Abstract
A detailed analysis of the effect of short-range and tensor correlations on one- and two-nucleon momentum distributions of medium-weight nuclei (12<or=A<or=40) is carried out. Although our Letter is primarily aimed at understanding the role of the tensor force on nucleon momentum distributions of medium-weight nuclei, the possible relevance of our results for the interpretation of (e, e'N) and (e, e'2N) processes at high Q2, aimed at investigating nucleon-nucleon correlations, is discussed.

Abstract
AIMS The evaluation of the effects of Enterococcus hirae, an intestinal bacterium in the adjacent mucosa (mucosal bacterium), on tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced barrier impairment in human epithelial Caco-2 cells. METHODS AND RESULTS The filter-grown Caco-2 monolayers were used as an intestinal epithelial model system. In Caco-2 cells, heat-killed E. hirae ATCC 9790(T) suppressed the TNF-alpha-induced barrier impairment and increase in interleukin-8 (IL-8) secretion, but lipase- and mutanolysin-treated E. hirae ATCC 9790(T) did not have these effects. It was demonstrated that lipoteichoic acid (LTA) from E. hirae ATCC 9790(T) is responsible for Caco-2 cells' recovery from TNF-alpha-induced impairments. In addition, Caco-2 cells had the same response to Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) ligand, Pam(3)Cys-Ser-(Lys)(4) as they did to LTA. Increased expression of zonula occludens-1 was observed by the addition of E. hirae ATCC 9790(T) to TNF-alpha-treated Caco-2 cells, and decreased expression of myosin light chain kinase was observed by the addition of LTA and Pam(3)Cys-Ser-(Lys)(4); this, in turn, led to barrier enforcement. CONCLUSIONS Enterococcus hirae ATCC 9790(T) cell wall fractions, such as LTA, protect against intestinal impairment by regulation of epithelial tight junction via TLR2 signalling. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Enterococcus hirae could be useful in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, as well as other intestinal disorders.

Abstract
AIMS To identify Lactococcus garvieae isolates from radish and broccoli sprouts and compare them with virulent and less virulent mutant strains obtained from yellowtails with regard to KG phenotype, presence of a capsule and virulence towards yellowtails and mice. METHODS AND RESULTS Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of six isolates obtained from radish and broccoli sprouts indicated that they were L. garvieae (similarity >99%). They were compared with KG9502, Lg2 and ATCC49156 strains obtained from yellowtails. A less virulent mutant strain Lg2-S was obtained by Lg2 subculture. Biochemical characterization of the six strains resembled that of KG9502, Lg2, ATCC49156 and Lg2-S, except for saccharose and tagatose acidification and the presence of hippuricase. These six strains were nonpathogenic towards yellowtails and mice, nonsusceptible to bacteriophages and demonstrated heterogeneity on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis. Using transmission electron microscopy, a capsule was observed in KG9502 and Lg2 but not in ATCC49156 and Lg2-S. CONCLUSIONS We isolated L. garvieae strains that lacked pathogenicity towards yellowtails and mice from radish and broccoli sprouts; these were noncapsulated and exhibited KG(+) phenotype. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first documentation of L. garvieae isolated from terrestrial plants. These isolates exhibited genetic diversity; however, they were noncapsulated and nonpathogenic towards yellowtails and mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although it is well-known that the restriction of protein intake in chronic renal failure (CRF) is effective in slowing the progressive loss of renal function, recent randomized controlled trials have not consistently shown a beneficial effect on CRF. There is controversy regarding the amount of protein intake that results in this effect. In this study, various amounts of protein intake were compared in CRF patients due to chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN) in order to explore effective restriction of dietary protein. METHODS CGN patients (121 in total) with a serum creatinine level of 6 mg/dl were studied. They were subdivided into six groups depending on their protein intake: 0.3 g/kg BW/day (0.3 g), 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and > or =0.8 g (control group C). Deterioration of renal function was evaluated by the mean rate of decline in creatinine clearance, and the amount of protein intake was estimated on the basis of the urea nitrogen appearance rate in a 24-hour urine sample. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the suppression of the progression of renal dysfunction in the 0.6- and 0.7-g groups. However, significant suppression was observed in the 0.5-, 0.4-, and 0.3-g groups in comparison with those that received more than 0.6 g (p < 0.05). The renal survival rate in the groups that received less than 0.5 g was higher than that in the groups that received more than 0.6 g (p < 0.05). Malnutrition was not observed in all patients studied. CONCLUSION We found that a protein intake of more than 0.5 g/kg BW/day is not effective in suppressing further deterioration of renal function in CRF resulting from CGN.

Abstract
AIMS To clarify the epidemiological relationship between Lactococcus garvieae isolates from the Seriola in Japan and isolates from other animals. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 32 isolates obtained from aquatic (the genus Seriola and trout) and terrestrial animals (cow, pig, cat, dog and horse) was used to evaluate its pathogenicity to yellowtail and mouse, phenotype (KG+ and KG-), its susceptibility to three bacteriophages and the pattern of pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Lactococcus garvieae isolated from Seriola showed strong pathogenicity to yellowtail, while isolates from trout showed weak pathogenicity and those obtained from terrestrial animals showed no distinct pathogenicity. Only, the isolates from the genus Seriola in Japan showed susceptibility to the bacteriophages. The results of PFGE pattern indicate that the isolates obtained from the Seriola predict homogeneity, while there is no similarity among the isolates obtained from different animals. CONCLUSION This experiment indicates that L. garvieae isolated from Seriola in Japan appears to be very different from the isolates obtained from other animals, and the isolates prevalent among the genus Seriola in Japan might be homogeneous. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study suggests that a particular genetic group that has specially adapted and acquired virulence toward yellowtail were prevalent among the genus Seriola in Japan.

Abstract
AIM Biocompatibility profiles of synthetic membranes may vary. In this prospective crossover study, we examined the effect of various membranes on cutaneous microcirculation during HD. SUBJECTS AND METHODS 11 HD patients without cardiovascular complications were enrolled in this study. They were dialyzed using three types of membrane in a randomized order: ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL), vitamin E-bonded cellulose (VE-C) and polysulfone (PS). The transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2) was examined on the dorsum of foot to assess the cutaneous microcirculation. Serum biochemical parameters were also measured. RESULTS The TcPO2 as a percentage of the predialysis level decreased from the beginning of HD, and significant differences were observed after 15 min of HD between EVAL and the other 2 membranes (98 +/- 6% (mean +/- SD) for EVAL versus 89 +/- 7% for VE-C (p < 0.01) and 88 +/- 10% for PS (p < 0.01)). Furthermore, there were significant differences at 30 and 60 min between EVAL and PS (30 min: 93 +/- 9% for EVAL versus 85 +/- 7% for PS (p < 0.05); 60 min: 92 +/- 10% for EVAL versus 79 +/- 10% for PS (p < 0.01)). The serum level of thiobarbituric acid reactants (TBARs), a marker of lipid peroxidation, increased significantly at the end of HD relative to that at the beginning of HD when using a PS membrane (from 1.9 +/- 0.5 to 2.1 +/- 0.5 nmol/ml, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our results indicate that an EVAL membrane is superior to PS and VE-C membranes in terms of its smaller influence on cutaneous microcirculation. The repeated occurrence of microcirculatory disturbance during HD sessions may cause chronic endothelial dysfunction and even cardiovascular complications in HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Continuous oral administration of live Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (L. GG) to pregnant subjects with atopic dermatitis and their children, suppressed the frequency of atopic dermatitis. The details of mechanisms and immune systems involved in this suppressive effect, however, remain speculative. OBJECTIVE We sought to clarify suppressive mechanisms of L. GG on atopic dermatitis by using NC/Nga mice, a model of human atopic dermatitis. METHODS Maternal mice and infant mice were fed with food containing or not containing heat-treated L. GG during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and after weaning. RESULTS Control NC/Nga mice raised under an air-uncontrolled condition spontaneously manifested typical skin lesions very similar to those in patients with atopic dermatitis. On the other hand, administration of food containing heat-treated L. GG inhibited the onset and development of atopic skin lesions, accompanied by smaller numbers of mast cells and eosinophils in the affected skin sites. Mice fed with L. GG showed a significant increase in plasma IL-10 levels compared with control mice, while there was no significant difference in the proportion of splenic CD4(+)CD25(+) regulatory T cells between mice fed with L. GG and control mice. The IL-10 mRNA expression was enhanced in both Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes in mice fed with L. GG. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that some components of heat-treated L. GG may have an ability to delay the onset and suppress the development of atopic dermatitis, probably through a strong induction of IL-10 in intestinal lymphoid organs and systemic levels.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical analyses on local distributions of serum proteins in living mouse kidneys are usually difficult to examine with conventional preparation methods. By using our "in vivo cryotechnique" combined with freeze-substitution, we have checked immunolocalizations of the serum proteins in nephrons of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-overload mice, and compared them with those obtained by the conventional preparation methods. In two days of daily BSA-injected mice, the immunolocalization of BSA could be observed in Bowman's space and urinary tubules with their overt proteinuria, where another endogenous mouse albumin was similarly immunolocalized. The leakage of BSA and mouse albumin in Bowman's space and their reabsorption into proximal tubules were detected in 55% of nephrons, where no leakage of immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) was detected. However, the leakage of IgG1, in addition to BSA and mouse albumin, was detected in the other nephrons. By carefully examining immunolocalizations of BSA and IgG1, they were obviously different from those obtained by the conventional preparation methods without normal blood circulation into the kidneys. The immunolocalizations of both BSA and mouse serum proteins could be directly analyzed with the "in vivo cryotechnique", suggesting that functional damage to glomerular filtration barriers are different at early stages of the BSA-overload mouse model, depending on each nephron of living mice.

Abstract
We examined the effects of chronic salt loading on the hypothalamic expressions of the enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP), arginine vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT) genes in AVP-eGFP transgenic rats that expressed eGFP in the hypothalamic AVP-containing neurones. In these rats, salt loading for 5 days caused a marked increase of the eGFP fluorescence in the magnocellular divisions of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and the internal layer of the median eminence. Expression of the eGFP gene was increased seven- to eight-fold in the PVN and SON of salt-loaded rats in comparison with euhydrated rats. By contrast, none of these changes were observed in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The expression of the AVP and OXT genes was increased 1.5- to two-fold in the PVN and SON of salt-loaded nontransgenic (control) and transgenic rats. There were no differences in the expression levels of the AVP and OXT genes in the PVN and SON between nontransgenic (control) and transgenic animals under normal conditions and after salt loading. In the posterior pituitary gland, the intensity of the eGFP fluorescence did not change after salt loading for 5 days, but increased after 10 days of salt loading. Upon salt loading, significant increases in the plasma AVP concentrations, plasma osmolality and plasma Na+ were observed. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in changes of water intake, food intake, urine volume, urine osmolality, urine Na+ concentrations, and the body weights in both models under normal or salt-loaded conditions. Our results show that the response of the AVP-eGFP fusion gene to chronic salt loading is exaggerated, and humoral responses such as AVP and OXT and the body fluid homeostasis are maintained in AVP-eGFP transgenic rats. The AVP-eGFP transgenic rat gives us a new opportunity to study the dynamics of the AVP system in vivo.

Abstract
Two terrorist attacks with the nerve agent Sarin affected citizens in Matsumoto and Tokyo, Japan in 1994 and 1995, killing 19 and injuring more the 6000. Sarin, a very potent organophosphate nerve agent, inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity within the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. Acute and long-term Sarin effects upon humans were well documented in these two events. Sarin gas inhalation caused instantaneous death by respiratory arrest in 4 victims in Matsumoto. In Tokyo, two died in station yards and another ten victims died in hospitals within a few hours to 3 months after poisoning. Six victims with serum ChE below 20% of the lowest normal were resuscitated from cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) or coma with generalized convulsion. Five recovered completely and one remained in vegetative state due to anoxic brain damage. EEG abnormalities persisted for up to 5 years. Miosis and copious secretions from the respiratory and GI tracts (muscarinic effects) were common in severely to slightly affected victims. Weakness and twitches of muscles (nicotinic effects) appeared in severely affected victims. Neuropathy and ataxia were observed in small number (less than 10%) of victims, which findings disappeared between 3 days and 3 months. Leukocytosis and high serum CK levels were common. Hyperglycemia, ketonuria, low serum triglyceride, hypopotassemia were observed in severely affected victims, which abnormalities were attributed to damage of the adrenal medulla. Oximes, atropine sulphate, diazepam and ample intravenous infusion were effective treatments. Pralidoxime iodide IV reversed cholinesterase and symptoms quickly even if administered 6 h after exposure. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was less than 8% after 5 years. However, psychological symptoms continue in victims of both incidents. In summary, both potent toxicity and quick recovery from critical ill conditions were prominent features. Conventional therapies proved effective in Sarin incidents in Japan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the modulation of non-reciprocal group I (Ib) inhibition during tonic contraction of antagonist muscles in patients with spasticity vs normal subjects. METHODS The authors studied 10 patients with spastic paraplegia due to cervical compression myelopathy and 16 age-matched normal subjects. Ib inhibition to soleus motoneurons was recorded as the change in size of the H-reflex of the soleus, evoked by conditioning stimulus to the nerve innervating the medial gastrocnemius muscle. The extent of inhibition was studied at rest and during tonic contraction of the pretibial muscles of variable strength. RESULTS In the resting state, the extent of inhibition in the patients did not differ from normal controls. During antagonist contraction, the extent of inhibition increased both in the normal subjects and patients. The increment was smaller in the patients, especially in those with severe spastic gait. The smaller increment in the inhibition was correlated with the time required to walk 10 m in the patients. CONCLUSION The authors observed a lack of modulation of Ib inhibition during tonic antagonist contraction in patients with spasticity, especially those with gait disturbance. Disturbed central modulation of non-reciprocal (Ib) interneurons may be responsible for spasticity.

Abstract
14053 Background: Highly specific antibody against recombinant human dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) has been developed to assess immunohistochemically DPD expression in tumors. A new oral DPD inhibitory fluoropyrimidine (DIF), S-1, is reportedly effective against gastric scirrhous cancer. Objective of this study was to assess intra-tumoral levels of DPD immunohistochemically using highly specific anti-DPD polyclonal antibodies, and investigated the relationship between the immunoreactivity of DPD and the anti-tumor effects of S-1 as a DIF in gastric scirrhous cancer patients. Methods: The relationship between immunoreactivity to DPD in biopsy specimens and the effects of chemotherapy was investigated in 61 patients treated with first-line fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy (S-1:DIF, 5-FU:non-DIF) for gastric scirrhous cancer. Immunohistochemical staining intensity was semiquantitatively graded (− to 3+) on the basis of the proportion of positively stained cancer cells in the lesions. Results: Total 61 gastric scirrhous cancer patients (M/F: 34/27) were analyzed to date with a median age of 56 (range 30–73). Response rate (partial response) was significantly higher in patients with DPD positive tumors than in those with negative in S-1 group (45.5%, 10.0% : p<0.05), as compared with in 5-FU group (0%, 5.6%: p=0.398). According to median survival time, there was no significant difference between patients with DPD positive tumors (364 days) and those with negative (406 days; p=0.626) in S-1 group or in 5-FU group (181 days and 256 days, respectively; p=0.543). Conclusions: This study indicates that S-1 is effective even in gastric scirrhous cancer with the high level of DPD activity. Further immunohistochemical studies using DIF-based regimens are needed to confirm these results with larger numbers of patients. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
We propose a simple mechanical model describing viscoelasticity and cavitation during the debonding process in pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA). Our calculation qualitatively reproduces typical stress-strain curves in the probe-tack test, such as the steep stress maxima and the following plateau region. It is shown that in the thin-film geometry the stress-strain curve is essentially determined by the cavities created by the large negative pressure. Effects of pre-existent air bubbles due to surface roughness are also discussed.

Abstract
Rodent models have been used for many years to probe the actions of relaxin. Identification of the orthologs of human leucine-rich repeat-containing g-protein-coupled receptor 7 (LGR7), the relaxin receptor, in mouse and rat will enable characterization of the response of LGR7 to relaxin in these species. Partial LGR7 homologous sequences from mouse and rat were discovered in the Celera and NCBI gene databases, amplified, cloned, and sequenced. At the protein level, mouse and rat LGR7 are 85.2% and 85.7% identical to human LGR7. Mouse and rat LGR7 were able to bind to and be activated by relaxin ligands.

Abstract
1. Relaxin is an extracellular matrix (ECM)-remodelling hormone that is functionally important in reproductive tissues, brain, lung and heart. 2. Recently, the human relaxin receptor was identified as leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 7 (LGR7). 3. Using human LGR7 as a template, we identified mouse and rat LGR7 orthologues in the Celera and National Centre for Biotechnology Information databases. 4. At the protein level, mouse and rat LGR7 share 85.2 and 85.7% identity with human LGR7, respectively. 5. Mouse LGR7 mRNA was detected in all tissues where relaxin binding is observed. 6. Mouse and rat LGR7 bound [33P]-relaxin with high affinity and, upon relaxin treatment, both receptors stimulated cAMP production in transfected HEK 293T cells. 7. These results indicate that mouse and rat LGR7 are the relaxin receptors in these species. 8. The actions of relaxin in rodents are well characterized, providing an established platform for research into the molecular pharmacology of the highly conserved relaxin receptor.

Abstract
A case of consumptive coagulopathy in a 30-year-old pregnant woman with degenerated uterine leiomyoma is described. She developed lower abdominal pain at 21 weeks of gestation. Laboratory profiles revealed coagulation abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging diagnosed degenerated uterine leiomyoma. At 34 weeks, she underwent cesarean section and myomectomy. Pathological examination showed the presence of organized thrombi in the vessels of leiomyoma. The consumption of platelets and coagulation factors in degenerated uterine leiomyoma may result in consumptive coagulopathy.

Abstract
A case of a 30-year-old primiparous woman with pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis is described. The patient had experienced six episodes of spontaneous pneumothorax at the age of 27 years and had been diagnosed as having pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis based on histological findings of specimens obtained by transbronchial biopsy. She had undertaken open lung surgery and thoracoscopy. Thereafter, she became pregnant spontaneously. Her antenatal course was uneventful with no exacerbation of respiratory status. At 38 weeks of gestation, she underwent a selective cesarean section and myomectomy under combined spinal and epidural anesthesia. Her postoperative course was uneventful. No remarkable changes in computed tomographic findings of the lung were noted on the 20th day of postoperation compared with those before pregnancy. She has been followed-up in the pulmonary outpatient clinic with no deterioration of the disease.
