Kekulene: On-Surface Synthesis, Orbital Structure, and Aromatic Stabilization

We revisit the question of kekulene's aromaticity by focusing on the electronic structure of its frontier orbitals as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. To this end, we have developed a specially designed precursor, 1,4,7(2,7)-triphenanthrenacyclononaphane-2,5,8-triene, which allows us to prepare sufficient quantities of kekulene of high purity directly on a Cu(111) surface, as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Supported by density functional calculations, we determine the orbital structure of kekulene's highest occupied molecular orbital by photoemission tomography. In agreement with a recent aromaticity assessment of kekulene based solely on C-C bond lengths, we conclude that the π-conjugation of kekulene is better described by the Clar model rather than a superaromatic model. Thus, by exploiting the capabilities of photoemission tomography, we shed light on the question which consequences aromaticity holds for the frontier electronic structure of a π-conjugated molecule.

Conformation and Aromaticity Switching in a Curved Non-Alternant sp2 Carbon Scaffold

A curved sp2 carbon scaffold containing fused pentagon and heptagon units (1) was synthesized by Pd-catalyzed [5+2] annulation from a 3,9-diboraperylene precursor and shows two reversible oxidation processes at low redox potential, accompanied by a butterfly-like motion. Stepwise oxidation produced radical cation 1.+ and dication 12+ . In the crystal structure, 1 exhibits a chiral cisoid conformation and partial π-overlap between the enantiomers. For the radical cation 1.+ , a less curved cisoid conformation is observed with a π-dimer-type arrangement. 12+ adopts a more planar structure with transoid conformation and slip-stacked π-overlap with closest neighbors. We also observed an intermolecular mixed-valence complex of 1⋅(1.+ )3 that has a huge trigonal unit cell [(1)72 (SbF6 )54 ⋅(hexane)101 ] and hexagonal columnar stacks. In addition to the conformational change, the aromaticity of 1 changes from localized to delocalized, as demonstrated by AICD and NICS(1)zz calculations.

A BN-Doped Cycloparaphenylene Debuts

The first example of a BN-doped cycloparaphenylene BN-[10]CPP was synthesized and characterized. Its reactivity and photophysical properties were evaluated in direct comparison to its carbonaceous analogues Mes-[10]CPP and [10]CPP. While the photophysical properties of BN-[10]CPP remains similar to its carbonaceous analogues, the electronic structure changes associated with the introduction of a 1,2-azaborine BN heterocycle into a CPP scaffold enables facile and selective late-stage functionalizations that cannot be accomplished with carbonaceous CPPs. Specifically, Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of BN-[10]CPP selectively reduces the BN heterocyclic ring, which upon hydrolysis produces a rare example of a macrocyclic paraphenylene 6 incorporating the versatile ketone functionality within the macrocyclic ring.

Stability, Aromaticity, and Photophysical Behaviors of Macrocyclic Molecules: A Theoretical Analysis

The macrocyclic molecules with terthiophene (TTH) isomers unit exhibit intriguing properties in terms of aromaticity, stability, and absorption. In this work, we theoretically designed a series of macrocyclic molecules featured with TTH and dithienothiophene (DTT) π-conjugated building units, which are used to permute pyrrole unit in porphyrin skeleton. Density functional theory and time-dependent DFT methods are used to evaluate the performance of the designed molecules. Our simulations show that molecules 1–3 exhibit excellent optoelectronic performance. Specifically, the molecule with the DTT unit is more stable than the one with TTH unit in terms of aromaticity and aromatic stabilization energy. This is because DTT unit enhances the coplanarity of the molecular material, facilitating electronic communication. Calculation of vertical electronic excitations suggests the absorption feature of these molecules is mainly contributed by the electronic excitations of higher occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) → lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO)+1 and HOMO-1 → LUMO. Judging from the key parameters determining the overall performance, 3 stands out because of its good planarity, large HOMO–LUMO gap, and strong aromaticity among all molecules. Interestingly, molecule 1 has the current density flow distributes around the outer section of TTH unit; in contrast, molecule 3 with DTT unit has the current density flow located at the inner section of DTT, which is beneficial for stability and aromaticity. Second-order perturbation energies are calculated to rationalize this observation. We expect that these research results can provide valuable insights into the rational design of novel molecular materials for a variety of applications.

Predicted Reversal in N-Methylazepine/N-Methyl-7-azanorcaradiene Equilibrium Upon Formation of Their N-Oxides

Density functional calculations and up to five different basis sets have been applied to the exploration of the structural, enthalpy and free energy changes upon conversion of the azepine to the corresponding N-oxide. Although it is well known that azepines are typically much more stable than their 7-azanorcaradiene valence isomers, the stabilities are reversed for the corresponding N-oxides. Structural, thermochemical as well as nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) criteria are employed to probe the potential aromaticity, antiaromaticity and nonaromaticity of N-methylazepine, its 7-azanorcaradiene valence isomer. For the sake of comparison, analogous studies are performed on N-methylpyrrole and its N-oxide.

Gianetti T, Ostendorf D, Dey S, Mougel V, Grützmacher H. Synthesis and Characterization of Ion Pairs between Alkaline Metal Ions and Anionic Anti-Aromatic and Aromatic Hydrocarbons with π-Conjugated Central Seven- and Eight-Membered Rings

The synthesis, isolation and full characterization of ion pairs between alkaline metal ions (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺) and mono-anions and dianions obtained from 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenyl (C₁₅H₁₁ = trop) is reported. According to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray analysis and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the trop^‒ and trop^2−• anions show anti-aromatic properties which are dependent on the counter cation M⁺ and solvent molecules serving as co-ligands. For comparison, the disodium and dipotassium salt of the dianion of dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraene (C₁₆H₁₂ = dbcot) were prepared, which show classical aromatic character. A d⁸-Rh(I) complex of trop⁻ was prepared and the structure shows a distortion of the C₁₅H₁₁ ligand into a conjugated 10π -benzo pentadienide unit—to which the Rh(I) center is coordinated—and an aromatic 6π electron benzo group which is non-coordinated. Electron transfer reactions between neutral and anionic trop and dbcot species show that the anti-aromatic compounds obtained from trop are significantly stronger reductants.

A Neutral Three-Membered 2π Aromatic Disilaborirane and the Unique Conversion into a Four-Membered BSi2 N-Ring

We report the design, synthesis, structure, bonding, and reaction of a neutral 2π aromatic three‐membered disilaborirane. The disilaborirane is synthesized by a facile one‐pot reductive dehalogenation of amidinato‐silylene chloride and dibromoarylborane with potassium graphite. Despite the tetravalent arrangement of atoms around silicon, the three‐membered silicon‐boron‐silicon ring is aromatic, as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy, nucleus independent chemical shift calculations, first‐principles electronic structure studies using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) based bonding analysis. Trimethylsilylnitrene, generated in situ, inserts in the Si−Si bond of disilaborirane to obtain a four‐membered heterocycle 1‐aza‐2,3‐disila‐4‐boretidine derivative. Both the heterocycles are fully characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

Probing the Origin of Adaptive Aromaticity in 16-Valence-Electron Metallapentalenes

Species with adaptive aromaticity are aromatic in the ground and lowest-lying triplet excited states and they have normally intermediate singlet-triplet gaps. Few examples of compounds with adaptive aromaticity are known to date, including 16-valence-electron (16e) metallapentalenes. A sweeping search could be conducted to discover new members of this group, but efficient designs with an explicit strategy would facilitate the quest for new members of this elusive family. Density functional theory calculations and aromaticity evaluations have been performed to reveal the nature of triplet-state aromaticity in 16e metallapentalenes. Our results show that coordination of strong σ- or π-donor ligands helps achieving adaptive aromaticity of 16e metallapentalenes by means of a spin delocalization mechanism. These results have important implications for understanding the unusual properties of the organometallic adaptive aromatics, leading the way to efficient design of new compounds with tunable singlet-triplet gaps.

Expanded Carbaporphyrinoids

This Review outlines the progress in the field of synthetic expanded carbaporphyrinoids. The evolution of this topic is demonstrated with expanded porphyrin-inspired systems with a variety of incorporated entities that introduce one or more carbon atoms into the cavity. The discussion starts with platyrins-the macrocycles that were identified as parent molecules of not only the expanded carbaporphyrinoids, but the carbaporphyrinoid class in general. After historic considerations, the plethora of expanded porphyrin-like macrocycles containing N-confused or neo-confused pyrrole motifs and different carbocyclic subunits are presented. Special emphasis is given to applications of expanded carbaporphyrinoids in different areas, including organometallic chemistry, switching systems, or aromaticity, concluding with the demonstration of a covalent cage based on an expanded carbaporphyrinoid.

Unique Role of Heterole-Fused Structures in Aromaticity and Physicochemical Properties of 7,8-Dehydropurpurins

Porphyrins with a fused five-membered ring, such as 7,8-dehydropurpurins, have appeared as an emerging class of unique porphyrinoids. Their altered absorption spectra, relatively short lifetimes of excited states, and small HOMO-LUMO gaps arise from the harmony of the antiaromatic 20π-circuit and the aromatic 18π-circuit. In this regard, the electronic properties of 7,8-dehydropurpurins are expected to be controlled by modulating the contribution of the antiaromatic π-circuit to the whole aromaticity. Here the comparison of pyrrole- and phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins is reported in terms of their aromaticity and physicochemical properties. The spectroscopic investigation revealed the larger contribution of the antiaromatic 24π-circuit in pyrrole-fused 7,8-dehyrdopurpurins than in phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins. The DFT calculations also supported the feasibility of tuning the aromaticity of 7,8-dehydropurpurins by heterole-fused structures. Thus, the introduction of heterole-fused structures into porphyrinoids is a universal strategy to get new insight into aromaticity and their intrinsic properties in cyclic π-conjugated molecules.

NIR-Absorbing π-Extended Azulene: Non-Alternant Isomer of Terrylene Bisimide

The first planar π-extended azulene that retains aromaticity of odd-membered rings was synthesized by [3+3] peri-annulation of two naphthalene imides at both long-edge sides of azulene. Using bromination and subsequent nucleophilic substitution by methoxide and morpholine, selective functionalization of the π-extended azulene was achieved. Whilst these new azulenes can be regarded as isomers of terrylene bisimide they exhibit entirely different properties, which include very narrow optical and electrochemical gaps. DFT, TD-DFT, as well as nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations were applied to explain the structural and functional properties of these new π scaffolds. Furthermore, X-ray crystallography confirmed the planarity of the reported π-scaffolds and aromaticity of their azulene moiety.

Factors Governing the Chemical Stability and NMR Parameters of Uracil Tautomers and Its 5-Halogen Derivatives

We report on the density functional theory (DFT) modelling of structural, energetic and NMR parameters of uracil and its derivatives (5-halogenouracil (5XU), X = F, Cl, Br and I) in vacuum and in water using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the solvent model density (SMD) approach. On the basis of the obtained results, we conclude that the intramolecular electrostatic interactions are the main factors governing the stability of the six tautomeric forms of uracil and 5XU. Two indices of aromaticity, the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA), satisfying the geometric criterion, and the nuclear independent chemical shift (NICS), were applied to evaluate the aromaticity of uracil and its derivatives in the gas phase and water. The values of these parameters showed that the most stable tautomer is the least aromatic. A good performance of newly designed xOPBE density functional in combination with both large aug-cc-pVQZ and small STO(1M)-3G basis sets for predicting chemical shifts of uracil and 5-fluorouracil in vacuum and water was observed. As a practical alternative for calculating the chemical shifts of challenging heterocyclic compounds, we also propose B3LYP calculations with small STO(1M)-3G basis set. The indirect spin-spin coupling constants predicted by B3LYP/aug-cc-pVQZ(mixed) method reproduce the experimental data for uracil and 5-fluorouracil well.

Non-conventional Hydrogen Bonding and Aromaticity: A Systematic Study on Model Nucleobases and Their Solvated Clusters

The conceptual development of aromaticity is essential to rationalize and understand the structure and behavior of aromatic heterocycles. This work addresses for the first time, the interconnection between aromaticity and sulfur/selenium centered hydrogen bonds (S/SeCHBs) involved in representative heterocycle models of canonical nucleobases (2-Pyridone; 2PY) and its sulfur (2-Thiopyridone; 2TPY) and selenium (2-Selenopyridone; 2SePY) analogs. The nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) and gauge induced magnetic current density (GIMIC) values suggested significant reduction of aromaticity upon replacement of exocyclic carbonyl oxygen with sulfur and selenium. However, we observed two-fold (57 %) and three-fold (80 %) enhancement in the aromaticity for 2TPY dimer, and 2SePY dimer, respectively which are connected through S/SeCHBs. Aromaticity enhancement was also noticed in 1 : 1 H-bonded complexes (heterodimers), micro hydrated clusters and for bulk hydration. It is expected that exocyclic S and Se incorporation into heterocycles without compromising aromatic loss would definitely reinforce to design new supramolecular building blocks via S/SeCH-bonded complexes.

Effect of Alkali Metal Cations on Length and Strength of Hydrogen Bonds in DNA Base Pairs

For many years, non-covalently bonded complexes of nucleobases have attracted considerable interest. However, there is a lack of information about the nature of hydrogen bonding between nucleobases when the bonding is affected by metal coordination to one of the nucleobases, and how the individual hydrogen bonds and aromaticity of nucleobases respond to the presence of the metal cation. Here we report a DFT computational study of nucleobase pairs interacting with alkali metal cations. The metal cations contribute to the stabilization of the base pairs to varying degrees depending on their position. The energy decomposition analysis revealed that the nature of bonding between nucleobases does not change much upon metal coordination. The effect of the cations on individual hydrogen bonds were described by changes in VDD charges on frontier atoms, H-bond length, bond energy from NBO analysis, and the delocalization index from QTAIM calculations. The aromaticity changes were determined by a HOMA index.

Mutual Relations between Substituent Effect, Hydrogen Bonding, and Aromaticity in Adenine-Uracil and Adenine-Adenine Base Pairs

The electronic structure of substituted molecules is governed, to a significant extent, by the substituent effect (SE). In this paper, SEs in selected nucleic acid base pairs (Watson-Crick, Hoogsteen, adenine-adenine) are analyzed, with special emphasis on their influence on intramolecular interactions, aromaticity, and base pair hydrogen bonding. Quantum chemistry methods-DFT calculations, the natural bond orbital (NBO) approach, the Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA) index, the charge of the substituent active region (cSAR) model, and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM)-are used to compare SEs acting on adenine moiety and H-bonds from various substitution positions. Comparisons of classical SEs in adenine with those observed in para- and meta-substituted benzenes allow for the better interpretation of the obtained results. Hydrogen bond stability and its other characteristics (e.g., covalency) can be significantly changed as a result of the SE, and its consequences are dependent on the substitution position. These changes allow us to investigate specific relations between H-bond parameters, leading to conclusions concerning the nature of hydrogen bonding in adenine dimers-e.g., H-bonds formed by five-membered ring nitrogen acceptor atoms have an inferior, less pronounced covalent nature as compared to those formed by six-membered ring nitrogen. The energies of individual H-bonds (obtained by the NBO method) are analyzed and compared to those predicted by the Espinosa-Molins-Lecomte (EML) model. Moreover, both SE and H-bonds can significantly affect the aromaticity of adenine rings; long-distance SEs on π-electron delocalization are also documented.

Rationalizing the AlI -Promoted Oxidative Addition of C-C Versus C-H Bonds in Arenes

The factors controlling the oxidative addition of C-C and C-H bonds in arenes mediated by Al^I have been computationally explored by means of Density Functional Theory calculations. To this end, we compared the processes involving benzene, naphthalene and anthracene which are promoted by a recently prepared anionic Al^I -carbenoid. It is found that this species exhibits a strong tendency to oxidatively activate C-H bonds over C-C bonds, with the notable exception of benzene, where the C-C bond activation is feasible but only under kinetic control reaction conditions. State-of-the-art computational methods based on the combination of the Activation Strain Model of reactivity and the Energy Decomposition Analysis have been used to rationalize the competition between both bond activation reactions as well as to quantitatively analyze in detail the ultimate factors controlling these transformations.

Role of Tyr-39 for the Structural Features of α-Synuclein and for the Interaction with a Strong Modulator of Its Amyloid Assembly

Recent studies suggest that Tyr-39 might play a critical role for both the normal function and the pathological dysfunction of α-synuclein (αS), an intrinsically disordered protein involved in Parkinson’s disease. We perform here a comparative analysis between the structural features of human αS and its Y39A, Y39F, and Y39L variants. By the combined application of site-directed mutagenesis, biophysical techniques, and enhanced sampling molecular simulations, we show that removing aromatic functionality at position 39 of monomeric αS leads to protein variants populating more compact conformations, conserving its disordered nature and secondary structure propensities. Contrasting with the subtle changes induced by mutations on the protein structure, removing aromaticity at position 39 impacts strongly on the interaction of αS with the potent amyloid inhibitor phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate (PcTS). Our findings further support the role of Tyr-39 in forming essential inter and intramolecular contacts that might have important repercussions for the function and the dysfunction of αS.

Dinickelaferrocene: A Ferrocene Analogue with Two Aromatic Nickeloles Realized by Electron Back-Donation from Iron

The first example of ferrocene analogues with two transition-metal metallole ligands of the general formula (η⁵ -C₄ R₄ M)₂ Fe in a sandwich structure are reported. Specifically, dinickelaferrocene 2, a type of dimetallametallocene, is efficiently synthesized from the reaction of dilithionickelole 1 with FeBr₂ or FeCl₂ , presumably via a redox process, and is subjected to detailed experimental (single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, ICP-OES, magnetometry, ⁵⁷ Fe Mössbauer, XPS) and theoretical (MOs, CDA, NICS, ICSS, and AICD) characterizations. Unlike ferrocene and its Cp ligands, the aromaticity of dinickelaferrocene and its nickelole ligands is accomplished by electron back-donation from the Fe 3d orbitals to the π* orbitals of nickelole. Taken together, this work describes a new class of metallaferrocene sandwich complexes and provides a novel approach to effect aromaticity that will contribute to further development of metallocene chemistry.

A study on the aromaticity and magnetic properties of N-confused porphyrins

In this paper, topological resonance energy (TRE) methods were used to describe the global aromaticity of nitrogen confused porphyrin (NCP) isomers. The TRE results show that all NCP isomers exhibit lower aromaticity than the normal porphyrins, and their aromaticity decreases as the number of confused pyrrole rings in the molecule increases. In the NCPs, global aromaticity decreases as the distance between the nitrogen atoms increases. The bond resonance energy (BRE) and circuit resonance energy (CRE) indices were applied to study local aromaticity and conjugated pathways. Both the BRE and CRE indices revealed that individual pyrrolic subunits maintain their strong aromatic character and are the main source of global aromaticity. Ring currents (RC) were analysed using the Hückel-London model. RC results revealed that the macrocyclic electron conjugation pathway is the main source of diatropicity. As the number of confused pyrrole rings in the molecule increases, its diatropicity gradually decreases. In the confused pyrrole rings of the NCP isomers, the diatropic RC passing through the β-positions is always weaker than that passing through the inner sections. This is unrelated to the location of the protonated or non-protonated nitrogen atom at the periphery of the molecule and must be ascribed to the unique properties of the confused pyrrole rings.

Oxidation-Induced Detachment of Ruthenoarene Units and Oxygen Insertion in Bis-Pd(II) Hexaphyrin π-Ruthenium Complexes

Two types of new bis-Pd(II) hexaphyrin π-ruthenium complexes are reported. A double-decker bis-Pd(II) hexaphyrin π-ruthenium complex 4 was obtained by oxidation-induced detachment of a ruthenoarene unit from the triple-decker complex 3 and oxygen-inserted triple-decker bis-Pd(II) hexaphyrin π-ruthenium complex 6 was obtained upon treatment of bis-Pd(II) [26]hexaphyrin 5 with [RuCl₂(p-cymene)]₂ under aerobic conditions. Although π-metal complexation of porphyrinoids often results in decreased global aromaticity due to the enhancement of local 6π aromatic segments, distinct aromatic characters were indicated for 4 and 6 by ¹H-NMR spectral and theoretical calculations. These results are accounted for in terms of possible resonance contributors of hexaphyrin di- and tetraanion ligands. Thus, π-metal coordination has been shown to be effective for modulation of the overall aromaticity.

Differential Effects of Nitrogen Substitution in 5- and 6-Membered Aromatic Motifs

The replacement of carbon with nitrogen can affect the aromaticity of organic rings. Nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations at the center of the aromatic π-systems reveal that incorporating nitrogen into 5-membered heteroaromatic dienes has only a small influence on aromaticity. In contrast, each nitrogen incorporated into benzene results in a sequential and substantial loss of aromaticity. The contrasting effects of nitrogen substitution in 5-membered dienes and benzene are reflected in their Diels-Alder reactivities as dienes. 1,2-Diazine experiences a 10¹¹ -fold increase in reactivity upon nitrogen substitution at the 4- and 5-positions, whereas a 5-membered heteroaromatic diene, furan, experiences a comparatively incidental 10² -fold increase in reactivity upon nitrogen substitution at the 3- and 4-positions.

A Nanoboat with Fused Concave N-Heterotriangulene

The surface extension of all-carbon based bowl-shaped molecules, such as corannulene and sumanene, to synthesize even larger buckybowls has been widely studied, leaving other concave compounds with heteroatoms less considered. Herein we present a highly curved molecule synthesized via stepwise cyclization of fjords of a bisacridone derivative. Crystallographic analysis unambiguously confirmed a boat-shaped structure with deformed bottom benzene ring. Theoretical calculation unravels an inversion process with an S-shaped transition structure rather than a planar one. The enlarged boat demonstrates interesting properties, such as red shifts in absorption and emission spectra, enhanced emission intensity, and convergent frontier molecular orbital energy levels, in comparison to the related concave N-heterotriangulene.

Delocalization in Substituted Benzene Dications: A Magnetic Point of View

In this work, the induced magnetic field is analyzed for a series of substituted benzenes dications with formula C6R62+ (R=I, At, SeH, SeCH3, TeH, TeCH3), presumably exhibiting concentric aromaticity. Previous studies concluded that in the carbon skeleton, just π-electrons are delocalized. However, our results support that both the σ- and π-electrons are delocalized in the carbon skeleton, combined with a σ-delocalization in the external ring. The role of the relativistic effects in these dications is discussed in detail.

Switching between Local and Global Aromaticity in a Conjugated Macrocycle for High-Performance Organic Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

Aromatic organic compounds can be used as electrode materials in rechargeable batteries and are expected to advance the development of both anode and cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, most aromatic organic compounds assessed as anode materials in SIBs to date exhibit significant degradation issues under fast-charge/discharge conditions and unsatisfying long-term cycling performance. Now, a molecular design concept is presented for improving the stability of organic compounds for battery electrodes. The molecular design of the investigated compound, [2.2.2.2]paracyclophane-1,9,17,25-tetraene (PCT), can stabilize the neutral state by local aromaticity and the doubly reduced state by global aromaticity, resulting in an anode material with extraordinarily stable cycling performance and outstanding performance under fast-charge/discharge conditions, demonstrating an exciting new path for the development of electrode materials for SIBs and other types of batteries.

Synthesis and Properties of NitroHPHAC: The First Example of Substitution Reaction on HPHAC

Hexapyrrolohexaazacoronene (HPHAC) is one of the N-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in which six pyrroles are fused circularly around a benzene. Despite the recent development of HPHAC analogues, there is no report on direct introduction of functional groups into the HPHAC skeleton. This work reports the first example of nitration reaction of decaethylHPHAC. The structures of nitrodecaethylHPHAC including neutral and two oxidized species (radical cation and dication), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character, and global aromaticity of the dication are discussed.
