Abstract
The membrane potential in the blastomeres of dividing Triturus egg cells increases progressively from the first cleavage to the late morula stages. Both the animal and vegetal poles show the same increasing trend in potential; there is no significant potential difference between them. Upon first cell cleavage, the total resistance of the egg cell surface in contact with the exterior decreases to about one-tenth of its value before cleavage, and then remains rather constant up to the late morula stage. The specific resistance of this membrane surface drops rather abruptly upon first cleavage, and rises progressively during the morula stage. The resistance of the junctional membrane surface of the blastomeres, that is, the membrane formed at the former planes of cleavage, is small in relation to that of the cell surface in contact with the exterior. As a result, the blastomeres are electrically coupled throughout all stages of embryonic development examined.

Abstract
The enteric microvilli of the cat, bat, and man are coated with a conspicuous layer composed of fine filaments radiating from the outer dense leaflet of the plasma membrane. This surface coat is prominent on the absorptive cells but is not so thick on the goblet and undifferentiated crypt cells. In other species the surface coat is poorly developed or inconsistent, but all intestinal microvilli have traces of such a coating over the tips and sides of the microvilli. Tissues prepared by the ordinary sectioning techniques for electron microscopy usually reveal this component when stained with uranyl acetate followed by lead staining. The surface coat is intensely periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive and reacts with Alcian blue or Hale's colloidal iron stain for acid mucopolysaccharide. It is also stained by toluidine blue at low pH. Repeated washings or incubation with various chemical agents have failed to remove or markedly alter the appearance of the coating, but extruded cells undergoing autolysis lose their surface coats. The stability, consistent presence, and intimate association of the mucopolysaccharide coat suggest that it may be an integral part of the plasmalemma rather than an "extraneous coat."

Abstract
Urinary 5-S-cysteinyldopa (5-S-CD) has been used as a biochemical marker of melanoma metastasis. A method was developed for determining the eumelanin-related metabolites 5(6)-hydroxy-6(5)-methyoxyindole-2-carboxylic acids (5H6MI2C and 6H5MI2C) in small volumes of serum. We compared these indoles and 5-S-CD regarding the correlation of their production in melanoma, circulation in blood, and excretion in urine, with the weight of highly pigmented, B16 mouse melanoma. An excellent correlation was found between the serum concentration of 5H6MI2C + 6H5MI2C (r = 0.92) and 5-S-CD (r = 0.89) and tumor weight. However, the urinary excretion of 5H6MI2C + 6H5MI2C and 5-S-CD did not show any significant correlation. These results suggest that 5H6MI2C + 6H5MI2C and 5-S-CD in serum may better reflect melanoma progression than those in urine. Furthermore, comparison of the contents of these melanin-related metabolites between highly pigmented and less pigmented B16 melanomas suggests that 5-S-CD may be accumulated in pigmented melanoma by virtue of binding to melanin and that catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) may play a regulatory role in pigmentation.
