Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNT) were synthesized on nanopatterned catalysts. The catalyst nanoparticles were obtained using dip pen nanolithographytechnique. Dip pen nanolithography technique was used to deposit NiCl(2) nanopatterns with sub-200 nm feature sizes on a silicon substrate. The deposited features were verified by using lateral force microscopy. The substrate was then placed in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition instrument to synthesize CNT. The synthesized CNT were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) prevalence using population-based administrative data, and to estimate the error associated with case ascertainment approaches when using these databases. METHODS Cases were ascertained using physician billing and hospitalization data from the province of Manitoba (population 1.1 million). Focusing on the population age >/=45 years, we compared 3 different case definition algorithms and also used statistical methods that accounted for imperfect case ascertainment to estimate the prevalence and the properties of the ascertainment algorithms. A hierarchical Bayesian latent class regression model was developed that also allowed us to assess differences across patient demographics (sex and region of residence). RESULTS Using methods that account for the imperfect nature of both billing and hospitalization databases, we estimated the prevalence of PMR in women age >/=45 years to be lower in urban areas (754.5 cases/100,000; 95% credible interval [95% CrI] 674.1-850.3) compared with rural areas (1,004 cases/100,000; 95% CrI 886.3-1,143). This regional trend was also seen in men age >/=45 years, where the prevalence was estimated at 273.6 cases/100,000 (95% CrI 219.8-347.6) in urban areas and 380.7 cases/100,000 (95% CrI 311.3-468.1) in rural areas. Billing data appeared more sensitive in ascertaining cases than hospitalization data, and a large proportion of diagnoses was made by physicians other than rheumatologists. CONCLUSION These data suggest a higher prevalence of PMR in rural versus urban regions. Our approach demonstrates the usefulness of methods that adjust for the imperfect nature of multiple information sources, which also allow for estimation of the sensitivity of different case ascertainment approaches.

Abstract
Three medicinal plants Ocimum sanctum, Ocimum bacilicum and Leucas aspera were screened to study endophytic diversity of the plants. Altogether 103 fungal endophytes belonging to fourteen genera were isolated. Leaves of all three medicinal plants were colonized by a great number of endophytic fungi. Leaves of O. sanctum were colonized by the most, that is, eleven endophytes. Highest Shannon-Wiener index (2.256) was exhibited by O. sanctum with the highest Simpson's diversity (0.8654) indicating great species specificity. O. bacilicum and L. aspera showed the highest similarity coefficient. Some fungal genera have been showed to be host specific. In the present study Curvularia sp., Hymenula sp., Tricoderma sp. and Tubercularia sp. exclusively colonized O. sanctum ; whereas Alternaria sp. and Spicaria sp. colonized only L. aspera .

Abstract
Using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), we measure the rotational mobility of probe molecules highly diluted in deeply supercooled bulk water and negligibly constrained by the possible ice fraction. The mobility increases above the putative glass transition temperature of water, T(g) = 136 K, and smoothly connects to the thermodynamically stable region by traversing the so called "no man's land" (the range 150-235 K), where it is believed that the homogeneous nucleation of ice suppresses the liquid water. Two coexisting fractions of the probe molecules are evidenced. The 2 fractions exhibit different mobility and fragility; the slower one is thermally activated (low fragility) and is larger at low temperatures below a fragile-to-strong dynamic cross-over at approximately 225 K. The reorientation of the probe molecules decouples from the viscosity below approximately 225 K. The translational diffusion of water exhibits a corresponding decoupling at the same temperature [Chen S-H, et al. (2006) The violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled water. The present findings are consistent with key issues concerning both the statics and the dynamics of supercooled water, namely the large structural fluctuations [Poole PH, Sciortino F, Essmann U, Stanley HE (1992) Phase behavior of metastable water. Abstract
The major objective of the investigation was to evaluate the road traffic noise and its likely impacts on the local community of Asansol city (West Bengal, India) by monitoring and modeling. The attitudinal response of local population due to existing vehicular noise is presented in the paper. Noise and Attitudinal Survey was conducted at 25 locations. A total of 869 individuals were surveyed. The relationship between traffic noise levels and annoyance was studied using correlation, linear and multiple linear regressions analysis. The average L(dn) value was 73.28 +/- 8.51 dB(A) (55.1-87.3); The Traffic Noise Index (TNI) was 80.62 +/- 15.88 dB(A) (49.4-115.8). The mean value of percent of population Highly Annoyed (%HA) due to road traffic noise was 26.50 +/- 3.37 (19.44-33.2), whereas the mean dissatisfaction score (MDS) was 2.96 +/- 0.90 (1.04-4.45). Annoyance modeling was also performed based on field data. It can be said that Noise values gives desirable annoyance predicting values in comparison to vehicular data.

Abstract
The objectives of the study were to monitor and assess the road traffic noise in its spatial-temporal aspect in an urban area. The paper discusses the observations, results and their interpretation based on the study. Noise recordings from site, collected from April 2006 to March 2006, were used for statistical analysis and generation of various noise indices. Noise maps were also created for impact analysis and formulation of Noise Risk Zones. Mean Ldn value ranged between 55.1 and 87.3 dB (A). Day time Leq level ranged between 51.2 and 89.0 dB (A), where it ranged between 43.5 and 81.9 dB (A) during night. The study reveals that present noise level in all the locations exceeds the limit prescribed by CPCB. Based on the finding it can be said that the population in this industrial town are exposed to significantly high noise level, which is caused mostly due to road traffic.

Abstract
The effect of mixed cyclodextrin-surfactant systems on the ground and excited state proton transfer reactions of 4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol (MFOH) in aqueous solution has been investigated by steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been found that micellar media perturbs the solvation of MFOH and facilitates nanocaging. In the presence of micelle, MFOH preferentially resides in the interfacial region. Depending on the local pH due to compartmentalization of reaction media, normal or anionic form of MFOH dominates. Encapsulation of the probe within the cyclodextrin nanocavity enhances the shorter lifetime component of MFOH unexpectedly, which has been explained on the basis of reduced solvation and reduced dipolar effect due to confinement.

Abstract
The role of the ariginine-metabolism in the healing action of the methanol extract of Myristica malabarica (rampatri) (RM) and omeprazole (Omez) against indomethacin-induced stomach ulceration in mouse was investigated. Indomethacin (18 mg/kg) was found to induce maximum stomach ulceration in Swiss albino mice on the 3rd day of its administration, which was associated with reduced arginase activity (38.5%, p < 0.05), eNOS expression, along with increased iNOS expression, total NOS activity (5.37 fold, p < 0.001), NO generation (55.1%, p < 0.01), and ratio of pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Besides providing comparable healing as Omez (3 mg/kg × 3 d), RM (40 mg/kg × 3 d, p.o.) shifted the iNOS/NO axis to the arginase/polyamine axis as revealed from the increased arginase activity (59.5%, p < 0.01), eNOS expression, and reduced iNOS expression, total NOS activity (73%, p < 0.001), and NO level (49.8%, p < 0.01). These could be attributed to a favourable anti/pro inflammatory cytokines ratio, generated by RM. The healing by Omez was however, not significantly associated with those parameters.

Abstract
We explore the application of terahertz spectroscopic techniques for the remote determination of the water content of paper. The aim is the development of a rapid diagnostic imaging tool applicable in paper fabrication processes. THz radiation offers a high sensitivity for water, a good spatial resolution, and insensitivity to scattering at the paper surface. The advent of THz cameras makes fast large-area image detectors feasible. In this paper, we show for the case of a 0.6-THz fixed-frequency system, that the water content of paper can be determined with high accuracy. We demonstrate a quantitative (calibrated) method for determining the moisture content in paper based on extinction and phase measurements in the lower THz range with a spatial resolution in the mm-range and scanning times below two minutes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early identification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) can help delay or prevent its progression, but the opportunities for systematic screening of patients are not well defined. AIM To define the prevalence of CKD Stages 3-5 and related anaemia among acute medical admissions. DESIGN Retrospective analysis. METHODS We studied all acute medical admissions to a major London teaching hospital during one year. The lowest creatinine, highest haemoglobin (Hb) and average mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were determined for 3 months before and after admission. Patients were categorized as CKD Stages 3-5 if the highest estimated GFR (eGFR) was <60 ml/min/1.73 m2. CKD-related anaemia was diagnosed if these patients had Hb <11 g/dl with normal MCV. RESULTS A total of 6073 patients were studied: male 49.0%, age 65.4 +/- 19.6 years (mean +/- SD), creatinine 82.7 +/- 46.7 micromol/l, eGFR 89.1 +/- 32.5 ml/min/1.73 m2, Hb 13.6 +/- 1.73 g/dl, MCV 87.7 +/- 7.2 fl. There was an inverse correlation between eGFR and age (r2 = 0.5; P < 0.001). Males were younger than females (63.5 +/- 18.4 years vs. 67.3 +/- 20.5) and had higher eGFR (93.6 +/- 34.1 vs. 84.7 +/- 30.2 ml/min/1.73 m2; P < 0.001). A total of 743 patients (12.2%) had raised creatinine >110 micromol/l, however using eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2, 1075 patients (17.7%) were identified. The patients were categorized as follows: Stage 3: 950 (15.6%), Stage 4: 100 (1.7%), Stage 5: 25 (0.4%). Ninety-nine (9.2%) of the 1075 patients had normocytic anaemia. CONCLUSION We have found a high prevalence of CKD Stages 3-5 (17.7%) among acute medical admissions, of whom 9.2% had a related anaemia. Our findings highlight an important opportunity (amongst the 1.9 million acute medical admissions annually in England) for detecting patients with CKD.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The role of the insulin like growth factor (IGF) system in various human malignancies has been well established. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of mRNA expression of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP)-1, -3 and -7 genes in benign and malignant breast tissue and explore their relationship with various prognostic parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Breast cancer tissue (n=127) and normal background tissue (n-33) were prospectively collected and analysed for levels of IGFBP-1, -3 and -7 mRNA using real-time Q-PCR. mRNA levels were then analysed against tumour grade, nodal status, Nottingham prognostic index (NPI)/TNM stage and tumour type. RESULTS For IGFBP-1 and -3, mRNA expression was higher in normal tissue. This was significant for IGFBP-1 when comparing NPI 3 with NPI 1 (p=0.050) and the normal group (p=0.040). With respect to TNM analysis, there was less IGFBP-1 mRNA when comparing TNM 3 with normal (p=0.017), TNM 1 (p=0.047) and TNM 2 (p=0.019) tumours. This was also found when comparing TNM 4 samples with normal tissue (p=0.017), TNM 1 (p=0.046) and TNM 2 (p=0.019). For IGFBP-3 mRNA, there was less mRNA when comparing TNM 3 with TNM 1 (p= 0.017) and TNM 2 (p=0.050), and also less mRNA expression when comparing TNM 4 with TNM 1 (p=0.030). For IGFBP-7 mRNA, both TNM 1 (p=0.0077) and TNM 2 (p=0.015) had significantly more expression than TNM 3 samples. CONCLUSION This study supports the role of IGFBP-1, -3 and -7 as potential tumour suppressor genes in human breast cancer.

Abstract
Aplidin (plitidepsin) is a novel marine-derived antitumor agent presently undergoing phase II clinical trials in hematological malignancies and solid tumors. Lack of bone marrow toxicity has encouraged further development of this drug for treatment of leukemia and lymphoma. Multiple signaling pathways have been shown to be involved in Aplidin-induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in G1 and G2 phase. However, the exact mechanism(s) of Aplidin action remains to be elucidated. Here we demonstrate that mitochondria-associated or -localized processes are the potential cellular targets of Aplidin. Whole genome gene-expression profiling (GEP) revealed that fatty acid metabolism, sterol biosynthesis and energy metabolism, including the tricarboxylic acid cycle and ATP synthesis are affected by Aplidin treatment. Moreover, mutant MOLT-4, human leukemia cells lacking functional mitochondria, were found to be resistant to Aplidin. Cytosine arabinoside (araC), which also generates oxidative stress but does not affect the ATP pool, showed synergism with Aplidin in our leukemia and lymphoma models in vitro and in vivo. These studies provide new insights into the mechanism of action of Aplidin. The efficacy of the combination of Aplidin and araC is currently being evaluated in clinical phase I/II program for the treatment of patients with relapsed leukemia and high-grade lymphoma.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the protective activity of allylpyrocatechol (APC), the major antioxidant constituent of Piper betel, against the indomethacin-induced stomach ulceration in the rat model and correlates with its antioxidative and mucin protecting properties.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups. Normal control rats (group I) were given the vehicle oral dose of gum acacia in distilled water (1 mL per rat); ulcerated control and treated rats (groups II-V) were given a single dose of indomethacin (30 mg/kg body wt.); group II rats were sacrificed 4 h after indomethacin administration; groups III-V rats were given the vehicle (1 mL per rat) or APC (2 mg/kg body wt.) or misoprostol (1.43 μg/kg body wt.) once daily by oral intubation for 7 d starting from 4 h after the indomethacin administration. After 7 d, the stomach tissues were excised for histological examination and biochemical analysis.
RESULTS: Treatment with APC (2 mg/kg body wt per day) and misoprostol (1.43 μg/kg body wt per day) for 7 d could effectively heal the stomach ulceration as revealed from the ulcer index and histopathological studies. Compared to the zero day ulcerated group, treatment with APC and misoprostol reduced the ulcer index by 93.4% and 85.4% respectively (P < 0.05). Both APC and misoprostol accelerated ulcer healing observed in natural recovery (P < 0.05), their respective healing capacities not being significantly different. The healing capacities of APC and misoprostol could be attributed to their antioxidant activity as well as the ability to enhance the mucin content of the gastric tissues. Compared to the ulcerated untreated rats, those treated with APC and misoprostol showed near normal MDA levels, while the protein levels were 86% and 78% of the normal value respectively (P < 0.05). Likewise, both APC and misoprostol increased the SOD, catalase, and mucin levels significantly (P < 0.05), the effect of APC being better.
CONCLUSION: APC can protect indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration due to its antioxidative and mucin protecting properties.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a disease state characterized by the presence of airflow obstruction due to chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. The airflow obstruction is generally progressive. In the past asthma was often confused with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but as the cellular inflammatory mechanisms are quite different to chronic bronchitis and emphysema it is prudent to separate this condition of airway hyper-responsiveness. Exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a considerable burden on health service resources in terms of morbidity and mortality. Approximately one half of exacerbations can be attributed to bacterial pathogens, the major pathogens being Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pnemoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Resistance to common first-line treatment antibiotics such as the beta-lactams can be variable. Newer fluoroquinolones such as grepafloxacin, levofloxacin, sparfloxacin, clinafloxacin, moxifloxacin, gatifloxacin and gemifloxacin are characterized by improved activity against Gram positive bacteria as well as their Gram negative properties. However, more randomized controlled trials need to be accomplished before the true role of quinolones in exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is clearly ascertained.

Abstract
Tannase an industrially important enzyme was produced by Aspergillus aculeatus DBF9 through a solid-state fermentation (SSF). The organism produced good amount of enzyme and gallic acid in wheat bran among the solid substrate used in SSF. Maximum enzyme and gallic acid production occurred in 5% tannic acid after 72 h. Eighty percent initial substrate moisture and 30 degrees C temperature was found suitable for tannase production.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an important tool that identifies populations at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes, targeting them for preventive measures. The criteria for the identification of the MetS were initially constructed from data in Caucasian populations. Recent research suggests that the current criteria for the MetS may not accurately characterize disease risk in non-Caucasian populations, either over or underestimating the risk in certain ethnic groups. Altering the criteria for each population by making ethnic-specific cutoffs as has been done with waist circumference will help in more accurate characterization. Using different combinations of the MetS criteria for different ethnic groups based CVD risk and factor analysis needs consideration. With better characterizations of patient populations, the ultimate goal would be to make MetS more accurate for predicting CVD risk while retaining the ease of screening afforded by the MetS. The proposed alterations of definition and criteria of the MetS would ensure its continued viability and sustainability.

Abstract
Deciphering the BCR-ABL-independent signaling exploited in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) progression is an important aspect in cancer stem-cell biology. CML stem-cell compartment is dynamic as it progresses to terminal blast crisis where myeloid and lymphoid blasts fail to differentiate. We demonstrate cross-regulation of signaling network involving Sonic hedgehog (Shh), Wnt, Notch and Hox for the inexorable blastic transformation of CD34(+) CML cells. Significant upregulation in Patched1, Frizzled2, Lef1, CyclinD1, p21 (P < or =0.0002) and downregulation of HoxA10 and HoxB4 (P< or =0.0001) transcripts in CD34(+) cells distinguish blast crisis from chronic CML. We report Shh-dependent Stat3 activation orchestrates these mutually interconnected signaling pathways. Stimulation of CD34(+) CML cells with either soluble Shh or Wnt3a did not activate Akt or p44/42-mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. Interestingly, unlike dominant negative Stat3beta, introduction of constitutive active Stat3 in CD34(+) CML cells induces cross-regulation in gene expression. Additionally, Shh and Wnt3a-dependent regulation of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKI) in CML suggests their role in the network. Taken together, our findings propose that deregulation in the form of hyperactive Shh and Wnt with repressed Notch and Hox pathways involving Stat3, Gli3, beta-catenin, CyclinD1, Hes1, HoxA10 and p21 might act synergistically to form an important hub in CML progression.

Abstract
Stickler Syndrome is an infrequent autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder. The most prevalent mutation affects type II collagen gene and results in abnormalities in cartilage, vitreous and nucleus pulposus. Orthopaedic manifestations include joint hyper- mobility and pain with early development of secondary osteoarthritis. The condition has a predilection for the femoral head and patients usually present in their third to fourth decade with secondary hip arthritis. We report on two siblings with Stickler Syndrome who presented with hip osteoarthritis in their third decade of life and underwent staged bilateral total hip arthroplasties (THA). The patients experienced pain relief and improved quality of life after surgery.
