Abstract
BACKGROUND Midgut neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare malignancies with indolent clinical courses. In general, they are well-differentiated with most tumor cells in the G0 phase of the cell cycle, consistent with the poor response rate of NETs to chemotherapy in vivo. We hypothesize that insults, such as surgery, can drive NET cells from G0 into S phase and that biomarker analysis of individual patient tumors harvested and grown in the lab will provide useful practical guide for future intra and post-operative adjuvant therapy. METHODS 97 well-differentiated midgut NET patients underwent cytoreductive surgery at our institution between May/2012 and October/2012. 148 surgical specimens were collected and submitted to a single commercial lab for processing. Primary tumors, lymph nodes and liver metastases were harvested and cultured. Their ribonucleic acids (RNA) were then extracted to analyze the expressivity, a total of 88 different biomarkers. Based on our patients' specific tumor biomarker expressivity and known correlations between 36 anti-neoplastic agents with their linked biomarkers, recommendations were reported as clinically beneficial or non-beneficial. RESULTS A total of 148 specimens from 97 patients were tested. In four of the 97 patients, no clinically beneficial chemotherapy agent could be identified. Among the remaining 93 patients, the top three agents that are most likely to be clinically beneficial are: fluorouracil, cisplatin and carboplatin. These were reported to be clinically beneficial in 135/148 (91.2%), 103/148 (69.6%), and 103/148 (69.6%) patients respectively. CONCLUSIONS Midgut NETs are slow growing tumors which are chemotherapeutically inert owing to the fact that most of the tumor cells are in G0 cell cycle. Surgical insult drives NET cells into active synthetic phase where they begin to express biomarkers specific to their tumor cells. Analysis of these biomarkers guides further potential beneficial therapy based on the current known associations among biomarkers and chemotherapy agents. These results must then be compared and confirmed against a direct in-vitro chemo sensitivity assessment conducted simultaneously on the same patients.

Abstract
Some species of Laccaria have been known to contain relatively high levels of arsenic in Europe and are used as edible mushrooms in the southwest China. One population of Laccaria proxima and one population of L. vinaceoavellanea as well as topsoil (0-10 cm) they grew on were collected from natural habitats of Yunnan (SW China), while other samples such as Laccaria mushroom samples without soil were purchased from four different local markets in Yunnan. Concentrations of arsenic were determined in fruit bodies of the mushrooms and in the soils by using atomic fluorescence spectrometry to assess potential health risks of these species. The mean arsenic concentrations in caps were 135, 14.1-143, 5.5 and 130-163 mg kg(-1) dry weight (dw) for Laccaria amethystina, Laccaria laccata, L. proxima and L. vinaceoavellanea, respectively. The mean value for bioconcentration factor of arsenic in caps of L. vinaceoavellanea was 29.1 for soil with arsenic content at 5.6 mg kg(-1) dw, which indicate that L. vinaceoavellanea is an accumulator for arsenic. Caps of L. amethystina, L. laccata and L. vinaceoavellanea consumed at a volume of 300 g fresh weight for a single meal in a week can yield an exposure amount of arsenic at 4.1, 0.42-4.3 and 3.9-4.9 mg, respectively. These values are higher than the limit dose for the intake of inorganic arsenic recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.

Abstract
Backgrounds Gentiana rhodantha, a rich source of iridoids and polyphenols, is a traditional ethnomedicine widely used in China. Metabolic fingerprinting based on a LC-UV-MS/MS method was applied to explore the chemical markers for discrimination of G. rhodantha from different geographical origins. Results Targeted compounds were separated on a Shim-pack XR-ODS III (150 × 2.0 mm, 2.2 μm), with a mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid in water, under gradient elution. In quantitative analysis, all of the calibration curves showed good linear regression (R2 < less than 0.9991) within the tested ranges, and accuracy ranged from 97.8% to 104.2% and the %RSD of precision (less than 3%) were all within the required limits. The most abundant mangiferin (82.21 mg/g) found in sample from Zunyi, Guizhou province. Furthermore, 64 samples according to their geographical origins, could be classified by partial least-squares discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) and nine compounds including two new compounds identified by mass spectrometry could be regarded as characteristic compounds for discriminating samples from different geographical origins. Conclusions The developed method appears to be a useful tool for analysis of G. rhodantha, which could provide potential indicators for differentiation of different geographical origins. Abstract
Cherry (Cerasus avium (Linn.) Moench) is the third most economically important fruit in Yantai, Shandong Province, China. In August 2012, brown spots or necrosis on cherry seedling leaves, with an incidence of 8.2 to 34.3%, were observed in some fields of cherry seedlings in Yantai. Our survey indicated that the economic losses could reach up to 15.3% if disease conditions, such as a cool rainy summer season, were favorable. Conspicuous watery lesions on the stems turned to brown streaks; the leaves all wilted; and finally the plants collapsed. Diseased stem and leaf samples were surface-disinfected in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, rinsed three times in sterile water, which was absorbed with filter paper, and then transferred to 10% V8 juice agar medium containing 50 μg/ml ampicillin and 5 μg/ml carbendazim (1). The plates were incubated at 22°C in the dark for 5 days. The colonies consisted of white, loose, fluffy aerial mycelia. Eight isolates were obtained, and all were identified as Phytophthora nicotianae based on morphological characteristics and the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA. The sporangia were ovoid/spherical, obturbinate with rounded bases and prominent papillae that were 37.5 to 62.5 × 30 to 50 μm (average 46.4 × 37.8 μm, n = 100) in size, with an average length-to-breadth ratio of 1.2. Chlamydospores were terminal, intercalary, and measured 19 to 42 μm (average 30.4 μm), which is typical of P. nicotianae (2). The genomic DNA of the eight isolates was extracted from mycelia. The ITS region of all eight isolates was amplified using primers ITS1 and ITS4, producing specific products that were directly sequenced. The sequence of a representative isolate P1401 (895 bp) was submitted to GenBank (Accession No. KJ754387). It was 100% similar to P. nicotianae strains NV-20T and TARI 22073 (KC768775 and GU111667). To confirm the pathogenicity, at least 10 cherry leaves and new stems were inoculated with mycelial plugs (5 × 5 mm) from each isolate. Necrosis of leaves and stems was observed 4 and 7 days after inoculation, respectively. No symptoms were observed on the control leaves and stems that were inoculated with blank agar plugs. P. nicotianae was re-isolated from the infected leaves, and the ITS sequence was analyzed to confirm its identity. Phytophthora species, such as P. cambivora, P. megasperma, and P. drechsleri, had been previously isolated from cherry (3), but to the best of our knowledge this is the first report of stem rot and leaf necrosis disease caused by P. nicotianae on cherry. Since the economic loss caused by this disease could reach 15% if an outbreak occurred in a rainy summer, control measures should be implemented. References: (1) Y. Balci et al. Mycol. Abstract
For the first time, highly elevated levels of mercury (Hg) have been documented for several species of the edible Fungi genus Boletus growing in latosols, lateritic red earths, and red and yellow earths from the Yunnan province of China. Analysis of Hg concentrations in the genus suggests that geogenic Hg is the dominant source of Hg in the fungi, whereas anthropogenic sources accumulate largely in the organic layer of the forest soil horizon. Among the 21 species studied from 32 locations across Yunnan and 2 places in Sichuan Province, the Hg was found at elevated level in all samples from Yunnan but not in the samples from Sichuan, which is located outside the mercuriferous belt. Particularly abundant in Hg were the caps of fruiting bodies of Boletus aereus (up to 13 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus bicolor (up to 5.5 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus edulis (up to 22 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus luridus (up to 11 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus magnificus (up to 13 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus obscureumbrinus (up to 9.4 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus purpureus (up to 16 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus sinicus (up to 6.8 mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus speciosus (up to 4.9mg kg-1 dry matter), Boletus tomentipes (up to 13 mg kg-1 dry matter), and Boletus umbriniporus (up to 4.9 mg kg-1 dry matter). Soil samples of the 0-10 cm topsoil layer from the widely distributed locations had mercury levels ranging between 0.034 to 3.4 mg kg-1 dry matter. In Yunnan, both the soil parent rock and fruiting bodies of Boletus spp. were enriched in Hg, whereas the same species from Sichuan, located outside the mercuriferous belt, had low Hg concentrations, suggesting that the Hg in the Yunnan samples is mainly from geogenic sources rather than anthropogenic sources. However, the contribution of anthropogenically-derived Hg sequestered within soils of Yunnan has not been quantified, so more future research is required. Our results suggest that high rates of consumption of Boletus spp. from Yunnan can deliver relatively high doses of Hg to consumers, but that rates can differ widely because of large variability in mercury concentrations between species and locations.

Abstract
The difference of Dendrobium varieties were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The infrared spectra of 206 stems from 30 Dendrobium varieties were obtained, and showed that polysaccharides, especially fiber, were the main components in Dendrobium plants. FTIR combined with Wilks' Lambda stepwise discriminative analysis was used to identify Dendrobium varieties. The effects of spectral range and number of training samples on the discrimination results were also analysed. Two hundred eighty seven variables in the spectral range of 1 800-1 250 cm(-1) were studied, and showed that the return discrimination is 100% correct when the training samples number of each species was 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, respectively, whereas for the remaining samples the correct rates of identification were equal to 79.4%, 91.3%, 93.0%, 98.2%, and 100%, respectively. The same discriminative analyses on five different training samples in the spectral range of 1 800-1 500, 1 500-1 250, 1 250-600, 1 250-950 and 950-650 cm(-1) were compared, which showed that the variables in the range of 1 800-1 250, 1 800-1 500 and 950-600 cm(-1) were more suitable for variety identification, and one can obtain the satisfactory result for discriminative analysis when the training sample is more than 3. Our results indicate that FTIR combined with stepwise discriminative analysis is an effective way to distinguish different Dendrobium varieties.

Abstract
Based on near infrared spectroscopy, seventy samples of wild medicinal plants of paris polyphylla from Guizhou, Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces were collected to identify their geographical origins. Multiplication signal correction (MSC), standard normal variate (SNV), first derivative (FD), second derivative (SD), savitzky-Golay filter (SG), and Norris derivative filter (ND) were conducted to optimize the original spectra of fifty samples of training set. The results showed that the method MSC combined with SD and ND presented the best results of spectra pretreatment. According to spectrum standard deviation, spectrum range (7 450-4 050 cm(-1)) was chosen and principal component analysis-mahalanobis distance (PCA-MD) method was used to build the model. Its first three principal components, i. e. cumulative contribution, determination coefficient (R2), root-mean-square error of calibration (RMSEC) and root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) were 89.44%, 97.58%, 0.179 6 and 0.266 4, respectively, and the prediction accuracy is 90%. Furthermore, according to variable importance plot (VIP), spectrum range (7 135.33-4 007.35 cm(-1)) was chosen and partial least square discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to establish the model. Its first three principal components cumulative contribution, R2, RMSEC and RMSEP were 89.28%, 95.88%, 0.234 8 and 0.348 2, respectively, and the prediction accuracy is 100%. Comparing the two methods, we found that spectrum range chosen by VIP and model built by PLS-DA could provide greater accuracy in identifying paris polyphylla from different origin areas. The method supplied foundation for authenticity and quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract
Many species from genus Gentiana (Gentianaceae) have a long history of applications as folk medicines in the world. A simple rapid UPLC-UV-MS/MS method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of six index constituents (gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, loganic acid, sweroside, mangiferin and ferulic acid) from the four ethnomedicines (G. rigescens Franch. ex Hemsl., G. rhodantha Franch. ex Hemsl., G. scabra Bunge and G. farreri Balf. f.). The UPLC analysis was performed on Shim-Pack XR-ODS III (150 × 2.0 mm, 2.2 µm). The mobile phase was consisted of acetonitrile-0.1% formic acid water using gradient elution. The wavelength 242 nm was chose for the four iridoids as well as mangiferin and 320 nm was set for ferulic acid. Mass spectrometry was applied for identification and quantification for analytes with low concentration. All the regression equations revealed a good linear relationship (R(2) > 0.9993). Accuracy and precision were all within the required limits. The chromatogram fingerprints analysis combined with principal component analysis showed the similarity values of the four species were <0.788 while the similarity values of G. scabra Bunge and G. rigescens Franch. ex Hemsl. were >0.993, which provided reasonable foundation for utilization and clinical application of the four ethnomedicines. This developed method appears to be a useful tool for quality control of the four ethnomedicines.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of inhibitors of the NF-kΒ alpha mutant gene (IkBaM) delivery to mensenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on rat chronic pancreatitis (CP). A total of 120 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 6 groups of 20: Group A was injected with sterile saline solution, Group B was injected with allogenic MSCs, Group C1 was injected with allogenic IkBαM-MSCs cultured in vitro 4 h before CP modeling, Group C2 was injected with allogenic IkBαM-MSCs cultured in vitro during CP modeling, Group C3 was cultured with allogenic IkBαM-MSCs cultured in vitro 4 h after CP modeling, and Group D was injected with rAAV2-MSCs. Cytokine levels of ICAM-1, CTGF, IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, IL-10, FN, MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, and MMP-9 were examined. The results indicated that allogenic IκBαM-MSCs could reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine levels and increase anti-inflammatory cytokine levels in CP. The allogenic IkBαM-MSCs reduced the activation and promoted the apoptosis of pancreatic stellate cells in the rat model of CP. IkBαM-MSCs influenced the proliferation and apoptosis of pancreatic stellate cells by regulating the activation of the PPAR, MAPK, mTOR, TGF-β, NOD-like receptor, Notch, WNT, TGF-β1-SMAD-2/3, and P53 signal transduction pathways.

Abstract
Radiation-induced sterile insect technique is a biologically based, environment-friendly method for the suppression or eradication of a number of insect pests. Although the basic mechanisms underlying the technology have been well studied, little is known about the cell responses in organisms. Characterization of the metabolic shift associated with radiation exposure in sterile insects would be helpful for understanding the detailed mechanism underlying this technique and promote its practical application. In this article, a metabolomic study was performed to characterize the global metabolic changes induced by radiation using untreated and 40 Gy (60)Coγ-irradiated testes of Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus Hope. Differential metabolites were detected and tentatively identified. Many key metabolites in glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, as well as most fatty and amino acids, were elevated in irradiated male M. alternatus, presumably resulting from depression of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, each of which are important pathways for energy generation Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) in insect spermatozoa. The findings in this article will contribute to our knowledge of the characteristic metabolic changes associated with irradiation sterility and understand the molecular mechanisms underlying radiation-induced sterile insect technique.

Abstract
Near infrared diffuse reflection spectra of 15 species' 171 samples of Dendrobium combined with chemometrics statistical analysis were used to build prediction model, in order to discriminate different species of Dendrobium quickly and nondestructively. Hotelling T2 was applied to stability analysis of spectrum of 5 random drawing samples, and the results showed that the samples spectrum possessed good stability. Orthogonal test L24 (2 x 4 x 3 x 8) was designed to optimize optical path type, spectral band, derivative and smooth. The result of orthogonal test was analyzed by principal component analysis, which revealed that when 6500-4000 cm(-1) spectral band was applied, and with multiplicative scatter correction, second derivative, Norris smooth, and the number of principal components 7, the spectrum distinguishing accuracy was 100%. With the optimized condition of orthogonal test as the input value of partial least squares discriminant analysis and random drawing 123 samples as calibration set to establish the prediction model, and the rest 48 samples as prediction set were use to assess the property of the prediction model, the results indicated that the accumulating contribution rate of the first 3 principal components of the model was 99.36%, the identification of the standard deviation was +/- 0.1, and the correct recognition rate of the model was 97.92%. The results were satisfied. The method provided a new way for the rapid identification of different species of Dendrobium, and also supplied a reference for the authentication of medicinal plants.

Abstract
An analytical model for solute advection and dispersion in a two-layered liner consisting of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and a soil liner (SL) considering the effect of biodegradation was proposed. The analytical solution was derived by Laplace transformation and was validated over a range of parameters using the finite-layer method based software Pollute v7.0. Results show that if the half-life of the solute in GCL is larger than 1 year, the degradation in GCL can be neglected for solute transport in GCL/SL. When the half-life of GCL is less than 1 year, neglecting the effect of degradation in GCL on solute migration will result in a large difference of relative base concentration of GCL/SL (e.g., 32% for the case with half-life of 0.01 year). The 100-year solute base concentration can be reduced by a factor of 2.2 when the hydraulic conductivity of the SL was reduced by an order of magnitude. The 100-year base concentration was reduced by a factor of 155 when the half life of the contaminant in the SL was reduced by an order of magnitude. The effect of degradation is more important in approving the groundwater protection level than the hydraulic conductivity. The analytical solution can be used for experimental data fitting, verification of complicated numerical models and preliminary design of landfill liner systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Lobular capillary hemangioma is an uncommon lesion, and its MR imaging appearance has not been fully characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine the MR imaging features of nasal lobular capillary hemangioma and contrast its imaging characteristics to inverting papilloma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The MR imaging signals of 32 patients with histopathologically proven nasal lobular capillary hemangiomas and 53 patients with nasal inverted papillomas were retrospectively studied. The findings of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging in 24 lobular capillary hemangiomas and in 53 inverted papillomas were also analyzed. The Monte Carlo exact test was used for comparison of the time-intensity curve patterns of lobular capillary hemangioma and inverted papilloma. RESULTS All lobular capillary hemangiomas appeared to be homogeneously isointense to gray matter on T1-weighted images. On T2-weighted images, all lesions showed heterogeneous hyperintensity, and a thin peripheral isointense or hypointense ring was seen in 28 patients. All lesions showed marked enhancement on enhanced images, with the exception of enhancement of the T2 isointense or hypointense ring. Forty-three (81.1%) inverted papillomas had moderate heterogeneous T2 signal intensity, and a characteristic "cerebriform" appearance was detected in 45 (84.91%) of 53 inverted papillomas. The time-intensity curves showed a washout pattern in 18 and a plateau pattern in 6 patients, whereas inverted papillomas showed a washout pattern in 12, a plateau pattern in 35, and a persistent pattern in 6 patients. There was a statistically significant difference as to time-intensity curve pattern between the 2 groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, marked enhancement of tumor with a nonenhancing thin peripheral ring, and a washout time-intensity curve pattern are characteristic MR imaging features of nasal lobular capillary hemangiomas.

Abstract
AIM Under special conditions, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can differentiate into osteoblasts and chondroblasts. However, MSCs are few in bone marrow. How to harvest, purify and rapidly proliferate in vitro is a foundation of application in tissue engineering technique. To optimize, collect, purify, assess rabbit BMSCs and to observe the biological character of BMSCs. METHODS Two female New Zealand rabbits aged 2 months were used for MSC collection and primary culture. Bone marrow solution was purified by density gradient centrifugation and adherence screening method. Culture solution was obtained. BMSCs were incubated in phosphate buffered solution (PBS), supplemented with 2.5 g/L trypsin (3.0 mL), and placed in an incubator at 37 °C for two or three minutes. Cell morphology was observed using an inverted microscope. The digestion was stopped when cytoplasm recovery, long and thin cells with large intercellular space, and few round cells appeared. Subsequently, BMSCs were incubated in serum-free L-DMEM, and placed in a plastic culture flask at 1.0×108/L. MSC morphology, ultrastructure and surface marker; proliferation of the first, third, fifth, eighth and tenth passages of BMSCs; cell growth curve was drawn. BMSCs was pure following density gradient centrifugation and adherence screening method. The third and fifth passage of cells had typical whirlpool-shape. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Transmission electron microscope demonstrated that round or oval MSCs possessed large nuclei, big nucleus proportion, a few cellular organ. These were low-differentiated cells. Growth curve of cultured MSCs was "S" shape. The first, third and fifth passage cells had strong reproductive capability. The eighth and tenth passage of cells had significantly reduced proliferation. Cells isolated were positive for CD44 and CD90, but negative for CD34. These were low-differentiated cells under the electron microscope. Isolated cells are MSCs, with the property of stem cells. The third and fifth passage cells are pure, with strong reproductive capability.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Wolfiporia cocos (Schwein.) Ryvarden et Gilb. has a long history as a Chinese traditional medicine with uses of inducing diuresis, excreting dampness, invigorating the spleen, and tranquilizing the mind. Recently, Wolfiporia cocos has received increasing interest, and phytochemical and pharmacological studies have validated the traditional uses of this species. AIMS OF THE REVIEW To provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the mycology, cultivation, traditional uses, chemical constituents and pharmacological activities aspects of Wolfiporia cocos in order to highlight its ethnopharmacological use and to explore its therapeutic potentials and to provide a basis for future research. MATERIALS AND METHODS The accessible literature, from 1980 to 2012, on Wolfiporia cocos written in English, Chinese, French, Korean, Spanish and Turkish were selected and analyzed. RESULTS The phytochemical and modern pharmacological studies demonstrated that Wolfiporia cocos possess a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, anti-rejection, nematicidal, anti-hyperglycemic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-hypertonic stress activities, which could be explained by the presence of various triterpenes and polysaccharides. CONCLUSIONS Modern phytochemical and pharmacological investigations showed that major active components separated from Wolfiporia cocos had anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, anti-rejection activities, and so on. Further investigations are needed to explore the relationship of the molecular mass, chain stiffness, and water solubility of polysaccharide from Wolfiporia cocos with the antitumor activities.

Abstract
Antibiotic treatment for microbial infections is under scrutiny due to increasing resistance to conventional antibiotics, warranting discovery of new classes of antibiotic agents. Antimicrobial peptides are part of the innate defense system found in nearly all organisms and possess bactericidal mechanisms that make it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance. Porcine lactoferricin (LFP-20) is an antimicrobial peptide located in the N terminus of lactoferrin (LF). To develop novel cell-selective antimicrobial peptides with improved antimicrobial specificity compared with LFP-20, analogs LF2A LF-2, LF-4, and LF-6 were substituted with Ala, Ser, or Trp residues at different positions in the molecule. Analogs displayed a 2- to 16-fold higher antimicrobial activity than LFP-20, but were hemolytic at 64 μg/mL. Additionally, LFP-20, LF2A, LF-2, and LF-4 exhibited lower cytotoxicity against human peripheral blood mononuclear cells than LF-6 at concentrations of 25 to 100 μg/mL. To better understand the antibacterial mechanisms of LFP-20 and its analogs we examined their effect on the cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli. The LFP-20 was not effective in depolarizing cytoplasmic membranes, whereas the other 3 analogs gradually dissipated the membrane potential of E. coli. Membrane potential increased with minimal inhibitory concentrations changes, demonstrating a correlation between bactericidal activity and membrane depolarization. Analogs were more efficient than LFP-20 in displacing lipopolysaccharide-bound dansyl-polymyxin B, which also rapidly increased 1-N-phenyl-naphthylamine uptake and release of cytoplasmic β-galactosidase by increasing the permeability of the outer and inner membranes of E. coli. The 3 analogs caused an increased potential for calcein leakage from negatively charged lipid vesicles at high concentrations. Collectively, these results suggest that the first targets of LF-2, LF-4, and LF-6 in E. coli are cytoplasmic membranes. The 3 analogs exhibited lethal effects based on their abilities to disrupt membranes and permit transit of large intracellular components, such as calcein.

Abstract
SUMMARY SFT is a rare lesion of the sinonasal cavity. We retrospectively reviewed 5 patients with histopathologically proved sinonasal SFTs to determine their CT and MR imaging features. All patients underwent paranasal sinus CT and MR imaging. Four SFTs occurred in the nasal cavity, and 1, in the maxillary sinus. All SFTs had well-defined margins, and the mean maximum diameter was 55 mm. On nonenhanced CT, 5 SFTs appeared homogeneously isoattenuating to gray matter. The most common manifestations of bony involvement were bony remodeling and thinning. On MR imaging, 5 SFTs were isointense to gray matter on T1-weighted images, and the lesions were isointense in 3 and hypointense in 2 patients on T2-weighted images. The lesions showed heterogeneously marked enhancement on postenhanced MR images. Four patients underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging, and the TICs showed a washout pattern. A familiarity with the imaging findings of sinonasal SFT may help to diagnose this entity.

Abstract
In this study, Panax notoginseng samples were extracted by chloroform, ethanol and water, or by those extracted solution with 5% vanillin sulfuric acid to establish two kinds of UV fingerprint of P. notoginseng which were compared by applying the common and variation peak ratio dual index sequence analysis method and SIMCA software qualitative analysis. The results indicated that the optimization extraction time of P. notoginseng samples was 20 min with chloroform, ethanol and water extraction, but the fingerprint differed significantly after add vanillin sulfuric acid. The common peak ratios of UV fingerprint of P. notoginseng were scattered. The minimum was 25% (Y5-Y8), while the maximum was 84.38% (Y11-Y13, Y20-Y21). The maximum variation peak ratio was 177.78% (Y8-Y5), meanwhile, the variation peak ratios of several samples were more than 100%. However, the common peak ratios of UV fingerprint of P. notoginseng with vanillin sulfuric acid were concentrated (distributed in the range of 50%-70%): the minimum was 42.86%(Y1-Y19), whereas the maximum was 79.55% (Y22-Y23); the range of the variation peak ratios was also smaller with the ranges of 20%-50% in general. The result of the dual index sequence analysis was agreement with the fingerprint implied. The similarity of the UV fingerprint of the extracts of P. notoginseng after adding vanillin sulfuric acid was greater than before. Both the ages and origin was related with the difference of UV fingerprint. The similarity of the two samples with same age was more significant than those with different ages. The similarity and difference between samples was no correlation with the distance of geographic space, the near origin samples maybe have a significant similarity or difference. This method appears as good alternative for evaluate quality of the P. notoginseng and can distinguish at least two samples quantitatively, duo to it reaches the limitation of the multiple methods which only could be used to indistinctly distinguish herbs.

Abstract
SUMMARY Periorbital lipogranuloma is a rare complication after ESS and presently lacks specific imaging reports. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT and MR imaging features of periorbital lipogranuloma. We retrospectively reviewed 9 patients with histology-confirmed periorbital lipogranuloma. All 9 patients underwent CT and MR imaging. Five lipogranulomas were located in the right eyelid and 4 in the left eyelid, which extended into the extraconal space to some degree. The lesions displayed an irregular shape and had an ill-defined margin. Multiple, specked, or nodular foci containing fat were scattered within these lesions. The lesions demonstrated moderate heterogeneous contrast enhancement on contrast-enhanced MR imaging. The TICs showed a persistent pattern (type I) in 6 patients undergoing DCE MR imaging. Thus, an ill-defined, irregular-shaped periorbital mass with multiple foci containing fat, combined with an ESS history, can help to accurately diagnose this entity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the CT and MR imaging features of ossifying fibroma with aneurysmal bone cyst of the paranasal sinus. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 15 patients with histopathology-proven ossifying fibromas with aneurysmal bone cysts in the paranasal sinus. All 15 patients underwent CT and MR imaging. The following imaging features were reviewed: location, shape, margin, CT findings, and MR imaging appearances and time-intensity curve of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging. RESULTS Ossifying fibromas occurred in the maxillary sinus in one patient, sphenoid sinus in 2, frontal sinus in 3, frontoethmoid sinuses in 3, and ethmoid sinus in 6 patients. Ossifying fibromas showed an elliptic-shape and aneurysmal bone cysts revealed a multicystic appearance, with well-demarcated margins. On unenhanced CT, ossifying fibromas appeared isodense to gray matter with scattered calcifications in nine, ground-glass appearance in 6 patients and aneurysmal bone cysts showed mixed density. Ossifying fibromas appeared isointense to gray matter in 12 and slightly hypointense in three patients on T1-weighted images, and isointense in 4 and hypointense in eleven patients on T2-weighted images, with moderate or marked enhancement after administration of contrast material. The time-intensity curves of eight ossifying fibromas exhibited a rapidly enhancing and rapid washout pattern. The intracystic components of aneurysmal bone cysts showed heterogeneous signal intensity on MR images, with fluid-fluid levels identified clearly by T2-weighted images, without enhancement. The periphery and septa of aneurysmal bone cysts appeared isointense on MR images, with marked enhancement. CONCLUSIONS Fluid-fluid levels within an elliptic-shape mass with scattered calcifications or ground-glass appearance is highly suggestive of this complicated entity in the paranasal sinus.

Abstract
We demonstrated a 1.91 μm pumped, injection-seeded Q-switched Ho:YAG laser operating at room temperature. By inserting two Fabry-Perot etalons into the laser cavity, single-frequency Tm, Ho:YAG seed lasing was achieved at a wavelength of 2090.9 nm, with a typical output power of 60 mW. Single-frequency, nearly transform-limited Q-switched operation of the Ho:YAG laser was achieved by injection seeding. The output energy of the single-frequency Q-switched pulse is 7.6 mJ, with a pulse width of 132 ns and a repetition rate of 100 Hz. We measured the pulse spectrum, half-width of which was 3.5 MHz, by a heterodyne technique.

Abstract
Cancer stem cells (CSC) play critical roles in cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic refractoriness. Although many studies have focused on the genes and pathways involved in stemness, characterization of the factors in the tumor microenvironment that regulate CSCs is lacking. In this study, we investigated the effects of stromal fibroblasts on breast cancer stem cells. We found that compared with normal fibroblasts, primary cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) and fibroblasts activated by cocultured breast cancer cells produce higher levels of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2), which stimulates the stem cell-specific, sphere-forming phenotype in breast cancer cells and CSC self-renewal. Increased CCL2 expression in activated fibroblasts required STAT3 activation by diverse breast cancer-secreted cytokines, and in turn, induced NOTCH1 expression and the CSC features in breast cancer cells, constituting a cancer-stroma-cancer signaling circuit. In a xenograft model of paired fibroblasts and breast cancer tumor cells, loss of CCL2 significantly inhibited tumorigenesis and NOTCH1 expression. In addition, upregulation of both NOTCH1 and CCL2 was associated with poor differentiation in primary breast cancers, further supporting the observation that NOTCH1 is regulated by CCL2. Our findings therefore suggest that CCL2 represents a potential therapeutic target that can block the cancer-host communication that prompts CSC-mediated disease progression.

Abstract
Apple ring rot and Botryosphaeria canker are severe diseases affecting apple production in China, but there is confusion regarding which pathogens cause these diseases and their similarity to other diseases, such as white rot of apple, and ring rot and Botryosphaeria canker of pear. In this study, the pathogen of apple ring rot in China was compared with the pathogen of apple ring rot in Japan and Korea, the pathogen of Botryosphaeria canker of apple and pear in China, the pathogen of pear ring rot in China, and the pathogen of white rot of apple in the United States. Comparisons were based on morphology, pathogenicity on branches and fruit, and sequences of rDNA in the internal transcribed spacer region and of the β-tubulin and actin genes. Results showed that the causal agent of apple ring rot and Botryosphaeria canker of apple in China was Botryosphaeria dothidea, which has also been reported to be the pathogen of apple ring rot in Korea and Japan. Pathogenicity tests showed that B. dothidea infection on apple and pear branches may induce wart or canker symptoms depending on the conditions. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the same pathogen causes the wart symptom of apple ring rot and the Botryosphaeria canker symptom on apple branches in China. The results also suggest that apple ring rot and white rot are the same disease and are caused by B. dothidea. Finally, B. dothidea isolates from pear and other fruit or forest trees may serve as inoculum for apple ring rot.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Haemophilic pseudotumour (HP) is an extremely rare lesion. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT and MRI features of maxillary bone HPs and introduce the key points to differentiate HP from the mimicking entities in the region. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed three paediatric patients with histology-proven HPs arising from the maxillary bone. All three patients underwent CT and/or MRI. Combined with six previously reported cases in the literature, the imaging features were comprehensively analysed. RESULTS All HPs showed a well-demarcated, multilobulated expansile osteolytic lesion in the maxillary bone. On non-enhanced CT, HPs appeared of mixed density relative to grey matter. The lesions appeared to have markedly heterogeneous signal intensity on both T(1) and T(2) weighted images, with septa-like enhancement following the administration of contrast material, which corresponded to blood products in various stages of evolution. The lesions caused cortical thinning and even focal disappearance and multiple bone septa were identified within the involved maxillary bone. Some HPs were associated with radiated periosteal proliferation, which can easily be misdiagnosed as a malignant bone tumour. CONCLUSION A high index of suspicion for HP and a familiarity with imaging findings may help to accurately diagnose this rare entity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE SAP is a rare lesion of the sinonasal cavity, which may be misdiagnosed as a benign or malignant neoplasm. The purpose of our study was to comprehensively evaluate the MR imaging features of SAP. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with SAP confirmed pathologically were retrospectively reviewed. Of the 40 patients undergoing MR imaging, 39 had postcontrast T1WI; 30, DCE MR imaging; and 17, DWI. The image features assessed included the location, shape, margin, size, signal intensity, and enhancement pattern on DCE MR imaging and ADC maps. RESULTS All 40 SAPs originated from the maxillary sinus, but the lesions frequently extended into the ipsilateral nasal cavity (38/40), toward the choana (19/40), and into the nasopharynx (8/40). The lesions demonstrated hypointensity on T1WI and heterogenous hyperintensity on T2WI. All 40 lesions showed a peripheral hypointense rim on T2WI. Postcontrast MR imaging revealed marked heterogeneous nodular and patchy enhancement. Progressive enhancement was found on DCE MR imaging in 30 cases. The TIC showed a steady enhancement pattern in 3 cases, a rapidly enhancing and slow washout pattern in 6 cases, and a rapidly enhancing and rapid washout pattern in 21 cases. On DWI, the mean ADC value was (1.40 ± 0.20) × 10(-3) mm(2)/s. CONCLUSIONS Distinctive features of SAP on conventional MR imaging include internal heterogeneous hyperintensity and a peripheral hypointense rim on T2WI, as well as strong nodular and patchy enhancement on postcontrast MR images. The progressive enhancement on DCE MR imaging can also suggest the diagnosis.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive, drug-resistant disease; its first-line chemotherapeutic, gemcitabine, is only marginally effective. Intracellular depletion of glutathione, a major free-radical scavenger, has been associated with growth arrest and reduced drug resistance (chemosensitization) of cancer cells. In search of a new therapeutic approach for pancreatic cancer, we sought to determine whether specific inhibition of the plasma membrane x(c) (-) cystine transporter could lead to reduced uptake of cysteine, a key precursor of glutathione, and subsequent glutathione depletion. Sulfasalazine (approximately 0.2 mmol/L), an anti-inflammatory drug with potent x(c) (-)-inhibitory properties, markedly reduced l¹⁴C]-cystine uptake, glutathione levels, and growth and viability of human MIA PaCa-2 and PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells in vitro. These effects were shown to result primarily from inhibition of cystine uptake mediated by the x(c) (-) cystine transporter and not from inhibition of nuclear factor kappaB activation, another property of sulfasalazine. The efficacy of gemcitabine could be markedly enhanced by combination therapy with sulfasalazine both in vitro and in immunodeficient mice carrying xenografts of the same cell lines. No major side effects were observed in vivo. The results of the present study suggest that the x(c) (-) transporter plays a major role in pancreatic cancer by sustaining or enhancing glutathione biosynthesis, and as such, represents a potential therapeutic target. Sulfasalazine, a relatively nontoxic drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, may, in combination with gemcitabine, lead to more effective therapy of refractory pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE EAF consists of exceedingly rare lesions and presently lacks specific imaging reports. The purpose of this study was to determine the CT and MR imaging features of nasal cavity EAF. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 6 patients with histology-proven EAF in the nasal cavity. All 6 patients underwent CT and 3 patients also underwent MR imaging. The following imaging features were reviewed: 1) location, 2) shape, 3) margin, 4) CT attenuation, and 5) MR imaging signal intensity. In addition, the accompanying changes and the TIC of the DCE MR imaging were analyzed. RESULTS All occurrences of EAF were located at the anterior nasal cavity, arising from the nasal septum in 4 patients, with irregular shape, and the lateral nasal wall in 2, with oval configuration. The mean size was 29.8 mm (range 12-52 mm). On nonenhanced CT, EAF lesions appeared isoattenuated relative to gray matter. On the T1-weighted image, the lesions were isointense in 3 (100%) patients. On the T2-weighted image, the lesions were isointense in 1 (33.3%) patient and hypointense in 2 (66.7%) patients. Occurrences of EAF revealed moderate inhomogeneous contrast enhancement. Three patients underwent DCE MR imaging and the TICs exhibited a rapidly enhancing and slow washout pattern. One patient had bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement, which displayed low signal intensity on the T2-weighted image. CONCLUSIONS A familiarity with imaging findings, including lesion location, isoattenuation and bony changes, and hypointensity on T2-weighted images may help to accurately diagnose this rare entity.

Abstract
With the common and variation peak ratio dual index sequence analysis method, using mean value, smoothness and derivative processing methods to calibrate and exclude interference, in order to increase resolution of spectrum, and then inspected the RSD of stability and repeatability of three different polarity solvent extracts of Gentiana rigescens, calculated the common and variation peak ratio in the UV fingerprint spectral, to evaluate the quality of G. rigescens from different areas. The results showed that, at 40 min, the extract ratio was the best in chloroform, absolute ethyl alcohol or water, and in 30h the RSD of stability respectively were between 0.078-0.455, 0.158-0.462, 0.052-0.682; the RSD of repeatability respectively were between 0.044-0.753, 0.156-0.288, 0.191-2.413. The fingerprint spectral implicated that the largest common peak ratio was 67.6%, while the least was 45.2%, and the largest variation peak ratio was 78.9%, the least was 21.7% among different areas of G. rigescens. The method could be used exactly in qualitative evaluation of two more herb samples, and clarified the similarity level among different areas, also applied the basement for authenticity identification and quality evaluation of herbs.

Abstract
The frontal process of the maxilla occasionally shows a localized FD-like appearance. The purpose of this study was to determine its prevalence and findings on CT. A retrospective study of 1000 consecutive paranasal sinus CT scans was preformed on outpatients without a history of trauma or previous surgery in our hospital during 6 months. CT images were interpreted independently by 2 experienced head and neck radiologists on a PACS system in a bone window setting. Of the 1000 patients (546 males; 454 females), 51 (5.1%,41 males and 10 females) had an FD-like appearance in the frontal process of the maxilla. There was a statistically significant difference between sexes (P < .001). Twenty-nine (56.9%) entities arose from the right frontal process and 22 (43.1%) from the left frontal process. These entities, with well-defined margins, were located at the base of the frontal process of the maxilla, appearing as an ovoid or triangular configuration on axial-plane CT and as a spindle or elliptic shape on the coronal plane. The mean maximal diameter was 9.8 mm (range, 3.6-16.1 mm). These entities exhibited a pagetoid appearance (type I) in 37 (72.5%), a ground-glass appearance (type II) in 8 (15.7%), and a cyst-like appearance (type III) in 6 (11.8%) patients on CT. The FD-like appearance of the frontal process of the maxilla is not rare and can be readily detected by CT.

Abstract
The golden buckwheat Fagopyrum dibotrys produced in Yunnan has a unique anti-cancer effects. It is a main raw material of "Wei Mai ning" capsules which is the national second-class anti-cancer drug. The present paper used (5 : 1) mixed acid as digestive juice to process the sample, and determine the twelve elements including K, Ca, Cu, Na, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd and Co in the Fagopyrum dibotrys by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). The detection limits of this method were 0.017-0.084 microg x mL(-1), the RSDs (n = 8) were all 0.09%-1.87%, and the addition standard recoveries(ASR) (n = 8) were 98.2%-107.4% for all elements. The research results showed that there is rich K(1 477.3 microg x g(-1)) in the Fagopyrum dibotrys, there are not harmful elements Cd and Pb, and this result is mainly related to the geochemistry background where the sample lived. The contents of seven remaining kinds of elements ranked as Na (826.1) > Ca (765.2 > Mg (493.4) > Zn (112.7) > Fe (56.5) > Cu (11.4) > Mn (4.49 microg x g(-1)). This result provides some theoretical basis for the study of internal relations between trace elements in Fagopyrum dibotrys and efficacy. It' s also useful for better development and utilization of the resource.

Abstract
A phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode (PhOLED) with a nanometer-thick (approximately 10 nm) Ni silicide/ polycrystalline p-Si composite anode is reported. The structure of the PhOLED is Al mirror/ glass substrate / Si isolation layer / Ni silicide / polycrystalline p-Si/ V(2)O(5)/ NPB/ CBP: (ppy)(2)Ir(acac)/ Bphen/ Bphen: Cs(2)CO(3)/ Sm/ Au/ BCP. In the composite anode, the Ni-induced polycrystalline p-Si layer injects holes into the V(2)O(5)/ NPB, and the Ni silicide layer reduces the sheet resistance of the composite anode and thus the series resistance of the PhOLED. By adopting various measures for specially optimizing the thickness of the Ni layer, which induces Si crystallization and forms a Ni silicide layer of appropriate thickness, the highest external quantum efficiency and power conversion efficiency have been raised to 26% and 11%, respectively.

Abstract
The tolerant-selenium exopolysaccharide-producing bacterial strain Enterobacter cloacae Z0206 was batch cultured in PDA medium containing optimal concentration of sodium selenite. Selenium was accumulated efficiently in Enterobacter cloacae Z0206 during cultivation with selenium. Inorganic selenite could be transformed into organic forms. Selenium-enriched exopolysaccharide (Se-ECZ-EPS-1) was purified from the fermentation liquid. Selenium content of Se-ECZ-EPS-1 was 12.962microg/g. Se-ECZ-EPS-1 with Mw of 29,300Ka was composed of Glc, Gal and Mann with molar ratio of 8.530:0.061:0.706. Administration of Se-ECZ-EPS-1 to cyclophosphamide (CP)-exposed animals resulted in improvement of cellular and humoral immune responses. These findings indicated that Se-ECZ-EPS-1 may act as potent immunomodulatory agents.

Abstract
The xc− cystine transporter enhances biosynthesis of glutathione, a tripeptide thiol important in drug resistance and cellular defense against oxidative stress, by enabling cellular uptake of cystine, a rate-limiting precursor. Because it is known to regulate glutathione levels and growth of various cancer cell types, and is expressed in the pancreas, we postulate that it is involved in growth and drug resistance of pancreatic cancer. To examine this, we characterised expression of the xc− transporter in pancreatic cancer cell lines, MIA PaCa-2, PANC-1 and BxPC-3, as subjected to cystine-depletion and oxidative stress. The results indicate that these cell lines depend on xc−-mediated cystine uptake for growth, as well as survival in oxidative stress conditions, and can modulate xc− expression to accommodate growth needs. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the transporter was differentially expressed in normal pancreatic tissues and overexpressed in pancreatic cancer tissues from two patients. Furthermore, gemcitabine resistance of cells was associated with elevated xc− expression and specific xc− inhibition by monosodium glutamate led to growth arrest. The results suggest that the xc− transporter by enhancing glutathione biosynthesis plays a major role in pancreatic cancer growth, therapy resistance and represents a potential therapeutic target for the disease.

Abstract
A method for the direct determination of copper and manganese in Pinellia ternata by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with secondary sensitive wavelength was developed. This method can greatly decrease the analytical errors caused by small amount of samples orbig dilution multiple, so its accuracy is better than that with normal atomic absorption spectrometry using sensitive line when determining Cu-rich and Mn-rich Pinellia ternata samples. The detection limits of Cu-rich and Mn-rich are 0-25 mg x (-1) and 0-12 mg x L(-1), the relative standard deviations are 0.42% and 0.66%, and the recovery rates 96%-103% and 97%-102%, respectively. It was found that the method is simple, rapid, useful, accurate and free from the interference of coexistent ions. It has been widely applied to the determination of Pinellia ternata samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The scaling descriptions of the deformation of the air-water interface due to van der Waals attractive forces induced by a paraboloid shaped solid as well as of the force vs distance behavior are systematically discussed theoretically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that the force-distance curves at the proximity of the solid to the air-water interface without contact satisfy a simple and universal scaling law, which can be useful to help study various systems involved in the deformable interface. Moreover, an analytical solution to the E-L differential equation governing the deformation of the water surface profile is obtained from the scaling relation, and the two length scales that quantitatively evaluate the lateral and longitudinal deformation of the air-water interface respectively are hence determined.

Abstract
Relations between various values of the internal friction (tgdelta, Q(-1), Q(-1*), and Lambda/pi) measured by free decay and forced vibration are analyzed systemically based on a fundamental mechanical model in this paper. Additionally, relations between various natural frequencies, such as vibration frequency of free decay omega(FD), displacement-resonant frequency of forced vibration omega(d), and velocity-resonant frequency of forced vibration omega(0) are calculated. Moreover, measurement of natural frequencies of a copper specimen of 99.9% purity has been made to demonstrate the relation between the measured natural frequencies of the system by forced vibration and free decay. These results are of importance for not only more accurate measurement of the elastic modulus of materials but also the data conversion between different internal friction measurements.

Abstract
Antioxidant enzymes (AOEs), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase (CAT) play an important role in protecting tissues from reactive oxygen species (ROS) reactions. The objective of this study was to determine the developmental regulation of AOEs mRNA levels and activity in tissues of different growing phases pigs (Sus scrofa). Nine different tissues were collected from thirty Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire male pigs with six animals in each age (1, 42, 84, 126 and 168 days) to assay for GPx, CAT and CuZnSOD mRNA expression and activities. Results showed that GPx, CAT, and CuZnSOD mRNA levels in liver increased (P<0.05) at the first stage, and thereafter their levels began to decline (P<0.05), and the maximal mRNA levels of these AOEs were seen at the age of 42, 84, and 126 days, respectively. In Muscle, GPx and CAT mRNA level increased from 1 to 84 days and 1 to 126 days, respectively, and thereafter their levels began to decline, whereas CuZnSOD mRNA level steadily increased (P<0.05) following birth. Activity expression of AOEs in selected tissues was increased as pigs became older (P<0.05) with the exception of CuZnSOD activity in muscle, but changes in AOEs mRNA levels between ages did not fully account for all changes in activity. GPx and CuZnSOD mRNA were most abundantly expressed in muscle, while CAT mRNA were most abundant in brain. AOEs may exert cell and tissue-specific roles in metabolic regulation beyond their mere antioxidant potential. In conclusion, expression of AOEs mRNA and activity exhibit different developmental profiles in various tissues of pigs, and the regulation of AOEs is not tightly coordinated in either tissue.

Abstract
Normal maize germplasm could be used to improve the grain yield of popcorn inbreds. Our first objective was to locate genetic factors associated with trait variation and make first assessment on the efficiency of advanced backcross quantitative trait locus (AB-QTL) analysis for the identification and transfer of favorable QTL alleles for grain yield components from the dent corn inbred. A second objective was to compare the detection of QTL in the BC2F2 population with results using F(2:3) lines of the same parents. Two hundred and twenty selected BC2F2 families developed from a cross between Dan232 and an elite popcorn inbred N04 were evaluated for six grain yield components under two environments, and genotyped by means of 170 SSR markers. Using composite interval mapping (CIM), a total of 19 significant QTL were detected. Eighteen QTL had favorable alleles contributed by the dent corn parent Dan232. Sixteen of these favorable QTL alleles were not in the same or near marker intervals with QTL for popping characteristics. Six QTL were also detected in the F(2:3) population. Improved N04 could be developed from 210 and 208 families with higher grain weight per plant and/or 100-grain weight, respectively, and 35 families with the same or higher popping expansion volume than N04. In addition, near isogenic lines containing detected QTL (QTL-NILs) for grain weight per plant and/or 100-grain weight could be obtained from 12 families. Our study demonstrated that the AB-QTL method can be applied to identify and manipulate favorable QTL alleles from normal corn inbreds and combine QTL detection and popcorn breeding efficiently.

Abstract
The experiment was performed to compare the effects of fermented soybean meal (fermented with Aspergillus oryzae 3.042, FSBM) and soybean meal on digestive enzyme activities and intestinal morphology in broilers. Three hundred twenty 1-d-old Ross x Ross male broiler chicks were randomly allocated into 2 dietary treatments for a 6-wk feeding trial, including 0- to 21-d and 21- to 42-d periods. At the end of each stage, 8 broilers of each treatment were killed, and pancreas, small intestine digesta, and duodenum, jejunum, and ileum segments were collected for digestive enzymes and intestinal morphology evaluation. Results of the experiment showed that replacing soybean meal with FSBM in diet increased the activities of trypsin, lipase, and protease significantly in intestinal content of starter broilers (P<0.05) and enhanced the protease activity of grower broilers (P<0.05). Amylase activity was not affected in both feeding periods by the treatments. Compared with the control, broilers fed with FSBM had lower pancreatic trypsin activity (P<0.05) in the starter phase. There were no significant differences on lipase, amylase, and protease activity between the treatments in both growth phases. Increased villus height (P<0.05) and decreased crypt depth (P<0.05) of jejunum mucosa could be observed in the whole growth stage of broilers fed with FSBM. Also, duodenal villus height of starter chicks was also significantly increased (P<0.05).
