A mathematical model of the controlled plant of the respiratory system

Ability to predict the dynamic response of oxygen, carbon dioxide tensions, and pH in blood and tissues to abrupt changes in ventilation is important in the mathematical modeling of the respiratory system. In this study, the controlled plant (the amount and distribution of O(2) and CO(2)) of the respiratory system is modeled. Although the body tissues are divided into a finite number of "compartments" (three tissue groups), in contrast to earlier models, the blood and tissue gas tensions within each compartment are considered to be continuously distributed in time and in one spatial coordinate. The mass conservation equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide involved in the blood-tissue gas exchange are described by a set of partial differential equations which take into account convection of O(2) and CO(2) caused by the flow of blood as well as diffusion due to local tension gradients. Nonlinear algebraic equations for the dissociation curves, which take into account the Haldane and Bohr effects in blood, are used to obtain the relationships between concentrations and partial pressures. Time-variable delays caused by the arterial and venous transport of the respiratory gases are also included. The model so constructed successfully reproduced actual O(2) and CO(2) tensions in arterial blood, and in muscle venous and mixed venous blood when ventilation was abruptly changed.

Catecholamine secretion by the adrenal medulla of the foetal and new-born foal

1. The content and output of adrenaline and noradrenaline from the equine adrenal medulla has been investigated under different conditions in foetuses, foals and adult mares.2. In the foetus only small amounts of both amines were secreted in response to stimulation of the peripheral ends of the splanchnic nerves to the gland; during anoxia the adrenal discharge was far greater and was independent of any nervous mechanism.3. Whereas in the ruminant a direct adrenal response to low P(O2) is confined to the noradrenaline cells during foetal life only, the adrenal medulla of the foetal foal secreted both adrenaline and noradrenaline during asphyxia, and the direct response persisted for some days after birth. Noradrenaline was the amine predominantly released during asphyxia in the foetus.4. Catecholamine output from the equine adrenal medulla changed with age, in that there was a gradual increase in both the absolute and relative amount of adrenaline released, irrespective of the stimulus applied, although at any given stage of development a higher proportion of adrenaline was secreted in response to stimulation of the splanchnic nerves than during anoxia.5. The relative proportions of the two amines in the effluent blood bore little resemblance to those found in the glands, removed after prolonged asphyxia, in either foetuses or foals. Preliminary observations have indicated that more noradrenaline is present in the glands when the foetus remains relatively undisturbed within the uterus.6. The possible significance of the larger adrenal response to asphyxia in the foetal foal in comparison with other species is discussed in relation to the development of the innervation and the growth of the adrenal cortex.

An electron microscopic and radioautographic study on experimental kernicterus. II. Bilirubin movement within neurons and release of waste products via astroglia

Response of the neurons to bilirubin in asphyxiated newborn rabbits was studied in vivo with the use of the electron microscope and radioautographic technics. A morphologic basis for the mode of intraneuronal bilirubin movement in kernicterus has been established. The absorbed bilirubin had ready access to the Golgi complex from the dendrite through the neurotubules by a mechanism of centripetal dendroplasmic flow. The endoplasmic reticulum provided a subcellular canalicular system for the directed passage from the Golgi complex to the nuclear membrane. Proximodistal flow of bilirubin in the axoplasm caused spotty destruction of axons. The release of waste products from the affected neurons toward the capillaries is very likely an effect of reverse transastroglial transport.
