Abstract
It has been suggested that the functional diversity of growth hormone (GH) is related to its molecular complexity. Here we report a characterization of charge and mass variants of chicken growth hormone (cGH) through a variety of electrophoretic systems [nondenaturing (ND-PAGE), denaturing (SDS-PAGE), under reducing and nonreducing conditions, isoelectrofocusing (IEF), and bidimensional electrophoresis] followed by Western blot and immunostaining with a specific antibody directed against pure cGH. We also report the biological properties of two charge variants on two homologous assays. The studies were carried out with purified cGH and with fresh chicken pituitary extracts. Three charge variants were obtained by ND-PAGE (Rf = 0.23, 0.30, and 0.35), which showed the same molecular weight (26 kDa), while in IEF eight isoforms were observed, the most conspicuous being those with pI = 6.86, 7.5, 7.9, 8.05, and 8.18. In SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions four immunoreactive bands were observed: the monomer (26 kDa), a dimer (52 kDa), a fragment (16 kDa), and a minor band at 22 kDa. Higher MW variants were found under nonreducing conditions. Bidimensional analysis also showed several charge variants for the monomer and the dimer. Bioactivity of two charge variants (0.23 and 0.3) was evaluated with a lipolytic and an antilipolytic assay on chicken adipose tissue explants. It was shown that variant 0.23 was mainly lipolytic, in a dose-dependent response, but lacked antilipolytic effect. On the other hand, variant 0.30 did not show lipolytic effect but presented a clear antilipolytic activity.

Abstract
It was investigated the relationship between the mean arterial pressure values obtained through the Peñaz method (non invasive) with those obtained intraarterially (invasive) in patients under balanced general anesthesia with the aim of establishing the influence of the different anesthetic stages upon such relationship. Anesthesia was induced with thiopental and anesthetic maintenance with halothane and intermittent doses of fentanyl and a muscle relaxant. EKG, servo-plethysmograph, central venous and radial artery catheter, were placed in each patient thus obtaining in this manner HR, FAP, CVP and IAP readings. The relationship between finger arterial pressure and intraarterial pressure values was high in the different anesthetic stages. It was concluded that the readings obtained with the Peñaz method are not significantly affected by balanced general anesthesia.

Abstract
The in vitro attachment between Escherichia coli and the human spermatozoon was studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and ultracytochemistry. Samples from estrogenized cervical mucus columns containing migrating spermatozoa revealed two types of contact areas: Type I corresponded to the interaction of the bacterial fimbriae with the spermatozoal surface, and Type II, to the intermingling of the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell glycocalyx. In both types of associations, the attachment area was lanthanum positive and displayed glycoconjugates. These types of intercellular contacts could represent the morphological basis of a mechanism by which bacteria are attached to spermatozoa and are consequently transported to the upper female genital tract.

Abstract
To assess whether the programs of diabetologic education (PDE) are effective to improve metabolic control in diabetes mellitus, depending on their inclusion in an overall therapeutic program and on the setting where they are imparted (hospital versus primary care center, PCC), we evaluated the changes in the HbA1 values in 230 insulin-treated diabetic patients, after receiving a PDE in a PCC (group A; n = 88) or as hospital inpatients (group B; n = 72) or outpatients (group C; n = 50). The remaining 20 patients (group D) received the same PDE, but their treatment did not depend on our Unit. The initial mean HbA1 levels were significantly reduced 3, 6 and 9 months after the PDE in group A patients (10.6% vs 9.6%, p less than 0.05; vs 9.4%, p less than 0.02; vs 9.1%, p less than 0.01), in group B patients (10.0% vs 9.5%, p less than 0.05; vs 9.1%, p less than 0.05; vs 9.0%, p less than 0.05) and group C patients (10.1% vs 9.5%, p less than 0.05; vs 9.1%, p less than 0.02; vs 8.9, p less than 0.01); however, they did not significantly change in group D patients (10.3% vs 10.7%, vs 10.3%, and vs 10.0%). Mean HbA1 in months 3, 6 and 9 were not different between groups A, B and C, but they were lower (p less than 0.05) than in group D. Our results confirm that PDE and treatment are effective to improve metabolic control in diabetic patients, whereas diabetological education alone is not useful. The place where PDE is given is not determinant for its effectiveness.

Abstract
The effects of alphaxalone-alphadolone acetate (27.07 microM/kg-7.68 microM/kg) on neurologic injury following acute cerebral ischemia induced by an 8 min cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) were investigated in cats through the analysis of neurological deficit scores and brain electrical activity; i.e., electroencephalogram (EEG) from parieto-occipital cortices and EEG and multiunit activity (MUA) from mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF). The CRA resulted from electrically induced cardiac arrest and stopping of mechanical ventilation in paralyzed cats which were successfully resuscitated within the immediate 4 min after the end of CRA. Two groups of cats were studied: I. Untreated, which received saline iv; II. Treated, which received alphaxalone-alphadolone acetate iv, 7-9 min after the end of CRA. Neuromuscular blockade and mechanical ventilation were maintained until 8 h following the CRA; then the cats were allowed to recover spontaneous respiratory activity. EEG phenomena were different in untreated and treated cats during this immediate post-arrest period. The former showed rhythmic bursts of fast (12-20 Hz) EEG activity at 1-2 sec intervals from 15-20 min until 3-4 h after the CRA, abundant spikes and delta-like waves. By contrast, administration of alphaxalone-alphadolone acetate resulted in burst suppression EEG pattern during 1 h. Progressive recovery of background EEG activity occurred afterwards. MUA from MRF disappeared during the CRA, however 6 h later the mean MUA frequency in untreated cats ranged between 32-46% and in treated cats 18-27% of their control mean frequencies during paradoxical sleep (100%). Daily electrographic records were performed in all the cats during quiet attentive behavior at each of the five days following the CRA. Significant differences were found in the frequency distributions of MUA from MRF (1st day, p less than 0.01; 5th day, p less than 0.01) as well as in the cortical EEG waves (1st day, p less than 0.01; 5th day, p less than 0.05) before and after the CRA in the untreated group. A wide dispersion of MUA values, and increased proportions of delta and theta-like waves and spindle bursts, besides a significantly high (p less than 0.001) number of spikes occurred in these EEG records the days following the CRA. The frequency distributions of MUA and EEG did not significantly differ before and after the CRA in the treated group; however, a significantly high (p less than 0.05) number of spikes was found in treated cats following the CRA.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
A familial bleeding disorder characterized by an association of Type IIB von Willebrand's disease (vWD) with a complex thrombocytopenic thrombocytopathy is described in two patients from the same generation. Findings typical of type IIB vWD included enhanced ristocetin-induced binding of patient von Willebrand factor (vWF) to platelets of patients and normal individuals in association with the absence of larger multimers from plasma. Abnormalities in platelet function included deficient platelet aggregation to ADP, collagen, epinephrine, and arachidonic acid; and defective release of 14C-serotonin, vWF, and platelet factor 4 (PF4) in response to thrombin, collagen, or ADP. Platelet factor 4 and platelet vWF were decreased when measured per mg of total platelet protein. In addition, the binding of normal vWF to patient platelets stimulated with thrombin was decreased. Platelet size was increased with a very heterogeneous distribution width. Electron microscopic evaluation showed giant platelets with dense and alpha bodies present. The platelet count was borderline or slightly decreased in the resting state and declined to frankly thrombocytopenic levels at the time of acute bleeding episodes; this state was associated with the presence of platelet aggregates in blood smears.

Abstract
Human circadian rhythms were once thought to be insensitive to light, with synchronization to the 24-hour day accomplished either through social contacts or the sleep-wake schedule. Yet the demonstration of an intensity-dependent neuroendocrine response to bright light has led to renewed consideration of light as a possible synchronizer of the human circadian pacemaker. In a laboratory study, the output of the circadian pacemaker of an elderly woman was monitored before and after exposure to 4 hours of bright light for seven consecutive evenings, and before and after a control study in ordinary room light while her sleep-wake schedule and social contacts remained unchanged. The exposure to bright light in the evening induced a 6-hour delay shift of her circadian pacemaker, as indicated by recordings of body temperature and cortisol secretion. The unexpected magnitude, rapidity, and stability of the shift challenge existing concepts regarding circadian phase-resetting capacity in man and suggest that exposure to bright light can indeed reset the human circadian pacemaker, which controls daily variations in physiologic, behavioral, and cognitive function.

Abstract
The effect of fentanyl (a morphine agonist) and naloxone (a morphine antagonist) on early and late components of somatic (SEP)- and auditory (AEP)-evoked potentials was studied in patients undergoing minor surgical procedures, in which these compounds were used in producing and regulating a state of neuroleptanalgesia. Fentanyl (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 micrograms/kg), naloxone (1.5 and 3.0 micrograms/kg) and isotonic saline (for comparative purposes) were injected just before surgery, intravenously through a catheter and following a single blind procedure and three different pharmacological paradigms with four consecutive conditions each: (1) Initial baseline (C), first saline (S), second saline (S') and late baseline (C'). (2) C, First fentanyl (F), second naloxone (N') and C. (3) C, First naloxone (N), second fentanyl (F') and C'. Special care was taken in controlling the constancy of the muscular and cochlear receptor activation concomitant to somatic-evoked potentials and auditory-evoked potentials, determined by the amplitude of the muscular response at the tenar muscles (MP) and component I of the brain stem potentials ( ABSP ). Evaluation by the patients pain, topognoses and hearing and other somatic and autonomic indicators of the level of the analgesic response were also controlled. Fentanyl significantly reduced, while naloxone increased, the amplitude of late components P150 of somatic-evoked potentials and auditory-evoked potentials. Concomitantly, fentanyl increased, while naloxone decreased, the spatial threshold (two point discrimination test) at finger tip and arm. These effects were observed in patients taking various doses, although they were more consistent with larger doses of these compounds.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze 1) the prevalence of traumatic injuries to permanent incisors and canines, 2) their distribution according to type, 3) etiology, 4) place of occurrence, and 5) location of trauma, in a population sample of schoolchildren from the Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbean Archipelago. The sample consisted of 596 children aged 7-14 years enrolled in 21 public and private schools from the city of San Pedro de Macoris, in the southeastern part of the country. This sample represents 10.8% of the schoolchildren of the city. The prevalence of injuries was 18.1% (17.4% in boys and 18.8% in girls). The largest number of injuries was found in the 14-year-old children followed by the 12-year-olds. Significantly, girls had a larger number of actual teeth injured than boys (P less than 0.05). The most common type of injury in both sexes was the enamel fracture (51.1%) followed by concussions (25.6%). Significantly, more girls suffered concussions than boys (P less than 0.05). The most common cause of injury in both sexes was falling against an object (60.0% in boys and 42.6% in girls). The most frequent place of occurrence of trauma, in both sexes, was at home (34.1%), followed by outside of home (19.3%) and at school (12.5%). The teeth most commonly injured were the maxillary central incisors (63.9%). Girls presented significantly more mandibular lateral incisors injured than boys (P less than 0.02).

Abstract
During measles infection in human beings, depression of cellular immunity appears. The authors studied several groups of children with measles complaining of various degrees of malnutrition in terms of rosette forming lymphocytes in peripheral blood; marked reduction of T lymphocytes were seen in all of the groups during the acute stage of the disease, that persisted up to two weeks after the exanthematous stage. When comparison was established of eutrophic and 1st degree malnourished children with those affected with 3rd degree malnutrition, differences were found in the recovery of the number of rosett-E forming cells.

Abstract
The usefulness of metisoprinol was evaluated by a double blind study and at random in the treatment of mild infectious hepatitis in a group of 42 children. Twenty-one patients were given the drug at the dose of 50 mg/kg/day, divided t.i.d., by mouth and for 12 days. The other twenty-one patients made up the control group and were given placebo. No modifications nor clinical differences were found in the parameters evaluated; laboratory results were also negative in the studies carried out that might be attributed to the administration of the drug.
