Abstract
AIMS To devise and evaluate a method for selective isolation of the less abundant actinomycetes, Nocardia spp. in soil. METHODS AND RESULTS This newly developed method is based on differentiating Nocardia from other actinomycete taxa by centrifugation. A water suspension of air-dried soil is centrifuged through a gradient consisting of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% sucrose at 240 x g for 30 min. The 20% sucrose layer, which is enriched with Nocardia spp., is then diluted and plated on humic acid-vitamin agar supplemented with antibacterial agents. The proposed method consistently achieved selective isolation of Nocardia spp. in all 14 soil samples tested, which accounted for 5-89% of the total microbial population recovered. Tentative taxonomic characterization based on a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the 16S ribosomal DNA suggested that many of the soil isolates could belong to N. asteroides, N. salmonicida or N. uniformis. CONCLUSIONS Differential centrifugation can successfully and efficiently isolate soil Nocardia populations that are suppressed by conventional dilution plating approaches. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The development and application of new methodologies with which to isolate less-explored actinomycete taxa is important for improving our knowledge about their taxonomy, ecology and industrial applications.

Abstract
In December 2000, a female infant hospitalized in our Neonatal Care Centre was infected with varicella by her mother. Although prophylactic intravenous acyclovir was administered at a dose of 15 mg/kg daily, she later developed varicella during her hospital stay. We therefore initiated control procedures to prevent further hospital-acquired infections. Oral acyclovir (40 mg/kg daily divided into four doses) was administered prophylactically to six preterm infants in contact with the varicella patient. None of six preterm infants subsequently developed clinical varicella or had any adverse effects associated with acyclovir administration. It is suggested that prophylactic administration of oral acyclovir (40 mg/kg daily) might prevent hospital-acquired varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infections, and that oral acyclovir may be an option for VZV prophylaxis in situations where VZV immunoglobulin is not available.

Abstract
We have investigated the fractal dynamics of intracloud microdischarges responsible for the formation of a so-called drainage system of electric charge transport inside a cloud volume. Microdischarges are related to the nonlinear stage of multiflow instability development, which leads to the generation of a small-scale intracloud electric structure. The latter is modeled by using a two-dimensional lattice of finite-state automata. The results of numerical simulations show that the developed drainage system belongs to the percolation-cluster family. We then point out the parameter region relevant to the proposed model, in which the thundercloud exhibits behavior corresponding to a regime of self-organized criticality. The initial development and statistical properties of dynamic conductive clusters are investigated, and a kinetic equation is introduced, which permits us to find state probabilities of electric cells and to estimate macroscopic parameters of the system.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterial species implicated as an important pathogen in the development of adult periodontitis. We previously cloned a gene encoding dipeptydilaminopeptidase IV (DAPIV) from P. gingivalis. In the present study, for immunological diagnosis and development of passive immunization, we produced a mouse monoclonal antibody (MAb) capable of inhibiting the DAPIV activity of P. gingivalis using highly purified recombinant DAPIV as an immunogen. The constructed MAb, designated as MAb-Pg-DAP-1, significantly inhibited DAPIV activity in P. gingivalis, as well as slightly inhibited that in other gram-negative bacteria such as Porphyromonas endodontalis and Prevotella loesheii, whereas no inhibition was seen in the gram-positive bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus. Furthermore, the MAb did not inhibit DAPIV enzyme activity in human serum. This novel MAb may be useful for the development of immunological diagnosis capability and in passive immunization.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using a pulsed laser is becoming popular, but its cytotoxic effect is still not clear. We therefore studied the cytotoxicity of PDT using a pulsed laser by changing its irradiation parameters and compared the degrees of cytotoxicity with those of PDT using continuous-wave (CW) light sources. Mice renal cell carcinoma cells were incubated with PAD-S31, a water-soluble photosensitiser of which the excitation peak is 670 nm, and were then irradiated with either a tungsten lamp, a CW diode laser, or a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser-based optical parametric oscillator system. When the PAD-S31 concentration and total light dose were constant (12 micro g/ml and 40 J/cm(2), respectively), the CW laser caused fluence rate-dependent decrease in cellular proliferation until the fluence rate reached 90 mW/cm(2), at which point inhibition of cellular proliferation was more than 80%. The cytotoxicity then became almost saturated at fluence rates of>90 mW/cm(2). On the other hand, inhibition of cellular proliferation in samples irradiated with the pulsed laser reached 80% even at the fluence rate of 15 mW/cm(2), and, interestingly, the cytotoxicity paradoxically decreased with increase in the fluence rate. Moreover, the cytotoxicity in the PDT using the pulsed laser depended on the repetition rate. The inhibition of cellular proliferation by PDT using 30-Hz irradiation was greater than that by PDT using 5-Hz irradiation when the same fluence rates were used. These results suggest that the efficacy of PDT using a pulsed laser depends considerably on fluence rate and repetition rate.

Abstract
Peritoneal recurrence after curative resection of malignant tumor with negative cytology is considered to be caused by microscopic dissemination of the exfoliated cancer cells from primary tumors to serosal surfaces at the time of operation, not detectable with conventional diagnostic tools. We applied the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 20 (CK 20) to detect micrometastatic foci in the peritoneal cavity of colon cancer patients. Cytological samples taken by peritoneal lavage from a series of 79 colon cancer patients were analyzed microscopically, for CEA levels, and by RT-PCR analysis using nested primers for CEA and CK 20. Cases with both CEA and CK 20 signals were defined as PCR-positive. This RT-PCR method proved both sensitive (1 tumor cell/10(6) non-tumor cells on preparation of serial colorectal cancer cell dilutions) and specific (no false positive results, 0/23 tested in our control experiment). Intraperitoneal micrometastatic cells were detected in peritoneal lavage 7.6% by cytology, 17.7% by CEA levels, and 24.1% by RT-PCR (significantly higher than by cytology: p=0.0046). RT-PCR detection rate increased in parallel with pathological depth of tumor invasion, and also a pathological stage-dependence was suggested according to the tumor-node-metastasis classification of the International Union Against Cancer. Our results suggest that CEA and CK 20 mRNA identification by RT-PCR appeared to be reliable and may be useful for early diagnosis in peritoneal dissemination of colon cancer.

Abstract
Proximal occlusion or trapping combined with EC-IC bypass is usually employed as a definite treatment for a giant fusiform aneurysm in cases where it is impossible to apply clips and do vascular reconstruction. Endovascular treatment is very important as an alternative or combined technique if direct surgery is impossible. The authors report a young male who presented with a 2 nd episode of intracranial bleeding in basal ganglion and subarachnoid hemorrhage with mild right hemiparesis. His 3D-CT scan revealed left ruptured partially thrombosed giant M1 fusiform aneurysm and left unruptured C3 saccular aneurysm. He underwent STA-MCA bypass with attempted M1 reconstruction and a week later attempted total occlusion of the M1 aneurysm with coils. But only a ruptured point at the distal M1 was occluded which, however, resulted in temporary mild right hemiparesis and aphasia. A month later when he was supposed to have his 2 nd coiling procedure his angiogram demonstrated spontaneous and complete obliteration of both the M1 and C3 aneurysms without any new neurological deficit, so no further endovascular procedure was attempted. The discussion is based on this case and previous reports regarding difficult giant M1 fusiform aneurysms, its treatment and spontaneous thrombosis of aneurysmal sac after bypass and distal occlusion. Conclusions are drawn that 1) spontaneous thrombosis of M1 and C3 aneurysms should be the result of hemodynamic alteration in both aneurysms due to a lower flow velocity induced by distal bypass and distal occlusion of M1, 2) combined distal bypass and endovascular obliteration of the aneurysmal sac with coils is a good alternative if vascular reconstruction is difficult or impossible.

Abstract
We measured levels of bisphenol-A (BPA) in a priming solution and blood of a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit. Eight circuits were used in the study of a priming solution. Blood samples were obtained from 6 patients who underwent open heart surgery after the commencement of CPB and at the termination of CPB. Another 3 samples were collected directly from the saline in a polyethylene container as a control. Then the concentrations of BPA in them were determined by means of gas chromatography. No detectable BPA was found in controls. However, a small amount was detected in the saline from the circuits (0.9 +/- 1.1 micrograms/l). A very small amount was also detected in the blood after the commencement and at the termination of CPB (0.3 +/- 0.2 microgram/l, and 0.4 +/- 0.3 microgram/l, respectively). BPA was considered to be leached from the circuit to the priming solution and the blood because the parts of the reservoir and the oxygenator were made of polycarbonate containing BPA. We suppose the BPA concentration is probably at a safe level. However, the data on the endocrinologically toxic level of blood BPA are insufficient. Therefore, the use of plastic in a circuit may require closer scrutiny to determine whether BPA contributes to exposure to xenoestrogens.

Abstract
To more accurately determine the tissue-specific expression of the target gene in prostate cancer cells, we introduced the enhancer element (-4,777 to -3,934; PSAR) and the promoter region (PSAP) of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) gene. Furthermore, to elucidate the advantages of using liposomes as a gene carrier, we screened more than 20 liposome preparations in this study. The 5' upstream region of PSA gene (PSARPSAP) was conjugated to either the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene or herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (TK) gene, and the transfection of these plasmids was carried out using cationic liposomes, DMRIE-C (Gibco) or LipoTAXI (Stratagene). The expression of CAT activity was clearly observed when PSARPSAP-CAT plasmid was transfected into PSA-positive LNCaP cells, whereas no CAT activity was detected in PSA-negative DU145 cells or bladder carcinoma T24 cells. The CAT activity increased after the addition of testosterone. We then evaluated the therapeutic effect of the PSARPSAP-TK plasmid in vitro. When PSARPSAP-TK plasmid was transfected and ganciclovir was added to the medium, the growth of LNCaP cells was inhibited, while no growth inhibition was observed in DU145 cells. Furthermore, this inhibitory effect was observable even when the cells were cultured in a medium supplemented with dialyzed fetal bovine serum. These results suggest that the liposome-mediated transfection of PSARPSAP-TK appears to be a potentially effective approach for selecting the optimal treatment for tumor cells producing PSA even with the low androgen levels seen in patients treated by anti-androgen therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to demonstrate the utility of volume rendered multi-slice helical three-dimensional CT angiography in patients with cerebral aneurysm when compared with single slice CT angiography and formal digital subtraction angiography. METHODS A prototype Toshiba Aquilon multi-slice CT scanner was employed with the following scan conditions: voltage 135 kV; current 300 mA; slice thickness 0.8 mm; scan speed 0.75 sec/cycle; couch speed 1 mm/sec; range 50 mm from foramen magnum; scan pitch 3; three dimensional images were reconstructed using multiple image projections and integral volume rendering algorithms on a Xlink/Xtension workstation. 80 cases of multi-slice CTA for cerebral aneurysm carried out at Fujita University from January 1999 to January 2001 were reviewed. RESULTS The advantages of multi-slice imaging are illustrated with representative cases of cerebral aneurysm - good demonstration of three dimensional anatomy, appreciation of perforators down to 1 mm in size, delineation of the vessels around the aneurysm complex, relationship between the aneurysm and skull base, information on calcification, thrombus and blebs in the wall and eleven routine views for perusal. CONCLUSION Multi-slice CTA is a significant improvement over single slice CTA for cerebral aneurysms. It is our experience the superior and precise images produced by multi-slice technology displays anatomical information not readily available from standard DSA. Multislice 3D-CTA is relatively non-invasive and provides better and adequate detail for surgical planning. The basis of multi-slice CT angiography is described. Multi slice CTA is changing the way cerebral aneurysms are being managed nowadays. New advances in the technology of multi-slice CTA resulting in increased image resolution are outlined.

Abstract
Significant anomalous changes in the ultra low frequency range (approximately 0.01 Hz) were observed in both geoelectric and geomagnetic fields before the major volcano-seismic activity in the Izu Island region, Japan. The spectral intensity of the geoelectric potential difference between some electrodes on Niijima Island and the third principal component of geomagnetic field variations at an array network in Izu Peninsula started to increase from a few months before the onset of the volcano-seismic activity, culminating immediately before nearby magnitude 6 class earthquakes. Appearance of similar changes in two different measurements conducted at two far apart sites seems to provide information supporting the reality of preseismic electromagnetic signals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive upregulation of gastric epithelial cell apoptosis is speculated to be associated with ulcerogenesis in Helicobacter pylori-positive peptic ulcer disease. H. pylori may have an ulcerogenic effect through induction of gastric epithelial cell apoptosis mediated by infiltrating T cells and their soluble products. METHODS The contents of soluble Fas ligand (sFasL) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in organ cultures and the degree of apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins in the gastric epithelium were examined using the mucosal tissues obtained from the antrum and the ulcer site in patients with H. pylori-positive gastric ulcer (GU). The molecular mechanisms of gastric epithelial cell apoptosis induced by sFasL and IFN-gamma were analyzed using epithelial cell lines, MKN 45 and KATO III. RESULTS The mucosal tissues of the ulcer site had substantially higher contents of sFasL and IFN-gamma in organ cultures regardless of its healing stage in association with increased numbers of apoptotic cells and enhanced expression of proapoptotic proteins Bak and Bax in the surface foveolar epithelium as compared with the antral tissues in patients with H. pylori-positive GU. The addition of sFasL caused increases in cytotoxic cell death and caspase-3 activation in MKN 45 and KATO III cells in which IFN-gamma treated cells had more prominent effects than untreated cells. The expression of Bak in MKN 45 cells increased when they were treated with IFN-gamma. CONCLUSIONS Upregulation of mucosal sFasL and IFN-gamma may be involved in ulcerogenesis in patients with H. pylori-positive GU through induction of gastric epithelial cell apoptosis.

Abstract
The bacteriophage P1-derived Cre-loxP system is a powerful and versatile tool for in vivo DNA recombination. It is widely used in gene targeting research. The combination of the Cre-loxP system and a specific promoter enables conditional "knockout" of a target gene in a particular tissue or cell type. It has also made it possible to delete genes in adult animals that are essential for embryogenesis. This system is also used to enhance tissue- or tumor-specific promoter activities that are useful for gene therapy of certain types of cancer. It is expected that this simple and effective system will be further utilized in various research applications.

After introducing of Helical scanning CT (HCT) and 3D-CTA (three-dimensional CT angiography), various improvements to these methods have been made every year to achieve better imaging quality. The current resolution permits visualisation of the internal structure of tumors, although as yet insufficiently clearly. We suggest that these improvements can be more efficient than conventional cerebral aneurysms angiography. In this study, we compared HCT and 3D-CTA with conventional cerebral angiography in patients with cerebral aneurysms at our facility. We also examined whether 3D-CTA has the possibility of independent clinical application and can surpass conventional DSA in diagnostic efficacy. In this paper, we found this information insufficient in clipping operations using 3D-CTA only when 1) It was difficult to distinguish a crooked infundibular dilation from an aneurysm, 2) Imaging threshold influenced the measured value of the vascular diameter and 3) It was also difficult to confirm whether the peripheral vessels adhere to the aneurysm. In conclusion, from the result of the comparison between 3D-CTA and DSA in this study, it was concluded that 3D-CTA is a reliable alternative method to conventional angiography in the diagnosis of anterior circulation and most aneurysms of regular size. In such cases it may be possible to obtain the same quality of preoperative information, but it is less invasive.

Abstract
Geographic Information System is becoming a very important tool for environmental health research. We have produced various digital maps for different scales for different purposes. The burst of E. Coli O-157, distribution of hazadarous chemicals in East Asia, and coastal resin pellets are some examples. It now becomes a problem how to archive these digital maps and how to retrieve these maps according to user's request. We have developed a computer system that can store various types of digital maps and can retrieve them from WWW client machines. The key concept of this archive system is to classify every digital maps according to their region of interest.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis has been implicated as an important pathogen in the development of adult periodontitis. This bacterium possesses hemagglutinating and hemolytic activities to attach and lyse erythrocytes. Hemolysis by this oral pathogen functions to provide heme-containing molecules for growth in the periodontal pocket. We previously constructed a monoclonal antibody using P. gingivalis vesicles as the immunogen, designated as MAb-Pg-vc, which inhibited vesicle-associated hemagglutinating activity. Furthermore, we cloned the gene encoding 130-kDa hemagglutinin (130-kDa HAG) and identified its functional motif for attachment to erythrocytes. Generally, bacterial cell attachment to erythrocytes is an important initial step for expressing hemolysis activity. In the present study, we examined the effect of MAb-Pg-vc on the hemolytic activity of P. gingivalis cells. The MAb-Pg-vc significantly inhibited the hemolytic activity and, further, this inhibitory activity was reduced by the synthetic peptide of the 130-kDa HAG functional motif.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis, an important pathogen in periodontitis, aggregates with other oral microorganisms such as Streptococcus gordonii. We previously succeeded in gene cloning the 40-kDa outer membrane protein (OMP) from P. gingivalis. Although recombinant (r) 40-kDa OMP itself did not show aggregation activity, the affinity-purified antibody against 40-kDa rOMP inhibited the aggregation activity of P. gingivalis cells toward S. gordonii which is one of the first oral bacteria to colonize on tooth surfaces and can be expected to support subsequent colonization of other bacteria. In this study, in order to clarify the pathological role of 40-kDa OMP, we used a cross-linking reagent to construct a polymeric form of r40-kDa OMP and examined its aggregation activity. The polymeric r40-kDa OMP significantly expressed aggregation activity with S. gordonii cells. Moreover, the antibody against r40-kDa OMP inhibited the aggregation activity of the polymeric r40-kDa OMP. These findings clearly demonstrate that 40-kDa OMP, as a multivalent form, is one of the important aggregation factors on the cell surface of P. gingivalis.

Abstract
We describe three new mutations in a recently identified exon, ORF15, of the retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator gene (RPGR) in three unrelated Japanese families (Families 1-3) with X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP). The affected males had typical retinitis pigmentosa (RP), whereas the obligate carrier females showed a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from minor symptoms to severe visual disability. Some carrier females in Families 1 and 2 showed typical RP, most carriers manifested high myopia and astigmatism, and their corrected visual acuity was insufficient. They showed an impairment of cone function following the rod dysfunction and accompanied by refractive errors. Microsatellite analysis of Family 1 revealed that the RP in the family was linked to the RP3 locus. Although one patient in the family had no mutation in the previously published exons 1-19 including exon 15a, he had a single-nucleotide insertion in exon ORF15 (g.ORF15 + 753-754 insG). Likewise, patients in Families 2 and 3 had two-base insertion/deletion in the exon, i.e., g.ORF15 + 833-834delGG and g.ORF15 + 861-862insGG, respectively. These insertional/deletional mutations observed in the three families are all different and new, and are predicted to lead to a frameshift, resulting in a truncated protein. These findings may support the previous hypothesis that RPGR-ORF15 is a mutational hot spot.

Abstract
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is known to activate the signal transduction machinery, including the transcription factor, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB). The activation mechanism of NF-kappaB has been studied intensively, while the negative regulatory mechanisms of NF-kappaB remain to be clarified. In the present study, we found that genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, augmented IL-1alpha-dependent NF-kappaB activation, suggesting the presence of a tyrosine kinase mediating a suppression signal on NF-kappaB. As determined by luciferase reporter gene assay using kappaB-responsive element, genistein enhanced IL-1alpha-induced NF-kappaB activation. Although genistein failed to increase luciferase activity at 1 and 3 h after IL-1alpha stimulation, it induced prolonged activation beginning at 6 h after the initial stimulation. We next examined whether genistein augmented the DNA-binding activity of NF-kappaB, using electrophoretic mobility shift assay. In the case of the control experiment, the binding of NF- kappaB to the kappaB-responsive element peaked at 30 min after IL-1alpha stimulation, and decreased thereafter. In contrast, treatment with genistein maintained the maximum binding activity for at least 2 h after stimulation. Moreover, genistein enhanced the IL-1alpha-dependent degradation of IkappaBalpha. Taken together, our results indicate that genistein augments IkappaB degradation, resulting in continuous NF-kappaB activation. This suggests the possibility that tyrosine kinase negatively regulates NF-kappaB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Twenty-two institutes have organized Keio University Prostate Cancer Study Group to study clinical efficacy and safety of Leuprolide acetate (Leuplin) for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer (clinical stage D1 and D2). Cotreatment of Leuplin and Estramustine phosphate disodium (Estracyt) has been performed to investigate its clinical efficacy. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and two cases of advanced prostate cancer were treated either with Leuplin alone (group I), Leuplin and Estracyt (group II) or Estracyt alone (group III). After 12 weeks treatment, clinical effects against subjective symptoms (pain, voiding difficulty, performance status and body weight), serum testosterone level, tumor size and serum PSA level were examined to investigate short-term effect of each treatment. The treatment had been continued for 24 months and the treatment effects including progression free survival and overall survival were analyzed. RESULTS Clinical efficacy after 12 weeks treatment were examined among 97 cases (group I; 35 cases, group II; 36 cases, group III; 26 cases). The background of those patients in each group was statistically equal. Treatment effects against subjective symptoms and serum testosterone level statistically revealed no significant difference among 3 groups. Treatment effects against primary tumor, bone metastatic lesion, lymphnode metastatic lesion and serum PSA level were investigated and anti-tumor effect was characterized by total efficacy rate (complete remission rate plus partial remission rate) of each treatment group. Treatment efficacy rates for each lesion and PSA demonstrated no statistical difference among 3 treatment groups. Total efficacy rate of group I, II and III were 88.2%, 84.0% and 78.3%, respectively, which statistically revealed no significant difference. Total efficacy rate of each group after completing 24 months treatment was; group I 80.0%, group II 55.6% and group III 83.3%, which statistically showed no significant difference among 3 treatment groups. The median day for progression free survival of group I, II and III were 661, 731 and 517, respectively. The overall survival rate of group I, II and III after completing 24 months treatment were 77.5%, 83.0% and 72.4%, respectively. Both progression free survival rates and overall survival rates revealed no significant difference among 3 groups. Side effects during 24 months treatment were seen in 8.6% of group I, 47.2% of group II and 26.9% of group III, and these occurrence rates were significantly different among the groups (p = 0.0013). CONCLUSION Although number of the cases had not been able to continue the treatment for their side effects, the statistical characterization demonstrated that cotreatment of Leuplin and Estracyt had no greater treatment effect than monotreatment of each drug.

Abstract
UNLABELLED To discover the relationship between antioxidant enzyme activities and trace elements in low-birthweight infants during the early postnatal period, we analysed catalase (CAT), CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in erythrocytes. and compared them with Fe, Cu. Zn and Se levels in plasma, and Cu, Zn and Se levels in erythrocytes until 16 wk after birth. Thirteen low-birthweight infants whose mean birthweight and gestation were 1520 +/- 293 g and 32.0 +/- 2.8 wk were enrolled in this study. All infants were without chronic complications, well nourished, and predominantly fed standard formula or preterm formula based on cow's milk, commercially available in Japan. Cu and Zn levels in erythrocytes did not decline after birth, in contrast to a temporal decrease in plasma Zn. Erythrocyte CAT activity was significantly higher at 16 wk than that at birth or 4 wk of age. Erythrocyte CuZn-SOD activity did not change throughout the study period. Only Se in plasma and erythrocytes decreased remarkably after birth, which resulted in a significant decline in erythrocyte GSH-Px activity at 8 and 16 wk (11.2 +/- 2.0 and 11.0 +/- 1.1 U/g Hb) compared to that at birth (12.4 +/- 2.1 U/g Hb). CONCLUSION During the early postnatal period. erythrocyte CAT and CuZn-SOD activities did not decrease in formula-fed, low-birthweight infants. Japanese commercial formula not supplemented with Se, however, caused postnatal plasma and erythrocyte Se deficiency and a concomitant decline in erythrocyte GSH-Px activity in the same subjects.
