Abstract
Acerola contains high levels of vitamin C and rutin and shows the corresponding antioxidant properties. Oxidative stress on the other hand is an important factor in the development of obesity. In this study, we investigated the biochemical and antigenotoxic effects of acerola juice in different stages of maturity (unripe, ripe and industrial) and its main pharmacologically active components vitamin C and rutin, when given as food supplements to obese mice. Initial HPLC analyses confirmed that all types of acerola juice contained high levels of vitamin C and rutin. DPPH tests quantified the antioxidant properties of these juices and revealed higher antioxidant potentials compared to pure vitamin C and rutin. In an animal test series, groups of male mice were fed on a standard (STA) or a cafeteria (CAF) diet for 13 weeks. The latter consisted of a variety of supermarket products, rich in sugar and fat. This CAF diet increased the feed efficiency, but also induced glucose intolerance and DNA damage, which was established by comet assays and micronucleus tests. Subsequently, CAF mice were given additional diet supplements (acerola juice, vitamin C or rutin) for one month and the effects on bone marrow, peripheral blood, liver, kidney, and brain were examined. The results indicated that food supplementation with ripe or industrial acerola juice led to a partial reversal of the diet-induced DNA damage in the blood, kidney, liver and bone marrow. For unripe acerola juice food supplementation, beneficial effects were observed in blood, kidney and bone marrow. Food supplementation with vitamin C led to decreased DNA damage in kidney and liver, whereas rutin supplementation led to decreased DNA damage in all tissue samples observed. These results suggest that acerola juice helps to reduce oxidative stress and may decrease genotoxicity under obesogenic conditions.

Abstract
A novel method for the separation/analysis of quercetin was described, which was based on the investigation of the inclusion interactions of β-cyclodextrin cross-linked polymer (β-CDCP) with quercetin (Qu) and the adsorption behavior of Qu on β-CDCP. The inclusion interaction of β-CDCP with Qu was studied through FTIR, TGA and 13C NMR. Under the optimum conditions, the preconcentration factor of the proposed method was approximately 8.8, the β-CDCP could be used repeatedly for 30 times and offered better recovery. The linear range, limit of detection (LOD) and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be 0.10-12.0 μg mL(-1), 4.6 ng mL(-1) and 3.10% (n=3, c=2.0 μg mL(-1)) respectively. This technique had been successfully applied to the determination of Qu in real samples.

Abstract
The influence of cluster-zone leaf removal on Pinot noir vine growth and fruit chemical and volatile composition was investigated in 3 years. Different severities of leaf removal (0%, 50%, 100%) were imposed during the pea-size stage of development from the cluster zone. Results show that cluster-zone leaf removal had little influence on vine growth, crop load, or grape maturity in terms of total soluble solids (TSS), pH or titratable acidity (TA) at harvest. However, 100% leaf removal resulted in higher concentrations of quercetin glycoside in grapes compared to 0% leaf removal. The 100% leaf removal also increased concentrations of petunidin- and malvidin-3-monoglucoside anthocyanins in two out of 3 years (2010 and 2012) by an average of 62% and 53%, respectively. In addition, 100% leaf removal resulted in higher concentrations of β-damascenone, and some bound-form terpenoids. The increases in β-damascenone were positively correlated to the increased sunlight exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Onion peel contains a high amount of quercetin, which has been reported to have anti-cholesterol, antithrombotic and insulin-sensitizing properties. This study aimed to elucidate the anti-adipogenic effects of quercetin-rich onion peel extract (OPE) and to compare it with commercially available quercetin using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. RESULTS Without affecting cell viability, both OPE and quercetin averted adipogenesis, as characterized by dose-dependent decreases in intracellular triglyceride content and glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, but the effect was more pronounced with OPE than with quercetin. The mRNA expression levels of key adipogenic genes such as PPARγ, C/EBPα, FABP4, aP2 and LPL were decreased in a dose-dependent manner by both OPE and quercetin. CONCLUSION The results indicate that OPE treatment significantly prevents intracellular lipid accumulation via hyperactivation of genes regulating lipolysis as compared with quercetin alone.

Abstract
Blackcurrant leaves are an essential source of phenolic compounds and this study investigated their variation relative to leaf positions and harvest date. The phenolic content varied between harvest dates, although leaf position on the shoot and interactions also played an important role. The contents of quercetin-malonyl-glucoside, kaempferol-malonyl-glucoside isomer and kaempferol-malonyl-glucoside were higher than that of the other identified phenolic compounds, whereas epigallocatechin was the lowest for all investigated leaf positions and harvest dates. The content of several of the compounds was highest in June, while quercetin-glucoside, kaempferol-glucoside and total phenols, increased towards the end of the season. Leaf position influenced the content of myricetin-malonyl-glucoside, myricetin-malonyl-glucoside isomer, quercetin-malonyl-glucoside and kaempferol-glucoside at the end of the season. Knowledge relating to the influence of ontogenetic and harvest time on the content of specific phenolic compounds might contribute in tailoring functional foods or pharmaceutical products using blackcurrant leaves as natural ingredients.

Abstract
The chemical constituents of 95% ethanol extract of Melastoma dodecandrum were isolated and purified by chromatography on silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and HPLC, to obtain thirteen compounds eventually. On the basis of their physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic data, these compounds were identified as quercetin (1), quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), quercetin-3-O-(6"-O-p-coumaroyl) -β-D-glucopyranoside (3), kaempferol (4), kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), kaempferol-3-O- [2",6"-di-O-(E)-coumaroyl]-β-D-glucopyra-noside (6), luteolin (7), luteolin-7-O-(6"-p-coumaroyl) -β-D-glucopyranoside (8), apigenin (9), apigenin-7-(6"-acetyl-glucopyranoside) (10) , naringenin (11), isovitexin (12), and epicatechin-[8,7-e] -4β-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,4-dyhydroxyl-2(3H)-pyranone (13). Eight compounds(3,5,6,8-11 and 13) were obtained from M. dodecandrum for the first time.

Abstract
Various food components are known for their health-promoting effects. However, their biochemical effects are generally evaluated in vitro, and their actual in vivo effect can vary significantly, depending on their metabolic profiles. To evaluate the effect of the liver metabolism on the antioxidant activity, we have developed a two-compartment microfluidic system that integrates the dynamics of liver metabolism and the subsequent antioxidant activity of food components. In the first compartment of the device, human liver enzyme fractions were immobilized inside a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel to mimic the liver metabolism. The radical scavenging activity was evaluated by the change of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) absorbance in the second compartment. Reaction engineering and fluid mechanics principles were used to develop a simplified analytical model and a more complex finite element model, which were used to design the chip and determine the optimal flow conditions. For real-time measurements of the reaction on a chip, we developed a custom-made photospectrometer system with an LED light source. The developed microfluidic system showed a linear and dose-dependent antioxidant activity in response to increasing concentration of flavonoid. We also compared the antioxidant activity of flavonoid after various liver metabolic reactions. This microfluidic system can serve as a novel in vitro platform for predicting the antioxidant activity of various food components in a more physiologically realistic manner, as well as for studying the mechanism of action of such food components.

Abstract
Camelina sativa L. Crantz is under development as a novel oilseed crop, yet bioefficacy of camelina phytochemicals is unknown. Defatted camelina seed meal contains two major aliphatic glucosinolates (GSLs), glucoarabin (9-(methylsulfinyl)nonylglucosinolate; GSL 9) and glucocamelinin (10-(methylsulfinyl)decylglucosinolate; GSL 10), with traces of a third, 11(methylsulfinyl)undecylglucosinolate and several flavonoids, mostly quercetin glycosides. In Hepa1c1c7 cells, hydrolyzed GSLs (hGSLs) 9 and 10 upregulated the phase II detoxification enzyme quinone reductase (NQO1), with no effect on cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 activity. Isobologram graphs revealed synergy of NQO1 induction for a combination of hGSL 9 and quercetin. These findings suggest that defatted camelina seed meal should be evaluated for anticancer activity, similar to broccoli and other Brassicaceae family members. Interestingly, synergy of NQO1 induction was also seen for physiologically relevant doses of sulforaphane (SF) and quercetin, two key bioactives present in broccoli. This suggests that SF within broccoli may be more potent than purified SF.

Abstract
Tilia genus is commonly used around the world for its central nervous system properties; it is prepared as tea and used as tranquilizing, anticonvulsant, and analgesic. In this study, anticonvulsant activity of the Tilia americana var. mexicana inflorescences and leaves was investigated by evaluating organic and aqueous extracts (100, 300, and 600 mg/kg, i.p.) and some flavonoids in the pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures in mice. Moreover, antioxidant effect of these extracts and flavonoids was examined in an in vitro study by using spectrophotometric technique. Significant activity was observed in the methanol extract from inflorescences. An HPLC analysis of the methanol extract from inflorescences and leaves of Tilia allowed demonstrating the respective presence of some partial responsible flavonoid constituents: quercetin (20.09 ± 1.20 μg/mg and 3.39 ± 0.10 μg/mg), rutin (3.52 ± 0.21 μg/mg and 8.94 ± 0.45 μg/mg), and isoquercitrin (1.74 ± 0.01 μg/mg and 1.24 ± 0.13 μg/mg). In addition, significant but different antioxidant properties were obtained among the flavonoids and the extracts investigated. Our results provide evidence of the anticonvulsant activity of Tilia reinforcing its utility for central nervous system diseases whose mechanism of action might involve partial antioxidant effects due to the presence of flavonoids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An HPLC method was established for determination of quercetin and kaempferol in Fagopyrum spp. of differrent species and different plant parts. METHODS The chromatographic separation was carried out on a DIKMA diamonsil (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 μm) chromatographic column. The mobile phase was acetonitrile (A) and 0.1% phosphoric acid solution (B) at the flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The detection wavelength was set at 260 nm and the column temperature was 25 degrees C. RESULTS The descending order of quercetin content in the samples of different parts of Fagopyrum tataricum was seed (6.12 mg/g) > leaf (1.47 mg/g) > stem (0.34 mg/g); quercetin was not found in root. Only a few kaempferol was found in seed (0.42 mg/g) and leaf of Xiqiao 1 (0.09 mg/g) of Fagopyrum tataricum. There were a few quercetin was determined in the whole plant of Fagopyrum esculentum, and kaempferol was not been found. The total and mean value concentration of quercetin and kaempferol of Fagopyrum tataricum were much higher than that of Fagopyrum esculentum. In different species of Fagopyrum tataricum planted in the same area, the content of quercetin and kaempferol was similar, they were not been found in Fagopyrum esculentum. CONCLUSION This method is simple, rapid, accurate and reliable for quality evaluation of Fagopyrum spp. and its commercial products.

The major 3-deoxyanthocyanin isolated from the fern Blechnum novae-zelandiae was determined to be luteolinidin 5-O-β-ᴅ-[3-O-β-ᴅ-glucopyranosyl-2-O-acetylglucopyranoside] and was found to co-occur with quercetin 3-O-β-ᴅ-[6-O-caffeoylglucopyranoside], quercetin 3-O-β-ᴅ-[6-O-caffeoylgalactopyranoside] and kaempferol 3-O-β-ᴅ-glucuronopyranoside. These pigments were identified by using HPLC chromatography, NMR (1ᴅ , 2ᴅ) and electrospray mass spectroscopy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Onion is undoubtedly one of the major sources of flavonoids. However, there exists a varietal difference in composition, concentration and beneficial activities of onion, on the basis of cultivars, day length sensitivity/ripening and types. To characterise such differences, 18 onion cultivars from Korean were evaluated for their total phenolics, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Simultaneous quantification of quercetin, quercetin-3,4'-O-diglucoside, quercetin-4'-O-monoglucoside and isorhamnetin-3-glucoside was made in methanol and 75% ethanol. RESULTS Total phenolic content was examined spectrophotometrically with the Folin-Ciocalteu phenol reagent and total antioxidant activity were studied by the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) methods. The cultivar 'Sunpower' showed the highest level of total phenolics [5016 ± 30.0 µg gallic acid equivalents g(-1) dry weight (DW)] and flavonoids (2873.95 ± 60.01 µg Q g(-1) DW) among the 18 cultivars in methanol. However, there were fewer total phenolics and flavonoids in ethanol extracts. The antioxidant activity for cultivar Sunpower was highest in ethanol extracts 24.12 ± 1.00 and 16.13 ± 0.35 µmol L(-1) Trolox equivalents g(-1) DW with FRAP and DPPH, respectively. CONCLUSION Among the 18 cultivars, Sunpower is the most promising in terms of total phenolics, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Our results suggest that day length sensitivity/ripening among the cultivars do not play any significant role for high values of total phenolics, flavonoids and antioxidant activity.

Abstract
A fluorometric microplate assay has been developed to determine Escherichia (E.) coli adhesion to uroepithelial cells (UEC). P-fimbriated E. coli were labeled with BacLight Green and preincubated 30 min with human urine or standard. Fluorescent-E. coli were added to UEC in mircoplates at a 400:1 ratio, incubated 1 h, and washed, and the fluorescence intensity was measured. Specific labeling and adherence were confirmed by flow cytometry. A myricetin (1) standard curve (0-30 μg/mL) was developed; the lower limit of detection was 0.1 μg/mL, and half-maximal inhibitory concentration was 0.88 μg/mL (intra- and interassay coefficients of variance were <10% and <15%, respectively). Vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) extracts, quercetin (2), and procyanidins B1 (3), B2 (4), and C1 (5) showed similar inhibition. Antiadhesion activity of urine samples from subjects (n = 12) consuming placebo or V. macrocarpon beverage determined using this assay was positively correlated (R(2) = 0.78; p < 0.01) with a radiolabeled-E. coli assay.

Abstract
The effects of co-ingested lipids and emulsifiers on the accumulation of quercetin metabolites in blood plasma after the short-term ingestion of onion by rats were investigated. Plasma extracts of rats that had been fed onion-containing diets for one and two weeks were analyzed by HPLC with electrochemical detection after a treatment with sulfatase/beta-glucuronidase. Almost all of the quercetin metabolites in the plasma were sulfate/glucuronide conjugates of quercetin and isorhamnetin. More than 4.6% (w/w) of soybean oil in the diets significantly enhanced the accumulation of quercetin metabolites in the plasma. Fish oil and beef tallow increased this to an extent similar to that with soybean oil, and lecithin was more effective than the other three lipids. Two emulsifiers, sodium caseinate and sucrose fatty acid ester, also showed an enhancing effect on the accumulation of quercetin metabolites. These results indicate that co-ingested lipids and emulsifiers could enhance the bioavailability of quercetin glucosides in onion.

Abstract
A method was proposed to determine kaempferol and quercetin in Hippophae rhamnoides L medicinal preparation xindakang tablet by β-cyclodextrin modified micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography. Under the optimized conditions: buffer solution of 20 mmol/L Na(2)B(4)O(7)-KH(2)PO(4) (pH 9.0)-20mmol/L SDS-6mmol/L β-CD-5%(v/v) MeCN, applied voltage of 16 kV and injection time of 8s, the two analytes were separated well within 10 minutes. The calibration was linear in the 0.02-0.80 and 0.02-0.70 mg/mL range for kaempferol and quercetin, respectively. The reproducibility based on migration time and peak height were 0.47% and1.87% for kaempferol, 0.55% and 2.02% for quercetin. The detection limits based on three times noise were 0.010 mg/mL and 0.008 mg/mL for kaempferol and quercetin, respectively. The developed method was utilized to analyze real samples and running recovery experiments with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Drynariae rhizoma has been used to prevent bone loss that occurs with increasing age. However, the chemical compounds in extracts that act on bone metabolism in herbal medicine are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate and compare the extraction efficacy of polyphenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and in vitro anti-osteoporosis properties of water extract (DR-DW) and ethanol extract (DR-EtOH) from D. rhizoma. Total phenolics and flavonoids were better extracted with 70% EtOH, and this extraction method also resulted in higher antioxidant activity and in vitro anti-osteoporosis properties in these extracts. In particular, the contents of phloroglucinol, protocatechuic acid ethyl ester, 2-amino-3,4-dimethyl-benzoic acid, 3-(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, trans-ferulic acid, (−)-epigallocatechin, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin dehydrate, luteolin and emodin in DR-EtOH were higher than those in DR-DW. These results indicated that DR-EtOH could be a good source of natural herbs with anti-osteoporosis properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of different culture conditions on the main chemical compositions of Anoectochilus roxburghii, so as to determine the optimum culture conditions and provide theoretical support for large-scale production of Anoectochilus roxburghii. METHODS The light qualities, photoperiods and induction periods were changed to regulate the main chemical compositions of Anoectochilus roxburghii. RESULTS The contents of total flavonoids, quercetin, isorhamnetin and kaempferol in blue light were higher than that in yellow light, the worst was under red light. There was the highest total flavonoids, kaempferol and isorhamnetin content in photoperiod of 14 h/d. After one month inoculation, the total flavonoids, quercetin, isorhamnetin and kaempferol contents were the highest. CONCLUSION The results show that the optimum culture condition is: inducted 15 days with blue light inoculated one month later at the photoperiod of 14 h/d.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study HPLC characteristic fingerprint of Sedum lineare from different harvest periods, and to compare with its related species Sedum sarmentosum. METHODS The HPLC fingerprints of Sedum lineare from different collecting periods were established and compared with Sedum sarmentosum by the same detection method. RESULTS Hyperin, isoquercitrin and astragaloside were identified from the HPLC fingerprint of Sedum lineare. The fingerprint of Sedum lineare growing in the same area but different environment were basically identical; while there were remarkable differences of Sedum lineare growing in the same place but from different harvest periods, with the area of most common peaks changing from little to great, and slightly different peak number. The HPLC fingerprint of the two Sedum species had four common peaks, but could be distinguished from each other. The optimal harvest period of these two species should be full-bloom stage. CONCLUSION The established method can provide reference for identification and quality analysis of Sedum lineare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve the extraction and recovery of bioactive materials from cactus, the present study investigated the effect of polysaccharide-degrading enzymes [Rapidase-Viscozyme mixture, 1/3 (v/v)] treatment under high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). RESULTS The dry weight of the extract increased with the use of increasing pressure regardless of enzyme treatment. However, the polyphenol content showed a tendency to decrease with the increase in pressure in the cactus extract with or without enzyme treatment. The enzyme-assisted extraction resulted in an increase of dry weight and polyphenol content in the cactus extract. The total sugar and reducing sugar contents of the cactus extract increased with increasing pressure in enzyme-assisted extraction. The uronic acid content of the cactus extract showed a pattern similar to that of the reducing sugars. The enzyme-assisted extraction also increased the contents of taxifolin, quercetin and isorhametin. The cactus extract obtained through enzyme-assisted extraction showed intense scavenging activity of both DPPH and ABTS radicals. The crude polysaccharides isolated from the extract (51.2% at 1000 µg mL⁻¹ for HHP extraction at 300 MPa) had higher anti-complementary activity than the others except for lipopolysaccharide (60.00% at 1000 µg mL⁻¹). HHP extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction using HHP showed an increase of anti-complementary activity compared with the heat and enzyme controls, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, the use of HHP in enzyme-assisted extraction resulted in more efficient extraction than the use of enzyme treatment alone.

Abstract
A simple, inexpensive and sensitive kinetic spectrophotometric method was developed for the simultaneous determination of three anti-carcinogenic flavonoids: catechin, quercetin and naringenin, in fruit samples. A yellow chelate product was produced in the presence neocuproine and Cu(I) - a reduction product of the reaction between the flavonoids with Cu(II), and this enabled the quantitative measurements with UV-vis spectrophotometry. The overlapping spectra obtained, were resolved with chemometrics calibration models, and the best performing method was the fast independent component analysis (fast-ICA/PCR (Principal component regression)); the limits of detection were 0.075, 0.057 and 0.063 mg L(-1) for catechin, quercetin and naringenin, respectively. The novel method was found to outperform significantly the common HPLC procedure.

Abstract
The sonochemical effects of ultrasound (US) treatment on 14 flavonoids representing the main flavonoids in citrus fruit were investigated in a standard mixture by stability evaluation of a model system. Degradation products were further tentatively identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography–ultraviolet detection–electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Thirteen flavonoids (i.e., eriocitrin, narirutin, neohesperidin, quercitrin, eridictyol, didymin, naringenin, luteolin, sinensetin, nobiletin, tangeretin, naringin, and hesperidin) were fairly stable whereas quercetin was degraded significantly by US treatment. The types of solvent and temperature used were important factors that determined the resulting degradation reactions. The degradation rate of quercetin was highest in 80% ethanol aqueous solution and decreased with increasing temperature. Longer US durations caused increases in the extent of quercetin degradation. Liquid height, ultrasonic intensity, pulse length, and duty cycle of US affected degradation rates but did not change the nature of degradation of the flavonoids. Four types of reactions occurred simultaneously for quercetin under US treatment: oxidation, addition, polymerization, and decomposition. Eight degradation products were tentatively identified as dimer, alcohol addition, oxidation, and decomposition products.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze and optimize extraction technics of Polygonum orientale flowers by response surface methodology. METHODS With the index for the content of taxifolin in flowers of Polygonum orientale, the effect of three factors such as concentration of alcohol, extraction time and solvent-solid ratio was designed by Box-Behnken central composite. Extraction technic parameters of Polygonum orientale flowers was optimized by response surface methodology. RESULTS The optimizing extraction conditions of Polygonum orientale flowers were as follows: ethanol concentration was 65%, extracting time was 129 min and solvent-solid ratio was 18. Under the conditions, the average yield of taxifolin in 3 validation experiments was 2.79 mg/g. CONCLUSION Optimizing extraction technics by response surface methodology is reasonable, simple, and has good predictability.

Abstract
In this work, a novel solid fluorescence method was proposed and applied to the fast determination of quercetin in urine and onion skin samples by using metal coordination imprinted polymer membrane, which was regarded as a recognition element. The quercetin-Al(III) imprinted polymer was immobilized in the microporous polypropylene fiber membrane via consecutive in situ polymerization. The CIP membrane had the porous, loose and layer upon layer structure. The CIP membrane was characterized by electron microscope photographs, infrared spectra, thermogravimetric analysis and solvent-resistant investigation. The extraction conditions including extraction solvent, extraction time, desorption solvent were optimized. Compared with MIP and NIP membrane, CIP membrane had been proved to be peculiar selective for quercetin even in presence of the structurally similar compounds such as kaempferol, rutin, naringenin and alpinetin. The CIP membrane was characteristic of high selectivity, stable and sensitive response to quercetin in polar environment. Under the optimum condition, there was a linear relationship between the state fluorescent response and the concentration of quercetin. The linear calibration range was over 0.02 mg L(-1)-0.80 mg L(-1) with a detection limit of 5 μg L(-1). The method was characteristic of flexible and good repeatability with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.1%. The proposed method was also successfully applied for the determination of quercetin in urine and onion skin samples without complicated pretreatment. The recoveries were 84.0-112.4% and RSDs varied from 1.5% to 6.8%. The results obtained by the proposed method agreed well with those obtained by HPLC method.

Abstract
Phenolics, particularly from apples, hold great interest because of their antioxidant properties. In the present study, the total antioxidant capacity of different apple extracts obtained by pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), which was compared with the conventional antioxidant assays. To measure the antioxidant capacity of individual antioxidants present in apple extracts, a novel method was developed based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (DAD), electrochemical (ECD), and charged aerosol (CAD) detection. HPLC-DAD-ECD-CAD enabled rapid, qualitative, and quantitative determination of antioxidants in the apple extracts. The main advantage of using CAD was that this detector enabled quantification of a large number of phenolics using only a few standards. The results showed that phenolic acids and flavonols were mainly responsible for the total antioxidant capacity of apple extracts. In addition, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, an unidentified phenolic acid, and a quercetin derivative presented the highest antioxidant capacities.

Abstract
A selective and sensitive polar-reversed phase LC method was validated for simultaneous quantification of the main Achyrocline satureioides flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin, and 3-O-methylquercetin) in skin samples after permeation/retention studies from topical nanoemulsions. The method was linear in a range of 0.25 to 10.0 microg/mL exhibiting a coefficient of determination higher than 0.999 for all flavonoids. No interference of the nanoemulsion excipients or skin components was observed in the retention times of all flavonoids. The R.S.D. values for intra- and inter-day precision experiments were lower than 6.73%. Flavonoids recovery from nanoemulsions and skin matrices was between 90.05 and 109.88%. In a permeation/retention study with porcine ear high amount of 3-O-methylquercetin was found in the skin sample (0.92 +/- 0.22 microg/g) after two hours. The proposed method was suitable to quantify the main flavonoids of A. satureioides in skin permeation/retention studies from topical nanoemulsions.
