Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether the distribution of Fcgamma receptor IIa, IIIa, and IIIb polymorphisms confers a risk factor for disease susceptibility, and correlates with the clinical characteristics and serological parameters of patients with SLE in Taiwan. METHODS Genotyping of Fcgamma receptors IIa H/R131, IIIa F/V158, and IIIb NA1/NA2 was performed in 302 patients with SLE and 311 healthy blood donor controls. The distribution of Fcgamma receptor IIa, IIIa, and IIIb genotypes in patients and controls was analysed. Frequencies of three Fcgamma receptor polymorphisms were also compared between lupus patients with and without different clinical manifestations and autoantibodies. RESULTS No significant skewing in the distribution of Fcgamma RIIa H/R131, Fcgamma RIIIa F/V158, and Fcgamma RIIIb NA1/NA2 was found between patients and controls in Taiwan. The following clinical associations were found: Fcgamma RIIIb NA1/NA1 protected against neuropsychiatric lupus (p = 0.028) but conferred susceptibility to discoid rash (p<0.005); increased Fcgamma RIIIa V/V158 was associated with infections (p = 0.039); increased Fcgamma RIIa H/H131 was associated with earlier onset of lupus (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION Fcgamma receptor IIa, IIIa, and IIIb polymorphisms may be responsible for the development of distinct manifestations of lupus patients in Taiwan, but there is no significantly skewed distribution in the susceptibility to lupus as a whole.

Abstract
Lattice constants (LCs) of all possible 96 apatite compounds, A(5)(BO(4))(3)C, constituted by A[double bond]Ba(2+), Ca(2+), Cd(2+), Pb(2+), Sr(2+), Mn(2+); B[double bond]As(5+), Cr(5+), P(5+), V(5+); and C[double bond]F(1-), Cl(1-), Br(1-), OH(1-), are predicted from their elemental ionic radii, using pattern recognition (PR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) techniques. In particular, by a PR study it is demonstrated that ionic radii predominantly govern the LCs of apatites. Furthermore, by using ANN techniques, prediction models of LCs a and c are developed, which reproduce well the measured LCs (R(2)=0.98). All the literature reported on 30 pure and 22 mixed apatite compounds are collected and used in the present work. LCs of all possible 66 new apatites (assuming they exist) are estimated by the developed ANN models. These proposed new apatites may be of interest to biomedical research especially in the design of new apatite biomaterials for bone remodeling. Similarly these techniques may also be applied in the study of interface growth behaviors involving other biomaterials.

Abstract
Full length cDNA of human IL-11 was synthesized by DNA synthesizer. An expression plasmid, pGENYk, containing the recombinant DNA fragment, was linearized and transformed into Pichia pastoris. This recombinant gene was highly expressed in this yeast, and the expression product was purified by a three-step chromatography method. Analysis of the purified recombination protein with SDS-PAGE, Western blot and biological activities showed that the activity of the protein was the same as the Neumega expressed in E.coli.

Abstract
In this study, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system operated repetitively in flow injection analysis (FIA) mode, is reported. Four immobilization approaches of seven different methods include: (i) physical adsorption; (ii) two thioamine thiolation methods, using cysteamine and cystamine for gold chemisorption and further coupling; (iii) two oxidized dextran spacer methods, coupling of cysteamine and cystamine thiolated QCM surface with periodate-oxidized dextran for further Schiff acid-base reaction; and (iv) two thiol-gold chemisorption-based self-assembled monolayer (SAM), applying short-chain, C(3), and long-chain, C(11), mercapto fatty acids to insolubilize human serum albumin (HSA) on QCM surface. Effects of these protein immobilization methods on FIA immunoassay of anti-HSA were compared. At the 0.01 mg/ml anti-HSA level, the lowest analyte concentration tested, the SAM using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid as QCM surface activating agent generated a larger frequency shift than the other immobilization methods. This implied that the use of thiolated long-chain fatty acid constructed as self-assembled monolayer may thereby potentially be a useful protein immobilization method in QCM-FIA application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, temporary tattoos instead of permanent tattoos have become popular worldwide. Although contact allergy to temporary henna tattoos appears to be rare in the past, it is progressively more commonly reported. PATIENTS Four Taiwanese patients of allergic contact dermatitis following application of temporary tattoos were patch tested and they were followed up for 1 year after treatment. RESULTS All four of the tested patients were positive to paraphenylenediamine. At 1-year follow-up, all four patients still showed various degrees of remnant hyperpigmentation on their previous tattooed areas. CONCLUSION Temporary tattoos may pose similar risks of allergic reactions associated with permanent tattoos. A high risk of prolonged post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after allergic contact dermatitis from temporary tattoos should also be alerted, especially in Asian skin type.

Abstract
Orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) approach has shown success in hyperspectral image classification. Recently, the feasibility of applying OSP to multispectral image classification was also demonstrated via SPOT (Satellite Pour 1'Observation de la Terra) and Landsat (Land Satellite) images. Since an MR (magnetic resonance) image sequence is also acquired by multiple spectral channels (bands), this paper presents a new application of OSP in MR image classification. The idea is to model an MR image pixel in the sequence as a linear mixture of substances (such as white matter, gray matter, cerebral spinal fluid) of interest from which each of these substances can be classified by a specific subspace projection operator followed by a desired matched filter. The experimental results show that OSP provides a promising alternative to existing MR image classification techniques.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A descriptive study of concurrent extraspinal fractures collected prospectively during initial hospital care. OBJECTIVES To examine the frequency and related characteristics of concurrent extraspinal fractures among patients with a new onset of spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING Model SCI care systems throughout the United States. METHODS A consecutive sample of 5711 subjects admitted to the National SCI Database between 1986-1995 was recruited to estimate the incidence of extraspinal fractures associated with acute SCI, stratified by anatomic sites, demographics, and injury related characteristics. RESULTS Of 5711 subjects, 1585 (28%) patients had extraspinal fractures; 580 (37%) patients had more than one fracture site. The most common region of fractures was chest, followed by lower extremity, upper extremity, head, others, and pelvis. The overall incidence rate was higher for women than men, for whites than non-whites, for paraplegics than tetraplegics, and for those injured in motor vehicle crashes than others. Compared with patients having single fracture, those who had multiple fractures were likely to be white, paraplegic, and injured in motor vehicle crashes. There was no age difference in the incidence of concurrent fractures, single or multiple. CONCLUSIONS Extraspinal fractures are not uncommon at the same time as SCI. The fracture occurrence varies by gender, race, injury level, and etiology of injury. The knowledge of these associated factors will aid in early recognition of fractures, preventing complications, and facilitating rapid mobilization and rehabilitation outcomes among persons with SCI.

Abstract
Spontaneous discharges of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) neurons were extracellularly recorded by multi-barrelled microelectrodes in urethane-anesthetized rats. A total of 145 neurons were recorded: 33 were cardiovascular, 31 were nociceptive modulating, and 81 were unknown functional. The cardiovascular neurons were electrophysiologically identified through activating baroreceptor reflex by electrical stimulation of the aortic nerve and by intravenous injection of phenylephrine. Of the 33 cardiovascular neurons, 25 (76%) increased in firing rate after iontophoretical application of corticosterone sulfate (CORT), and 8 (24%) failed to respond. Of the 31 nociceptive modulating neurons excited by noxious stimulation, the firing rate decreased in 19 (64%), increased in 2 (6%), and did not respond in 10 (30%) after iontophoresis of CORT. Of the remaining 81 unknown functional neurons, 32 (40%) were excited, 5 (6%) inhibited, and 44 (54%) were not affected by CORT. These results demonstrate that CORT may modulate the activities of the neurons in RVLM through fast non-genomical effect, suggesting that the mechanism of the fast actions of CORT may play an important role in integration of the cardiovascular, nociceptive modulating activity under some conditions such as stress.

Abstract
The extension of the phases of the structure factors of the organic crystal C(25)H(25)NO(2) from 77 starting individual phases using the maximum-entropy method is reported. These starting phases were determined from 90 experimental triplet phases calculated from 215 measured psi-scan three-beam and four-beam diffraction profiles obtained with a rotating-anode X-ray source, where the psi scans were around the reciprocal-lattice vectors of the 001, 002 and 003 reflections. The extension of the structure factors with phase values was carried out using the maximum-entropy method for 2040 measured two-beam Bragg diffraction intensities with 77 starting phases and the symmetry of the space group as the constraints. Use of structure-factor triplets as constraints for entropy maximization was also attempted. The minimum chi(2) criteria were applied to the maximum-entropy extrapolation to discern the best phase set to be used as the new constraints for the next step of generating new phases. With this phase-extension procedure, more than 100 phases were determined and an electron-density map at 1.97 A was deduced.

Abstract
We have directly measured the retardance versus temperature for single-crystal quartz (SiO(2)) and magnesium fluoride (MgF(2)) at wavelengths of 633, 788, 1318, and 1539 nm and over a temperature range of 24-80 degrees C. To our knowledge, the temperature dependence of retardance for these two materials has not been directly measured. We compared our direct measurements of the normalized temperature derivative of the retardance gamma with derived values from previously reported indirect measurements and found our results to be in agreement and our measurement uncertainties to be typically a factor of 4 smaller. Our overall mean value for gamma(SiO(2)) is -1.23 x 10(-4) with a combined standard uncertainty of 0.02 x 10(-4) and little wavelength dependence over the 633-1539-nm range. Our overall mean value for gamma(MgF(2)) is -5.37 x 10(-5) with a combined standard uncertainty of 0.17 x 10(-5) and with a small wavelength dependence over the 633-1539-nm range.

Abstract
Grandparent behaviors in the United States and the Republic of China are examined to identify curriculum themes for helping them adjust to their changing role. The 3,286 non-consanguineous subjects included Chinese (n = 751), African Americans (n = 777), Caucasian Americans (n = 1,086), and Mexican Americans (n = 672). Analyses were performed using 1) Generation with three levels (grandparent, parent, and grandchild) and 2) Culture with four levels (Chinese, African American, Caucasian American, and Mexican American). The results revealed significant differences in perceptions about grandparents across cultures as well as between generations within cultures. All three generations reported grandparent strengths and needs. Specific guidelines and curriculum topics are recommended for education to support grandparent development.

Abstract
Pneumonia is a common cause of hospitalization and is associated with high morbidity in children. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) are primary mediators of inflammation, and have been implicated in a large number of infectious and non-infectious inflammatory diseases. The serum concentrations of TNF-alpha and IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 27 patients with bacterial pneumonia (n = 12) or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia (n = 15) and in 15 healthy control subjects. TNF-alpha concentrations of patients with bacterial pneumonia in acute stage (16.94 +/- 5.70 ng/L) were significantly higher than those in convalescent stage (5.80 +/- 0.75 ng/L), in patients with RSV pneumonia (5.06 +/- 0.44 ng/L) and in healthy control subjects (5.39 +/- 0.68 ng/L) (p < 0.005). TNF-alpha concentrations of patients with RSV pneumonia were not significantly different from those of the control group. IL-6 concentrations of patients with bacterial pneumonia in acute stage (465.94 +/- 290.30 ng/L) were significantly higher than those in convalescent stage (22.04 +/- 15.08 ng/L), in patients with RSV pneumonia (7.65 +/- 2.58 ng/L), and in healthy control subjects (0.84 +/- 0.08 ng/L) (p < 0.0005). There was significant difference between patients with RSV pneumonia and the healthy control group (p < 0.005). In summary, there were significant differences in TNF-alpha and IL-6 concentrations between acute stage and convalescent stage in patients with bacterial pneumonia, making them useful as markers for bacterial pneumonia. Further studies are needed to establish the potential diagnostic and prognostic value of TNF-alpha and IL-6.

Abstract
Objective. To provide related parameters for astronauts. Method. A study of susceptibility to decompression sickness was carried out in 43 subjects in a hypobaric chamber. Result. Incidence of altitude decompression sickness under rest condition was closely related to age, time of oxygen prebreathing, gas bubble formation rates in the venous blood flow returned to heart and some other physiological indexes. Incidence of decompression sickness was significantly higher in subjects aged 30-36 years than in those aged 19-20 years under the same experimental conditions. In the older subjects body-fat, blood cholesterole and noradrenaline in urine during experiment were significantly higher than those in the younger subjects. It also showed that among persons of the same ages, when prebreathing time was longer, the incidence of decompression sickness was significantly lower under the same experimental conditions. Conclusion. It is desirable that the susceptibility to decompression in astronaut be tested with 1 h oxygen prebreathing before exposure to the altitude of 10000 m for 30 min.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To try to find a new method for countermeasuring the effect of simulated weightlessness. METHODS The study was carried out in fifteen male healthy subjects, 19-22 years, -6 degrees head-down bed rest (-6 degrees HDBR) for 21 d was used as a weightlessness simulation model. The subjects were divided into three groups: control group (-6 degrees HDBR), hypoxia group (-6 degrees HDBR + inhalation of hypoxic gas mixture two times a day, 20 min each time) and Qigong group (-6 degrees HDBR + Qigong, three times per day, 45 min each time). Orthostatic test (+75 degrees 20 min) was conducted on each subject pre- and post-HDBR. RESULTS Cardiac rhythm during the orthostatic test was normal pre-HDBR but sinus cardiac arrhythmias were observed in two subjects of the control group and nodal cardiac arrhythmias were observed in two subjects in Qigong group after HDBR. No cardiac arrhythmia was found in hypoxia group. CONCLUSION Hypoxia is more effective in countermeasuring orthostatic intolerance after weightlessness than Qigong.

Abstract
Cabin emergent depressurization (CED) may occur in spacecraft during manned space flight. The purpose of this paper was to study the combined effects of simulated weightlessness (SW) and CED factors on humans and animals. It was found that the amplitude of T wave of human electrocardiograms (ECG) significantly decreased in bed rest and hypoxia compared with the control condition (P<0.05), and that suspension with pure O2 induced severer edema in the lungs of rats than that in only a pure O2 environment. SW and pure O2 caused middle ear congestion and decreased the barofunction during pressure changes. These results indicate that human response to CED factors become more serious under SW because of the blood redistribution.

Abstract
The eclosion of the adult Manduca sexta moth is followed by a wave of cell death that eliminates up to 50% of the neurons of the central nervous system within the first few days of imaginal life. While the identity of some of the dying motoneurons has been established, that of most doomed neurons is unknown. Here, we show that the dying cells include peptidergic neurons involved in the control of ecdysis behavior. These cells belong to a small population of 50 neurons that express crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP), a potent regulator of the ecdysis motor program, and show increases in cyclic 3',5'-guanosine monophosphate at each ecdysis. First, we describe new markers for these neurons and show that they are expressed in these CCAP-immunoreactive neurons in a complex temporal pattern during development. We then show that these neurons die within 36 h after adult eclosion, the last performance of ecdysis behavior in the life of the animal, via the active, genetically determined process of programmed cell death. The death of these neurons supports the hypothesis that outmoded or unused neurons are actively eliminated.

Abstract
Salmonella infection is an important problem in immunocompromised patients. The synovium is a particular metastatic focus of Salmonella infection and can result in many disabilities of life. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients were highly susceptible to Salmonella infection. In the past 6 years, 41 patients with Salmonella septic arthritis have been treated in our hospital. Eleven patients had an underlying systemic disease of SLE which presented with a distinctive clinical course. Alcoholic liver disease (six cases) was another common underlying systemic disease. The most frequent predisposing articular factor was avascular necrosis (16 cases). The hip joint was the most commonly involved site. Salmonella group B was the most common serotype (30/41). Seventy-three per cent (8/11) of the SLE group had involvement of two or more joints compared with only three out of 30 patients in the non-SLE group. The sex differentiation shows a predominance of young females (10/11) in the SLE group and middle-aged males in the non-SLE group. Moreover, in the SLE group, all 11 patients shared the risk of lupus nephritis and steroid use. Ten patients had Salmonella group B bacteraemia and five had urinary tract infections simultaneously. In the non-SLE group, there were 10 patients with a history of steroid use, three with antecedent enteritis, 12 with bacteraemia, and three with necrotising fasciitis. Seven patients in each of the groups had a recurrent course. However, three patients in the non-SLE group had died during the episode of septic arthritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hibernoma is a rare type of benign tumor that originates in brown fat. It has been rarely described in dermatologic literature. OBJECTIVE To report and discuss the clinical and histologic features of a patient with hibernoma and review the relevant literature. PATIENT A large palpable hibernoma located in the interscapular area of a 41-year-old female was identified by physical examination. The tumor was a brown soft mass measuring 7.0 x 6.0 x 3.0 cm that involved subcutaneous tissue and was embedded in the trapzius muscle. It was a well encapsulated and highly vascular tumor. Histologic examination revealed characteristic multivacuolated oval and polygonal cells with eosinophilic, granular cytoplasm. CONCLUSION A hibernoma can be diagnosed on the basis of gross physical characteristics and microscopic findings. This is a benign tumor with no malignant potential. Excisional biopsy is indicated to differentiate hibernoma from well-differentiated liposarcoma. Complete excision is the treatment of choice.

Abstract
Tracheal agenesis (TA) is a rare congenital anomaly that is incompatible with prolonged life. It may occur alone or with other associated anomalies. A term infant presented with cyanosis, hypotonia, absence of crying and respiratory distress at birth. Intubation was difficult. Esophageal intubation was performed under laryngoscopy. As TA was suspected, a bronchoscopy was performed and the infant was found to have a normal epiglottis and vocal cords; however, there was no trachea. Cardiorespiratory deterioration developed and the patient died on the night of the second day at the postnatal age of 41 hours. Tracheal agenesis was confirmed at autopsy. Associated anomalies included bronchoesophageal fistula, double outlet of the right ventricle with ventricular septal defect, bicuspid pulmonary valve, single lobe of the right lung, imperforate anus and a rectourethral fistula. According to development theory, tracheal agenesis and VACTERL (vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiovascular defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, radial dysplasia or renal defects and limb defects association may result from a mesodermal deficiency caused by abnormal blastogenesis.

Abstract
A two-polarization Michelson interferometer with a low-retardance beam splitter and digital signal processing is used to measure the retardance of optical devices. Error analysis of the improved optical system and data processing shows that the measurement has an uncertainty of 0.039 degrees for measurements of nominally 90 degrees retarders. Retardance variations arising from coherent reflections in the retarder used for intercomparison add an uncertainty of from 0.005 degrees to 0.03 degrees , increasing the combined measurement uncertainty to as much as 0.049 degrees .

Abstract
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a nominally quarter-wave linear retarder for wavelengths near 1.3 mum that is stable within +/-0.1 degrees retardance over a range of wavelength, input angle, temperature, and environmental variations. The device consists of two concatenated Fresnel rhombs made from a low stress-optic-coefficient glass that minimizes the residual birefringence from machining and packaging. Device machining, assembly, and antireflection coating tolerances are discussed, and the theoretical performance is compared with measurements. Humidity can modify retardance of the total-internal-reflection surfaces; we discuss packaging that mitigates this effect and provides an estimated 10-year lifetime for the device. Several measurement methods were intercompared to ensure that the device retardance can be measured with an uncertainty less than 0.1 degrees . Similar retarders will be certified by NIST and made available as Standard Reference Materials.

Abstract
We demonstrate an automated polarimeter based on a rotating polarizer for the measurement of linear retardance independent of laser power and detector gain. The retardance is found when a curve is fitted to a unique normalization of the intensity response of the polarimeter over a range of input polarizer orientations. The performance of this polarimeter is optimal for measurements of quarter-wave retardance and minimal for half-wave retardance. Uncertainties are demonstrated by measurements on six stable double Fresnel rhombs of nominal quarter-wave retardance, yielding expanded uncertainties between 0.031 degrees and 0.067 degrees . The accuracy has also been verified by blind comparisons with interferometric and modified null retardance measurement techniques.
