Abstract
Although rare, anaphylactic reactions induced by proton pump inhibitors have been reported. The presence of cross-reactivity between different members of the group is not clear. We studied 9 patients with adverse reactions to omeprazole. Clinical symptoms appeared immediately in 8 patients and after 4 hours in 1. Symptoms ranged from urticaria/angioedema in 7 cases to anaphylaxis in 2 cases. Skin prick tests and oral controlled challenge tests with omeprazole, lansoprazole, and pantoprazole were performed. Skin prick or intradermal tests with omeprazole were positive in 8 patients. Four were also positive to pantoprazole. Prick tests with lansoprazole were always negative. Lansoprazole was administered to all 9 patients, with good tolerance in 8. Only 3 patients were challenged with pantoprazole and developed widespread urticaria. We present 9 patients with immunoglobulin E-mediated allergy to omeprazole. In most of our cases, lansoprazole proved to be a good alternative treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the indices computed by a bispectral (BIS) monitor and an auditory evoked potential (AEP) monitor during maintenance of anesthesia in pediatric patients. A secondary objective was to compare anesthetic consumption and recovery times. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients aged 6 months to 12 years under inhaled anesthesia with sevoflurane were administered a penile or caudal nerve block. BIS and AEP monitoring was then started. The patients were randomized to 3 groups in which the sevoflurane dosage was guided by the BIS index, the A-line ARX index (AAI), or standard procedures (control group). The BIS index, the AAI, the fraction of expired sevoflurane, hemodynamic parameters, and recovery time were the variables recorded for all patients. RESULTS Thirty-five patients were enrolled. Significant differences between the 2 monitor groups were observed. The mean (SD) AAI was lower in patients whose dosage was controlled by the BIS index (19 [2]) than in those whose dosage was based on the AEP monitor's reading (22 [4]) (P=.04). According to a Bland and Altman plot, there was good agreement between the BIS index and the AAI except for the highest and, in particular, the lowest values. The volumes of sevoflurane used and the recovery times were similar between groups. There was a positive correlation between the 2 indices (Pearson correlation coefficient, 0.207; P<.001). CONCLUSIONS BIS monitoring provided a more stable index than did AEP monitoring and BIS-index guidance achieved a deeper level of hypnosis. There was good correlation between the 2 indices during maintenance of anesthesia. Neither monitor offered advantages over standard procedures with regard to movement, volume of anesthetic consumed, or recovery time.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study refractive errors in children with relatively serious congenital myogenic ptosis and to carry out a comparative study in relation to control children in our population. METHODS We included 35 children with simple congenital myogenic ptosis, 27 of them had minor ptosis, 3 moderate ptosis and 5 serious ptosis. Thirty-five children were also in the control group. One eye of every subject was included, the worst eye in subjects of the ptosis group and an eye selected at random in control group subjects. A comparative study of refractive data in every group was carried out, using the Student's t-test, ANOVA and Chi square or Yates correction tests. RESULTS We obtained significant differences between children with ptosis and controls in average spherical equivalent (3.08/1.49), in average absolute sphere (2.80/1.42) and in average absolute cylinder (0.81/0.31) (p<0.05). We also observed a relation between the presence of astigmatism and the seriousness of ptosis (chi2=6.88>5.99), and between the need for optical correction and the presence of ptosis (chi2=15.92>3.84). CONCLUSIONS Children with simple congenital myogenic ptosis in our enviroment have greater refractive errors than control children. Ptosis children require optical correction more frequently than control. The more serious the ptosis, the more likelihood there is of having astigmatism.

Abstract
This work shows the application of a rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) in the removal of Cu(II) content from an effluent generated by a plastics chromium-plating industry, on the laboratory scale; in particular, it deals with rinse water from the electrolytic copper process. This process was designed to convert cupric ions in solution to metal powder. The generation of metal powders in the RCE was achieved at Reynolds numbers between 52925 and 83183 and limiting current densities (J(L)) in the range of 17 to 25 mA cm(-2). The removal of Cu(II) (initially 922 ppm) reached 43 ppm in 10 minutes of electrolysis for Re = 83183 and J = 25 mA cm(-2), with a space-time yield of 88 mg Cu(II) L(-1) min(-1), 95% current efficiency, and energy consumption of 5.3 KWh m(-3). The electrochemical treatment applied to waste rinse water at the RCE allows this treated water to be recycled back to the same rinsing process, avoiding additional consumption and discharge of this liquid.

Abstract
The aim of this work is to describe the diversity and phylogeny of rhizobial bacteria associated to nodules of Ononis tridentata L. in different geographical regions of Spain. Twenty-two bacterial isolates were characterized using several molecular techniques (16S amplified ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid restriction analysis, fingerprinting, and sequencing) and phylogenies were inferred from their 16S and nodC gene sequences. Phylogenetically, the isolates grouped with the genera Rhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Phylobacterium, and Bosea. The nodC gene, essential for nodulation, was detected for the first time in isolates close to the genera Bosea and Phyllobacterium. The bacteria isolated showed a high diversity at the genus, species, and strain level regardless of the geographical origin of the host plant. This is the first report describing bacteria associated to nodules of O. tridentata. This shrub legume is highly prized for the revegetation of gypsum soils in semiarid Mediterranean areas. Our molecular description of bacteria associated to this legume improves the current understanding of the ecology of this plant species. Our findings have implications for formulating suitable bacterial inocula to recover gypsum ecosystems.

Abstract
In this work, recent theoretical investigations by the authors in the area of oxide multilayers are briefly reviewed. The calculations were carried out using model Hamiltonians and a variety of non-perturbative techniques. Moreover, new results are also included here. They correspond to the generation of a metallic state by mixing insulators in a multilayer geometry, using the Hubbard and double-exchange models. For the latter, the resulting metallic state is also ferromagnetic. This illustrates how electron or hole doping via transfer of charge in multilayers can lead to the study of phase diagrams of transition metal oxides in the clean limit. Currently, these phase diagrams are much affected by the disordering standard chemical doping procedure, which introduces quenched disorder in the material.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transsexual persons afford a very suitable model to study the effect of sex steroids on uric acid metabolism. DESIGN This was a prospective study to evaluate the uric acid levels and fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) in a cohort of 69 healthy transsexual persons, 22 male-to-female transsexuals (MFTs) and 47 female-to-male transsexuals (FMTs). The subjects were studied at baseline and 1 and 2 yr after starting cross-sex hormone treatment. RESULTS The baseline levels of uric acid were higher in the MFT group. Compared with baseline, uric acid levels had fallen significantly after 1 yr of hormone therapy in the MFT group and had risen significantly in the FMT group. The baseline FEUA was greater in the FMT group. After 2 yr of cross-sex hormone therapy, the FEUA had increased in MFTs (P = 0.001) and fallen in FMTs (P = 0.004). In MFTs, the levels of uric acid at 2 yr were lower in those who had received higher doses of estrogens (P = 0.03), and the FEUA was higher (P = 0.04). The FEUA at 2 yr was associated with both the estrogen dose (P = 0.02) and the serum levels of estradiol-17beta (P =0.03). In MFTs, a correlation was found after 2 yr of therapy between the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and the serum uric acid (r = 0.59; P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Serum levels of uric acid and the FEUA are altered in transsexuals as a result of cross-sex hormone therapy. The results concerning the MFT group support the hypothesis that the lower levels of uric acid in women are due to estrogen-induced increases in FEUA.

Abstract
We study the real-time dynamics of a hole and doubly occupied site pair, namely, a holon and a doublon, in a 1D Hubbard insulator with on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Our analysis shows that the pair is long-lived and the expected decay mechanism to underlying spin excitations is actually inefficient. For a nonzero intersite Coulomb repulsion, we observe that part of the wave function remains in a bound state. Our study also provides insight on the holon-doublon propagation in real space. Because of the one-dimensional nature of the problem, these particles move in opposite directions even in the absence of an applied electric field. The potential relevance of our results to solar cell applications is discussed.

Abstract
This work shows results obtained in the electrochemical incineration of a synthetic vinasse with initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 75.096 g L(-1) in aqueous media (which resembles vinasse industrial wastewater). Electrolyses in a filter-press-type FM01-LC electrochemical reactor equipped with a three-dimensional (3D) boron doped diamond electrode (BDD) were performed at Reynolds values between 22 <or= Re <or= 109, and a fixed current density of 10 mA cm(-2). The electrochemical incineration achieved up to 97% in vinasse mineralization with current efficiencies that surpass unity and energy consumption of 168 KW-h m(-3), at Re =109. The mineralization of vinasse indicates that such degradation occurs via hydroxyl radicals formed by the oxidation of water on the BDD surface. Experimental data revealed that hydrodynamic conditions slightly influence the vinasse degradation rate and current efficiency, indicating that the oxidation involves a complex pathway.

Abstract
The humic model compound, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), was characterized and measured in microbial cultures by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Under the experimental conditions, the formal reduction potential (E(o')) of the couple AQDS/AHQDS was found to be of -0.520 V vs. SCE (standard calomel electrode) at pH value of 7.0. Control experiments showed that there were no interferences of the culture medium or the microbial consortium on the quantitative determination of the quinone. The linear equation E(o') = -0.294 - 0.032 pH was found, showing that the pH used (7.0-7.8) did not affect significantly the AQDS determination by CV and AHQDS was the predominant hydroquinone formed. A calibration curve was obtained by plotting current response versus AQDS concentration with a linear correlation (r = 0.999) from 0.2 to 10 mM of AQDS. This technique was applied in a denitrifying culture to establish kinetic profiles for AHQDS formation coupled to acetate and p-cresol oxidation. CV results showed that organic matter oxidation by the denitrifying sludge was stoichiometrically associated to AQDS reduction into AHQDS-. CV was shown to be a useful tool for monitoring oxidation/reduction processes of quinones occurring in complex microbial media.

Abstract
Pulmonary nodules are a common finding in routine chest studies. Although there are no pathognomic clinical or radiological signs that enable the exact nature of a pulmonary nodule to be determined, the clinical context and the appropriate characterization of the pulmonary nodule make it possible to reach the correct diagnosis in most cases. This article discusses the most important aspects involved in the use of multislice computed tomography in the noninvasive detection and characterization of pulmonary nodules.

Abstract
A PCR method based on the nucleotide sequence variation in the 12S ribosomal RNA, mitochondrial gene has been developed for the specific and qualitative detection and identification of cat, dog, and rat or mouse tissue in food and feedstuffs. The primers designed generated specific fragments of 108, 101, and 96 bp in length for cat, dog, and rat or mouse tissues, respectively. Specificity of the primers was tested against 32 nontarget species including mammals, birds, fish, and plant species. This PCR method allowed detection of raw and heated cat, dog, and rat or mouse tissues in meat/oats mixtures even when the concentration of the target species was reduced to 0.1%. Furthermore, the performance of the method was not affected by prolonged heat-treatment (up to 133 degrees C for 20 min at 300 kPa), and consequently, it could be very useful to verify the origin of raw materials in food and feedstuffs submitted to denaturing technologies, for which other methods cannot be applied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to test whether different sampling strategies would influence the microbiologic outcomes by assessing the bacterial load and composition of the subgingival microbiota by means of anaerobic culturing before and after periodontal treatment. METHODS The first study (1 versus 4 [1vs4]) included 33 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis. Two sampling strategies were compared, sampling one site from the deepest pocket in the mouth (M1) versus a pooled sample of four sites from the deepest pockets in each quadrant (M4). The second study (2 versus 4 [2vs4]) included 20 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis. The strategy M4 was compared to a pooled sample of two non-adjacent sites in the same quadrant (M2). All samples were processed identically by means of anaerobic culturing. In both studies, a pretreatment sampling was taken. However, in the second study (2vs4), subgingival samples were also taken at 1, 3, and 6 months after periodontal therapy. Quantitative data were compared between strategies by means of t test and signed-rank test; qualitative data were compared by means of 2 x 2 contingency tables. RESULTS Pretreatment samples showed that total anaerobic counts were significantly higher for M4 compared to M1 (P <0.001) and M2 (P = 0.025). However, there were no significant differences in regard to percentage of microbiota and counts for each pathogen. Most of the qualitative differences between strategies were caused by false negatives in M1 and M2. Post-treatment samples showed a reduction in total counts and a limited impact in the frequency of detection of periodontal pathogens. M2 detected a significant decrease in the frequency of detection of Porphyromonas gingivalis, which was not confirmed by the M4 strategy. CONCLUSION The criteria of selection and the number of sites selected when sampling the subgingival biofilm in patients with generalized chronic periodontitis may influence the detection and quantitation of periodontal pathogens when evaluated by culture especially after treatment.

Abstract
PCR method was applied for the qualitative identification of chicken (Gallus gallus), turkey (Meleagris gallipavo), duck (Anas platyrhynchos x Cairina muschata), and goose (Anser anser) tissues in feed-stuffs, on an individual basis. The assay uses oligonucleotide primers that are specific for each avian species, targeting the 12S rRNA mitochondrial gene. The primers designed generated amplicons of 95, 122, 64, and 98 bp length for chicken, turkey, duck, and goose, respectively. The specificity of the primers was tested against 29 animal species including mammals, birds, and fish, as well as 8 plant species. Analysis of experimental feedstuffs demonstrated the detection of each target species in the range of 0.1 to 100%. The performance of this method was not affected by prolonged heat-treatment (up to 133 degrees C for 20 min at 300 kPa), and consequently, it could be very useful for the accurate identification of tissues from these 4 avian species in products submitted to denaturing technologies, for which other methods cannot be applied.
