Abstract
Bismuth, in spite of its low cost and low toxicity, has found limited application in organic synthesis. Although the photoactivity of Bi(iii) salts has been well studied, this has not been effectively exploited in photocatalysis. To date, only a single report exists for the Bi-based photocatalysis, wherein carbon centered radicals were generated using ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) on bismuth. In this regard, expanding the horizon of bismuth LMCT catalysis for the generation of heteroatom centered radicals, we hereby report an efficient radical phosphonylation using BiCl3 as the LMCT catalyst. Phosphonyl radicals generated via visible-light induced LMCT of BiCl3 were subjected to a variety of transformations like alkylation, amination, alkynylation and cascade cyclizations. The catalytic system tolerated a wide range of substrate classes, delivering excellent yields of the scaffolds. The reactions were scalable and required low catalytic loading of bismuth. Detailed mechanistic studies were carried out to probe the reaction mechanism. Diverse radical phosphonylations leading to the formation of sp3-C-P, sp2-C-P, sp-C-P, and P-N bonds in the current work present the candidacy of bismuth as a versatile photocatalyst for small molecule activation.

Abstract
We hereby report a highly diastereoselective synthesis of chalcogenated azaspirotricycles via a one-pot Ugi/spirocyclization/aza-Michael addition sequence. The reaction proceeds via a key visible light mediated spirocyclization step under mild, metal-free and energy efficient conditions. A variety of complex sulfenylated and selenylated azaspirotricycles were obtained in good yields. The reaction was found to be scalable and preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that the spirocyclization step proceeds via radical intermediates.

Abstract
Till date, the ipso-cyclization of propiolamides is limited to provide azaspiro[4,5]decatrienones. Herein, we present the first example of ipso-carbocyclization, leading to azaspiro[5,5]-undecatrienones from N-propiolyl-2-arylbenzimidazoles, involving both the radical-based and electrophilic reactions. This report establishes an access to a wide range of chalcogenated (SCN/SCF3/SePh) benzimidazo-fused azaspiro[5,5]undecatrienones in good yields.

Abstract
The highly efficient construction of complicated heterocyclic frameworks in an atom- and step-economic manner is still one of the cores of synthetic chemistry. Dearomatization reactions show the unique advantage for the construction of functionalized heterocycles and have attracted widespread attention over the past two decades. The metal-free approach has proved to be a green and sustainable paradigm for the synthesis of spirocyclic, polycyclic and heterocyclic scaffolds, which are widely present in natural products and bioactive molecules. In this review, the advances in the recent six years (2017-2023) in metal-free dearomatization reactions are highlighted. Emphasis is placed on developments in the field of organo-catalyzed dearomatization reactions, oxidative dearomatization reactions, Brønsted acid- or base-promoted dearomatization reactions, photoredox-catalyzed dearomatization reactions, and electrochemical oxidation dearomatization reactions.

Abstract
An approach for the assembly of phenanthrone derivatives bearing all carbon quaternary centres has been developed through visible light-promoted tandem sulfonylation/intramolecular-arylation of biaryl enones with sulfonyl chlorides. A series of sulfonylated 10,10-dialkylphenanthrones were obtained in good yields. In addition, the approach has been extended to thiotrifluoromethyl (SCF3) and thiocyanato (SCN) radicals to obtain the corresponding phenanthrones under oxidative conditions. The synthetic utility was also illustrated by the scalability and further transformations of the product.

Abstract
By employing a chiral bifunctional phosphine ligand, a gold(I)-catalyzed efficient and highly enantioselective dearomatization of phenols is achieved via versatile metal-ligand cooperation. The reaction is proven to be remarkably general in scope, permitting substitutions at all four remaining benzene positions, accommodating electron-withdrawing groups including strongly deactivating nitro, and allowing carbon-based groups of varying steric bulk including tert-butyl at the alkyne terminus. Moreover, besides N-(o-hydroxyphenyl)alkynamides, the corresponding ynoates and ynones are all suitable substrates. Spirocyclohexadienone-pyrrol-2-ones, spirocyclohexadienone-butenolides, and spirocyclohexadenone-cyclopentenones are formed in yields up to 99 % and with ee up to 99 %.

Abstract
A variety of acrylamides holding an unactivated N-benzyl group underwent dearomative ipso-cyclization induced by sulfur-centered radicals (SCN/ SCF3/ SO2Ar) in the presence of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as the oxidant to furnish azaspirocycles in good yields. This is the first report on ipso-dearomatization of N-benzyl acrylamides that proceeds without a substituent at the para-position of the aromatic ring. The developed conditions are also found to be suitable for substrates holding substituents such as F, NO2, OMe, OH, and OAc at the para-position. The reaction features water as the source of oxygen, is compatible with a variety of functional groups, and proceeds in a short time.

Abstract
An efficient and practical SO2 insertion protocol of NH-sulfoximines with aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates and DABSO toward N-sulfonyl sulfoximines has been developed under mildly basic conditions. This transformation features easy operation, readily available substrates, and mild conditions. A tentative mechanism is proposed, which indicates that the aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates would be radical donors under standard reaction conditions. The aryl radical produced in situ from diazonium salts would be trapped by SO2 to generate an arylsulfonyl radical and then undergo further transformation to generate the final N-sulfonyl sulfoximines.

Abstract
Herein, we report a reductive hydrazo-sulfonylative difunctionalization cascade of alkynyl cyclohexadienones employing PhTeTePh as an uncommon reducing agent. Diphenyl ditelluride is a commercially available solid with a good solubility profile in most organic solvents, and this is the first report illustrating it as a reducing agent. The protocol afforded a variety of difunctionalized dihydrochromenones and dihydrobenzofuranones in good yields under relatively mild conditions. The reactions were scalable, and mechanistic studies were conducted to probe the reaction mechanism. Additionally, photophysical studies of the products were carried out, which revealed that they had significant absorption (400-450 nm) and emission (520-570 nm) in the visible region.

Abstract
Dearomatization reactions involving radical cyclizations can facilitate the synthesis of complex polycyclic systems that find applications in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. Here we employ redox-neutral photocatalysis to affect a radical spirocyclization that transforms biaryls into spirocyclic cyclohexadienones under mild reaction conditions. In a departure from previously reported methods, our work demonstrates the polarity mismatched addition of a nucleophilic radical to an electron rich arene, and allows the regioselective synthesis of 2,4- or 2,5-cyclohexadienones with broad functional group tolerance. By transforming biaryls into spirocycles, our methodology accesses underexplored three-dimensional chemical space, and provides an efficient means of creating quaternary spirocenters that we apply to the first synthesis of the cytotoxic plant metabolite denobilone A.

Abstract
Structurally novel 2-azaspiro[4.5]deca-1,6,9-trien-8-ones were synthesized from N-(2-propyn-1-yl) amides and 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzenes by a tandem method consisting of a Tf2O-promoted amide activation and a TfOH-promoted Friedel-Crafts ipso-cyclization. The method offered the first example of using N-(2-propyn-1-yl) amides as substrates in both Tf2O-promoted secondary amide activation and the synthesis of azaspiro[4.5]deca-6,9-diene-8-ones.

Abstract
An efficient and straightforward synthesis of diversified seleno-azaspiro-2,5-cyclohexadienones from N-(4-methoxy aryl)propiolamides using elemental selenium and boronic acids has been demonstrated. The reaction proceeds through silver-catalyzed oxidative dearomatization in the presence of potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as the oxidant. Further, this approach was extended to N-(4-methoxy aryl)propiolates and biaryl ynones to access the corresponding selenylated oxospiro-2,5-cyclohexadienones and spiro[5,5]trienones, respectively. The present three-component method offers the diverse substitutions on selenium involving two C-Se and one C-C bond formations.

Abstract
We hereby disclose, a visible light mediated addition of sulfenyl radicals to trialkyl phosphites to access functionalized phosphorothioates. The use of cheap and readily available Eosin Y as a photocatalyst under mild energy efficient conditions bypassing the use of external oxidants forms the chief highlight of the work. The protocol is scalable and mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds through an ionic-Arbuzov like pathway from phosphoranyl radicals.

Abstract
Visible-light-promoted cascade radical cyclization for the synthesis of sulfonylated benzimidazo/indolo[2,1-a]iso-quinolin-6(5H)-ones has been reported. The reaction provides transition-metal-free and expeditious access to sulfonylated polyaromatics. The use of sodium metabisulfite as a SO2 surrogate and the rapid generation of molecular complexity using a three-component photochemical protocol are the salient features of this reaction manifold.

Abstract
A metal- and oxidant-free route for affording azaspiro[4.5]deca-6,9-diene-3,8-dione via photomediated iodinated spirocyclization of N-(4-methoxybenzyl) propiolamide has been developed. The reaction underwent a radical addition/ipso-cyclization/dearomatization process at room temperature and successfully constructed C-C and C-I bonds. This green and convenient approach could be generally expanded to produce a range of iodinated spirocyclization products in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
We hereby report a highly regio- and diastereoselective arylsulfonylation-radical cyclization-selenylation cascade of alkynyl cyclohexadienones for the facile synthesis of highly functionalized dihydrochromenones. The protocol utilizes aryldiazonium salts as aryl partners and DABSO as a benign SO2 source and also as a redox mediator. Additionally, we also developed a visible light mediated protocol wherein diaryliodonium salts were used as the aryl partners at room temperature.

Abstract
We report a cascaded oxidative sulfonylation of N-propargylamine via a three-component coupling reaction using DABCO·(SO2)2 (DABSO). 3-Arylsulfonylquinolines were obtained by mixing diazonium tetrafluoroborate, N-propargylamine, and DABSO under argon atmosphere in dichloroethane (DCE) for 1 h. In a radical pathway, DABSO was utilized as the sulfone source and an oxidant in this radical-mediated cascaded reaction.

Abstract
A simple and low-cost tandem sulfonylation/cyclization of 1,5-diene, aryldiazonium salt, and DABCO·(SO2)2 is disclosed. This base-promoted multicomponent reaction can provide a "green" and economic synthesis of sulfonylated pyrrolidones under transition-metal-free and moisture/oxygen-insensitive reaction conditions, thus delivering a wide range of sulfonylated pyrrolidones in moderate to high yields with excellent functional group compatibility. A plausible mechanism involving a radical process is proposed, which demonstrates highly chemoselective trapping of the aryl radical with "SO2" species, and a regioselective sulfonylation/cyclization protocol in this reaction.

Abstract
A practical synthetic route to construct a variety of 3-benzyl spiro[4,5]trienones was developed via transition-metal Cu/Ag-catalyzed oxidative ipso-annulation of activated alkynes with unactivated toluenes using TBPB as an oxidant under microwave irradiation. This method allows the formation of two carbon-carbon bonds and one carbon-oxygen bond in a single reaction through a sequence of C-H oxidative coupling, ipso-carbocyclization and dearomatization. The advantages of this protocol are its operational simplicity and broad substrate scope, and the ability to afford the desired products in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
The multiple C-H bonds of biaryl ynones render the 6-exo-trig regioselective C-H activation dearomatization to spiro[5.5]trienones challenging since the competing reactions of C-H bonds on Ar1 or the ortho-C-H bonds on Ar3 may result in 5-exo-trig cyclization to indenones or 6-exo-trig ortho-dearomatization, respectively. We here report an unprecendented dearomatization of biaryl ynones with aldehydes via double C-H functionalization where a regiospecific remote unactivated para-C-H functionalization of biaryl ynones efficiently furnishes acylated spiro[5.5]trienones. This cascade cyclization features a green catalyst and solvent and high atom- and step-economy.

Abstract
A three-component sulfonylative spirocyclization of indolyl ynones with aryldiazonium salts and a sulfur dioxide surrogate of DABCO·(SO2)2 has been developed, providing a range of sulfonated spiro[cyclopentenone-1,3'-indoles] in moderate to good yields. This transformation was initiated by an in situ generated arylsulfonyl radical and proceeded efficiently under metal-free conditions, involving a radical-induced dearomative cascade cyclization accompanied by the insertion of sulfur dioxide. This protocol provides an efficient and convenient method to access sulfonated spiroindolenines, and tolerant various functional groups.

Abstract
Organic photochemistry and electrochemistry currently receive tremendous attention in organic synthesis as both techniques enable the reagent-less activation of organic molecules without using expensive and hazardous redox reagents. The incorporation of SO2 into organic molecules is a relatively modern research topic, which likewise gains immense popularity since the discovery of the SO2 surrogate DABSO. Sulfur-containing organic molecules are omnipresent in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This review covers the recent progress in electrochemical and photochemical methodologies for the incorporation and uses of SO2 in the synthesis of value-added compounds. Additionally, different work techniques are demonstrated for the synthetic application of SO2.

Abstract
As a privileged motif, tetrazoles can be widely found in pharmaceuticals and materials science. Herein, a five-component reaction of cycloketone oxime esters, alkynes, DABCO·(SO2)2, and two molecules of trimethylsilyl azide under iron catalysis is developed, giving rise to a range of cyano-containing sulfonylated tetrazoles in moderate to good yields. This multicomponent reaction exhibits excellent selectivity and enables the formation of multiple new chemical bonds in one pot. A possible mechanism involving azidosulfonylation of alkynes, C-C bond cleavage of both cycloketone oxime esters and alkynes, and [3 + 2] cycloaddition of trimethylsilyl azide and the nitrilium cation intermediate is proposed. Additionally, the potential of terminal alkynes acting as powerful synthons for the synthesis of tetrazoles in a radical initiated process is demonstrated for the first time. High-value tetrazole motifs were synthesized via a five-component reaction Fixing sulfur dioxide into tetrazole molecules under mild conditions Low-cost iron catalyst initiated the transformation Excellent selectivity with the formation of multiple new chemical bonds
