Abstract
Striatal neuropathology of Huntington's disease (HD) involves primary and progressive degeneration of the medium-sized projection neurons, with relative sparing of the local circuit interneurons. The mechanism for such a patterned cell loss in the HD striatum continues to remain unclear. Optineurin (OPTN) is one of the proteins interacting with huntingtin and plays a protective role in several neurodegenerative disorders. To determine the cellular localization pattern of OPTN in the mouse striatum, we employed a highly sensitive immunohistochemistry with the tyramide signal amplification system. In this study, we show that OPTN appeared as a cytoplasmic protein within the subsets of the striatal neurons. Of particular interest was that OPTN was abundantly expressed in the interneurons, whereas low levels of OPTN were observed in the medium projection neurons. This cell type-specific distribution of OPTN in the striatum is strikingly complementary to the pattern of neuronal loss typically observed in the striatum of patients with HD. We suggest that OPTN abundance is an important cellular factor in considering the cell type-specific vulnerability of striatal neurons in HD.

A lateral transzygomatic-transtemporal approach to the infratemporal fossa: technical note for mobilization of the second and third branches of the trigeminal nerve. Skull Base Surg 2011; 9:277-87. Abstract
This report describes an alternative approach to the infratemporal fossa lesions through a lateral zygomato-temporal craniotemy, which modifies the extradural temporopolar technique for cavernous sinus surgery. First, an L-shaped osteotomy of the zygoma from the frontozygomatic suture attaching the zygomatre arch and low positioned temporal cramotomy are made. Through this zygomato-temporal craniotomy and orbitotemporal drilling, leaving the lateral orbital rim and orbital roof intact, skeletonization of the foramens rotundum and ovale are carried out. The key element of this infratemporal exposure is the dissection and mobilization of the trigeminal nerve, trigeminal second branch rostrally, and the third branch caudally, which facilitates a wide exposure of the infratemporal fossa with preserving trigeminal function. The corridor between the mobilized trigeminal branches provides direct access to the lateral and medial pterygoid plate, internal maxillary artery, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses, maxilla and, finally, the parapharyngeal area. Our experiences have demonstrated that this lateral transzygomatic-transtemporal exposure is satisfactory for use with infratemporal fossa tumors. This approach has an advantage for cranial-base exposure with decreased risks of cosmetic deformity and of trigeminal nerve dysfunction.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that the striosome-matrix systems have a tight link with motor and behavioral brain functions and their disorders. Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is a versatile protein kinase that plays a role in synaptic functions and cell survival in adult brain, and its kinase activity is stimulated by phosphorylation at tyrosine 15 residue (pY15). In this study, we used an immunohistochemical method to show differential localization of Cdk5-pY15 in the striatal compartments of adult mice, with a heightened density of Cdk5-pY15 labeling in the matrix relative to the striosomes. Our findings indicate that Cdk5-pY15 can be a new marker for the striatal matrix compartment, and suggest a possible involvement of Cdk5-mediated signaling in compartment-specific neurotransmission and disease pathology in the striatum.

Abstract
The neuron-specific isoform of the TAF1 gene (N-TAF1) is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of DYT3 dystonia, which leads to progressive neurodegeneration in the striatum. To determine the expression pattern of N-TAF1 transcripts, we developed a specific monoclonal antibody against the N-TAF1 protein. Here we show that in the rat brain, N-TAF1 protein appears as a nuclear protein within subsets of neurons in multiple brain regions. Of particular interest is that in the striatum, the nuclei possessing N-TAF1 protein are largely within medium spiny neurons, and they are distributed preferentially, though not exclusively, in the striosome compartment. The compartmental preference and cell type-selective distribution of N-TAF1 protein in the striatum are strikingly similar to the patterns of neuronal loss in the striatum of DYT3 patients. Our findings suggest that the distribution of N-TAF1 protein could represent a key molecular characteristic contributing to the pattern of striatal degeneration in DYT3 dystonia.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe have investigated the structural defects formed in Mg-doped GaN and AlGaN epitaxial layers grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. These defects have an inverse pyramidal shape and appear when the Mg concentration [Mg] is higher than ∼4×1019/cm3. The density of the defects increases as [Mg] increases, but the size of the defects becomes smaller as [Mg] increases. The density of the defects also has a strong correlation with the hydrogen concentration in the epitaxial layers. Transmission electron microscope analysis reveals that the defects have an inversion operation to the matrix and that their boundaries are Mg-rich. We also propose a model for defect formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify the differences in the baseline characteristics, prevalence and incidence of atherothrombosis in patients recruited from Asia versus non-Asian regions. DESIGN International Prospective Cohort Study. SETTING Region focused substudy. PATIENTS The Reduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health (REACH) Registry recruited 68 236 stable outpatients with established atherothrombosis or ≥3 atherothrombotic risk factors from 44 countries. INTERVENTIONS No intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Risk factors, use of medications, vascular disease bed location, and 1-year cardiovascular (CV) outcomes (CV death, myocardial infarction, stroke). RESULTS The percentages of patients recruited with CVD (Cerebrovascular Disease) were higher in Asia (41.0%) than in non-Asian regions (25.1%) (p<0.0001). The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was higher in Asia (46.6%) than in non-Asian regions (43.3%) (p<0.0001) despite the former having a lower body mass index (BMI) (24.4±3.9 vs 28.8±5.6) (p<0.0001). The combined endpoint of CV death/myocardial infarction/stroke of patients recruited from non-Asian regions of 4.38% (95% CI 4.20 to 4.56) is equivalent to those from the Asian region excluding Japan of 4.65% (95% CI 4.04 to 5.25), but that is significantly lower in patients recruited from Japan of 3.40% (95% CI 2.76 to 4.04, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS There is a higher prevalence of CVD and higher prevalence of diabetus mellitus with lower body mass index in patients recruited from the Asian region as compared those recruited from non-Asian regions. The CV event rate in patients recruited from non-Asian regions is equivalent to that of patients recruited from the Asian region excluding Japan, but significantly lower in patients recruited from Japan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plaque erosion is a cause of atherothrombosis that preferentially occurs on smooth muscle cell (SMC)- and proteoglycan-rich rather than lipid-rich plaques. However, its underlying mechanisms remain unknown. OBJECTIVE To determine whether disturbed blood flow induces erosive injury and thrombus formation on SMC-rich neointima. METHODS Three weeks after balloon injury, SMC-rich neointima with increased tissue factor (TF) activity developed in rabbit femoral arteries that were narrowed with a vascular occluder to disturb blood flow after stenosis. Neointimal injury and thrombus formation were assessed at 15, 30, and 180 min after the vascular narrowing. RESULTS Endothelial detachment, platelet adhesion and neointimal cell apoptosis became evident at the post-stenotic regions of all femoral arteries (n = 5) within 15 min of narrowing. Mural thrombi composed of platelet and fibrin developed after 30 min, and then occlusive thrombi were generated in three out of five vessels after 180 min. The identical vascular narrowing of normal femoral arteries also induced endothelial detachment with small platelet thrombi at post-stenotic regions, but fibrin and occlusive thrombi did not develop. Computational simulation analysis indicated that oscillatory shear stress contributes to the development of erosive damage to the neointima. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that disturbed post-stenotic blood flow can induce erosive injury in SMC-rich plaques and promote thrombus formation that results in vascular events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Poor blood pressure (BP) control is common amongst patients with symptomatic atherothrombotic disease. It is unclear whether BP control and management differ across atherothrombotic disease subtypes. METHODS We analysed the baseline data of 44,984 patients with documented coronary artery disease (CAD) only (n = 30,414), cerebrovascular disease (CVD) only (n = 11,359) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) only (n = 3211) from the international REduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health Registry and investigated the impact of atherothrombotic disease subtype on BP control and use of antihypertensive drugs. RESULTS The proportion of patients with BP controlled (<140/90 mmHg) was higher in CAD (58.1%) than in CVD (44.8%) or PAD (38.9%) patients (P < 0.001). Amongst patients with treated hypertension, CAD patients were more likely to have BP controlled than were CVD patients [odds ratio (OR) = 1.67; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.59-1.75] or PAD (OR = 2.30; 95% CI = 2.10-2.52). These differences were smaller in women than in men and decreased with age. Amongst treated patients, CAD patients were more likely to receive > or =3-drug combination therapies than were CVD (OR = 1.73; 95% CI = 1.64-1.83) or PAD (OR = 1.64; 95% CI = 1.49-1.80) patients. Adjustment for age, gender, waist obesity, diabetes, education level and world region did not alter the results. CONCLUSIONS Coronary artery disease patients are more likely than CVD or PAD patients to have BP controlled and to receive antihypertensive drugs, particularly combination therapies. Promotion of more effective BP control through combination antihypertensive therapies could improve secondary prevention and therefore prevent complications in CVD and PAD patients.
