Abstract
The qualitative analysis of the 6 isomeric dimethylamphetamines (both methyl groups on the aromatic ring) is described. Their ultraviolet, mass, and proton magnetic resonance spectra are similar, but infrared spectra allow a positive identification to be made, and reference spectra are provided. Melting point and gas-liquid and thin layer chromatographic data are also presented.

Abstract
Liver microsomal enzyme activities and glutathione (GSH) contents of fasted male rats pretreated with phenobarbital (PBT) or vehicle controls were measured during and after exposure to trichloroethylene (TRI) (1% x 2 hr). TRI caused morphologic liver injury only in the pbt animals. Cytochrome P-450 and b5 contents were diminished by the end of the first hr of TRI exposure and NADH-cytochrome c reduction increased three-fold by eight hr in the PBT animals. The only change in vehicle animals exposed to TRI was a decrease in NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activity by eight hr. Hepatic GSH contents of vehicle animals, constant during TRI exposure, rose with time. In contrast, in PBT animals, hepatic GSH contents decreased during TRI exposure and then rebounded. Decreases in GSH were most profound in the microsomal fraction. When fed animals with approximately two-fold higher hepatic GSH levels than fasted animals were exposed to TRI, they had shorter anesthesia recovery times and less liver injury, although excreting similar or slightly more trichlorinated metabolite into their urine in 24 hr than their fasted counterparts. We suggest that the hepatoxic effects of trichloroethylene are caused by inadequate detoxification of its reactive intermediates.

Abstract
The qualitative analysis of the aromatic bromination products of the 6 isomeric dimethoxyamphetamines and their hydrochloride or hydrobromide salts is described. Their ultraviolet, mass, and proton magnetic resonance spectra are not sufficiently different for distinction but infrared spectra allow a positive identification to be made and reference spectra are provided for the bromination products of 2,4-, 2,5-, 2,6-, 4,5-, and 3,5-dimethoxyamphetamines. The application of gas-liquid and thin layer chromatography for the analysis of these products is discussed. The bromination of 2,3-dimethoxyamphetamine consistently gave mixtures which could not be separated satisfactorily; spectra are included for completeness of the comparison of products.

Abstract
The total activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.4.1) and the fraction of the enzyme in the active form were assayed in brown fat and liver throughout the development of the rat. In brown adipose tissue, the total activity increased until the late suckling period. After weaning, a decrease was noted. The fraction of the enzyme in the active form did not increase until after 10 days of age, reached its highest level in the late suckling period and remained at this level after weaning. Pyruvate dehydrogenase in liver decreased in both total activity and percentage activity in the early neonatal period. Both parameters increased after this period, reaching their highest levels in the late suckling period. In both fetal liver and fetal brown fat, the total activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase was increased by in vitro incubation with insulin.

Abstract
Twenty-six infants weighing less than 1,300 g at birth were divided into pairs according to birth weight (900-1,100 and 1,101-1,300 g) and gestational age ("appropriate" (AGA) = mean 31 weeks; and "small" (SGA) = mean 34 weeks). One member of the pairs was then allocated randomly to one of two treatment regimens with oral sodium bicarbonate. Group A was treated whenever base excess was greater than -8mEq/liter as detected on twice weekly testing and/or when suspected to be acidotic from failure to gain weight. In group B, base excess was maintained within 1 SD of normal (-3.2 +/- 1.7 mEq/liter). The infants received Enfalac 200 ml/kg/24 hr, at 67 cal/100 ml, with vitamin D 400 IU/24 hr added from age 2 weeks. The following measurements were made: daily weight, weekly length, skinfold thickness, head circumference, twice weekly blood pH, PaCO2, base excess, and weekly plasma total calcium, ionic calcium, total magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, and total protein. There were six pairs of each of AGA and SGA infants and two unpaired group A infants. Weekly weight gains did not differ between group A and group B or between AGA and SGA. Length increment was greater in AGA than in SGA babies (0.94 +/- 0.02 vs 0.85 +/- 0.04 cm/week) but not significantly so (P less than 0.1), and in group B babies compared to group A babies (0.973 +/- 0.029 vs 0.83 +/- 0.037 cm/week) (P less than 0.01). Plasma pH was lower in group A (7.23 +/- 0.02) than in group B (7.30 +/- 0.02) and calcium ion activity higher (group A 2.72 +/- 0.04; group B 2.51 +/- 0.06 mEq/liter) between ages 20 and 29 days. Plasma magnesium was higher in group A (1.77 +/- 0.04 mEq/liter) than in group B (1.56 +/- 0.06 mEq/liter) from age 20 to 39 days. Inorganic phosphorus concentrations were consistently higher in group A than in group B, but the differences did not reach significance. Mean total protein concentrations did not rise above 4.5 g/100 ml and tended to be higher in babies of group A than of group B. Bone age was retarded in all babies. Radiographs available for 7 of 13 SGA infants were normal, whereas 6 of 11 radiographs of AGA babies showed some osteoporotic changes.

Abstract
A case of transient situational disturbance in a Darwin evacuee is presented in order to place on record the nature of and the circumstances associated with a "breakdown" following the patient's evacuation form Darwin as a result of cyclone Tracy. The apparently gross behavioural disturbance was rapidly resolved after the involvement of a number of people willing, and apparently able, to provide help, without resort to hospitalization or medication.

Abstract
The 220 MHz p.m.r. spectra of the dimethylamides of D-lysergic acid (3) and D-iso-lysergic acid (4) are reported. Extensive use of double resonance experiments and the presence of four long-range coupling constants provide an unambiguous assignment for the conformation of 3 in CDCl3. Its D ring is shown to exist in a half-chair form in which the 8-β amide function is pseudo-equatorial. Its epimer essentially exists in the other half-chair form with a pseudo-equatorial 8-α amide function. Data from the p.m.r. spectra of a series of N,N-dialkylamides of these acids are also presented. The spectrum of protonated 3 at 23 °C shows two forms of the 6-NCH3 and 8-CON(CH3)2 groups but only one for the epimer 4.

Abstract
Data from the p.m.r. spectra of β-amino-, β-aminohydrochloride-, β-hydroxy-, and β-nitro-α-phenyl-propanes having methyl or methoxy substituants on the phenyl ring (37 compounds in all) are presented. The α and β protons of the side-chain give a pattern usually analyzable as ABX. The data are discussed in terms of correlations of coupling constants and chemical shifts with electronegativity of the substituent groups, steric and electronic effects, and apparent changes in rotamer populations. Hydrogen-bonding between the amino group of amphetamines and a methoxyl function at the ortho position in the phenyl ring is indicated for the salts but not the free bases.
