Abstract
Posterior reversible encephalopathy is a complex but well-recognized clinical and radiological entity associated with a variety of benign and malignant conditions including hypertensive encephalopathy, eclampsia, renal failure and immunosuppressive drugs. The pathogenesis is incompletely understood, although it seems to be related to the breakthrough of auto-regulation and endothelial dysfunction. The clinical syndromes typically involve headache, altered mental status, seizures, visual disturbance and other focal neurological signs and radiographically reversible vasogenic subcortical edema without infarction. Here, we report a case of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia who received allogenic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) and immunosuppressive drugs.

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted using twenty three rice genotypes including three check varieties during the period from June to December, 2013, at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance (GA) for yield and yield associated traits in rice. The experiment was laid down in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, number of filled grains per panicle, days to 50% flowering, thousand grain weight, grain width and grain yield showed relatively high genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV) estimates. The PCV were higher than GCV for all eight traits indicating that they all interacted with the environment to some extent. High heritability was obtained for grain width (88.54%), followed by days to 50% flowering (87.61%), thousand grain weight (81.96%), grain length (81.94%), days to maturity (81.81%) and number of filled grains per panicle (78.19%) which indicates high heritable portion of variation. High to medium estimates of heritability and genetic advance were obtained for number of filled grains per panicle (18.97), days to 50% flowering (11.89), days to maturity (12.16) indicating the roles of additive gene action and a good scope of selection using their phenotypic performance. Considering, all of these characters, filled gains per panicle and days to 50% flowering and maturity were important yield related traits and could be used for selection in rice breeding programs.Progressive Agriculture 26:26-31, 2015

Abstract
Silkworm, Bombyx mori, has passive immunity and can be infected by pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, it can be used as a robust bacterial infection model for screening of pathogenic isolates from various sources. In this work, 11 environmental, clinical and veterinary isolates were screened for pathogenicity using silkworm larvae by injecting bacterial suspension through their dorsal surface and observing response. Experimental conditions were established by using Bacillus thuringiensis SW_R_F_1, Escherichia coli 0157:H7, E. coli DH5a and 0.6% saline. Nine out of 11 isolates were detected pathogenic after screening. The biochemical and genomic analysis of the nine test isolates confirmed their pathogenicity. The LD₅₀ of Pseudomonas aeruginosa 47D and Salmonella Typhimurium 77 were 4.63x107 at 12 hours was 8.02x10⁷ cells/lOOμI/gram at 24 hours respectively. These results indicated that silkworm exhibits differential pathological response for pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria, and can be used as an alternative to animal model for screening diverse isolates.

Abstract
This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in Pediatric Out Patient Department (OPD) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) from November 2013 to April 2014 to assess the knowledge and practices of the mothers about breastfeeding. Four hundred mothers having children 6 months to 2 years of age attended at OPD of MMCH for any cause were included in the study by systematic random sampling. A structured, pre-tested, interview schedule was used to collect data from mothers. All mothers were continuing to breastfeed their children. Two hundred and seventy-two (68.00%) infants received breast feeding within 1 hour after birth, while 128(32.00%) infants received breast feeding after 1 hour of birth. Of 128, in 48(37.50%) cases, mother's illness was the reason for delay in initiation of breast feeding, whereas in 70(54.69%) cases, it was due to reduced milk production on mother's statement. Pre-lacteal feeding was given in 96(24.00%) children. Among them honey was given in 24(25.00%) cases, cow's milk was given in 14(14.58%) cases, sugar water was given in 18(18.75%) cases and formula milk was given in 40(41.67%) cases. One hundred and twenty-eight (32.00%) mothers started to give their child food other than breast milk before 3 months of age and 148(37.00) mothers started to give their child food other than breast milk before 6 months of age. The reason for starting to give their child food other than breast milk before 6 months of age was mother's assumption of milk insufficiency in 166(60.14%) cases and baby's cry for hunger in 110(39.86%) cases. Formula milk was given in 120(30.00%) infants before 6 months of age. Among them 96(80.00%) mothers prepared it with larger amount of water. Plain water was given in 240(60.00%) children before the age of 6 months. One hundred and twenty-four (31.00%) children were exclusively breastfeed for first 6 months of age. Breastfeeding is almost universal in Bangladesh but the exclusive breastfeeding rate is alarmingly very low. Great emphasis is needed to educate mothers about benefits of colostrum, exclusive breastfeeding, and the harmful effects of pre-lacteal feeding.

Abstract
Plants are constantly challenged by various abiotic stresses that negatively affect growth and productivity worldwide. During the course of their evolution, plants have developed sophisticated mechanisms to recognize external signals allowing them to respond appropriately to environmental conditions, although the degree of adjustability or tolerance to specific stresses differs from species to species. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS; hydrogen peroxide, H2O2; superoxide, [Formula: see text]; hydroxyl radical, OH(⋅) and singlet oxygen, (1)O2) is enhanced under abiotic and/or biotic stresses, which can cause oxidative damage to plant macromolecules and cell structures, leading to inhibition of plant growth and development, or to death. Among the various ROS, freely diffusible and relatively long-lived H2O2 acts as a central player in stress signal transduction pathways. These pathways can then activate multiple acclamatory responses that reinforce resistance to various abiotic and biotic stressors. To utilize H2O2 as a signaling molecule, non-toxic levels must be maintained in a delicate balancing act between H2O2 production and scavenging. Several recent studies have demonstrated that the H2O2-priming can enhance abiotic stress tolerance by modulating ROS detoxification and by regulating multiple stress-responsive pathways and gene expression. Despite the importance of the H2O2-priming, little is known about how this process improves the tolerance of plants to stress. Understanding the mechanisms of H2O2-priming-induced abiotic stress tolerance will be valuable for identifying biotechnological strategies to improve abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants. This review is an overview of our current knowledge of the possible mechanisms associated with H2O2-induced abiotic oxidative stress tolerance in plants, with special reference to antioxidant metabolism.

Abstract
SETTING Tuberculosis (TB) program, Damien Foundation Projects, Bangladesh. OBJECTIVE To summarize the outcome and its determinants of the first treatment for multidrug-resistant TB using a standardized regimen consisting of a minimum 9 months. DESIGN This was a prospective, observational study of a gatifloxacin (GFX) based directly observed regimen, mainly with initial hospitalization. The 4-month intensive phase was extended until sputum smear conversion. Patients were monitored using culture for up to 2 years after treatment completion. RESULTS Of the 515 patients who met the study inclusion criteria and were successively enrolled from 2005 to 2011, 84.4% had a bacteriologically favorable outcome. Due to extensive disease with delayed sputum conversion, only half of the patients completed treatment within 9 months; however, 95% were able to complete treatment within 12 months. Eleven patients failed or relapsed, and 93.1% of the 435 patients who were successfully treated completed at least 12 months post-treatment follow-up. The strongest risk factor for a bacteriologically unfavorable outcome was high-level fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistance, particularly when compounded by initial pyrazinamide (PZA) resistance. Low-level FQ resistance had no unfavorable effect on treatment outcome. Amplification of drug resistance occurred only once, in a patient strain that was initially only susceptible to kanamycin and clofazimine. CONCLUSION The excellent outcome of the Bangladesh regimen was largely maintained. Bacteriological treatment failures and relapses were rare, except among patients with high-level GFX resistance, notably in the presence of PZA resistance.

Abstract
Objective: To know effect of hematoma and perihematomal edema volume on Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) at the time of admission in patients with spontaneous lobar and basal ganglia hemorrhage.Methods: this cross sectional study was conducted in Neurosurgery department, BSMMU to observe effect of hematoma and perihematomal edema volume on GCS at the time of admission in patients with spontaneous lobar and basal ganglia hemorrhage. The duration of study period was from November 2005 to April 2007.Results: a total 48 patients were included in the study and the variables that were analyzed included site of hematoma, volume of hematoma, perihematomal edema and the initial GCS score. Associations between the hematoma and perihematomal edema, site of hemorrhage and perihematomal edema, hematoma volume and GCS at the time of admission, perihematomal edema volume and GCS at the time of admission were evaluated. Level of consciousness (GCS) at the time of admission is the key factor in predicting outcome and neurological deterioration. In our study we found significant association between- hematoma and perihematomal edema volume, hematoma volume and GCS at the time of admission, perihematomal edema volume and GCS at the time of admission. But there was no significant association found between hemorrhage site and perihematomal edema.Conclusion: more the volume of hematoma more was the volume of perihematomal edema. More the volume of hematoma less was the GCS. More the volume of perihematomal edema less was the GCS. But we found no significant association between site of hemorrhage and perihematomal edema volume. GCS is an established predictor of outcome in patients with SICH (spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage). Accurate prediction of the outcome in ICH patients is important for several reasons: a reliable prognosis must be given to patient and relatives as soon as possible, realistic rehabilitation goals should be set and resources should be allocated in the most efficient way.Pulse Vol.7 January-December 2014 p.22-28

Abstract
Varied environmental compartments including soils are being contaminated by a myriad toxic metal(loid)s (hereafter termed as "metal/s") mainly through anthropogenic activities. These metals may contaminate food chain and bring irreparable consequences in human. Plant-based approach (phytoremediation) stands second to none among bioremediation technologies meant for sustainable cleanup of soils/sites with metal-contamination. In turn, the capacity of plants to tolerate potential consequences caused by the extracted/accumulated metals decides the effectiveness and success of phytoremediation system. Chelation is among the potential mechanisms that largely govern metal-tolerance in plant cells by maintaining low concentrations of free metals in cytoplasm. Metal-chelation can be performed by compounds of both thiol origin (such as GSH, glutathione; PCs, phytochelatins; MTs, metallothioneins) and non-thiol origin (such as histidine, nicotianamine, organic acids). This paper presents an appraisal of recent reports on both thiol and non-thiol compounds in an effort to shed light on the significance of these compounds in plant-metal tolerance, as well as to provide scientific clues for the advancement of metal-phytoextraction strategies.

Abstract
The study was aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of crude and aqueous extract of garlic (Allium stivum) against standard strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. An interventional study was conducted in Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in collaboration with Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) and antibiotic Imipenem were also determined with the help of broth dilution method. Inhibitory effect of crude garlic extract (CGE) was determined by inoculation of bacteria in CGE incorporated nutrient agar (NA) media and for AGE antibacterial effect was determined by disc diffusion method. All experiments except disc diffusion procedure were reconfirmed by subculture in pure NA media. In case of CGE the growth inhibition of test organism was observed in 30% CGE incorporated NA media. On the other hand sensitivity of AGE also determined in disc diffusion and the zone of inhibition (ZOI) was 7 mm, 12 mm and 20 mm at 25 μg/10 μl, 50 μg/10 μl and 100 μg/10 μl concentrations respectively. The MICs of AGE and Imipenem were 600 μg/ml and 1μg/ml. The MIC of imipenen was far less in comparison with the MIC of AGE. From the findings it is clearly determined that both the extracts have definite antibacterial effect upon Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Further studies are required to detect and isolate the active ingredients present in the Garlic extract responsible for antibacterial effect. Then their effects against the studied organism should be studied in vivo separately and its toxicity profile should also be taken into account. Only then the Garlic extracts fulfilled the criteria for its therapeutic use. Still then external application advised for burn and superficial skin infections and may be used in food poisoning, and respiratory tract infection along with conventional antibiotics which are used in those conditions.

Abstract
Suitable algorithms based on a combination of two or more simple rapid HIV assays have been shown to have a diagnostic accuracy comparable to double enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or double ELISA with Western Blot strategies. The aims of this study were to evaluate the performance of five simple rapid HIV assays using whole blood samples from voluntary and replacement blood donors & HIV-infected patients (positive samples from BSMMU, Dhaka). Five rapid HIV assays: Determine™ HIV-1/2 (Inverness Medical), SD Bioline HIV 1/2 3.0 (Standard Diagnostics Inc.), First Response HIV Card 1-2.0 (PMC Medical India Pvt Ltd.), HIV1/2 Stat-Pak Dipstick (Chembio Diagnostic System, Inc) and Uni-Gold™ HIV-1/2 (Biotech) were evaluated between 1st February to 30th June, 2013 using 400 whole blood samples from voluntary and replacement blood donors. All samples that were reactive on all or any of the five rapid assays and 10% of non-reactive samples were tested on a confirmatory Inno-Lia HIV I/II immunoblot assay (Immunogenetics). Only 01 sample including ten positive samples from BSMMU were confirmed HIV-1 antibody positive, while 399 were HIV negative. The sensitivity at initial testing of Determine, SD Bioline and Uni-Gold™ was 100% (95% CI; 99.1-100) while First Response and Stat-Pak had sensitivity of 99.5% (95% CI; 98.2-99.9) and 97.7% (95% CI; 95.7-98.9) respectively, which increased to 100% (95% CI; 99.1-100) on repeat testing. The initial specificity of the Uni-Gold™ assay was 100% (95% CI; 99.6-100) while specificities were 99.6% (95% CI; 99-99.9), 99.4% (95% CI; 98.8-99.7), 99.6% (95% CI; 99-99.9) and 99.8% (95% CI; 99.3-99.9) for Determine, SD Bioline, First Response and Stat-Pak assays, respectively. There was no any sample which was concordantly false positive in Uni-Gold™, Determine and SD Bioline assays. An alternative confirmatory HIV testing strategy based on initial testing on either SD Bioline or Determine assays followed by testing of reactive samples on the Determine or SD Bioline gave 100% sensitivity (95% CI; 99.1-100) and 100% specificity (95% CI; 96-99.1) with Uni-Gold™ as tiebreaker for discordant results.

Abstract
This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in Pediatric out Patient Department (OPD) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) from March 2014 to August 2014 to assess the knowledge and practices of the mothers in acute diarrhoeal diseases in children under-five years of age regarding use of oral rehydration solution (ORS), zinc, other drugs and feeding practices. Four hundred children under-five years of age having acute diarrhoea were included in the study by systematic random sampling. A structured, pretested, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from mothers of children having diarrhoeal diseases. ORS was offered by 360(90.00%) of the mothers. Out of which 279(77.50%) used it by their own knowledge. One hundred and ninety-one (53.06%) mothers prepared it correctly, while 169(46.94%) prepared it incorrectly. Of 169, 129(35.83%) mothers used less amount of water, while 40(11.11%) mothers used much amount of water to prepare ORS. Of 360 mothers, 89(24.72%) mixed part of the content of ORS sachet at a time. Of 360 mothers, only 55(15.28%) offered correct amount of ORS after each purging. Zinc was offered in 142(35.50%) children. Of 400, only 13(3.25%) mothers used recommended home-based fluid, while 70(17.50%) mothers offered increased amount of fluid to their child. Drugs other than zinc and ORS were used in 247(61.75%) children. Among drugs, other than zinc and ORS, antibiotics was used in 109(44.13%) cases, whereas antiprotozoal in 97(39.27%) cases. Amount of liquid given was more than usual in 70(17.50%) children, same as usual in 57(14.25%) children and less than usual in 273(68.25%) children. Amount of food given was same as usual in 59(14.75%) children, while less than usual in 341(85.25%) children. Control of diarrhoeal diseases programme is successful in introducing ORS at mass level. Great emphasis is needed to educate mothers about preparation and quantity of ORS to be given to children with diarrhoeal diseases.

Abstract
DeQuervain's disease of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist, is a common wrist pathology, pain results from resisted gliding of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis tendon in the fibroosseous canal. Management of resistant cases of DeQuervain's disease with failed conservative treatment treated by surgical decompression yield satisfactory outcomes. A large number of patients being dissatisfied with the medical treatment, still present with persistent pain and positive clinical finding. Surgical decompression is an effective method for the treatment of resistant cases of DeQuervain's disease. Outcome variables were measured by Scheller, Forget and Macey evaluation criteria. Most of our patients were female 28(93.3%), housewife 17(56.7%) with mean age of 41.57 years, ranging from 25-60 years. Right sided involvement was 20(66.7%) and Left sided involvement was 10(33.3%). Restricted movement of thumb in 30(100%) were the predominant symptoms. One (3.3%) patient develop chronic tenosynovitis, 1(3.3%) patient develop hypertrophic scar. There was no wound infection in the follow-up period of 3-18 months. Satisfactory results were found in 29(96.7%).

Abstract
Hyperbilirubinemia is common in neonates. The value of exchange transfusion (ET) is recognized. The procedure has some risks and complications. This descriptive observational cross sectional study was done in the Neonatology department during the period of January 2013 to December 2013. Total 62 patients were studied. ET was done in 47 patients. Among 47 patients, 29(61.7%) were male and 18(38.3%) were female. The most common cause of ET was Rh incompatibility (46.8%). In order of frequency, major findings were ABO incompatibility (25.5%), unidentified (14.9%), Sepsis (6.4%), minor blood group incompatibility (4.3%) and others (2.1%) respectively. Mean Serum bilirubin level was 22±5.1mg/dl. Most common complications following ET were anemia (12.7%), Sepsis (10.6%), and omphalitis (6.4%). The overall mortality observed was 6.4%. The majority of the adverse events associated with ET were treatable.

Abstract
Soft tissue tumours and tumour like lesions are relatively rare. They pose diagnostic difficulty due to wide morphological variation as well as overlapping clinical and pathological features. The relative frequency of soft tissue tumours varies throughout world. This study was undertaken to find out the distribution of soft tissue tumours and tumour like lesions in Babgladesh. Four hundred and sixty one cases of soft tissue tumour and tumour like lesions were studied to see the demographic and clinicopathologic pattern. Benign 320(69.4%) and malignant 141(30.6%) cases were recorded. Of all cases mean age was 31.07±16.87 years with M:F ratio of 1:0.71 (p=0.001). Upper extremity was the most common site. Majority of the benign cases (84.1%) were superficially located whereas majority of malignant cases (89.2%) were deep seated (p=0.001). Lipoma and fibrosarcoma was the most common benign and malignant tumour respectively observed in this study. In childhood group, rhabdomyosarcona was the commonest one. The distribution pattern of soft tissue tumours in Bangladeshi population is roughly similar to that described in other countries with few exceptions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Relaxin family peptide receptor 3 (RXFP3) is expressed in brain areas important for processing sensory information and feeding, suggesting that it may be a target for anti-anxiety and anti-obesity drugs. We examined the effects of H3 relaxin, the biased agonist H2 relaxin and the antagonist, R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5, on RXFP3 signalling to establish their suitability as tools to assess the physiological roles of RXFP3. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The signalling profile of the RXFP3 ligands was determined using reporter gene assays, multiplexed signalling assays and direct examination of receptor-G protein and receptor-β-arrestin interactions using BRET. KEY RESULTS H2 relaxin activated p38MAPK and ERK1/2 with lower efficacy than H3 relaxin, but had similar efficacy for JNK1/2 phosphorylation. H2 or H3 relaxin activation of p38MAPK, JNK1/2 or ERK1/2 involved Pertussis toxin-sensitive G-proteins. R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5 blocked H3 relaxin AP-1 reporter gene activation, but not H2 relaxin AP-1 activation or H3 relaxin NF-κB activation. R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5 activated the SRE reporter, but did not inhibit either H2 or H3 relaxin SRE activation. R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5 blocked H3 relaxin-stimulated p38MAPK and ERK1/2 phosphorylation, but was a weak partial agonist for p38MAPK and ERK1/2 signalling. p38MAPK activation by R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5 was G protein-independent. H3 relaxin-activated RXFP3 interacts with Gαi2 , Gαi3 , Gαo A and Gαo B whereas H2 relaxin or R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5 induce interactions only with Gαi2 or Gαo B . Only H3 relaxin promoted RXFP3/β-arrestin interactions that were blocked by R3(BΔ23-27)R/I5. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Understanding signalling profile of drugs acting at RXFP3 is essential for development of therapies targeting this receptor.

Abstract
Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) serotypes O, A and Asia1 are responsible for significant number of disease outbreaks in Bangladesh; however serotype Asia1 has not been reported in circulation since 1996. The present investigation reports the detection of serotype FMDV Asia1 from local farms in 2012 and 2013 outbreaks. The farms were located in Jessore and Gazipur districts, and one of these farms was under vaccine control programme. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete VP1 gene revealed that FMDV Asia1 is under genetic lineage C having close similarity to the Asia1 sequences of Indian origin. The circulatory genotype Asia1 showed VP1 protein sequence heterogeneity of eight amino acid substitutions within the G-H loop with the vaccine strain [IND 63/72 (AY304994)] used in vaccination programme. ELISA assay revealed that, of seven, only one local field serum sample (cattle vaccinated 38 days earlier) was positive at a titre level of >2.4 (log10) but failed to protect the cattle from infection occurred by the virus. This investigation focused that the eight amino acid substitution in VP1 protein at G-H loop of the locally circulated FMDV serotype Asia1 strain may be a reason for current vaccination failure.

Abstract
This study consisted of two experiments, conducted to assess the impact of phase at which vegetable protein (VP) diets are introduced to broiler chicks, and preference of birds for diets based on soybean or canola meal (CM). Two hundred and ten day-old Cobb 500 chicks were randomly distributed into five dietary groups in the main experiment. One group was fed on animal protein (AP) diet all through to 21 days of age; two other groups were started on AP diet for 7 days and then switched to diets containing soybean meal (AP-SBM) or AP-CM, while two other diets (SBM-AP and CM-AP) were started on one of the VP diets for 7 days and then switched to AP diet. A sub-experiment on thirty birds raised on a commercial diet to 7 days was used in a feed selection test to quantify the preference of birds for the diets containing mainly CM or SBM. Chicks were reared under similar care and management conditions and the diets were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous. Results of the main experiment showed that chicks on CM-AP diet ate more (p<0.05) than those on the other diets up to day 7. Body weight gain was highest (p<0.001) on the AP-SBM diet while birds on the CM-AP diet weighed the least at 7 d. Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, mortality, bone growth, visceral organ development, and activities of digestive enzymes were similar between the groups from hatch to 21 days of age. Results of the second sub-experiment showed that chicks preferred the CM-based diets to the SBM-based diets at 8 to 14 d (p<0.001) and 15 to 21 d (p<0.01) when given a choice. Overall, the birds were not affected by the nature of the starter diet although they tended to prefer the canola to soybean diets.

Abstract
Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) signalling shares several signal components with abscisic acid (ABA) signalling in guard cells. Cyclic adenosine 5'-diphosphoribose (cADPR) and cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) are second messengers in ABA-induced stomatal closure. In order to clarify involvement of cADPR and cGMP in MeJA-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana (Col-0), we investigated effects of an inhibitor of cADPR synthesis, nicotinamide (NA), and an inhibitor of cGMP synthesis, LY83583 (LY, 6-anilino-5,8-quinolinedione), on MeJA-induced stomatal closure. Treatment with NA and LY inhibited MeJA-induced stomatal closure. NA inhibited MeJA-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and nitric oxide (NO) production in guard cells. NA and LY suppressed transient elevations elicited by MeJA in cytosolic free Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]cyt) in guard cells. These results suggest that cADPR and cGMP positively function in [Ca(2+)]cyt elevation in MeJA-induced stomatal closure, are signalling components shared with ABA-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis, and that cADPR is required for MeJA-induced ROS accumulation and NO production in Arabidopsis guard cells.

Abstract
This cross sectional study was carried out from July 2011 to June 2012 in the Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College to diagnose etiology of diarrhea caused by Campylobacter species. A total of 200 clinically diagnosed diarrheal pediatric patients were included in this study. Among the 200 stool specimens evaluated, 23(11.5%) samples were positive for Campylobacter species, isolation rate was 15(65.2%) in upto 1 year age group and 08(34.7%) in more than 1 year age group. Among 23 positive cases, 20(86.95%) were C. jejuni and 03(13.05%) were C. coli. The prevalence of Campylobacter infection found in the present study was higher below 1 year age group and was very much close to other countries of this Sub continent.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) has extensive commercial and industrial use despite of its recognized as health hazard. The therapeutic application of garlic (Allium sativum) was investigated for preventing the toxic effect of lead (Pd) in lead exposed chickens. 350 commercial broiler chickens were grouped into five such as T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4consisting of 70 birds each where T0 served as control. T1 was provided with lead acetate at 100mg/kg body weight, T2 had 100mg/kg lead acetate + 1% garlic supplement, T3 was fed with 100mg/kg lead acetate + 2% garlic supplement and T4 had 100mg/kg lead acetate + 4% garlic supplement for 42 days. Garlic was found to be capable of elimination of lead (Pb). Analysis of variance statistically revealed that significant (P<0.01) lower level of live weight (g), carcass weight (g) and eviscerated fresh carcass weight (%) were 2015.26±49.73, 1124.45±11.67 and 60.63±3.18, respectively in the chickens in group T1 at 42nd day of treatment in comparison to other groups. All garlic treatment groups satisfactorily increased live weight and carcass weight. Following the application of dietary garlic, mean values of live weight (g), carcass weight (g) and eviscerated fresh carcass weight (%) were significantly (P<0.01) increased at 2156.63±74.52, 1455.85±9.21 and 63.96±2.18 in group T3. Feed conversion ratio showed non-significant differences between different groups, but the most significant (P<0.01) FCR values were recorded in T3 among the treatment groups. Abstract
Background: Persistent elevation of serum ALP is frequently encountered and can pose a diagnostic dilemma due to its association with a wide range of clinical conditions. However, the significance of ALP in these clinical conditions in routine practice is often underestimated or overrated. Objectives: This study was determined to assess the pattern of ALP with an aim to elucidate its clinical utility among hospitalized patients. Method & materials: The inpatients with high ALP level were enlisted & analysed between January to December 2012 excluding cases of (a) patients who have bone involvements with malignancies and (b) HIV-seropositive patients attending a tertiary care Hospital at Dhaka. Extremely high levels of ALP were defined as being more than 1000 U/L. These patients were divided into different groups according to their final diagnosis. Results: A total of 154 hospitalized patients with eligible medical records were identified (98 male and 56 female, mean age 36 years). Their ALP levels are ranging from 1,006 to 3,067 IU/L; very extreme values of > 3000 IU/L being rarely (only about 2%) documented. Patients with sepsis can have an extremely high alkaline phosphatase level (1,648.2 ± 328.4 IU/L) and a normal bilirubin. Conclusion: High serum ALP levels in hospitalized patients were commonly found in three major groups having obstructive biliary diseases, infiltrative liver disease and sepsis. A variety of other causes were also noted. This routine laboratory test should receive more attention in clinical decision-making than has previously been given. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and mechanisms of fluoroquinolone resistance in Shigella species isolated in Bangladesh and to compare with similar strains isolated in China. METHODS A total of 3789 Shigella isolates collected from Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of icddr,b, during 2004-2010 were analyzed for antibiotic susceptibility. Analysis of plasmids, plasmid-mediated quinolone-resistance genes, PFGE, and sequencing of genes of the quinolone-resistance-determining regions (QRDR) were conducted in representative strains isolated in Bangladesh and compared with strains isolated in Zhengding, China. In addition, the role of efflux-pump was studied by using the efflux-pump inhibitor carbonyl cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP). RESULTS Resistance to ciprofloxacin in Shigella species increased from 0% in 2004 to 44% in 2010 and S. flexneri was the predominant species. Of Shigella spp, ciprofloxacin resistant (CipR) strains were mostly found among S. flexneri (8.3%), followed by S. sonnei (1.5%). Within S. flexneri (n = 2181), 14.5% were resistance to ciprofloxacin of which serotype 2a was predominant (96%). MIC of ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin were 6-32 mg/L, 8-32 mg/L, and 8-24 mg/L, respectively in S. flexneri 2a isolates. Sequencing of QRDR genes of resistant isolates showed double mutations in gyrA gene (Ser83Leu, Asp87Asn/Gly) and single mutation in parC gene (Ser80Ile). A difference in amino acid substitution at position 87 was found between strains isolated in Bangladesh (Asp87Asn) and China (Asp87Gly) except for one. A novel mutation at position 211 (His→Tyr) in gyrA gene was detected only in the Bangladeshi strains. Susceptibility to ciprofloxacin was increased by the presence of CCCP indicating the involvement of energy dependent active efflux pumps. A single PFGE type was found in isolates from Bangladesh and China suggesting their genetic relatedness. CONCLUSIONS Emergence of fluoroquinolone resistance in Shigella undermines a major challenge in current treatment strategies which needs to be followed up by using empirical therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Giardia and Cryptosporidium are the pathogens which transmitted through contaminated soil and contaminated water are significant causes of diarrhea and nutritional disorders in institutional and community peoples. Children and immune compromise persons are more vulnerable for these infections. Both Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis were included in 2004 as WHO Neglected Disease. So this is a major public health problem in developing countries. The present study was carried out to detect the Giardia and Cryptosporidium from diarrheic or patient having loose stool by Direct Immunofluorescence assay. The study was conducted during July 20012 to February 2013 and the work was done in Mymensingh Medical College in the department of Microbiology and in Bangladesh Agricultural University in the department of Veterinary Medicine. A total of 100 loose stools were collected from school children of different area and hospital under sadar upazilla, Mymensingh. The detection of Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum showed the individual prevalence 8% and 4% respectively. The highest cyst/oocyst count was 85,000 and 1,000/gm of stool and the lowest being 100 and 50/gm of stool for Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis respectively. The detection rate of Giardia and Cryptosporidium by Immunofluorescence assay was relatively higher than the previous study done in Bangladesh and this was the first report from Bangladesh over human stool specimen using Immunofluorescence assay. So, Immunofluorescence assay could be adapted for rapid and accurate detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
