Abstract
BACKGROUND The symptoms of major depression (MD) are clinically diverse. Do they form coherent factors that might clarify the underlying nature of this important psychiatric syndrome? METHOD Symptoms at lifetime worst depressive episode were assessed at structured psychiatric interview in 6008 women of Han Chinese descent, age ⩾30 years with recurrent DSM-IV MD. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatoryfactor analysis (CFA) were performed in Mplus in random split-half samples. RESULTS The preliminary EFA results were consistently supported by the findings from CFA. Analyses of the nine DSM-IV MD symptomatic A criteria revealed two factors loading on: (i) general depressive symptoms; and (ii) guilt/suicidal ideation. Examining 14 disaggregated DSM-IV criteria revealed three factors reflecting: (i) weight/appetite disturbance; (ii) general depressive symptoms; and (iii) sleep disturbance. Using all symptoms (n = 27), we identified five factors that reflected: (i) weight/appetite symptoms; (ii) general retarded depressive symptoms; (iii) atypical vegetative symptoms; (iv) suicidality/hopelessness; and (v) symptoms of agitation and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS MD is a clinically complex syndrome with several underlying correlated symptom dimensions. In addition to a general depressive symptom factor, a complete picture must include factors reflecting typical/atypical vegetative symptoms, cognitive symptoms (hopelessness/suicidal ideation), and an agitated symptom factor characterized by anxiety, guilt, helplessness and irritability. Prior cross-cultural studies, factor analyses of MD in Western populations and empirical findings in this sample showing risk factor profiles similar to those seen in Western populations suggest that our results are likely to be broadly representative of the human depressive syndrome.

Abstract
UNLABELLED CONTEXT.: Methoxetamine is a ketamine analogue that has recently emerged as a novel psychoactive substance. Chronic ketamine use is associated with significant bladder and renal toxicity. Methoxetamine has been marketed as "bladder friendly", but there is no data to be able to substantiate this claim. OBJECTIVE To characterise the patterns of bladder and renal toxicity associated with 3 months of methoxetamine administration in an animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two-month-old Institute of Cancer Research mice were administered 30 mg/kg methoxetamine intraperitoneally (n = 5) or saline (n = 3 control) for 3 months. The animals were then sacrificed and histological examination, immuno-cytochemistry using polyclonal anti-CD4 antibodies and sirius-red staining for collagen were performed. RESULTS The kidneys of methoxetamine-treated animals showed inflammatory cell infiltration, tubular cell necrosis and glomerular damage (1.9 ± 0.3% shrunken glomeruli in control, 9.8 ± 0.8% in methoxetamine-treated mice (p < 0.0001); 2.9 ± 0.3% tubular cell degeneration in control, 20.4 ± 1.1% in methoxetamine-treated mice (p < 0.0001)). There was a greater density of mononuclear cells in the bladder lamina propria and submucosa in methoxetamine-treated mice (43.0 ± 2.1 per 250 × 250 μm) than controls (7.1 ± 1.2 per 250 × 250 μm), p < 0.001. CD4-positive staining was seen in the bladder submucosa and lamina propria of all methoxetamine-treated mice and muscle-layer of two methoxetamine-treated mice; these changes were not seen in the control mice. There was an increase in sirius-red collagen in the bladder sub-mucosa and muscle-layer in the methoxetamine-treated mice compared with control mice. DISCUSSION This study has shown that 3 months of daily 30 mg/kg intra-peritoneal methoxetamine results in significant bladder and renal toxicity in mice. Changes in the bladder included inflammatory changes with subsequent fibrosis and changes in the kidney were seen at both a tubular and glomerular level. These changes are similar to those seen in comparable animal models of chronic ketamine administration. Further work is required to determine the time course of the onset of these effects and whether the effects are reversible with methoxetamine cessation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over several decades, many cohort studies from the medical epidemiology literature have observed that compared with abstainers, moderate drinkers experience lower risk for a range of diseases. It was very difficult to separate the hypothesised physiological protective effect of moderate drinking from its well-correlated confounders in observational study settings. AIMS To investigate the association between current alcohol consumption levels of randomly selected family members and the current self-reported health status of other members living within the same family, using a large-scale representative general population survey. METHOD Poisson regression models of the association between randomly selected key respondent alcohol consumption and health status of cohabiting family members using data from the 2008, 2009 and 2010 National Health Interview Surveys. Self-reported alcohol consumption of randomly selected key participants and self-reported health status of adult and child (parent reported) family members living in the same household were measured and compared. RESULTS After controlling for a large range of commonly reported confounders, inverse associations were evident between light and moderate alcohol consumption of key participants and the prevalence of adverse health status among their family members, including children. CONCLUSIONS The superior health status attributed to family members of light and moderate drinkers is highly likely to be spurious and due to residual confounding rather than physiologically protective effects of alcohol. Unaccounted for confounding is likely to underpin apparent 'protective effects' due to moderate drinking commonly reported from observational studies of all-cause mortality, heart disease, stroke and other chronic diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To determine the polymorphism at position 247 of the β2-glycoprotein I (β2GPI) gene in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and healthy controls in the Chinese Han Population and elucidate the relationship between β2GPI polymorphisms and anti-β2GPI levels, and furthermore investigate the correlation between β2GPI polymorphisms and thrombosis in patients with SLE. METHODS The β2GPI polymorphisms of 300 patients with SLE and 300 healthy controls were examined by single-specific-primer polymerase chain reaction (SSP-PCR), the efficacy of which was confirmed by sequencing technology. Anti-β2GPI antibodies were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. β2GPI polymorphisms associated with thrombosis and the presence of anti-β2GPI antibodies were also statistically evaluated with SPSS software. RESULTS The genotype expressions and the allele frequencies were obtained in both patients with SLE and healthy controls. The SLE patients with thrombosis had significantly higher frequencies of the VV genotype and V allele than those without thrombosis and the controls, and there were no differences in VV genotype and V allele expression between the SLE patients without thrombosis and the controls. In contrast, the presence of anti-β2GPI antibody was related to the VV genotype of β2GPI, and the anti-β2GPI-positive patients had obviously higher frequencies of the VV genotype than the negative ones and the controls. CONCLUSION The study results suggested that the V/V genotype and the V-encoding allele at position 247 of the β2GPI gene had strong correlation with the occurrence of thrombosis and the production of the anti-β2GPI antibodies, showing that the Val(247) β2GPI allele may be one of the genetic risk factors for the development of thrombosis in patients with SLE.

Abstract
Growth and carcass traits are economically important quality characteristics of beef cattle and are complex quantitative traits that are controlled by multiple genes. In this study, 2 candidate genes, H-FABP (encoding the heart fatty acid-binding protein) and PSMC1 (encoding the proteasome 26S subunit of ATPase 1) were investigated in Qinchuan beef cattle of China. PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing methods were used to detect mutations in the H-FABP and PSMC1 genes in Qinchuan cattle, and a T>C mutation in exon 1 of H-FABP and a T>C mutation in exon 9 of PSMC1 were identified. The association of these 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms with growth and carcass traits of Qinchuan cattle was analyzed. The T>C mutation in H-FABP was significantly associated with body length and dressing percentage (P < 0.05) and the T>C mutation in PSMC1 with body length and hip width (P < 0.05), indicating that both of the 2 mutations in H-FABP and PSMC1 had effects on growth and carcass traits in the Qinchuan beef cattle breed. Thus, the results of our study suggest that the H-FABP and PSMC1 gene polymorphisms could be used as genetic markers in marker-assisted selection for improving Qinchuan beef cattle.

Abstract
We study stability and spectral purity of a microresonator-based Kerr frequency comb oscillator experimentally and observe a correlation between the frequency of the continuous wave laser pumping the nonlinear resonator and the repetition frequency of the comb. This correlation is used in a proof-of-principle demonstration of a Kerr frequency comb stabilized with an optical transition of 87Rb.

Abstract
Growing evidence shows that the deregulation of the circadian clock plays an important role in the development of malignant tumors, including gliomas. However, the molecular mechanisms of genes controlling circadian rhythm in glioma cells have not been explored. Using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry techniques, we examined the expression of the most important clock genes, clock, in 67 gliomas.Our results revealed that asynchronized expression of the clock gene was found in cancerous tissues in comparison with paired non-cancerous tissues. The expression levels of clock mRNA in grade III or IV glioma was significantly different from the surrounding non-tumor tissues (P < 0.01). The difference in the expression of clock in low-grade (grades 1 and II) gliomas and the surrounding non-glioma tissues was insignificant (P > 0.05). The intensity of immunoactivity for Clock in highgrade gliomas was significantly higher than that of low-grade gliomas (r = -0.403, P 5 0.012 , < 0.05), non-tumor tissues around high-grade gliomas (r = -0.376, P = 0.027 < 0.05), while there was no difference in the intensity of immunoactivity for Clock between low-grade gliomas and the surrounding non-tumor tissues (P > 0.05). The expression of PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) protein in highgrade gliomas was significantly higher than that of low-grade gliomas (P < 0.05). In this study, we found that the expression of clock in glioma cells and in the surrounding non-tumor cells. The expression of clock in highgrade gliomas was significantly higher than that of the low-grade gliomas and non-glioma. Therefore, we suggest that disturbances in clock expression may result in the disruption of the control of normal circadian rhythm, thus benefiting the survival of glioma cells and promoting carcinogenesis.

Abstract
In this research, we will examine the expression of Fibulin-4 in aortic wall to find out its role in aortic dissection development. The samples of aortic wall were obtained from 10 patients operated for acute ascending aortic dissection and five patients for chronic ascending aortic dissection. Another 15 pieces of samples from patients who had coronary artery bypass were as controls. The aortic samples were stained with aldehyde magenta dyeing to evaluate the arrangement of elastic fibers. The Fibulin-4 protein and mRNA expression were both determined by Western blot and realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Compared with the control group, both in acute and chronic ascending aortic dissection, elastic fiber fragments increased and the expression of fibulin-4 protein significantly decreased ( P = 0.045 < 0.05). The level of fibulin-4 mRNA decreased in acute ascending aortic dissection ( P = 0.034 < 0.05), while it increased in chronic ascending aortic dissection ( P = 0.004 < 0.05). The increased amounts of elastic fiber fragments were negatively correlated with the expression of fibulin-4 mRNA in acute ascending aortic dissection. In conclusion, in aortic wall of ascending aortic dissection, the expression of fibulin-4 protein decreased and the expression of fibulin-4 mRNA was abnormal. Fibulin-4 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of aortic dissection.

Abstract
We theoretically and experimentally investigate the chaotic regime of optical frequency combs generated in nonlinear ring microresonators pumped with continuous wave light. We show that the chaotic regime reveals itself by a flat top symmetric envelope of the frequency spectrum, when observed by means of an optical spectrum analyzer. The comb, demodulated on a fast photodiode, produces a noisy radio frequency signal with spectral width significantly exceeding the linear bandwidth of the microresonator mode. We discuss practical ways of excitation of a coherent frequency comb and avoiding the chaotic regime.

Abstract
We show that scattering-based interaction among nearly degenerate optical modes is the key factor in low threshold generation of Kerr frequency combs in nonlinear optical resonators with small group velocity dispersion (GVD). Mode interaction is capable of producing drastic changes in the local GVD, resulting in either a significant reduction, or an increase, in the oscillation threshold. Furthermore, we show that mode interaction is also responsible for majority of observed optical frequency combs in resonators characterized with large normal GVD. We present results of our numerical simulations together with supporting experimental data.

Abstract
UNLABELLED An implementation analysis of the first eighteen months of the Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Program examined the variability among participating local agencies in the extent of screening services delivered; local program implementation processes; and the relationships between extent of screening and the local level processes. The study used: 1) a mail and telephone survey of local health departments (LHD, N = 24) and 2) state program surveillance data, with correlational methods. OUTCOMES MEASURED 1) "Penetration," the proportion of the target population screened; and 2) "Efficiency," the number of women screened per program staff member. Categories of implementation variables were: 1) Environment, 2) Staffing, 3) Collaboration with community organizations, 4) Outreach, 5) Provider variables, 6) Relationships with State and LHDs, 7) Organizational variables, and 8) Service delivery. Results showed wide local variability in screening levels. Availability of local resources; provider involvement; success of community linkages; and local health department readiness showed relationships with the extent of local screening. Studying implementation is needed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of community-based programs.

Abstract
Mammalian dosage compensation requires silencing of one of the two X chromosomes in females and is controlled by the X inactivation center (Xic). Xic contains many of the regulatory elements for the mutual interplay of X-inactive specific transcript (Xist) and Tsix, the antisense counterpart of Xist. The regulatory elements control X chromosome inactivation (XCI) via the formation of DNA-DNA and DNA-protein complexes with cis- and trans-acting factors. However, the process-dependent regulation of Xist/Tsix by these elements in each XCI process remains largely unknown. In this study, a 6-thioguanine-resistant female F(1) hybrid mouse cell line (designated HOBMSKI2) was constructed from a cross between a female HPRT-deficient transgenic mouse (designated BM3) and a male wild type Mus spretus mouse (designated MS), which enabled the direct discrimination of both allele-specific expression of X-linked genes and allele-specific binding of proteins associated with XCI due to DNA polymorphisms between BM3 and MS. Using this cell line, we found that Tsix on the active X chromosome (Xa) was not expressed in somatic cells despite the fact that CTCF, which ensures Tsix expression in embryonic stem cells, was still bound to the 5' end of Tsix on Xa, implying that CTCF may function differently during each XCI process and its trans-activating activity for Tsix expression may be lost in the maintenance process. In addition, the monoallelic expression of Tsix on Xa was inhibited by epigenetic modification of the chromatin in the maintenance process, which was mediated by protein complexes recruited by MeCP2. The results indicate the value of HOBMSKI2 in directly detecting the allele-specific binding of CTCF and MeCP2 to the 5' end of Tsix. The HOBMSKI2 mouse line is a versatile and useful resource for studying the molecular mechanism of the XCI process.

Abstract
More than 2 years after the start of pandemic H1N1, the world is fortunate that the impact, to date, has been moderate. An evaluation of the global response to the first wave of the pandemic is still ongoing. The results of an analysis of the situation in China is presented in order to gain a better understanding of the episode; to summarize the experiences in preparedness, control and mitigation of the pandemic; and to identify issues for further consideration and investigation in order to improve the response to possible next waves of the pandemic. China's response shows how a huge challenge can be transformed into an opportunity, and may offer some valuable lessons to face another wave of the pandemic or other potential public health emergencies in the future, not only for China but also for the international community.

Abstract
Surfactant protein D (SP-D), a member of the C-type lectin (collectin) protein family, plays a critical role in innate host defence against various microbial pathogens and in the modulation of inflammatory responses in the lung. However, little is known about its expression and biological function in the kidney. In this work, we studied SP-D expression in human kidney and cultured human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2), and examined the effect of SP-D on proinflammatory cytokine production after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulus. We observed the expression of both SP-D mRNA and protein in human kidney and in-vitro HK-2 cells by immunohistochemistry, Western blot analysis, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. To explore the potential role of SP-D in the pathogenesis of tubulointerstitial fibrosis in kidney infection, we examined the production of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in HK-2 cells after LPS treatment. Results showed that the level of MCP-1 in the conditioned medium increased significantly when HK-2 cells were cultured with LPS (>0·1 µg/ml) for 8 h. Of interest, LPS treatment inhibited SP-D expression in HK-2 cells. Furthermore, over-expression of SP-D reduced significantly the LPS-induced expression of MCP-1 in transfected cells. These findings suggest that SP-D in the kidney functions as an anti-inflammatory factor in renal tubular epithelial cells and may modulate tubulointerstitial fibrosis in kidney.

Abstract
In avian brood parasitism, egg phenotype plays a key role for both host and parasite reproduction. Several parrotbill species of the genus Paradoxornis are parasitized by the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus, and clear polymorphism in egg phenotype is observed. In this article, we develop a population genetics model in order to identify the key parameters that control the maintenance of egg polymorphism. The model analyses show that egg polymorphism can be maintained either statically as an equilibrium or dynamically with frequency oscillations depending on the sensitivity of the host against unlike eggs and how the parasite targets host nests with specific egg phenotypes. On the basis of the model, we discuss egg polymorphism observed in parrotbills and other host species parasitized by the cuckoo. We suggest the possibility that frequencies of egg phenotypes oscillate and we appeal for monitoring of cuckoo-host interactions over a large spatiotemporal scale.
