Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp; collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W' boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. In a model where this boson would mediate interactions involving a massive right-handed neutrino (nu(R)) and have standard model strength couplings, we use these data to exclude a W' boson with mass between 225 and 536 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')>>M(nu(R)) and between 225 and 566 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')<M(nu(R)).

Threshold levels of urinary cadmium in relation to increases in urinary beta2-microglobulin among general Japanese populations. Toxicol Lett 2003; 137:135-41. Abstract
Through literature survey, paired data on cadmium (Cd) and beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)-MG) levels (as corrected for creatinine concentration) in urine (i.e., Cd-Ucr and beta(2)-MG-Ucr) among Japanese populations were available for 32 groups of men and 58 groups of women in 12 publications. Plotting of the Cd-Ucr and beta(2)-MG-Ucr data for the groups of women showed that beta(2)-MG-Ucr stayed unchanged when Cd-Ucr was at lower levels, whereas beta(2)-MG-Ucr increased sharply when Cd-Ucr was in excess of 10-20 microg/g cr. Regression analysis was made for groups of women with no elevation in beta(2)-MG-Ucr, and those with >400 or >1000 microg beta(2)-MG-U/g cr. A threshold Cd-Ucr level in relation to an increase in beta(2)-MG-Ucr was estimated as Cd-Ucr at the point of intercept of the two regression lines, one with no beta(2)-MG-Ucr elevation, and the other with >400 or >1000 microg beta(2)-MG-U/g cr. Cd-Ucr at the point of flexion thus calculated was 11-12 microg/g cr. Such observation was quantitatively reproduced by the analysis of data for men, giving 10-11 microg Cd-U/g cr at the point of flexion. This study suggests that the relationship of beta(2)-MG-Ucr with Cd-Ucr is not linear but in the shape of letter 'J', i.e., beta(2)-MG-Ucr increases sharply when Cd-Ucr is in excess of 10-12 microg/g cr.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) was coated onto titanium substrates using radio frequency sputtering, and the coated HA films were crystallized in an autoclave at 110 degrees C using a low temperature hydrothermal method. The crystallite size, the Ca/P ratio, and the surface of the films were observed using XRD, EDS, and SEM, respectively. An immersion test was carried out in physiological saline solution, and the film-to-substrate adhesion strength was measured using a pull-out test. From the XRD patterns, a sputtered film subjected to the hydrothermal treatment had crystallized after 24 h, and the crystallite size increased from 38.0+/-8.7 to 81.4+/-19.1 nm. In immersion tests, an as-sputtered film completely dissolved after 1 d, whereas a sputtered film subjected to the hydrothermal treatment survived to 18.7+/-5.8% of the initial film thickness after four weeks. In pull-out tests, the adhesion strength of the sputtered film to the substrate increased from 1.9+/-0.2 to 5.3+/-1.6 MPa after the hydrothermal treatment. A sputtered film subjected to the hydrothermal treatment and a plasma-sprayed coating on titanium columns were implanted in the diaphysis of the femora of six adult dogs, and a pull-out test was carried out after two, four, and 12 weeks. The sputtered film showed higher bone bonding strength than the plasma-sprayed coating at any period.

Abstract
To reduce cellular damage by pronuclear microinjection and nuclear transfer, we have recently developed a vibratory microinjection method. A micropipette was fixed to a piezoelectric ceramic with a resonance frequency of 70 kHz. When this micropipette was vibrated, it easily entered a mouse-fertilized egg without any sharp depression of the cell body, whereas a sharp, deep depression at the insertion site was observed when the micropipette was not vibrated. A depression rate defined as a rate of a depth of depression over an original cell diameter was utilized as an index of cellular deformation. The depression rates with and without vibration were 11.1 +/- 5.2% (N = 24) and 40.4 +/- 8.8% (N = 16), respectively (P < 0.0001, Student's t-test). In conclusion, the vibratory microinjection method is a new, useful option for gene transfer because it resulted in much less cellular deformation, therefore implicating less cellular damage.

Abstract
To evaluate the deterioration in the superelasticity of Ti-coated NiTi orthodontic wires, titanium was coated onto wires to form a 1-microm thick film using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. In superelasticity cycle tests, the sigma5.0 value (the stress at 5.0% strain) of a Ti-coated wire was lower than that of a non-coated wire by 6.2% after one cycle, and by 10.4% after 20 cycles. In a three point bend tests, the L2.0 value (the load at 2.0 mm deflection) of a Ti-coated wire was 2.55 N, and this was reduced by 39.0% of the L2.0 value of a non-coated wire (4.18 N). After the non-coated and the Ti-coated wires had been immersed in physiological saline for periods of four and eight weeks, the concentration of Ni ions released into each solution was detected using MIP-Mass, and Ni peak intensity of the wires was measured using XPS. After eight weeks, the concentration of Ni ions released from the non-coated and the Ti-coated wires was 657 and 135 ppb, respectively. In a clinical test, no inflammation was observed during the entire attached period of four weeks in both the non-coated and the Ti-coated wire. In the Ti-coated wire, little exfoliation of the Ti-coating was observed using SEM and EDS. It was concluded that Ti-coated NiTi orthodontic wire has much potential for its application, with a low probability of causing any Ni allergy.

Abstract
The exclusive gammaE(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at square root [s]=1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M(D) of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.

Abstract
AIM Resistin has been suggested to link obesity to diabetes by antagonizing insulin action. However, this model is based on limited observations and how resistin links the two complex processes is not known. In this study, we investigated the effects of various factors on the expression of resistin and examined the generality of the proposal. METHODS Total RNA was isolated from the adipose tissues of lean, obese and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)alpha-null mice fed a control diet or that contained a PPAR ligand, and analysed by Northern blotting using cDNAs for resistin, leptin, aP2 and other mRNAs as probes. For quantitative analysis, an image analyser was used. RESULTS Basal expression of resistin mRNA was suppressed by obesity, but the extent of suppression differed significantly among the mouse strains and types of adipose tissue examined. Anti-diabetic thiazolidinediones induced resistin expression in the lean mice and showed smaller effects in obese mice. Furthermore, PPARalpha was shown to play an important role in constitutive expression of resistin in the adipose tissue. CONCLUSION Our results indicated that diverse factors modulate the expression of resistin in the adipose tissues of mice, and suggested that resistin is not a master hormone linking obesity to diabetes.

Abstract
We present the results of a search in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon and a lepton (e or mu), both with large transverse energy, using 86 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E(T)), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E(T), for which the observed total is 16 events and the expected mean total is 7.6+/-0.7 events.

Abstract
We report on measurements of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) differential cross sections (d(2)sigma/dp(T)dy)(/y/<0.4), as well as on the Upsilon(1S) polarization in p p macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using a sample of 77+/-3 pb(-1) collected by the collider detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay Upsilon-->mu(+)mu(-). The measured angular distribution of the muons in the Upsilon(1S) rest frame is consistent with unpolarized meson production.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function F(D)(jj) of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV to F(D)(jj) obtained from a similar measurement at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and other theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the xi ( x-Pomeron) and beta ( x of parton in Pomeron) dependence of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. In the region 0.035<xi<0.095, /t/<1 GeV2, and beta<0.5, F(D)(jj)(beta,xi) is found to be of the form beta(-1.0+/-0.1)xi(-0.9+/-0.1), which obeys beta-xi factorization.

Abstract
We determined the complete nucleotide sequence of Aconitum latent virus (AcLV-D) isolated from Delphinium sp. The genomic RNA of AcLV-D is 8,657 nucleotides in length, excluding the poly (A) tail. Based on computer analysis, six open reading frames (ORFs) were identified as for other carlaviruses. Although each ORF differs from those of previously reported carlaviruses, the coat protein of AcLV and Potato virus M (PVM) shows a high level of identity. The results suggest that AcLV is a distinct carlavirus species but closely related to PVM.

Search for new heavy particles in the WZ0 final state in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:071806. Abstract
We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.

Abstract
We report a study of the decays B0 --> J/psiK(*)0pi(+)pi(-), which involve the creation of a uu or dd quark pair in addition to a b -->c(cs) decay. The data sample consists of 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching fractions to be B(B0 --> J/psiK(*0)pi(+)pi(-)) = (6.6 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(B0 --> J/psiK0pi(+)pi(-)) = (10.3 +/- 3.3 +/- 1.5)x10(-4). Evidence is seen for contributions from psi(2S)K(*)0, J/psiK0rho(0), J/psiK(*+)pi(-), and J/psiK1(1270).

Abstract
We have performed a search for gluinos (g) and scalar quarks (q) in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and three or more jets, a characteristic signature in R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models. The analysis has been performed "blind," in that the inspection of the signal region is made only after the predictions from standard model backgrounds have been calculated. Comparing the data with predictions of constrained supersymmetric models, we exclude gluino masses below 195 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.), independent of the squark mass. For the case m(q) approximately m(g), gluino masses below 300 GeV/c2 are excluded.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, alpha(s)(MZ), extracted from inclusive jet production in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of alpha(s) with jet transverse energy ET is tested over the range 40<ET<450 GeV using ET for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. The value of alpha(s) at the mass of the Z0 boson averaged over the range 40<ET<250 GeV is found to be alpha(s)(MZ) = 0.1178+/-0.0001(stat)+0.0081(-0.0095)(expt. syst). The associated theoretical uncertainties are mainly due to the choice of renormalization scale ((+6%)(-4%)) and input parton distribution functions (5%).

Abstract
The orange to blue coloration of flowers in nature is, in most cases, provided by anthocyanins, a class of plant flavonoids, many of which are modified by malonyl group(s). However, the identity of the enzyme catalyzing the malonylation reaction remains to be established. Here, we describe for the first time the purification, characterization, and cDNA cloning of an anthocyanin malonyltransferase from scarlet sage (Salvia splendens) flowers. The purified enzyme (termed Ss5MaT1) was a monomeric 50-kDa protein catalyzing the regiospecific transfer of the malonyl group from malonyl-CoA to the 6"'-hydroxyl group of the 5-glucosyl moiety of anthocyanins. Ss5MaT1 showed a k(cat) value of 7.8 s(-1) at 30 degrees C and pH 7.0 for the malonylation of bisdemalonylsalvianin (pelargonidin 3-(6"-O-caffeyl-beta-glucopyranoside)-5-beta-glucopyranoside) and K(m) values of 101 microm and 57 microm for bisdemalonylsalvianin and malonyl-CoA, respectively. p-Coumaric acid, which mimics an aromatic acyl group linked to the 3-glucosidic moiety of an anthocyanin substrate, was a competitive inhibitor with respect to the substrate. This strongly suggests that the presence of an aromatic acyl group at the 3-glucosidic moiety of anthocyanin is important for substrate recognition by the enzyme. On the basis of the partial amino acid sequences of the purified enzyme, we isolated a cDNA encoding Ss5MaT1. Ss5MaT1 consisted of 462 amino acids and shared motifs that are commonly found among members of a versatile plant acyltransferase family, which was recently shown to include numerous homologs of unknown biochemical functions. Northern blot analysis revealed that the transcripts of Ss5MaT1 were detected in petals, sepals, bracts, and red stems, in accordance with the pigment accumulation patterns. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the aliphatic and aromatic acylations of anthocyanins are generally catalyzed by subfamily members of the plant acyltransferase family.

Abstract
We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton ( e(+/-)e(+/-), e(+/-)mu(+/-), mu(+/-)mu(+/-)) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb(-1) of data in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV collected during 1992-1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (tilde g) and squarks (tilde q) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tan beta = 2 and mu = -800 GeV/c(2), we set 95% confidence level limits of M(tilde g)>221 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde g) approximately M(tilde q), and M(tilde q)>168 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde q)>>M(tilde g), both with small variation as a function of mu.

Abstract
Neurogenesis of heterotopic gray matter in the brain of the microcephalic mouse prenatally exposed to X-rays at embryonic day 13 (E13) was studied immunohistochemically. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) as a marker to label the migrating position of neuroblasts generated at various embryonic stages showed that no "inside-out" pattern of neuronal migration occurred in the heterotopic cell mass similar to that seen in the laminated cortex. Further results in which midkind (MK) immunoreactive radial glial fibers did not appear in the heterotopic cell mass demonstrated that heterotopia formed in the absence of radial glia system. Different types of cells (pyramidal and non-pyramidal neurons) in the heterotopic cell mass were identified with immunoreactivity for anti-parvalbumin and anti-calbindin D-28K antibodies in addition to current histological methods. Two major types of neurons were mixed together with random distribution in the heterotopic cell mass. This finding indicates that irradiation might have no selective effects on the precursors of pyramidal and non-pyramidal neurons. Moreover, anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunostaining showed that numerous astrocytes were present in the heterotopic cell mass. The fact that astrocytes appeared in the heterotopia without the transition from classic radial glial cells to astrocytes suggests that astrocytes might be generated directly from a separate astroglial precursor.

Abstract
Growth factors promote cell survival and cell motility, presumably through the activation of Akt and the Rac and Cdc42 GTPases, respectively. Because Akt is dispensable for Rac/Cdc42 regulation of actin reorganization, it has been assumed that Rac and Cdc42 stimulate cell motility independent of Akt in mammalian cells. However, in this study we demonstrate that Akt is essential for Rac/Cdc42-regulated cell motility in mammalian fibroblasts. A dominant-negative Akt inhibits cell motility stimulated by Rac/Cdc42 or by PDGF treatment, without affecting ruffling membrane-type actin reorganization. We have confirmed a previous report that Akt is activated by expression of Rac and Cdc42 and also observed colocalization of endogenous phosphorylated Akt with Rac and Cdc42 at the leading edge of fibroblasts. Importantly, expression of active Akt but not the closely related kinase SGK is sufficient for increasing cell motility. This effect of Akt is cell autonomous and not mediated by inhibition of GSK3. Finally, we found that dominant-negative Akt but not SGK reverses the increased cell motility phenotype of fibroblasts lacking the PTEN tumor suppressor gene. Taken together, these results suggest that Akt promotes cell motility downstream of Rac/Cdc42 in growth factor-stimulated cells and in invasive PTEN-deficient cells.

Abstract
The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0+/-0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.
