Comparison between urinary oestrogen assay and serial ultrasonic cephalometry in assessment of fetal growth retardation

Urinary oestrogen assay and serial ultrasonic cephalometry were performed on 284 patients who were considered on clinical grounds to be at risk of having a growth-retarded fetus. It was found that ultrasonic cephalometry was significantly better than oestrogens in diagnosing the small-for-dates baby, but that there was no significant difference between the two methods in predicting perinatal asphyxia. Of the 14 stillbirths, three were in the normal ultrasonic growth rate group and five had normal oestrogen excretion. Both methods were found to be of value in the diagnosis of fetal growth-retardation, although cephalometry would seem to have some advantages, especially in distinguishing between fetal growth-retardation and mistaken maturity.

Amplitude, position, timing and velocity as cues in reproduction of movement

In three experiments the method of average error was used to study the reproductions of amplitudes of standard horizontal arm movements ranging from 45° to 125°. Response sensitivity, in terms of mean difference limens and absolute errors, was relatively precise and constant over the range of movement. However, constant errors exhibited a definite trend in that small movements were constantly overestimated and large ones were underestimated. It was also found that the starting and terminal positions of a movement were important cues in movement reproduction, whereas timing ability and movement velocity seemed unrelated to accuracy.

Comparison of ultrasound cephalometry, radiology, and liquor studies in patients with unknown confinement dates

The accuracy of predicting fetal maturity by ultrasound cephalometry, radiology, and liquor studies in patients with unknown confinement dates has been compared. The best prediction was given by ultrasound cephalometry. Liquor studies were least helpful.

Acccumulation of labeled zinc, strontium, and calcium in bone injuries

A significantly increased uptake of 65Zn administered intravenously was detected in healing bones of rats compared with control rats. The parameters used for measuring osteogenesis included: histologic examination, radiographic studies, and Ca 45 uptake in bone. The accumulation of 65Zn appeared to be correlated with bone formation. The data suggest a mobilization of zinc to the site of bone repair.
