Abstract
BACKGROUND Using several transplanted tumors in rats and mice, we have recently shown that the acute extensive necrosis of tumor nodules is caused by the systemic administration of AC7700, a novel combretastatin A-4 derivative, and that the necrosis can be attributed to irreversible stoppage of tumor blood flow (TBF). In this study, the antivascular and antitumor effects of AC7700 were tested on primary autochthonous tumor. MATERIAL AND METHODS Primary sarcomas were induced in Fischer F344 rats by a single s.c. inoculation of 3-methylcholanthrene (MC) (4 mg/0.5 ml/head). Changes in TBF due to AC7700 were measured by hydrogen clearance technique. Antitumor effects of AC7700 were evaluated by histology and tumor growth inhibition. RESULTS The earliest primary tumor appeared 77 days after MC treatment and the last tumor appeared after 273 days (median, 140 days). Once tumors occurred, they continued to grow slowly and never regressed spontaneously. The mean doubling time of tumors (n = 34) during exponential growth was 12.6 +/- 9.0 days (mean +/- SD) (range, 5.4-55.9 days). Blood flow in these slow-growing autochthonous tumors decreased highly significantly from 25.2 +/- 15.5 to 4.4 +/- 3.2 ml/min/100 g (24 electrodes)(P < 0.001) within 30 min due to rapid i.v. injection (0.15 ml/min) of 10 mg/kg AC7700 and the decreased TBF did not recover during the experimental period of 6 h. On the other hand, TBF did not change significantly due to 0.9% NaCl solution (10 electrodes). In addition, TBF immediately began to decrease following slow infusion (0.005 ml/min) of 10 mg/kg AC7700 and decreased by approximately 80% (12 electrodes) at 20 min after the start of AC7700 infusion. To evaluate the antitumor effect of AC7700 on the primary tumors, 10 mg/kg AC7700 was injected i.v. to tumor-bearing rats. Although in the natural course, such tumors never stop growing, the tumor growth was strongly inhibited by AC700 (n = 5). In 2 cases, tumors never regrew for the observation period of 45 days. Biopsy and histological findings (n = 5) showed that tumors underwent extensive necrosis, as was observed previously for transplanted tumors following AC7700 administration. CONCLUSION From the present experiment it was demonstrated not only in transplanted tumors but also in carcinogen-induced autochthonous primary tumors that acute and sustained stoppage of TBF led to strong antitumor effects. The novel anticancer compound AC7700 might become a very useful therapeutic strategy against refractory cancers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The removal of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) for traction maculopathy has recently been advocated. However, it is generally believed that the ILM plays an important role in retinal function, because it is the basal lamina of the Müller cells that are involved in the generation of the electroretinogram (ERG) b-wave. To date, there has been no objective assessment of retinal function on removing the ILM. In this study, the changes of each component of the focal macular electroretinograms (FMERGs) were investigated in eyes before and after the ILM was removed in the macular area during surgery for idiopathic macular holes (IMHs). METHODS FMERGs were elicited by a 15 degrees stimulus centered on the fovea and monitored by an infrared fundus camera. FMERGs were recorded from 49 eyes of 48 patients with IMHs before and 6 weeks after anatomically successful macular hole surgery. Whether an eye had or did not have the ILM removed was randomly determined. The ILM was removed in 30 eyes (ILM-off group) and was not removed in 19 eyes (ILM-on group). Six months after surgery, the same examination was performed in 27 eyes of the ILM-off group and in 15 eyes of the ILM-on group. The amplitudes and implicit times of the a- and b-waves and the mean amplitudes and implicit times of the first three oscillatory potentials (OP1 to OP3) were compared before and after surgery within and between the groups. RESULTS Visual acuity increased significantly after surgery in both groups. In the ILM-on group, the amplitude of the a- and b-waves and the OPs increased significantly 6 months after surgery (P: = 0.0093, P: = 0.0019, P: = 0.0024, respectively, paired t-test). In the ILM-off group, the a-wave amplitude and mean OP amplitudes were significantly larger 6 months after surgery (P: = 0.0077, P: = 0.0030, respectively, paired t-test). The b-wave amplitude, however, did not change significantly. The percentage increase in the b-wave amplitude 6 months after surgery was significantly higher in the ILM-on group (44.0%) than in the ILM-off group (15.0%; P: = 0.037, t-test). CONCLUSIONS The removal of the ILM had no adverse effect on visual acuity. However, the selective delay of recovery of the FMERG b-wave 6 months after surgery suggests an alteration of retinal physiology in the macular region.

Abstract
Electrolyzed water accelerated the healing of full-thickness cutaneous wounds in rats, but only anode chamber water (acid pH or neutralized) was effective. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl), also produced by electrolysis, was ineffective, suggesting that these types of electrolyzed water enhance wound healing by a mechanism unrelated to the well-known antibacterial action of HOCl. One possibility is that reactive oxygen species, shown to be electron spin resonance spectra present in anode chamber water, might trigger early wound healing through fibroblast migration and proliferation.

Abstract
Sodium dodecylsulfate capillary gel electrophoresis (SDS-CGE) was applied to measure the concentration ratios of albumin (Alb) and alpha2-macroglobulin (alphaMG) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and concurrent serum samples from patients with various neurological disorders. The values of the alphaMG index in individual patients were calculated on the basis of the peak area ratios of Alb and an alphaMG subunit on the CSF and serum electropherograms. The alphaMG index value thus obtained was most prominently raised in patients with inflammatory diseases of the brain and/or meninges, suggesting that the function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was disturbed under the pathological conditions in the central nervous system. The measurement of the concentration ratios of Alb and alphaMG in CSF and the concurrent serum samples by the present SDS-CGE system seems to be useful as an aid in the biochemical examination of the BBB function in patients with neurological disorders.

Abstract
Immediately after the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe in 1995, the recurrence rate of peptic ulcer in patients infected with Helicobacter pylori was higher than that in patients in whom H. pylori had been eradicated. We evaluated the influence of H. pylori infection on stress-induced gastric mucosal injury in Mongolian gerbils and C57BL/6 mice. These animals were immersed in water for 30, 120, and 720 min 12 weeks after inoculation with H. pylori, and then killed to assess gastric mucosal damage, and to measure cytokine production (interleukin [IL]-1beta, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10; interferon [IFN]-gamma; and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-alpha) in the gastric tissue of the mice. The stress treatment for 30 min resulted in a significantly higher bleeding rate and bleeding index among infected gerbils and mice compared with results in uninfected animals. Conversely, the bleeding and ulcer indexes were significantly higher in uninfected gerbils after 720 min of the stress treatment than in infected gerbils. Prior to the stress treatment, gastric IL-1beta and IFN-gamma production was significantly higher in the infected group than in the uninfected group. After 120 min of the stress treatment, TNF-alpha production was increased in the infected group, and IL-1beta and IL-10 production was increased in the uninfected group. However, the production of these cytokines showed no change at 30 min of the stress treatment. These results suggest that H. pylori infection influences the development of gastric mucosal injury in the early phase of stress exposure; cytokines do not play a major role in this process.

Abstract
Following previous cloning and expression studies of Xenopus aldolase C (brain-type) and A (muscle-type) cDNAs, we cloned here two Xenopus aldolase B (liver-type) cDNAs (XALDB1 and XALDB2, 2447 and 1490 bp, respectively) using two different liver libraries. These cDNAs had very similar ORF with only one conservative amino acid substitution, but 3'-UTR of XALDB1 contained ca. 1 kb of unrelated reiterated sequence probably ligated during library construction as shown by genomic Southern blot analysis. In adult, aldolase B mRNA (ca. 1.8 kb) was expressed strongly in kidney, liver, stomach, intestine, moderately strongly in skin, and very weakly in all the other tissues including muscles and brain, which strongly express aldolase A and C mRNAs, respectively. In oocytes and early embryos, aldolase A and C mRNAs occurred abundantly as maternal mRNAs, but aldolase B mRNA occurred only at a residual level, and its strong expression started only after the late neurula stage, mainly in liver rudiment, pronephros, epidermis and proctodeum. Thus, active expression of the gene for aldolase B, involved in dietary fructose metabolism, starts only later during development (but before the feeding stage), albeit genes for aldolases A and C, involved in glycolysis, are expressed abundantly from early stages of embryogenesis, during which embryos develop depending on yolk as the only energy source.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the retina of basigin (Bsg) knockout mice by electrophysiological and histologic methods and thereby to determine the possible function of Bsg in phototransduction and retinal development. METHODS Scotopic and photopic electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded from 11 wild-type, 12 heterozygous, and 8 homozygous Bsg gene knockout mice of different ages. The retinas were also examined by histologic and immunolabeling methods. RESULTS Bsg knockout mice of 5 to 41 weeks of age showed a decrease in the amplitude of all components of both the photopic and scotopic ERGs. In contrast, the fundus and the fluorescein fundus angiography and morphology of the retina at the light microscopic level appeared to be normal until 8 weeks of age in Bsg knockout mice. Thereafter, the length of outer segment and outer nuclear layers decreased with increasing age. Immunohistochemical analysis localized Bsg protein in a variety of cells in the retina, especially in the pigment epithelium, the upper outer plexiform layer and the inner segments of photoreceptor cells. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrated that both rod and cone function were severely affected from an early age by the targeted disruption of the Bsg gene. In spite of abnormal ERGs, the photoreceptor cells maintained normal morphology up to 8 weeks. Thereafter, the photoreceptor cells degenerated gradually and were almost ablated by 41 weeks.

Abstract
We examined the differentiation-inducing effects of extracts of 49 wild plants, 25 types of seaweed and 26 mushrooms in Akita on the human leukemia cell line HL60 and a B16 mouse melanoma-derived sub-clone with high differentiation capability (B16 2F2). Differentiation inducers of HL60 cells such as retinoic acid, showed no effects on the differentiation of B16 2F2 cells. Furthermore, chemical compounds known to be inducers of B16 cells, did not induce differentiation of HL60 cells. Screening tests showed that the differentiation of HL60 cells was induced by extracts of 28 wild plants, 10 types of seaweed and 2 mushrooms, and melanogenesis of B16 2F2 cells was increased by extracts of 21 wild plants, 8 types of seaweed and 7 mushrooms. All of the alcoholic extracts of plants belonging to the subfamily Cichorioideae of the family Compositae caused cell differentiation of the melanoma cell line. The extracts of Chinese dandelion root, also inhibited cell growth and induced melanogenesis of B16 2F2 cells. We isolated the active compound from ethanol extracts of the crude drug. Chemical and physical data for the active compound were identical with those for lupeol, a lupane-type triterpene.

Abstract
We report a neonate with angio-oedema following fetal hydrops caused by maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Levels of complement components, including total haemolytic complement activity and C1 inhibitor concentration, were within normal ranges in cord blood. Neonatal angio-oedema might be included in the clinical spectrum of parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has proved effective in the treatment of gastric cancer, but there is room for improvement. To achieve the technical goal of carrying out endoscopic PDT, endoscopists need to determine the precise area for laser irradiation at adequate dosages. This report describes the use of a shapememory alloy (SMA) loop snare as a useful tool in endoscopic PDT. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eleven patients with biopsy-proved early gastric cancer were treated with endoscopic PDT after intravenous injection of Photofrin II (2 mg/kg b.w.). Five patients underwent PDT using the SMA loop snare, and six underwent PDT without the use of the device. Cancer lesions smaller than 2 cm in diameter were irradiated with an excimer-dye laser (4 mJ, 80 Hz, 630 nm) for 20 min. RESULTS All five patients (100%) treated with PDT using the SMA loop snare, and four of the six patients (67%) treated with PDT without use of the SMA loop snare, showed complete remission. CONCLUSIONS The SMA loop snare routinely forms a circle 2 cm in diameter, covering an area of 3.14 cm2, and makes it possible to mark and calculate the precise area of cancerous lesions for irradiation at appropriate dosages. The findings of this study suggest that the SMA loop snare is an effective tool for PDT in early gastric cancer.

Abstract
Tumor tissue is composed of cancer cells (parenchyma) and tumor vessels (interstitium). Many investigators have pointed out that blood flow in tumors has a very inhomogenous distribution, and that this inhomogeneity in blood flow increases as tumors grew. This would be a certain cause of insufficient drug delivery to tumor tissues. Among the experimental evidence using Yoshida Sarcoma and Ascites Hepatomas, functional differences in microcirculation between tumor and normal tissues were found by Suzuki et al. (1977). Under hypertensive state induced by the continuous infusion of angiotensin II, tumor blood flow increased remarkably, while there was no change or decrease in blood flow in normal tissues such as the brain, bone marrow, liver and kidney. Moreover, the increase in blood flow in tumors was selective, as the mean blood pressure remained at the level of 150 mmHg. Increases were confirmed not only in many growing sites such as in the liver, muscle, subcutis, and even microfoci, but also in various kinds of xenografted human tumors and autochthonous tumors. Augmentation of the anti-tumor effects of angiotensin II-induced hypertension chemotherapy (IHC) for advanced gastric carcinoma was revealed in two randomized controlled trials (RCT-1 & 2) of collaborative study groups in Japan. The response rates were 42.9% vs 10.5% in RCT-1 and 31.3% vs 6.7% in RCT-2. The frequencies of toxicities were not statistically different. In the results of phase II studies from 1978 to 1994 (OPN-1) and 1995 to 1999 (OPN-2) for advanced gastric carcinoma (GC), the response rates were 37.9% and 35.7%. Down staging in which the conclusive stage score was lower than the score of the clinical stage, was observed in 8 out of 94 cases (19%) with primary lesions in total and in 30 patients (63%) receiving reduction surgery after IHC, since 1978. It is very important for exact evaluation after chemotherapy to understand or estimate the pathohistological changes in the tumor and its degenerated or repaired tissues, which present various clinical images. In the present study, the actual administered dose intensity of adriamycin (aDIadm) was 5.9 +/- 2.4 mg/sqm/w, and the ratio of aDIadm to the proposed DIadm of reported FAM/FAP schedules was 0.78 +/- 0.32. IHC with smaller DI could lead to a reduction in the accumulation of toxicities of anti-cancer drugs in the host. In conclusion, IHC might be applied to all kinds of tumors to enhance the chemotherapeutic effects through selective increase of drug delivery to tumors.

Abstract
A 59-year-old woman with recurrent seizures and progressive dementia is reported. Her past history and familial history were unremarkable. She became short-tempered at 56 years old (Oct. 1991). She had the first seizure attack and was admitted to a hospital at March 4, 1993, with prolonged disturbance of consciousness and subsequent mental deterioration. Her brain CT showed multiple small calcifications in the subcortical white matter and pons. The laboratory data including blood count, serum chemistry, serological studies and CSF was normal. MRI and digital subtraction angiography of the cranial vessels were unremarkable. There was a decrease in accumulation in the right cerebral hemisphere on 123I IMP SPECT. Despite anti-convulsant therapy, she had recurrent seizures several times, with gradual worsening of her mental state. She had the latest seizure attack and was transferred to Matsusaka Chuo Hospital, on August 29, 1993. After the attack she had been in the apallic state, and died on Nov. 13, 1995. This case was discussed in a neurological CPC. The discussants suggested that the isolated angiitis of the central nervous system caused secondary seizures and cerebral infarctions. Post-mortem examination revealed the CNS findings of vasculitis at various stages, calcification or mineralization mainly in the subcortical white matter and pons, massive cerebral infarctions with massive exudate, fresh and old small bleedings and exudate around the inflamed or calcified vessels. The white matter degeneration resembled that of Binswanger leukoencephalopathy. The final pathological diagnosis was isolated angiitis of the central nervous system since there was no inflammatory changes or atherosclerotic change of the blood vessels in the extracranial organs.

Abstract
A case of adult Bochdalek hernia in a naturally healthy 49-year-old woman is described. She was seen at our hospital because of cough lasting for about one month. The chest X-ray film revealed a gastrointestinal gas image in the left thoracic cavity. In addition, the CT scan and upper gastrointestinal series showed prolapse of the stomach, small intestine and a part of transverse colon. Operation was performed through a mini-thoracotomy using a thoracoscope assistedly. No hernia sac was observed and the diaphragmatic defect was 6 x 5 cm in size. After the organs was restored, the defect was closed with continuous over-and-over suture and the diaphragm was enhanced by PROLEN MESH.

Abstract
A new genetic locus, epi-1, has been identified and mapped, which affects epithelialization of various tissues in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Seven independent epi-1 mutant alleles have been obtained. These mutants have a wide spectrum of abnormalities, all seem to be caused by a primary defect of basement membrane. We have identified the epi-1 gene as a structural gene of laminin alpha chain. The sequence analyses of the gene and cDNAs revealed that the gene consists of 15 exons and encodes a protein of 3704 amino acids in an open reading frame of 11115 base pairs. The nematode alpha chain is similar to its vertebrate and fly orthologs in the domain structure. The mRNA is trans-spliced to SL1 leader RNA as many of the nematode mRNAs. Mutation sites have been identified in four alleles. Two alleles have nonsense mutations and produce truncated proteins lacking the domain necessary for the formation of a heterotrimeric laminin molecule. The other two alleles have missense mutations in domains VI and IIIb, respectively.

Abstract
As the first examples among marine algal hemagglutinins, the primary structures of two hemagglutinins, named hypnin A-1 and A-2, from the red alga Hypnea japonica, were determined by Edman degradation. Both hemagglutinins were single-chain polypeptides composed of 90 amino acid residues including four half-cystines, all of which were involved in two intrachain disulfide bonds, Cys(5)-Cys(62) and Cys(12)-Cys(89). Hypnin A-1 and A-2 had calculated molecular masses of 9146.7 and 9109.7 Da which coincided with determined values, 9148 and 9109 Da, by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, respectively. Both hemagglutinins only differed from each other at three positions; Pro(19), Arg(31) and Phe(52) of hypnin A-1 as compared with Leu(19), Ser(31), and Tyr(52) of hypnin A-2. Approximately 43% of total residual numbers consisted of three kinds of amino acids: serine, glycine and proline. The hemagglutination activities were lost by reduction and alkylation of the disulfide bonds. The nature of the small-sized polypeptides, including disulfide bonds, may contribute to the extreme thermostability of the hemagglutinins. Sequence having overall similarity to hypnin A-1 or A-2 was not detected in databases. Unexpectedly, however, hypnins contained a motif similar to the alignment of the C-terminal conserved amino acids within carbohydrate-recognition domains of C-type animal lectins. Furthermore, interestingly, the hemagglutination activities were inhibited by a protein, phospholipase A-2 besides some glycoproteins, suggesting that hypnins may possess both a protein-recognition site(s) and a carbohydrate-recognition site(s).

Abstract
To determine whether the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC), ventral hippocampus and hippocampo-PFC pathway are involved in operant lever-press learning, we conducted lidocaine injections to these brain sites. Rats were injected immediately after lever-press acquisition in the first training, and the second 5-min test the next day. Results showed the response rate of either PFC- or ventral hippocampus-inactivated rats to be lower than that of control rats in the test the next day. Rats having lidocaine injected into the unilateral ventral hippocampus combined with contralateral medial PFC also showed lower response rate in their tests. These results suggest that hippocampo-PFC disconnection disturbs operant learning.

Abstract
Most solid tumors possess unique pathophysiological characteristics that are not observed in normal tissues or organs, such as extensive angiogenesis and hence hypervasculature, defective vascular architecture, impaired lymphatic drainage/recovery system, and greatly increased production of a number of permeability mediators. The phenomenon now known as the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect for lipid and macromolecular agents has been observed to be universal in solid tumors. Primarily, enhanced vascular permeability will sustain an adequate supply of nutrients and oxygen for rapid tumor growth. The EPR effect also provides a great opportunity for more selective targeting of lipid- or polymer-conjugated anticancer drugs, such as SMANCS and PK-1, to the tumor. In the present review, the basic characteristics of the EPR effect, particularly the factors involved, are described, as well as its modulation for improving delivery of macromolecular drugs to the tumor. Tumor-specific vascular physiology is also described.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Under systemic hypertension induced by angiotensin II (AII) infusion, an attenuated vasoconstrictive response to the infusion in tumours was observed and a marked increase in tumour blood flow was observed in comparison with that in normal tissues. The results show a parallel circuit that connects the vascular bed of the pre-existing tissue to that of the tumour. The phenomenon was absent when hypertension was provoked by other vasoconstrictive agents such as norepinephrine or endothelin-1. However, the biological basis for this attenuated vasoconstrictive response to angiotensin II observed in tumours has not been fully elucidated. METHODS We assessed this response to characterise the angiotensin II receptor density and affinity in normal and tumour tissues. AH109A and LY80 tumour cell lines were transplanted to the skin in nude rats. Four weeks later, the rats were sacrificed. 125I-[Sar1, Ile8] angiotensin II was used to map its receptors in rat tissues using in vitro computerised autoradiography. Operated human gastric cancer tissues from a 49-year-old and a 66-year-old male patients were also investigated. RESULTS The numbers of angiotensin II receptors were markedly reduced in tumour tissues without a change of affinity. The numbers in AII-R in tumours were shown to be mainly AT1 by the marked reduction in radioligand binding achieved by losartan but not by PD123177. The same results were observed in human gastric cancer. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the decrease in angiotensin II receptors in tumours may explain the haemodynamic effect of angiotensin II-induced hypertension on tumour blood flow. This condition for drug delivery to tumour tissue may play a major role in enhancing the therapeutic effects of chemotherapy.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether melittin, the principal toxin of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom, can be used as an algogenic agent in the study of pain in humans. Five micrograms of melittin in 0.5 ml of saline was intradermally injected into the volar aspect of the forearm. Resultant pain was scored by a visual analogue scale (VAS), and skin temperature change was analyzed by means of a computer-assisted infrared thermography. Intradermal melittin temporarily produced severe pain, followed by a sustained increase in skin temperature. The skin temperature increase peaked in about 10 min and outlasted 1 h. Topical application of 10% lidocaine gel did not significantly suppress the melittin-induced pain, but markedly suppressed both the increase in the peak temperature and the area of temperature increase. In conclusion, 5 microg of melittin is sufficient to produce pain in humans and 10% lidocaine gel differentially decreases the melittin-induced axon reflex without any significant analgesic effect.

Abstract
To enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy against cancer, it is important to deliver anticancer drugs preferentially to cancer cells and to retain the drugs there for a prolonged time. The in vivo prolongation of the exposure time of anticancer drugs in tumors can be accomplished by decreasing tumor tissue blood flow (tBF) after anticancer drug administration. The present study demonstrated that temocapril hydrochloride, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, decreases tumor tBF markedly in LY80 tumor, a subline of Yoshida sarcoma in the rat, without affecting the blood flow in liver, kidney, bone marrow, and brain. In tumor areas with flow of above 20 ml/min/100 g, the tBF decreased by approximately 50% due to temocapril. In tumor areas with tBF of about 20 ml/min/100 g, it became less than 3 ml/min/100 g with temocapril and did not recover during the 2 h experiment. These findings were obtained not only in large tumors, but also in microfoci growing within a transparent chamber. Furthermore, even when temocapril was administered under the condition of increased tumor tBF by administering angiotensin II, tumor tBF decreased immediately. Using this technique, it should be possible to trap anticancer drugs selectively in tumor tissue for an extended period of time.

Abstract
In the survey of 14 species of laboratory-cultured cyanobacteria for hemagglutinins, we newly detected the activity in two species, Oscillatoria agardhii, strain NIES-204, and Phormidium foveolarum, strain NIES-503. From the extract of O. agardhii, which showed the highest activity with trypsin-treated erythrocytes of rabbit, a lectin was purified to homogeneity by the combination of precipitation with (NH4)2SO4, gel filtration, hydrophobic chromatography and reverse phase chromatography. The purified lectin, designated OAA, was a monomeric protein with an apparent molecular weight of 13,000 on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 16,000 on gel filtration. The amino acid composition was rich in glycine and acidic amino acids. The hemagglutination activity was inhibited by glycoproteins such as yeast mannan, but not by any of the monosaccharides tested. The activity was stable over a wide range of pH (4-11) and at a high temperature of 80 degrees C, and independent on the presence of divalent cations. The features of OAA resembled those of many of lectins from marine macroalgae. The sequence of amino-terminal residues of OAA was determined as ALYNVENQWGGSSAPWNEGG, which was highly homologous to those of lectins from macroalgae of the genus Eucheuma and that of a myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus hemagglutinin.
