Abstract
Broiler chicks aged 12 h after hatching were allotted according to a block design in a 7 x 2 factorial schedule of 14 treatments and four replications of 50 chicks each one. The main experimental factors were fasting for 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 h after chick placement and sex. Independent of sex, fasting had a negative linear effect on weight and productivity of broilers at market age (42 d) without affecting feed conversion or mortality index. Groups subjected to 18 and 36 h of fasting after placement, corresponding to 30 and 48 h posthatching fasting, had lower biometrical values for small intestine (length, weight, and size; villus height; and crypt depth) than chicks fed immediately after placement. According to the Pearson test, BW of birds at 21 and 42 d were significantly correlated to BW at 7 d (r=0.77) and 21 d (r=0.45), respectively. Males performed better than females but had higher mortality rates. Fasting did not influence serum concentrations of corticosterone or sexual steroid hormones. Nevertheless, early signs of sexual dimorphism arose from the high estradiol (E2) concentration on female serum. Heterophil:lymphocyte ratio was not different among treatments, indicating that early fasting did not seem to be a stress factor 21 or 42 d after fasting. The results suggested a maximum fasting of 24 h after hatching in order to preserve broiler productivity at market age.

Abstract
1. Male broilers of two different genetic stocks, a pure broiler sire line (A) and commercially available Ross broilers (B), were used to study the effect of haematological characteristics in juvenile chickens on the development of clinical ascitic signs. Production performance (body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR)) from 448 birds per stock was measured from 2 to 5 weeks of age. Mortality was recorded from 2 to 6 weeks of age. The birds were housed at a low ambient temperature to stimulate the incidence of ascites. 2. From each stock, 32 birds with the highest (high risk: HRc) and 32 birds with the lowest (low risk: LRc) carbon dioxide tensions (pCO2) in venous blood were selected at 11 d of age. These birds were marked for future blood sampling to determine changes in pCO2 with age to relate these values to ascites susceptibility. 3. At 2 weeks of age all birds (including HRc and LRc birds) were allotted to 32 floor pens (one HRc and one LRc in each pen) per stock. Venous blood samples were collected weekly from HRc and LRc birds for blood gas analysis and haematocrit, and at week 5 also for thyroid hormone (T3, T4) concentrations in plasma. At 5 weeks of age all HRc and LRc birds were examined post-mortem, relative heart, lung, and liver weights and arterial pressure index (API) values were recorded. 4. Birds from stock A showed a lower BWG and FCR and notably higher ascites mortality compared with stock B. An effect of pCO2 tensions at d 11 was found on the incidence of ascitic signs in selected birds of both stocks up to week 5. From the HRc groups 30% of the birds showed ascitic signs, whereas this was only 8% in the LRc group. LRc birds of stock B in particular showed constant low API values (20 +/- 3%) and none of these birds showed signs of ascites. 5. Our results suggest that the ascites problem in Ross birds can be eliminated by selection for low pCO2 tensions in venous blood. Stock effects on API, liver weight, lung weight, and plasma thyroid hormone independent of pCO2 showed a more complex picture of the ascitic signs in stock A compared with B. 6. We concluded that in this experiment a high pCO2 tension in venous blood measured at d 11 was a reliable predictor for ascites susceptibility observed at 5 weeks of age. A low pCO2 tension provides an appropriate criterion for genetic selection, whereas a high pCO2 tension emphasises the necessity for intensive management in poultry houses.

Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FRC) were measured from 2 to 5 weeks of age. Mortality was recorded from 2 to 6 weeks. The birds were kept at a low ambient temperature to stimulate the incidence of ascites. 2. From each stock 32 birds with the highest (High Ht) and 32 birds with the lowest (Low Ht) haematocrit values in venous blood were selected at 12 d of age for an examination on susceptibility for the ascites syndrome at 5 weeks. 3. At 2 weeks 448 birds per stock (including High Ht and Low Ht birds) were allotted to 32 floor pens (1 High Ht and 1 Low Ht in each pen). Venous blood samples were taken weekly in High Ht and Low Ht birds for haematocrit measurements and at week 5 also thyroid hormone (T3, T4) concentrations in plasma were measured. At 5 weeks all High Ht and Low Ht birds were examined post-mortem and arterial pressure index, heart weight, lung weight and liver weight (all relative to body weight) were recorded. High values for arterial pressure index, relative heart and liver weights and low values for relative lung weights and plasma thyroid hormone were considered to be indicators for ascites susceptibility. 4. Stock A, with the highest ascites mortality, had lower values for BWG and FCR than stock B. Throughout, a clear difference in Ht values between High Ht and Low Ht birds was maintained. No significant effects of 12-d haematocrit values were found on the incidence of ascitic symptoms until week 5. High Ht values tended to correlate with low relative lung weights and low plasma T3 concentrations in High Ht birds. 5. Within the groups of selected birds, there was an effect of stock on ascitic symptoms (arterial pressure index, relative heart weight and T3 values) at week 5. This is consistent with a higher ascites mortality in flock A than in flock B, over the whole period up to 6 weeks. Until 4 weeks both A and B were similar with respect to mean Ht values of High Ht and Low Ht groups. After 4 weeks Ht values were very high in the High Ht birds of stock A, possibly as a result of the susceptibility for ascites of stock A. There was a significant interaction between stock and Ht values on the ascites-related variable arterial pressure index. Only in stock A was high arterial pressure at 5 weeks related to high Ht values at d 12. 6. Overall it was concluded that a high Ht in blood of juvenile chickens has limited practical value in predicting incidence of ascites at 5 weeks of age.

Abstract
Somatotrophic and thyroid hormones were determined around the onset of reproduction in broiler breeders reared in two different housing systems [dark, close-sided house (CH) and conventional, open-sided house (OH)]. In both groups age-related changes were obvious for thyroxine (T4), growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1); levels of T4 decreased, especially between 24 and 28 weeks in both groups; concomitantly GH sharply increased over the same period. A transient peak in triiodothyronine (T3) occurred between 25 and 27 weeks. The effect of housing was only present after the onset of lay. Between weeks 27-28 and the end of the period studied, the CH group showed higher levels of GH and T3 but lower T4 levels as compared to the OH group. A significant increase in GH after onset of lay, without any significant rise in T3 or in IGF-I, could point to a relative insensitivity to high plasma GH levels. Changes at GH receptor level, together with an increased pituitary GH secretion and/or decreased GH turnover may be expected. This may indicate that hypothalamo-pituitary changes at the onset of lay not only imply changes of gonadotrophic cell function, but also other hormonal axes. The relatively decrease in T4 without changes in T3, may point to a decrease in the activity of the thyrotropic axis.

Abstract
1. Male chickens of 7 genetic lines, consisting of two pure sire and two pure dam populations, a commercial broiler cross and two slow-growing chicken lines (Label Rouge, LR and Mechelse Koekoek, MK) were reared from 1 to 37 d of age. The chickens received a two-phase dietary regime and were subjected to low ambient temperature. 2. The experimental aim was to investigate relationships between susceptibility to ascites and heat production. 3. Body weight gain (BWG), food intake and food conversion ratio (FCR) were determined. Ascites mortality, arterial pressure index (API=right ventricular/total ventricular weight ratio), haematocrit values, proportional lung weight (lung weight/body weight x 100), plasma thyroid hormones (thyroxine, T4 and triiodothyronine, T3) and arterial blood gas pressures (pCO2 and pO2) were determined. The heat production per kg metabolic body weight (H/W0.75) and total heat production (H) were calculated for the period 16 to 33 d using an energy balance study according to the comparative slaughter method. 4. The two breeder sire lines had high BWG and low FCR and high but different incidences of ascites compared with the slow-growing ascites resistant LR and MK lines with notable high FCR. The broiler cross and slower-growing breeder dam lines had a similar and relatively lower incidence of ascites mortality. 5. The fast-growing chickens had low H/W0.75 values compared with slow-growing lines. 6. These fast-growing breeder sires had lower plasma thyroid hormone, reduced proportional lung weights, low arterial pO2 and high arterial pCO2 pressures compared with the slower-growing lines. 7. In conclusion, ascites incidence was associated with lower heat production per metabolic body weight and therefore a lower oxygen requirement per metabolic weight.

Abstract
A total of 1,800 incubating eggs produced by a commercial flock of Cobb broiler breeders was used to determine the effects of storage duration (3 or 18 d) on spread of hatch and chick quality. Chick relative growth (RG) at the end of 7 d of rearing was also determined as a measure of the chick performance. Chick quality was defined to encompass several qualitative characteristics and scored according to their importance. Eggs stored for 3 d hatched earlier than those stored for 18 d (P < 0.05). Hatching was normally distributed in both categories of eggs, and the spread of hatch was not affected by storage time (P = 0.69). Storage duration of 18 d reduced the percentage of day-old chick with high quality as well as average chick quality score (P < 0.05). RG varied with length of egg storage, quality of day-old chick, and the incubation duration (P < 0.05). Eighteen-day storage of eggs not only resulted in longer incubation duration and lower quality score but also depressed RG. Chick quality as defined in this study was correlated to RG and storage time. It was concluded that day-old chick quality may be a relatively good indicator of broiler performance. The results suggest however that in order to improve performance prediction power of chick quality, it would be better to define it as a combination of several qualitative aspects of the day-old chick and the juvenile growth to 7 d.

Abstract
Incubating eggs (1,800 total) produced by a commercial flock of Cobb broiler breeders were used to determine the effects of storage duration (3 and 18 d) on gas partial pressure, thyroid hormones, and hatching parameters. Partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) and carbon dioxide (pCO2) were measured on d 18 and at internal pipping (IP) during incubation. Blood samples were collected for determination of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and corticosterone concentrations in the embryos at IP and in newly hatched chicks. From 464 to 510 h of incubation, eggs were checked individually every 2 h to determine the timing and duration of IP, external pipping (EP), and total hatching time. At 18 d of incubation and at IP, pCO2 was greater in air cell of eggs stored for 3 d compared to those stored for 18 d (P < 0.05), but pO2 was greater in eggs stored for 18 d. At IP, T3 and corticosterone levels were higher in plasma of the embryos of eggs stored for 3 d compared to those stored for 18 d, but it was the reverse in newly hatched chicks (P < 0.05). Embryos from eggs stored for 18 d required more time to complete IP compared to embryos of eggs stored for only 3 d (P < 0.05), whereas the duration of EP was not affected by storage. The overall longer incubation was, however, not only due to prolonged IP but also to later occurrence of IP. It was concluded that prolonged IP as a result of long storage may be related to the late increase in corticosterone level, which may be a necessary stimulus for higher T3/T4 ratio, late increase in pCO2 level, and decrease in pO2. The effect of long storage was a delay in hatching and a continuous increase in T3 due to higher corticosterone levels between IP and hatching, which may be an indication of the more stressful event of hatching of embryos from eggs stored longer. Differences in pCO2, pO2, T3, T4, and corticosterone levels in the incubating eggs may be manifestations of these changes culminating in altered hatching parameters and consequently differences in chick quality and growth potentials.

Abstract
A quantitative competitive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay (QC RT-PCR) for quantifying the absolute levels of the expression of inhibin alpha- and beta(A)-subunits in chicken granulosa cells showed that these subunits are expressed in different amounts depending on follicular maturation. The present study determined the regulation of the expression of these subunits. The individual effect of different doses of IGF-I, LH or FSH (1-100 ng/ml) or the combination of IGF-I with either LH or FSH at different concentrations, on the expression of inhibin alpha- and beta(A)-subunit was determined on cultured granulosa cells of F(1) and the combined F(4)+F(5) follicle. Cells were cultured for 48 h in 6-well plates with or without added hormones. Culture medium was discarded, cells were washed and total RNA was extracted from the cells. Five hundred nanograms of total RNA was reverse transcribed using specific primers and coamplified with an internal standard, as described previously, to determine expression level in the cells. IGF-I, LH, and FSH enhanced the inhibin alpha-subunit mRNA levels in a dose dependent manner in both F(1) and the combined F(4)+F(5) whereas inhibin beta(A)-subunit was not affected. The effects of FSH, LH were more expressed in F(1) follicles compared to F(4)+F(5) on the alpha-subunit. The addition of IGF-I and either LH or FSH during the culture period significantly increased the stimulatory effects of both LH and FSH on the expression of inhibin alpha-subunit in F(1) follicles but had no significant effect on the inhibin beta(A)-subunit. The results suggest that the changing expression levels of inhibin alpha-subunit during follicular development are the result of the regulatory effect of the interaction between IGF-I and the gonadotropins and that the regulation of this subunit may be the main factor for the regulation of the protein inhibin levels. Other factors may be also implicated in the changing expression levels of the beta(A)-subunit.

Abstract
Four-day-old chick embryos were hormonally treated with 19-nortestosterone in order to inhibit bursa development. At days 1, 4, 8, 15, 22, 29, and 36 of age, plasma, adrenals, and gonads from intact and hormonal treated chicks were collected. In embryonic nortestosterone treated males the appearance of a left 'ovotestis-like' gonad was observed. The occurrence of this ovotestis-like left gonad in the 19-nortestosterone treated male is probably a secondary effect of the in ovo treatment since surgically bursectomised chicks did not show the testicular morphology and histological changes as observed in 19-nortestosterone treated chicks. Additionally, both male and female hormonally or surgically treated chicks showed relatively enlarged adrenal glands. Hormonal bursectomy affected organ inhibin contents and plasma inhibin, testosterone, and FSH levels in males. Male hormonal treated chicks showed lower levels of plasma inhibin (p=0.0001), testosterone (p=0.01), and FSH (p=0.004), and a lower total testes inhibin content (p=0.0003) compared to intact chicks. However, none of these were significantly different between female intact and hormonal treated chicks, again indicating that the observed hormonal changes in males are not the result of the disappearance of the bursa but of the hormonal 19-NT treatment. The total adrenal inhibin content as well as the adrenal inhibin concentration were significantly higher in hormonally treated chicks than in intact chicks (p=0.0001), regardless of the sex.

Abstract
Jojoba seed meal shows appetite-suppressing activity due to the presence of simmondsin. This pharmacological activity disappears with treatment of the meal with sodium hydroxide. To elucidate this mechanism of inactivation, the reaction of simmondsin in 1 N NaOH at 20 degrees C was monitored as a function of time. The end products of the reaction as well as intermediates were isolated and identified. The half-life of simmondsin was approximately 60 min with d-glucose and 2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile as reaction end products. The reaction mechanism could be elucidated by the isolation of isosimmondsin and a simmondsin lactone derivative. Those compounds were isolated and purified by a combination of column chromatography and HPLC and identified mainly by HRMS and NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Male broiler chickens (aged 21 d) were allowed to chose freely for 14 d between three diets in which only one specific macronutrient (protein, lipid, or carbohydrate) was isocalorically substituted for one other macronutrient, but otherwise (nearly) isocaloric and composed of the same ingredients. The three diets were low protein (LowCP; 15.81% CP; 6.56% lipid; 50.78% carbohydrate), low lipid (LowL; 19.63% CP; 3.01% lipid; 51.12% carbohydrate), and low carbohydrate (LowCHO; 19.50% CP; 7.72% lipid; 44.00% carbohydrate). The chickens either received 0, 30, or 45 mg of corticosterone (CORT) per kg diet. As a percentage of their total intake, unsupplemented chickens consumed 24.0, 71.4, and 4.6% of the LowCP, LowL, and LowCHO diets, respectively, giving a total CP, L, and CHO intake of 282, 61, and 765 g, respectively. The addition of CORT significantly changed the diet selection, as compared to the unsupplemented chickens, CORT chickens consumed a greater percentage from the LowCP (35%), less from the LowL (55%), and again more from the Low-CHO (10%) diet. On the other hand, total feed consumption, macronutrient, and ME intake were not altered significantly by CORT supplementation, probably because of the close similarity of the diets. Corticosterone-supplemented chickens manifested hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and uric acidemia suggesting insulin resistance, increased lipogenesis and protein catabolism, respectively. The elevated plasma creatine kinase (CK) activities of CORT chickens are also suggestive for decreased muscle cell membrane stability. Furthermore, CORT chickens were characterized by increased proportional weights of liver, abdominal fat pad, proventriculus, and gizzard, whereas an involution of spleen and bursa was observed. In conclusion, the present results suggest that high circulating levels of CORT as in the case of stress results in metabolic alterations, which in turn, affects diet preference as a compensatory mechanism to adapt energy and nutrient metabolism.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore whether time-variant parameter estimation procedures allow modeling and predicting the dynamic growth response of broiler chickens to feed intake in real time. A recursive linear model was used that estimated the model parameters every 24 h based on a fixed number of actual and past measurements (i.e., time window). Based on 48 datasets, it was concluded that the mean relative prediction error (MRPE) of the recursive linear modeling approach had a minimum for a window size of 5 d. Weight of the birds could be predicted during the growth process 3 to 7 d ahead with a mean relative prediction error of 5% or less. In comparison with the prediction results of three static empirical growth models (one linear and two nonlinear models), the recursive modeling technique had a similar accuracy to the nonlinear empirical models (MRPE of 1.4% to 2.3% vs. 1.1% to 2.8%), but it was less accurate for larger prediction horizons (2 to 7 d). The compact recursive linear model was more accurate than the static linear growth model for prediction horizons of one up to 4 d, depending on the feeding strategy. Since such recursive modeling approach allows the prediction of broiler growth without any prior knowledge of the system and takes into account the time-variant (nonlinear) nature of the growth process based on only a small window of measured information, it is suitable for real-time integration in process management.

Abstract
The histological distribution of gonadotrophs containing either LH or FSH, but not both gonadotropins, has been demonstrated before in the juvenile and adult chicken throughout the caudal and cephalic anterior pituitary lobes. In the present investigation, the distribution of FSH- and/or LH-containing gonadotrophs was further investigated in the chicken embryo by use of the same homologous antibodies as used in our earlier study. Fluorescent dual-labeling immunohistochemistry revealed that during embryogenesis LH and FSH reside exclusively in separate gonadotrophs, as has been described before in the post hatch bird. LH-immunoreactive cells were observed for the first time at day 9 of embryogenesis. This is as much as 4 days earlier than the FSH-immunoreactive cells, which appeared at day 13 of embryogenesis. Our results confirm that FSH- and LH-containing gonadotrophs are distributed throughout both lobes of the anterior pituitary. No conspicuous differences were observed between the sexes in any of the aspects investigated. The described situation is unique in that it seems to imply the existence of separate cell lineages for FSH- and LH-producing cells, as opposed to the single gonadotrope lineage described in all other species studied so far, with the exception of bovine. Our data indeed raise the question as to which signaling and/or transcription factors may cause the unique dichotomy observed in the chicken gonadotrophs.

Abstract
1. Eggshell quality was compared in 6 different strains of laying hens. Three strains were commercial; the three others were experimental. 2. Four different variables describing the strength of eggshells were investigated. Three of them were the classical ones eggshell thickness, shell stiffness measured during quasi-static compression and breaking force. Dynamic stiffness, introduced by Coucke (Ph.D. Thesis, KU Leuven, 1998), was the 4th. The fact that this measurement is dynamic could be helpful in genetic selection for eggshell breakage, because forces applied to the egg in practice are dynamic, rather than static. 3. Hisex White hens produce eggs with the strongest eggshell, in terms of all 4 eggshell variables. However, their shell quality in terms of breaking force did not remain constant over the laying period, unlike 4 other strains. 4. All strains showed a decline in quasi-static stiffness over time. 5. The eggshell thickness of three strains showed a decline over time. 6. Dynamic stiffness remained constant or improved in all strain. 7. All variables describing the mechanical eggshell strength gave different information.

Abstract
The present study was carried out to determine, first, the cardiac beta-adrenergic receptor characteristics of broiler chick embryos exposed to two different CO(2) levels during the last stage of embryonic development, and second, the prophylactic effect of beta(1)-adrenoceptor blocker on right ventricular hypertrophy in broiler chickens. High CO(2) embryos showed significantly higher haematocrit values, higher partial pressure of CO(2) levels and lower partial pressure of O(2) levels than those of normal CO(2) embryos. Exposure of chick embryos to high CO(2) levels reduced the binding capacity of myocardial beta-adrenergic receptors compared with those embryos incubated at the normal CO(2) level. Atenolol-supplemented diet numerically reduced ascites incidence in broiler chickens (7%) compared with birds fed the control diet (15%). In conclusion, these data support the important role of the beta-adrenergic receptor in the cardiovascular system for cardiac output, and secondary to pulmonary hypertension syndrome.

Abstract
Commercial Cobb broiler breeders were subjected to molting from 55 to 62 wk of age. Incubating eggs were collected before molting and after molting and were stored for 18, 13, 8, or 3 d. Sample eggs were broken to measure albumen Haugh units (HU) and pH. Two hundred twenty-five eggs per treatment, stored for 18, 13, 8, or 3 d, were incubated for 21 d; the hatched chicks were weighed at the end of incubation and again after Day 7 of rearing. As the storage time increased, albumen HU decreased (P < 0.001). At all storage times, HU after molting were higher than those before molting (P < 0.001). Albumen pH increased with storage time (P < 0.001). A molting x storage interaction on pH was observed after 8 d of storage (P = 0.03). Hatchability of eggs increased after hens were molted, if the eggs were stored for a long time (P < 0.001). Body weights of 1-d-old chicks from the eggs of hens before molt were heavier than those from eggs after molting (P < 0.001). Conversely, at 7 d, the chicks from the eggs after molting were significantly heavier than those from eggs before molting (P < 0.001). We concluded that molting was a procedure to improve hatchability and chick juvenile growth. If eggs need to be stored, we recommended that fresh eggs with high HU value be stored rather than those with low HU values.

Abstract
The thyrotropic and somatotropic effects of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) in precocial Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and altricial European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) during postnatal ontogeny were studied. Concentrations of thyroid hormones (TH) and growth hormone (GH) in the circulation were determined 60 min after the subcutaneous administration of TRH. In quail, TRH caused an increase of triiodothyronine (T(3)) in plasma during the phase of rapid growth, whereas thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were not affected. In starlings, with a different developmental pattern of TH concentrations, TRH induced an increase of plasma T(3) concentrations on all analyzed days, whereas a significant increase of T(4) occurred on day 1 only. Concentrations of GH were stimulated by TRH in both species. Although growth rate is nearly two times higher in starlings than in quail, differences in the control of the thyrotropic and somatotropic axes do not parallel this difference and tissue sensitivity to other hormonal signals are expected in both developmental strategies.

Abstract
1. A total of 39,000 eggs (260 incubation batches) produced by Hybro, Cobb and Ross were studied. They were transferred from incubators to hatchers at day 15,16,17 or 18 of incubation. 2. Hatchability increased in proportion to the day of transfer and it was higher when the transfer occurred at day 18, whereas the differences between hatchability for days 15, 16 and 17 were not significant. 3. The hatchability of the Hybro eggs was more affected by the transfer time, as were the eggs of the older flock (51 weeks and more). 4. The percentage of unhatched embryos increased with the age of the breeders and decreased with the day of transfer. In addition, the percentage of unhatched embryos was affected by the strain of hen. 5. It was concluded that transfer time has to be considered in order to optimise hatchability and chick quality, especially if the eggs from older flocks are incubated.

Abstract
The isolation and identification of two pinitol alpha-D-galactosides from jojoba meal are described. The products were isolated by a combination of preparative HPLC on silica gel and TLC on amino silica gel and were identified by MS, NMR spectroscopy, and chemical derivatization as 5-O-(alpha-D-galactopyranosyl)-3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol or 5-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-D-pinitol and 2-O-(alpha-D-galactopyranosyl)-3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol or 2-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-D-pinitol. The same preparative HPLC method on silica gel allowed a new simmondsin derivative to be isolated and identified as 4,5-didemethyl-4-O-alpha-D-glucopyranosylsimmondsin mainly by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The expression of inhibin alpha- and beta(A)-subunits was investigated in gonads of male and female chick embryos during the last week of their 21-day incubation period. Fertilized Hisex brown laying hen eggs were incubated at 37.8 +/- 0.2 degrees and 60% relative humidity in an automatic forced-draft incubator with constant lighting. Embryos were killed after 14, 18, and 21 days of incubation, sexed by macroscopical inspection of the gonadal phenotype, and further dissected to obtain the gonads. Total RNA was isolated using the ultraspec RNA method. The expression of alpha- and beta(A)-subunits was evaluated by competitive RT-PCR. Significant differences were found within and between sexes in the expression of the alpha- and beta(A)-subunits. The level of the alpha-subunit in the testis was about 23-fold higher than that in the ovary at all ages. Testicular content of inhibin alpha mRNA levels was similar at days 14 and 18 but declined significantly at day 21 of incubation, whereas no significant differences were observed between the three age groups in the ovary. Testicular and ovarian inhibin beta(A)-subunit increased significantly from day 14 to day 18 followed by a significant decline before hatch. However, inhibin beta(A) level at day 14 was significantly higher in the ovary than in the testis. At days 18 and 21, there were no differences in the levels of the inhibin beta(A) in the sexes. The expression of inhibin beta(A)-subunit in the ovary was significantly higher than that of the alpha-subunit at all ages. In the testis, however, the expression of the beta(A)-subunit was higher at days 18 and 21 than at day 14. The sex difference in gonadal inhibin subunits expression suggests differential roles of inhibin/activin in the development of the chicken gonads. The changing level of expression during incubation also suggests changing biological roles within sexes.

Abstract
The very sensitive competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to investigate the expression of the extracellular (GHRe) and intracellular (GHRi) parts of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) in the liver tissue of chickens. Two competitors (internal standards), pGHRi MUT and pGHRe MUT, specific to the GHRi and GHRe genes, respectively, were constructed by site-specific mutagenesis. The internal standards defined PCR products of 394 bp for the pGHRi MUT and 330 bp for the GHRe MUT. These were used as competitors to the wild-type GHRi or GHRe which defined PCR products of 382 and 328 bp, respectively. Coamplification, under standardized conditions, of the native RNA in competition with serial dilutions of the mutant RNA in the same PCR reaction followed by enzymatic digestion produced the expected sizes of internal standard cDNA and predicted target cDNA. Expression levels of GHRe and GHRi were determined from standard curves generated. The method was sensitive enough to detect expressions down to picogram levels. Applying this method, the effect of GH and T(3) injection on GHRe and GHRi mRNA expression was determined in the liver of adult female Hisex birds and 1-day-old normal and dwarf chickens. Intravenous GH injection (25 microg/kg body weight) increased plasma levels of GH in Hisex birds after 10 min but rapidly decreased at 60 min followed by an increase in T(3). GH injection significantly increased the expression of the GHRe 60 min after injection but not at 10 min, when the GH level in plasma was high. In the liver of saline-treated dwarf (dw) and nondwarf (Dw) chicks, the level of expression of GHRe was similar in both strains despite disparate levels of basal GH and T(3). However, the level of GHRi was higher in Dw than in dw chicks. Although GH levels increased in both strains after intravenous GH injection (250 microg/kg body wt), the expression of GHRe in both strains was unaffected. However, the mRNA for the GHRi was significantly depressed by injection in the Dw but unaffected in dw chicks. Intravenous injection of T(3) (0.5 and 5 microg/kg body wt) increased plasma levels in both strains but caused depression of GHRi in Dw but not in dw chicks. T(3) injections had no effect on GHRe in either Dw or dw chicks. It is concluded that the expression of the GHRe in adult chickens is GH regulated either directly or indirectly. In contrast, in 1-day-old chicks, GH or T(3) had no effects on the GHRe but regulated the expression of GHRi in Dw chicks, whereas in dwarf chicks both had no effect on GHRe or GHRi expression. It is postulated that GHRe and GHRi gene expression may be regulated by different agonists/antagonists in different strains and depending on the age of the chicken.

Abstract
1. The present study examined the effects of the addition of 100 mg/kg L-carnitine to the basal starter (containing 17.8 mg/kg L-carnitine) and finisher (containing 22.9 mg/kg L-carnitine) diets on performance, organ weights and plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations of male and female broiler chickens. The broiler chickens were reared either in a room with a normal temperature (NT) program or with a low temperature (LT) program (rapid decrease from 28 degrees C to 20 degrees C at 14 d of age). 2. Broiler chickens reared under the LT schedule consumed more food and attained a greater body weight at 42 d of age than their counterparts reared under NT schedule, without any difference in food efficiency or abdominal fat content. Dietary L-carnitine supplementation had no significant effects on any of these production parameters, except for a reduction in the abdominal fat content of female NT chickens. However, the LT schedule and dietary L-carnitine supplementation greatly increased absolute and proportional heart weights. The elevated heart weights were not due to right ventricle hypertrophy. 3. Both the LT program and L-carnitine supplementation increased circulating plasma triiodothyronine concentrations. There were also some transient effects of both experimental variables on plasma growth hormone, glucose and triglyceride concentrations. 4. L-carnitine did not improve broiler performance. However, this result does not mean that L-carnitine supplementation cannot have beneficial effects in other circumstances. In view of the elevated proportional heart weights, it can also be argued that L-carnitine is a potential agent for reducing the incidence of metabolic diseases in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Vibration, being a consequence of motion during transport, may impair the welfare of pigs. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate during transport simulation the use of ACTH and cortisol plasma levels, which are part of a basic adaptation mechanism of pigs and 2) to define comfort conditions for pigs related to the frequency and acceleration of vibration. Pigs with a body weight between 20 and 25 kg were vibrated in the vertical direction for 2 h at 2, 4, 8, and 18 Hz, in combination with root mean square acceleration magnitudes of 1 or 3 m/s2. Blood was sampled at regular intervals before, during, and after vibration as the pig's behaviors were recorded. Data on ACTH, cortisol, and behavior could be collected from 104 vibrated pigs and 21 controls. In addition, eight animals (3 controls, 5 vibrated) were treated with 0.1 mg of dexamethasone/kg BW, eight animals (3 controls, 8 vibrated) with 0.1 mg naloxone/kg BW, and six (2 controls, 4 vibrated) with a physiological salt solution. Blood samples were taken and products were administrated via an intravenous catheter. The pigs spent less time lying during both hours of vibration treatment than during control conditions. Compared with 2 and 4 Hz, time spent lying was 10 times shorter at 8 Hz and 18 times shorter at 18 Hz. At 1030, ACTH levels were significantly higher than basal levels in animals vibrated at 2 (P < 0.0001), 4 (P < 0.002), and 18 Hz (P < 0.0006). After 1 h, levels returned to basal values. Cortisol levels increased very rapidly after the beginning of vibration (P < 0.0001) and remained higher until 1 h after cessation of vibration (P < 0.003). An inferrence of the lines of equal responses for ACTH and cortisol indicated that, in the beginning of vibration exposure, pigs were extremely susceptible to vibrations at lower frequencies (2 and 4 Hz), whereas at the end of vibration exposure the responses were higher at 18 Hz. The application of dexamethasone and naloxone underpinned the emotional component of the response strategy of pigs to vibration. Hence, vibration during transport should be minimized in order to enhance the adaptive capacities of pigs.
