Abstract
A competitive enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for measuring polypeptide- and antigenic site-specific antibodies against measles virus (MV) was developed. Three monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the fusion (F) and one MAb against the hemagglutinin (H) protein of MV were labelled with biotin and used in biotin-streptavidin EIA system. The inhibition of the binding of the labelled MAbs by the bound serum samples was measured in EIA and the titers were defined by reading at the level of 25% inhibition. The titers increased from acute to early convalescent measles sera in all the tests and antibody levels to the F protein increased earlier than antibodies to the H protein. The ratio of antibodies against 2 different antigenic sites on the F protein was significantly higher in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients than in normal blood donors. Similarly, SJL mice immunized with MV antigen had higher ratios of the corresponding antibodies than Balb/c mice. The results indicate that antibody response to different polypeptides and antigenic sites on the same polypeptide can be studied with the developed method and that the responses against different antigenic sites are independent.

Abstract
We studied in vivo lymphocyte activation in patients who underwent cardiac operation. A large number of deoxyribonucleic acid-synthesizing cells characterized by 3H-thymidine uptake and morphologically atypical lymphocytes were found after operation in the peripheral blood samples of patients, the peak level occurring on the sixth or seventh postoperative day. Most of the deoxyribonucleic acid-synthesizing cells were in the B cell fraction. The number of antibody secreting cells in the patients' peripheral blood samples was found increased from the normal level after operation. Immunoglobulin A-secreting cells were the most elevated fraction. The percentage of helper (OKT4) and suppressor (OKT8) cells in the postoperative samples was not significantly different from that in the preoperative samples. Only a few were Ia antigen positive cells. Co-culture of patients' B cells with their own T cells and with the T cells taken from two healthy controls revealed no signs of any helper or suppressor effect on these antibody-secreting cells. The results show that after cardiac operation the peripheral blood of patients contains an increased number of immunoglobulin secreting cells. The regulatory T-lymphocytes seem not to have any effect in vitro on these in vivo activated cells.

Abstract
Blood samples were collected from 14 pairs of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and from age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was tested against the K562 cell line on the day of collection and again after 3 days in vitro culture with medium or with purified protein derivative of tuberculin (PPD), inactivated rubella virus or inactivated measles virus antigen. Lymphocytes from MS patients had a lower spontaneous cytotoxic activity compared to the controls both on the day of collection (P less than 0.025) and after 3 days in culture with medium alone (P less than 0.025). The activity decreased during in vitro culture in both groups, but the decrease was greater among MS patients (P less than 0.05). In cultures with antigens, a strong increase of NK-like cell-mediated cytolysis (NK-like CMC) was noted especially in cultures stimulated with PPD. There were no significant differences in the increase of the activity among MS patients and control subjects. A significant correlation between the increase of NK-like CMC and the lymphocyte blast transformation response induced by each antigen was found.

Abstract
A 171/2-year-old male subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patient underwent a disease relapse after an 8 year remission. A total of 14 paired peripheral blood/cerebrospinal fluid specimens were obtained during this relapse. These specimens were tested for 13 parameters of non-specific or measles virus-specific cell-mediated and humoral immunity. There was a rapid and significant fluctuation in all of these tests. Total loss of measles-specific T cells response was found during the relapse. The response re-appeared and measles-specific antibodies increased significantly later on. The results suggest that measles virus infection was reactivated in this patient and that the observed immunological changes could at least partially be explained by this.

Abstract
The kidney cortex of 32 Finnish horses was analysed chemically for cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) content and by light microscopy for histopathological changes of the tissues. Cd concentrations in kidney cortex ranged from 6.9 to 91.6 mg/kg wet weight with an average of 31.9 mg/kg. Se concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg with an average of 1.0 mg/kg. The age of the horses varied from 1.5 to 32 years; mean age was 16 years. Cd levels in kidney cortex seemed to increase linearly up to an age of about 16 years. In old (over 16 years) horses no such correlation could be found. Se concentrations were found to decrease in relation to age. The horses with higher than 1 mg/kg Se in kidney cortex had less PAS-positive casts than horses with low Se content. Among the total population of the horses no correlation could be demonstrated between Cd and Se concentrations in kidney cortex. However, the horses with more than 40 mg/kg Cd in their kidney cortex had a slightly positive correlation between Cd and Se concentrations.

Abstract
A rare case of intrahepatic presinusoidal portal hypertension, due to massive infiltration of portal zones by chronic lymphatic leukaemia, revealed by sonographic patent umbilical vein, is reported. Sonographic patent umbilical vein which is considered specific for portal hypertension in liver cirrhosis may be present in myeloproliferative syndromes with liver involvement too.

Abstract
Fourteen lesions (nine hepatocellular carcinomas, four hepatic metastases from gastric carcinoma, and one peritoneal metastasis from transitional cell carcinoma) in 12 patients were treated with percutaneous injection of 95% ethyl alcohol under guidance with ultrasound. Requirements for this procedure included inadequate response to conventional treatment or refusal of surgery, easy identification of the tumor with sonography, and a tumor diameter less than 4 cm. Three to nine administrations (75 in all) were performed for each lesion according to its size and to the results of the fine needle biopsy. All lesions had posttreatment sonographic structural changes of fibronecrotic degeneration. All lesions less than 3.2 cm in diameter (11 cases) that underwent the final fine needle biopsy were negative for malignant cells and had volume reductions up to 100%. No biochemical changes or untoward clinical sequelae were detected. Percutaneous intratumoral alcohol injection is inexpensive, easy to perform, and potentially valuable in the treatment of selected small neoplastic lesions of the liver and abdomen.

Abstract
A measles virus (MV) Lec strain conditional-lethal (temperature-sensitive) mutant, designated MV ts38, has been isolated from 5-fluorouracil-mutagenized stock. The mutant has been characterized with regard to growth characteristics at 32 degrees C (permissive temperature) and 39 degrees C (non-permissive temperature). Virus-specific RNA transcription and/or translation appeared to be blocked at the non-permissive temperature as no virus-specific products could be detected by biochemical or immunological procedures. Following initiation of viral replication at 32 degrees C, with subsequent shift-up to 39 degrees C, presynthesized nucleoprotein (NP) was transported to, and accumulated in the cell nucleus whereas other viral proteins could not be detected there. A corresponding accumulation of NP in the nucleus is most often seen in association with MV neurotropic subacute sclerosing panencephalitis isolates in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
T-cell lines specific for purified tuberculin (PPD), rubella, and herpes simplex virus (HSV) antigens were established from two Dw1/w2 heterozygous subjects. Fresh peripheral blood monocytes from healthy individuals with shared and non-shared D-antigens were used as presenting cells and the T-cell lines as responders in lymphocyte blast transformation assays with specific antigens. An HLA-restricted reaction was seen with all the antigens, although the PPD- and HSV-specific cell lines reacted stronger than rubella-specific lines when the specific antigens were presented by monocytes not sharing the D-antigens. A significantly lower response was seen when rubella antigen was presented by Dw2 positive monocytes as compared to response promoted by Dw1 positive monocytes (p less than 0.0001, Mann-Whitney U-test), whereas no such difference was seen in responses to PPD or herpes simplex antigen.

Abstract
Levels of immune complexes (ICs) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients were measured using a solid-phase C1q radioimmunoassay. Single or serial serum specimens were available from 19 patients, while serial CSF specimens were available from two patients. ICs isolated from one CSF specimen by C1q immobilized to Affi-Gel were analyzed for measles virus antigens by binding of measles virus-specific antisera and by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by Western blotting. Of 78 serum specimens analyzed, 36 (46%) were positive for ICs. When the 8 patients with 3 or more serum specimens were analyzed, 6 had fluctuating levels of ICs. Two of 5 CSF specimens obtained from a patient during acute disease onset were IC-positive, while a second patient exhibited a rapid increase and decrease of IC levels in 14 CSF specimens obtained during an acute disease exacerbation. Composition analysis of ICs isolated from one of the CSF specimens revealed the presence of antigens corresponding in size to measles virus polymerase, nucleoprotein, and possibly, hemagglutinin polypeptides. These results show that SSPE patients frequently have ICs, that IC levels fluctuate in both serum and CSF, and that the ICs are at least partially composed of measles virus antigens.

Abstract
We compared healthy blood donors with and without HLA-Dw2 and -Dw3 in immunity assays, the results of which have been found to be abnormal in multiple sclerosis or autoimmune diseases. Tests included lymphocyte blast transformation responses to rubella, mumps and purified tuberculin (PPD), in vitro production of IgG and interferons, natural killer (NK) cell function and measurement of serum antibodies to measles, rubella, mumps and herpes simplex viruses. HLA-Dw2-positive subjects had a lower lymphocyte blast transformation response to rubella virus antigen and a lower NK cell function compared with HLA-Dw2-negative subjects. The presence of HLA-Dw3 was associated with an increased spontaneous and mumps virus-induced immunoglobulin production. No significant differences were found in other assays. These results support the existence of HLA-Dw2- and Dw3-associated deviation of immune responsiveness, which may contribute to the susceptibility of multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune type diseases.

Abstract
The sonographically patent umbilical vein is commonly considered a sign of portal hypertension and is held to be specific by some authors. We found sonographically patent umbilical veins in 11 patients with hepatic cirrhosis and esophageal varices, and in three subjects without liver disease and without esophageal varices. All subjects were submitted to Doppler flowmetry, which, with the investigation of the direction of venous flow, proved to be a simple discriminatory test.
