Nitrogen source primarily supplied by amino acids and the efficacy for maximal growth of rats

The effect of osmotic pressure of diets on be food intake of young rats was investigated by comparing the nutritional effect of casein with the corresponding amino acid mixture at 3.2% nitrogen level. Changes in the osmolarity of diets due to the type of dietary carbohydrate had a little effect on food intake, whereas partial substitution of casein for amino acids resulted in significant increase in food intake. Weight gain and food intake of rats fed the 25% replaced amino acid diet were compared with those of rats fed the casein diet. Food intake was lower at 12.5% replacement than at 25% replacement. These observation suggest that a well-balanced amino acid mixture supported maximal growth of rats when 25% of the amino acid mixture was replace with casein. This suggestion could be experimentally confirmed by using an amino acid mixture based on the amino acid composition of whole-egg protein.

Comparative analysis of persistent dyskinesias of long-term usage with neuroleptics in France and in Japan

The prevalence of tardive dyskinesia was studied in two psychiatric hospitals, one in France (Hopital psychiatrique de Bassens) and the other in Japan (Inogashire Hospital). Twenty-four of 131 patients in Bassens exhibited this disorder, and 22 of 123 patients in Inogashira. No difference was observed between the prevalence of both hospitals. Higher incidence in older age and a marked coexistence of chronic brain disorders were common characteristics of the patients affected by this disorder in both hospitals. All cases in France and in Japan presented a typical oral dyskinesia, but in general the symptoms in France were less intermittent and more pronounced than those in Japan. There existed a considerable contrast of the psychotropic medications between the two hospitals, which seemed to be related not to the prevalence, but to the severity of the symptoms.

Comparison of efficacy of lithium carbonate and chlorpromazine in mania. Report of collaborative study group on treatment of mania in Japan

A multi-institutional cooperative study comparing lithium carbonate with chlorpromazine was conducted, using a controlled double-blind design in a series of 80 cases of endogenous manic psychosis, to evaluate the drugs' clinical utility and efficacy, characteristics of therapeutic effect, and side-effects. Dosages employed were consistently at an equipotent ratio of 4:1 (lithium carbonate:chlorpromazine). Physicians' overall ratings showed lithium carbonate as significantly superior to chlorpromazine in efficacy for manic psychosis. Improvements of basic mood and of disturbance in speech and voice were prominent with lithium carbonate. Onset of the therapeutic effect of lithium carbonate was within ten days of medication in 65% of the patients, significantly faster than with chlorpromazine. Side-effects encountered with lithium carbonate therapy at dose levels not higher than 1,800 mg/day were milder and less frequent compared with those seen with chlorpromazine.

The effect of protein malnutrition on the susceptibility of the chicken nose to Newcastle disease virus

The effect of protein malnutrition on the susceptibility of the chicken nose to Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was studied. Chicks that were rendered acutely protein-deficient for 1 or 3 weeks from the time of hatching yielded approximately 10 times more NDV from their throats than did normally fed animals 7 days after inoculation with the virus. Serum antibody responses in the protein-deficient animals 14 days after inoculation of NDV was statistically lower than in the normally fed animals. These results were supported by the mucociliary transport time in the turbinate and sinus, as well as by the histological changes in the turbinate. This difference may thus be due to the fact that normally fed maturing chicks develop an increased resistance to virus which is depressed in protein-deficient animals.
