Abstract
Air-grown cells of a marine, small-celled (2 μm diameter) strain of Stichococcus bacillaris contained appreciable carbonic-anhydrase activity but this was repressed when cells were grown on air enriched with 5% (v/v) CO2. Assay of carbonic-anhydrase activity using intact cells and cell extracts showed all activity was intracellular in this Stichococcus strain. Measurement of inorganic-carbon-dependent photosynthetic O2 evolution at pH 5.0, where CO2 is the predominant form of inorganic carbon, showed that the concentration of inorganic carbon required for half-maximal rate of photosynthetic O2 evolution [K0.5(CO2)] was 4.0 μM for both air- and CO2-grown cells. At pH 8.3 the K0.5(CO2) was 0.3 mM for air-grown and 0.6 mM for CO2-grown cells. Sodium ions did not enhance bicarbonate utilization. Measurement of the internal inorganic-carbon pool (HCO 3 (-) +CO2) by the silicone-oil-layer centrifugal filtering technique showed that air- and CO2-grown cells were able to concentrate inorganic carbon up to 20-fold in relation to the external medium at pH 5.0 but not at pH 8.3. In this alga the high affinity for CO2 and inorganic-carbon accumulation in CO2- and air-grown cells results from active CO2 transport that is not dependent on carbonic-anhydrase activity.

Abstract
Microvessels have been isolated from goat cerebral cortex and caudate nucleus. The purity of the preparations was assessed by light microscopy and by the high enrichment in the marker enzymes alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltransferase. Choline acetyltransferase activity was detected in the vascular fractions, being significantly higher in capillaries than in larger vessels. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-containing fibers were visualized in vessels of different caliber. Vessels with diameters larger than 70-90 microns showed a network pattern of fibers similar to that of pial arteries. In small vessels (10-70 microns) longitudinal or helical fibers were observed with occasional side-branches that surround the vessel. No AChE staining was visualized in isolated capillaries under light microscopy. This study shows that isolated intracerebral microvessels are suitable preparations for histochemical studies of perivascular nerves. Taken together, the biochemical and histological results are in accordance with a cholinergic innervation of the goat intracerebral vasculature.

Abstract
To evaluate the effectiveness of immune serum globulin (ISG) in preventing non-A, non-B hepatitis, 291 heart surgery patients who received blood from voluntary donors were randomly assigned to receive either ISG or no additional protection. ISG was given intramuscularly before and 1 week after transfusion. 98 controls and 100 in the ISG group completed the study. Post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis developed in 11 (11.2%) controls but in only 3 (3.0%) of the ISG group (p = 0.0203). 8 (72.7%) of control group with hepatitis had symptoms, and in 5 (45.4%) the disease became chronic. The disease was self-limiting in all 3 ISG patients affected, and only 1 of them had symptoms. Among those with non-A, non-B hepatitis aminotransferase levels were higher in the controls than in the ISG patients. Incubation periods longer than 8 weeks correlated with a tendency for the disease to become chronic. ISG recipients had shorter as well as more homogeneous incubation periods. ISG could be a safe, low-cost means for preventing post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis which does not call for the discarding of donated blood.

Abstract
Renal failure patients have been found to have a special susceptibility to Mycobacterium infections. In patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, Mycobacterium chelonei peritonitis, due to penetration through the peritoneal catheter lumen, has been described. In our report, we described a case of disseminated M chelonei infection that began in a Thomas hemodialysis prosthesis and finally resulted in peritonitis of hematogenous origin. The diagnostic and therapeutic peculiarities are discussed.

Abstract
Fifty-seven patients with T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, 57 patients with T2-3 and 10 patients with T4 were treated by radical irradiation +/- salvage cystectomy. Thirty-five patients with T1 were treated by transurethral resection (TUR) plus local chemotherapy +/- salvage cystectomy. Eleven patients with T2-3 were treated with 5 X 4 Gy in one week followed by cystectomy while four patients with T2-3 were treated with 40 Gy in 4 weeks also followed by cystectomy. Five patients with T4 were treated with 40 Gy in 4 weeks plus cystectomy. Seven year survival rates are: 69% for T1 treated by radical irradiation, 43% for T1 treated by TUR (p less than 0.02), 36% for T2-3 treated either by radical irradiation or 5 X 4 Gy plus cystectomy, and 18% for T4 treated by radical irradiation. All the survival rates indicated are free of disease and include the cases in which salvage cystectomy was successfully performed. Sixty per cent of the cured patients conserved very good functional bladders. We believe that external beam irradiation plus salvage cystectomy is indicated in the treatment of T1 and T2-3 tumours of the bladder.

Abstract
A double-blind randomized, clinical trial was conducted in 43 patients to evaluate the efficacy of sublingual nifedipine in the treatment of pain in renal colic. Comparison was made with a combination of dipyrone, pitofenone and fenpipramide, which is usually administered intravenously in Spain. With nifedipine, pain completely disappeared in 44% of the cases, and with the combination of drugs, in 89% (p less than 0.005). More adverse effects were noted with the combination than with nifedipine. Both treatments brought about a slight drop in arterial pressure without leading to hypotension in any case. There was no change in heart rate. The possible causes of the relatively low level of success with nifedipine were analyzed. The possibility of using nifedipine under certain circumstances in which other drugs are contraindicated or when their administration is unfeasible is suggested.

Abstract
We have studied the goniometric value of the tda angle and the alpha 1 antitrypsin phenotypes in a group of thirty atopic patients with the following patterns: 1) they were affected with asthma, atopic dermatitis and rhinitis. 2) they presented positive prick skin tests for pneumo-allergens and had. 3) positive allergic antecedents. There exists a significant statistical value for the lower tda angle in the right hand, in the MZ phenotypes of alpha 1 antitrypsin bearers, with P less than 0.05 significance. In the left hand there are many individual values that are identical (62% of the total test effected) thus the statistical methods cannot be applied satisfactorily, bearing in mind the significant difference as the statistical group recognized. From this and other previous works, we can conclude that an individual whose right hand tda angle reaches values near 75%, and with a MZ phenotype of alpha 1 antitrypsin, has a greater possibility of pertaining to one of the groups of asthma, atopic dermatitis and rhinitis symptomatology.

Abstract
We report 5 cases of renal allograft rupture in which diagnosis was established early through clinical data, laboratory tests and echography. Immediate surgery confirmed the suspicion in all cases. Acute rejection was present in 4 patients and in 1 the previous surgical puncture from the perirenal collection demonstrated serohematic fluid with a biological character similar to that of lymph. This latter case seemed to confirm the suspicion that any process associated with edema in a kidney with obstructed lymphatic tracts (meticulous lymphatic ligatures during donor extraction) is capable of causing a rupture. Conventional surgical treatment is dangerous and insecure on an edematous and friable kidney, resulting in a nephrectomy rate of 55.7 per cent and a postoperative death rate of 8 per cent. Hematoma evacuation, hemostasis by local compression and tridimensional containment of the ruptured areas should be the principles of this operation. By means of renal corsetage with lyophilized human dura these principles can be achieved. This surgical technique, which is simple and secure, its variations and future possibilities are described. In 3 of our 5 patients corsetage with lyophilized human dura was applied. All 5 grafts have taken. Renal function is good in 3 cases and acceptable in 2 at followup between 2 and 15 months.

Abstract
Severe hypertension and a decrease of renal function, with or without oliguria, suggest renal artery stenosis in the transplanted kidney. 6 renal artery stenoses were observed in 100 transplanted kidneys followed up for more than 3 months. In 4 patients, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed. 1 patient required a new percutaneous transluminal angioplasty 3 months later and a 2nd patient was submitted to surgery after 14 months. Surgery was performed in 2 more cases, with failure in 1. It seems that the endoarteric lesion during cold perfusion could be the main etiopathological factor, when associated with rejection episodes. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty is the treatment of choice in the management of renal artery stenosis in transplanted kidneys. Surgery must be reserved when it fails.

Abstract
Synopsis A new formulation for dermatological use and hair care was studied. Phosphate diesters of the nonyl-phenol type in association with cocoimidazoline derivatives are compared with four commercial formulations. Foaming capacity, eye and skin irritation, keratin solubilization and defatting properties were studied. The mixture was the best foamforming formulation and the best defatting agent. Also, it was non-irritant for skin and eyes at adequate dilutions and did not dissolve keratin. It is a good formulation for dermatological use and hair care, due to its detergent properties. It ranks high among safe products.

Abstract
Myxococcus coralloides D was found to produce a substance with a narrow range of antibacterial activity. This substance was produced during the exponential growth phase and was not inducible by ultraviolet light or mitomycin C treatment. The bacteriocin was precipitable by ammonium sulphate, and showed resistance to heat (100 degrees C for 10 min), trypsin, lysozyme, beta-glucuronidase, DNase, RNase, acetone, ethyl ether, urea and mercaptoethanol; it was partially destroyed by pronase and inactivated at extreme pH values. Electron microscopy did not reveal any phage-like particles associated with bacteriocin activity.

Abstract
Fourteen patients have been diagnosed for Giant Cell Arteritis by temporal biopsy or clinical criteria in the last five years. Two of them started with atypical symptoms. Polymyalgia Rheumatica was the commonest symptom (71%). Two patients (14%) had an irreversible blindness in eye one. Histologic changes of arteritis were shown by temporal biopsy in 8 cases, one of which had no cranial manifestations. A raised ESR was a constant finding (100%) followed by a alpha-2 globulin increase (93%) and anaemia (57%). One patient had rare complication of this disease: an aortic arch syndrome. The whole group responded well to the treatment.

Abstract
The nuclear DNA/cytoplasmic protein ratio was related to the oestradiol receptor content in both cytoplasmic (ERc) and nuclear (ERn) fractions in 165 cases of breast cancer. The patients under study were divided into groups according to whether their biopsies contained functional (ERc/ERn = +/+), abnormal (+/0) or non-detectable receptor (0/0). The mean microgram DNA/mg protein ratio was significantly decreased in both the abnormal and receptor-negative groups, with means of 30.4 and 30.2 respectively, when compared to the mean of 52.8 for the receptor-positive group. When the DNA/protein ratio for each patient was related to age, a discriminant line which clearly differentiated the ER +/+ group from the other two groups was obtained. It may be concluded that an increased DNA/protein ratio is related to the presence of ERn. Furthermore, since the DNA content per cell is higher in ER-negative tumours, an increase in cellularity must exist in ER-positive tumours.

Abstract
A "new" polyclonal activator of human peripheral blood B cells, formaldehyde-fixed Salmonella paratyphi B, is described. This bacterium does not stimulate cell proliferation as measured by incorporation of tritiated thymidine but does stimulate a subpopulation of B cells to secrete large amounts of IgM, IgG, and IgA in 7-day cell cultures. The immunoglobulins (Ig) produced by cells responding to S. paratyphi B are not specific antibodies against the bacterial antigens. In comparison with other B cell activators (pokeweed mitogen, Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I, and lipopolysaccharide), S. paratyphi B stimulation produced greater amounts of IgM but less IgG than pokeweed mitogen (PWM) or S. aureus Cowan I; lipopolysaccharide failed to stimulate significant Ig production on day 7 in most cases. In addition, the response to S. paratyphi apparently did not require T cell collaboration. These results suggest that the B cell subpopulation(s) responding to S. paratyphi B may be more differentiated B cells than those responding to either PWM or S. aureus Cowan I. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from five patients with common variable immunodeficiency without evidence of abnormal suppressor T cells or monocytes failed to respond to S. paratyphi B, whereas cells from two of the same patients responded well to S. aureus Cowan I and partially to PWM. Thus, S. paratyphi B appears to be superior to other B cell activators for studies of B cell function in normal and abnormal states.

Abstract
Abstract
The synthesis and secretion of immunoglobulins by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in cultures stimulated with pokeweed mitogen or Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I were evaluated by enumeration of cells containing cytoplasmic immunoglobulins and cells actively secreting immunoglobulins, and by quantitation of immunoglobulins released into culture supernatants. The two mitogens caused comparable stimulation of immunoglobulin production; however, in contrast to pokeweed mitogen, S. aureus was active in cultures depleted of T lymphocytes, and its stimulatory effects were resistant to the influence of suppressor T cells generated by co-stimulation with concanavalin A or by preincubation without mitogenic stimulus. These results indicate distinct pathways of induction and suppression of immunoglobulin synthesis for these two polyclonal B cell activators, and suggest that stimulation by S. aureus is less thymus dependent than that induced by pokeweed mitogen.

Abstract
An adaptation of the nephelometric assay for serum immunoglobulins has been developed for detection and quantitation of extracellular immunoglobulins in cultures of lymphoblastoid cell lines. This assay employs the standard equipment for laser nephelometry and commercial reagents for immunoglobulin quantitation. By adjusting dilutions of controls and sample volumes of culture supernatants, amounts of IgG and IgM below 1 microgram/ml can be detected in culture supernatants. At concentrations between 1 and 4 microgram/ml, day-to-day and within-run variations for IgM assays were 16 and 11% respectively. The possibility of measuring immunoglobulins secreted by cell lines by conventional laser nephelometry opens several areas of application in the study of the functional activity of B cells and of cell-cell interactions.

Abstract
Endoscopic surveys in the Department of Narino (Colombia) showed that natives of areas of very high risks for stomach cancer have a higher prevalence of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia than do persons born in other parts of Narino. In these surveys, diets were compared between individuals with and without evidence of these suspect precursor lesions of stomach cancer and between individuals born in the areas designated as high and low risk for stomach cancer. The composite evidence from the comparisons indicated lettuce to be negatively associated with stomach cancer and raised the possibility to a positive association for corn. The relationship of these findings to other epidemiologic evidence and the implications for applying the epidemiology of stomach cancer to the epidemiology of precursor lesions were examined.

Abstract
The urinary sediment of 56 patients with active urinary infection were studied through a direct immunofluorescence technique in order to detect the presence of antibody-coated bacteria. In 35-36 pyelonephritis cases the results were positive. However, in 11 cases with lower urinary infection there was no sign of antibody coasted bacteria. A pathological intravenous pyelogram (IVP) was obtained from 33 pyelonephritic cases. In the flurorescent antibody (FA) test was positive, one was negative. In the remaining three pyelonephritic cases the IVP was normal the the FA test positive. In these three cases, cystography revealed the presence of ureterovesical backflow. A good statistical correlation was obtained by comparing the positive results of the test with the titer of serum antibody against the bacteria causing the infection. We have introduced some variation to the original method which permits simpler administration of this test to ambulatory patients and increases the diagnostic possibility of those cases of bacteriuria less than 100,000 bacteria/ml.

Abstract
On 13 rabbits total longitudinal nephrotomies were performed on both kidneys. On the right side the margins of the parenchyma were sutured together with figure eight sutures. On the left, the nephrotomies were closed by tying ribbons of human dura around the kidney. Excretory urograms after 4-8 months showed no differences on both sides. On histological examination there was no difference of the scars. After roentgenological and histological criteria there are no advantages by closing kidney wounds with dura ribbons versus conventional suturing technique.
