Cognitive correlates of multidimensional trait anxiety

Endler and Okada's (1975) S-R Inventory of General Trait Anxiousness, modified to measure cognitive irrationality, was administered to college students (46 women and 28 men) in introductory psychology. Positive correlations (.36—.75) between self-reported anxiety and irrationality were found. Differences in the ranges of correlations in different situations ate discussed. The advantages of employing the modified inventory and some theoretical problems in Rational-Emotive Theory as a comprehensive theory of personality and as psychotherapy are considered.

The entrapped intestinal balloon: deflation by hyperbaric therapy

The problem of an entrapped, distended intestinal tube balloon has been successfully resolved on four occasions by hyperbaric therapy. At four to five atmospheres absolute, the volume and diameter of the balloon in all four cases was reduced sufficiently to allow easy and safe extubation. The alternative approaches of forceful, traumatic extubation or laparotomy and enterotomy with their inherent dangers and problems were thus avoided.

Purification and characterization of baboon endogenous virus DNA polymerase

An RNA-directed DNA polymerase was purified from baboon endogenous type-C virus by successive column chromatography on DEAE cellulose, phosphocellulose and hydroxyapatite. The purified DNA polymerase has a molecular weight of 68 000, a pH optimum of 8.0, a Mn2+ optimum of 1 mM, and a KCl optimum of 40 mM. The purified enzyme transcribes heteropolymeric regions of viral 60--70 S RNA isolated from different type-C viruses. The purified enzyme is immunologically related to a similarly purified polymerase from the cat endogenous type-C virus RD114.

The effect of sensory denervation on rabbits' knee joints. A light and electron microscopic study

Unilateral sensory denervation of the hind limb in a group of rabbits caused progressive atrophy of cells in all structures of the knee joint, whether or not the joint was protected by a plaster cast. Immobilization without denervation caused proliferative changes, first in the synovium and then in the articular cartilage. The initial changes in the articular cartilage following sensory denervation occurred in the middle layers, suggesting that nutritional deficiency was involved. In contrast, the first changes in the cartilage of intact immobilized limbs occurred in the superficial layers and were most likely of mechanical origin.

Reversibility of joint changes produced by immobilization in rabbits

Rabbits knee joints which had been immobilized for only 2 weeks regained motion during the first 2 months of remobilization. Histologically, joint tissues were normal. Only 9 of the 14 rabbits immobilized for 6 weeks regained normal or partial knee motion. Animals that regained knee motion generally did so during the first 4 months of remobilization. There are 2 types of repair of the damaged cartilage; replacement by fibrocartilage and proliferation of chondrocytes. Normal chondrocyte alignment and normal collagen fibril orientation was not restored. Repaired cartilage did not withstand normal joint stress.

What are mathematicians doing?

Let me emphasize the point I have been trying to make. The mathematician's playing with the roots of equations, a play which had no practical motivations and almost no possibilities of practical application, led to the recognition of the importance of symmetry and groups. The study of theory of groups led to mathematical discoveries in geometry and differential equations, and finally to prediction of the existence of a new elementary particle. Surely a surprising outcome for the ivory-tower speculations of an impractical mathematician! Despite my professional bias, I must acknowledge that the importance of symmetry was recognized before mathematicians invented the theory of groups. In 1794 William Blake wrote: Tiger, Tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? However, to the mathematicians must be given the credit of recognizing that, to understand symmetry, you must study the theory of groups. I can now answer my original question, What are mathematicians doing? They are trying to make precise the intuitions of poets.

Histochemical and biochemical analysis of the nonspecific esterases of the small intestine of the rat

With α-naphthyl butyrate and α-naphthyl acetate as substrates nonspecific esterase activity was demonstrated in both the crypt epithelium and epithelium covering the villus of the small intestine of the rat. This distribution of enzymatic activity does not correspond to the distribution of the so-called "absorptive epithelium." Starch gel electrophoretic analysis of intestinal homogenates showed a spectrum of enzymatically active fractions which hydrolyzed both substrates. The number of enzymic fractions and their electrophoretic mobilities were the same with both substrates, but the butyrate ester was hydrolyzed 2.5 times more rapidly than the acetate ester. These observations are discussed in relation to the rapid differentiation which occurs as cells migrate from the intestinal crypts onto the surface of the villus.
