Abstract
In this study, we explored the relationship between the circulating tumor cells (CTC) and the CTC-cancer stem cells (CSC) in the patients with breast cancer. The magnetic-activated cell separation (MACS) method and flow cytometry (FCM) for selection of epithelial cells from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were used to analyze the enriched epithelial cells that were labeled with anti-cytokeratin(CK)-fluorescein isothiocyanate, anti-CD44-phycoerythrin (PE) and anti-CD24-PE, respectively. The CK+ cells were attributed to CTC and the CK+CD44+ CD24-/low cells were thought as to CTC-CSC in 26 breast cancer patients, respectively. Our results showed the CK+ tumor cells were detected in 19 of 26 patients, with the CK+ tumor cells varying from 0.11% to 5.42 %. The CTC-CSC were identified in 18 of the 19 patients with CTC and the percentage of CTC-CSC in CTC was 19.01%. The results yet suggested the breast cancer patients with high-rate CK+ tumor cells were at the advanced tumor node metastases (TNM) stage III, and the patients with low-rate CK+ cells were at the modest TNM stage I. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p<0.001). We concluded that there is a significant relationship between CTC and CTC-CSC, but not among TNM stages, in breast cancer metastasis.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of one alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol (1α-OH D3) on growth performance, tibia quality, and skin and meat color in broilers fed calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient corn-soybean meal diets. A total of 288 male Ross broilers, at 21 days of age, were randomly assigned to three treatments with eight cages per treatment. Three levels of 1α-OH D3 (0, 5, and 10 μg/kg) were added to a basal diet (0.50% Ca, 0.13% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP), and 0.35% total phosphorus (tP)) without vitamin D3. As a result of this study, the addition of 1α-OH D3 increased body weight gain (p<0.001), feed intake (p = 0.007), feed efficiency (p<0.001), tibia weight (p = 0.002), length (p<0.001), breaking-strength (p = 0.012), ash (p<0.001), Ca (p<0.001), and P content (p = 0.004). Dietary 1α-OH D3 enhanced breast meat yellowness (p = 0.015) and the length and weight of the small intestine of the broilers. Moreover, 1α-OH D3 decreased serum Ca concentration (p = 0.074) and breast meat redness (p = 0.010). These results indicate that the 1α-OH D3 improves growth, tibia quality, and meat color in broilers fed Ca- and P-deficient corn-soybean meal diets.

Abstract
By introduction of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid as a second organic ligand, two new divalent metal(II) phosphonates with a 3D framework structure, namely, [Zn(HL1)(bdc)(0.5)] (1) and [Cd(1.5)(HL2)(bdc)(0.5)] (2) (H(2)L1 = H(2)O(3)PCH(NH(2))C(6)H(5), H(3)L2 = H(2)O(3)PCH(2)-NC(5)H(9)-COOH, H(2)bdc = HOOCC(6)H(4)COOH), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The two compounds show three-dimensional (3D) framework structure with infinite two-dimensional (2D) networks pillared by H(2)bdc. For compound 1, the {ZnO(4)} polyhedra are interconnected by phosphonate groups into a 2D layer, and the adjacent layers are further cross-linked via the bdc(2-) anions to generate a three-dimensional framework structure with two types of channel system along the c-axis. A notable feature of compound 1 is the presence of alternate left- and right-handed helical chains in the structure. In compound 2, the inorganic chains, composed of {Cd(1)O(7)}, {Cd(2)O(4)} and {CPO(3)} polyhedra, are linked by HL2(2-) ligands to form a double layer structure in the ab plane, and the adjacent layers are further linked by the bdc(2-) anions to form a 3D framework structure with one-dimensional channel systems along the a-axis. Luminescence properties of compounds 1 and 2 have also been studied.

Abstract
We investigate the electron transport between a scanning tunneling microscope tip and Si(100)-2 × 1 surfaces with four distinct configurations by performing calculations using density functional theory and the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Interestingly, we find that the conducting mechanism is altered when the tip-surface distance varies from large to small. At a distance larger than the critical value of 4.06 Å, the conductance is increased with a reduction in distance owing to the π state arising from the silicon dimers immediately under the tip; this in turn plays a key role in facilitating a large transmission probability. In contrast, when the tip is closer to the substrate, the conductance is substantially decreased because the π state is suppressed by the interaction with the tip, and its contribution in the tunneling channels is considerably reduced.

Abstract
The water quality pollution problem about feculent and anaerobic water aggregation (FAWA) induced by algal bloom in Taihu Lake, which is often called 'hufan' in Chinese, was studied. Its forming process is divided into 3 phases, i. e., material elements forming of FAWA, anaerobic products to be brought to the water surface and the maintaining of FAWA in the water surface. The conventional observational data from Wuxi meteorological station was analyzed. The result shows that there are similar meteorological characteristics of two FAWA phenomena in Taihu Lake in May, 2007 and May, 2008. A numerical simulation was performed to prove the analysis results. It indicates that propitious meteorological condition is one of the necessary forming factors of FAWA, which provides thermal and dynamical environment for FAWA. During the first phase, the weather conditions, such as high air temperature, gentle breeze and nearly invariable wind direction, maintain for more than 3 days and cause algal bloom to aggregate, then die, sink and anaerobic decay near lake bank. All these provide the precondition for FAWA. During the second phase, when the cold air mass passes across the Taihu basin, almost counter-direction wind, which maintains for more than 1 day with higher speed and lower air temperature, makes anaerobic products to be brought to the water surface by uplifted current. This is the trigger mechanism of FAWA. During the last phase, continual high air temperature and gentle breeze is favorable for FAWA in the water surface. Because meteorological factors are predictable, this research provides a way and basis for the further study of warning and controlling approaches of FAWA.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the role of Wnt5a in the process of differentiation of human dental papilla cells (HDPCs). METHODOLOGY Recombinant adenovirus encoding full-length Wnt5a cDNA was constructed to investigate the biological role of Wnt5a on the differentiation of HDPCs. The effect of Wnt5a on HDPCs differentiation was determined by ALP activity assay, ALP staining and mineral induction assay. Mineralization-related gene expressions were assessed by RT-PCR. RESULTS Immunostaining revealed Wnt5a expression in the odontoblast layer and dental papilla tissue. Over-expression of Wnt5a by transfecting HDPCs with an Wnt5a-carrying construct increased ALPase activity and the formation of mineralized nodules of HDPCs. RT-PCR analysis showed that the expressions of mineralization-related genes, such as bone sialoprotein, collagen type I, osteonectin, osteopontin (OCN), dentine matrix protein-1 were up-regulated by Wnt5a. CONCLUSIONS Wnt5a promoted differentiation of HDPCs.

Abstract
A major limiting factor for high productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) in dense planting is light penetration through the canopy. Plant architecture with a narrower leaf angle (LA) and an optimum leaf orientation value (LOV) is desirable to increase light capture for photosynthesis and production per unit area. However, the genetic control of the plant architecture traits remains poorly understood in maize. In this study, QTL for LA, LOV, and related traits were mapped using a set of 229 F(2:3) families derived from the cross between compact and expanded inbred lines, evaluated in three environments. Twenty-five QTL were detected in total. Three of the QTL explained 37.4% and five of the QTL explained 53.9% of the phenotypic variance for LA and LOV, respectively. Two key genome regions controlling leaf angle and leaf orientation were identified. qLA1 and qLOV1 at nearest marker umc2226 on chromosome 1.02 accounted for 20.4 and 23.2% of the phenotypic variance, respectively; qLA5 and qLOV5 at nearest bnlg1287 on chromosome 5 accounted for 9.7 and 9.8% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. These QTL could provide useful information for marker-assisted selection in improving performance of plant architecture with regard to leaf angle and orientation.

Abstract
AIM The development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been recognized to be associated with a combination of pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance. Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) has been recognized as one central mediator in the reaction of inflammation and proapoptotic event in beta-cells. A functional polymorphism at the codon 55 (methionine to valine; A163G) of the small ubiquitin- like modifier-4 (SUMO4) gene may result in higher NF-kappaB activity. This study investigates whether this SUMO4 Met55Val polymorphism also contributes to the development of T2DM. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was performed using genomic DNA samples from 574 Type 2 diabetic patients and 323 healthy controls. The SUMO4 Met55Val polymorphism was genotyped using allele-specific real-time PCR. RESULTS The frequency of the G allele (encoding Val55) was significantly higher in Type 2 diabetic patients and Type 2 diabetic patients with the GG genotype had higher hemoglobin A1c level. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed the genotype of GG and GA was an independent risk factor contributing to the development of T2DM. CONCLUSION This study suggests that in Taiwan the SUMO4 Met 55Val polymorphism is associated with susceptibility to T2DM and Type 2 diabetic patients with GG genotype have worse glycemic control.

Abstract
X-ray tomography is performed to acquire 3D images of crumpled aluminum foils. We develop an algorithm to trace out the labyrinthian paths in the three perpendicular cross sections of the data matrices. The tangent-tangent correlation function along each path is found to decay exponentially with an effective persistence length that shortens as the crumpled ball becomes more compact. In the meantime, we observed ordered domains near the crust, similar to the lamellae phase mixed by the amorphous portion in lyotropic liquid crystals. The size and density of these domains grow with further compaction, and their orientation favors either perpendicular or parallel to the radial direction. Ordering is also identified near the core with an arbitrary orientation, exemplary of the spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Abstract
Three-dimensional x-ray tomography is performed to investigate the internal structure and its evolution of a crumpled aluminum foil ball. The upper and lower bounds of the internal geometric fractal dimension are determined, which increase with the compression. Contrary to the simulation results, we find that the mass distribution changes from being inhomogeneous to uniform. Corroborated with the evidence from previous experiments, these findings support the physical picture that the elastic property precedes the plastic one at dominating the deformation and mechanical response for all crumpled structures. We show that the interior of a crumpled ball at the plastic regime can be mapped to the compact packing of a granular system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to compare two different ways of culturing hair follicle bulge stem cell: The defined keratinocyte-serum free medium (DK-SFM) method and the 3T3 feeder cell method. METHODS The morphological features of cultured bulge stem cells were investigated by inverted phase control microscopy. Immunostaining of stem cell marker cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34) and epithelial cell marker cytokeratin 19 (CK19) were performed to identify the bulge stem cell. The stemness of bulge stem cells was evaluated by colony forming efficiency (CFE) and proportion of CD34 positive cells by flow cytometry. RESULTS Hair follicle bulge stem cells could be successfully cultivated in vitro using two methods. They were both positive for CK19 and CD34. The colony forming efficiency of hair follicle stem cell cultured in DK-SFM and the 3T3 feeder cell was 69.4% and 62.2%, respectively. There was no significant difference in colony forming efficiency between these two methods (P > 0.05), while the CD34 positive cells proportion was higher in DK-SFM as 72.3% than the other as 34.7% (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Two methods are applicable to culture bulge stem cells in vitro. The 3T3 feeder cell method is complicated and can propagate a lot bulge stem cells from hair follicle, while the DK-SFM method is easier to get pure bulge stem cell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the exposure profiles of melamine in children. We evaluated the association of clinical findings, exposure patterns and biomarkers with nephrolithiasis in children with potential exposure to melamine. METHODS A case-control study was conducted in children aged 0-16 years with potential exposure to contaminated dairy products. Cases were defined as nephrolithiasis detected by renal ultrasonography. On the basis of different brands of contaminated dairy products consumed, subjects were classified into high exposure, low exposure and control groups with estimated melamine exposure levels of higher than 2.5 ppm, 0.05-2.5 ppm and lower than detection limits <0.05 ppm. We measured urine melamine for those with nephrolithiasis and age-matched and gender-matched controls within the subset of the study population. RESULTS The duration of consumption of contaminated products was longer in children with nephrolithiasis in the high exposure group than in controls (median (IQR) 12.0 (3.3-24.0) vs 6.0 (4.0-7.0) months; p = 0.048). High melamine exposure levels were significantly associated with nephrolithiasis (OR 61.04 (95% CI 12.73 to 292.84)). The risk was found to increase with estimate melamine exposure levels (p for trend <0.001). Two among 10 affected subjects with nephrolithiasis showed elevated urine melamine levels. In comparison, levels of all 20 controls were lower than the detection limit. CONCLUSIONS The risk of melamine-associated nephrolithiasis was related to duration of consumption of contaminated products and estimated melamine exposure levels. Though urine melamine was not a sensitive test, it might serve as an exposure biomarker in melamine-associated nephrolithiasis.

Abstract
Photoperiod sensitivity is an important consideration in maize cultivation. Flowering time is affected by photoperiod and sensitivity to it limits the potential for successful exchange of germplasm across different latitudes. For resolving the genetic basis of photoperiod sensitivity in maize, a set of 207 recombinant inbred lines derived from a temperate and tropical inbred line cross was evaluated for 2 years in a long-day and short-day environment. Genetic linkage maps were constructed using 237 SSR markers with a total length 1,974.3 cM, and an average space between two makers of 8.33 cM. Twenty-nine QTL were detected for the five measured photoperiod sensitivity traits using composite interval mapping and multiple interval mapping. QTL for flowering time, plant height and leaf number, under long-day conditions, were found clustered on chromosome 10, while QTL for short-day conditions resided on chromosome 3. The QTL in the bin 10.04 region of chromosome 10 were detected associated with photoperiod sensitivity and related traits during long days. These results indicated that this region might contain an important photoperiod sensitivity element.

Chong VH, Wang CL. Higher prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms among patients with rheumatic disorders. Singapore Med J 2008; 49:419-424. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic disorders, such as rheumatic disorders, are associated with increased gastrointestinal (GI) complaints. Medications may be a contributory factor. This study assessed the prevalence of GI symptoms among patients followed-up in a rheumatology clinic. METHODS Enquiries about GI, psychological and psychosomatic symptoms (headache, insomnia, anxiety, backache and depression) were made from patients. Non-related visitors served as the control group. The underlying disorders were rheumatoid arthritis (RA, 37 percent), systemic lupus erythromatosus (SLE, 23 percent) and others (40 percent). RESULTS The symptom prevalence of the following complaints were: reduced appetite (10.2 percent), nausea (20.2 percent), vomiting (10.7 percent), dysphagia (7.3 percent), odynophagia (5.1 percent), early satiety (27.5 percent), heartburn (15.2 percent), dyspepsia (44.6 percent), abdominal bloating (20.8 percent) and irregular bowel habit (6.7 percent). There were no differences between the various rheumatic disorders (RA/SLE and RA/others) except for more heartburn in SLE compared to others (p-value is less than 0.05). There was no significant difference between nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) users and non-users. Patients on medications with GI (disease modifying/steroid/NSAIDs) adverse effects, experienced a higher rate of early satiety (odds-ratio [OR] 3.5, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] 1.4-8.9) and dyspepsia (OR 2.1, 95 percent CI 1.2-4.3). Compared to the control group, patients had more GI symptoms (all p-values are less than 0.05) except for irregular bowel habits. Patients also experienced more anxiety (OR 2.1, 95 percent CI 1.1-2.4) and backache (OR 2.6, 95 percent CI 1.6-4.2), and had significantly higher symptom clustering (more than two symptoms) compared to the controls (p-value is less than 0.001). CONCLUSION GI symptoms are common among patients with rheumatic disorders. Medications alone do not account for the high prevalence, suggesting that the underlying conditions predispose to GI symptoms.

Abstract
The fabrication of gold Fresnel zone plates, by a combination of e-beam lithography and electrodeposition, with a 30 nm outermost zone width and a 450 nm-thick structure is described. The e-beam lithography process was implemented with a careful evaluation of applied dosage, tests of different bake-out temperatures and durations for the photoresist, and the use of a developer without methylisobutylketone. Electrodeposition with a pulsed current mode and with a specially designed apparatus produced the desired high-aspect-ratio nanostructures. The fabricated zone plates were examined by electron microscopy and their performances were assessed using a transmission X-ray microscope. The results specifically demonstrated an image resolution of 40 nm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to analyze the effects of three sterilization methods (dry heat sterilization, steam sterilization, chemical sterilization) on the corrosion of dental fissure burs. METHODS 100 dental fissure burs were distributed to 10 groups. One was control, the burs in the other 9 groups were treated by dry heat sterilization, steam sterilization, chemical sterilization with 5, 10, 15 cycles respectively. Weight method, scanning electron microscope, micro-hardness measurement were used to analyze the corrosion of dental fissure burs. RESULTS The fissure burs gained their weight with cycles of sterilization. 5, 10, 15 cycles of dry heat sterilization, 10, 15 cycles of steam sterilization and 15 cycles of chemical sterilization, the weight of fissure burs were significantly increased (P < 0.05). Scanning electron microscope showed differences on the surfaces of dental fissure burs among the three sterilization groups. After sterilization, spot or partial erosion were seen on the surface of the burs. The steam sterilization groups showed the most evident changes, followed by chemical sterilization groups and dry heat sterilization groups. X-ray energy spectrometer showed the steam sterilization groups had the largest percentage of W, followed by dry heat sterilization groups, chemical sterilization groups and control group. Fe had the opposite trends. Micro-hardness reduced after sterilization. The reduction was most clear in steam sterilization group, followed by chemical sterilization and dry heat sterilization ( P< 0.05). The difference between 5 and 10 times of steam sterilization and 5, 10, 15 times of chemical sterilization were significant difference (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between 5, 10, 15 times of dry heat sterilization (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The corrosion is most severe in steamsterilization group, followed by chemical sterilization, dry heat sterilization. Dry heat sterilization shows less corrosion.
