Intermittent protein-sparing fasting with abdominal belting

In an attempt to minimize the weight regain that often follows effective weight reduction, a programme has been evaluated which involved the use of a nylon waist cord which could be readily tightened but not lengthened, during a regime of alternating periods of a liquid diet and a high-fibre natural diet combined with behavioural modification. Forty subjects completed the initial cycle of a liquid regime with an overall weight loss of 7.7 kg during the treatment period. Thirty-six of these subjects have been followed up for a mean of 12 months after the completion of the treatment programme. Five subjects are difficult to categorize having worn the cord for some but not all of this time. Fourteen have continued to wear the waist cord throughout and have achieved a further mean weight loss of 4.8 kg. This differs significantly from the 17 subjects who cut off the cord and who have regained a mean of 6.6 kg. The results suggest that an adjustable waist cord is a valuable aid to achieving successful and permanent weight reduction in some subjects.

Analytical evaluation of the purity of commercial preparations of Cibacron Blue F3GA and related dyes

The composition and purity of three commercial preparations of the widely used affinity chromatography ligand Cibacron Blue F3GA have been evaluated by TLC and by paired-ion reversed-phase HPLC and were found to contain several chromophoric species. Stepwise synthesis of the reported dye structure showed that only one commercial preparation contained any actual Cibacron Blue F3GA, and that it was present only in minor amounts. In all three preparations the major component appears to be the dichlorotriazinyl precursor of Cibacron Blue F3GA. Commercial samples of the related dyes Procion Blue MX-3G and Procion Blue MX-R are also highly heterogeneous. In addition, our experiments suggest that TLC results must be evaluated carefully to ensure that catalytic surface activity of alumina and silica has not created ghost bands.

Knowledge of diabetes and glaucoma in a rural North Carolina community

Effective use of time, money, and personnel in the delivery of health care services to rural areas requires baseline information on the target population with respect to the problem being addressed. Prior to the initiation of an educational program on diabetes and glaucoma, the Public Health Department of Davie County, North Carolina, conducted a survey of county residents to determine knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning these illnesses. The goals of the survey were to determine (1) basic knowledge with respect to the nature of each illness, symptoms, and high-risk groups, (2) the stigma attached to each illness, and (3) health practices in terms of previous tests for diabetes and glaucoma and whether or not the respondents know where to go for such tests. Information was obtained through a telephone survey of randomly sampled households in Davie County. Results of the survey indicated that the level of knowledge for both diabetes and glaucoma is particularly low with respect to identification of high-risk groups and symptoms, and approximately one-quarter of all respondents felt there was some stigma attached to diabetes and glaucoma. The lowest levels of knowledge were observed in the youngest and oldest respondents, males, the unmarried, and those with low levels of educational attainment. The differences in knowledge by age, marital status, and sex were found to be partially a function of differing levels of educational attainment. These data have provided information useful in the selection of content areas for the programs and in the identification of target populations for special emphasis.

Hormonal changes associated with testicular atrophy and gynaecomastia in patients with leprosy

Basal LH, FSH, 17 beta-oestradiol and testosterone and the gonadotrophin responses to luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) were studied in male patients with leprosy (twenty-four with lepromatous and six with tuberculoid leprosy). The mean basal LH and FSH was significantly elevated in the lepromatous group and was associated with an excessive response of both gonadotrophins following LHRH administration. The mean basal testosterone and 17 beta-oestradiol values in the lepromatous group were significantly lower than those of the tuberculoid and control groups. The abnormal gonadotrophin and sex steroid values in the lepromatous group are in keeping with the testicular atrophy and gynaecomastia accompanying this form of leprosy. However, the lack of a significant correlation between basal FSH and testicular atrophy should be noted. In addition, no correlation between any of these hormonal values and gynaecomastia could be demonstrated. The patients with tuberculoid leprosy had essentially normal hormonal profiles (except for two who had raised 17 beta-oestradiol values). This is compatible with the lack of gonadal involvement in these patients.
