Abstract
Verbal fluency is a neuropsychological measure commonly used to examine cognitive-linguistic performance as reported in pediatric TBI literature. We synthesized the scholarly literature of verbal fluency performance in pediatric TBI and estimated the effects of TBI according to: (i) type of verbal fluency task (phonemic or semantic), (ii) severity of TBI, and (iii) time post-injury. Meta-analysis revealed that childhood TBI negatively impacted phonemic fluency and semantic fluency and that effect sizes were larger for children with more severe TBI. The negative effect of TBI was evident across time post injury within each level of severity. Verbal fluency tasks are efficient indicators of potential underlying impairments in lexical knowledge and executive functioning in children with TBI regardless of severity of injury or time post injury. Future research employing verbal fluency tasks are encouraged to explore if age at injury differentiates semantic versus phonemic fluency outcomes across severity levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous research has found that when bilingual and monolingual children are equated on English receptive vocabulary, bilingual children outperform monolingual children on verbal fluency tasks (e.g., Pino Escobar et al., 2018; Zeng et al., 2019). However, the locus of these differences in performance is poorly understood. The current study investigated the linguistic and cognitive components that underlie verbal fluency performance in bilingual and English-speaking monolingual children. METHODS Students in fourth and sixth grade (63 bilinguals and 31 monolinguals) performed both category and letter fluency tasks in English where they named members of provided categories in one-minute trials (e.g., animals, words that start with "F", respectively). Participants also completed a battery of English language measures (e.g., English receptive vocabulary, English word reading fluency) and cognitive measures (e.g., fluid intelligence, working memory). RESULTS Although monolinguals outperformed bilinguals on English receptive vocabulary, no group differences emerged on verbal fluency measures. When English receptive vocabulary served as a covariate, bilinguals generated significantly more items than monolinguals in the verbal fluency tasks. For monolinguals, only English receptive vocabulary accounted for unique variance in verbal fluency performance. However, for bilinguals, receptive vocabulary and fluid intelligence were significant predictors in both fluency tasks. Additionally, for bilinguals, fluid intelligence impacted the strength of the relationship between English receptive vocabulary and letter fluency performance; they were not significantly correlated for individuals with low cognitive ability and were strongly correlated for individuals with high cognitive ability. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that unlike monolingual children, bilingual children recruit additional cognitive resources to meet the demands imposed by the verbal fluency task.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enables assessment of prefrontal hemodynamic response. This study explored the feasibility of fNIRS in determining hemodynamic changes related to cognitive task performance in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) in order to assess its potential as a diagnostic tool. METHODS We measured changes in oxygenated hemoglobin [O2Hb] during a verbal fluency task (VFT), which activates frontal brain regions involved in working memory, in 15 TBI patients and 21 healthy controls using a 3-channel fNIRS system. Baseline and absolute changes in [O2Hb] during the VFT were compared to the rest condition to obtain effect-scores. Patients were tested in the acute phase and six weeks after injury. Task-related fNIRS responses were categorized into positive, negative, and no response. RESULTS For patients and controls, a positive response was observed in 61% (n = 22), a negative response in 19% (n = 7), and no response in 19% (n = 7). Patients showed a mean [O2Hb] effect-score of 2.18 compared to 2.52 in the control group (p = 0.743) in the acute phase after injury. Follow-up effect-scores did not differ significantly (p = 0.721). Decreased task performance was associated with a higher effect-score in controls compared to decreased task performance with lower effect-score in the patient group. DISCUSSION Our study shows that it is feasible to assess hemodynamic response with fNIRS in pediatric TBI patients. A trend of reduced prefrontal hemodynamic response in patients in the acute phase after injury was found suggesting impairment in cognitive performance that warrants further study.

Abstract
While it is well established that individuals with schizophrenia exhibit a wide range of neurocognitive deficits, there is significant heterogeneity in this regard. Impairments in verbal fluency appear to present consistently across most individuals with the illness. The present study examined the stability of verbal fluency abilities in chronic schizophrenia longitudinally. It was hypothesized that semantic but not phonemic verbal fluency performance would be stable over one year. Data was extracted from a larger study that followed 53 outpatients (70% male; mean age = 39.2 years) diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. At each testing interval (baseline, 6, and 12 months), the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia was administered, which included phonemic (i.e., F, S) and semantic (i.e., animals) verbal fluency tasks. No significant differences were found across time points for semantic and phonemic verbal fluency with respect to mean number of words generated, clustering, and switching. The findings provide evidence of stability in semantic and phonemic verbal fluency abilities in chronic schizophrenia. Moving forward, it would be valuable to examine verbal fluency performance longitudinally across multiple stages of illness (i.e., clinically high-risk to chronic schizophrenia).

Abstract
In recent years, research focusing on childhood has reported that communication difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to the social reciprocity difficulties inherent to ASD, as well as severe social anxiety and decreased verbal fluency. However, there have been no reports regarding these correlations and causal relationships in adulthood. The aim of this study was to reveal the effects of social reciprocity, social anxiety, and letter fluency on communicative behaviors in adults with ASD (n = 33, aged 18-43 years, mean age = 27.88 years) and to compare these to typically developing (TD) adults (n = 35, 19-40 years, mean age = 28.03 years). We validated a model using structural equation modeling in which social reciprocity not only directly affected communicative behaviors, but also indirectly affected communicative behaviors mediated by social anxiety and verbal fluency. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that communicative behaviors patterns differed between the ASD and TD groups, as the ASD group had high goodness of fit with the hypothesis model while the TD group had low goodness of fit. These findings signify that in ASD, in addition to problems in social reciprocity, social anxiety (fear) is a risk factor for worsening communicative behaviors difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to provide a basis for future research examining the neural mechanisms that underlie the beneficial effect of an intervention program, Photo-Integrated Conversation Moderated by Robots (PICMOR), on verbal fluency in older adults as identified in our previous randomized controlled trial. In this preliminary report, we conducted an additional experiment using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) after the intervention period. Specifically, we investigated the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) characteristics of the intervention group (INT) compared to the control group (CONT). METHODS rsfMRI data were acquired from 31 and 30 participants in INT and CONT, respectively, after the intervention. In the analyses, two of the most important regions in verbal fluency, the left inferior and middle frontal gyri, were selected as seed regions, and the rsFCs were compared between groups. We also conducted regression analyses for rsFCs using the difference in individual phonemic verbal fluency task (PVFT) scores between the pre- and post-intervention periods (i.e., post- minus pre-intervention) as an independent variable. RESULTS We found higher rsFC in INT than in CONT between the left inferior frontal gyrus as a seed region and the temporal pole and middle frontal gyrus. The rsFC strength between the left inferior frontal gyrus and temporal pole positively correlated with an increased PVFT score between the pre- and post-intervention periods. In contrast, we found lower rsFC in INT than in CONT between the left middle frontal gyrus as a seed region and the posterior cingulate cortex, precuneus, and postcentral gyrus. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the beneficial intervention effect of PICMOR on verbal fluency is characterized by enhanced rsFC of the left inferior frontal gyrus with semantic and executive control-related regions and suppressed rsFC between the left middle frontal gyrus and posterior cortical midline structures. No definitive conclusions can be made because of a lack of rsfMRI data before the intervention. However, this pilot study provides the candidates for rsFCs, reflecting the beneficial effects of PICMOR on the brain network involved in verbal fluency. Abstract
The ability to recognize the structural components of words, known as morphological processing, was recently associated with the bilateral ventral white matter pathways, across different writing systems. However, it remains unclear whether these associations are specific to the context of reading. To shed light on this question, in the current study we investigated whether the ventral pathways are associated with morphological processing in an oral word production task that does not involve reading. Forty-five participants completed a morpheme-based fluency task in Hebrew, as well as diffusion MRI (dMRI) scans. We used probabilistic tractography to segment the major ventral and dorsal white matter pathways, and assessed the correlations between their microstructural properties and performance on the morpheme-based fluency task. We found significant correlations between morpheme-based fluency and properties of the bilateral ventral tracts, suggesting that the involvement of these tracts in morphological processing extends beyond the reading modality. In addition, significant correlations were found in the frontal aslant tract (FAT), a dorsal tract associated with oral fluency and speech production. Together, our findings emphasize that neurocognitive associations reflect both the cognitive construct under investigation as well as the task used for its assessment. Lastly, to elucidate the biological factors underlying these correlations, we incorporated the composite hindered and restricted model of diffusion (CHARMED) framework, measured in independent scans. We found that only some of our findings could be attributed to variation in a CHARMED-based estimate of fiber density. Further, we were able to uncover additional correlations that could not be detected using traditional dMRI indices. In sum, our results show that the involvement of the ventral tracts in morphological processing extends to the production domain, and demonstrate the added value of including sensitive structural measurements in neurocognitive investigations.

Abstract
Neuroimaging evidence has suggested that Chinese-language processing differs from that of its alphabetic-language counterparts. However, the underlying white matter pathway correlations between semantic and phonological fluency in Chinese-language processing remain unknown. Thus, we investigated the differences between two verbal fluency tests on 50 participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and 36 healthy controls (HC) with respect to five groups (ventral and dorsal stream fibers, frontal-striatal fibers, hippocampal-related fibers, and the corpus callosum) of white matter microstructural integrity. Diffusion spectrum imaging was used. The results revealed a progressive reduction in advantage in semantic fluency relative to phonological fluency from HC to single-domain aMCI to multidomain aMCI. Common and dissociative white matter correlations between tests of the two types of fluency were identified. Both types of fluency relied on the corpus callosum and ventral stream fibers, semantic fluency relied on the hippocampal-related fibers, and phonological fluency relied on the dorsal stream and frontal-striatal fibers. The involvement of bilateral tracts of interest as well as the association with the corpus callosum indicate the uniqueness of Chinese-language fluency processing. Dynamic associations were noted between white matter tract involvement and performance on the two fluency tests in four time blocks. Overall, our findings suggest the clinical utility of verbal fluency tests in geriatric populations, and they elucidate both task-specific and language-specific brain-behavior associations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) may show impairments of frontal cortical-subcortical circuits with difficulties on cognitive flexibility tasks. One marker of poor flexibility is "perseveration" behavior, which refers to inappropriate and involuntary production of iterative responses not adequate to the current task demands. This study explored frequency, type, and possible cognitive mechanisms of verbal perseverations in a large sample of HD patients. METHOD A sample of 128 patients with HD underwent phonological and category verbal fluency tests to assess perseverative errors, within a wide neuropsychological, psychopathological, motor, and functional assessment. RESULTS Perseverative errors in verbal fluency task occurred in 89 (69.5%) patients. Patients showing perseverations scored significantly lower than patients without perseverations on tasks tapping executive and motor functions and on functional independence scales. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant independent association of verbal perseverations with scores on Trail Making Test only. Conclusions: Verbal perseverations are frequent in HD patients and are likely related with impairments of attentional switching and working memory, hampering tracking of verbal responses already produced. Perseverative behavior may serve as a useful clinical marker of cognitive and functional impairment in patients with HD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Verbal fluency (VF) impairment is a strong predictor of social functioning in bipolar disorder (BPD). The enzyme catechol-O- methyltransferase (COMT) has a critical role in cognitive responses by modulating dopaminergic activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Here, we investigated the role of COMT polymorphism (i) in VF performance as well as (ii) in modulation of PFC activity during a VF-task in euthymic BPD patients. METHODS 30 subjects with remitted BPD-I and 23 healthy controls (HCs) were genotyped for COMT Val158Met (rs4680) polymorphism and were compared in a VF-task. PFC activity was measured by 24-Channel Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy. RESULTS Bipolar subjects displayed lower VF performance than HCs. During the VF-task, BPD-group displayed higher activity than HCs in the Brocca's area, Premotor-cortex and supplementary motor area (SMA). In the index group, Val/Met polymorphism was associated with higher activity in the left- frontopolar and dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) during the VF-task. LIMITATIONS Antipsychotic use may have interfered with the results. CONCLUSIONS Increased activity in the Brocca's area may represent compensation of low VF performance, whereas hyperactivity in premotor-cortex and SMA may be associated with increased behavioral intention and/or restlessness in BPD. Higher activity in left-frontopolar and DLPC among Val/Met individuals compared to Met-homozygotes may represent less effective prefrontal dopaminergic signaling in Val/Met individuals with BPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy affects at least 50 million individuals worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA). Cognitive impairment is common in people with epilepsy (PWE) yet, little is known on the burden of cognitive impairment in people with epilepsy in sSA. This study was thus designed to assess cognitive impairment in PWE or epilepsy-associated neurocognitive disorders (EAND) in a rural population in Cameroon. METHODS This was a case-control study including PWE and age/sex-matched healthy controls from July to September 2017 in Bilomo, a village in the Mbam and Kim Division. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS), Dubois' Five Word testing, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Isaac's Set Test and the Clock drawing test were administered to the study participants to evaluate global and specific cognitive functions. RESULTS Eighty participants were included (40 cases and 40 controls) with a mean age of 25.78 years. Using the MoCA, 87.5% of cases had cognitive impairment, against 37.5% of controls (p < 0.001; OR 11.67; CI 3.40-45.09). Using the IHDS, the prevalence of global cognitive impairment was 84.6% among the cases against 40% for the controls (p = <0.001; OR 7.07; CI 2.29-29.19). Specifically, executive function deficits (92.5% of cases vs 40.0% of controls p = <0.001 OR = 18.50 CI; 4.48-105.08) and decreased verbal fluency (100% of cases against 45% of controls p < 0.001) were the most affected cognitive domains. Longer duration of epilepsy and higher seizure frequency were associated with global cognitive impairment. Low level of education was associated with both decreased verbal fluency and executive dysfunction while a longer stay in Bilomo correlated with poor results on the Isaac's Set Test. CONCLUSION The prevalence of cognitive impairment appears to be much higher in PWE in the Mbam valley, particularly decreased executive function and verbal fluency, than in people without epilepsy. Longer disease duration, higher seizure frequency, low level of education and length of stay in Bilomo are associated with poorer cognitive performance. More studies are needed to refine evaluation tools to better characterize and manage EAND in sSA.

Abstract
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience a variety of symptoms sometimes including atypicalities in language use. The study explored differences in semantic network organisation of adults with ASD without intellectual impairment. We assessed clusters and switches in verbal fluency tasks ('animals', 'human feature', 'verbs', 'r-words') via curve fitting in combination with corpus-driven analysis of semantic relatedness and evaluated socio-emotional and motor action related content. Compared to participants without ASD (n = 39), participants with ASD (n = 32) tended to produce smaller clusters, longer switches, and fewer words in semantic conditions (no p values survived Bonferroni-correction), whereas relatedness and content were similar. In ASD, semantic networks underlying cluster formation appeared comparably small without affecting strength of associations or content.

Abstract
Language disorders are increasingly recognised in Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), supporting the view of ALS as a multi-system disorder, impacting cognitive and motor function. However, the language impairments are heterogeneous and recent focus has been on determining the language profile across the ALS spectrum with little focus on spontaneous speech. The current study systematically investigated a wide range of language abilities in an unselected ALS sample (N = 22), including spontaneous speech. We analysed the ALS patients' performance as a group, compared to age-, education- and IQ-matched healthy controls (N = 21), and as a case series to identify dementia and specific language profiles. The ALS group was impaired on measures of spontaneous speech, word fluency and action naming. By contrast, object naming, semantic memory (object and actions), sentence comprehension and repetition (word and sentences) were comparable to healthy controls. In line with recent suggestions, our ALS patients' action naming (but not action semantic) deficit does not support the notion that action processing may be selectively impaired in ALS. The case series demonstrated that 14% of patients had probable dementia, 31% showed significant cognitive and/or language impairment and 55% were unimpaired, consistent with the spectrum of cognitive and language impairments reported in the literature. In addition, 36% of ALS patients produced significantly fewer words per minute on a spontaneous speech task than the control group, with this difference remaining when the ALS patients with frontotemporal dementia were excluded from the analysis. This pattern was observed across the ALS spectrum and in both limb and bulbar onset patients. The pattern of performance observed in the present study suggests that spontaneous speech is reduced across the ALS spectrum even in those with intact core language abilities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) improves cardinal motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) but can worsen verbal fluency (VF). An optimal site of stimulation for overall motor improvement has been previously identified using an atlas-independent, fully individualized, field-modeling approach. This study examines if cardinal motor components (bradykinesia, tremor, and rigidity) share this identified optimal improvement site and if there is co-localization with a site that worsens VF. METHODS An atlas-independent, field-modeling approach was used to identify sites of maximal STN DBS effect on overall and cardinal motor symptoms and VF in 60 patients. Anatomic coordinates were referenced to the STN midpoint. Symptom severity was assessed with the MDS-UPDRS part III and established VF scales. RESULTS Sites for improved bradykinesia and rigidity co-localized with each other and the overall part III site (0.09 mm lateral, 0.93 mm posterior, 1.75 mm dorsal). The optimal site for tremor was posterior to this site (0.10 mm lateral, 1.40 mm posterior, 1.93 mm dorsal). Semantic and phonemic VF sites were indistinguishable and co-localized medial to the motor sites (0.32 mm medial, 1.18 mm posterior, 1.74 mm dorsal). CONCLUSION This study identifies statistically distinct, maximally effective stimulation sites for tremor improvement, VF worsening, and overall and other cardinal motor improvements in STN DBS. Current electrode sizes and voltage settings stimulate all of these sites simultaneously. However, future targeted lead placement and focused directional stimulation may avoid VF worsening while maintaining motor improvements in STN DBS.

Abstract
Cognitive changes including reduced word production in verbal fluency (VF) tasks are frequently observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) with ambiguous effects of dopaminergic medication on these symptoms. Here, we studied the impact of dopaminergic medication on specific cognitive components underlying VF task performance in 21 participants with PD on their regular medication and following dopamine withdrawal compared with healthy controls. We used temporal cluster analysis (TCA) to differentiate phases of VF output relating to fast automatic lexical activation ('clusters') and slower attention-demanding shifts ('switches'). Dopaminergic medication led to increased switching and, in non-alternating VF tasks, to the formation of smaller and shorter word clusters. The number of switches was correlated with higher cognitive scores and showed an inverse relationship with VF error rates. Increased switching operations during VF task performance can be interpreted in view of nigrostriatal dopaminergic roles for balancing system state versus change propensities. The additional effect on word clustering suggests a modulation of semantic spreading activation mechanisms underlying lexical search, presumably involving non-nigrostriatal, e.g., mesocortical dopaminergic networks.

Abstract
There is growing interest in understanding the behavioral and neural mechanisms of catatonia. Here, we examine cognition and brain structure in schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) patients with a history of catatonia. A total of 172 subjects were selected from a data repository; these included SSD patients with (n = 43) and without (n = 43) a history of catatonia and healthy control subjects (n = 86). Cognitive functioning was assessed using the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) and brain structure was assessed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in the CAT12 toolbox. SSD patients with a history of catatonia showed worse performance on tests of verbal fluency and processing speed compared to SSD patients without such a history, even after controlling for current antipsychotic and benzodiazepine use. No differences were found between patients with and without a history of catatonia in terms of brain structure. Both patient groups combined showed significantly smaller grey matter volumes compared to healthy control subjects in brain regions consistent with prior studies, including the anterior cingulate, insular, temporal, and medial frontal cortices. The results highlight a cognitive-motor impairment in SSD patients with a history of catatonia. Challenges and limitations of examining brain structure in patients with a history of catatonia are discussed.

Abstract
Internally generated responses are centrally affected in parkinsonian disorders. This study investigated the cognitive components crucial for response generation as reflected in performance on verbal and non-verbal fluency tasks, which require voluntary internal generation of multiple responses. Participants with parkinsonian disorders (N = 58: 29 Parkinson's disease [PD], 22 corticobasal syndrome [CBS], 8 progressive supranuclear palsy [PSP]) and 89 age-matched controls completed baseline cognitive assessments and eight fluency tasks of four types: word, design, gesture, and ideational. We analysed the total number of correct responses generated and error rates (including repetitions and rule breaks) for PD, CBS and Control groups. The small PSP patient group's performance is reported for comparative purposes only. CBS patients were significantly reduced in the number of correct responses generated across all fluency tasks, without incurring significant errors. The only exception was that CBS patients produced a significantly higher number of repetitions on one nonverbal task (design fluency). By contrast, PD patients' generation was reduced on only three fluency tasks (phonemic word, meaningless gesture, conventional idea). However, they also produced a high error rate on four fluency tasks (rule-break errors: phonemic/semantic word; repetitions: semantic word, meaningless gestures). Overall, the pattern of fluency task performance differs between patient groups. Specifically, the quantity of responses generated is differentially and primarily affected in CBS patients, whereas the quality of responses generated is primarily affected in PD patients. This suggests potentially different patterns of performance for parkinsonian disorders and has implications for the cognitive processes crucial for internally-guided response generation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cognitive impairment is frequent in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and can impact on activities of daily living. The capacity to differentiate real changes from background statistical noise induced by human, instrumentational, and environmental variations inherent to the evaluation would improve cognitive assessments. OBJECTIVE To assess the short-term reproducibility of cognitive tests in non-multiple sclerosis (non-MS) persons and PwMS. METHODS Sixty-two PwMS and 19 non-MS persons performed 2 measurements, 1 week apart, of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) and phonological and semantic verbal fluency. Test-retest reliability was evaluated by the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and agreement by standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC). RESULTS The reliability of the cognitive variables studied had moderate to high ICC values (ICC > 0.8) in both populations. The threshold to consider a significant cognitive modification evaluated by SEM and MDC was lower in PwMS compared with non-MS persons. CONCLUSIONS SDMT and verbal fluency have good short-term reproducibility in PwMS. Specific SEM and MDC cutoffs based on the same design of evaluation (especially retest timing) and to the targeted pathological population (MS vs. healthy) should systematically be used to consider cognitive modification as significant in research protocol as well as in clinical practice.

Abstract
The personality traits of neuroticism, openness, and conscientiousness are relevant factors for cognitive aging outcomes. The present study examined how these traits were associated with cognitive abilities and corresponding resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the default mode network (DMN) in an older and predominantly minority sample. A sample of 58 cognitively unimpaired, largely African-American, older adults (M age = 68.28 ± 8.33) completed a standard RSFC magnetic resonance imaging sequence, a Big Five measure of personality, and delayed memory, Stroop, and verbal fluency tasks. Personality trait associations of within-network connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), a hub of the DMN, were examined using a seed-based approach. Trait scores were regressed on cognitive performance (delayed memory for neuroticism, Stroop for conscientiousness, and verbal fluency for openness). Greater openness predicted greater verbal fluency and greater RSFC between the PCC and eight clusters, including the medial prefrontal cortex, left middle frontal gyrus, and precuneus. Greater PCC–precuneus connectivity predicted greater verbal fluency. Neuroticism and conscientiousness did not significantly predict either cognitive performance or RSFC. Although requiring replication and elaboration, the results implicate openness as a contributing factor to cognitive aging via concomitant cognitive performance and connectivity within cortical hubs of the DMN and add to the sparse literature on these variables in a diverse group of older adults.

Abstract
OBJECT Verbal fluency (VF) is the cognitive test which shows the most consistent and persistent post-operative decline after subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the reasons are not completely understood, and the debate has focused on two hypotheses: a surgical effect or an acute STN-DBS effect. METHODS We recruited 3 PD samples: (1) a group assessed before and after STN-DBS surgery (2) a group assessed On vs. Off STN-DBS and (3) an unoperated PD control group. All groups performed letter, category and switching category VF tasks. The total number of correct words generated were noted and measures of clustering and switching were also obtained. RESULTS We found a significant effect of STN-DBS surgery on all VF tasks which was associated with a post-operative decline in the total number of words generated, and a reduction of phonemic switching during the letter and category VF tasks, and a reduction of semantic clustering for category VF. By contrast to the effects of surgery, acute On vs. Off stimulation did not influence the number of words generated on any of the VF tasks. Acute stimulation only produced two effects on the category VF task: increased semantic cluster size and decreased number of semantic switches when STN-DBS was switched On. CONCLUSIONS This study differentiates between the effects of STN-DBS surgery and acute stimulation on VF performance. Our findings indicate that the STN-DBS effect on VF are a surgical and not an acute STN stimulation effect.

Abstract
The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is a recently documented white matter tract that connects the inferior and superior frontal gyri with a tendency to be more pronounced in the left hemisphere. This tract has been found to play a role in language functions, particularly verbal fluency. However, it is not entirely clear to what extent FAT asymmetry is related to performance benefits in language-related tasks. In the present study, we aimed to fill this gap by examining the correlations between asymmetric micro- and macro-structural properties of the FAT and performance on verbal fluency and lexical decision tasks. The results showed no correlation between the FAT and verbal fluency; however, lexical decision was correlated with FAT laterality. Specifically, greater left lateralization in both micro- and macro-structural properties was related to faster lexical decision response times. The results were not due merely to motor or decision-making processes, as responses in a simple discrimination control task showed no correlation with laterality. These data are the first to suggest a role for the FAT in mediating processes underlying lexical decision.

Abstract
The verbal fluency task—listing words from a category or words that begin with a specific letter—is a common experimental paradigm that is used to diagnose memory impairments and to understand how we store and retrieve knowledge. Data from the verbal fluency task are analyzed in many different ways, often requiring manual coding that is time intensive and error-prone. Researchers have also used fluency data from groups or individuals to estimate semantic networks—latent representations of semantic memory that describe the relations between concepts—that further our understanding of how knowledge is encoded. However computational methods used to estimate networks are not standardized and can be difficult to implement, which has hindered widespread adoption. We present SNAFU: the Semantic Network and Fluency Utility, a tool for estimating networks from fluency data and automatizing traditional fluency analyses, including counting cluster switches and cluster sizes, intrusions, perseverations, and word frequencies. In this manuscript, we provide a primer on using the tool, illustrate its application by creating a semantic network for foods, and validate the tool by comparing results to trained human coders using multiple datasets.

Abstract
Verbal fluency is commonly used to evaluate cognitive dysfunction in a variety of neuropsychiatric diseases, yet the neurobiology underlying performance of this task is incompletely understood. Electrocorticography (ECoG) provides a unique opportunity to investigate temporal activation patterns during cognitive tasks with high spatial and temporal precision. We used ECoG to study high gamma activity (HGA) patterns in patients undergoing presurgical evaluation for intractable epilepsy as they completed an overt, free-recall verbal fluency task. We examined regions demonstrating changes in HGA during specific timeframes relative to speech onset. Early pre-speech high gamma activity was present in left frontal regions during letter fluency and in bifrontal regions during category fluency. During timeframes typically associated with word planning, a distributed network was engaged including left inferior frontal, orbitofrontal and posterior temporal regions. Peri-Rolandic activation was observed during speech onset, and there was post-speech activation in the bilateral posterior superior temporal regions. Based on these observations in the context of prior studies, we propose a model of neocortical activity patterns underlying verbal fluency.

Abstract
Methylation levels measured at defined sites across the genome have recently been shown to be correlated with an individual's chronological age. Age acceleration, or the difference between age estimated from DNA methylation status and chronological age, has been proposed as a novel biomarker of aging. In this study, the cross-sectional association between two different measures of age acceleration and cognitive function was investigated using whole blood samples from 2,157 African American participants 47-70 years of age in the population-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study. Cognition was evaluated using three domain-specific tests. A significant inverse association between a 1-year increase in age acceleration calculated using a blood-based age predictor and scores on the Word Fluency Test was found using a general linear model adjusted for chronological age, gender, and years of education (β = -0.140 words; p = .001) and after adding other potential confounding variables (β = -0.104 words, p = .023). The results were replicated in 1,670 European participants in the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study (fully adjusted model: β = -0.199 words; p = .034). A significant association was also identified in a trans-ethnic meta-analysis across cohorts that included an additional 708 European American ARIC study participants (fully adjusted model: β = -0.110 words, p = .003). There were no associations found using an estimate of age acceleration derived from multiple tissues. These findings provide evidence that age acceleration is a correlate of performance on a test of verbal fluency in middle-aged adults.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is now conceptualized as a biological entity defined by amyloid and tau deposition and neurodegeneration, with heterogeneous clinical presentations. With the aid of in vivo biomarkers, clinicians are better poised to examine clinical syndromic variability arising from a common pathology. Word retrieval deficits, measured using verbal fluency and confrontation naming tests, are hallmark features of the early clinical stages of the amnestic presentations of AD, specifically in category fluency and naming with relatively spared letter fluency. As yet, there is no consensus regarding performance on these tests in atypical clinical phenotypes of AD, including posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) and logopenic primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA), in individuals who are amyloid-positive (Aβ+) but present with different clinical profiles and patterns of neurodegeneration compared to amnestic AD. The goal of the current study is to determine how Aβ+ individuals across the syndromic spectrum of AD perform on three different word retrieval tasks. A secondary goal is to determine the neuroanatomical substrates underlying word retrieval performance in these Aβ+ individuals. Thirty-two Aβ+ participants with the amnestic presentation, 16 with Aβ+ PCA, 22 with Aβ+ lvPPA, and 99 amyloid-negative (Aβ-) control participants were evaluated with verbal fluency and visual confrontation naming tests as well as high-resolution MRI. The Aβ+ patient groups were rated at very mild or mild levels of severity (CDR 0.5 or 1) and had comparable levels of global cognitive impairment (average MMSE = 23.7 ± 3.9). Behaviorally, we found that the word retrieval profile of PCA patients is comparable to that of amnestic patients, characterized by intact letter fluency but impaired category fluency and visual confrontation naming, while lvPPA patients demonstrated impairment across all tests of word retrieval. Across all AD variants, we observed that letter fluency was associated with cortical thickness in prefrontal, central precuneus, lateral parietal and temporal cortex, while category fluency and naming were associated with cortical thickness in left middle frontal gyrus, posterior middle temporal gyrus, and lateral parietal cortex. Visual confrontation naming was uniquely associated with atrophy in inferior temporal and visual association cortex. We conclude that a better understanding of the word retrieval profiles and underlying neurodegeneration across the AD syndromic spectrum will help improve interpretation of neuropsychological profiles with regard to the localization of neurodegeneration, particularly in the atypical AD variants.
