ADTF were conducted both with simulation and real data application. Simulation study demonstrated the superiority of mndGC both in noise resistance and capturing the instantaneous directed network changes. When applying to the real motor imagery (MI) data set, distinguishable network characters between left- and right-hand MI during different MI stages were better revealed by mndGC. Our study extends the nonparametric causality exploration and provides practical suggestions for the time-varying directed EEG network analysis.

Abstract
In general, a single enantiomer can induce a foldamer into a preferred-handed helix, while another condition is required for the helical inversion. In this work, it is found that the helix induction and subsequent inversion of the poly(m-phenylene diethynylene)-based foldamer bearing aza-18-crown-6 pendants (Poly-1) can be realized by increasing the concentration of sterically hindered L-amino acid perchlorate salts. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is small, one enantiomer tends to complex with two non-adjacent aza-18-crown-6 rings via three N+ -H···O hydrogen bonds in a sandwich mode. Notably, the transition dipole moment is perpendicular to aza-18-crown-6 ring, so that the induced helical chirality in Poly-1 main chain is opposite to the chirality of enantiomers. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is large enough, each aza-18-crown-6 is occupied by one enantiomer, which causes the transition dipole moment in a parallel direction to aza-18-crown-6 ring. In this case, the increased steric hindrance can facilitate the inversion of screw sense of Poly-1 main chain, which is directed by chiral center of enantiomers. As a result, a helix inversion has been achieved successfully. This work not only provides a novel strategy for regulating the two-stage folded helical conformations by the single enantiomers, but opens a window to develop chiral recognition materials. Abstract
The construction of aggregation-induced emission-active (AIE-active) gelators with liquid crystal properties remains a challenge. Moreover, it is still unclear for the effect of AIE configuration on liquid crystal, gel and AIE behaviors in one system. Herein, two main-chain liquid crystalline copolyester gelators with a single configuration of AIEgen TPE, mesogen biphenyl and pendent amide groups have been synthesized through melt polycondensation. Both copolyesters display smectic phase, while E-P20 possesses a wider temperature range of liquid crystal and a narrower layer distance owing to the more serious nonlinear "defect" of Z-TPE than E-TPE units. In addition, E-P20 and Z-P20 can form AIE-active gels with the minimum gelation concentration (MGC) values of 10 wt% and 4 wt% in ethyl acetate mainly via hydrogen bond between the pendent amide groups, respectively. Abstract
An ileostomy is a surgery that is commonly performed to protect low pelvic anastomoses or prevent high-risk anastomotic leakages. However, various postoperative complications remain of major concern. After an ileostomy, the distal intestinal segment is left open for an extended period and is in a non-functional state. Consequently, the intestinal mucosa, smooth muscle, and microbiota undergo significant changes that are closely related to postoperative recovery and complications. A systematic description of these changes is necessary to understand the relationship among them and take more effective measures for postoperative intervention.

Abstract
With the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba3CoSb2O9, a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba2.87Sr0.13CoSb2O9with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba2+ion sites. The results show that Ba2.87Sr0.13CoSb2O9exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120 degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24μB/Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for bothH∥ab-plane andH∥c-axis. ForH∥ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up-up-down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba3CoSb2O9, which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Abstract
Long-term repeated regular blood donation may result in the loss and deficiency of iron. Epidemiological studies have indicated that blood donation frequency, demographical characteristics, and genetic factors are associated with iron deficiency. Our review summarizes the progress in research of etiology of iron deficiency in blood donors and intervention measures to provide evidence for the health management of non-remunerated blood donors in China.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of MDM2 RNA in situ hybridization (RNA-ISH) in diagnosing atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDL) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDL). Methods: A total of 26 ALT/WDL/DDLs diagnosed from March 2017 to May 2019 in West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China and 18 control cases were included. MDM2 RNA-ISH was performed on all samples and compared with the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) regarding their performance in detecting MDM2. Results: All samples were detected successfully using the three methods. Among 26 ALT/WDL/DDLs, all cases showed MDM2 amplification and positivity for MDM2 RNA-ISH (26/26, 100%). Twenty-four (24/26, 92.3%) of the 26 tested cases were positive for MDM2 IHC while two of them were negative. Eighteen control cases were all negative for MDM2 FISH and RNA-ISH, and 15 (15/18) cases were negative for MDM2 IHC. The sensitivity and specificity of RNA-ISH were both 100%, and those of MDM2 IHC were 92.3% and 83.3%, respectively. Diffuse staining was identified in all MDM2 RNA-ISH positive ALT/WDL/DDLs, but identified in only 8/24 (33.3%) of the MDM2 IHC positive cases. Among the 11 ALT/WDL/DDL samples evaluated on tissue microarray, the positive rate of MDM2 RNA-ISH was 100% with diffuse staining in all cases. The positive rate of MDM2 IHC was 9/11 while only 1 of the 9 cases showed diffuse staining. The result of MDM2 RNA-ISH was identical to that of MDM2 FISH and was overall consistent with that of MDM2 IHC (Kappa=0.763, P<0.001). Conclusions: In ALT/WDL/DDLs, results of MDM2 RNA-ISH are highly consistent with those of FISH. MDM2 RNA-ISH is more sensitive and more specific and has more diffuse positive signals than the IHC. The findings indicate that MDM2 RNA-ISH is highly valuable for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of ALT/WDL/DDLs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Percutaneous thermal ablation followed by vertebral augmentation is an emerging minimally invasive therapeutic alternative for the management of spinal metastases. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the effectiveness and safety of microwave ablation combined with vertebral augmentation for the treatment of painful vertebral metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Overall, 91 patients with 140 metastatic vertebrae who experienced refractory moderate-to-severe pain were treated with CT-guided microwave ablation and vertebral augmentation. Procedural effectiveness was determined using the visual analog scale, daily morphine consumption, and the Oswestry Disability Index preprocedurally and during follow-up. Local tumor control was assessed at follow-up imaging. RESULTS The procedure was technically successful in all patients. The median visual analog scale score and mean morphine dose were 6 (range, 4-10) and 77.8 (SD, 31.5) mg (range, 15-143 mg), preprocedurally; 5 (range 3-8) and 34.5 (SD, 23.8) mg (range, 0-88 mg) at 3 days; 4 (range, 2-7) and 28.7 (SD, 16.4) mg (range, 0-73 mg) at 1 week; 3 (range, 1-6) and 24.6 (SD, 13.2) mg (range, 0-70 mg) at 1 month; 3 (range, 1-6) and 21.70 (SD, 10.0) mg (range, 0-42 mg) at 3 months; and 3 (range, 1-8) and 21.0 (SD, 9.9) mg (range, 0-46 mg) at 6 months postprocedurally (all P < .05). A decrease in the Oswestry Disability Index score was also observed (P < .01). Local control was achieved in 94.8% of the treated metastatic vertebrae during the 6-month follow-up period. Asymptomatic cement leakage occurred in 42 (30%) treated vertebrae. A grade 3 neural injury was observed in 1 patient (1.1%). The patient's neurologic function returned to normal following treatment with mannitol, glucocorticoids, and radiation therapy. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that percutaneous CT-guided microwave ablation combined with vertebral augmentation is a safe and effective minimally invasive intervention for the treatment of painful spinal metastases.
