Abstract
Metformin, the first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes (T2D), decreases hepatic glucose production and reduces fasting plasma glucose levels. Dorzagliatin, a dual-acting orally bioavailable glucokinase activator targeting both the pancreas and liver glucokinase, decreases postprandial glucose in patients with T2D. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial, the efficacy and safety of dorzagliatin as an add-on therapy to metformin were assessed in patients with T2D who had inadequate glycemic control using metformin alone. Eligible patients with T2D (n = 767) were randomly assigned to receive dorzagliatin or placebo (1:1 ratio) as an add-on to metformin (1,500 mg per day) for 24 weeks of double-blind treatment, followed by 28 weeks of open-label treatment with dorzagliatin for all patients. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels from baseline to week 24, and safety was assessed throughout the trial. At week 24, the least-squares mean change from baseline in HbA1c (95% confidence interval (CI)) was -1.02% (-1.11, -0.93) in the dorzagliatin group and -0.36% (-0.45, -0.26) in the placebo group (estimated treatment difference, -0.66%; 95% CI: -0.79, -0.53; P < 0.0001). The incidence of adverse events was similar between groups. There were no severe hypoglycemia events or drug-related serious adverse events in the dorzagliatin and metformin combined therapy group. In patients with T2D who experienced inadequate glycemic control with metformin alone, dorzagliatin resulted in effective glycemic control with good tolerability and safety profile ( NCT03141073 ).

Abstract
Background Previous studies reported that proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) was a key player in the regulations of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis. The current study aimed to detect the expression of PCSK9 in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and investigate the possible relationships between PCSK9 and related metabolic phenotypes in GDM. Methods Circulating PCSK9 levels were determined by ELISA kit in a cohort of subjects with GDM (n = 170) and normal glucose tolerance (NGT; n = 130). We collected blood samples from all participants for the biochemical index determinations. Diagnosis of GDM was made according to the International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups Consensus Panel. Correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to study the potential associations between PCSK9 and GDM. Results GDM women presented significantly higher circulating PCSK9 levels than those in NGT pregnant subjects (268.07 ± 77.17 vs. 254.24 ± 74.22 ng/ml, P < 0.05). In the GDM group, serum PCSK9 levels were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (R = 0.251, P = 0.015), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (R = 0.275, P = 0.009), total cholesterol (TC) (R = 0.273, P = 0.010), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (R = 0.326, P = 0.002) after adjustment of age and gestational age. Logistic regression found that age [odds ratio (OR) = 5.412, P = 0.02] and serum PCSK9 levels (OR = 4.696, P = 0.03) were independently associated with GDM. Compared with the lowest serum PCSK9 level quartile group, the prevalence of GDM was significantly higher in the highest quartile group, the ORs of GDM were 3.485 (95% CI 1.408-8.627, P < 0.05 for the trend), after adjusting for potential confounders. Conclusions Circulating PCSK9 levels were associated with dyslipidemia, pathoglycemia, and the risk of incident GDM, indicating a potential link between PCSK9 and GDM.

Abstract
As the main lymphoid organ, the thymus degenerates with age. The loss of thymic epithelial cells is mainly related to thymus degeneration and reduced T cells development. As an insulin sensitizer, metformin is a first-line drug for the treatment of diabetes and has been shown to prolong the lifespan of mice, but the mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we explored the therapeutic effect of metformin on thymus degeneration in the accelerated aging mice, which was established by intraperitoneal injection D-galactose (120 mg/kg/day) for eight weeks. Metformin was intragastrically given with 100 or 300 mg/kg body weight per day, respectively, for six weeks. Histological examination showed that metformin administration could alleviate thymus atrophy caused by D-galactose. In addition, metformin therapy increased mitochondrial membrane potential, with a reduction in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, MDA and SOD levels, and restored mitochondrial balance through enhanced expression of dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1). Furthermore, metformin altered T lymphocyte subsets and cellular senescent cells; the expression of FoxN1, Aire and Sox2 of thymic epithelial cells also increased. Thus, metformin presented a positive effect on thymic degeneration through improving mitochondrial function. Taken together, these findings revealed an unexpected complexity in the anti-aging of this widely used drug.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was recently proposed to be renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) with the diagnostic criteria revised. We investigated the similarities and differences in the prevalence and clinical characteristics of MAFLD and NAFLD in Chinese adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 9980 Chinese individuals aged 40 years or older was performed between 2011 and 2012 using randomized, stratified cluster sampling in Shanghai, China. A detailed questionnaire and the results of abdominal ultrasonography, a standardized 2-h 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and blood biochemical examinations were collected. RESULTS A total of 9927 subjects were included in this study. The prevalence of MAFLD (40.3%) was significantly higher than that of NAFLD (36.9%) (P < 0.05). MAFLD was highly prevalent in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (53.8%), impaired fasting glucose (35.7%) and impaired glucose tolerance (40.9%). High risk of advanced fibrosis based on fibrosis-4 was highly prevalent (14.7%) in lean MAFLD with T2DM. Among 9927 subjects, 3481 (35.1%) fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for MAFLD and NAFLD (MAFLD+NAFLD+), 521 (5.2%) MAFLD+NAFLD-, and 181 (1.8%) MAFLD-NAFLD+. The MAFLD+NAFLD- group had more significant metabolic disorders than those in the MAFLD+NAFLD+ group (all P < 0.05). Among MAFLD-NAFLD+ subjects, 82.9% had metabolic disorders. CONCLUSIONS The new definition of MAFLD may better reflect the pathogenesis related to metabolism. Future research should focus on studying the natural history, pathogenesis and treatment effectivity of the overlap and non-overlap of NAFLD and MAFLD subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atherosclerosis is considered a chronic inflammatory condition. The immune system is a key mediator in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. In a previous study, we found that the immune system was activated in diabetes and that total white blood cell (WBC) counts were elevated significantly in diabetic patients. To investigate whether WBC subtype counts in newly diagnosed diabetes are risk factors for future cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, we conducted a prospective population-based cohort study. METHODS A total of 1498 newly diagnosed diabetic patients aged 40 to 70 years old were followed up for three years. Participants with previous CVD history and abnormal WBC counts were excluded. CVD events were recorded during follow-up. RESULTS We found that the baseline lymphocyte counts were independently associated with cardiovascular events during follow-up, with the Exp (β) (95% CI) at 1.749 (1.084-2.821). Lymphocyte count ≥2.9 (109/L) was significantly associated with the development of CVD (HR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.12-4.67). The corresponding incidence of CVD per 1000 person-year for the lymphocyte count ≤2.8 (109/L) and lymphocyte count ≥2.9 (109/L) groups were 11.26 and 26.38, respectively. CONCLUSION We concluded that even in a normal range, higher lymphocyte levels may result in a significantly higher CVD risk among diabetic patients. Lymphocyte count ≥2.9 (109/L) is an independent predictor of developing future CVD events.

Abstract
Glioma is the most common malignant tumor of the central nervous system (CNS), with high degree of malignancy and poor prognosis. The gut microbiome (GM) is composed of microorganisms with different properties and functions, which play an important role in human physiology and biological activities. It has been proved that GM can affect the development of glioma through natural immunity, but whether GM can affect glioma through adaptive immunity and whether there are some microorganisms in the GM that may affect glioma growth still remain unclear. In our study, we evaluated the relationship between GM and glioma. We proved that (I) glioma growth can induce structural changes of mouse GM, including the decreased abundance of Bacteroidia and increased abundance of Firmicutes. (II) GM dysbiosis can downregulate Foxp3 expression in the brain and promote glioma growth. A balanced environment of GM can upregulate the expression of Foxp3 in the brain and delay the development of glioma. (III) The increased abundance of Bacteroidia is associated with accelerated glioma progression, while its decreased abundance is associated with delayed glioma progression, which may be one of the key microorganisms affecting glioma growth. This study is helpful to reveal the relationship between GM and glioma development and provide new ideas for adjuvant therapy of glioma.

Abstract
Ileocolic anastomosis is performed via extracorporeal or intracorporeal techniques in robotic right hemicolectomy. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the short-term outcomes of intracorporeal anastomosis (IA) and extracorporeal anastomosis (EA) for robotic right colectomy. The EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched systematically (from inception until March 1, 2020) for randomized and non-randomized control trials reporting the short-term outcomes of IA and EA for robotic right colectomy. Five observational cohort studies involving 585 participants were included in our meta-analysis. Compared to the EA group, the IA group showed significantly longer operation time [weighted mean difference (WMD): 28.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 13.88-43.89, p = 0.0002], lower rate of anastomotic leak (odds ratio: 0.26, 95% CI 0.08-0.85, p = 0.03), and shorter time to first flatus (WMD: - 0.57, 95% CI - 0.95 to 0.19, p = 0.003). However, pooled results revealed no difference in blood loss, complications, wound infection, incisional hernia, length of incision, and hospital stay between the IA and EA groups (p < 0.05). This meta-analysis indicated that IA was superior to EA in terms of anastomotic leak and time to first flatus, but inferior in terms of operation time. Large-scale, multicenter, randomized studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background:Myopia is one of the most common causes of vision impairment in children and adults and has become a public health priority with its growing prevalence worldwide. This study aims to identify and evaluate the global trends in myopia research of the past century and visualize the frontiers using bibliometric analysis.MethodsThe literature search was conducted on the Web of Science for myopia studies published between 1900 and 2020. Retrieved publications were analyzed in-depth by the annual publication number, prolific countries and institutions, core author and journal, and the number of citations through descriptive statistics. Collaboration networks and keywords burst were visualized by VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Myopia citation network was visualized using CitNetExplorer.ResultsIn total, 11,172 publications on myopia were retrieved from 1900 to 2020, with most published by the United States. Saw SM, from the National University of Singapore, contributed the most publications and citations. Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science was the journal with highest number of citations. Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery with the maximum number of publications. The top 10 cited papers mainly focused on the epidemiology of myopia. Previous research emphasized myopia-associated experimental animal models, while recent keywords include “SMILE” and “myopia control” with the stronger burst, indicating a shift of concern from etiology to therapy and coincided with the global increment of incidence. Document citation network was clustered into six groups: “prevalence and risk factors of myopia,” “surgical control of myopia,” “pathogenesis of myopia,” “optical interventions of myopia,” “myopia and glaucoma,” and “pathological myopia.”ConclusionsBibliometrics analysis in this study could help scholars comprehend global trends of myopia research frontiers better. Hundred years of myopia research were clustered into six groups, among which “prevalence and risk factors of myopia” and “surgical control of myopia” were the largest groups. With the increasing prevalence of myopia, interventions of myopia control are a potential research hotspot and pressing public health issue.

Abstract
Pancreatic β cell apoptosis is important in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Generally, apoptotic β cells are phagocytosed by macrophages in a process known as "efferocytosis." Efferocytosis is critical to the resolution of inflammation and is impaired in T2DM. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are increased in T2DM, are known to suppress phagocytosis function in macrophages. In this study, we found that AGEs inhibited efferocytosis of apoptotic β cells by primary peritoneal macrophages in C57BL/6J mice or mouse macrophage cell line Raw264.7. Mechanistically, AGEs inhibit efferocytosis by blocking Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 activity and cytoskeletal rearrangement through receptor for advanced glycation end products/ras homolog family member A/Rho kinase signaling in macrophages. Furthermore, it was observed that AGEs decreased the secretion of anti-inflammatory factors and promoted the proinflammatory ones to modulate the inflammation function of efferocytosis. Taken together, our results indicate that AGEs inhibit efferocytosis through binding to receptor for advanced glycation end products and activating ras homolog family member A/Rho kinase signaling, thereby inhibiting the anti-inflammatory function of efferocytosis.

Abstract
Objectives Osteosarcoma is a major solid malignant tumor of bone, possessing significant burden on healthcare due to non-availability of specific anticancer agents. The current study was conducted to identify novel 1,3,5-triazine derivatives against osteosarcoma. Materials and Methods The compounds were synthesized in a straight-forward two-step reaction and subsequently tested against PI3K and mTOR kinase and anticancer activity against osteosarcoma cells (MG-63, U2-OS, and Saos-2). The effect of the most potent compound was evaluated on apoptosis and cell phase of Saos-2 cells. The pharmacological activity was further established in the patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) mouse model. Results The developed compounds 8 (a-f) showed significant inhibitory activities against PI3K, mTOR, and OS cells. Among the tested series, compound 8a showed highly potent PI3K/mTOR inhibitory activity with significant anticancer activity against Saos-2 cells compared with Imatinib as standard. It also induces apoptosis and causes G2/M arrest in Saos-2 cells. Compound 8a significantly improved body weight, reduced tumor volume, and inhibited lung metastasis in athymic nude mice in a PDOX mouse model. It also showed optimal pharmacokinetic parameters in SD rats. Conclusion In summary, 1,3,5-triazine analogs were identified as new PI3K/mTOR inhibitors against osteosarcoma.

Abstract
The soluble dietary fiber polydextrose (PDX) is a randomly linked glucose oligomer containing small amounts of sorbitol and citric acid and is widely used in the food industry. However, whether PDX can prevent and treat obesity in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice has not been directly investigated, and further studies are needed to better understand the complex interactions among PDX, adipose tissue inflammation and the gut microbiota. In the present study, PDX reduced body weight, fasting blood glucose (FBG), adipose tissue accumulation, adipocyte hypertrophy, serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in HFD-fed mice. Moreover, PDX alleviated serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels and macrophage infiltration in epididymal adipose tissue and resulted in macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that PDX promoted the growth of beneficial microbes such as Bacteroides, Parabacteroides, Alloprevotella, Muribaculum, Akkermansia, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 and UBA1819 in obese mice, which were negatively correlated with subcutaneous fat, epididymal fat, body weight, FBG, serum TC, HDL-C, LDL-C and LPS levels. Our results indicates that PDX can prevent and treat obesity in HFD-fed mice, specifically in alleviating glucolipid metabolism disorders and adipose tissue inflammation, which may be mediated by modulating the structure of the gut microbiota. Therefore, PDX may become a promising nondrug therapy for obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now regarded as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Recent research has suggested that serum creatinine (SCr) may be an indicator of MetS and its related diseases. We aimed to investigate the association between SCr and NAFLD in Chinese adults. METHODS A cross-sectional sample of 8862 subjects aged 40 years or older (40-73 years) from China were analysed in this study. The anthropometric measurements, laboratory tests, and hepatic ultrasonography were conducted. NAFLD presence was defined by hepatic ultrasound in the absence of other liver diseases. RESULTS NAFLD subjects had higher SCr than those without NAFLD (66.8 μmol/L vs. 65.6 μmol/L, p < 0.001). Moreover, SCr levels were correlated with alanine aminotransferase (β = 0.099, p < 0.001), aspartate aminotransferase (β = 0.135, p < 0.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (β = 0.039, p < 0.001), and insulin resistance (β = 0.027, p = 0.014) after adjusted for potential covariates. In the multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analyses, compared to the first SCr quintile, the odds ratio for NAFLD was 1.35 (95% confidence interval 1.14-1.60, p < 0.001) for the fifth quintile after adjusting multiple measured confounders. CONCLUSION SCr concentration is independently associated with NAFLD in a middle aged and older Chinese population. Elevated SCr levels, even within normal ranges, were associated with higher risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
Numerous studies have indicated that a high salt diet inhibits brain Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity, and affects oxidative stress and inflammation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Furthermore, Na+/K+-ATPase alpha 2-isoform (NKA α2) may be a target in the brain, taking part in the development of salt-dependent hypertension. Therefore, we hypothesized that NKA α2 regulates oxidative stress and inflammation in the PVN in the context of salt-induced hypertension. Part I: We assessed NKA subunits (NKA α1, NKA α2, and NKA α3), Na+/K+-ATPase activity, oxidative stress, and inflammation in a high salt group (8% NaCl) and normal salt group (0.3% NaCl). Part II: NKA α2 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was bilaterally microinjected into the PVN of salt-induced hypertensive rats to knockdown NKA α2, and we explored whether NKA α2 regulates downstream signaling pathways related to protein kinase C γ (PKC γ)-dependent oxidative stress and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-induced inflammation in the PVN to promote the development of hypertension. High salt diet increased NKA α1 and NKA α2 protein expression in the PVN but had no effect on NKA α3 compared to the normal salt diet. Na+/K+-ATPase activity and ADP/ATP ratio was lower, but NAD(P)H activity and NF-κB activity in the PVN were higher after a high salt diet. Bilateral PVN microinjection of NKA α2 shRNA not only improved Na+/K+-ATPase activity and ADP/ATP ratio but also suppressed PKC γ-dependent oxidative stress and TLR4-dependent inflammation in the PVN, thus decreasing sympathetic activity in rats with salt-induced hypertension. NKA α2 in the PVN elicits PKC γ/Rac1/NAD (P)H-dependent oxidative stress and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB-induced inflammation in the PVN, thus increasing MAP and sympathetic activity during the development of salt-induced hypertension.

Abstract
Background Whether smoking modifies the associations of diabetes and risk factor management with subsequent risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and whether the smoking related CVD risk differs among people with and without diabetes are unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations and interactions of smoking, diabetes, and risk factor management in relation to incident CVD. Methods This nationwide, population-based, prospective cohort study of 20 communities from various geographic regions recruited adults aged 40 years or older during 2011–2012. The follow-up survey was conducted between 2014 and 2016. This study included 126,181 participants who were free from CVD at baseline. Results Study participants included 19,397 current smokers (15.4%), 6,049 former smokers (4.8%), and 100,735 never smokers (79.8%). Mean (SD) age ranged from 55.8 (8.6) years to 60.7 (9.1) years. Compared with never smokers, heavy smokers exhibited a greater risk of CVD events among participants with diabetes (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.45; 95% CI, 1.17–1.78) than among participants without diabetes (HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01–1.42; P for interaction = 0.006). Compared with participants without diabetes, participants with diabetes who were never smokers and had 5 or more controlled risk factors showed no significantly excess CVD risk (HR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.71–1.22), but the cardiovascular benefits from risk factor management were counteracted among participants with diabetes who were current smokers (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 0.77–2.14) or former smokers (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.66–2.28). Conclusions Smoking and diabetes interacted with each other in relation to increased risk of CVD events, and the beneficial effect of risk factor management on CVD risk among participants with diabetes was attenuated by current or former smoking. Abstract
Purpose: To screen quality markers of Jie-Geng decoction (JGD) through multiple analytical methods and integration of network pharmacology and HPLC-ELSD fingerprint.
Methods: Network pharmacology was used to screen the potential bioactive components of JGD. Simultaneously, HPLC-ELSD fingerprint combined with multiple analytical methods was carried out for determination of the chemical compounds in JGD. Subsequently, quality markers for identification of quality variations in JGD were established through the integration of results from network pharmacology and fingerprinting, in combination with similarity analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA), and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA).
Results: A total of 110 compounds responsible for the regulation of 36 target genes in airway inflammation and cough were identified through network pharmacology. Furthermore, 37 characteristic components were obtained through fingerprints. Similarity analysis revealed that the main bioactive compounds in the various batches of JGD were similar. Also, HCA and OPLS-DA analyses were performed to identify the potential quality markers. Glycyrrhizic acid, liquiritin, and platycodin D were selected as quality markers, based on effectiveness, measurability, and distinguishability. Furthermore, quality variations in JGD arose mostly from variations in origin of gancao.
Conclusion: The screened quality markers for JGD are useful in evaluation of factors that affect the quality and variation in JGD. The concept of integration of network pharmacology and fingerprint with multiple analytical methods might be a novel strategy for quality control of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulations.

Abstract
Background The updated definition of hypertension by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) is an important paradigm shift and has lead to extensive discussion. We aimed to examine the association between the updated blood pressure (BP) categories and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) with potential modifications from other cardiovascular health metrics (CVHMs). Methods This prospective study included 91,204 participants ≥40 years recruited from 20 community sites across mainland China. Participants were followed up during 2010-2016 for CVD events including nonfatal myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, and cardiovascular death. BP categories were defined according to the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline and CVHMs included smoking, physical activity, diet, body-mass index, total cholesterol, and fasting glucose. Findings Overall, 1,985 major CVD events occurred during a mean follow-up of 3.7 years. Having more ideal CVHMs significantly reduced the risk of CVD events in both stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension. Compared with participants without hypertension, participants having ≥4 ideal CVHMs were no longer associated with an increased CVD risk in stage 1 hypertension (HR=1·04; 95% CI=0·83-1·31), but less so in stage 2 hypertension (HR=1·90, 95% CI=1·70-2·13). Such pattern of association was more evident in participants aged <60 years (P for interaction <0·05). Interpretation Stage 1 hypertension defined by the ACC/AHA identifies individuals at increased CVD risk, which can be attenuated by achieving more preferable cardiovascular health, especially in adults aged <60 years.

Abstract
Exercise (Ex) has long been recognized to produce beneficial effects on hypertension (HTN). This coupled with evidence of gut dysbiosis and an impaired gut-brain axis led us to hypothesize that reshaping of gut microbiota and improvement in impaired gut-brain axis would, in part, be associated with beneficial influence of exercise. Male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were randomized into sedentary, trained, and detrained groups. Trained rats underwent moderate-intensity exercise for 12 weeks, whereas, detrained groups underwent 8 weeks of moderate-intensity exercise followed by 4 weeks of detraining. Fecal microbiota, gut pathology, intestinal inflammation, and permeability, brain microglia and neuroinflammation were analyzed. We observed that exercise training resulted in a persistent decrease in systolic blood pressure in the SHR. This was associated with increase in microbial α diversity, altered β diversity, and enrichment of beneficial bacterial genera. Furthermore, decrease in the number of activated microglia, neuroinflammation in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, improved gut pathology, inflammation, and permeability were also observed in the SHR following exercise. Interestingly, short-term detraining did not abolish these exercise-mediated improvements. Finally, fecal microbiota transplantation from exercised SHR into sedentary SHR resulted in attenuated SBP and an improved gut-brain axis. These observations support our concept that an impaired gut-brain axis is linked to HTN and exercise ameliorates this impairment to induce antihypertensive effects.

Abstract
Background In early 2020, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented in China to reduce and contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. These NPIs might have also reduced the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Methods The weekly numbers of HFMD cases and meteorological factors in 31 provincial capital cities and municipalities in mainland China were obtained from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) and National Meteorological Information Center of China from 2016 to 2020. The NPI data were collected from local CDCs. The incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated for the entire year of 2020, and for January-July 2020 and August-December 2020. The expected case numbers were estimated using seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average models. The relationships between kindergarten closures and incidence of HFMD were quantified using a generalized additive model. The estimated associations from all cities were pooled using a multivariate meta-regression model. Findings Stringent NPIs were widely implemented for COVID-19 control from January to July 2020, and the IRRs for HFMD were less than 1 in all 31 cities, and less than 0·1 for 23 cities. Overall, the proportion of HFMD cases reduced by 52·9% (95% CI: 49·3-55·5%) after the implementation of kindergarten closures in 2020, and this effect was generally consistent across subgroups. Interpretation The decrease in HFMD incidence was strongly associated with the NPIs for COVID-19. HFMD epidemic peaks were either absent or delayed, and the final epidemic size was reduced. Kindergarten closure is an intervention to prevent HFMD outbreaks. Abstract
Background National investigations on age-specific modifiable risk factor profiles for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality are scarce in China, the country that is experiencing a huge cardiometabolic burden exacerbated by population ageing. Methods This is a nationwide prospective cohort study of 193,846 adults in the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study, 2011-2016. Among 139,925 participants free from CVD at baseline, we examined hazard ratios and population-attributable risk percentages (PAR%s) for CVD and all-cause mortality attributable to 12 modifiable socioeconomic, psychosocial, lifestyle, and metabolic risk factors by four age groups (40-<55 years, 55-<65 years, 65-<75 years, and ≥75 years). Findings Metabolic risk factors accounted for 52·4%, 47·2%, and 37·8% of the PAR% for CVD events in participants aged 40-<55 years, 55-<65 years, and 65-<75 years, respectively, with hypertension being the largest risk factor. While in participants aged ≥75 years, lifestyle risk factors contributed to 34·0% of the PAR% for CVD, with inappropriate sleep duration being the predominant risk factor. Most deaths were attributed to metabolic risk factors (PAR% 25·3%) and lifestyle risk factors (PAR% 24·6%) in participants aged 40-<55 years, with unhealthy diet and diabetes being the main risk factors. While in participants aged ≥55 years, most deaths were attributed to lifestyle risk factors (PAR% 26·6%-41·0%) and socioeconomic and psychosocial risk factors (PAR% 26·1%-27·7%). In participants aged ≥75 years, lifestyle risk factors accounted for 41·0% of the PAR% for mortality, with inappropriate sleep duration being the leading risk factor. Interpretation We identified age-specific modifiable risk profiles for CVD and all-cause mortality in Chinese adults, with remarkable differences between adults aged ≥75 years and their younger counterparts. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to clarify the association of soy intake with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study in a Chinese population composed of 97,930 participants aged ≥ 40 years old without CVD at baseline in 2011. Habitual soy intake over a period of 12 months was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire. All participants were classified into four groups based on their soy food consumption levels: < 15, 15-29, 30-59, and ≥ 60 g/day, with the lowest category as the reference group. Follow-up was conducted between 2014 and 2016 to assess CVD incidence and all-cause mortality since baseline, which was collected from the local mortality and disease registers of the National Disease Surveillance Point System and National Health Insurance System. The Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyze the relationship of soy intake with later CVD events and all-cause mortality. RESULTS During 350,604 person-years of follow-up (median [interquartile range]: 3.16 [2.98, 4.77] years), 2523 total CVD events and 1473 all-cause mortalities were documented. After controlling for covariates, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for total CVD events across increasing soy intake levels were 1.03 (0.93-1.14); 0.96 (0.86-1.07); and 0.86 (0.75-0.98; p for trend = 0.0434), while those for all-cause mortality were 0.88 (0.77-1.02); 0.86 (0.74-1.00); and 0.83 (0.69-0.99; p for trend = 0.0084). CONCLUSION High soy intake was associated with a reduced risk of total CVD events and all-cause mortality among a Chinese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Education attainment can improve life expectancy and guide healthy behaviours throughout an entire lifetime. A nationwide longitudinal study of the association of education status with the risk of hypertension and its control in China is lacking. METHODS The China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study is a multicentre, population-based, prospective cohort study. We performed the baseline survey from 2011 to 2012. A follow-up visit was conducted during 2014-2016. 101 959 subjects were included in the final data analyses. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to examine the associations of education levels with the risk of hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension. RESULTS During follow-up, 11 189 (19.9%) participants had developed hypertension among subjects without hypertension at baseline. Among the participants with hypertension at baseline, only 40.6% had controlled hypertension. Compared with the participants' education level at elementary school and below, the multivariable-adjusted HR for incident hypertension was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.72 to 0.80) in those with a middle school education level and 0.67 (95% CI, 0.63 to 0.70) in those with a high school degree or above. Correspondingly, multivariable-adjusted HRs associated with uncontrolled hypertension were 0.90 (95% CI, 0.87 to 0.92) in participants with a middle school education level and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.82 to 0.88) in participants with a high school degree or above level. CONCLUSION Participants with education attainment at elementary school and below exhibited excess risks of newly diagnosed hypertension and worse blood pressure control compared with individuals with education attainment at middle school or above.

Highly hydrophilic 2D-COFs, TFB-XX-DMTH, have been successfully constructed by a three-component in situ assembly strategy and exhibited superior photocatalytic performance in oxidative coupling reactions of benzylamines in aqueous solution.
