Abstract
By using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we studied 11 patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA): 5 olivo-pontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA), 2 Shy-Drager syndrome (SDS), and 4 striatonigral degeneration (SND). The diagnoses of OPCA, SDS and SND were clinically made. The MR images were performed on 1.5 tesla MRI unit (Siemens Asahi Medical, Magnetom H15), using a T2-weighted spin echo (SE) sequence (TR: 2000-3000ms, TE: 80-90ms), a T1-weighted SE sequence (TR: 550, TE: 15), and a proton density-weighted (PD) SE sequence (TR: 2000-3000, TE: 12-22). In the patients with OPCA, MRI revealed cerebellar and brainstem atrophy and degeneration of pontine transverse fibers more marked than in the patients with SDS and SND. T2-weighted images showed low intensity in posterolateral putamina in one OPCA patient and all of SDS and SND patients. PD images demonstrated the abnormal slit-like high signals in posterolateral putamina in three SND. The degree of cerebellar ataxia was not well correlated with cerebellar and brainstem atrophy and degeneration of pontine transverse fibers. There was a positive correlation between the atrophy of cerebellum and brainstem and the duration of cerebellar ataxia. In most of the patients with parkinsonism, MRI demonstrated abnormal low signals in putamina on T2-weighted images. There were positive correlations between the abnormal low signals putamina and the duration and severity of parkinsonism. Though abnormal low signals in lateral putamina may be seen in normal aging and other disorders on T2-weighted images, it is useful to evaluate parkinsonism in MSA.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A case, diagnosed as 18p-syndrome by typical clinical appearance and by chromosomal analysis, presented with multiple nervous system defects consisting of bilateral pyramidal tract signs, weakness and focal dystonia of the lower extremities, and concentric visual field defect. Chromosomal analysis revealed karyotype 46, X, dic (Y;18) (p11;p11), inv(9) (p11q13), and the points of chromosomal breakages were thought to be in the short arm of chromosome 18 and in the short arm of Y chromosome. 18p-syndrome is caused by a chromosomal deletion, and presents with a wide variety of clinical appearances. Many cases have been reported since the original descriptions by de Grouchy in 1963, though with few mentions of neurological deficits other than mental retardation. Furthermore, there have been no reports of pyramidal tract signs, weakness and focal dystonia of the lower extremities, or visual field defect, without recognizable anatomical abnormalities. Our case of 18p-syndrome is quite rare because of multiple nervous system abnormalities mentioned above, not accompanied by malformations of the central nervous system.

Abstract
We report an 80-year-old woman with hemichorea probably due to amantadine hydrochloride. She visited our hospital because of gait disturbance and decreased mental activity. She was diagnosed as multiple cerebral infarctions and treated with 100 mg/day of amantadine hydrochloride. After two weeks she showed choreic movement of the face and right arm and leg. Haloperidol was administered and her choreic movement disappeared. Brain MRI showed multiple cerebral infarctions in the white matter. There was no lesion in the left basal ganglia. SPECT showed hyperperfusion in the left basal ganglia when choreic movement appeared. After choreic movement disappeared, SPECT showed no asymmetrical blood flow. These findings suggest hemichorea was related to hyperfunction of dopaminergic neurons in the left basal ganglia.

Abstract
A total of 6,457 autopsy protocols were reviewed to identify 70 women who died of ovarian cancer. 1. Epithelial tumors were the most common tumor (74%). Twenty% were germ cell tumors. There were two cases each of sarcoma and stromal cell tumors. 2. The patients with germ cell tumors were younger than those with epithelial tumors. The duration of the epithelial tumor disease was longer than that of germ cell tumor. 3. The most common mechanism of death was carcinomatosis (69%). Eight of 70 patients (11%) had respiratory failure. One case of subacute cor pulmonale was due to tumor embolization. One case had a rupture of the portal vein. 4. The peritoneum was most frequently involved in every tumor (87%). The liver was the second most frequent site (73%). Other frequent metastatic sites included the lungs (44%), and spleen (47%). Lymph nodes including the paraaortic, pelvic and mesenteric were also very frequent metastatic sites. 5. CDDP containing regimens were used in 33 cases (47%). FAMT regimen was the second most common treatment (15.7%). Another common treatment is whole abdominal radiotherapy (14%). The patients treated with the CDDP containing regimen had a significantly longer survival time (23.4 months) than those treated with FAMT (19.2 months) and others (13.6 months). 6. For metastasis to the lungs, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes the patients treated with the CDDP containing regimen were more numerous than those treated without CDDP. For metastasis to the kidneys, the patients treated without CDDP were more numerous than those treated with CDDP containing regimens.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
We describe a technique for isolation and primary culture of bovine hepatocytes, and their metabolic characterization. Hepatocytes were isolated from the caudate lobe of bovine liver by perfusion with 0.25 mM ethylene-glycol tetraacetic acid and 0.05% collagenase. The viability and yield of the cells were 70-92% and 0.1-3.6 x 10(7) cells/g liver, respectively. When the isolated hepatocytes were cultured in Williams' medium E, they began to spread in 3 hr and formed monolayers in 24 hr. These monolayers were retained for at least 6 days. To monitor the metabolic activities specific to liver, synthesis and secretion of albumin were measured by labeling with [35S]-methionine and immunoprecipitation. This activity was low in isolated hepatocytes, but increased after culturing 1-3 days, and decreased again after 6 days. Glycogenolytic activity was also assessed by measuring glucose release to the medium by stimulation with epinephrine. The glycogenolytic response to epinephrine was also enhanced by culturing the hepatocytes 1-3 days, but was decreased after 6 days. Since the isolated bovine hepatocytes retained the liver-specific activities of albumin synthesis and glycogenolysis for several days in culture, these cells are useful for cellular and molecular studies on the functions of bovine liver.

Abstract
Two patients with neuroblastoma of the central nervous system are described. The first, a 10-month-old male infant with symptoms of vomiting and weakness of the right upper extremity, was found on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to have enhanced mass lesion in the left hemisphere, vermis of the cerebellum and part of brain stem. The second, a 3-year-old boy who had swelling of the right side of the head, was found on computed tomography (CT) to have enhanced mass lesion of the frontal hemisphere and frontal bone. Histological examination of the surgical specimen of both cases demonstrated neuronal differentiation. The clinicopathological features of cerebellar neuroblastoma in comparison with metastatic neuroblastoma of the frontal lobe were discussed.

Abstract
A patient with a Sertoli-stromal cell tumor (SSCT) that contained metastatic lung cancer tissue is described, the first such report. The left ovarian tumor, which developed in a patient known to have lung cancer, mainly exhibited the histology of SSCT with a retiform pattern, and included a component of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical specific stain for surfactant distinguished the adenocarcinoma from the primary ovarian tumor.

Abstract
The effects of linoleic acid hydroperoxide on the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) including MMP-1 (tissue collagenase), -2 ("type IV collagenase"), and -3 (stromelysin) and of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), as well as DNA synthesis were investigated in rheumatoid synovial fibroblasts. Our results demonstrated that the levels of proMMP-1 and -3 and TIMP-1 were extremely elevated when 0.5-2.0 nmole/ml of linoleic acid hydroperoxide was added to cultures of rheumatoid synovial fibroblasts. DNA synthesis, however, was inhibited by linoleic acid hydroperoxide. These results indicate that lipid peroxide causes the disruption of extracellular matrix macromolecules and the inhibition of cell repair in synovial tissue. Therefore, they also suggest that an elevated level of oxygen free radical and/or lipid peroxides in synovial fluid may play an important role in the process of rheumatoid arthritis, resulting in the disruption of the joint.

Abstract
Eight unusual esophageal carcinomas chiefly composed of basaloid cells were defined as "esophageal carcinomas with basaloid features", and analyzed by clinicopathologic findings and immunohistochemical staining with antibodies against S-100, actin, vimentin, and cytokeratin. These tumors were classified into five basaloid-squamous cell carcinomas (BSC), 2 adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), and 1 non-small cell type-undifferentiated carcinoma based on the Guidelines for the Clinical and Pathologic Studies on Carcinoma of the Esophagus edited by the Japanese Society for Esophageal Disease. Some histologic patterns of BSC, ACC, or undifferentiated carcinoma were resembled to each others. However, BSC was characterized by solid growth of basaloid cells with microcystic pattern or peripheral palisading arrangement, and it showed simultaneous presence of squamous cell carcinoma or squamous differentiation. In immunohistochemical staining, immunoreactivity for cytokeratin alone was positive in one of five BSCs. On the other hand, ACC showed cribiriform pattern and high mitotic activities, excluding typical cribriform pattern in ACC of the salivary gland. In addition to these features, the presence of foci of squamous cell carcinoma was occasionally found and positive immunoreactivities for S-100 and actin were recognized. Therefore, the immunohistochemical staining was useful for distinction among ACC and other tumors. As to the prognosis, BSC and ACC have been reported that both tumors are aggressive neoplasm with poor prognosis. In our studies, all of 5 patients with BSC were survived more than three years after surgery. Abstract
Effects of dexamethasone, retinoic acid, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and Iloprost as a agonist of prostacyclin (A-PGI2) on DNA synthesis and production of a precursor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (tissue procollagenase/proMMP-1) by human aortic smooth muscle cells were investigated. When after treatment with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), these agents were added to the cultures, DNA synthesis and production of proMMP-1 were inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that these agents are negative regulators of PDGF. Since these agents are present in the blood or produced in the blood wall, in addition, since PDGF plays the most important role in the process of atherosclerosis, we propose that these agents function in vivo as a systems of protection against atherosclerosis.

Abstract
A cell line derived from medial smooth muscle cells (SMC) was established from the porcine coronary artery by transfection with ori-defective simian virus 40 plasmid DNA (SV40 DNA). The characteristics of transfected cells (SV40-SMC) such as cell growth, collagen and non-collagen syntheses were investigated. SV40-SMC expressed SV40 large T antigen, c-myc and c-myb encoded proteins in the nuclei. SV40-SMC demonstrated a 'hills and valleys'-like arrangement in overconfluence and actin filaments upon immunofluorescent staining. Under electron microscopic observation, SV40-SMC had larger amounts of synthetic organelles and smaller amounts of filament bundles than those of SMC. SV40-SMC demonstrated three times higher growth activity and 4.4 times greater cellular density than SMC. Smooth muscle cells did not grow in media containing 5% plasma derived serum (PDS) instead of normal serum, whereas SV40-SMC proliferated in this medium. SV40-SMC did not grow in soft agar gel, while HeLa S3 cells, a cell line of human cervical carcinoma, formed colonies in this gel. By immunofluorescent (IF) staining, collagen phenotypes I, III, IV and V were detected in both SV40-SMC and SMC. However, protein synthesis including collagen and non-collagen was higher in SV40-SMC than in the control sample. It was concluded that SV40-SMC were a continuous cell line for vascular SMC regarding morphological characteristics, and demonstrated a higher growth activity, with increased collagen and non-collagen syntheses. This cell line is useful for the investigation of atherogenesis in relation to a proliferation of SMC and an accumulation of extracellular matrices in vascular intima.

Abstract
We reported a 28-year-old man with adrenoleukodystrophy showing neurological features of olivopontocerebellar atrophy. He had a 11-year history of Addison's disease. ACTH stimulation produced no rise in the plasma cortisol level. The ratios of C24:0/C22:0, C25:0/C22:0, and C26:0/C22:0 in fatty acids of sphingomyelin from plasma were all increased. MRI showed the atrophy of brainstem and cerebellum and the abnormal hyperintense lesions of the bilateral pyramidal tracts in the brainstem and internal capsule. 99mTc-HM PAO SPECT showed hypoperfusion of the deep white matter, frontal lobes, temporal lobes, and cerebellum. We suggest that SPECT may be useful for detection of subclinical lesions in ALD.

Abstract
A 60-year-old man developed confusional state with severely abnormal electroencephalogram and brain edema on computed tomography (CT) of brain. Adrenocorticosteroid therapy was dramatically effective for the confusional state and brain edema. The reduction of adrenocorticosteroid induced confusional states, and they disappeared with the increase of adrenocorticosteroid. When brain edema on CT disappeared, T 2-weighted magnetic resonance imagings revealed diffuse high signal in the white matter. A diagnosis of isolated adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency was made by endocrinological examinations and clinical features. We suggest that brain edema in this patient is due to deficiency of glucocorticoid. High intensity area in the white matter may show the degeneration of the white matter following brain edema.

Abstract
The effect of linoleic acid hydroperoxide on the production of proforms of matrix metalloproteinase-1, -2, and -3 (proMMP-1, -2, and -3) in cultured human arterial endothelial and smooth muscle cells was investigated. Upon cultivation of the endothelial cells in the absence of the hydroperoxide, only proMMP-1 was detected, and its amount was increased by cultivation with the hydroperoxide. In the cultures of the intimal smooth muscle cells in the absence of the hydroperoxide, a large amount of proMMP-2 and small amounts of proMMP-1 and -3 were detected, and the hydroperoxide treatment increased remarkably the amounts of proMMP-1 and -3, but rather decreased the amount of proMMP-2. In the cultures of the medial smooth muscle cells, the same tendency was observed. However, the amounts of these proenzymes found in the intimal smooth muscle cells exceeded those found in the medial smooth muscle cells, both in the absence and in the presence of the hydroperoxide. Possible involvement of these phenomena in atherogenesis was discussed.

Abstract
This paper describes the avidity of IgG antibody used for preparation of latex sensitized with IgG antibody (IgG-sensitized latex) and the agglutinability of IgG-sensitized latex in slide reversed passive latex agglutination (RPLA). Using immunodiffusion techniques, it was found that anti-canine C-reactive protein (CRP) sera from four rabbits immunized with canine CRP had the same antibody titers. However, the antibodies had different levels of avidity. When lattices were sensitized under the same condition with the IgG antibodies of different avidity levels separated from the above-mentioned antisera using Protein A and canine CRP-Sepharose 4B immunosorbent, these demonstrated different patterns of agglutinability in slide RPLA. Abstract
The canine C-reactive protein (CRP) fraction isolated from canine acute-phase serum on a phosphorylcholine-Sepharose 4B column was further subjected to Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration. A canine CRP fraction not containing IgM was then obtained. The antisera, obtained after several immunizations with this canine CRP fraction, contained nonspecific antibodies that reacted with albumin, transferrin and IgG in addition to CRP. This antiserum could be easily changed to monospecific canine CRP serum, when it was subjected to absorption for only 15 min using glutaraldehyde-insolubilized normal canine serum protein containing 3.5 micrograms ml-1 of CRP. Pure canine CRP was isolated with a recovery rate of 95% from canine acute-phase serum by affinity chromatography using specific anti-canine CRP antibody.

Abstract
We demonstrated that four human oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (TE8, TE9, TE10 and TE11) produced matrix metalloproteinase-1 (proMMP-1/tissue collagenase), 2 (ProMMP-2/'type IV collagenase'), 3 (proMMP-3/stromelysin), and 9 (proMMP-9/92-kDa gelatinase) as members of a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, which degrades extracellular matrix macromolecules. Under normal culture conditions, in immunoblot analysis, proMMP-1 of M(r) = 53,00 was detected in one cell line (TE8), proMMP-2 of M(r) = 72,000 in three cell lines (TE9, TE10, and TE11), and proMMP-3 of M(r) = 57,000 in all four cell lines. In addition to these enzymes, in enzymography, a gelatinolytic activity around M(r) = 92-kDa, likely to be proMMP-9, was detected in only one cell line (TE10) under normal culture conditions. When these cell lines were treated with epidermal growth factor (EGF), however, the agent stimulated three cell lines (TE8, TE10 and TE11) to produce proMMP-9 in a dose-dose dependent manner. Oesophageal carcinoma-conditioned medium stimulated oesophageal fibroblasts to produce proMMP-1, -2, and -3, suggesting that the interaction between oesophageal carcinoma and stromal fibroblasts also plays a role in the production of MMPs by the latter. Our present study illustrates that oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma produces a variety of MMPs including proMMP-1, -2, -3, and -9 in vitro, suggesting that the ability of MMP production of the tumour may play an important role in its malignant behaviour and that the production of proMMP-9 may be regulated by EGF via overexpression of EGF receptors.

Abstract
A 74-year-old woman, with hypertension and dilated cardiomyopathy, presented with sudden onset of diplopia without vertigo and other neurological symptom. Examination revealed left inferior rectus muscle paresis. Other neurological findings were normal. She had no cerebellar ataxia and sensori-motor dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed increased signal intensity on T2-weighted and proton density-weighted images in the right ventral midbrain, compatible with infarction involving the fascicular oculomotor fibers. Complete resolution of the diplopia and normal ocular motility were noted 3 months after the onset of the diplopia. Focal ischemic midbrain lesions should be considered in cases of isolated partial oculomotor nerve paresis.

Abstract
A 38-year-old woman complained for about 5 years of attacks of headache elicited by coughing, sneezing, and laughing. These attacks became more frequent and more severe. Physical examination showed a short and broad neck. Neurological examination revealed no abnormality. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the Chiari malformation (type I) and the cerebral venous angioma in left frontal white matter. A posterior decompression by suboccipital craniectomy with C1 laminectomy was performed. The headache completely disappeared. Before and after the operation, we measured the intracranial subdural pressure by a small pressure transducer. The raised cranial pressure by the Valsalva's maneuver prolonged for more than one minute. Postoperatively, the raised cranial pressure by the Valsalva's maneuver decreased rapidly. We consider that the cough headache of this patient was associated with a valve-like blockage by the Chiari malformation (type I) at the foramen magunum, resulting in cranio-spinal pressure dissociation by interference with downward pulsation. We believe that there was no correlation between the cough headache and the cerebral venous angioma.

Abstract
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis of canine serum protein has revealed that the administration of anthelmintics elicits an increase in a certain serum protein. This protein, named PT60, was partially purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and preparative electrophoresis. The purified PT60 gave a single band with the molecular size of 53 kDa in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under non-reducing conditions. After reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol, two bands appeared at 35 kDa and 17 kDa, indicating that PT60 consists of two subunits which are linked with each other by disulfide bonds. PT60 had the capacity to bind to hemoglobin. In an immunodiffusion test, an antiserum against PT60 cross-reacted with canine haptoglobin (Hp). N-terminal amino acid sequences of two PT60 subunits were identical to those of alpha and beta subunits of canine Hp, respectively. Thus, PT60 was identified as Hp.

Abstract
We describe five patients of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) following ingestion of oysters in January 1991, in Nagato, Yamaguchi. The five patients (four men and one woman, age range:37-80 years) developed symptoms three-nine hours after consuming oysters. Symptoms included paresthesia of the mouth and tongue (three), paresthesia of the extremities (five), and quadriparesis (five). The median duration of neurological symptoms was 16 hours. All five patients completely recovered. Although PSP is rare as compared with globe fish poisoning in Japan, the fatality rate of PSP is 8%-9%, with deaths occurring in one-12 hours secondary to respiratory failure. PSP is an important disorder for differential diagnosis of acute paralytic illnesses, such as globe fish poisoning, botulism, acute polyradiculoneuropathy, fisher syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and periodic paralysis.

Abstract
Simple bone cysts were treated by trepanation. The technique consists of drainage of cyst fluid, lavage of the cystic cavity with saline, and the making of multiple drilling holes through the cortical and the medullary bone of the cyst wall. Injection of corticosteroid was omitted. In 11 cases treated by this method, the clinical outcome was good. Biochemical analyses of the cyst fluid showed bone-resorptive factors, i.e., prostaglandins, interleukin 1, proteolytic enzymes. Electrophoretic analysis of proteolytic enzymes in polyacrylamide gel containing sodium dodecyl sulfate and polymerized gelatin showed proteins with molecular weights of about 130,000, 92,000, 72,000, and lower than 50,000. Increase in such bone-resorbing activities seems to be one of the causative factors in simple bone cysts. The technique was effective in decompressing the internal pressure of the cysts, improving the blood flow through the medullary bone of the cyst wall, stimulating the periosteum to induce bone formation, and eliminating bone destruction.
