Abstract
Through a combination of aberration-corrected high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and three-dimensional atom probe tomography, the true atomic-scale structure and change in chemical composition across the complex order-disorder interface in a metallic alloy has been determined. The study reveals the presence of two interfacial widths, one corresponding to an order-disorder transition, and the other to the compositional transition across the interface, raising fundamental questions regarding the definition of the interfacial width in such systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To perform an audit of all smears reported as atypical glandular cells (AGC) using the Bethesda system (TBS) 2001. METHODS A total of 18 376 cervical smears were screened from January 2005 to June 2007, of which 65 cases were reported as AGC. Follow-up histology was available in 31 cases (47.7%), in whom a detailed cytological/histological correlation was carried out. RESULTS AGC constituted 0.35% of all Pap smears. Follow-up histology was normal or benign in 20 cases, whereas a squamous or glandular abnormality was seen in 11 cases. Squamous abnormalities included one case each of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1, CIN2 and CIN3 and five cases of squamous cell carcinoma. All glandular epithelial abnormalities were endometrial in origin and included two endometrial adenocarcinomas and one uterine serous carcinoma. Neither in situ nor invasive adenocarcinoma of the endocervix was observed. Review of smears and reclassification as AGC, not otherwise specified and favour neoplasia revealed a higher proportion of abnormality in the latter group, reaffirming the utility of subtyping. The median age of women with AGC was 41 years. The outcome was analysed with respect to the median age. In women aged equal or more than 40 years, AGC reflected a high-grade squamous or glandular epithelial abnormality in 50% of cases compared with none in those less than 40 years old (P = 0.010). CONCLUSION The age of the woman as well as the subtype of atypical glandular cells influences outcome and hence must be taken into consideration while formulating an acceptable management strategy in these women in a low-resource setting.

Abstract
The terminal groups in cystine are asymmetric and hence the dissulphide group with right and left chirality may not have equal energy. An attempt is made to resolve this problem through energy calculation using semi-empirical methods involving non-bonded and electrostatic interactions and simple Pauling type torsional potential for the disulphide group. The results are discussed in the light of experimental data.

Abstract
Genetic susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DRB1*1501 allele. Here we show a clear association between DRB1*1501 carrier status and four domains of disease severity in an investigation of genotype-phenotype associations in 505 robust, clinically well characterized MS patients evaluated cross-sectionally: (i) a reduction in the N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) concentration within normal appearing white matter (NAWM) via (1)HMR spectroscopy (P = 0.025), (ii) an increase in the volume of white matter (WM) lesions utilizing conventional anatomical MRI techniques (1,127 mm(3); P = 0.031), (iii) a reduction in normalized brain parenchymal volume (nBPV) (P = 0.023), and (iv) impairments in cognitive function as measured by the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT-3) performance (Mean Z Score: DRB1*1501+: 0.110 versus DRB1*1501-: 0.048; P = 0.004). In addition, DRB1*1501+ patients had significantly more women (74% versus 63%; P = 0.009) and a younger mean age at disease onset (32.4 years versus 34.3 years; P = 0.025). Our findings suggest that DRB1*1501 increases disease severity in MS by facilitating the development of more T2-foci, thereby increasing the potential for irreversible axonal compromise and subsequent neuronal degeneration, as suggested by the reduction of NAA concentrations in NAWM, ultimately leading to a decline in brain volume. These structural aberrations may explain the significant differences in cognitive performance observed between DRB1*1501 groups. The overall goal of a deep phenotypic approach to MS is to develop an array of meaningful biomarkers to monitor the course of the disease, predict future disease behaviour, determine when treatment is necessary, and perhaps to more effectively recommend an available therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
Hairy nightshade, Solanum sarrachoides, is a solanaceous weed found abundantly in Pacific Northwest potato ecosystems. It serves as a reservoir for one of the important potato viruses, Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) (Luteoviridae: Polerovirus), and its most important vector, the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae). Laboratory research indicated an increased green peach aphid settling and performance on S. sarrachoides than on potato. It also revealed that green peach aphids transmitted PLRV more efficiently from S. sarrachoides to potato than from potato to potato. To test the efficiency of S. sarrachoides as an inoculum source in the field, a two season (2004 and 2005) trial was conducted at Kimberly, Idaho. Two inoculum sources, PLRV-infected potato and PLRV-infected S. sarrachoides, were compared in this trial. Green peach aphid density and temporal and spatial PLRV spread were monitored at weekly intervals. Higher densities of green peach aphids were observed on plots with S. sarrachoides and inoculum sources (PLRV-infected S. sarrachoides and potato) than on plots without S. sarrachoides and inoculum sources. PLRV infection in plots with PLRV-infected S. sarrachoides was similar to or slightly higher than in plots with PLRV-infected potato as an inoculum source. Temporal and spatial PLRV spread was similar in plots with either inoculum source. Thus, S. sarrachoides is as efficient as or a better PLRV inoculum source than potato.

Abstract
Myiasis maggots were isolated from the cancerous wounds, when the patients reported to the Department of ENT-OPD, JIPMER, Pondicherry. Maggots were identified to Chrysomyia bezziana based on characteristic patterns of posterior and anterior spiracles. Although the categories of cancer wounds were different, invasions were due to C. bezziana, which is very common in suburban areas of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in southern parts of India. This observation showed the importance of hygiene and sanitation in tropical countries with high fly population and emphasised the need for correct diagnosis of this obligatory myiasis, which was destructive. Through proper health care, further destabilization due to myiasis was avoided.

Abstract
Intestinal maggots were isolated from a patient, who had reported to the Department of General Medicine of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, Puducherry, in southern India with complaints of abdominal distress, bloating of abdomen and intestinal hurry following a meal. He was diagnosed as a case of intestinal myiasis. Maggots obtained from his stool were identified to be Muscina stabulans based on characteristic patterns of posterior spiracles. He was treated with purgatives and albendazole. This intestinal myiasis case caused by M. stabulans is reported here because of its rare occurrence and the need to establish a correct diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the occurrence of uveitis in patients with prior history of dengue fever. METHODS A case series of patients with uveitis, presenting with ocular symptoms 3-5 months after contracting dengue fever during the dengue epidemic without any other attributable cause for uveitis. The dengue fever had subsided without any complication. None of the patients had any ocular complication during the acute dengue infection. They were treated on the lines of uveitis with local steroids, cycloplegic, and ocular hypotensive medications, when required, and oral steroid in case of posterior segment involvement. Patients' follow-up varied from 3-5 months. RESULTS Six patients with serological evidence of prior dengue fever had presented with uveitis not attributable to any other disease. Seven eyes of six patients were affected. Anterior uveitis without any evidence of posterior segment involvement was present in six eyes of five patients whereas one patient had severe vitritis also. The most common symptom was progressive decrease in vision and only three out of seven eyes had evidence of ciliary congestion. All patients promptly responded to the treatment and visual acuity returned to 6/9 or better in five eyes, while 6/24 and 6/18 in other two eyes due to the presence of cataract. None of these patients had recurrence during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION Uveitis in dengue infection is rare and ophthalmologists should be aware of these delayed ophthalmic complications. The prognosis of post-dengue uveitis is good.

Abstract
Advanced prostate cancer patients frequently deal with intractable prostatic bleeding which is a difficult problem to manage. Intraurethral high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy may palliate this condition. Advanced prostate cancer patients with intractable prostatic bleeding were offered brachytherapy with Iridium-192 using a Micro-selectron HDR machine. During a 5-year period, analysis was performed in 23 patients with a median age and Gleason score of 78 years and 9, respectively. Following brachytherapy, haematuria resolved in 19 of the 23 patients and was recurrence free at 6 months. Intraurethral HDR brachytherapy is a potentially effective modality for treating haematuria in patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Abstract
AIMS To ascertain the effect of a policy of early weighing on the detection and severity of neonatal hypernatraemic dehydration (NHD) and on breastfeeding rates in the short and medium term. METHODS A policy of weighing infants at 72-96 h was introduced from 1 July 2004. Two time periods were studied: pre-policy and post-policy (18 months each). Babies <28 days of age referred to hospital from the community who, on investigation, had plasma sodium concentrations of >145 mmol/l were identified. Age, plasma sodium concentration, percentage loss of body weight at presentation, breastfeeding rates at discharge and at 8 weeks, and complications due to hypernatraemia or its management were compared between the two groups. RESULTS 60 cases of NHD were identified: 23 before and 37 after introduction of the policy. After the policy, there was earlier recognition of NHD (median 3 vs 6 days), lower percentage weight loss (11% vs 15%), smaller increase in sodium (147 vs 150 mmol/l), and higher breastfeeding rate at discharge (73% vs 22%) and 8 weeks (57% vs 22%). All the differences were significant (p<0.01). There was one death in the pre-policy group, and none in the post-policy group. CONCLUSIONS Weighing babies early coupled with appropriate lactation support resulted in the early recognition of NHD, with less dehydration, less severe hypernatraemia, and higher breastfeeding rates in the short and medium term.

Abstract
A 41-year-old lady presented with classical symptoms of a phaeochromocytoma and markedly elevated urinary adrenaline concentration. Urinary fractionated metanephrine and normetanephrine concentrations were within the normal reference range. Computed tomography of the abdomen/pelvis and I123 meta-iodobenzylguanidine scans were negative. Factitious adrenaline use was established as the diagnosis.

Abstract
The Directorate of Public Health (DPH), Tamil Nadu, in southern India employed spraying of dichlorvos (76% EC) for quick elimination of fly concentrations in the tsunami-hit coastal villages at the concentration of 304g (a.i.)/10,000m(2). However, nuisance of house flies remained high particularly in temporary shelters and centralized relief kitchens. Susceptibility of house fly, Musca domestica to dichlorvos was determined in the laboratory to provide information for an effective management of this pest. Various concentrations of dichlorvos (76% EC) viz., 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8microg (a.i.) per fly, were tested using topical application against F(1) progenies of house flies collected 12 months after insecticide applications from different habitats in the tsunami-hit coastal villages. Fly mortality was recorded at 24h post treatment. Parallel controls were maintained for comparison. Mortality of the house flies varied between 17.5% and 100% and increased with an increase in dosage of the insecticide. Mortality was >80% at 0.6 and 0.8microg (a.i.) per fly. The LD(50) of dichlorvos tested against flies collected from different villages varied from 0.218microg (a.i.) to 0.235microg (a.i.) per fly and the LD(90) varied from 0.574microg (a.i.) to 0.639microg (a.i.) per fly. House flies collected from a rural village, Thirukanur that had never been exposed for insecticide treatment in the past one decade, when tested, the mortality varied between 92.5% and 100% and increased with concentration of dichlorvos. Mortality was >90% from 0.2microg (a.i.) per fly and the LD(50) was 0.0399microg (a.i.)/fly, while the LD(90) was 0.1604microg (a.i.)/fly. The LD(90) values of the flies collected from the tsunami-hit villages were 3.5-3.9 times higher than that of the flies collected from Thirukanur. Fly abundance remained high in tsunami-hit villages with no marked reduction, suggesting that the flies had developed tolerance to dichlorvos. It is suggested that for an effective management of these resistant populations changing insecticides, application of unrelated insecticide, together with an appropriate environmental sanitation measure is necessary to keep the population under check.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and its components of grains and solubles, the effect on amino acid digestibility of autoclaving DDGS with different proportions of wet grains:solubles, and the effect of several new processing technologies on the nutritional value of DDGS for poultry. In the latter experiments, corn was processed under laboratory conditions to produce ethanol and DDGS by using the conventional dry-grind process and compared with 2 modified dry-grind corn processes. Modified dry-grind corn processes consisted of wet quick germ, quick fiber (QGQF process) and dry degerm defiber (3D process) fractionation of corn to recover the germ and pericarp fiber prior to fermentation. In another process, a commercial DDGS sample was subjected to an Elusieve method to remove fiber and increase the protein content. Freeze-dried solubles were higher in total P but lower in CP than in the grains and DDGS. Digestibilities of several amino acids in the freeze-dried grains and solubles were higher than those for DDGS, particularly for Lys. Autoclaving reduced the digestibility of amino acids in DDGS, and this effect was not influenced by the proportion of grains:solubles. The QGQF and 3D processes increased the protein and reduced the fat and total dietary fiber content in DDGS. Total P was increased by the QGQF process, but was reduced by the 3D process. The Elusieve process increased the protein, amino acids, and fat, and decreased the total dietary fiber content of DDGS from 34.5 to 19.7% on a DM basis. None of the processing technologies had a significant effect on DDGS amino acid digestibility. The results of this study indicated that the nutritional value of DDGS can be influenced greatly by the proportion of grains vs. solubles and by processing technologies.

Abstract
Productivity of defective rainwater harvesting structures (RWHS) and other peridomestic habitats for dengue vector was assessed in a coastal town in Tamil Nadu, southern India, where dengue cases were reported. Of 31,709 houses, 792, 790, and 759 were surveyed during southwest monsoon, northeast monsoon, and summer season, and RWHS were found in 651, 638, and 544 houses, respectively. Of these RWHS, 23.3, 34.6 and 14.2% had defects; 20.7, 30.9, and 11.8% were holding water; and 6.5, 11.9, and 5.7% supported dengue vectors. Six types of RWHS, namely, open percolation pit, covered percolation pit, sealed percolation pit, rechargeable trench with bore, and structures connected to well in use or disuse were found. Number of female pupae of Aedes, i.e., pupal productivity obtained from RWHS ranged from 114 in summer to 1,174 in northeast monsoon, and open percolation pit contributed maximum (11.5%). The productivity of habitats other than RWHS varied from 635 in summer to 1,754 in northeast monsoon. Overall, the pupal productivity recorded from RWHS was 30.1% and in other habitats was 69.9%. A hierarchical cluster analysis showed three clusters of 23 types of habitats, which differed significantly in pupal production (F = 426.4, P < 0.05). Cluster I consists of 15 habitats, namely, disused well, RWHS-disused well, RWHS-used well, metal container, coconut shell, glass bottle, sealed percolation pit, used well, ornamental container, tree stump, defrost water collection tray, disposable cup, flower pot, broken toilet ware, and sun shade. Cluster II includes seven habitats, i.e., grinding stone, open percolation pit, covered percolation pit, cement tank, mud pot, plastic container, and rechargeable trench with bore, and cluster III includes automobile tire alone. Cluster II and III contributed to 80.1% of the total pupal production, whereas the remaining 19.9% by cluster I. The study showed that the defective RWHS, particularly open and covered percolation pits were found to be among the key containers, propagating Aedes population. The pupae per person obtained during northeast monsoon in different houses varied between 0.077 and 2.839 (average 0.864). House and Breteau Indices were relatively higher during northeast monsoon, whereas the Container Index was higher in southwest monsoon. In view of risk of dengue vectors propagation, the need for source reduction involving community and prioritizing control measures toward the highly productive water-holdings is discussed.

Abstract
Karnal bunt of wheat, caused by the fungus Tilletia indica, is an internationally regulated disease. Since its first detection in central Texas in 1997, regions in which the disease was detected have been under strict federal quarantine regulations resulting in significant economic losses. A study was conducted to determine the effect of weather factors on incidence of the disease since its first detection in Texas. Weather variables (temperature and rainfall amount and frequency) were collected and used as predictors in discriminant analysis for classifying bunt-positive and -negative fields using incidence data for 1997 and 2000 to 2003 in San Saba County. Rainfall amount and frequency were obtained from radar (Doppler radar) measurements. The three weather variables correctly classified 100% of the cases into bunt-positive or -negative fields during the specific period overlapping the stage of wheat susceptibility (boot to soft dough) in the region. A linear discriminant-function model then was developed for use in classification of new weather variables into the bunt occurrence groups (+ or -). The model was evaluated using weather data for 2004 to 2006 for San Saba area (central Texas), and data for 2001 and 2002 for Olney area (north-central Texas). The model correctly predicted bunt occurrence in all cases except for the year 2004. The model was also evaluated for site-specific prediction of the disease using radar rainfall data and in most cases provided similar results as the regional level evaluation. The humid thermal index (HTI) model (widely used for assessing risk of Karnal bunt) agreed with our model in all cases in the regional level evaluation, including the year 2004 for the San Saba area, except for the Olney area where it incorrectly predicted weather conditions in 2001 as unfavorable. The current model has a potential to be used in a spray advisory program in regulated wheat fields.

Abstract
Baseline susceptibility of legume pod borer (LPB) to the insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) from Bacillus thuringiensis, viz, Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac, Cry1Ca and Cry2Aa was assessed in Taiwan. Insect bioassays were performed by incorporating the Bt delta-endotoxins into the LPB artificial diet. The efficacy of different Bt delta-endotoxins against second instar larvae of LPB showed that the toxin Cry1Ab was the most potent toxin (LC(50) 0.207ppm), followed by Cry1Ca, Cry1Aa, Cry2Aa and Cry1Ac in descending order, with LC(50)s 0.477ppm, 0.812ppm, 1.058ppm and 1.666ppm, respectively. Hence, Cry1Ab and/or Cry1Ca toxins would provide effective control of early larval stages of LPB.

Abstract
The regulation of small artery contractility by vasoconstrictors is important for vascular function, and actin cytoskeleton remodeling is required for contraction. p38 MAPK and tyrosine kinases are implicated in actin polymerization and contraction through heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) and the cytoskeletal protein paxillin, respectively. We evaluated the roles of downstream targets of p38 MAPK and tyrosine kinases in cytoskeletal reorganization and contraction and whether the two signaling pathways regulate contraction independent of each other. We identified the expression of the paxillin homologue hydrogen peroxide-inducible clone-5 (Hic-5) and showed its activation by norepinephrine (NE) in a Src-dependent manner. Furthermore, we demonstrated a NE-induced interaction of proline-rich tyrosine kinase-2 (PYK2) but not Src or p125 focal adhesion kinase with Hic-5. This interaction was Src dependent, suggesting that Hic-5 was a substrate for PYK2 downstream from Src. The activation of Hic-5 induced its relocalization to the cytosol. The parallel activation of Hsp27 by NE was p38 MAPK dependent and led to its dissociation from actin filaments and translocation from membrane to cytosol and increased actin polymerization. Both Hsp27 and Hic-5 activation resulted in their association within the same time frame as NE-induced contraction, and the inhibition of either p38 MAPK or Src inhibited the interaction between Hsp27 and Hic-5 and the contractile response. Furthermore, combined p38 MAPK and Src inhibition had no greater effect on contraction than individual inhibition, suggesting that the two pathways act through a common mechanism. These data show that NE-induced activation and the association of Hsp27 and Hic-5 are required for the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and force development in small arteries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from metastatic carcinoma in liver may be difficult on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), especially when both appear as moderate to poorly differentiated tumours. A panel of immunocytochemical stains is frequently used in case of diagnostic difficulty. Recently, CD10 immunostain with a canalicular staining pattern has been shown to be a specific marker for hepatocytic differentiation. OBJECTIVE The present study was designed to assess the value of CD10 immunostain in distinguishing HCC from metastatic carcinoma in material obtained by FNAC of liver masses. MATERIALS AND METHODS Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded cell blocks of 22 cases (7 cases of HCC and 15 cases of metastatic carcinoma), direct acetone-fixed smears and destained smears of 28 cases (18 cases of HCC and 10 cases of metastatic carcinoma) prepared from FNAC of the liver were immunostained using monoclonal antibody against CD10. RESULTS Seventeen (68%) of twenty-five cases of HCC were positive for CD10 with a canalicular staining pattern. Among them 7 (70%) of 10 cases were well-differentiated HCC and 10 (66%) of 15 cases were moderate to poorly differentiated HCC. Of 25 cases of metastatic carcinoma, four (16%) were positive for CD10 with a cytoplasmic (three cases) and membranous staining (one case) pattern. CONCLUSION CD10 immunostaining is useful in discriminating HCC and metastatic carcinoma of the liver and is easily applied on cell blocks as well as FNAC smears.

Abstract
The antioxidant properties of three successive extracts of Caesalpinia digyna Rottler root and the isolated compound, bergenin, were tested using standard in vitro and in vivo models. The amount of the total phenolic compounds present was also determined. The successive methanol extract of Caesalpinia digyna root (CDM) exhibited strong scavenging effect on 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical cation, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The free radical scavenging effect of CDM was comparable with that of reference antioxidants. The CDM having the highest content of phenolic compounds and strong free radical scavenging effect when administered orally to male albino rats at 100, 200 and 400mg/kg body weight for 7 days, prior to carbontetrachloride (CCl(4)) treatment, caused a significant increase in the levels of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and significant decrease in the levels of lipidperoxidation (LPO) in serum, liver and kidney in a dose dependent manner, when compared to CCl(4) treated control. These results clearly indicate the strong antioxidant property of Caesalpinia digyna root. The study provides a proof for the ethnomedical claims and reported biological activities. The plant has, therefore, very good therapeutic potential.

Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are the first lymphocytes to recover after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) and can exert powerful graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects determining transplant outcome. Conditions governing NK cell alloreactivity and the role of NK recovery in sibling SCT are not well defined. NK cells on day 30 post-transplant (NK30) were measured in 54 SCT recipients with leukemia and donor and recipient killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genotype determined. In univariate analysis, donor KIR genes 2DL5A, 2DS1, 3DS1 (positive in 46%) and higher numbers of inhibitory donor KIR correlated with higher NK30 counts and were associated with improved transplant outcome. NK30 counts also correlated directly with the transplant CD34 cell dose and inversely with the CD3+ cell dose. In multivariate analysis, the NK30 emerged as the single independent determinant of transplant outcome. Patients with NK30 >150/microl had less relapse (HR 18.3, P=0.039), acute graft-versus-host disease (HR 3.2, P=0.03), non-relapse mortality (HR 10.7, P=0.028) and improved survival (HR 11.4, P=0.03). Results suggest that T cell-depleted SCT might be improved and the GVL effect enhanced by selecting donors with favorable KIR genotype, and by optimizing CD34 and CD3 doses.

Abstract
Several protein families with tandem repeat motifs play a very important role in plant development and defense. The pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein family, one of the largest families, is the most perplexing one in plants. PPR proteins have been implicated in many crucial functions broadly involving organelle biogenesis and plant development. PPR motifs are degenerate motifs, each with 35-amino-acid sequences and are present in tandem arrays of 2-27 repeats per protein. Although PPR proteins are found in other eukaryotes, their large number is probably required in plants to meet the specific needs of organellar gene expression. The repeats of PPR proteins form a superhelical structure to bind a specific ligand, probably a single-stranded RNA molecule, and modulate its expression. Functional studies on different PPR proteins have revealed their role in organellar RNA processing, fertility restoration in CMS plants, embryogenesis, and plant development. Functional genomic techniques can help identify the diverse roles of the PPR family of proteins in nucleus-organelle interaction and in plant development.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor beta (ERbeta) has five carboxyl-terminal (C-terminal) isoforms derived from alternative splicing. ERbeta1 is the wild-type receptor whereas ERbeta2/betacx lacks the activation function (AF)-2 core essential for ligand-dependent transcriptional activation and so behaves as a dominant-negative receptor affecting the function of ERalpha. The objective of this study was to analyze the expression of ERbeta1 and ERbeta2/betacx isoforms in nonneoplastic endometrium and endometrioid carcinoma. The study was conducted on samples of 22 proliferative endometrium, 15 secretory endometrium, 20 simple hyperplasia (without atypia), and 26 endometrioid carcinomas. The transcript and protein levels were determined by semiquantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, respectively. For the detection of ERbeta2/betacx protein, a polyclonal antibody was raised to its unique C-terminus, characterized, and used in immunohistochemistry. The two ERbeta isoforms are expressed in the proliferative and secretory phase endometrium with no significant change in their relative levels. The levels of the ERbeta1 isoform were lower as compared to the levels of ERbeta2 in all the groups studied. Expression of ERbeta2/betacx was decreased in endometrioid carcinoma as compared to proliferative endometrium (P < 0.01). A significant decrease of the ERbeta2/ERbetacx transcript was observed with higher grade tumors (P = 0.041). Progesterone receptor (PR) expression was not influenced by either of the ERbeta isoforms which was observed by logistic regression analysis in all the groups. The coexpression of ERbeta2/betacx with ERalpha did not affect PR levels (logistic regression analysis). Thus, we conclude in the human endometrium, there is significant ERbeta2/betacx isoform expression and alterations in its levels could be involved in endometrial cancer progression.

Abstract
Object A novel method of estimating metabolite T1 relaxation times using MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is proposed. As opposed to conventional single-voxel metabolite T1 estimation methods, this method investigates regional and gray matter (GM)/white matter (WM) differences in metabolite T1 by taking advantage of the spatial distribution information provided by MRSI. Material and methods The method, validated by Monte Carlo studies, involves a voxel averaging to preserve the GM/WM distribution, a non-linear least squares fit of the metabolite T1 and an estimation of its standard error by bootstrapping. It was applied in vivo to estimate the T1 of N-acetyl compounds (NAA), choline, creatine and myo-inositol in eight normal volunteers, at 1.5 T, using a short echo time 2D-MRSI slice located above the ventricles. Results WM-T1,NAA was significantly (P < 0.05) longer in anterior regions compared to posterior regions of the brain. The anterior region showed a trend of a longer WM T1 compared to GM for NAA, creatine and myo-Inositol. Lastly, accounting for the bootstrapped standard error estimate in a group mean T1 calculation yielded a more accurate T1 estimation. Conclusion The method successfully measured in vivo metabolite T1 using MRSI and can now be applied to diseased brain.

We conducted a two-stage, phase II trial of AZD 2171 in first line advanced RCC, with a planned sample size of 37 pts, and a primary endpoint of tumor control rate (PR+SD). Methods: Pts had progressive, unresectable, advanced RCC, measurable disease, a performance status of ≤ 2 and no prior cytokine or antiangiogenic therapy. Pts received AZD2171 45 mg orally, daily, continuously (1cycle = 4wks) as monotherapy. Disease was evaluated with cross-sectional imaging every 8 wks. Functional DCE-MRI imaging was performed at baseline, 24h and 28d after the first dose. Pharmacokinetic studies were performed on day 8, 15 and 28. Results: From January- November 2006, 24 pts median (range) age 62 (44–80), were entered on study. Sixteen pts evaluable for response, 7 too early; 23 pts evaluable for toxicity; 1 pt inevaluable due to withdrawal. There have been 6 confirmed PR (6/16=38%), 1 unconfirmed PR, 5 SD, 4 PD. Tumor control rate 12/16=75%. Seventeen patients remain on treatment, 6 now off due to PD and 1 off due to consent withdrawal. Eighteen patients had dose reductions due to toxicity. Most common toxicities (any grade) were fatigue (21pts), voice alteration (14pts), hypertension (12pts), diarrhea (15pts), and increased creatinine (10pts). Common (>5% of cycles) grade 3+ adverse events were hypertension (5pts), joint pain (4pts), fatigue (7pts), dyspnea (2pts), increased ALT (2pts) and anorexia (3pts). Preliminary pK analysis is available on 6 patients: median (range) Tmax: 2hr (2- 6hr), Cmax: 107.8± 29.8 ng/ml, T1/2: 12.1 ± 2.2hr. Conclusion: AZD2171 is an active agent in first line, progressive, unresectable, advanced RCC with a partial response rate of 38% and tumor control rates of 75%. Accrual is ongoing with pharmacokinetics, functional imaging, and correlative studies. This agent warrants further investigation. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
The practice of traditional medicine for the control of fertility in Nilgris is based on the use of plant medicine for many years. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of stem bark of Ailanthus excelsa Roxb (Simaroubaceae) (HEA) has been studied in rats to explore its antifertility activity. A strong antiimplantation (72%) and abortifacient activity (56%) was observed at the tested dose levels (200 and 400mg/kg, p.o.). The extract shows further more, significant (P<0.05) increase in uterine weight in immature ovariectomised rats. Simultaneous administration of extract with ethinyl estradiol cause significant antiestrogenic activity. All these observations suggest that hydroalcoholic extract of Ailanthus excelsa has antifertility effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urine cytomorphology is one of the oldest methods for screening and monitoring patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). Sensitivity of urine cytology is relatively low. Ancillary techniques on urine sample may increase the sensitivity. AIM To explore the utility of cytokeratin 20 (CK20) immunostaining in identifying malignant cells in urine cytology smears. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen cases each of confirmed TCC and benign urinary cytology along with five cases of atypical cells in urine were immunostained with a monoclonal CK20 antibody. Of 14 cases of TCC, 12 showed strong positive staining with the antibody. All benign cases were negative except for a few cases in which the umbrella cells were weakly to moderately positive. In all five cases of atypical urine cytology the atypical cells stained positive with the antibody. These cases were later confirmed as TCC on histopathology of bladder wall biopsy. CONCLUSION CK20 is an important biomarker that can be used to identify TCC in urine cytology smears. It is particularly useful in those cases where malignancy cannot be confirmed by morphology alone.

Abstract
Controlled release (CR) matrix tablets of naproxen sodium were prepared by wet granulation using hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC-K-100 CR) as the hydrophilic rate controlling polymer. The effect of the concentration of the polymer and different fillers on the in vitro drug release rate was studied. The studies indicated that the drug release can be modulated by varying the concentration of the polymer and the fillers. An optimized formulation subjected to accelerated stability studies for 3 months revealed that the developed CR tablets are stable. A complete cross-over bioavailability study of the optimized formulation of the developed CR tablets and marketed immediate release tablets was performed in 6 healthy male volunteers. The extent of absorption of drug from the CR tablets was significantly higher than that for the marketed naproxen sodium tablet due to lower elimination rate and longer half-life.

Abstract
Precision goniometry using optics has the advantage that it does not impose much stress on the object of investigation and, as such, is adopted extensively in gravitational wave detection, in torsion balances investigating fundamental forces, in specialized studies of biological samples, and it has potential applications in condensed matter physics. In this article we present the considerations that go into designing optical levers and discuss the performance of the instrument we have constructed. We motivate the design by considering an idealized setup and the limitations to the angular resolution induced by statistical fluctuations of the photon count rate and diffraction at the apertures. The effects of digitization of the count rate and of the spatial location of the photons on the image plane motivating the actual design are discussed next. Based on these considerations, we have developed an autocollimating optical lever which has a very high resolution and dynamic range. An array of 110 slits, of 90 microm width and a pitch of 182 microm, is located in the focal plane of a field lens, of focal length 1000 mm, and is illuminated by a CCFL tube. This array is imaged back onto the focal plane after retroreflection from a mirror placed just beyond the lens. The image is recorded on a linear charge-coupled device array at the rate of 1000 images/s and is processed through a special algorithm to obtain the centroid. The instrument has a centroid stability of approximately 3 x 10(-10) rad Hz(-1/2) and a dynamic range of approximately 10(7).
