Abstract
In this study, we identified ecdysteroidogenic enzymes in the cabbage armyworm, Mamestra brassicae, and demonstrated reduced expression of these genes during diapause. Some insects employ a temporary developmental arrest, diapause, to survive in severe environments. The titres of the moulting hormone ecdysteroid were reduced in diapause pupae of M. brassicae; therefore, ecdysteroidogenesis might be suppressed by a diapause-specific mechanism. To clarify expression changes of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes during diapause in M. brassicae, we first identified the genes for seven ecdysteroidogenic enzymes: Neverland, Non-molting glossy (Nm-g), CYP307A1 (Spook), CYP306A1 (Phantom), CYP302A1 (Disembodied), CYP315A1 (Shadow) and CYP314A1 (Shade). Enzymatic assays using heterologous expression in Drosophila Schneider 2 (S2) cells and analysis of mRNA distribution indicated that the identified genes were ecdysteroidogenic enzymes of M. brassicae. Expression levels of these ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes were compared between prothoracic glands in different pupal stages throughout diapause. Immediately after pupation, diapause-destined pupae showed similar expression levels of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes to those of nondiapause pupae. All of these genes showed reduced gene expression after diapause initiation. Expression was immediately increased in diapause-destined pupae at the postdiapause quiescence phase. These results indicate that reduced expression of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes suppresses ecdysteroidogenesis and maintains developmental arrest during diapause.

Abstract
A precise description of neutrino-nucleus reactions will play a key role in addressing fundamental questions such as the leptonic CP violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy through analyzing data from next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments. The neutrino energy relevant to the neutrino-nucleus reactions spans a broad range and, accordingly, the dominant reaction mechanism varies across the energy region from quasi-elastic scattering through nucleon resonance excitations to deep inelastic scattering. This corresponds to transitions of the effective degree of freedom for theoretical description from nucleons through meson-baryon to quarks. The main purpose of this review is to report our recent efforts towards a unified description of the neutrino-nucleus reactions over the wide energy range; recent overall progress in the field is also sketched. Starting with an overview of the current status of neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments, we formulate the cross section to be commonly used for the reactions over all the energy regions. A description of the neutrino-nucleon reactions follows and, in particular, a dynamical coupled-channels model for meson productions in and beyond the [Formula: see text](1232) region is discussed in detail. We then discuss the neutrino-nucleus reactions, putting emphasis on our theoretical approaches. We start the discussion with electroweak processes in few-nucleon systems studied with the correlated Gaussian method. Then we describe quasi-elastic scattering with nuclear spectral functions, and meson productions with a [Formula: see text]-hole model. Nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions determined through a global analysis are also discussed. Finally, we discuss issues to be addressed for future developments.

Abstract
T2K reports its first results in the search for CP violation in neutrino oscillations using appearance and disappearance channels for neutrino- and antineutrino-mode beams. The data include all runs from January 2010 to May 2016 and comprise 7.482×10^{20} protons on target in neutrino mode, which yielded in the far detector 32 e-like and 135 μ-like events, and 7.471×10^{20} protons on target in antineutrino mode, which yielded 4 e-like and 66 μ-like events. Reactor measurements of sin^{2}2θ_{13} have been used as an additional constraint. The one-dimensional confidence interval at 90% for the phase δ_{CP} spans the range (-3.13, -0.39) for normal mass ordering. The CP conservation hypothesis (δ_{CP}=0, π) is excluded at 90% C.L.

Abstract
A distinct thermal Hall signal is observed in a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}. The transverse thermal conductivity shows a power-law temperature dependence below 50 K, where a spin gap opens. We suggest that because of the very low longitudinal thermal conductivity and the thermal Hall signals, a phonon Hall effect is induced by strong phonon scattering of orphan Cu^{2+} spins formed in the random domains of the Cu^{2+}-Sb^{5+} dumbbells in Ba_{3}CuSb_{2}O_{9}.

Abstract
The resistive interchange mode destabilized by the resonant interaction with the trapped energetic ions is fully suppressed when the injected power of electron cyclotron heating exceeds a certain threshold. It is shown for the first time that the complete stabilization of the energetic-particle-driven mode without relaxing the energetic particle (EP) pressure gradient is possible by reducing the radial width of the eigenmodes δ_{w}, especially when δ_{w} narrows to a small enough value relative to the finite orbit width of EP.

Abstract

Background
Immune checkpoint therapy only benefits a fraction of patients, thus huge efforts have been made to develop predictive biomarkers to identify those patients. Immune biomarkers like PD-L1 expression are extremely dynamic and the timing of evaluation, on primary or metastatic disease, may be critical. We have already shown that tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) decrease during metastatic progression in triple-negative (TN) and human epidermal growth factor-2 positive (HER2+) breast cancers (Ogiya R, ASCO 2015), suggesting that mechanisms of immune escape contribute and favour the metastatic progression. In this work we aimed to characterize the modulation and changes of specific immune markers during the metastatic spread comparing paired samples from primary and recurrent breast cancers.
Methods
We retrospectively identified 25 patients with HER2+ (n = 14) and TN (n = 11) early breast cancer diagnosed between 1990 and 2009 at Tokai University Hospital, and who subsequently experienced a first regional or distant recurrence confirmed by tumour biopsy/resection. Haematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of these paired samples were evaluated for stromal TILs. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using primary antibodies against CD4, CD8, Foxp3, PD-L1, PD-L2, and HLA-class I.
Results
The sites of first recurrence was the skin (n = 7), brain (n = 6), lymph node (n = 4), lung (n = 3), bone (n = 2), and one of each of bone marrow, liver and muscle. Immunohistochemical evaluations could not be performed in 5 primary tumours and 2 recurrent tumours because of the small quantity of the specimens. The percentage of CD8+ T cells staining in the primary tumours was significantly higher (median 16%) than that in recurrent tumours (median 10%) (paired t-test, p = 0.008) Similarly, the percentage of CD4+ T cells staining in the primary tumours was significantly higher (median 40%) than that in recurrent tumours (median 25%) (p = 0.026). The percentage of Foxp3+ T cells was low (<10%) and similar in both primary and recurrent tumours (p = 0.16). PD-L1, PD-L2, and HLA class I antibody expression was not statistically different between primary and recurrent tumours, but conversions from positive to negative and vice versa were observed. PD-L1+ staining (≥1%) was 90% and 85% in primary and metastatic tumours, respectively.

Conclusions
Tumours at first metastatic recurrence in HER2+ and TN breast cancers have a lower percentage of both CD8+ and CD4+ T cells compared to primary tumours, confirming a potential role of immune escape in tumour progression. Other immune markers, including PD-L1, were not found to change significantly, but negative/positive conversions were observed. This suggest that an evaluation of disease at the time of immunotherapy administration might be more informative. These findings warrant larger confirmation studies.

Introduction
Axillary lymph node dissection is standard therapy for patients with positive-node breast cancer, and can be performed with an electrocautery scalpel and suture ligation in most cases. However, knot slipping can occur during suture ligation and this can spread thermal damage to peripheral tissues. The LigaSureTM Small Jaw vessel-sealing system was developed as an alternative to suture ligatures, staplers, and other energy-dependent devices for sealing blood and lymphatic vessels, but its use in axillary dissection for breast cancer is limited. We prospectively compared the duration until drain removal after surgery, total lymph fluid drainage volume, intraoperative blood loss, and incidence of complications after axillary dissections, between this device and conventional methods.
Methods
This prospective randomized study was conducted at the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery at Tokai University School of Medicine, Kanagawa, Japan, between October 2011 and March 2015. Major eligibility criteria included (1) pathologically confirmed breast cancer diagnosis, (2) age ≥20 and ≤80 years, and (3) a signed informed consent form. The primary endpoint was duration until drain removal after surgery. The secondary endpoints were total lymph fluid drainage volume, intraoperative blood loss, and incidence of postoperative surgical complications. We defined the criterion for drain removal as a lymph fluid drainage volume of <40 mL/day for two consecutive days.The target accrual was 100 patients, with a two-sided error rate of 5%, and 90% power. The assumed duration until drain removal after surgery was 7.2 days in the control group (conventional use of an electrocautery scalpel and suture ligation) and 5.8 days in the study group (use of the LigaSureTM Small Jaw). This clinical study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Tokai University School of Medicine and is registered with UMIN (No. 000013034).
Results
Initially, 100 patients were assigned as eligible; however, two patients were later excluded because of the exclusion criteria. Of 98 patients, 49 were randomized to the study group, and 49 to the control group. The mean duration until drain removal after surgery was 5.2 days in the study group and 5.0 days in the control group (p=0.573). The mean total lymph fluid drainage volumes were 260.3 and 233.5 mL (p=0.502), and the mean intraoperative blood loss volumes were 17.8 and 18.0 mL (p=0.949), for the study and control groups, respectively. No significant differences were found between the two groups regarding drain removal duration, total drainage volume, and intraoperative blood loss volume. Both groups had low incidence rates of postoperative hematoma, wound infection, lymphedema, and pain, and had similar incidence rates of seroma formation after drain removal.
Conclusion
Our study results indicated that the use of the LigaSureTM Small Jaw in axillary dissection for breast cancer was as safe as conventional methods. However, using the LigaSureTM Small Jaw did not improve surgical outcomes such as duration until drain removal and total lymph fluid drainage volume compared with conventional methods.

Abstract
Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for patients with hormone receptor-negative (HR-negative) breast cancer (BC) to identify subtypes that require anthracycline treatment.
Methods: In total, 103 patients with operable HR-negative BC were registered. They were randomely assigned to administration of 6 cycles of docetaxel (75mg/m2) and cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m2) (TC6) or 3 cycles of 5-fluorouracil (500 mg/m2), epirubicin (100mg/m2), and cyclophosphamide (500mg/m2) followed by 3 cycles of docetaxel (100mg/m2) (FEC-D). Cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and EGFR expression were used to identify basal and non-basal triple-negative (TN) BC. The primary endpoint was pathological complete response (pCR); secondary endpoints were safety, breast-conserving surgery, disease-free survival, and overall survival. Predictive factors of pCR for each regimen were also evaluated.
Results:
The pCR rate was 36% for FEC-D and 25.5% for TC6, which did not differ significantly (P=0.265). When TN BC was subdivided into basal and non-basal subtypes, the pCR rate in the basal subtype was significantly lower for TC6 (13.6%) than for FEC-D (42.9%) (P=0.033), but did not significantly differ in the non-basal (TC6, 36.4%; FEC-D, 25.0%) and HER2-positive (TC6, 41.7%; FEC-D, 35.7%) cases.
The relative dose intensities of epirubicin and docetaxel in FEC-D and docetaxel in TC6 were 96.3±13.0%, 93.5±14.6%, and 93.9±16.3% (mean±SD), respectively. Occurrence of grade ≥2 adverse events was significant in FEC-D-treated patients. Poor appetite (P<0.001), nausea (P<0.001), vomiting (P<0.001), dysgeusia (P=0.03), and fatigue (P=0.05) were significantly more common for FEC-D than TC6. Patients treated with FEC-D experienced significantly more febrile neutropenia and anemia (P=0.016 and 0.017, respectively).
The rates of breast-conserving surgery were 68.0 and 72.3% for FEC-D and TC6, respectively (P=0.641).
Patients achieved pCR had better DFS (log rank test, P = 0.287) and OS (log rank test, P = 0.069), though not significant. Patients treated with FEC-D had better DFS (log rank test, P = 0.107) and OS (log rank test, P = 0.159), though not significant. Among patients with TN BC, those treated with FEC-D had significantly better DFS (log rank test, P = 0.016) and OS (log rank test, P = 0.034) than treated with TC6.
Low ALDH1 expression and high topo IIα protein expression were strongly correlated with pCR in FEC-D, with odds ratios (ORs) of 4.33 [95% CI, 1.02–18.38] and 4.08 [0.97–17.2], respectively. ALDH1 was also associated with pCR in TC, OR=3.50 [0.84–14.6]. Other factors, including age, tumor size, nodal status, tumor grade, Ki67, p53, and TOP 2A status were not associated with pCR in either regimen.
Conclusions:We found that TC6 was less effective than FEC-D for treating HR-negative BC because it was insufficient for TNBC, particularly for basal BC. This suggests that anthracycline is more important than taxane for basal BC. Additionally, ALDH1 could be a marker for resistance to conventional chemotherapy.

Abstract
AIM Early endoscopic recurrence is frequently observed in patients following resection for Crohn's disease (CD). However, factors affecting the incidence of an early postoperative endoscopic recurrence (EPER) have not been fully determined. The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors for EPER after ileocolonic resection for CD. METHOD This was a retrospective, international multicentre study, in which 127 patients with a first ileocolonoscopy conducted between 6 and 12 months after ileocolonic resection for CD were included. Endoscopic recurrence was defined as a Rutgeerts score of ≥ i2. The following variables were investigated as potential risk factors for EPER: gender, age at surgery, location and behaviour of CD, smoking, concomitant perianal lesions, preoperative use of steroids, immunomodulators and biologics, previous resection, blood transfusion, surgical procedure (open vs laparoscopic approach), length of resected bowel, type of anastomosis (side-to-side vs end-to-end), postoperative complications, granuloma and postoperative biological therapy. Variables related to the patient, disease and surgical procedure were investigated as potential risk factors for EPER, with univariate and multivariate (logistic regression) analyses. RESULTS 43/127 (34%) patients had EPER at the time of the first postoperative ileocolonoscopy. In univariate analysis, only preoperative steroid use was significantly associated with a higher rate of EPER [21/45 patients (47%) on steroids and 22/82 patients (27%) without steroids (P = 0.04)]. In multivariate analysis, only preoperative steroid use was a significant independent risk factor for EPER (odds ratio 3.28, 95% confidence interval: 1.30-8.28; P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS This study found that only preoperative steroid use was a significant risk factor for EPER after ileocolonic resection for CD. Prospective studies are necessary to evaluate precisely the impact of perioperative medications on EPER rates.

Abstract
Aberrant expression of the DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and disruption of DNA methylation patterns are associated with carcinogenesis and cancer cell survival. The oncogenic MUC1-C protein is aberrantly overexpressed in diverse carcinomas; however, there is no known link between MUC1-C and DNA methylation. Our results demonstrate that MUC1-C induces the expression of DNMT1 and DNMT3b, but not DNMT3a, in breast and other carcinoma cell types. We show that MUC1-C occupies the DNMT1 and DNMT3b promoters in complexes with NF-κB p65 and drives DNMT1 and DNMT3b transcription. In this way, MUC1-C controls global DNA methylation as determined by analysis of LINE-1 repeat elements. The results further demonstrate that targeting MUC1-C downregulates DNA methylation of the CDH1 tumor suppressor gene in association with induction of E-cadherin expression. These findings provide compelling evidence that MUC1-C is of functional importance to induction of DNMT1 and DNMT3b and, in turn, changes in DNA methylation patterns in cancer cells.

Abstract
Chemerin, originally known as a chemoattractant derived from adipose tissue and the liver, has been reported to have regulatory functions in gluconeogenesis, peripheral insulin sensitivity, and insulin secretion. This study was conducted to assess the postweaning changes in expression of this cytokine and its physiological role in the modification of glucose metabolism associated with weaning. Eighteen tissue samples were collected from Holstein calves (90 d of age; n = 4) to investigate the tissue distributions of chemerin and its receptors genes. was highly expressed in the liver, and secreted chemerin protein was found in the plasma. Among the receptors of chemerin, and were ubiquitously expressed whereas was predominantly expressed in the liver. The changes in glucose metabolism and expression of these genes after weaning were assessed by comparing suckling calves (n = 6) and weaned calves (n = 8) of Japanese Black cattle. No significant difference was observed in plasma glucose levels between suckling and weaned calves (P = 0.22), whereas the plasma level of total ketone bodies was significantly higher in weaned calves (P < 0.01). Plasma levels of insulin and cortisol did not differ between suckling and weaned calves. The mRNA levels of certain key enzymes involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis were also altered; for instance, level was lower in postweaning calves (P < 0.05) and () level tended to be higher after weaning (P = 0.08). However, was not altered after weaning. The plasma levels of hepatic stress indicators were also changed, with aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, and lactate dehydrogenase being significantly elevated in postweaning calves (P < 0.05). Chemerin protein in liver tissue was less abundant in weaned calves (P < 0.05), although there were no changes in its transcript levels. The abundance of plasma chemerin protein did not change after weaning (P = 0.95). In summary, these data indicate that as a consequence of weaning, which causes physiological stress and alters hepatic metabolism, chemerin protein expression within the liver is downregulated, indicating that chemerin plays a role in the upregulation of hepatic expression via its inhibitory effect on hepatic gluconeogenesis.

Abstract
BMI1 is a component of the PRC1 complex that is overexpressed in breast and other cancers, and promotes self-renewal of cancer stem-like cells. The oncogenic mucin 1 (MUC1) C-terminal (MUC1-C) subunit is similarly overexpressed in human carcinoma cells and has been linked to their self-renewal. There is no known relationship between MUC1-C and BMI1 in cancer. The present studies demonstrate that MUC1-C drives BMI1 transcription by a MYC-dependent mechanism in breast and other cancer cells. In addition, we show that MUC1-C blocks miR-200c-mediated downregulation of BMI1 expression. The functional significance of this MUC1-C→BMI1 pathway is supported by the demonstration that targeting MUC1-C suppresses BMI1-induced ubiquitylation of H2A and thereby derepresses homeobox HOXC5 and HOXC13 gene expression. Notably, our results further show that MUC1-C binds directly to BMI1 and promotes occupancy of BMI1 on the CDKN2A promoter. In concert with BMI1-induced repression of the p16INK4a tumor suppressor, we found that targeting MUC1-C is associated with induction of p16INK4a expression. In support of these results, analysis of three gene expresssion datasets demonstrated highly significant correlations between MUC1-C and BMI1 in breast cancers. These findings uncover a previously unrecognized role for MUC1-C in driving BMI1 expression and in directly interacting with this stem cell factor, linking MUC1-C with function of the PRC1 in epigenetic gene silencing.

Mycobacterium orygis, commonly known as the oryx bacillus and a newly proposed Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex subspecies, was isolated from 18 cattle in a dairy farm and two captured rhesus monkeys in a zoo in Bangladesh. All the infected animals had tuberculosis lesions in their lungs, suggesting transmission and infection with M. orygis by an airborne route. The 20 isolates were analysed using a range of conventional and molecular typing methods, and RD-deletion typing and sequencing of selected genes confirmed the isolates as M. orygis. Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) allowed the isolates to be divided into three clusters based on the relatedness of their MLVA profiles. The two monkey isolates shared the same MLVA pattern with 15 of the cattle isolates, whereas the remaining three cattle isolates had different patterns, even though the latter animals had been kept in the same dairy farm. The diversity observed among isolates may suggest the bacteria have been established in this area for a long period. This study along with other recent findings that report the detection of M. orygis from animals as well as humans originating from South Asia potentially indicate endemic distribution of M. orygis in South Asia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Endometrial cytology has been widely used as a screening tool in Japan. Traditionally, a three-tier reporting system, consisting of 'negative', 'suspicious' and 'positive' categories, has been used. However, a more descriptive system, the New Terminology in Endometrial Cytology (NTEMC), which is based on the Bethesda System for uterine cervical cytology, was introduced recently. The objective of this study was to validate the NTEMC criteria. METHODS Endometrial cytology specimens that had been categorised as 'suspicious' were collected in our hospital between 2003 and 2013, and from these, 106 specimens with corresponding histological results, were re-evaluated according to the NTEMC criteria. Diagnostic categories were assigned based on that chosen by the majority of the examining members. RESULTS Negative, atypical endometrial cells, of undetermined significance (ATEC-US), atypical endometrial cells for which atypical endometrial hyperplasia or worse cannot be excluded (ATEC-A), endometrial hyperplasia, atypical endometrial hyperplasia and malignancy were selected as the diagnostic categories for 9 (8.5%), 34 (32.1%), 17 (16%), 34 (32.1%), 5 (4.7%) and 7 (6.6%) specimens, respectively. Corresponding histological categories of benign, endometrial hyperplasia, atypical endometrial hyperplasia and malignancy were established in 28 (82.4%), 1 (2.9%), 2 (5.9%) and 3 (8.8%) ATEC-US specimens, respectively, and in 6 (35.3%), 3 (17.6%), 2 (11.8%) and 6 (35.3%) ATEC-A specimens, respectively. The histological category distribution differed significantly (P = 0.001), and there was a significant correlation between corresponding cytological and histological categories (P = 0.005). CONCLUSION The ATEC category of NTEMC system works well in a practical setting and resembles the Bethesda reporting system ASC (atypical squamous cells) category for cervical cytology.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π^{+} production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al.

Abstract
Multi-channel soft x-ray (SX) diagnostic has been used in the large helical device (LHD) to research magnetohydrodynamic equilibria and activities. However, in the coming deuterium plasma experiments of LHD, it will be difficult to use semiconductor systems near LHD. Therefore, a new type of SX diagnostic, a scintillator-based type diagnostic, has been investigated in order to avoid damage from the radiation. A fiber optic plate coated by P47 scintillator will be used to detect SX emission. Scintillation light will be transferred by pure silica core optical fibers and detected by photomultiplier tubes. A vertically elongated section of LHD will be covered by a 13 ch. array. Effects from the Deuterium Deuterium neutrons can be negligible when the scintillator is covered by a Pb plate 4 cm in thickness to avoid gamma-rays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a regulatory factor in motility of the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus. Although we proposed that vagal cholinergic and mast cell-derived non-cholinergic components including serotonin coordinately shorten the esophagus, the precise mechanism of serotonin-induced contractions in the suncus esophagus is still unclear. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine characteristics of contractile responses induced by serotonin and to identify 5-HT receptor subtypes responsible for regulating motility in the suncus esophagus. METHODS An isolated segment of the suncus esophagus was placed in an organ bath, and longitudinal or circular mechanical responses were recorded using a force transducer. KEY RESULTS Serotonin evoked contractile responses of the suncus esophagus in the longitudinal direction but not in the circular direction. Tetrodotoxin did not affect the serotonin-induced contractions. Pretreatment with a non-selective 5-HT receptor antagonist or double application of 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor antagonists blocked the serotonin-induced contractions. 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor agonists, but not a 5-HT3 receptor agonist, evoked contractile responses in the suncus esophagus. CONCLUSION & INFERENCES The findings suggest that serotonin induces contractile responses of the longitudinal smooth muscle in the muscularis mucosae of the suncus esophagus that are mediated via 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptors on muscle cells. The serotonin-induced contractions might contribute to esophageal peristalsis and emetic response.

Abstract
The emergence of complex new ground states at interfaces has been identified as one of the most promising routes to highly tunable nanoscale materials. Despite recent progress, isolating and controlling the underlying mechanisms behind these emergent properties remains among the most challenging materials physics problems to date. In particular, generating ferromagnetism localized at the interface of two nonferromagnetic materials is of fundamental and technological interest. Moreover, the ability to turn the ferromagnetism on and off would shed light on the origin of such emergent phenomena and is promising for spintronic applications. We demonstrate that ferromagnetism confined within one unit cell at the interface of CaRuO3 and CaMnO3 can be switched on and off by changing the symmetry of the oxygen octahedra connectivity at the boundary. Interfaces that are symmetry-matched across the boundary exhibit interfacial CaMnO3 ferromagnetism while the ferromagnetism at symmetry-mismatched interfaces is suppressed. We attribute the suppression of ferromagnetic order to a reduction in charge transfer at symmetry-mismatched interfaces, where frustrated bonding weakens the orbital overlap. Thus, interfacial symmetry is a new route to control emergent ferromagnetism in materials such as CaMnO3 that exhibit antiferromagnetism in bulk form.

Abstract
Proton radii of ^{12-19}C densities derived from first accurate charge changing cross section measurements at 900A MeV with a carbon target are reported. A thick neutron surface evolves from ∼0.5 fm in ^{15}C to ∼1 fm in ^{19}C. The halo radius in ^{19}C is found to be 6.4±0.7 fm as large as ^{11}Li. Ab initio calculations based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces reproduce the radii well.

Abstract
We evaluated the brain lesions of patients with chronic alcoholism (n = 34) in comparison with age- and sex-matched controls (n = 40) by MR imaging. T1-weighted sagittal and axial images and T2-weighted axial images were obtained with a 0.5 T superconducting MR unit. Various brain measurements were then performed, and the presence of regions of abnormal signal intensity was also compared between the two groups. The brain measurements revealed significant cerebral atrophy (characterized by lateral and 3rd ventricular dilatation, and widening of the interhemispheric fissure) as well as significant cerebellar atrophy (represented by 4th ventricular dilatation) in the alcoholic group. These changes were more prominent in patients in their fifties and sixties than in those aged in the thirties and forties. Focal hypointense lesions were observed in 20.6% of the alcoholics and in 5% of the controls (p < 0.01), while focal hyperintense lesions were observed in 61.8% of the alcoholics and in 20% of the controls (p < 0.001). The severity of these MR findings correlated well with the age of the patients. These observations suggest that alcohol is an important promotor of brain aging.

UNLABELLED Staphylocoagulase, an extracellular protein secreted by Staphylococcus aureus, has been used as an epidemiological marker. At least 12 serotypes and 24 genotypes subdivided on the basis of nucleotide sequence have been reported to date. In this study, we identified a novel staphylocoagulase nucleotide sequence, coa310, from staphylococcal food poisoning isolates that had the ability to coagulate plasma, but could not be typed using the conventional method. The protein encoded by coa310 contained the six fundamental conserved domains of staphylocoagulase. The full-length nucleotide sequence of coa310 shared the highest similarity (77·5%) with that of staphylocoagulase-type (SCT) XIa. The sequence of the D1 region, which would be responsible for the determination of SCT, shared the highest similarity (91·8%) with that of SCT XIa. These results suggest that coa310 is a novel variant of SCT XI. Moreover, we demonstrated that coa310 encodes a functioning coagulase, by confirming the coagulating activity of the recombinant protein expressed from coa310. This is the first study to directly demonstrate that Coa310, a putative SCT XI, has coagulating activity. These findings may be useful for the improvement of the staphylocoagulase-typing method, including serotyping and genotyping. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first study to identify a novel variant of staphylocoagulase type XI based on its nucleotide sequence and to demonstrate coagulating activity in the variant using a recombinant protein. Elucidation of the variety of staphylocoagulases will provide suggestions for further improvement of the staphylocoagulase-typing method and contribute to our understanding of the epidemiologic characterization of Staphylococcus aureus.
