Abstract
Effects of long-term climatic stress (heat exposure), short-term hygienic stress [lipopolysaccharide (LPS)], or combined exposure to these stressors on endocrine and oxidative stress parameters of 4 layer lines (B1, WA, WB, and WF) were investigated. The lines were earlier characterized for natural humoral immune competence and survival rate. Eighty hens per line were randomly divided over 2 identical climate chambers and exposed to constant high temperature (32 degrees C) or a control temperature (21 degrees C) for 23 d. Half of the hens housed in each chamber were i.v. injected with LPS at d 1 after the start of the heat stress period. The effect of heat, LPS, or combined exposure on plasma levels of corticosterone, 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T(3)), glucose, uric acid (UA), and TBA reacting substances (TBARS) were investigated. Except for UA, there were no interactions between heat stress and LPS administration. Heat stress enhanced levels of corticosterone, glucose, and TBARS, whereas levels of T(3) and UA were decreased. The T(3) levels, however, were enhanced by LPS administration, whereas levels of UA were decreased. Administration of LPS had no effect on levels of corticosterone and TBARS. Because both stressors caused a reduction in feed intake, it is assumed that changes in most of the plasma levels of the endocrine and oxidative stress parameters are related with the reduction in feed intake. Neither natural humoral immune competence nor survival rate, for which the lines have been characterized, was indicative for the endocrine and oxidative stress responses to different stressors. The present data suggest that hens were able to cope with single or combined heat stress and LPS administration and that heat stress and LPS administration acted like 2 independent stressors. Furthermore, the 4 layer lines differed in response patterns and response levels; line WB was physiologically most sensitive to environmental changes.

The lines were earlier characterized by natural humoral immune competence and survival rate. At 22 wk of age, 80 hens per line were randomly divided over 2 identical climate chambers and exposed to a constant high temperature (32 degrees C) or a control temperature (21 degrees C) for 23 d. Half of the hens housed in each chamber were i.v. injected with LPS at d 1 after the start of the heat stress period. The effect of heat, LPS, or a combined challenge on feed intake, BW, hen-day egg production, egg weight, and egg shell thickness were investigated. Feed intake, BW, hen-day egg production, egg weight, and egg shell thickness were significantly reduced by heat stress. Administration of LPS significantly reduced feed intake, BW (LPS x time interaction), hen-day egg production, and egg weight (LPS x time interaction). Hens were able to recover from LPS administration but did not completely adapt to heat stress. Hens still lost weight, had a lower feed intake and hen-day egg production after 23 d of continuous exposure to heat stress. These data suggest a different nature of short-term LPS exposure versus long-term heat exposure affecting performance parameters of laying hens, and different adaptation mechanisms of hens toward these stressors. Neither natural humoral immune competence nor survival rate, for which the lines had been earlier characterized, were indicative of the response to different stressors. However, significant line x heat interactions were found for feed intake and hen-day egg production, and a line x heat x time interaction for BW, whereas a line x LPS interaction was found for hen-day egg production and a line x LPS x time interaction for BW. The lines had similar response patterns, but differed in response levels, suggesting that some lines were better able to adapt to stressors than others.

Abstract
Receptor-like proteins (RLPs) are cell surface receptors that typically consist of an extracellular leucine-rich repeat domain, a transmembrane domain, and a short cytoplasmatic tail. In several plant species, RLPs have been found to play a role in disease resistance, such as the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Cf and Ve proteins and the apple (Malus domestica) HcrVf2 protein that mediate resistance against the fungal pathogens Cladosporium fulvum, Verticillium spp., and Venturia inaequalis, respectively. In addition, RLPs play a role in plant development; Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) TOO MANY MOUTHS (TMM) regulates stomatal distribution, while Arabidopsis CLAVATA2 (CLV2) and its functional maize (Zea mays) ortholog FASCINATED EAR2 regulate meristem maintenance. In total, 57 RLP genes have been identified in the Arabidopsis genome and a genome-wide collection of T-DNA insertion lines was assembled. This collection was functionally analyzed with respect to plant growth and development and sensitivity to various stress responses, including susceptibility toward pathogens. A number of novel developmental phenotypes were revealed for our CLV2 and TMM insertion mutants. In addition, one AtRLP gene was found to mediate abscisic acid sensitivity and another AtRLP gene was found to influence nonhost resistance toward Pseudomonas syringae pv phaseolicola. This genome-wide collection of Arabidopsis RLP gene T-DNA insertion mutants provides a tool for future investigations into the biological roles of RLPs.

Abstract
During lactation, daily separation of sow and piglets, intermittent suckling (IS), can induce lactational oestrus and ovulation. This study examined effects of IS on subsequent early embryo survival and development. Multiparous Topigs40 sows were separated from their piglets for either 12 consecutive hours per day (IS12, n = 13) or two times for 6 h per day (IS6, n = 10) from day 14 of lactation onwards until 23 days after ovulation. Control sows (C, n = 17) were weaned at day 21 of lactation. Oestrus was shown in all treatments within 5 days after the start of treatment. Sows were inseminated each day of oestrus and slaughtered at D23 after ovulation. Intermittent suckling did not significantly affect pregnancy rates of sows (75% IS12 vs 78% IS6 vs 94% C; p > 0.10). Embryo survival was not significantly affected by IS (IS12: 57%; IS6: 51%; p > 0.10) although it seemed to be lower than in C sows (70%). Some parameters of embryo, placental and uterine development were affected by IS, especially in the IS6 group. IS6 embryos had shorter placentas (17.5 +/- 1.2 cm; p < 0.05) than C (20.3 +/- 1.4 cm) and IS12 sows (20.9 +/- 0.7 cm) were smaller and less developed than C sows (p < 0.05). In conclusion, embryo survival does not seem significantly affected by IS, although numerical differences were great. Embryo development, however, was negatively affected in IS6 sows possibly due to a combination of high milk production, stress and lactational effects on uterine development.

Abstract
This study describes follicle dynamics, endocrine profiles in multiparous sows with lactational oestrus compared with conventionally weaned sows (C). Lactational oestrus was induced by Intermittent Suckling (IS) with separation of sows and piglets for either 12 consecutive hours per day (IS12, n = 14) or twice per day for 6 h per occasion (IS6, n = 13) from day 14 of lactation onwards. Control sows (n = 23) were weaned at day 21 of lactation. Pre-ovulatory follicles (> or =6 mm) were observed in 100% of IS12, 92% of IS6 and 26% of C sows before day 21 of lactation and in the remaining 74% C sows within 7 days after weaning. All sows with pre-ovulatory follicles showed oestrus, but not all sows showed ovulation. Four IS6 sows and one IS12 sow developed cystic follicles of which two IS6 sows partially ovulated. Follicle growth, ovulation rate and time of ovulation were similar. E(2) levels tended to be higher in IS sows (p = 0.06), the pre-ovulatory LH surge tended to be lower in IS12 (5.1 +/- 1.7 ng/ml) than in C sows (8.4 +/- 5.0 ng/ml; p = 0.08) and P(4) levels were lower in IS12 and IS6 than in C sows (at 75 h after ovulation: 8.8 +/- 2.4 ng/ml vs 7.0 +/- 1.4 ng/ml vs 17.1 +/- 4.4 ng/ml; p < 0.01). In conclusion, sows with lactational oestrus induced by IS are similar to weaned sows in the timing of oestrus, early follicle development and ovulation rates, but the pre-ovulatory LH surge and post-ovulatory P(4) increase are lower.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine whether the low post-ovulatory plasma P(4) levels found in intermittently suckled (IS) sows are related to the high feeding level during intermittent lactation. Multiparous sows (n=21) were separated from their piglets for 12h per day starting at day 14 of lactation until 6 days after ovulation. At day 28 of lactation, 9 sows had ovulated (spontaneous) and the remaining 12 sows were treated with PG600 (PG600-induced). At ovulation sows were allocated to either a high (H) feeding level (on average 6.5 kg) or a low (L) feeding level (high feeding level minus 2.5 kg) until 6 days after ovulation. Plasma P(4) levels were not affected by feeding level or type of ovulation (P>0.10), and neither were CL parameters, embryo survival rate and embryo development at day 30 of gestation. In conclusion, low levels of plasma P(4) were found in IS sows with lactational ovulation but these were not affected by feeding level during the first week after ovulation. Further studies are needed to investigate which factors cause the lower plasma P(4) levels in these sows.

The lines were earlier characterized for natural humoral immune competence and survival rate. Eighty hens per line were randomly divided over 2 identical climate chambers and exposed to a constant high temperature (32 degrees C) or a control temperature (21 degrees C) for 23 d. Half of the hens housed in each chamber were i.v. injected with LPS at d 1 after the start of the heat stress period. Within each of the treatment groups, half of the hens were s.c. immunized with human serum albumin (HuSA) at d 2 after the start of the heat stress period to measure specific antibody (Ab) titers to HuSA. The effect of heat, LPS, or a combined challenge on specific Ab titers to HuSA, natural Ab titers to keyhole limpet hemocyanin or HuSA (in hens that were not immunized with HuSA), and activity of the classical and alternative complement pathways were investigated. Heat stress enhanced specific and natural immune responses. Administration of LPS enhanced natural immune responses but decreased specific immune responses. The lack of interaction between heat stress and LPS administration, except for natural Ab titers to HuSA, suggest that these were 2 independent stressors. The lines had a similar response pattern but differed in the response level. Neither natural humoral immune competence nor survival rate, for which the lines had been characterized, was indicative of the specific and natural immune response to different stressors. Lipopolysaccharide and heat stress initiated sequential responses over time, with an earlier effect of short-term LPS exposure (within the first and second week) and a later effect of long-term heat exposure (within the second and third week). These data suggest that LPS and heat stress affect the natural and specific immune competence of laying hens.

Abstract
Embryo development and heat production (HP) were studied in eggs of similar size (60 to 65 g) that were incubated at normal (37.8 degrees C) or high (38.9 degrees C) eggshell temperature (EST) and exposed to low (17%), normal (21%), or high (25%) O(2) concentration from d 9 through 19. High EST initially increased HP, but gradually O(2) became more important for HP than EST. Finally,HP was highest for the combination of high EST with high O(2) and lowest for the combination of high EST with low O(2). High EST decreased hatch time, BW, yolk free BW, and relative heart weight. The EST had no effect on residual yolk weight, chick length, or relative liver weight. Increased O(2) increased yolk free BW and chick length and decreased residual yolk weight at hatch. No interactions between EST and O(2) were observed with regard to embryo development and hatchling characteristics. If embryo development is reflected by HP, it can be concluded that high EST primarily increased embryonic development until the second week of incubation. During the third week of incubation, O(2) had a greater effect in determining embryo development than EST.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate whether bull exposure affects LH profiles in postpartum, anoestrous dairy cows. Eight cows between 10 and 17 days after parturition were used. On Day 1, blood samples were taken at 10 min intervals for 8 h. On Day 2, blood sampling continued at 10 min intervals and after 2 h a bull was introduced behind a fence, and blood sampling continued for another 8 h. Time of resumption of luteal activity was between 25 and more than 80 days after parturition for these animals and was not related (P>0.1) with frequency of LH pulses, amplitude of pulses and basal LH concentration on either Day 1 or Day 2. In 6 of the 8 cows, average and basal LH concentration were greater (P<0.001) during the 8 h of bull presence (0.56 +/- 0.33 and 0.39 +/- 0.26 ng/ml, respectively) compared to the 8 h without a bull (0.50 +/- 0.30 and 0.35 +/- 0.24 ng/ml, respectively). Pulse amplitude did not differ (P=0.85) between Day 2 (0.45 +/- 0.24 ng/ml) or Day 1 (0.45 +/- 0.14 ng/ml). LH pulse frequency was greater (P<0.1) on Day 2 (5.3 pulses/8h) compared to the Day 1 (4.6 pulses/8h). In conclusion, fenceline bull exposure early postpartum seems to have an acute effect on LH-release in anoestrous dairy cows. Whether sustained bull exposure can hasten first ovulation after calving through an effect on LH release in dairy cows is an interesting area of research.

Abstract
The effects of relative humidity (RH) and high ambient temperature (T) on physiological responses and animal performance were studied using 12 groups (10 gilts per group) in pens inside respiration chambers. The microclimate in the chamber was programmed so that T remained constant within a day. Each day, the T was increased by 2 degrees C from low (16 degrees C) to high (32 degrees C). Relative humidity was kept constant at 50, 65, or 80%. The pigs' average initial BW was 61.7 kg (58.0 to 65.5 kg), and their average ending BW was 70.2 kg (65.9 to 74.7 kg). Respiration rate (RR), evaporative water (EW), rectal temperature (RT), skin temperature (ST), voluntary feed intake (VFI), water-to-feed ratio (rW:F), heat production (HP), and ADG were analyzed. The animals had free access to feed and water. We determined the T above which certain animal variables started to change: the so-called inflection point temperature (IPt) or "upper critical temperature." The first indicator of reaction, RR, was in the range from 21.3 to 23.4 degrees C. Rectal temperature was a delayed indicator of heat stress tolerance, with IPt values ranging from 24.6 to 27.1 degrees C. For both these indicators the IPt was least at 80% RH (P < 0.05). Heat production and VFI were decreased above IPt of 22.9 and 25.5 degrees C, respectively (P < 0.001). For each degree Celsius above IPt, the VFI was decreased by 81, 99, and 106 g/(pig.d) in treatments 50, 65, and 80% RH, respectively. The ADG was greatest at 50% RH (P < 0.05). Ambient temperature strongly affects the pigs' physiological changes and performance, whereas RH has a relatively minor effect on heat stress in growing pigs; however, the combination of high T and high RH lowered the ADG in pigs. The upper critical temperature can be considered to be the IPt above which VFI decreased and RT then increased. Temperatures of the magnitude of both these IPt are regularly measured in commercial pig houses. We conclude that the upper critical temperatures for 60-kg, group-housed pigs fed ad libitum are between 21.3 and 22.4 degrees C for RR, between 22.9 and 25.5 degrees C for HP and VFI, and between 24.6 and 27.1 degrees C for RT. It is clear that different physiological and productive measurements of group-housed, growing-finishing pigs have different critical temperatures.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare how different feeding levels affect the ovarian potential of follicular development and oocyte maturation in response to superovulatory treatment in native Mangalica (M, n = 17) compared with Landrace (L, n = 20) pigs. Gilts of both breeds were fed high-energy (HI-2.5 kg) or low-energy (LO - 1.25 kg) feed during oestrus synchronization (15 days of Regumate feeding) till the time of oocyte aspiration (Day 6 after Regumate). Follicular growth was stimulated by the administration of 1000 IU equiue choriou gonadotropiu (eCG) 24 h after Regumate treatment, and ovulation was induced by injection of 750 IU human choriou gonadotropiu (hCG) 80 h after eCG administration. Ultrasound (US) investigation was done three times (4-10 h before, and 40-44 and 72-74 h after eCG administration) for the observation of follicular development. Oocyte and follicular fluid (FF) were collected endoscopically 34 h after hCG injection. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were evaluated, their morphology determined, and thereafter fixed and stained for chromatin evaluation. Oocytes were classified as meiosis-resumed (germinal vesicle breakdown, diakinesis, metaphase I to anaphase I) or matured (telophase I and metaphase II). FF concentrations of oestradiol and progesterone were measured by validated radioimmunoassays. In L gilts, differences were observed between HI and LO in the number of preovulatory follicles (32.3 +/- 10.5 vs 17.1 +/- 12.3, p < 0.05), but not in M (25.3 +/- 2.9 vs 28.8 +/- 7.3, p > 0.05). Initial follicular growth was not affected by feeding levels; however, preovulatory follicle size was larger in M (7.1 +/- 0.9 and 6.9 +/- 1.1 mm vs 5.7 +/- 0.7 and 5.5 +/- 0.8 mm; p < 0.05). No differences were obtained with relation to mature chromatin configuration in both breeds (L gilts: HI - 70% and LO-67% vs M gilts: HI - 67% and LO - 63%). A twofold higher oestradiol concentration was detected in FF of HI-M and LO-M (29.6 +/- 6.8 and 30.9 +/- 10.3 ng/ml respectively) compared with that of L (16.9 +/- 9.7 and 17.9 +/- 3.6 ng/ml, respectively; p < 0.05). The mean FF progesterone level was nearly fivefold higher in M (2020.4 +/- 1056 and 1512.2 +/- 1121.8 ng/ml) compared with L (386.2 +/- 113.7 and 298.8 +/- 125.9 ng/ml, p < 0.05). The results indicate an influence of the feeding of altered energy on the number of recruitable preovulatory follicles in modern Landrace but not in native Mangalica breed. Moreover, the follicular steroid hormone milieu differs between Landrace and Mangalica gilts but not depending on feeding levels. Oocyte maturation was not affected by diet.

Abstract
Increasing the availability of glucogenic nutrients relative to lipogenic nutrients has been hypothesized to decrease the production of milk fat, to improve the energy balance (EB), and to decrease the incidence and severity of metabolic and reproductive disorders in dairy cows in early lactation. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the effects of a glucogenic, lipogenic, or mixed diet on EB, plasma metabolites and metabolic hormones, liver triacylglycerides (TAG), and reproductive variables in high-producing dairy cows in early lactation. Cows (n = 114) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 diets and were fed either a mainly lipogenic diet, a mainly glucogenic diet, or a mixture of both diets (50:50 dry matter basis) from wk 3 before the expected calving date until 9 wk postpartum. Diets were isocaloric (net energy basis) and equal in intestinal digestible protein. Dry matter intake, net energy intake, milk yield, and milk protein percentage did not differ among diets. Milk lactose percentage was less for cows fed the lipogenic diet. Milk fat percentage was less for multiparous cows fed the glucogenic diet compared with cows fed the mixed or lipogenic diet (3.69 vs. 4.02 vs. 4.22 +/- 0.07%, respectively). The calculated EB was less negative for multiparous cows fed the glucogenic diet compared with cows fed the mixed or lipogenic diet [-33 vs. -125 vs. -89 +/- 21 kJ/(kg(0.75) x d), respectively]. Postpartum, the glucogenic diet decreased plasma nonesterified fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and liver TAG concentrations and increased insulin concentration in multiparous cows. The glucogenic diet tended to decrease the number of days until first milk progesterone rise in multiparous cows compared with the mixed or lipogenic diet (20.4 vs. 24.4 vs. 26.4 +/- 2.1 d, respectively). Diet had no effect on any of the above-mentioned variables in primiparous cows, except that milk lactose percentage was greater for primiparous cows fed the glucogenic diet. We concluded that the glucogenic diet was effective in improving the calculated EB and decreasing plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate and liver TAG concentrations, suggesting a reduced risk of metabolic disorders in multiparous dairy cows fed a glucogenic diet.

Abstract
The relation between survival and levels of humoral components of innate (and specific) immune competence of laying hens was investigated in a population of 1,063 laying hens from 12 purebred layer lines. Natural immune competence of the chickens was studied by measuring levels of natural antibodies (NAb) binding to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), respectively, and hemolytic (classical and alternative) complement activity at 20, 40, and 65 wk of age. In addition, levels of antibodies binding a Newcastle disease vaccine strain as a measure of specific immunity were investigated at 20 wk of age. A distinction could be made between lines showing high or low immune competence with respect to NAb, complement activity, and specific antibodies. Within lines, significant correlations were found for each of the innate parameters among the 3 ages. The innate and specific parameters were, however, not correlated with each other. Based on the limited data set, it was not possible to draw conclusions on line differences for innate or specific immune competence in relation to survival. However, regardless of line, low levels of NAb binding to KLH or high levels of NAb binding to LPS were detected in chickens that did not survive the laying period. The major difference between the responses of NAb binding to KLH or LPS was that the chickens probably did not encounter KLH, which suggests a reflection of the capacity to respond, whereas the chickens most probably did encounter LPS, which suggests a reflection of the active status of the innate humoral immune system. In conclusion, we propose that levels (KLH) and activation (LPS) of components of natural antibodies are indicative for the probability that chickens survive a laying period.

Abstract
Synchronization of the oestrous cycle of gilts using altrenogest treatment has been found to increase ovulation rate. The current experiment investigated if the increase in ovulation rate after altrenogest treatment is related to increased follicle size at the end of altrenogest treatment compared with late luteal phase follicles. Crossbred gilts (n = 15) received altrenogest during 18 days [20 mg Regumate (Janssen Animal Health, Beerse, Belgium)], starting 5-7 days after onset of first oestrus. Control gilts (n = 15) did not receive altrenogest. At days 10-12 of the oestrous cycle [i.e. in the presence of corpora lutea (CL)], average follicle development was 2.51 +/- 0.20 mm (assessed with ultrasound) in altrenogest-treated gilts and 2.58 +/- 0.16 mm in control gilts (p > 0.10). During the last days of altrenogest treatment (i.e. when CL had gone into regression), average follicle size had increased to 3.01 +/- 0.31 mm (p < 0.05). Subsequent ovulation rate was 16.6 +/- 1.7 in altrenogest treated gilts and 15.1 +/- 1.2 in control gilts (p < 0.05). Altrenogest treatment resulted in increased follicle size after regression of the CL, showing that suppression of follicle growth by altrenogest alone is less severe than suppression by endogenous progesterone (either with or without altrenogest). Altrenogest treatment also resulted in a higher ovulation rate. However, it is unclear if the increased follicle size and higher ovulation rate after altrenogest treatment are causally related, as the relation between the two on an animal level was not significant.

Abstract
This paper summarizes three recent studies by the same authors with the objective to study the effect of dietary energy source on the energy balance (EB) and risk for metabolic and reproductive disorders in dairy cows in early lactation. The first study, a literature survey, illustrated that feeding extra glucogenic nutrients relative to lipogenic nutrients, decreased milk fat and seems to decrease plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentration. However studies are scarce and mostly confound the effect of energy source with level of energy intake, compromising eventual effects on EB and fertility. Therefore, in the second study, 16 dairy cows were either fed a glucogenic or a lipogenic diet (isocaloric) and EB was determined in climate-controlled respiration chambers from week 2 until 9 of lactation. Glucogenic diet decreased milk fat yield and milk energy and tended to decrease body fat mobilization compared with lipogenic diet. The objective of the third study was to study the effect of dietary energy source on EB, metabolites and reproduction variables. Dairy cows (n=111) were fed glucogenic, lipogenic or mixed diet from week 3 until week 9 relative to calving. Multiparous cows fed glucogenic diet had lower milk fat yield, higher calculated EB, and lower plasma NEFA, BHBA and liver triacylglyceride concentration and tended to have fewer days to first postpartum ovulation. In conclusion, increasing the glucogenic nutrient availability improved the EB and had potential to reduce the risk for metabolic disorders and to improve reproductive performance in dairy cows.

Abstract
In pig husbandry, stress is being considered an important cause of impaired reproductive performance. Therefore, an experiment was performed to quantify effects of repeated stressors during the follicular phase and/or during early pregnancy on reproductive performance of gilts. Eighty-one cyclic gilts were assigned to one of four treatments, namely, stress treatment during the follicular phase (n = 20), stress treatment during early pregnancy (n = 20), stress treatment during both phases (n = 21) and no stress treatment (n = 20). All gilts were housed individually, but gilts in the stress treatments had no opportunity for visual or physical contact with other gilts. Further, animals in a stress-treatment were grouped for half an hour at the start of the treatment and during the treatment period nose-sling and an unpredictable feeding scheme were applied regularly. The extent of stress was monitored using heart rate measurements, behavioural observations and saliva cortisol levels during nose-sling fixation. Of the 81 gilts, 93% showed oestrus and were inseminated. Of these, 93% were pregnant at day 35, having 17.9 +/- 0.3 ovulations and 15.6 +/- 0.3 foetuses. These parameters were not affected by treatment. The stress treatment during the follicular phase tended to shorten cycle length (stress: 20.8 +/- 0.20; control: 21.2 +/- 0.17 days, p = 0.07) and weight of foetuses at day 35 (stress: 4.47 +/- 0.08 g; no stress: 4.69 +/- 0.08 g, p = 0.06); stress during early pregnancy did not affect any of the reproduction parameters. Percentage stereotypic behaviour, heart rate and saliva cortisol levels varied greatly between animals and between days, but did not differ between the treatments. No relationships were found between any of the reproductive parameters and any of the stress parameters (heart rate, cortisol, stereotypic behaviour). These results indicate that the repeatedly applied acute stressors did not generate a chronic stress-response and that these stressors during the follicular phase and/or during early pregnancy did not affect reproductive processes. It is not clear how these findings relate to suggested effects of stress(ors) on reproductive performance in pig husbandry.

Abstract
This paper presents LH, estradiol, and cortisol in 12 sows that were separated from their piglets for 12h a day, beginning around 2w of lactation, until weaning (intermittent suckling, IS). To separate sows from their piglets, the sows either were moved to a different unit (total separation), or were only inhibited from suckling their piglets by a physical barrier (physical separation). Blood samples were frequently collected during 4.5 consecutive days. At the start of IS, four sows showed advanced follicle growth. In the eight remaining sows, total separation resulted in 4/4 sows ovulating, while physical separation resulted in 2/4 sows ovulating. Total and physical separation resulted in different LH secretion patterns. Total separation resulted in a lower amplitude of LH pulses than physical separation throughout the period of sampling (0.26 versus 0.53ng/ml; P<0.01), and seemed to result in an escape from inhibition of LH secretion during suckling. Similarly, sows that ovulated had a lower amplitude of LH pulses (0.30 versus 0.54ng/ml; P<0.05), and also showed a different effect of suckling on LH secretion than anovulatory sows. Total separation, in contrast to physical separation, consistently resulted in increased cortisol after separation (P<0.05). This contrast was not observed between ovulating and non-ovulating sows. We therefore conclude that IS results in an increased LH secretion. Inhibition of all contact between sows and piglets seems to result in a more sustained increase in LH secretion, which increases the chance of ovulation.
