Abstract
BACKGROUND Current guidelines recommend the use of pH monitoring to confirm the diagnosis of acid reflux in patients with a normal endoscopy. This analysis evaluated the financial impact of pH monitoring with the wireless pH capsule on a managed care organization (MCO) in the United States. METHODS A decision model was constructed to project total 1-year costs to manage GERD symptoms with and without the adoption of wireless pH capsules in a hypothetical MCO with 10 000 eligible adult enrollees, of whom 600 presented with GERD-like symptoms. Costs of GERD diagnosis, treatment, and symptom management for those in whom a GERD diagnosis was ruled out by pH monitoring were assessed. The incremental per-member-per-month (PMPM) and per-treated-member-per-month (PTMPM) costs were the primary outcomes. Data sources included literature, expert input, and standardized fee schedules. RESULTS An increase of 10 percentage points in the use of pH monitoring with wireless pH capsules yielded incremental PMPM and PTMPM costs of $0.029 and $0.481, respectively. The costs of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy to the plan dropped to $236,363 from $238,086, while increases were observed in pH monitoring (from $16 739 to $21 973) and non-GERD therapy costs (from $1392 to $1740). The results were sensitive to the percentage of patients requiring repeat endoscopy before wireless pH monitoring and the cost of PPIs. CONCLUSIONS Timely and increased use of pH monitoring as recommended in published guidelines leads to less unnecessary use of PPIs with a modest budgetary impact on health plans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Canine lymphoproliferative disease often presents with lymphocytosis and is immunophenotypically diverse. HYPOTHESIS Immunophenotype predicts prognosis in canine lymphoproliferative disorders involving circulating lymphocytosis. ANIMALS Dogs that had peripheral blood evaluation performed by flow cytometry by the Clinical Immunology Service at Colorado State University between 2003 and 2005. METHODS Outcome data regarding treatment and survival were sought on patients with lymphocytosis comprising a single lymphocyte subset. Ninety-six patients that met the inclusion criteria had sufficient follow-up information to be included in the study. RESULTS Four main phenotypic classifications were found: CD8+ T-cell, CD21+ B-cell, CD4-8-5+ (aberrant T-cell phenotype), and CD34+ (undifferentiated progenitor). Expression of CD34 predicted poor outcome with median survival of 16 days (P < .0001) compared with other phenotypes. Within the CD8+ phenotype, dogs presenting with a lymphocytosis >30,000 lymphocytes/muL had significantly shorter median survival (131 days) than those presenting with <30,000 lymphocytes/muL (1098 days, P < .0008). Within the T-cell leukemias, there was no difference in outcome between dogs with CD4-8-5+ leukemia and dogs with the CD8+ T-cell phenotype nor was the loss of expression of the pan-leukocyte marker CD45 associated with decreased survival time. A CD21+ lymphocytosis composed of large cells was associated with shorter survival time (129 days) than those with smaller circulating cells (median survival not reached, P < .01). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Immunophenotyping provides an objective method for determining prognosis in lymphoproliferative disorders characterized by lymphocytosis.

Abstract
A multicentre planning study comparing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) plans for the treatment of a head and neck cancer has been carried out. Three Australian radiotherapy centres, each with a different planning system, were supplied a fully contoured CT dataset and requested to generate an IMRT plan in accordance with the requirements of an IMRT-based radiation therapy oncology group clinical trial. Plan analysis was carried out using software developed specifically for reviewing multicentre clinical trial data. Two out of the three plans failed to meet the prescription requirements with one misinterpreting the prescription and the third failed to meet one of the constraints. Only one plan achieved all of the dose objectives for the critical structures and normal tissues. Although each centre used very similar planning parameters and beam arrangements the resulting plans were quite different. The subjective interpretation and application of the prescription and planning objectives emphasize one of the many difficulties in carrying out multicentre IMRT planning studies. The treatment prescription protocol in a clinical trial must be both lucid and unequivocally stated to avoid misinterpretation. Australian radiotherapy centres must show that they can produce a quality IMRT plan and that they can adhere to protocols for IMRT planning before using it in a clinical trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipid oxidation products react with protein to produce lipofuscin-like fluorophores (P-LLF) and modified apolipoprotein B that is an important element of the atherogenic properties of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). The aim of this study was to compare plasma concentrations of P-LLF between men with coronary artery disease (CAD) treated with statin drugs and healthy controls and to identify determinants of P-LLF. METHODS Plasma markers of protein modification including P-LLF and oxidized low-density lipoprotein-4E6 (oxLDL-4E6), low-density lipoprotein-conjugated dienes (LDL-CD), lipid peroxides, apolipoprotein B, and serum albumin were measured in 24 men with CAD who were receiving statin therapy and 20 healthy men in the same age range. RESULTS Plasma P-LLF (+23%, p = 0.001) was significantly higher and plasma oxLDL-4E6 (-33%, p <0.001) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) (-30%, p <0.001) concentrations were significantly lower in men with CAD compared with controls. Plasma P-LLF concentration was correlated significantly with plasma apoB (r = -0.596, p <0.001), serum albumin (r = 0.518, p <0.001), and age (r = 0.390, p = 0.009) and these variables were independent predictors of P-LLF in the study population. Plasma P-LLF was no longer significantly higher in men with CAD when plasma apoB concentration was taken into account. CONCLUSIONS Plasma P-LLF concentration is abnormally high and appears to be closely associated with lower levels of apoB in men with CAD receiving statin therapy. ApoB may be a preferential target of reactive aldehydic lipid oxidation products and a decrease in apoB may increase the quantity of these products available for condensation with albumin.

Abstract
In Drosophila melanogaster larvae, three classes of circulating cellular immune surveillance cells (hemocytes) can be identified: plasmatocytes, crystal cells, and lamellocytes. Plasmatocytes are professional phagocytes most similar to the mammalian monocyte/macrophage lineage and make up approximately 95% of circulating hemocytes. The other approximately 5% of circulating hemocytes consists of crystal cells, which secrete components necessary for the melanization of invading organisms, as well as for wound repair. A third cell type known as lamellocytes are rarely seen in healthy larvae and are involved in the encapsulation of invading pathogens. There are no obvious mammalian counterparts for crystal cells or lamellocytes, and there is no equivalent to the lymphoid lineage in insects. In this review, I will discuss what is currently known about Drosophila hemopoiesis and the cellular immune response and where possible compare it to vertebrate mechanisms.

Abstract
FAMACHA is a practical on-farm system designed to provide small ruminant producers a tool for improving their management of Haemonchus contortus infections. Although this system has become very popular and widely accepted by small ruminant producers in many regions of the southern United States, there is very limited data reported on the effectiveness of the FAMACHA system when performed by farmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the FAMACHA system for on-farm use by small ruminant producers during the summer season. Small ruminant producers from Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and Puerto Rico were trained to use the FAMACHA system by veterinarians and scientists experienced with this method. FAMACHA scores were assigned at least every 2 weeks by producers to weaned and mature sheep (n=552) and goats (n=676) of various breeds and ages between April and September 2004. At intervals that varied among farms from 2 to 8 weeks, researchers determined body condition scores (BCS; 1=thin and 5=fat) and collected blood and feces from a group of animals selected randomly to determine packed cell volume (PCV) and fecal egg counts (FEC). Two separate anemia thresholds were evaluated; these were defined by either FAMACHA score (>or=3 versus >or=4) or PCV (<or=19 versus <or=15%). The correlation between FAMACHA scores and PCV or FEC was high for both sheep and goats (P<0.001). Specificity was maximized when FAMACHA scores of 4 and 5 were considered anemic, but sensitivity was low. Sensitivity for detecting anemic animals was 50% for sheep and 89% for goats when eye score values of >or=3 were considered anemic and PCV cutoff was <or=15%. The percentage of false negatives (anemic animals not identified by FAMACHA evaluation) was less than 5% in sheep and less than 1% in goats when FAMACHA scores>or=3 were considered anemic and PCV cutoff was <or=15%. In both sheep and goats, predictive value of a negative was greater than 90% for all anemia and eye score categories. These data indicate that the FAMACHA method used by producers is a valuable tool for identifying anemic sheep and goats in the southern United States and Puerto Rico.

Abstract
P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1) is central to the trafficking of immune effector cells to areas of inflammation through direct interactions with P-selectin, E-selectin and L-selectin. Here we show that PSGL-1 was also required for efficient homing of resting T cells to secondary lymphoid organs but functioned independently of selectin binding. PSGL-1 mediated an enhanced chemotactic T cell response to the secondary lymphoid organ chemokines CCL21 and CCL19 but not to CXCL12 or to inflammatory chemokines. Our data show involvement of PSGL-1 in facilitating the entry of T cells into secondary lymphoid organs, thereby demonstrating the bifunctional nature of this molecule.

Abstract
In many cell types it is evident that the small GTPases Rac and Rho regulate each other's activities. What is unclear is exactly how this regulation occurs. To further elucidate this interaction we examined the activities of Rac1 and Rho1 in Drosophila cellular immune surveillance cells. In larvae the cellular immune response involves circulating cells (hemocytes) that can be recruited from a hematopoietic organ located behind the brain, as well as a sessile population found just underneath the larval cuticle. We demonstrate for the first time that Rho-kinase activation requires both Rho1 and the Drosophila c-Jun N-terminal kinase (Basket). We also show that Rac1, via Basket, regulates Rho1 activity, possibly by inhibiting RhoGAPp190. In the reciprocal pathway, co-expression of dominant negative Rho-kinase and constitutive active Rho1 induces a Rac1-like phenotype. This induction requires the formin Diaphanous. Co-expression of dominant negative Rho-kinase and constitutive active Rho1 also induces filopodia formation, with Diaphanous enriched at the tips. The Rac1-like phenotypes, and filopodia formation, could be blocked by co-expression of dominant negative Rac1. Finally, though dominant negative Rac1 is able to block filopodia formation in the overexpression experiments, only Rac2 is necessary for filopodia formed by hemocytes after parasitization.

Abstract
The Drosophila larval cellular immune response involves cells (hemocytes) that can be recruited from a hematopoietic organ located behind the brain, as well as a sessile population of cells found just underneath the larval cuticle arranged in a segmental pattern. By using two Rac1 GTPase effector-loop mutants together with epistasis studies, we show that Rac1 requires the Drosophila melanogaster Jun N-terminal kinase Basket (Bsk), as well as stable actin formation to recruit the sessile hemocyte population. We show that actin stabilization is necessary for Rac1-induced hemocyte activation by lowering cofilin (encoded by the twinstar gene tsr) expression in blood cells. Removing Bsk by RNAi suppressed Rac1-induced release of sessile hemocytes. RNAi against Bsk also suppressed Rac1 induction of lamellocytes, a specialized population of hemocytes necessary for the encapsulation of invading pathogens. Furthermore, Rac1 and Bsk are involved in regulating the formation of actin- and focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-rich placodes in hemocytes. Lastly, Rac1 and Bsk are both required for the proper encapsulation of eggs from the parasitoid wasp Leptipolina boulardi. From these data we conclude that Rac1 induces Bsk activity and stable actin formation for cellular immune activation, leading to sessile hemocyte release and an increase in the number of circulating hemocytes.

Abstract
A new multileaf collimator (MLC) model has been incorporated into version 7.4 of the Pinnacle radiotherapy treatment planning system (Philips Radiation Oncology Systems, Milpitas, CA). The MLC model allows for rounded MLC leaf-ends and provides separate parameters for inter-leaf transmission, intra-leaf transmission and the tongue width of the MLC leaf. In this report we detail the method followed to commission the MLC model for a Varian 120-leaf Millennium MLC (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA, USA) for both 6 and 10 MV photons, and test the validity of the model for an IMRT field. Dose profiles in water were measured for a range of square MLC field sizes and compared to the Pinnacle computed dose profiles; in addition, the dose distribution for a series of adjacent MLC fields was measured to observe the model's behaviour along match-lines. Based on these results intra-leaf transmissions of 1.5% for 6 MV and 1.8% for 10 MV, leaf-tip radius of 12.0 cm, an inter-leaf transmission of 0.5%, and a tongue width of 0.1 cm were chosen. Using these values to compute the planar dose distribution for a 6 MV IMRT field, the new version of Pinnacle displayed improved dosimetric agreement with the dose-to-water EPID image and ion chamber measurements when compared to the old version of Pinnacle, particularly along the MLC tongue edge and across match-lines. Discrepancies of up to 5% were observed between calculated and measured doses along match-lines for both 6 MV and 10 MV photons; however, the new MLC model did predict the presence of match-lines and was a significant improvement on the previous model.

Abstract
Forage-based livestock systems have been implicated as major contributors to deteriorating water quality, particularly for phosphorus (P) from commercial fertilizers and manures affecting surface and ground water quality. Little information exists regarding possible magnitudes of nutrient losses from pastures that are managed for both grazing and hay production and how these might impact adjacent bodies of water. We examined the changes that have occurred in soil fertility levels of rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.)-based beef cattle pastures (n = 4) in Florida from 1988 to 2002. These pastures were managed for grazing in spring followed by haying in late summer and were fertilized annually with P (39 kg P2O5 ha(-1)) and K (68 kg K2O ha(-1)). Additionally, we investigated trends in water quality parameters and trophic state index (TSI) of lakes (n = 3) associated with beef cattle operations from 1993 to 2002. Overall, there was no spatial or temporal buildup of soil P and other crop nutrients despite the annual application of fertilizers and daily in-field loading of animal waste. In fact, soil fertility levels showed a declining trend for crop nutrient levels, especially soil P (y = 146.57 - 8.14 x year; r2= 0.75), even though the fields had a history of P fertilization and the cattle were rotated into the legume fields. Our results indicate that when nutrients are not applied in excess, cow-calf systems are slight exporters of P, K, Ca, and Mg through removal of cut hay. Water quality in lakes associated with cattle production was "good" (30-46 TSI) based on the Florida Water Quality Standard. These findings indicate that properly managed livestock operations may not be major contributors to excess loads of nutrients (especially P) in surface water.

Abstract
[reactions: see text] Fragmentation of the cyclobutane-containing adducts generated from intramolecular cycloadditions of cyclobutadiene with olefins provides rapid entry into bicyclo[5.3.0]decane and bicyclo[4.3.0]nonane ring systems. Whereas earlier studies featured thermal methods to achieve the desired rearrangements, a mild, Lewis acid-mediated fragmentation has been identified for substrates with appropriate functionality adjacent to the strained ring system. The substrate scope and stereochemical outcome of the acid-mediated fragmentation are complementary to the thermal ring expansions, particularly in the case of the bicyclo[5.3.0]decanes.

Abstract
It has been reported that during Drosophila embryonic development, and in cell culture, that the Rac GTPases are redundant. To better elucidate Rac function in Drosophila, we decided to study the role of Rac2 in larval cellular defense reactions against the parasitiod Leptopilina boulardi. Here we show a dramatic effect in the context of cellular immunity where, unlike embryonic development, Rac2 appears to have a non-redundant function. When an invading parasitoid is recognized as foreign, circulating hemocytes (blood cells) should recognize and attach to the egg chorion. After attachment the hemocytes should then spread to form a multilayered capsule surrounding the invader. In Rac2 mutants this process is disrupted. Immune surveillance cells, known as plasmatocytes, adhere to the parasitoid egg but fail to spread, and septate junctions do not assemble, possibly due to mislocalization of the Protein 4.1 homolog Coracle. Finally, larger cells known as lamellocytes attach to the capsule but also fail to spread, and there is a lack of melanization. From these results it appears that Rac2 is necessary for the larval cellular immune response.

Abstract
In vitro studies have demonstrated that IL-2 and IL-12 can support formation of P-selectin ligands (P-SelL) in activated T cells, ligands that are variably required for efficient lymphocyte recruitment to sites of inflammation. To ascertain whether these cytokines were required for P-SelL formation in vivo, TCR transgenic CD8 T cells specific for male Ag (HY) were transferred into male mice under conditions in which either IL-2 and/or IL-15 or IL-12Rp40 were absent. P-SelL formation at day 2 was unperturbed in HY-TCR IL-2(null) CD8 T cells responding in doubly deficient IL-2(null)IL-12(null) or IL-2(null)IL-15(null) male recipients. HY-specific CD8 T cell proliferative responses detected in both spleen and peritoneum occurred vigorously, but only splenic CD8 T cells up-regulated P-SelL, demonstrating that in vivo induction of P-SelL is an active, nonprogrammed event following T cell activation and that despite the efficacy of IL-2 and IL-12 in supporting P-SelL formation in vitro, these cytokines appear to be dispensable for this purpose in vivo.

Abstract
PURPOSE We performed an analysis comparing the cost of medical management with TUNA therapy for a 5-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS Published costs for tamsulosin, finasteride, transurethral needle ablation (TUNA, Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota) and transurethral resection of the prostate were used to construct a cost analysis model comparing medication with TUNA. The model analyzed monotherapy with an alpha-blocker (tamsulosin) and a 5alpha-reductase inhibitor (finasteride), combination therapy using both medications, and a mixed scenario using monotherapy and combination therapy. Published data were used to estimate the rate of surgical intervention in patients initially treated with medications or TUNA. RESULTS Tamsulosin monotherapy was less expensive than TUNA for 5 years ($3,485 for tamsulosin vs $4,811 for TUNA year 5). Finasteride monotherapy reaches a break-even point with TUNA during year 5 ($4,867 for finasteride vs $4,811 for TUNA). Combination therapy reaches a break-even point with TUNA after approximately 2 years 7 months of treatment ($4,515 for combination therapy vs $4,572 for TUNA) and the mixed scenario breaks even with TUNA at approximately year 4 ($4,696 for medical management vs $4,645 for TUNA). CONCLUSIONS The TUNA procedure compares favorably to combination medical therapy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia on a cost basis. alpha-Blocker monotherapy is less costly than TUNA while 5alpha-reductase inhibitor monotherapy is approximately equivalent to TUNA for 5 years. The TUNA procedure is less expensive than combination medical management for 5 years, with a break-even point at approximately 2 years 7 months.

Abstract
Core 2 beta1,6-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase (C2GlcNAcT) synthesizes essential core 2 O-glycans on selectin ligands, which mediate cell-cell adhesion required for lymphocyte trafficking. Although gene-deletion studies have implicated C2GlcNAcT-I in controlling selectin ligand-mediated cell trafficking, little is known about the role of the two other core 2 isoenzymes, C2GlcNAcT-II and C2GlcNAcT-III. We show that C2GlcNAcT-I-independent P-selectin ligand formation occurs in activated C2GlcNAcT-I(null) CD8 T cells. These CD8 T cells were capable of rolling under shear flow on immobilized P-selectin in a P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1-dependent manner. RT-PCR analysis identified significant levels of C2GlcNAcT-III RNA, identifying this enzyme as a possible source of core 2 enzyme activity. Up-regulation of P-selectin ligand correlated with altered cell surface binding of the core 2-sensitive mAb 1B11, indicating that CD43 and CD45 are also physiological targets for this alternate C2GlcNAcT enzyme. Furthermore, C2GlcNAcT-I-independent P-selectin ligand induction was observed in an in vivo model. HY(tg) CD8 T cells from C2GlcNAcT-I(null) donors transferred into male recipients expressed P-selectin ligand in response to male Ag, although at reduced levels compared with wild-type HY(tg) CD8 T cells. Our data demonstrate that multiple C2GlcNAcT enzymes can contribute to P-selectin ligand formation and may cooperate with C2GlcNAcT-I in the control of CD8 T cell trafficking.

Abstract
An attack by a parasitic wasp activates a vigorous cellular immune response in Drosophila larvae. This response is manifested by an increased number of circulating cells, the hemocytes, and by the appearance of a specialized class of hemocyte, the lamellocytes, which participate in the encapsulation and killing of the parasite. To study the molecular mechanisms of this response, we have overexpressed different genes in the hemocytes, by using the GAL4-upstream activating sequence system and a hemocyte-specific Hemese-GAL4 driver. Multiple transgenes were tested, representing several important signaling pathways. We found that the proliferation response and the activation of lamellocyte formation are independent phenomena. A drastic increase in the number of circulating hemocytes is caused by receptor tyrosine kinases, such as Egfr, Pvr, and Alk, as well as by the downstream signaling components Ras85D and pointed, supporting the notion that the Ras-mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway regulates hemocyte numbers. In the case of Pvr and Alk, this phenotype also is accompanied by lamellocyte formation. By contrast, constitutively active hopscotch and hemipterous give massive activation of lamellocyte formation with little or no increase in total hemocyte numbers. This finding indicates that both the Jak/Stat and the Jun kinase pathways affect lamellocyte formation. Still other signals, mediated by aop(ACT), Toll(10b), and Rac1 expression, cause a simultaneous increase in lamellocyte and total cell numbers, and the same effect is seen when WNT signaling is suppressed. We conclude that the activation of a cellular response is complex and affected by multiple signaling pathways.

Abstract
Recent studies on sheep and goat farms in the southern United States indicate that multiple-anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus is becoming a severe problem. Though many factors are involved in the evolution of resistance, the proportion of the parasite population under drug selection is believed to be the single most important factor influencing how rapidly resistance develops. Therefore, where prevention of resistance is an important parallel goal of worm control, it is recommended to leave a portion of the animals untreated. Recently, a novel system called FAMACHA was developed in South Africa, which enables clinical identification of anemic sheep and goats. When H. contortus is the primary parasitic pathogen, this system can be applied on the farm level to reduce the number of treatments administered, thereby increasing the proportion of the worm population in refugia. Since most studies validating the FAMACHA method have been performed in South Africa, it is important that the method be tested in other regions before its use is broadly recommended. We performed a validation study of FAMACHA by testing the system in sheep (n = 847) and goats (n = 537) of various breeds and ages from 39 farms located in Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and the US Virgin Islands. The color of the ocular conjunctiva of all animals were scored on a 1-5 scale using the FAMACHA card, and blood samples were collected from each animal for determination of packed cell volume (PCV). Fecal samples were also collected from a majority of the animals tested for performance of fecal egg counts (FEC). Correlations between PCV and eye scores, PCV and FEC, and FEC and eye scores were all highly significant for both sheep and goats (P < 0.001). Data for both FAMACHA scores and PCV were evaluated using two separate criteria for anemia: eye score values of 3, 4 and 5 or 4 and 5, and PCV values of < or =19 or < or =15 were considered anemic. Specificity was maximized when eye score values of 4 and 5 were considered anemic and PCV cut off for anemia was < or =19, but sensitivity was low. In contrast, sensitivity was 100% for both sheep and goats when eye score values of 3, 4 and 5 were considered anemic and PCV cut off was < or =15, but specificity was low. In both sheep and goats, predictive value of a negative was greater than 92% for all anemia and eye score categories, and was greater than 99% for both eye score categories when an anemia cutoff of < or =15 was used. Predictive value of a positive test was low under all criteria indicating that many non-anemic animals would be treated using this system. However, compared to conventional dosing practices where all animals are treated, a large proportion of animals would still be left untreated. These data indicate that the FAMACHA method is an extremely useful tool for identifying anemic sheep and goats in the southern US and US Virgin Islands. However, further studies are required to determine optimal strategies for incorporating FAMACHA-based selective treatment protocols into integrated nematode control programs.

Abstract
The infrared spectra (3200-400 cm(-1)) of krypton solutions of 1,3-difluoropropane, FCH2CH2CH2F, at variable temperatures (-105 to -150 degrees C) have been recorded. Additionally, the infrared spectra (3200-50 cm(-1)) of the gas and solid have been recorded as well as the Raman spectrum of the liquid. From a comparison of the spectra of the fluid phases with that in the solid, all of the fundamental vibrations of the C2 conformer (gauche-gauche) where the first gauche indicates the form for one of the CH2F groups and the second gauche the other CH2F, and many of those for the C1 form (trans-gauche) have been identified. Tentative assignments have been made for a few of the fundamentals of the other two conformers, i.e. C2v (trans-trans) and Cs (gauche-gauche'). By utilizing six pairs of fundamentals for these two conformers in the krypton solutions, an enthalpy difference of 277 +/- 28 cm(-1) (3.31 +/- 0.33 kJ mol(-1)) has been obtained for the C2 versus C1 conformer with the C2 conformer the more stable form. For the C2v conformer, the enthalpy difference has been determined to be 716 +/- 72 cm(-1) (8.57 +/- 0.86 kJ mol(-1)) and for the Cs form 971 +/- 115 cm(-1) (11.6 +/- 1.4 kJ mol(-1)). It is estimated that there is 64 +/- 3% of the C2 form, 34 +/-3% of the C1 form, 1% of the C2v form and 0.6% of the Cs conformer present at ambient temperature. Equilibrium geometries and total energies of the four stable conformers have been determined from ab initio calculations with full electron correlation by the perturbation method to second order as well as by hybrid density functional theory calculations with the B3LYP method using a number of basis sets. The MP2 calculations predict the C1 conformer stability to be slightly higher than the experimentally determined value whereas for the C2v and Cs conformers the predicted energy difference is much larger than the experimental value. The B3LYP calculations predict a better energy difference for both the C1 and C2v as well as for the Cs conformers than the MP2 values. A complete vibrational assignment is proposed for the C2 conformer and many of the fundamentals have been identified for the C1 form based on the force constants, relative intensities and rotational-vibrational band contours obtained from the predicted equilibrium geometry parameters. By combining previously reported rotational constants for the C2 and C1 conformers with ab initio MP2/6-311 + G(d, p) predicted parameters, adjusted r0 parameters have been obtained for both conformers. Comparisons are made with the parameters obtained for some other molecules containing the FCH2 group. The spectroscopic and theoretical results are compared to the corresponding properties for some similar molecules.
