Endometrial tissue concentrations of enrofloxacin after intrauterine administration to mares

Endometritis in mares is a common cause of infertility. Conventional treatments of the disease have mostly been unsuccessful, so new therapeutic alternatives need to be investigated. This study evaluated the uterine disposition and plasma pharmacokinetic behaviour of a commercial formulation of enrofloxacin (EFX) given by the intrauterine (i.u.) route (2.5 mg/kg) in healthy mares. In order to evaluate the uterine inflammatory response, an initial histopathological study assessing polymorphonuclear cell infiltration was carried out in 20 mares over a 14-day period after treatment. In a second study, 6 healthy adult mares were used for the pharmacokinetic study. Samples of uterine tissue and plasma were collected from 0 to 24 h after the i.u. treatment with 5% EFX solution. Samples were analysed by conventional microbiological assay using an EFX-sensitive strain of Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). There was a moderate but statistically nonsignificant inflammatory response following i.u. administration of either the formulation or the vehicle alone. Pharmacokinetic analysis of the uterine concentrations of EFX showed a slow and sustained depletion, with EFX remaining at concentrations above the MIC for 24 h after treatment. The area under the concentration-time curve obtained for the uterus suggested that EFX and its metabolites are specifically retained in the uterus, which is the target tissue for bacterial colonization. Neither study provided any evidence of EFX toxicity. In conclusion, these results are encouraging and suggest that EFX may be a useful local treatment in mares with bacterial endometritis.

A large outbreak of Shigella sonnei gastroenteritis associated with consumption of fresh pasteurised milk cheese

A large outbreak of Shigella sonnei gastroenteritis occurred in Murcia Region (Southeast Spain) in the winter of 1995-1996. More than 200 people were affected. Epidemiological investigations implicated a regionally manufactured fresh pasteurised milk cheese as the vehicle of infection. A case-control study showed a statistically significant association between the illness and consumption of the suspect cheese. The dispersed sale of the cheese resulted in a regional dissemination of the organism and people were affected in eight townships. Research suggested that an infected foodhandler at the cheese factory might have been the source of contamination and that the processing method might have allowed cross-contamination to occur. This study emphasises the importance of increasing the control of strict hygiene during the processing of fresh cheese, since legislation does not forbid direct contact by hand that could result in contamination of cheese even when the milk pasteurisation process was correctly performed.

[Viral quasispecies and their implications in antiviral therapy]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the quasispecies in the HVR1 region of the hepatitis C virus and treatment evolution in order to determine whether genetic complexity is predictive of response to interferon therapy. The samples were analyzed by nested RT-PCR-mediated single-strand conformation polymorphism assay (SSCP). Twelve patients with chronic hepatitis C were studied and divided into three groups: three patients with sustained response, three patients with transient response and six nonresponders. The patients in the sustained response group showed a low genetic complexity pattern. By contrast, in three nonresponders and in one patient with transient response, the SSCP assay revealed a high complexity pattern. With regard to the remaining patients with transient response, new SSCP bands appeared, thereby modifying their genetic complexity pattern. Therefore, nonresponse to interferon treatment could be related to the presence of a high genetic complexity pattern, while the detection of a low genetic complexity pattern is necessary for a positive response to interferon therapy. Due to the limited number of patients involved in this study, it was not possible to predict the response to interferon based on the genetic complexity pattern. Larger studies are therefore required.

Plasma achiral and chiral pharmacokinetic behaviour of intravenous oxfendazole co-administered with piperonyl butoxide in sheep

Co-administration of piperonyl butoxide (PB) potentiates fenbendazole (FBZ) in small ruminants. The resultant increase in bioavailability of FBZ and its metabolite oxfendazole (OFZ) has important implications for the efficacy of these drugs against benzimidazole (BZD)-resistant strains of Teladorsagia circumcincta. This study evaluated the racemic (achiral) and enantiomeric (chiral) plasma disposition kinetics of OFZ and its metabolites after the co-administration of PB and OFZ in sheep. Six 6-8-month-old, parasite-free, female Dorset sheep (30-40 kg) were used in a two-phase crossover experiment. In phase I, three sheep received 30 mg/kg PB orally, followed by a single intravenous (i.v.) injection of OFZ at 5 mg/kg. The other three animals were treated similarly except that 5 mL of water replaced PB. In phase 2, treatments for the two groups were reversed and were given 14 days after the initiation of phase I. Three analytes OFZ, FBZ and fenbendazole sulphone (FBZSO(2)) were recovered in plasma up to 48 h post-treatment in both experimental groups. Achiral and chiral pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles for OFZ, after the co-administration of PB, were characterized by a significantly greater area under the concentration--time curve (AUC) and a longer mean residence time (MRT). Chiral OFZ distribution ratios were comparable in both treatment groups. Piperonyl butoxide treatment markedly influenced the plasma PK profiles for FBZ and FBZSO(2) following OFZ administration. Production of FBZ was enhanced as reflected by increased (> 60%) AUC, delayed T(max) and a significantly delayed (> 45%) elimination (t(1/2)(el)). Although AUC values for FBZSO(2) were not significantly different between groups, this metabolite was depleted more slowly from plasma (t(1/2)(el) > 60% and MRT > 42%) following PB treatment. This study demonstrated that PB co-administration is associated with an inhibition of OFZ biotransformation, as evidenced by the significantly higher plasma concentrations of OFZ and FBZ, and this could have important implications in terms of anti-parasite therapy against BZD-resistant parasite strains.

Some comparative aspects of the pharmacokinetics of tylosin in buffaloes and cattle

The pharmacokinetics of tylosin were compared in cattle (Bos taurus) and buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Six animals received each a single dose of 10 mg/kg of tylosin tartrate by the intramuscular route. The serum concentration (Cmax) and the volume of distribution (Vd) presented significant differences between the two species. Cmax was 0.40 +/- 0.046 microg/ml for buffaloes and 0.64 +/- 0.068 microg/ml for cattle. Vd was 1.91 +/- 0.12 L/kg and 1.33 +/- 0.09 L/kg for buffaloes and cattle, respectively. However, as the present study did not show considerable differences in the pharmacokinetics of tylosin in buffaloes and cattle, similar dosage regimes of this drug can be recommended for both species.

Rapid purification and biochemical characterization of glucose kinase from Streptomyces peucetius var. caesius

Glucose kinase catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of glucose. Streptomyces peucetius var. caesius glucose kinase was purified 292-fold to homogeneity. The enzyme has cytosolic localization and is composed of four identical subunits, each of 31 kDa. The purified enzyme easily dissociates into dimers. However, in the presence of 100 mM glucose the enzyme maintains its tetrameric form. Maximum activity was found at 42 degrees C and pH 7.5. Isoelectric focusing of the enzyme showed a pl of 8.4. The N- and C-terminal amino acid sequences were MGLTIGVD and VYFAREPDPIM, respectively. The kinetic mechanism of S. peucetius var. caesius glucose kinase appears to be a rapid equilibrium ordered type, i.e., ordered addition of substrates to the enzyme, where the first substrate is d-glucose. The K(m) values for d-glucose and MgATP(2-) were 1.6 +/- 0.2 and 0.8 +/- 0.1 mM, respectively. Mg(2+) in excess of 10 mM inhibits enzyme activity.

Renal extracellular matrix alterations in lead-treated rats

Although the nephrotoxic effects of lead are well documented, the subcellular mechanisms of its action on the kidney remain unclear. The aim of the present work was to investigate the effects of chronic lead exposure on the expression of laminin-1 and fibronectin in the kidney of lead-treated rats. Western immunoblotting of the kidney extracts revealed that experimental exposure to lead resulted in a marked decrease in the intensity of the bands corresponding to laminin-1 and an increase in the intensity of the band corresponding to fibronectin. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated a weak labelling to laminin-1 and a strong labelling to fibronectin in all renal basement membranes together with a decrease in their thickness. Other ultrastructural alterations found were a diminution in the amount of endothelial fenestrae, an increased fusion of foot processes in epithelial cells of the glomerulus and the presence of intranuclear inclusion bodies in the proximal tubule cells. Lead intoxication might be responsible for the above alterations in the renal extracellular matrix that could play an important role in the pathogenesis of lead nephropathy.

Chronobiological variations of indomethacin pharmacokinetic parameters in sheep

A two-phase study to investigate the influence of administration time on pharmacokinetics of indomethacin in sheep was performed. In phase I, 12 animals were allocated to four groups, each corresponding to a different time: 08:00, 14:00, 20:00, 02:00 h. Sheep received an intravenous administration of 1 mg/kg indomethacin. In phase II, each group was administered indomethacin with a 12-h difference compared to Phase I. The trial was performed in autumn, and animals were subjected to a natural light:dark cycle of 10:14 h. Blood samples were taken and processed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detection. For each pharmacokinetic parameter, an analysis of variance was performed to outline the existence of chronobiological variations. Concentration at zero time (C0), hybrid constant for distribution and its half life, hybrid constant for elimination and its half-life, volume of distribution (V(d)), area under the curve (AUC(infinity)) and clearance rate (Cl), presented chronobiological variations (P < 0.05) and were fitted to a cosine equation. The following parameters adjusted to circadian rhythms: C(0) (acrophase: 13.9788 h); AUC(infinity) (acrophase: 13.4377 h); V(d) (acrophase: 0.8245 h) and Cl (acrophase: 1.4965 h). It was concluded that pharmacokinetic parameters of intravenously injected indomethacin in sheep would behave in a different, though predictable, manner according to the animal's biological clock.

Comparative in vitro bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity of trovafloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin against clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella spp

The susceptibility of 140 Legionella spp isolates (106 clinical and 34 environmental isolates) to trovafloxacin (TRFX), levofloxacin (LEVX), moxifloxacin (MOFX), ciprofloxacin (CIPX), ofloxacin (OFLX), erythromycin (ERY), azithromycin (AZI) and rifampicin (RIF) was studied using a standard microdilution method and buffered yeast extract broth (BYE) supplemented with 0.1% alpha-ketoglutarate. The post-antibiotic effects (PAEs) of the study drugs against 10 clinical isolates of Legionella pneumophila sg.1 were compared. The MIC inhibiting 90% of strains tested on BYEalpha broth were 0.008, 0.016, 0.016, 0.06, 0.125, 0.5, 0.5, and 0.004 mg/l for TRFX, LEVX, MOXX, CIP, OFLX, ERY, AZI, and RIF, respectively. The MBC/MIC ratios ranged from one to eight depending on the antibiotic tested: TRFX [1x-2 x MIC], LEVX, MOFX, CIPX and OFLX [1x-4 x MIC], RIF [2x-4 x MIC], ERY and AZI [2x-8 x MIC]. TRFX, RIF, LEVX, MOFX, CIPX, OFLX, ERY and AZI showed similar activity against Legionella species other than L. pneumophila. One-hour exposures to the study antimicrobial agents at a concentration of 4 x MIC resulted in PAEs as follows (average in hours): TRFX: 2.68 h; RIF: 2.63 h; CIPX: 2.62 h; MOFX: 2.56 h; LEVX: 2.41 h; OFLX: 2.25 h; AZI: 1.65 h; and ERY: 1.54 h. In conclusion, our in vitro data confirm that trovafloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin and rifampicin have excellent bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Legionella spp and show significant post-antibiotic effect.

[Splenectomy in a patient with beta thalassemia intermedia and severe hemolytic anemia]

A 36-year-old woman with beta thalassemia intermedia suffered a hemolytic crisis secondary to Epstein-Barr virus infection. She was given a transfusion of phenotypically compatible blood. However, severe hemolysis persisted (with hemoglobin levels around 4 g/dl) in spite of gamma globulin and corticosteroid administration. Emergency therapeutic splenectomy was performed. We discuss intraoperative management in situations of severe anemia, concluding that it is possible to survive significant decreases in hemoglobin concentration with cardiocirculatory reserve and respiration intact, maintaining normal volume.

Evaluation of cross-reactive antigens as determinants of cross-bactericidal activity in pathogenic and commensal Neisseria

Several antisera raised against outer membane vesicles obtained from invasive and carrier Neisseria meningitidis strains and commensal Neisseria and Moraxella catharralis species were assayed to test cross-bactericidal activity on Neisseria meningitidis strains. Results demonstrate that, despite the wide antigenic cross-reactivity previously shown by Western-blotting for the major outer membrane antigenic proteins of all Neisseria species, complement mediated killing shows very variable patterns that can not be predicted on the basis of antigenic cross-reactivity. Results of antibody tritations on homologous and heterologous strains, isotyping, and bactericidal activity of sera raised against denatured purified outer-membrane vesicle proteins, suggest that the responsibility for most of the bactericidal activity of the sera must be conformational and/or shared epitopes not detectable by Western-blotting.

Analysis of the expression of the putatively virulence-associated neisserial protein RmpM (class 4) in commensal Neisseria and Moraxella catarrhalis strains

The RmpM protein has been reported to be present only in pathogenic Neisseria species. In the present study we demonstrate that this protein is also present at least in N. lactamica and N. sicca strains. The N. lactamica protein reacts with a RmpM-specific monoclonal antibody (185,H-8), having a molecular mass ( approximately 31 kDa) slightly lower than that of the meningococcal RmpM, and mouse antibodies from sera against outer membrane vesicles from both N. lactamica and N. sicca strains cross-react with the meningococcal RmpM. PCR and hybridization experiments with a complete rmpM probe agree with the immunodetection experiments. Our results strongly suggest that the meningococcal RmpM should not be considered a virulence marker, and the presence of this protein in the commensal species agrees with its role as a structural protein, proposed for the RmpM, which should be considerably conserved in the Neisseria species.

Albendazole sulphoxide enantiomeric ratios in plasma and target tissues after intravenous administration of ricobendazole to cattle

The comparative concentration profiles of the (+) and (-) albendazole sulphoxide (ABZSO) enantiomers obtained in plasma and in selected target tissues/fluids after intravenous (i.v.) administration of a racemic formulation of ricobendazole (RBZ) to cattle were characterised. Fourteen Holstein calves received RBZ (racemic solution, 150 mg/mL) by i.v. administration at 7.5 mg/kg. Jugular blood samples were collected over 48 h post-treatment (plasma kinetic trial) and two animals were sacrificed at either 4, 12, 20, 28 or 32 h post-treatment to obtain samples of abomasal/small intestine mucosal tissue, abomasal/small intestine fluids, bile, liver and lung tissue (tissue distribution study). The (-)ABZSO enantiomer was depleted significantly faster from plasma compared with the (+)ABZSO antipode. The plasma AUC for (+)ABZSO (38.3 microg. h/mL) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) compared with that obtained for (-)ABZSO (20.5 microg. h/mL). The (+)ABZSO enantiomer was the predominant antipode measured in bile, abomasal fluid and abomasal mucosa. For instance, at 12 h post-treatment the (+)/(-) concentration ratios were: 12.9 (plasma), 1.62 (abomasal mucosa), 13.0 (abomasal fluid), 2.92 (intestinal mucosa), 9.87 (intestinal fluid) and 21.5 (bile). No marked differences between the concentration profiles of both enantiomers were observed in the liver tissue. Albendazole (ABZ) was recovered from the liver, lung and gastrointestinal (GI) mucosal tissues of RBZ-treated calves up to 32 h post-treatment, probably produced by a GI microflora-mediated sulphoreduction of RBZ. An enantioselective kinetic behaviour may account both for the faster depletion of the (-) enantiomer and for the higher availabilities of the (+) antipode observed in plasma and in most of the tissues/fluids investigated. The simultaneous evaluation of the plasma kinetics and tissue concentration profiles of both enantiomeric forms reported here, may help to interpret the relationship between chiral behaviour and pharmacological action for sulphoxide derivatives of benzimidazole (BZD) methylcarbamate anthelmintics.

Citrate, a possible precursor of astaxanthin in Phaffia rhodozyma: influence of varying levels of ammonium, phosphate and citrate in a chemically defined medium

The influence of ammonium, phosphate and citrate on astaxanthin production by the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma was investigated. The astaxanthin content in cells and the final astaxanthin concentration increased upon reduction of ammonium from 61 mM to 12.9 mM (from 140 microg/g to 230 microg/g and 1.2 microg/ml to 2.3 microg/ml, respectively). Similarly, both the astaxanthin content and astaxanthin concentration increased by reducing phosphate from 4.8 mM to 0.65 mM (160 microg/g to 215 microg/g and 1.7 microg/ml to 2.4 microg/ml, respectively). Low concentrations of ammonium or phosphate also increased the fatty acid content in cells. By analogy with lipid synthesis in other oleaginous yeasts, an examination of the data for varying nitrogen and phosphate levels suggested that citrate could be the source of carbon for fatty acids and carotenoid synthesis. Supporting this possibility was the fact that supplementation of citrate in the medium at levels of 28 mM or higher notably increased the final pigment concentration and pigment content in cells. Increased carotenoid synthesis at low ammonium or phosphate levels, and stimulation by citrate were both paralleled by decreased protein synthesis. This suggested that restriction of protein synthesis could play an important role in carotenoid synthesis by P. rhodozyma.

Purification and characterization of an extracellular lipase from Penicillium candidum

Penicillium candidum produces and secretes a single extracellular lipase with a monomer molecular weight of 29 kDa. However, this enzyme forms dimers and higher molecular weight aggregates under nondenaturing conditions. The lipase from P. candidum was purified 37-fold using Octyl-Sepharose CL-4B and DEAE-Sephadex columns. The optimal assay conditions for lipase activity were 35 degrees C and pH 9. The lipase was stable in the pH range of 5-6 with a pl of 5.5, but rapid loss of the enzyme activity was observed above 25 degrees C. Tributyrin was found to be the best substrate for the P. candidum lipase, among those tested. Metal ions such as Fe2+ and Cu2+ inhibited enzymatic activity and only Ca2+ was able to slightly enhance lipase activity. Ionic detergents inhibited the activity of the enzyme, whereas nonionic detergents stimulated lipase activity.

Plasma endothelin-1 levels after stem cell transplantation

Acute renal failure and veno-occlusive disease of the liver are serious complications following stem cell transplantation (SCT) and contribute to the non-relapse mortality associated with this procedure. Endothelins, a family of vasoconstrictor peptides, may be involved in the pathogenesis of a variety of renal and hepatic diseases, including CsA-associated hypertension and the hepatorenal syndrome. In order to study the relevance of endothelins to SCT-related liver and kidney dysfunction, we determined endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in plasma samples obtained from 65 patients (38 autologous, 27 allogeneic) 7 days before and 7, 14 and 28 days after SCT. A steady increase in plasma ET-1 was observed after SCT (5.36 pg/ml, 95% CI 4.30-6.43 on day +28 vs 3.82 pg/ml, 95% CI 3.21-4.43 on day -7; P = 0.020). No differences in ET-1 levels existed between autologous and allogeneic SCT recipients at any of the time points studied (P = 0.561). In addition, no significant differences were observed among patients with renal dysfunction vs those without (P = 0.187), nor in patient groups with or without hepatic dysfunction (P = 0.075). In conclusion, even though plasma ET-1 levels showed a steady increase following SCT, no correlation could be found with development of SCT-related kidney or liver dysfunction.

[Pharmacovigilance study of azithromycin tablets (500 mg) in the treatment of adult patients with respiratory tract infections]

Our aim was to study a new form of azithromycin (500 mg tablets) in order to evaluate the tolerability and the influence of the ingestion of food on tolerability, the efficacy and treatment compliance in a large number of patients with respiratory tract infections. We carried out an open, non-comparative, multicenter, observational and prospective pharmacovigilance study of 3223 outpatients with respiratory tract infections randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of azithromycin for three months taken either during or outside meals. Patients were evaluated during an initial visit and two later ones in order to record the adverse events and establish the clinical efficacy. The diagnostics were as follows: pharyngotonsillitis (1200), acute otitis media (394), acute bronchitis (1134), exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (436), and community-acquired pneumonia (53). The overall therapeutic efficacy was satisfactory (cure or improvement) in 96% to 97% at the second visit and in 93% to 94% in the third (pharyngotonsillitis, 93%; acute otitis media, 91%; acute bronchitis, 94%; exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, 94%; and community-acquired pneumonia, 96%). A total of 170 adverse events were reported in 141 patients (4.4%); 12 were severe yet not related to the study medication. Eighty-eight patients showed adverse events presumed to be related to azithromycin; most were in the digestive tract. No differences in tolerability were observed in relation to food intake. Treatment compliance was high (97%). The elevated clinical efficacy, adequate compliance and the excellent tolerability profile of azithromycin tablets make them a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of respiratory tract infections.

Costs of infant-carrying in the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus)

Infant-carrying behavior among callitrichids seems to be a costly activity. Costs have been related to the physical efforts of carrying the weight of very heavy infants and to the resulting reduction in foraging efficiency. However, the costs of carrying in terms of the physical consequences for carriers have not previously been assessed. In this study, we have regarded weight loss in infant carriers as a measure of costs. We studied five families of cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) during the first 9 weeks following the birth of infants. Captive-breeding conditions were required so that body weight could be measured frequently. To avoid inflicting undue stress on the subject animals, we used a noninvasive method for weighing the tamarins. Differences in carrying contribution were found amongst fathers and male and female helpers, with female helpers contributing less. We have found that carrying infants in the cotton-top tamarins is an activity that produces a weight loss. Fathers and male helpers go through a maximal body weight loss. While carrying, the tamarins also decrease food intake. However, no relationship was found between contribution to carrying and feeding time or in energetic intake during feeding observations. Thus, it seems that a direct relation doesn't exist between the observations of feeding and weight loss. Fathers increase their contribution to carrying during mothers' periovulatory periods. In this period, male helpers and especially fathers go through a maximal body weight loss. We found body weight losses of up to 11.3% in one subadult male and 9.1% in a father during the fifth week. No changes occurred in food intake in fathers or other male helpers during this period. During periovulatory periods, mothers carried less frequently but did increase their food intake. They gained weight from the second week after birth onward, especially during the periovulatory period. It seems that the infant-carrying behavior of fathers and male helpers may contribute to the improvement of the mothers' physical condition after birth and therefore may support a consecutive pregnancy.

Enhanced plasma and target tissue availabilities of albendazole and albendazole sulphoxide in fasted calves: evaluation of different fasting intervals

The influence of different pre- and post-treatment fasting periods on the plasma availability and disposition kinetics of albendazole (ABZ) and its sulphoxide metabolite (ABZSO) in cattle was investigated. The effect of fasting on the distribution of ABZ and ABZSO to different target tissues/fluids was also characterised. In Experiment I, 35 parasite-free Holstein calves were divided into seven groups according to the following feeding conditions and treated intraruminally with ABZ (10 mg/kg): control group (fed ad libitum), 24 h fasting either prior to (24 h pre-) or post (24 h post-) treatment, 24 h fasting with either 6 (6 h pre + 18 h post) or 12 h (12 h pre + 12 h post-) of feed restriction prior to treatment, 12 h fasting either prior to (12 h pre-) or post (12 h post) treatment. In Experiment II, calves from the same pool of animals were subjected to a 24 h fasting period prior to the same ABZ treatment and killed (two animals) at either 24, 36 or 48 h post-administration to obtain samples of abomasal/intestinal mucosa and fluid contents, bile and lungs. Plasma (Experiment I) and tissues/fluids (Experiment II) samples were analysed by HPLC. All the fasting periods investigated induced marked changes to the plasma availability and disposition kinetics of the ABZSO metabolite. Enhanced plasma availability between 37 and 118%, delayed peak concentrations and extended mean residence times for ABZSO were observed in fasted compared to fed calves. The changes in plasma kinetics, reflecting an altered quantitative gastrointestinal absorption, were reflected in increased availability of ABZ and ABZSO in the target tissues/fluids of fasted calves. The availabilities of ABZ and ABZSO in the gastrointestinal mucosa and fluids in fasted calves were markedly greater than in those fed ad libitum.

Biomass production and biochemical variability of the marine microalga Isochrysis galbana in relation to culture medium

We have studied the autotrophic growth of the marine microalga, Isochrysis galbana Parke, in a batch photobioreactor, comparing five different culture media and analysing the influence of each on growth kinetics as well as on the fatty-acid composition and protein content of the biomass. All the experiments were performed at 15 degrees C, with the culture medium at pH 8.0, a specific rate of air supply of 1vv(-1)min(-1) and a continuous illumination of 40-43Wm(-2). The results show no parallel between good nutritional characteristics and high values of the kinetic parameters. Nevertheless, a compromise between the nutritional factors and growth kinetics could be provided by Ukeles medium, which provided a biomass with a good composition in polyunsaturated fatty acids (quotient n3/n6=3.2), an adequate protein content (25.3%) and relatively high values, although not the highest registered, for maximum specific growth rate (µ(m)=0.018h(-1)) and biomass productivity (1.9x10(-3)kgm(-3)h(-1)).
