Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is considered to be the quintessential autoimmune disease. It has not been possible to induce SLE in animal models by DNA immunization or by challenge with anti-DNA antibodies. We herewith report a murine model of SLE-like disease induced by immunization of C3H.SW female mice with a common human monoclonal anti-DNA idiotype (16/6 idiotype). Following a booster injection with the 16/6 idiotype, high levels of murine anti-16/6 and anti-anti-16/6 antibodies (associated with anti-DNA activity) were detected in the sera of the immunized mice. Elevated titers of autoantibodies reacting with DNA, poly(I), poly(dT), ribonucleoprotein, autoantigens [Sm, SS-A (Ro), and SS-B (La)], and cardiolipin were noted. The serological findings were associated with increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukopenia, proteinuria, immune complex deposition in the glomerular mesangium, and sclerosis of the glomeruli. The immune complexes in the kidneys were shown to contain the 16/6 idiotype. This experimental SLE-like model may be used to elucidate the mechanisms underlying SLE.

Abstract
A single injection of viable Salmonella typhimurium SL3235, an avirulent organism blocked in the aromatic pathway, induced the generation of activated peritoneal macrophages in three different C3H mouse strains, including macrophage-defective C3H/HeJ mice. Macrophages obtained from immunized mice were cytotoxic for B16 melanoma cells, P815 mastocytoma cells, and TU-5 fibrosarcoma cells and microbicidal in vitro for the obligate, intracellular, protozoan parasite Leishmania major. The capacity of live SL3235 to activate C3H/HeJ macrophages contrasts with the failure of live Bacillus Calmette-Guérin to induce activated macrophages in this mouse strain. Although viable SL3235 were capable of fully activating cells of both normal and defective mice, a dose-dependent difference was observed in the number of organisms necessary for induction of tumoricidal macrophages in C3HeB/FeJ (normal) and C3H/HeJ (defective) animals. As few as 80 viable SL3235 were capable of activating C3HeB/FeJ macrophages whereas 5 X 10(4) organisms were required to activate C3H/HeJ macrophages. Maximal macrophage activation occurred 7 to 10 days after SL3235 inoculation in C3H/HeJ and C3HeB/FeJ mice. Acetone-killed cells of SL3235 had some but not all of the activity of the living Salmonella. A single in vivo injection of the nonviable preparation resulted in the induction of tumoricidal macrophages in C3HeB/FeJ but not in C3H/HeJ mice, even when tested over a wide dosage range. Injection of acetone-killed cells of SL3235 did, however, result in a population of primed macrophages in C3H/HeJ mice, as explanted cells could be induced to express activated macrophage effector activities after additional treatment in vitro with either LPS or IFN-gamma. Thus, in vivo administration of viable SL3235 is, by itself, capable of eliciting the full series of steps required for activation of C3H/HeJ macrophages, whereas killed SL3235 only provides signals sufficient to prime these defective macrophages for further activation in vitro. Abstract
We generated nucleotide sequences for H-2Kk and H-2Dk from the C3H mouse, as well as for a genomic clone of H-2Db, in order to conduct an evolutionary analysis of the H-2 genes from three haplotypes, k, d, and b. H-2Kk from both the C3H and AKR strains, H-2Kd, H-2Kb, H-2Dk, H-2Ld, H-2Dd, H-2Db, and H-2Dp DNA sequences were aligned, and the alignments used to construct phylogenetic trees inferring the evolutionary relationships among the nine genes by two independent methods. Both approaches yielded trees with similar topologies. In addition, the sequence alignments revealed patterns of nucleotide substitutions which implicate both point mutation and recombination in the divergence of the H-2 genes. Future considerations for evolutionary analysis of class I genes are discussed.

Abstract
BALB/c or C3H/He mice were inoculated i.v. with allogeneic spleen cells untreated or treated with neuraminidase. Appreciable or potent anti-allo-delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses were observed when mice were inoculated i.v. with untreated allogeneic cells or inoculated i.v. with those cells followed by s.c. immunization with untreated allogeneic cells. In contrast, i.v. inoculation of neuraminidase-treated allogeneic cells (presensitization) not only failed to induce any significant anti-allo-DTH responses but also abolished the capability of the animals to develop DTH responses after s.c. immunization, indicating the tolerance induction. This tolerance was alloantigen-specific, and rapidly inducible and long lasting. The induction of suppressor cell activity was demonstrated in tolerant mice. However, this activity was associated only with the tolerant state around 4 to 7 days after the i.v. presensitization, but was no longer detected in mice more than 14 days after the presensitization, although these mice exhibited complete tolerant state. When spleen cells from such tolerant mice were transferred i.v. into 600 R x-irradiated syngeneic recipient mice alone or together with normal syngeneic spleen cells, these tolerant spleen cells themselves failed to induce DTH responses but did not exhibit suppressive effect on the generation of DTH responses induced by normal spleen cells co-transferred. These results indicate that i.v. administration of neuraminidase-treated allogeneic cells results in the induction of alloantigen-specific tolerance which is not always associated with the induction of suppressor cell activity but rather with the elimination or functional impairment of alloantigen-specific clones.

Abstract
Among lymphoreticular cells, Langerhans cells and splenic dendritic cells stand alone in their capacity, when hapten-derivatized, to induce vigorous immune responses, irrespective of route of inoculation, including intravenous. We have examined the comparative efficiency of relatively purified populations of Langerhans cells and their epidermal companions, keratinocytes, to induce alloimmunity when injected intravenously into adult mice. It was found that as few as 100 BALB/c Langerhans cells injected intravenously into C3H mice are capable of inducing specific sensitization as evidenced by subsequent accelerated rejection of BALB/c skin grafts. By contrast, 10,000 BALB/c keratinocytes failed to immunize similarly injected C3H recipients. These results emphasize the unparalleled capacity of Langerhans cells to induce sensitization, and they point to Langerhans cells, among cells within the epidermal compartment, as dominant in the alloimmunogenic potential of skin grafts.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the activation of murine macrophages to a fully tumoricidal state requires that specific environmental signals be delivered to the macrophage in a stepwise manner: a "priming" signal first renders the macrophage responsive to a second or "trigger" signal. One potent "priming" signal has been identified as the T cell-derived lymphokine, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and one often used "trigger" signal is lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the endotoxin derived from Gram-negative bacteria. In these studies, endotoxin-responsive C3H/OuJ (Lps(n)) and endotoxin-hyporesponsive C3H/HeJ (Lps(d)) macrophages were exposed in vitro to recombinant IFN-gamma (rIFN-gamma) and various preparations of endotoxin or purified lipid A-associated proteins (LAP). The resultant tumoricidal responses were evaluated to define the activation requirements of murine macrophages and to examine further the LPS defect exhibited by C3H/HeJ mice. The findings presented herein demonstrate that C3H/OuJ macrophages primed by rIFN-gamma respond to protein-free LPS (phenol-water extracted LPS), protein-rich LPS (butanol-extracted LPS), or purified LAP. In contrast, rIFN-gamma-primed C3H/HeJ macrophages failed to become cytolytic with phenol-water extracted LPS, but could be rendered fully tumoricidal if either butanol-extracted LPS or LAP were used as "second signals." These data indicate that C3H/HeJ macrophages are fully responsive to the priming effects of IFN-gamma, but remain restricted in their capacity to recognize protein-free LPS as a second signal. Alternate second signals, such as LAP, may provide a compensatory pathway by which these macrophages are rendered fully tumoricidal.

Abstract
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) has been shown to regulate several immunologic functions. Since tumor necrosis factor (TNF) shares many biologic properties with IL-1, we have investigated here the role of TNF in the modulation of the immune response. We have thus tested low doses of human recombinant TNF-alpha (hu rTNF-alpha) for its capacity to enhance the in vivo antibody responses evaluated at the cellular level in the hemolytic plaque assay. It was found that hu rTNF-alpha, like human IL-1 beta, is able to enhance the immune response to a T cell-dependent antigen (sheep red blood cells). Interestingly, at variance with human recombinant IL-1 beta, hu rTNF-alpha was not able to enhance the in vivo antibody response to a T cell-independent antigen (type III pneumococcal polysaccharide). These results suggest that low levels of TNF may have a role in the modulation of the immune response in vivo and shed new light on the biologic significance of this mediator.

Abstract
Monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibodies were prepared against monoclonal antibodies (mAb103) specific to the synthetic polypeptide antigen (T,G)-A-L. A cell line was established by the stimulation of C3H.SW mouse T cells with one of the monoclonal anti-idiotypes (mAbA-6) that reacted with both mAb103 and conventional (T,G)-A-L-specific antibodies. The T cell line proliferated specifically in the presence of the homologous mAbA-6 and to a lesser degree when triggered with (T,G)-A-L. The line could help (T,G)-A-L primed B cells in the production of (T,G)-A-L-specific antibodies when stimulated in vitro with either (T,G)-A-L or mAbA-6. Clones obtained from the line were stimulated and maintained in culture in presence of mAbA-6 whereas others were stimulated and grown in the presence of (T,G)-A-L. Both types of clones proliferated only in the presence of mAbA-6 although (T,G)-A-L could inhibit efficiently and specifically the latter proliferation. A significant number of the (T,G)-A-L-stimulated clones could collaborate with (T,G)-A-L primed B cells in the presence of either (T,G)-A-L or mAbA-6 for the production of specific antibodies. Immunoblotting experiments indicated that mAbA-6 reacted with both the T cell receptor of the mAbA-6-specific T cell line and of a (T,G)-A-L-specific T cell line but not with that of a line specific to a nonrelated antigen.

Abstract
Continuous gastric intubation of mice with the T cell-dependent antigen sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) leads to a state of systemic unresponsiveness to parenteral SRBC challenge, a state termed oral tolerance. The systemic unresponsiveness of mice rendered orally tolerant to SRBC, however, is converted to humoral immune responsiveness by adoptive transfer of effector T contrasuppressor (Tcs) cells. In this study, the authors have isolated and characterized the Tcs cell subset, from the spleens of orally immunized mice, which abrogates oral tolerance. This Tcs cell is a novel cell type, which can be separated from functional T suppressor (Lyt-2+) and T helper (L3T4+) cells, and the effector Tcs cell exhibits a Lyt-1+, 2-, L3T4- phenotype. Furthermore, contrasuppression is not mediated by B cells, including those of the Lyt-1+ phenotype. Adoptive transfer of splenic Lyt-1+, 2-, L3T4- T cells from C3H/HeJ mice given oral SRBC for 21 to 28 days and splenic Lyt-1+, 2-, L3T4- T cells of C3H/HeN mice orally immunized for a shorter interval abrogated oral tolerance. Furthermore, separation of Lyt-1+ T cells into L3T4+ and L3T4- subsets by flow cytometry resulted in Lyt-1+, L3T4+ T cells with helper but not contrasuppressor function, whereas the Lyt-1+, L3T4- T cell fraction abrogated oral tolerance even though it was without helper activity. This Tcs cell subset was also effective when added to cultures of tolerized spleen cells derived from SRBC-fed mice. The effector Tcs cells are antigen-specific, because Tcs cells from SRBC-immunized mice reverse tolerance to SRBC but not to horse erythrocytes (HRBC), and Tcs cells from HRBC-immunized mice reverse tolerance to HRBC but not to SRBC. When splenic T3 (CD3)-positive T cells (Lyt-1+, 2-, and L3T4-) were separated into Vicia villosa-adherent and nonadherent subpopulations, active contrasuppression was associated with the T3-positive and Vicia villosa-adherent T cell fraction. Thus, a distinct Lyt-1+, 2-, L3T4- T cell subset that contains a T3-T cell receptor complex, which can regulate oral tolerance, is present in spleens of orally immunized mice.

Abstract
Immature (L3T4-/Lyt-2- "double-negative") thymocytes were separated into several functionally distinct fractions based on their expression of IL2 receptors, Thy-1 and CD3. The majority (60-70%) of double-negative thymocytes in young adult mice lack detectable IL2 receptor expression, have high levels of Thy-1 and rapidly "progress" to a L3T4+ or L3T4+/Lyt-2+ stage when cultured for 20 h in simple medium. In contrast, the IL2 receptor-positive fraction retains the double-negative phenotype for as long as it survives in culture and addition of IL2 has little or no effect on such cells. IL2 does generate strong proliferation from a fraction of cells expressing low levels of Thy-1, but not detectable IL2 receptors. Such culture generates an unusual population of double-negative cells that expresses the pan-B cell molecule B220 and which kill both the NK target cell line YAC-1 and the NK-resistant line EL4. This Thy-1-low fraction includes all of the double-negative thymocytes capable of T cell reconstitution. Thy-1-low fraction could be further separated into two populations with regards to CD3 expression. CD3- but not CD3+ population could reconstitute mature T cells, indicating that Thy-1-low, IL2R- and CD3- cells are the most enriched population of intrathymic T cell progenitors.

Abstract
A new monoclonal antibody, MIDC-8, is described which shows a comparable tissue distribution as the recently described NLDC-145 antibody. It recognizes interdigitating cells, veiled cells and Langerhans cells in lymphoid organs and the skin of the mouse. In contrast to NLDC-145 it recognizes a cytoplasmic component of these cell types. Its distribution is more restricted to the T cell-dependent areas than NLDC-145. Isolation of dendritic cells from lymph nodes, spleen and thymus revealed that both antibodies react with the in vitro isolated dendritic cells. The results show that these antibodies can be used to study dendritic cells in vitro and emphasize the relationship between the in vivo interdigitating cells of the T cell areas and the in vitro isolated dendritic cells.

Abstract
C3H/HeJ mice are hyporesponsive to the biologic effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The defect in the strain of mice is believed to be due to the expression of a mutant allele designated Lpsd at the chromosome four locus. The molecular basis of this hyporesponsiveness is not known, but it may result from some defective membrane signal transductions. To examine this possibility, we compared the abilities of interleukin 1 (IL-1) production by C3H/HeJ macrophages with those by C3H/He macrophages (LPS responsive) after stimulation with the calcium ionophore A23187 or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). A23187 induced IL-1 production by C3H/He macrophages, but it did not induce IL-1 production by C3H/HeJ macrophages and neither did LPS. However, it had the ability to increase intracellular free Ca2+ in C3H/HeJ macrophages as well as in C3H/He macrophages, this being examined by the changes in cytosolic Ca2+ in the macrophages by using Quin 2. In contrast, PMA was able to induce IL-1 production by both C3H/He and C3H/HeJ macrophages without increasing intracellular Ca2+. Since polymyxin B did not inhibit A23187- or PMA-induced IL-1 production by C3H/He macrophages, these results are not due to the little amount of LPS in culture medium, but due to their own characteristics. A calmodulin antagonist W-7 effectively inhibited A23187-induced IL-1 production by C3H/He macrophages. However, it hardly inhibited LPS-induced IL-1 production except at high concentration, and it caused no inhibition of the PMA-stimulated one. These results suggest that the blocking sites expressed phenotypically by the Lpsd are shared by LPS- and A23187-stimulated cellular processes, although the actions of LPS and A23187 are different from each other. In addition to the direct study with LPS or lipid A, A23187 should provide another useful approach to clarify the molecular mechanisms of Lpsd defect in C3H/HeJ macrophages.

Abstract
The immunization of C57BL/6 responder mice with spleen cells from H-2-matched BALB.B donors, which differ by multiple non-H-2 histocompatibility (H) antigens, results in the generation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) that are specific for only a limited number of immunodominant antigens. Previous analysis of the genes encoding these dominant antigens has not mapped these genes to any of the non-H-2 H loci defined by congenic strains. It would have been expected that the histogenetic techniques employed for congenic strain selection would have preferentially identified the "strongest" H antigens. Therefore, we have investigated the possibility that immunodominant antigens do not belong to the class of non-H-2 H antigens encoded by genes mapping to H loci defined and mapped by congenic strains. The first experiments were aimed at identifying antigens that were expressed by independently derived inbred strains and were cross-reactive with the immunodominant cytotoxic T cell target (CTT-1) antigen of BALB.B. Strong cross-reaction with the C3H.SW (H-2b) strain was observed; the C3H gene encoding this antigen was mapped with BXH recombinant inbred strains. Contrary to the mapping of the CTT-1 gene to chromosome 1 in BALB.B, the C3H gene was shown to map to either chromosome 4 or chromosome 7. This result indicates that identical, or at least extensively cross-reactive, non-H-2 antigens may be encoded by genes mapping to independently segregating loci in different inbred strains. The tissue distribution of immunodominant antigens was approached by determining the reactivity of CTL specific for these antigens with either lymphoid-derived or fibroblast-derived targets. These CTL effectively lysed lymphoblast and lymphoid tumor targets but did not lyse an SV40-transformed fibroblast line that was shown to be efficiently lysed by CTL specific for non-H-2 H antigens defined by congenic strains. Therefore, it was concluded that immunodominant antigens detected by B6 anti-BALB.B CTL have a restricted tissue distribution in comparison to non-H-2 H antigens defined by congenic strains. The implications of these results for our understanding of the origin and heterogeneity of non-H-2 cell-surface antigen recognized by effector T cells are discussed.

Abstract
The role of murine macrophages (M phi) and that of splenic dendritic cells (DC) were investigated in the antigen-specific proliferative response of memory T cells of mice primed with key-hole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) 6 weeks or more before. Peritoneal M phi, whether expressing Ia antigens or not, did not function as autonomous accessory cells (A cells). A-cell activity of the spleen adherent cell population, which comprised M phi in the majority and DC in the minority, was abolished by eliminating DC with a DC-specific monoclonal antibody and complement, and regained by the addition of a small number of DC. Though M phi did not function as autonomous A cells, they augmented the proliferative response in the presence of a small number of DC. This occurred not only in the presence of free antigen, but also when DC and/or M phi were pulsed with antigen. A culture supernatant of M phi having interleukin-1 activity was effective in enhancing the proliferation of T cells which responded to antigen-pulsed DC. On the other hand, interleukin-2 did not replace DC even in the presence of antigen-pulsed Ia+ M phi. We also investigated recently primed T cells, but no evidence was obtained in favor of the competence of M phi as autonomous A cells.

Abstract
Spleen cells from irradiated, bone marrow-reconstituted mice were tested for their ability to mediate antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity against P815 target (ADCC-P815), ADCC against sheep red blood cells (ADCC-SRBC), and natural killer (NK) activity judged as YAC-1 lysis at different times after bone marrow reconstitution. Donor-derived ADCC-P815 effectors were found to appear in the spleens 10-12 days after bone marrow reconstitution simultaneously with the appearance of donor-derived NK cells. NK cells recently derived from bone marrow are known to express the Thy-1 antigen; the phenotype of the "early" ADCC-P815 effectors was found to be the same as that of NK cells, i.e., Thy-1+, asialo-GM1+. These data suggest that ADCC-P815 effector cells belong to the NK cell population. ADCC-SRBC, in contrast to ADCC-P815 and NK activity, was already high on Day 7 after bone marrow reconstitution. However, it was mediated partly by recipient-derived effectors. ADCC-SRBC effectors were characterized to be different from ADCC-P815 effectors.

Abstract
Multiple previous studies have demonstrated significant alterations of immunologic parameters associated with mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) infection, but effects of the virus on mucosal lymphoid cells have not been examined. Coincident with a natural outbreak of MHV at our institution, we noted alterations in immunoglobulin secretion by mature Peyer's patch B cells under an inductive stimulus provided by dendritic cells and mitogen-activated T cells (DC-T). MHV was isolated from mice affected during the outbreak, and experimental infection of mice with the isolate consistently resulted in failures of immunoglobulin secretion by cocultures of Peyer's patch DC-T and B cells. In subsequent experiments, MHV appeared to negatively affect DC-T more than B cells. Therefore, the effects of inapparent MHV infection on experimental mucosal immune responses can result from natural infection and can be experimentally reproduced.

Abstract
The stimulating effect of a synthetic nonapeptide (fragment 163-171) of human interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) on antibody responses to both T helper-dependent and T helper-independent antigens was investigated. It was shown that the nonapeptide enhanced the antibody response, as evaluated in the hemolytic plaque assay, of spleen cells from mice immunized with sheep red blood cells (SRBC). The activity of the 163-171 peptide on the primary response to SRBC was dose-dependent, being maximal when the peptide was inoculated at 100 mg/kg together with the antigen. Moreover, the 163-171 peptide was also effective in enhancing the secondary response to SRBC. The effect of the 163-171 peptide was to augment the frequency of cells specific for the antigen, inasmuch as no increase was ever observed in spleen cell numbers after treatment. In all these studies, human recombinant IL-1 beta gave effects qualitatively comparable to those of the 163-171 peptide, with a maximal activity at 20 ng/kg. Both the 163-171 peptide and human recombinant IL-1 beta were also able to enhance the in vivo immune response to a T helper-independent antigen such as SIII, a poorly immunogenic polysaccharidic antigen from Streptococcus pneumoniae type III. It can therefore be proposed that this synthetic nonapeptide of human IL-1 beta may represent a good candidate for use as adjuvant in vaccines.

Abstract
We have studied the ribosomal RNA content in murine peritoneal macrophages activated to cytotoxicity with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), interferon-beta (IFN-beta), and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). Total RNA was purified from IFN-alpha, -beta, or -gamma activated macrophages, and Northern blot analysis was performed by using subcloned fragments specific for precursor rRNA (pre-rRNA) as probes. All types of interferon (alpha, beta, gamma) at the doses normalized for induction of cytotoxic activity caused accumulation of 45S, 41S, and 36S pre-rRNA. In contrast, the levels of 32S pre-RNA and 28S, 5.8S, and 18S mature rRNA were not affected by IFN treatment. Therefore, the accumulation of pre-rRNA in macrophages activated to cytotoxicity by IFN was not paralleled by changes in total content of mature rRNA. No accumulation of pre-rRNA upon IFN treatment was found in a murine fibroblast cell line (L929 cells) or in a macrophage cell line (GG2EE) immortalized from bone marrow of C3H/HeJ mice. Neither of those cell lines become cytotoxic in response to IFN. Overall, our data support the concept that IFN acts selectively on the mechanism controlling the levels of some pre-rRNA and that the mechanism of IFN action involves the post-transcriptional control of ribosomal gene expression.

Abstract
The murine epidermis is a heterogeneous epithelium composed of keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and a recently described subpopulation (2-3%) of bone-marrow-derived leukocytes with a dendritic morphology and the cell surface phenotype Thy-1+, L3T4-, Lyt-2-. Previous studies have demonstrated that cell lines derived from freshly explanted Thy-1+ dendritic epidermal cells (DEC) have abundant mRNA for rearranged T-cell receptor (TCR) gamma-chain genes. Analysis of Thy-1+ DEC in situ, freshly isolated cell suspensions of Thy-1+ DEC, and long-term Thy-1+ DEC lines demonstrated that 100% of the Thy-1+ DEC reacted with a monoclonal antibody to the epsilon chain of the murine T3 complex and that 40-60% of resident Thy-1+ DEC were also reactive with an antiserum to the TCR gamma chain. Two Thy-1+ DEC lines expressed a disulfide-linked 70-kDa molecule that could be precipitated with an anti-gamma-chain antiserum and could be coprecipitated with an antiserum to the T3 delta chain; the molecule appeared as a single 34-kDa band under reducing conditions. The phenotype of Thy-1+ DEC (T3+, L3T4-, Lyt-2-, TCR gamma chain+) thus resembles that of the recently described subpopulation of murine and human lymphocytes that have been identified in the thymus, peripheral blood, and fetal blood.

Abstract
Experiments were performed to analyze the mechanism by which lipopolysaccharide (LPS) modulates the expression of Ia by murine peritoneal macrophages in vivo. We investigated the effect of LPS on Ia expression in T cell deficient mice by using the congenitally athymic nude mouse model. Injection (i.p) of LPS into athymic (nu/nu) mice resulted in a dramatic increase in the expression and biosynthesis of Ia by peritoneal macrophages 7 days after injection. The magnitude and kinetics of this induction were equivalent to increases observed after LPS injection of euthymic (nu/+) mice. Viable Listeria monocytogenes also increased Ia expression in athymic mice, but in contrast to the induction observed in euthymic mice at 3 and 7 days after injection, increased Ia expression was not seen until 7 days. Ia induction by either LPS or L. monocytogenes in athymic mice was not due to the presence or development of mature T cell function as defined by assays for T cell mitogenesis and interleukin 2 production. We conclude that increased macrophage Ia expression by LPS and L. monocytogenes in vivo can occur in the absence of mature functioning T cells.
