Pillar[6]arene-Based Supramolecular Nanocatalysts for Synergistically Enhanced Chemodynamic Therapy by the Intracellular Cascade Reaction

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on the intracellular Fenton reaction has become increasingly explored in cancer treatment. However, the mildly acidic tumor microenvironment and the limited amount of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) will create issues for CDT to perform a sustained and high-efficiency treatment. Therefore, how to selectively reduce the pH value and augment the amount of H₂O₂ in tumor tissues has become the key factor for realizing excellent CDT. Besides, the majority of the reported CDT systems have been constructed from iron-based inorganic or metal-organic framework nanomaterials due to the decisive role of metals in CDT, which restricts the development of CDT. In this study, inspired by the host-guest interactions between pillar[6]arene and ferrocene, a ternary pillar[6]arene-based supramolecular nanocatalyst (GOx@T-NPs) for CDT is reported for the first time. GOx@T-NPs not only exhibited a high-efficiency catalytic ability to convert glucose into hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) and to reduce the pH value inside cancer cells for significant enhancement of the CDT effect, but they also showed sensitive glutathione-induced camptothecin (CPT) prodrug release capacity for further improving the efficiency of CDT. Hence, GOx@NPs possessed excellent ability to synergistically enhance the CDT. Additionally, an antitumor mechanism study showed that the prominent tumor inhibition capacity of GOx@T-NPs was derived from trimodal synergistic interactions of CDT, starvation therapy, and chemotherapy. Moreover, GOx@T-NPs manifested good biocompatibility and tumor selectivity with few side effects in major organs. This work broadens the range of materials available for CDT and demonstrates new developments in pillar[n]arene-based multimodal synergistic treatment systems.

Supramolecular Drug Delivery System from Macrocycle-Based Self-Assembled Amphiphiles for Effective Tumor Therapy

Intelligent drug delivery systems (DDSs) that can improve therapeutic outcomes of antitumor agents and decrease their side effects are urgently needed to satisfy special requirements of treatment of malignant tumors in clinics. Here, the fabrication of supramolecular self-assembled amphiphiles based on the host-guest recognition between a cationic water-soluble pillar[6]arene (WP6A) host and a sodium decanesulfonate guest (G) is reported. The chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) can be encapsulated into the formed vesicle (G/WP6A) to construct supramolecular DDS (DOX@G/WP6A). WP6A affords strong affinities to G to avoid undesirable off-target leakage during delivery. Nanoscaled DOX@G/WP6A is capable of preferentially accumulating in tumor tissue via enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. After internalization by tumor cells, the abundant adenosine triphosphate (ATP) binds competitively with WP6A to trigger the disintegration of self-assembled vesicles with the ensuing release of DOX. In vitro and in vivo research confirmed that DOX@G/WP6A is not only able to promote antitumor efficacy but also reduce DOX-related systemic toxicity. The above favorable findings are ascribed to the formation of ternary self-assembly, which profits from the combination of the factors of the EPR effect and the ATP-triggered release.

Nanocatalysis under Nanoconfinement: A Metal-Free Hybrid Coacervate Nanodroplet as a Catalytic Nanoreactor for Efficient Redox and Photocatalytic Reactions

Nature utilizes cellular and subcellular compartmentalization to efficiently drive various complex enzymatic transformations via spatiotemporal control. In this context, designing of artificial nanoreactors for efficient catalytic transformations finds tremendous importance in recent times. One key challenge remains the design of multiple catalytic centers within the confined space of a nanoreactor without unwanted agglomeration and accessibility barrier for reactants. Herein, we report a unique blend of nanoscience and chemical catalysis using a metal-free hybrid synthetic protocell as a catalytic nanoreactor for redox and photocatalytic transformations, which are otherwise incompatible in bulk aqueous medium. Hybrid coacervate nanodroplets (NDs) fabricated from 2.5 nm-sized carbon dots (CDs) and poly(diallyldimethyl)ammonium chloride have been utilized toward reductive hydrogenation of nitroarenes in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄). It has been found that the reduction mechanism follows the classical Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model at the surface of embedded CDs inside the NDs via the generation of reactive surface hydroxyl groups. These NDs show excellent recyclability without any compromise on reaction kinetics and conversion yield. Importantly, spatiotemporal control over the hydrogenation reaction has been achieved using two mixed populations of coacervates. Moreover, efficient visible light-induced photoredox conversion of ferricyanide to ferrocyanide and artificial peroxidase-like activity have also been demonstrated inside these catalytic NDs. Our findings indicate that the individual polymer-bound CD inside the NDs acts as the catalytic center for both the redox and photocatalytic reactions. The present study highlights the unprecedented catalytic activity of the metal-free CD-based coacervate NDs and paves the way for next-generation catalytic nanoreactors for a wide range of chemical and enzymatic transformations.

Application of Er,Cr:YSGG laser versus photopolymerization after silver diamine fluoride in primary teeth

Examine the effect of dental curing light and laser treatments applied after Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) on dentin hardness in carious primary molars. This in-vitro study consisted of 30 extracted primary molars with caries extending into dentin without pulpal involvement. The collected teeth were randomly divided into three groups: group 1: received SDF then Sub-ablative low-energy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser, group 2: received SDF followed by application of curing light for 40 s, group 3: had SDF treatment only. In all groups, 38% Ag (NH3)2F SDF was used. Vickers hardness test was performed on sound dentin below carious lesion. Kruskal-Wallis Test was used to determine the mean difference in dentin hardness of the groups at 5% Significance level using SPSS software. Surface hardness of sound dentin below the carious lesion was statistically significantly higher in the laser + SDF group (891.24 ± 37.33 kgf/mm2) versus the two other groups (Light cure + SDF = 266.65 ± 90.81 kgf/mm2 and SDF only = 117.91 ± 19.19 kgf/mm2) with p-value ≤ 0.001. Although Photopolymerization of SDF increases the surface hardness of sound dentin below the carious lesion, applying laser after SDF has the highest surface hardness due to the laser's sub-ablation of dentin.

Engineering the Redox-Driven Channel for Precisely Regulating Nanoconfined Glutathione Identification and Transport

Bioinspired artificial nanochannels for molecular and ionic transport have extensive applications. However, it is still a huge challenge to achieve an intelligent transport system with high selectivity/efficiency and controllability. Inspired by glutathione transport across the plasma membrane via redox regulation, we herein designed and fabricated a redox-reactive artificial nanochannel based on the host-guest chemical strategy. The nanochannel platform achieved high selectivity/efficiency for the identification and transmission of glutathione in the confined space. In addition, this nanochannel can switch between the ON and OFF states through the redox reaction. This redox-regulated system can provide a potential application for detection/binding of biological analytes and redox-controlled drug release.

Rapid Volumetric Optoacoustic Tracking of Individual Microparticles In Vivo Enabled by a NIR-Absorbing Gold-Carbon Shell

Rapid volumetric in vivo visualization of circulating microparticles can facilitate new biomedical applications, such as blood flow characterization or targeted drug delivery. However, existing imaging modalities generally lack the sensitivity to detect the weak signals generated by individual micrometer-sized particles distributed across millimeter- to centimeter-scale depths in living mammalian tissues. Also, the temporal resolution is typically insufficient to track the particles in an entire three-dimensional region. Herein, we introduce a new type of monodisperse (4 μm) silica-core microparticle coated with a shell formed by a multilayered structure of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) to provide strong optoacoustic (OA) absorption-based contrast. We capitalize on the unique advantages of a state-of-the-art high-frame-rate OA tomography system to visualize and track the motion of these core-shell particles individually and volumetrically as they flow throughout the mouse brain vasculature. The feasibility of localizing individual solid particles smaller than red blood cells opens new opportunities for mapping the blood flow velocity, enhancing the resolution and visibility of OA images, and developing new biosensing assays.

Design, Synthesis, Antibacterial, Antifungal and Anticancer Evaluations of Novel β-Pinene Quaternary Ammonium Salts

β-pinene is a monoterpene isolated from turpentine oil and numerous other plants' essential oils, which has a broad spectrum of biological activities. In the current work, six novel β-pinene quaternary ammonium (β-PQA) salts were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their antifungal, antibacterial and anticancer activities. The in vitro assay results revealed that compounds 4a and 4b presented remarkable antimicrobial activity against the tested fungi and bacteria. In particular, compound 4a showed excellent activities against F. oxysporum f.sp. niveum, P. nicotianae var.nicotianae, R. solani, D. pinea and Fusicoccumaesculi, with EC50 values of 4.50, 10.92, 9.45, 10.82 and 6.34 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, compound 4a showed the best antibacterial action against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and B. subtilis, with MIC at 2.5, 0.625, 1.25 and 1.25 μg/mL, respectively. The anticancer activity results demonstrated that compounds 4a, 4b, 4c and 4f exhibited remarkable activity against HCT-116 and MCF-7 cell lines, with IC50 values ranged from 1.10 to 25.54 μM. Notably, the compound 4c displayed the strongest cytotoxicity against HCT-116 and MCF-7 cell lines, with the IC50 values of 1.10 and 2.46 μM, respectively. Furthermore, preliminary antimicrobial mechanistic studies revealed that compound 4a might cause mycelium abnormalities of microbial, cell membrane permeability changes and inhibition of the activity of ATP. Altogether, these findings open interesting perspectives to the application of β-PQA salts as a novel leading structure for the development of effective antimicrobial and anticancer agents.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Bis-morpholine Triazine Quaternary Ammonium Salts

Efficient, environmentally and economically sustainable, and nontoxic antibacterial products are of global relevance in the fight against microorganism contamination. In this work, an easy and straightforward method for the synthesis of bis-morpholino triazine quaternary ammonium salts (bis-mTQAS) is reported, starting from 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine or 2,4-dichloro-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine and various N-alkylmorpholines. Bis-mTQAS were tested as antimicrobials against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains. The best-performing bis-mTQAS were found to achieve total disinfection against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 at 50 and 400 μg/mL, respectively. Distinctively, bis-mTQAS with the highest antimicrobial efficiency had lowest cytotoxicity.

Bitter Flavored, Soft Composites for Wearables Designed to Reduce Risks of Choking in Infants

Wireless, skin-integrated devices for continuous, clinical-quality monitoring of vital signs have the potential to greatly improve the care of patients in neonatal and pediatric intensive-care units. These same technologies can also be used in the home, across a broad spectrum of ages, from beginning to end of life. Although miniaturized forms of such devices minimize patient burden and improve compliance, they represent life-threatening choking hazards for infants. A materials strategy is presented here to address this concern. Specifically, composite materials are introduced as soft encapsulating layers and gentle adhesives that release chemical compounds designed to elicit an intense bitter taste when placed in the mouth. Reflexive reactions to this sensation strongly reduce the potential for ingestion, as a safety feature. The materials systems described involve a non-toxic bitterant (denatonium benzoate) as a dopant in an elastomeric (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) or hydrogel matrix. Experimental and computational studies of these composite materials and the kinetics of release of the bitterant define the key properties. Incorporation into various wireless skin-integrated sensors demonstrates their utility in functional systems. This simple strategy offers valuable protective capabilities, with broad practical relevance to the welfare of children monitored with wearable devices.

Antimicrobial Activity of Gemini Surfactants with Ether Group in the Spacer Part

Due to their large possibility of the structure modification, alkylammonium gemini surfactants are a rapidly growing class of compounds. They exhibit significant surface, aggregation and antimicrobial properties. Due to the fact that, in order to achieve the desired utility effect, the minimal concentration of compounds are used, they are in line with the principle of greenolution (green evolution) in chemistry. In this study, we present innovative synthesis of the homologous series of gemini surfactants modified at the spacer by the ether group, i.e., 3-oxa-1,5-pentane-bis(N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromides). The critical micelle concentrations were determined. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the synthesized compounds were determined against bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 10536 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538; yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231; and molds Aspergillus niger ATCC 16401 and Penicillium chrysogenum ATCC 60739. We also investigated the relationship between antimicrobial activity and alkyl chain length or the nature of the spacer. The obtained results indicate that the synthesized compounds are effective microbicides with a broad spectrum of biocidal activity.

Design, Synthesis, Antibacterial, and Antitumor Activity of Linear Polyisocyanide Quaternary Ammonium Salts with Different Structures and Chain Lengths

The development of organic polymer materials for disinfection and sterilization is thought of as one of the most promising avenues to solve the growth and spread of harmful microorganisms. Here, a series of linear polyisocyanide quaternary ammonium salts (L-PQASs) with different structures and chain lengths were designed and synthesized by polymerization of phenyl isocyanide monomer containing a 4-chloro-1-butyl side chain followed by quaternary amination salinization. The resultant compounds were characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. The antibacterial activity of L-PQASs with different structures and chain lengths against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The L-POcQAS-M50 has the strongest antimicrobial activity with MICs of 27 μg/mL against E. coli and 32 μg/mL against S. aureus. When the L-PQASs had the same polymerization degree, the order of the antibacterial activity of the L-PQASs was L-POcQAS-Mn > L-PBuQAS-Mn > L-PBnQAS-Mn > L-PDBQAS-Mn (linear, polyisocyanide quaternary ammonium salt, monomer, n = 50,100). However, when L-PQASs had the same side chain, the antibacterial activity reduced with the increase of the molecular weight of the main chain. These results demonstrated that the antibacterial activity of L-PQASs was dependent on the structure of the main chain and the length of the side chain. In addition, we also found that the L-POcQAS-M50 had a significant killing effect on MK-28 gastric cancer cells.

2D Black Phosphorus-Based Cytomembrane Mimics with Stimuli-Responsive Antibacterial Action Inspired by Endotoxin-Associated Toxic Behavior

Biomimetic membrane materials have been widely explored and developed for drug loading and tissue engineering applications due to their excellent biocompatibility and abundant reaction sites. However, novel cytomembrane mimics have been lacking for a long time. In this study, black phosphorus (BP) was used as the foundation for a new generation of promising cytomembrane mimics due to its multiple similarities to cytomembranes. Inspired by the dual function of endotoxins on membranes, we prepared a BP-based cytomembrane mimic with controllable antibacterial ability via electrostatic interaction between BP and [1-pentyl-1-quaternary ammonium-3-vinyl-imidazole]Br ([PQVI]Br). The release of PQVI could be manipulated in different conditions by adjusting the electrostatic force, thereby achieving controllable antibacterial ability. This report confirms the possibility of using BP as a new material to mimic cytomembranes and provides a new concept of controllable antibacterial action based on endotoxins.

Wearable Sensors Based on Solid-Phase Molecular Self-Assembly: Moisture-Strain Dual Responsiveness Facilitated Extremely High and Damage-Resistant Sensitivity

Wearable sensing technologies have gained increasing interest in biomedical fields because they are convenient and could efficiently monitor health conditions by detecting various physiological signals in real time. However, common film sensors often neglect body moisture and enhance the sensitivity by enhancing the conductive dopants and self-healing ability. We report in this work a supramolecular film sensor based on solid-phase molecular self-assembly (SPMSA), which smartly utilizes the body moisture to enhance the sensitivity for human-machine interaction. The carbon nanotube (CNT)-doped SPMSA film is able to capture environmental moisture quickly. Upon contact to human skin, the moisture not only promotes the junction between CNTs but also contributes to the conductivity. As a result, the sensitivity can be enhanced 4 times. In this way, we are able to obtain the highest sensitivity of 700% with the lowest CNT doping rate of 0.5%. Furthermore, the current sensor displays damage-inert sensing performance. In the presence of a hole of up to 50% of the film area, the sensitivity remains unaffected due to the decreases in the absolute conductivity of the film sensor before and after a trigger to the same extent. In this way, we have developed a new principle in the design of a film sensor for human-machine interaction, which releases the sensor from focus on promoting conductivity and self-healing materials.

From Unimolecular Template to Silver Nanocrystal Clusters: An Effective Strategy to Balance Antibacterial Activity and Cytotoxicity

Silver nanomaterials have attracted a great deal of interest due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, it is still challenging to balance the high antibacterial efficiency with low damage to biological cells of silver nanostructures, especially when the diameter decreases to less than 10 nm. Here, we developed a new type of Ag nanohybrid material via a unimolecular micelle template method, which presents amazing antibacterial activities and almost noncytotoxicity. First, water-soluble multiarm star-shaped brushlike copolymer α-CD-g-[(PEO₄₀-g-PAA₅₀)-b-PEO₅]₁₈ was precisely synthesized and its micelle behavior in different solvents was revealed. Then, nanocrystal clusters assembled by Ag grains (Ag@Template NCs) were prepared through an in situ redox route using the unimolecular micelle of α-CD-g-[(PEO₄₀-g-PAA₅₀)-b-PEO₅]₁₈ as the soft template, AgNO₃ as a precursor, and tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBAB) as the reducing agent. The overall size of the achieved Ag@Template NCs is controlled by the template structure at around 40 nm (D_h in DMF), and the size of the Ag grain can be easily regulated from ∼1 to ∼5 nm by adjusting the feeding ratio of AgNO₃/acrylic acid (AA) units in the template from 1:10 to 1:1. Benefitting from the structural design of the template, all Ag@Template NCs prepared here exhibit excellent dispersibility and chemical stability in different aqueous environments (neutral, pH = 5.5, and 0.9% NaCl physiological saline solution), which play a crucial role in the long-term storage and potential application in a complex physiological environment. The antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests indicate that Ag@Template NCs display much better performance than Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which have a comparable overall size of ∼25 nm. The inhibitory capability of Ag@Template NCs to bacteria strongly depends on the grain size. Specifically, the Ag@Template-1 NC assembled by the smallest grains (1.6 ± 0.3 nm) presents the best antibacterial activity. For E. coli (-), the MIC value is as low as 5 μg/mL (0.36 μg/mL of Ag), while for S. aureus (+), the value is around 10 μg/mL (0.72 μg/mL of Ag). The survival rate of L02 cells and lactate dehydrogenase assay together illustrate the low cytotoxicity possessed by the prepared Ag@Template NCs. Therefore, the proposed Ag@Template NC structure successfully resolves the high reactivity, instability, and fast oxidation issues of the ultrasmall Ag nanoparticles, and integrates high antibacterial efficiency and nontoxicity to biological cells into one platform, which implies its broad potential application in biomedicine.

Preparation of Cross-linked Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt Hydrogel Films Loading Drug of Gentamicin Sulfate for Antibacterial Wound Dressing

Hydrogels, possessing high biocompatibility and adaptability to biological tissue, show great usability in medical applications. In this research, a series of novel cross-linked chitosan quaternary ammonium salt loading with gentamicin sulfate (CTMCSG) hydrogel films with different cross-linking degrees were successfully obtained by the reaction of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (TMCS) and epichlorohydrin. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterize the chemical structure and surface morphology of CTMCSG hydrogel films. The physicochemical property, gentamicin sulphate release behavior, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity of the CTMCSG against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were determined. Experimental results demonstrated that CTMCSG hydrogel films exhibited good water stability, thermal stability, drug release capacity, as well as antibacterial property. The inhibition zone of CTMCSG hydrogel films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus could be up to about 30 mm. Specifically, the increases in maximum decomposition temperature, mechanical property, water content, swelling degree, and a reduction in water vapor permeability of the hydrogel films were observed as the amount of the cross-linking agent increased. The results indicated that the CTMCSG-4 hydrogel film with an interesting physicochemical property, admirable antibacterial activity, and slight cytotoxicity showed the potential value as excellent antibacterial wound dressing.

One-Pot Facile Synthesis of Double-Shelled Mesoporous Silica Microcapsules with an Improved Soft-Template Method for Sustainable Pest Management

A controlled release formulation based on silica microcapsules is an ideal selection to improve both the effective utilization and duration of pesticides to decrease ecological damage. Herein, a simple and green method for preparing double-shelled microcapsules was developed using a newly prepared quaternary ammonium ionic liquid (IL) as the functional additive to entrap avermectin (Ave) in mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) and tannic acid-Cu (TA-Cu) complex as the sealing agent to form the core-shell structure (Ave-IL@MSN@TA-Cu). The obtained microcapsules with an average size of 538 nm had pH-responsive release property and good stability in soil. The half-life of microcapsules (34.66 days) was 3 times that of Ave emulsifiable concentrate (EC) (11.55 days) in a test soil, which illustrated that microcapsules could protect Ave from rapid degradation by microorganisms by releasing TA, copper, and quaternary ammonium in the soil. Ave-IL@MSN@TA-Cu microcapsules had better nematicidal activity and antibacterial activity than Ave EC due to the synergistic effect of Ave, IL, and copper incorporated in the microcapsules. Pot experiments showed that the control efficacy of microcapsules was 87.10% against Meloidogyne incognita, which is better than that of Ave EC (41.94%) at the concentration of 1.0 mg/plant by the root-irrigation method after 60 days of treatment owing to the extended duration of Ave in microcapsules. The simple and green method for the preparation of double-shelled microcapsules based on natural quaternary ammonium IL would have tremendous potential for the extensive development of controlled release pesticide formulations.

Polyquaternium enhances the colloidal stability of chitosan-capped platinum nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity

Here, for the first time, we have developed a novel green synthesis method where chitosan acts as a reducing agent and as a colloidal stabilizer, together with polyquaternium for the synthesis of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs). It was observed that only chitosan-stabilized PtNPs (Ch@PtNPs) were stable up to pH 5, with a diameter of around 89 nm. The diameter of the Ch@PtNPs increased with the increase in pH, indicating the instability of Ch@PtNPs at neutral and alkaline mediums. However, when polyquaternium (PQ) (a cationic polymer) was added as a stabilizer along with chitosan, the diameter of chitosan/polyquaternium stabilized PtNPs (Ch/PQ@PtNPs), i.e. 87 nm, remained almost constant up to pH 9. Similarly, the pH-dependent decrease in the surface charge of Ch@PtNPs was also attenuated with the addition of polyquaternium. This indicates high colloidal stability of Ch/PQ@PtNPs in acidic, neutral, as well as alkaline mediums. It was observed that Ch/PQ@PtNPs exhibited high antibacterial activity againstStaphylococcus aureus, as compared to uncapped PtNPs and Ch@PtNPs. Thus, the addition of PQ increases the antibacterial properties of Ch/PQ@PtNPs againstStaphylococcus aureusby enhancing the stability of PtNPs at neutral pH.

Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan-based hydrogel as the split H5N1 mucosal adjuvant: Structure-activity relationship

In this study, 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HTCC)-based hydrogel was devised as a mucosal adjuvant for H5N1 vaccine. Aimed to investigate the structure activity relationship between HTCC hydrogel and immune response, we prepared a series of HTCC hydrogel with defined quaternization degrees (DQs, 0%, 21%, 41%, 60%, 80%). Results suggested that with DQ increasing, the positive charge and gelation time of HTCC hydrogel increased but the viscosity decreased. We applied in vivo imaging system and found that the moderate DQ 41% prolonged antigen residence time in nasal cavity, resulting in the most potent systemic responses (IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, HI). While, the lowest DQ 0% produced the best mucosal IgA antibody responses, most likely due to the closer contact with mucosa. Furthermore, the influence of animal gender was also discussed. These data add to the growing understanding of the relationship between physicochemical features of chitosan-based hydrogel and how they influence the immune responses.

Orthogonal Design of a Water-Soluble meso-Tetraphenylethene-Functionalized Pillar[5]arene with Aggregation-Induced Emission Property and Its Therapeutic Application

An orthogonal strategy was utilized for synthesizing a novel water-soluble pillar[5]arene (m-TPEWP5) with tetraphenylethene-functionalized on the bridged methylene group (meso-position) of the pillararene skeleton. The obtained macrocycle exhibit both the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect and interesting host-guest property. Moreover, it can be made to bind with a tailor-made camptothecin-based prodrug guest (DNS-G) to form AIE-nanoparticles based on host-guest interaction and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer process for fabricating a drug delivery system. This novel type of water-soluble AIE-active macrocycle can serve as a potential fluorescent material for cancer diagnosis and therapy. In addition, the present orthogonal strategy for designing meso-functionalized aromatic macrocycles may pave a new avenue for creating novel supramolecular structures and functional materials.

Sorption of brilliant green dye using soybean straw-derived biochar: characterization, kinetics, thermodynamics and toxicity studies

The present study was aimed to investigate brilliant green (BG) dye sorption onto soybean straw biochar (SSB) prepared at 800 °C and further understanding the sorption mechanism. Sorption kinetic models such as pseudo-first and pseudo-second order were executed for demonstrating sorption mechanism between the dye and biochar. Results of kinetics study were fitted well to pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 0.997) indicating that the reaction followed chemisorption mechanism. Furthermore, the effect of various parameters like sorbent dose, dye concentration, incubation time, pH and temperature on dye sorption was also studied. The maximum dye removal percentage and sorption capacity for SSB (800 °C) within 60 min were found to be 99.73% and 73.50 mg g- 1, respectively, at pH 8 and 60 °C temperature, whereas adsorption isotherm studies showed a higher correlation coefficient values for Freundlich model (R2 0.990-0.996) followed by Langmuir model suggesting that sorption process was multilayer. The characterization of biomass and biochar was performed with the aid of analytical techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR analysis showed active groups on biochar surface. BET study revealed higher surface area of biochar (194.7 m2/g) than the biomass (12.84 m2/g). Besides, phyto- and cytogenotoxic studies revealed significant decrease in the toxicity of dye containing water after treating with SSB. Therefore, this study has proved the sorption potential of soybean straw biochar for BG dye and could be further considered as sustainable cost-effective strategy for treating the textile dye-contaminated wastewater.

Pattern Formation upon Evaporation of Sessile Droplets of Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures on Silicon Wafers

The formation of coffee-ring deposits upon evaporation of sessile droplets containing mixtures of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and two different anionic surfactants were studied. This process is driven by the Marangoni stresses resulting from the formation of surface-active polyelectrolyte–surfactant complexes in solution and the salt arising from the release of counterions. The morphologies of the deposits appear to be dependent on the surfactant concentration, independent of their chemical nature, and consist of a peripheral coffee ring composed of PDADMAC and PDADMAC–surfactant complexes, and a secondary region of dendrite-like structures of pure NaCl at the interior of the residue formed at the end of the evaporation. This is compatible with a hydrodynamic flow associated with the Marangoni stress from the apex of the drop to the three-phase contact line for those cases in which the concentration of the complexes dominates the surface tension, whereas it is reversed when most of the PDADMAC and the complexes have been deposited at the rim and the bulk contains mainly salt.

Soybean-Oil-Based CO2-Switchable Surfactants with Multiple Heads

Oligomeric surfactants display the novel properties of low surface activity, low critical micellar concentration and enhanced viscosity, but no CO2 switchable oligomeric surfactants have been developed so far. The introduction of CO2 can convert tertiary amine reversibly to quaternary ammonium salt, which causes switchable surface activity. In this study, epoxidized soybean oil was selected as a raw material to synthesize a CO2-responsive oligomeric surfactant. After addition and removal of CO2, the conductivity analyzing proves that the oligomeric surfactant had a good response to CO2 stimulation. The viscosity of the oligomeric surfactant solution increased obviously after sparging CO2, but returned to its initial low viscosity in the absence of CO2. This work is expected to open a new window for the study of bio-based CO2-stimulated oligomeric surfactants.

Supramolecular Nanoplatform Based on Mesoporous Silica Nanocarriers and Pillararene Nanogates for Fungus Control

Synthetic fungicides have been widely used to protect crops from fungal diseases. However, excessive use of synthetic fungicides leads to the generation of fungicide resistance in fungal pathogens. Recently, smart cargo delivery systems have been introduced for the construction of a pesticide delivery nanoplatform, benefiting from their controlled release performance. Herein, a fungal pathogen microenvironment-responsive supramolecular fungicide nanoplatform has been designed and constructed, using quaternary ammonium salt (Q)-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-Q NPs) as nanocarriers loaded with berberine hydrochloride (BH) and carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP[5]A) as nanogates to form BH-loaded CP[5]A@MSN-Q NPs for effective inhibition of Botrytis cinerea. CP[5]A as nanogates can endow the fungicide nanoplatform with pH stimuli-responsive release features for the control of fungicide release. The loaded BH, as a natural plant fungicide, provides an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling B. cinerea. Interestingly, we use oxalic acid (OA) secreted by B. cinerea as a trigger so that BH can be released from the fungicide nanoplatform on demand under pathogen microenvironments for controlling B. cinerea. The experimental results indicate that the fabricated fungicide nanoplatform could effectively inhibit the mycelial growth and spore germination, providing a new way for the management of B. cinerea in actual application.

Influence of Small Quantities of Water on the Physical Properties of Alkylammonium Nitrate Ionic Liquids

This paper presents a comprehensive study of two alkylammonium nitrate ionic liquids. As part of this family of materials, mainly ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and also propylammonium nitrate (PAN) have attracted a great deal of attention during the last decades due to their potential applications in many fields. Although there have been numerous publications focused on the measurement of their physical properties, a great dispersion can be observed in the results obtained for the same magnitude. One of the critical points to be taken into account in their physical characterization is their water content. Thus, the main objective of this work was to determine the degree of influence of the presence of small quantities of water in EAN and PAN on the measurement of density, viscosity, electrical conductivity, refractive index and surface tension. For this purpose, the first three properties were determined in samples of EAN and PAN with water contents below 30,000 ppm in a wide range of temperatures, between 5 and 95 °C, while the last two were obtained at 25 °C. As a result of this study, it has been concluded that the presence of water is critical in those physical properties that involve mass or charge transport processes, resulting in the finding that the absolute value of the average percentage change in both viscosity and electrical conductivity is above 40%. Meanwhile, refractive index (≤0.3%), density (≤0.5%) and surface tension (≤2%) present much less significant changes.

Boosted sono-oxidative catalytic degradation of Brilliant green dye by magnetic MgFe2O4 catalyst: Degradation mechanism, assessment of bio-toxicity and cost analysis

The magnetic MgFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via a facile co-precipitation technique and was comprehensively characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and VSM. The prepared NPs were used as catalyst in presence of ultrasound (US) irradiation to activate persulfate (PS) for generation of sulfate radicals (SO₄^·-) for boosted degradation of toxic Brilliant Green (BG) dye. Preliminary experiments revealed that highest BG dye degradation efficiency of 91.63% was achieved at MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose of 1.0 g/L, PS dose of 300 mg/L, and initial dye concentration of 70 ppm within 15 min of US irradiation. However, only US, US in presence of PS oxidation and US in presence of MgFe₂O₄ catalyst have shown 20.2%, 83.6% and 45.0% of BG dye removal, respectively. Furthermore, response surface methodology (RSM) based central composite design (CCD) was executed to investigate the effect of interaction between independent variables such as MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose (0.5-1.5 g/L), PS dose (150-350 mg/L), initial BG dye concentration (50-150 ppm) and US irradiation time (4-12 min). The RSM based quadratic model was used to predict the experimental data, and the prediction accuracy was confirmed by analysis of variance (R² = 0.98). The established RSM model has predicted the optimum experimental conditions as MgFe₂O₄ catalyst dose of 0.75 g/L, PS dose of 300 mg/L, initial dye concentration of 75 ppm and sonication time of 10 min. Subsequently, the treatment cost analysis was performed for all thirty experimental runs of CCD, and the RSM predicted response was found to be evidently optimum as this has delivered best economic condition (140 $/kg of BG removed) with respect to relative dye removal (%). COD removal and residual sulfate analysis have demonstrated satisfactory reduction of COD (90.31%) as well as sulfate ions (42.87 ppm) in the dye solution after treatment. Results of degradation pathway analysis portrayed the transformation of BG molecule (M/Z ratio 385) into simpler fractions with M/Z ratio of 193, 161, 73, and 61. Moreover, the toxicity analysis revealed that sono-catalytically activated PS system has efficiently reduced the toxicity level of BG dye from 93.9% to 5.13%.
