Bioaccumulation and bound-residue formation of 14C-decabromodiphenyl ether in an earthworm-soil system

Decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) is one of the most frequently detected flame retardants in terrestrial environments. However, the fate of DecaBDE and its transport in an earthworm-soil system with and without a DecaBDE-degrading strain have rarely been evaluated. In this study, ¹⁴C-DecaBDE was self-synthesized, and a DBDE-degrading strain, Rhodococcus erythropolis, was used in an earthworm-soil system. DecaBDE showed limited degradation and mineralization after 35days of all treatments. The bound-residue (BR) formation in soil was <2.5% in the system containing earthworms, which was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that observed in the absence of earthworms (<0.45%). DecaBDE could be adsorbed by the earthworms with a BSAF of ≤0.31. The distribution of ¹⁴C-DecaBDE concentrations in the earthworm roughly followed the pattern of crop gizzard>digestive system>head>tail>body wall, suggesting that DecaBDE was mainly uptaken through ingestion. Up to 31% of the ¹⁴C-DecaBDE in the earthworms was not extractable, revealing that the total concentration of accumulated ¹⁴C-DecaBDE was underestimated. The results also showed that the presence of DecaBDE-degrading bacteria did not significantly affect the fate of DecaBDE and its accumulation in earthworms. The study indicates that the conventional assessment of the bioaccumulation and ecological effects of DecaBDE, which is based only on extractable concentrations, may underestimate the risks.

Phototransformation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol in aqueous solution: Kinetics and photolysis products

In this research, we studied the phototransformation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) by UV irradiation in aqueous solution. Effects of typical environmental factors (i.e., pH and the initial concentration of TBP, Fe³⁺ and NO₂^-) were also investigated. Results showed that the transformation process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The transformation rate constant of TBP decreased with increasing initial concentration and increased with increasing Fe³⁺ and NO₂^- concentrations as well as increasing pH. Ten photoproducts were tentatively identified after irradiation of TBP, according to HPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap MS and GC/MS analysis. Among them, two dihydroxylated dibromobenzene compounds (di-OH-DBB) were found to be predominant over the reaction time, indicating that hydrodebromination of TBP could be the main phototransformation mechanism. In addition, the identification of eight OH-PBDEs and di-OH-PBBs suggested that photodimerization might also be a reaction pathway for TBP photochemical reactions.

Enhanced degradation of BDE209 in spiked soil by ferrous-activated persulfate process with chelating agents

In order to maintain the quantity of ferrous ions, two eco-friendly chelating agents (CAs), i.e., sodium citrate (Citrate) and sodium gluconate (Glu), have been introduced into a traditional iron activated sodium persulfate (PS) system (Fe²⁺/PS). The results indicated that the PS/CA/Fe²⁺ oxidation could be an effective method for BDE209 removal. Effects of the chelating agents, reagents dosage, and pH were evaluated in batch experiments. Glu was observed to be more effective than citrate. In addition, the rate constants (k ₁) of BDE209 removal indicated a quadratic curve relationship with initial persulfate concentrations (k ₁ = -0.019 × [PS]₀² + 0.031 × [PS]₀ + 0.007, R ² = 0.933, [PS]₀ = 0.1-1.0 M) and a good linear relationship with initial ferrous contents (k ₁ = 0.109 × [Fe²⁺]₀ + 0.002, R ² = 0.943). Furthermore, as a reducing agent, ascorbic acid (H₂A) could enhance the degradation rate of BDE209, which might be because H₂A accelerated the transformation process from Fe³⁺- to Fe²⁺-gluconate complexes.

Removal of polybrominated diphenyl ethers by biomass carbon-supported nanoscale zerovalent iron particles: influencing factors, kinetics, and mechanism

In this study, nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) immobilized on biomass carbon was used for the high efficient removal of BDE 209. NZVI supported on biomass carbon minimized the aggregation of NZVI particles resulting in the increased reaction performance. The proposed removal mechanism included the adsorption of BDE 209 on the surface or interior of the biomass carbon NZVI (BC-NZVI) particles and the subsequent debromination of BDE 209 by NZVI while biomass carbon served as an electron shuttle. BC-NZVI particles and the interaction between BC-NZVI particles and BDE 209 were characterized by TEM, XRD, and XPS. The removal reaction followed a pseudo-first-order rate expression under different reaction conditions, and the k _obs was higher than that of other NZVI-supported materials. The debromination of BDE 209 by BC-NZVI was a stepwise process from nona-BDE to DE. A proposed pathway suggested that supporting NZVI on biomass carbon has potential as a promising technique for in situ organic-contaminated groundwater remediation.

Effect of Soil Fumigation on Degradation of Pendimethalin and Oxyfluorfen in Laboratory and Ginger Field Studies

Herbicides are usually applied to agricultural fields following soil fumigation to provide effective weed control in high-value cash crops. However, phytotoxicity has been observed in ginger seedlings following the application of herbicides in fumigated fields. This study tested a mixture of herbicides (pendimethalin and oxyfluorfen) and several fumigant treatments in laboratory and field studies to determine their effect on the growth of ginger. The results showed that soil fumigation significantly (P < 0.05) extended the degradation period of these herbicides in the field and in laboratory studies. The half-life of pendimethalin was extended by an average of approximately 1.29 times in the field and 1.74 times in the laboratory. The half-life of oxyfluorfen was extended by an average of about 1.19 times in the field and 1.32 times in the laboratory. Moreover, the extended period of herbicide degradation in the fumigant and nonfumigant treatments significantly reduced ginger plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, and the chlorophyll content. The study concluded that applying a dose below the recommended rate of these herbicides in chloropicrin (CP) or CP + 1,3-dichloropropene fumigated ginger fields is appropriate, as application of the recommended herbicide dose in fumigated soil may be phytotoxic to ginger.

Identification of Thyroid Hormone Disruptors among HO-PBDEs: In Vitro Investigations and Coregulator Involved Simulations

Some hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (HO-PBDEs), that have been widely detected in the environment and tissues of humans and wildlife, bind to thyroid hormone (TH) receptor (TR) and can disrupt functioning of systems modulated by the TR. However, mechanisms of TH disrupting effects are still equivocal. Here, disruption of functions of TH modulated pathways by HO-PBDEs was evaluated by assays of competitive binding, coactivator recruitment, and proliferation of GH3 cells. In silico simulations considering effects of coregulators were carried out to investigate molecular mechanisms and to predict potencies for disrupting functions of the TH. Some HO-PBDEs were able to bind to TR with moderate affinities but were not agonists. In GH3 proliferation assays, 13 out of 16 HO-PBDEs were antagonists for the TH. In silico simulations of molecular dynamics revealed that coregulators were essential for identification of TH disruptors. Among HO-PBDEs, binding of passive antagonists induced repositioning of H12, blocking AF-2 (transactivation function 2) and preventing recruitment of the coactivator. Binding of active antagonists exposed the coregulator binding site, which tended to bind to the corepressor rather than the coactivator. By considering both passive and active antagonisms, anti-TH potencies of HO-PBDEs could be predicted from free energy of binding.

Microbial degradation of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), an e-plastic with decabromodiphenyl oxide and antimony trioxide

Accumulation of electronic waste has increased catastrophically and out of that various plastic resins constitute one of the leading thrown out materials in the electronic machinery. Enrichment medium, containing high impact polystyrene (HIPS) with decabromodiphenyl oxide and antimony trioxide as sole carbon source, was used to isolate microbial cultures. The viability of these cultures in the e-plastic containing mineral medium was further confirmed by triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) reduction test. Four cultures were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing as Enterobacter sp., Citrobacter sedlakii, Alcaligenes sp. and Brevundimonas diminuta. Biodegradation experiments were carried out in flask level and gelatin supplementation (0.1% w/v) along with HIPS had increased the degradation rate to a maximum of 12.4% (w/w) within 30days. This is the first report for this kind of material. The comparison of FTIR, NMR, and TGA analysis of original and degraded e-plastic films revealed structural changes under microbial treatment. Polystyrene degradation intermediates in the culture supernatant were also detected using HPLC analysis. The gravity of biodegradation was validated by morphological changes under scanning electron microscope. All isolates displayed depolymerase activity to substantiate enzymatic degradation of e-plastic.

Toxicogenomic Assessment of 6-OH-BDE47-Induced Developmental Toxicity in Chicken Embryos

Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are analogs of PBDEs with hundreds of possible structures and are frequently detected in the environment. However, the in vivo evidence on the toxicity of OH-PBDEs is still very limited. Here, the developmental toxicity of 6-OH-BDE47, a predominant congener of OH-PBDEs detected in the environment, in chicken embryos was assessed using a toxicogenomic approach. Fertilized chicken eggs were dosed via in ovo administration of 0.006 to 0.474 nmol 6-OH-BDE47/g egg followed by 18 days of incubation. Significant embryo lethality (LD₅₀ = 1.940 nmol/g egg) and increased hepatic somatic index (HSI) were caused by 6-OH-BDE47 exposure. The functional enrichment of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was associated with oxidative phosphorylation, generation of precursor metabolites and energy, and electron transport chains, which suggest that 6-OH-BDE47 exposure may disrupt the embryo development by altering the function of energy production in mitochondria. Moreover, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated responses including up-regulation of CYP1A4 were observed in the livers of embryos exposed to 6-OH-BDE47. Overall, this study confirmed the embryo lethality by 6-OH-BDE47 and further improved the mechanistic understanding of OH-PBDEs-caused toxicity. Ecological risk assessment via application of both no-observed-effect level (NOEL) and the sensitive NOTEL (transcriptional NOEL) suggested that OH-PBDEs might cause ecological risk to wild birds.

Atmospheric chemical reactions of alternatives of polybrominated diphenyl ethers initiated by OH: A case study on triphenyl phosphate

Many studies have been performed to evaluate the environmental risk caused by alternative flame retardants (AFRs) of polybrominated diphenyl ethers due to their ubiquitous occurrence in the environment. However, as an indispensable component of the environmental risk assessment, the information on atmospheric fate of AFRs is limited although some AFRs have been frequently and highly detected in the atmosphere. Here, a combined quantum chemical method and kinetics modeling were used to investigate atmospheric transformation mechanism and kinetics of AFRs initiated by OH in the presence of O2, taking triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) as a case. Results show that the pathway involving initial OH addition to phenyl of TPhP to form TPhP-OH adduct, and subsequent reaction of the TPhP-OH adduct with O2 to finally form phenol phosphate, is the most favorable for the titled reaction. The calculated overall reaction rate constant is 1.6×10(-12)cm(3) molecule(-1)s(-1), translating 7.6days atmospheric lifetime of TPhP. This clarifies that gaseous TPhP has atmospheric persistence. In addition, it was found that ice surface, as a case of ubiquitous water in the atmosphere, has little effect on the kinetics of the rate-determining step in the OH-initiated TPhP reaction.

Factors influencing leaching of PBDEs from waste cathode ray tube plastic housings

Samples of waste cathode ray tube (CRT) plastic housings were exposed to Milli-Q® water containing dissolved humic matter at concentrations of 0, 100 and 1000mgL(-1) as leaching fluid under laboratory conditions, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) determined in the resulting leachate. Despite the relatively hydrophobic physicochemical properties of PBDEs, concentrations of ƩPBDEs in the leachate from the leaching experiments in this study ranged from 14,000 to 200,000ngL(-1). PBDE leaching appears to be a second order process, whereby a period of initially intense dissolution of more labile PBDEs is followed by a slower stage corresponding to external diffusion of the soluble residue in the material. The bulk of transfer of PBDEs to the leaching fluid occurs within the first 6h of contact, during which time we suggest that the most labile PBDEs are "washed" off the surface of the CRT plastics. The predominant congeners in the chips were BDE-209 (2600mgkg(-1)) and BDE 183 (220mgkg(-1)). The impacts on PBDE leaching of leachate pH and temperature were also examined. Increasing the temperature of leaching fluids from 20 to 80°C, enhances the leachability of BDE-209 and BDE-99 from plastics. In all cases, the alkaline pH8.5 examined, resulted in the greatest PBDE concentrations in leachate. Agitation of the waste/leachate mixture enhances PBDE leaching from CRT plastics. Potential evidence for debromination of heavy congeners to the lower brominated and more bioavailable BDEs was observed. Specifically, BDEs-47, -85 and -100 were detected in the leachates, but were absent from the CRT plastics themselves.

Effects of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles on phytotoxicity and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in contaminated soil

In vivo studies of the interactions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plants have generally focused on uptake, translocation, metabolism and accumulation, but there were limited reports about the phytotoxicity and translocation of PBDEs in contaminated soil with the effects of nanoparticles. In this study, the effects of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles on translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in contaminated soil and its phytotoxicity to Chinese cabbage were investigated by soil culture experiments. The results showed that the plant biomass, germination rate, and shoot and root lengths of treated soil (S-5) increased by 0.0044 g, 15%, and 5 and 6 mm, respectively, compared with untreated soil (S-2B). The average Ni and Fe contents of the edible parts(stem and leaf) of the S-5 sample, which contained 0.03 g/g Ni/Fe and 10 mg/kg BDE209, were measured at 1.71 and 184 mg/kg, respectively. The superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities in the S-5 sample decreased by 12%, 6.1% and 5.9%, respectively, while compared with the S-2B sample. In all treatments, the contents of BDE209 and the total PBDEs in sample S-5 were lowest, suggesting that the fresh Ni/Fe nanoparticles had higher toxicity than that of the aged nanoparticles. And the lower brominated PBDEs (tri-to nona-) were detected in samples, indicating uptake, debromination and/or metabolism of PBDEs existed in plants. The phytotoxicity and translocation of BDE209 in the contaminated soil decreased as a result of the effects of the Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles.

Effect of solvent on debromination of decabromodiphenyl ether by Ni/Fe nanoparticles and nano zero-valent iron particles

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and its modified nanomaterials are widely used in the degradation of some halogenated organic pollutants. In this study, we explored the effects of different proportions of tetrahydrofuran (THF) (50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 %) on the degradation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) by Ni/Fe and nZVI nanoparticles with reference to the degradation kinetics, products, and pathway. The results illustrated that the effects of solvent on the degradation of BDE209 were similar when the two kinds of nanomaterials were used, although the Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles exhibited a better catalytic activity compared with the pure nZVI during the degradation of BDE209. The apparent reaction rate constant (k _obs) increased with the proportion of the water in the system, enhancing the degradation of BDE209. In terms of degradation products, a high proportion of THF led to an accumulation of higher-brominated BDEs, inhibiting the further debromination of BDE209. The inhibitory effect of the solvent (THF) can be explained that water played a role of hydrogen donor during the reductive degradation of BDE209 in the THF/water system. However, the proportion of THF in the degradation system posed no effect on the BDE209 debromination pathway and debromination location. The difficulty of para-debromination was observed in all of the solvent systems.

Occurrence, removal and release characteristics of dissolved brominated flame retardants and their potential metabolites in various kinds of wastewater

The dissolved phase compound and congener specific distribution characteristics of three widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs) comprising 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 12 hydroxylated and methoxylated metabolites (OH- and MeO-BDEs), 3 hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were investigated in influents and effluents of various kinds of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), with varying source of wastewater and type of treatment, and nearby rivers in Korea. The concentration of total BFRs were the highest in industrial WWTPs nearby large industrial complexes specialized in heavy chemicals. The distribution of BFRs was differed according to composition of wastewater, with predominance of TBBPA in WWTPs with higher portion of inflowing industrial wastewater. Among HBCD diastereomers, γ-HBCD was dominant in industrial wastewater as consistent to the previous reports, however, similar contribution of α- and γ-HBCD was found in sewage and human wastewater. Through treatment process, PBDEs were the most effectively removed with a mean removal efficiency of 68.3%. HBCDs and TBBPA had removal efficiencies of 41.3% and 48.7%, respectively. The lowest removal efficiency (10.3%) was observed for PBDE metabolites and their concentration in effluent of human wastewater was even increased at maximum 1.9 fold compared with influent, implying the possibility of transformation during treatment. The estimated dissolved phase daily load of PBDEs was highest in sewage while that of TBBPA was highest in industrial wastewater.

Concentrations and patterns of hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polychlorinated biphenyls in arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) from Svalbard

Concentrations and patterns of hydroxylated (OH) polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in liver from arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) sampled from Svalbard 1997-2011 (n = 100). The most important OH-PBDE in the arctic foxes was 6-OH-BDE47 detected in 24% of the samples. Relationships between 6-OH-BDE47, δ(13)C and BDE47 suggest that 6-OH-BDE47 residues in arctic foxes are related to marine dietary input, while the relative importance of the metabolic/natural origin of this compound remains unclear. 4-OH-CB187 and 4-OH-CB146 were the main OH-PCBs among the analyzed compounds. The OH-PCB pattern in the present arctic foxes indicates that arctic foxes have a capacity to biotransform a wide range of PCBs of different structures. Formation and retention of OH-PCBs was tightly related to PCB exposure. Furthermore, ΣOH-PCB concentrations were four times higher in the leanest compared to the fattest foxes. Concentrations of 4-OH-CB187 and 4-OH-CB146 among the highest contaminated arctic foxes were similar to the previously reported concentrations for polar bears. Given the high endocrine disruptive potential of OH-PCBs, we suggest that endocrine system may be affected by the relatively high OH-PCB residues in the Svalbard arctic fox population.

Characterizing the sorption of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to cotton and polyester fabrics under controlled conditions

Cotton and polyester, physically and chemically different fabrics, were characterized for sorption of gas-phase polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images and BET specific surface area (BET-SSA) analysis showed cotton's high microsurface area; NMR analysis showed richness of hexose- and aromatic-carbon in cotton and polyester, respectively. Cotton and polyester sorbed similar concentrations of gas-phase PBDEs in chamber studies, when normalized to planar surface area. However, polyester concentrations were 20-50 times greater than cotton when normalized to BET-SSA, greater than the 10 times difference in BET-SSA. The difference in sorption between cotton and polyester is hypothesized to be due to 'dilution' due to cotton's large BET-SSA and/or greater affinity of PBDEs for aromatic-rich polyester. Similar fabric-air area normalized distribution coefficients (K'D, 10(3) to 10(4)m) for cotton and polyester support air-side controlled uptake under non-equilibrium conditions. K'D values imply that 1m(2) of cotton or polyester fabrics would sorb gas-phase PBDEs present in 10(3) to 10(4)m(3) of equivalent air volume at room temperature over one week, assuming similar air flow conditions. Sorption of PBDEs to fabrics has implications for their fate indoors and human exposure.

Levels, sources and chemical fate of persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere and snow along the western Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic continent is among the most pristine regions; yet various organic contaminants have been measured there routinely. Air and snow samples were collected during the austral spring (October-November, 2010) along the western Antarctic Peninsula and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to assess the relative importance of long-range transport versus local primary or secondary emissions. Highest concentrations of PCBs, PBDEs and DDTs were observed in the glacier's snow sample, highlighting the importance of melting glaciers as a possible secondary source of legacy pollutants to the Antarctic. In the atmosphere, contaminants were mainly found in the vapor phase (>65%). Hexachlorobenzene (33.6 pg/m(3)), PCBs (11.6 pg/m(3)), heptachlor (5.64 pg/m(3)), PBDEs (4.22 pg/m(3)) and cis-chlordane (2.43 pg/m(3)) were the most abundant contaminants. In contrast to other compounds, PBDEs seem to have originated from local sources, possibly the research station itself. Gas-particle partitioning for analytes were better predicted using the adsorption partitioning model than an octanol-based absorption approach. Diffusive flux calculations indicated that net deposition is the dominant pathway for PBDEs and chlordanes, whereas re-volatilization from snow (during melting or metamorphosis) was observed for PCBs and some OCPs.

How PBDEs Are Transformed into Dihydroxylated and Dioxin Metabolites Catalyzed by the Active Center of Cytochrome P450s: A DFT Study

Predicting metabolism of chemicals and potential toxicities of relevant metabolites remains a vital and difficult task in risk assessment. Recent findings suggested that polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) can be transformed into dihydroxylated and dioxin metabolites catalyzed by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs), whereas the mechanisms pertinent to these transformations remain largely unknown. Here, by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we probed the metabolic pathways of 2,2',4,4'-tetraBDE (BDE-47) using the active center model of CYPs (Compound I). Results show that BDE-47 is first oxidized to monohydroxylated products (HO-BDEs), wherein a keto-enol tautomerism is identified for rearrangement of the cyclohexenone intermediate. Dihydroxylation with HO-BDEs as precursors, has a unique phenolic H-abstraction and hydroxyl rebound pathway that is distinct from that for monohydroxylation, which accounts for the absence of epoxides in in vitro studies. Furthermore, we found only dihydroxylated PBDEs with heterophenyl -OH substituents ortho- and meta- to the ether bond serve as precursors for dioxins, which are evolved from aryl biradical coupling of diketone intermediates that are produced from dehydrogenation of the dihydroxylated PBDEs by Compound I. This study may enlighten the development of computational models that afford mechanism-based prediction of the xenobiotic biotransformation catalyzed by CYPs.

Application of aluminum-supported Pd, Rh, and Rh-Pd nanoparticles in supercritical carbon dioxide system for hydrodebromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Al-powder-supported Pd, Rh, and Rh-Pd catalysts were synthesized through a spontaneous redox reaction in aqueous solutions. These catalysts hydrodebrominated 4- and 4,4'-bromodiphenyl ethers in supercritical carbon dioxide at 200 atm CO2 containing 10 atm H2 and 80 °C in 1 h. Diphenyl ether was the major product of Pd/Al. Rh/Al and Rh-Pd/Al further hydrogenated two benzene rings of diphenyl ether to form dicyclohexyl ether. The hydrogenolysis of CO bonds on diphenyl ether over Rh/Al and Rh-Pd/Al was observed to generate cyclohexanol and cyclohexane (<1%). With respect to hydrodebromination efficiency and catalyst stability, Rh-Pd/Al among three catalysts is suggested to be used for ex situ degradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in supercritical carbon dioxide.

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers: Structure Determination and Trends in Antibacterial Activity

Antibacterial-guided fractionation of the Dictyoceratid sponges Lamellodysidea sp. and two samples of Dysidea granulosa yielded 14 polybrominated, diphenyl ethers including one new methoxy-containing compound (8). Their structures were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data of the natural product and their methoxy derivatives. Most of the compounds showed strong antimicrobial activity with low- to sub-microgram mL(-1) minimum inhibitory concentrations against drug-susceptible and drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium, and two compounds inhibited Escherichia coli in a structure-dependent manner.

Removal of oxyfluorfen from spiked soils using electrokinetic soil flushing with the surrounding arrangements of electrodes

This work reports the results of a study in which the remediation of soil that undergoes an accidental discharge of oxyfluorfen is carried out by using electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF). Two different electrode configurations were tested, consisting of several electrodes surrounding an electrode of different polarity (so-called 1A6C, one anode surrounded by six cathodes, and 1C6A, one cathode surrounded by six cathodes). A pilot plant scale was used (with a soil volume of 175dm(3)) to perform the studies. During the tests, different parameters were measured daily (flowrates, pH, electrical conductivity and herbicide concentration in different sampling positions). Furthermore, at the end of the test, a complete post-mortem analysis was carried out to obtain a 3-D map of the pollution, pH and electrical conductivity in the soil. The results demonstrate that electrode arrangement is a key factor for effective pollutant removal. In fact, the 1A6C configuration improves the removal rate by 41.3% versus the 27.0% obtained by the 1C6A configuration after a period of 35days. Finally, a bench mark comparison of this study of soil remediation polluted with 2,4-D allows for significant conclusions about the scale-up and full-scale application of this technology.

Effects of carbonaceous materials on microbial bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) in sediments

In this study, we investigated the influence of various types of carbonaceous materials (CMs) on the bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) to polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)-degrading microorganisms in CM-amended sediments. The microbial debromination ratio of BDE-47 was reduced by 92.8%-98.2% in the 5.0% CM-amended sediment compared with in sediment without CM amendment after 100 d of anaerobic incubation. The concentrations of lower brominated products also decreased when the content of CMs increased from 0.2% to 5.0%. The inhibitory effects of CMs on BDE-47 debromination were CM content- and characteristic-specific. The reciprocals of BDE-47 debromination ratios and lower brominated product concentrations showed positive linear correlations with CM contents in sediments (p<0.01), and the slopes of linear regression fitting generally correlated with specific surface areas (SSAs) of CMs. Desorption of BDE-47 from CMs indicated the declined desorbing fraction of BDE-47 was responsible for the reduction in BDE-47 bioavailability to microorganisms, thus decreasing its debromination in sediments amended with CMs. This study revealed that CM amendment could reduce the PBDE bioavailability to PBDE-degrading microorganisms in sediments, and it is expected to help deepen our understanding of the environmental behaviors and risks of PBDEs.

The environmental fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in western Taiwan and coastal waters: evaluation with a fugacity-based model

The environmental fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a group of flame retardants that are considered to be persistent organic pollutants (POPs), around the Zhuoshui River and Changhua County regions of Taiwan was assessed. An investigation into emissions, partitioning, and fate of selected PBDEs was conducted based on the equilibrium constant (EQC) fugacity model developed at Trent University, Canada. Emissions for congeners PBDE 47, PBDE 99, and PBDE 209 to air (4.9-92 × 10(-3) kg/h), soil (0.91-17.4 × 10(-3) kg/h), and water (0.21-4.04 × 10(-3) kg/h), were estimated by modifying previous models on PBDE emission rates by considering both industrial and domestic rates. It was found that fugacity modeling can give a reasonable estimation of the behavior, partitioning, and concentrations of PBDE congeners in and around Taiwan. Results indicate that PBDE congeners have a high affinity for partitioning into sediments then soils. As congener number decreases, the PBDEs then partition more readily into air. As the degree of bromination increases, congeners more readily partition to sediments. Sediments may then act as a long-term source of PBDEs which can be released back into the water column due to resuspension during storm events.

Theoretical Studies on Structures, Properties and Dominant Debromination Pathways for Selected Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers

The B3LYP/6-311+G(d)-SDD method, which considers the relativistic effect of bromine, was adopted for the calculations of the selected polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the present study, in which the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method was also applied. The calculated values and experimental data for structural parameters of the selected PBDEs were compared to find the suitable theoretical methods for their structural optimization. The results show that the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method can give the better results (with the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.0268 for the C–Br bond and 0.0161 for the C–O bond) than the B3LYP/6-311+G(d)-SDD method. Then, the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) method was applied to predict the structures for the other selected PBDEs (both neutral and anionic species). The lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the electron affinity are of a close relationship. The electron affinities (vertical electron affinity and adiabatic electron affinity) were discussed to study their electron capture abilities. To better estimate the conversion of configuration for PBDEs, the configuration transition states for BDE-5, BDE-22 and BDE-47 were calculated at the B3LYP/ 6-311+G(d) level in both gas phase and solution. The possible debromination pathway for BDE-22 were also studied, which have bromine substituents on two phenyl rings and the bromine on meta-position prefers to depart from the phenyl ring. The reaction profile of the electron-induced reductive debromination for BDE-22 were also shown in order to study its degradation mechanism.

Application of electrokinetic soil flushing to four herbicides: A comparison

In this work, four bench-scale plants containing soil spiked with four herbicides (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), oxyfluorfen, chlorsulfuron and atrazine) undergo treatment consisting of an electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF). Results clearly demonstrate that efficiency of EKSF depends on the chemical characteristic of the pesticide used. The amount of pesticide collected in the anode well is more significant than that collected in the cathode wells, indicating that the electromigration is much more important than drainage by electro-osmotic flux for this application. After 15 d of treatment, the 2,4-D is the pesticide most efficiently removed (95% of removal), while chlorsulfuron is the pesticide more resilient to the treatment. Additionally, volatilization was found to be a process of the major significance in the application of electrokinetic techniques to soil polluted with herbicides and because of that it should always be taken into account in the future design of full-scale processes.

Aerobic degradation of BDE-209 by Enterococcus casseliflavus: Isolation, identification and cell changes during degradation process

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is one of the most commonly used brominated flame retardants that have contaminated the environment worldwide. Microbial bioremediation has been considered as an effective technique to remove these sorts of persistent organic pollutants. Enterococcus casseliflavus, a gram-positive bacterium capable of aerobically transforming BDE-209, was isolated by our team from sediments in Guiyu, an e-waste dismantling area in Guangdong Province, China. To promote microbial bioremediation of BDE-209 and elucidate the mechanism behind its aerobic degradation, the effects of BDE-209 on the cell changes of E. casseliflavus were examined in this study. The experimental results demonstrated that the high cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of E. casseliflavus made the bacteria absorb hydrophobic BDE-209 more easily. E. casseliflavus responded to BDE-209 stress, resulting in an increase in cell membrane permeability and accumulation of BDE-209 inside the cell. The differential expression of intracellular protein was analyzed through two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). More than 50 differentially expressed protein spots were reproducibly detected, including 25 up, and 25 down regulated after a 4 days exposure. Moreover, the apoptotic-like cell changes were observed during E. casseliflavus mediated degradation of BDE-209 by means of flow cytometry.
