Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review briefly the influence of dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) on tissue composition and functionality in early infancy. Moreover, the influences of LC-PUFA sources on plasma composition as well as the effects of these fatty acids on intestinal repair after malnutrition are discussed. RESULTS Human milk not only supplies essential fatty acids but also contains up to 2% of the total fatty acids as LC-PUFA, of which arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are considered the most important. Plasma and erythrocyte levels of both AA and DHA are decreased in infants fed artificial standard milk formulae. However, the supplementation of formulae with these fatty acids in amounts close to that of human milk leads to tissue LC-PUFA patterns similar to those of breast-fed infants. However, the bioavailability of LC-PUFA depends on the typical LC-PUFA source; egg phospholipids increases both AA and DHA in plasma phospholipids and HDL more than a mixture of tuna and fungal triglycerides. CONCLUSIONS Dietary LC-PUFA affects positively the growth and development of the infant and ameliorates the visual and cognitive functions, particularly in preterm infants. Likewise, LC-PUFA improves intestinal repair in severe protein-energy malnutrition; therefore, its qualitative and quantitative dietary supply should be considered.

Abstract
Previous evidence indicates that the recognition of the nectar delivered by forager honeybees within the colony may have been a primitive method of communication on food resources. Thus, the association between scent and reward that nectar foragers establish while they collect on a given flower species should be retrieved during trophallaxis, i.e., the transfer of liquid food by mouth, and, accordingly, foraging experience could affect the occurrence of these interactions inside the nest. We used experimental arenas to analyze how crop scents carried by donor bees affect trophallaxis among foragers, i.e., donors and receivers, which differ in their foraging experience. Results showed that whenever the foragers had collected unscented sugar solution from a feeder the presence of scents in the solution carried by donors did not affect the occurrence of trophallaxis nor its dynamics. In contrast, whenever the foragers had previous olfactory information, new scents present in the crop of the donors negatively affected the occurrence, but not the dynamics of trophallaxis. Thus, the association learned at the food source seems to be retrieved during trophallaxis, and it is possible that known scents present in the mouthparts of nest-mates may operate as a triggering stimulus to elicit trophallactic behavior within the hive.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle glycogen is an essential energy substrate for muscular activity. The biochemical properties of the enzymes involved in de novo synthesis of glycogen were analysed in two types of rabbit skeletal muscle fiber (fast- and slow-twitch). Glycogen concentration was higher in fast-twitch muscle than in slow-twitch muscle, but the latter contained many more small intermediate-acceptor molecules that could act as glycogen synthase substrates. The enzymes involved in de novo synthesis of glycogen in fast-twitch muscle were strongly stimulated by Glc-6-P, but those in slow-twitch muscle were not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection may lead to peptic ulcer disease, and causes significant morbidity in patients with cirrhosis. The measurement of H. pylori antigens in human stools has been proposed as a valuable, non-invasive, diagnostic tool. A number of tests have recently been commercialized. However, very few data are available on their reliability in patients with cirrhosis. AIM To evaluate the usefulness of three new tests--HpSA (Meridian Diagnostics Inc., Cincinnati, OH, USA), Simple H. pyl (OPERON S.A., Zaragoza, Spain) and FemtoLab H. pylori (Connex, Martinsried, Germany)--in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in cirrhotic patients. METHODS H. pylori infection was determined in 79 cirrhotic patients (48 men, 31 women; age range, 29-82 years; mean, 62 +/- 11 years) by concordance of histology and urea breath test. The sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of each stool test were calculated. RESULTS According to the reference method, the sensitivities of HpSA, Simple H. pyl and FemtoLab H. pylori immunoassays were 76%, 87% and 78%, respectively, and their specificities were 93%, 62% and 79%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Faecal tests are non-invasive and easy-to-perform tools for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection. However, their sensitivity and specificity seem to be non-optimal in patients with cirrhosis.

Abstract
AIM The hypothesis that patients with hyperglycaemia during admission, regardless of previous diagnosis of diabetes, have worse prognosis than those with normal glucose values is controversial. The objective was to assess the role of hyperglycaemia on short-term mortality after myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS AND RESULTS A cohort study nested in a prospective registry of MI patients in the reference hospital of Gerona, Spain was performed. All consecutive MI patients under 75 were registered between 1993 and 1996. Patient and clinical characteristics, including previous diagnosis of diabetes, glycaemia on admission and in the next four days, were recorded. Patients with glycaemia on admission or four day mean glycaemia >6.67 mmol/l were considered hyperglycaemic. The main outcome measure was mortality at 28 days. Of 662 patients with MI included, 195 (29.7%) had previously known diabetes mellitus, but 457 (69.0%) had glycaemia >6.67 mmol/l on admission. Patients with hyperglycaemia on admission were older, more often female, more frequently had a previous diagnosis of diabetes, developed more complications, and had higher 28 day mortality. The effect of admission glycaemia >6.67 mmol/l on 28 day mortality was independent of major confounding factors, particularly previous diagnosis of diabetes (OR=4.20, 95% confidence intervals 1.18 to 14.96). CONCLUSIONS Higher 28 day mortality was observed among MI patients with glycaemia on admission >6.67 mmol/l compared with patients with lower levels, independently of major confounding variables and, particularly, previous diagnosis of diabetes. This early, simple, and inexpensive marker of bad prognosis after MI should prompt the application of more aggressive treatment of MI and risk factors and, probably, of glycaemia during admission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer is a frequent complication in cirrhotic patients and its morbidity rate is high. In spite of this, diagnostic methods for H. pylori infection have not been fully evaluated in these patients. AIM To evaluate H. pylori diagnostic methods in patients with liver cirrhosis. METHODS One hundred and one cirrhotic patients were included in the study. Three antral and two corpus biopsies were obtained for rapid urease test of the antral mucosa, and Giemsa stain and immunohistochemistry were performed for both the corpus and antrum. Serology, 13C-urea breath test and faecal H. pylori antigen determination were also carried out. RESULTS Sixty-two patients were positive and 35 were negative for H. pylori infection; four were indeterminate. The sensitivity and specificity were 90.4% and 100%, respectively, for antral histology, 100% and 100% for gastric body histology, 90.4% and 100% for antral immunohistochemistry, 96.2% and 96.7% for body immunochemistry, 85.7% and 97% for rapid urease test, 83.6% and 55.9% for serology, 96.4% and 97.1% for 13C-urea breath test and 75.4% and 94.1% for faecal antigen. CONCLUSION The most reliable tests for H. pylori infection in cirrhotic patients were the 13C-urea breath test and gastric body histology.

Abstract
Five monocyclic 4-benzoyl-4-phenyl-beta-lactam derivatives in carbon tetrachloride solutions were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The Fourier self-deconvolution method was applied to enhance the resolution of the FTIR spectra. The calculated spectra of these five compounds, which were obtained by quantum mechanical methods, were compared with FTIR data. A complete assignment of the vibrational frequencies in the 4000-400 cm(-1) range was made. Several vibrations were selected as being useful to characterize the beta-lactam ring. Substituents on N1 (p-methoxyphenyl) and C3 (methyl, phenyl, maleimidyl, and phthalimidyl) on the beta-lactam ring increase the amide resonance and the planarity of the ring. The optimized geometry along with the total electric charges on the four atoms of the ring support an antibiotic action mechanism by a nucleophilic attack of the enzymes on the carbonyl carbon atom of the beta-lactam ring.

Abstract
We undertook a phase II trial in 17 patients with malignant glioma and large measurable disease to assess response rate and survival with pre-irradiation chemotherapy, using higher doses than standard, trying to improve the outcome. Patients characteristics were: male/female 10/7, age 49 (range 23-59), median Karnofsky index 90% (range 70-100), glioblastoma multiforme/anaplastic astrocytoma 14/3. Treatment consisted of 2 cycles of carboplatin 200 mg/m(2) days 1-3 (or AUC x 8, total dose) plus cyclophosphamide 1000 mg/m(2) days 1-3. One partial response (6.5%) and two stabilizations (13.5%) were observed after pre-irradiation chemotherapy. Twelve out of 15 patients (80%) progressed after chemotherapy. Median survival time was 7.6 months and the survival at 1 year was 33%. Main toxicity was hematologic in the first cycle: neutropenia grade 4 in 100%; thrombocytopenia grade 4 in 73% and grade 3 in 27%; anemia grade 3 in 7%; in the second cycle: neutropenia and thrombocytopenia grade 4 in 100% and anemia grade 3 in 50%). No toxic death was related to treatment. This regimen showed limited activity in malignant glioma with large residual disease after surgery or biopsy.

Abstract
Phenoxyl radical (C(6)H(5)O) was prepared photochemically in low-temperature argon matrices. The infrared absorption spectra were obtained for C(6)H(5)O and for the isotopically labeled species C(6)D(5)O and 1-(13)C(12)C(5)H(5)O. All but one IR-active fundamental vibrations were detected, most of them not previously observed. Combination of results from IR linear dichroism measurements on photooriented samples, determination of absolute IR intensities with the help of internal standards, analysis of isotopic shifts, and quantum chemical predictions (B3LYP/cc-pVTZ) led to a detailed assignment of phenoxyl radical vibrations. Significant frequency shifts are observed with respect to previously reported data based on resonance Raman studies in polar solutions. For some vibrations, these shifts reflect environment-induced structural changes, such as increase of the quinoid character of the phenoxyl radical in polar media. In particular, the frequency of the CO stretching vibration, readily observable in both IR and Raman experiments, is extremely sensitive to the environment and can thus be used to probe its polarity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To propose a neuropsychological study of the various aspects of self-consciousness (SC) in Alzheimer's disease. METHODS Forty-five patients with probable mild or moderate AD were included in the study. Severity of their dementia was assessed by the Mini Mental State (MMS). Fourteen questions were prepared to evaluate SC. RESULTS No significant correlations were found between SC score and educational level, age, and duration of disease. A significant correlation was found between SC score and the severity of dementia, whereas frontal disturbances were just short of the significance threshold. The various aspects of SC were not impaired to the same degree. The most disturbed ones were awareness of cognitive deficiencies, moral judgements and prospective memory. The least disturbed aspects were awareness of identity and of mental representation of the body. Items relating to anosognosia and moral judgements were significantly correlated with the MMS score, whereas affective state, body representation disorders, prospective memory, and capacities for introspection were not related to the severity of the dementia. Consciousness of identity was sound, regardless of MMS score. CONCLUSIONS AD clearly induces an heterogeneous impairment of SC. SC requires a convergence of many neural networks. In AD, neuronal alterations involve many cortical areas and information sent to the associative frontal cortex from memory, language and visuospatial areas is lacking or disturbed. Thus, the sequential order of successive stimuli cannot be maintained by the heteromodal associative cortex (dorsal convexity of the prefrontal cortex), and the supramodal associative cortex (located rostrally in the frontal lobes) is unable to provide reliable monitoring and assessment of simultaneous neural cognitive networks carrying insufficient and inadequate input. The core deficiency in AD patients might be impaired SC equated with the disability to maintain sequential and simultaneous "attention to life". The Self-Consciousness Questionnaire, a clinical scale providing multidimensional measurement, indicates that different aspects of consciousness are not correlated with overall cognitive deficiency as determined by the MMSE.

Abstract
A series of benzo(b)thiophenesulfonamide 1,1-dioxide derivatives (BTS) have been designed and synthesized as candidate antineoplastic drugs. Several of these compounds have shown in vitro cytotoxic activity on leukaemic CCRF-CEM cells. The cytotoxic BTS, but not the inactive ones, were able to inhibit a tumour cell-specific NADH oxidase activity present in the membrane of CCRF-CEM cells.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyse whether the risk of death within 28 days and three years after a first Q wave myocardial infarction was higher in hospitalised women than in men. DESIGN Follow up study. PATIENTS AND SETTING All consecutive first Q wave myocardial infarction patients aged 25 to 74 years (447 women and 2322 men) admitted to a tertiary hospital in Gerona, Spain, from 1978 to 1997 were registered and followed up for three years. MAIN RESULTS Women were older, presented more comorbidity and developed more severe myocardial infarctions than men. A significant interaction was found between sex and age. Women aged 65-74 had higher early mortality risk than men of the same age (OR 1.62; 95% CI 1.01, 2.66) after adjusting for age, comorbidity and acute complications including heart failure. Women under 65 tended to be at lower risk of early mortality than men (0.45 (95% CI 0.19, 1.04). Three year mortality of 28 day survivors did not differ between sexes. CONCLUSIONS These data support the idea that the higher 28 day mortality in hospitalised women with a first Q wave myocardial infarction is mainly attributable to the large number of patients aged 65 to 74 years in whom the risk is higher than that in men. Women under 65 with myocardial infarction do not seem to be a special group of risk.

Abstract
The monohapto neutral 2-(diphenylphosphino)aniline (PNH(2)) complexes [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)X(PNH(2))] (X = C(6)F(5) (1), Cl (2)) have been obtained from [Au(C(6)F(5))(3)(tht)] or [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)(micro-Cl)](2) and PNH(2), and the cationic [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)(PNH(2))]ClO(4) (3) has been similarly prepared from [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)(OEt(2))(2)]ClO(4) and PNH(2) or from 2 and AgClO(4). The neutral amido complex [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)(PNH)] (4) can be obtained by deprotonation of 3 with PPN(acac) (acac = acetylacetonate) or by treatment of the chloro complex 2 with Tl(acac). It reacts with [Ag(OClO(3))(PPh(3))] or [Au(OClO(3))(PPh(3))] to give the dinuclear species [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)[PNH(MPPh(3))]]ClO(4) (M = Ag (5), Au (6)). The latter can also be obtained by reaction of equimolar amounts of 3 and [Au(acac)(PPh(3))]; when the molar ratio of the same reagents is 1:2, the trinuclear cationic complex [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)[PN(AuPPh(3))(2)]]ClO(4) (7) is obtained. The crystal structures of complexes 2-4 and 7 have been established by X-ray crystallography; the last-mentioned displays an unusual Au(I)-Au(III) interaction.

Abstract
Aromatic carboxylic acids substituted with methoxylated groups are among the most abundant products in "alpechin", the wastes resulting from pressing olives to obtain olive oil. Degradation of o-methoxybenzoate by an stable consortium made of a gram positive bacterium, Arthrobacter oxydans, and gram negative one, Pantotea agglomerans, was shown to mineralize this compound efficiently. The concerted action of both microorganisms was needed for the two first steps in the process, namely, the conversion of o-methoxybenzoate into salycilate, and the hydroxylation of the latter to gentisate. Gentisate was further degraded by the Arthrobacter strain.

Abstract
Recombinant human interferon alpha2b was expressed intracellularly in Escherichia coli as insoluble aggregates using a new expression vector, and was purified to homogeneity using essentially two-step chromatographic procedures, i.e. immobilized metal-ion-affinity chromatography and reversed-phase HPLC. The established purification process is highly reproducible and leads to a total recovery of approx. 12% with a specific biological activity of higher than 1x10(8) i.u./mg of protein, which is comparable with the international requirement for interferon alpha2b. For purified protein we report conformational stability as a function of pH and temperature using differential scanning calorimetry and CD. Thermal unfolding as a function of pH showed only one endotherm at a temperature higher than 45 degrees C, and was reversible at pH 2-3.75 and irreversible at pH 4-10. At pH 7.0, the most stable condition, the conformational stability depends on protein concentration and ionic strength. The highly helical secondary structure is very conserved over the whole pH range studied, including at high temperatures.

Abstract
Although mouse oocytes and cleavage-stage embryos prefer pyruvate and lactate for metabolic fuels, they do take up and metabolize glucose. Indeed, presentation of glucose during the cleavage stages is required for subsequent blastocyst formation, which normally relies on uptake and metabolism of large amounts of glucose. Expression of the facilitative glucose transporter GLUT1 was examined using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting, and in polyspermic oocytes, metabolism of glucose was measured and compared with that of pyruvate and glutamine. GLUT1 was observed in all oocytes and embryos, and membrane and vesicular staining was present. Additionally, however, in polyspermic oocytes, the most intense staining was in the pronuclei, and this nuclear staining persisted in cleaving normal embryos. Furthermore, GLUT1 expression appeared to be up-regulated both in nuclei and plasma membranes following culture of oocytes in the absence of glucose. In polyspermic oocytes, the metabolism of glucose, but not of pyruvate or glutamine, was directly proportional to the number of pronuclei formed. After compaction, nuclear staining diminished, and GLUT1 localized to basolateral membranes of the outer cells and trophectoderm. In blastocysts, a weak but uniform staining of inner-cell-mass plasma membranes was apparent. The results are discussed in terms of potential roles for GLUT1 in pronuclei of oocytes and zygotes, nuclei of cleavage-stage embryos, and a transepithelial transport function for GLUT1, probably coupled with GLUT3, in compacted embryos and blastocysts.
