Abstract
Arthrospira platensis has been utilized as a food source since ancient times due to its rich nutrient profile. In recent years, its popularity as a dietary supplement has soared, especially due to the presence of a water-soluble phycobiliprotein, C-phycocyanin C (C-PC), which is abundant and notable for its fluorescent properties. C-PC contains the chromophore phycocyanobilin B (PCB-B), a tetrapyrrole molecule, that is why it plays a dual role as a food colorant and as nutraceutical. However, comprehensive studies have mostly evaluated C-PC's broader health-promoting properties, particularly its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, which are linked to its ability to contrast oxidative stress and related pathological conditions. That is why this review explores recent advancements in optimizing culture conditions to enhance C-PC and PCB-B production, with a particular emphasis on novel extraction and purification techniques that increase yield and bioactivity. This focus on efficient production methods is crucial for expanding the commercial and therapeutic applications of C-PC, contributing to its growing relevance in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The emergence of antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae necessitates the discovery of novel therapeutic agents. This study investigated the antimicrobial potential of green-synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) fabricated using Arthrospira platensis extract. Characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of functional groups such as ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids in the capping agents, suggesting their role in AuNP stabilization. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the formation of rod-shaped AuNPs with a mean diameter of 134.8 nm, as determined by dynamic light scattering, and a zeta potential of -27.2 mV, indicating good colloidal stability. The synthesized AuNPs exhibited potent antibacterial activity against S. pneumoniae, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12 μg/mL, surpassing the efficacy of the control antibiotic, tigecycline. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action, an untargeted metabolomic analysis of the A. platensis extract was performed, identifying 26 potential bioactive compounds belonging to diverse chemical classes. In silico studies focused on molecular docking simulations revealed that compound 22 exhibited a strong binding affinity to S. pneumoniae topoisomerase IV, a critical enzyme for bacterial DNA replication. Molecular dynamics simulations further validated the stability of this protein-ligand complex. These findings collectively highlight the promising antimicrobial potential of A. platensis-derived AuNPs and their constituent compounds, warranting further investigation for the development of novel anti-pneumococcal therapeutics.

Abstract
C-phycocyanin (C-PC) is the main component of water-soluble light-harvesting complexes (phycobilisomes, PBS) of cyanobacteria. PBS are involved in the absorption of quantum energy and the transfer of electronic excitation energy to the photosystems. A specific environment of C-PC chromophoric groups is provided by the protein matrix structure including protein-protein contacts between different subunits. Registration of C-PC spectral characteristics and the fluorescence anisotropy decay have revealed a significant pH influence on the chromophore microenvironment: at pH 5.0, a chromophore is more significantly interacts with the solvent, whereas at pH 9.0 the chromophore microenvironment becomes more viscous. Conformations of chromophores and the C-PC protein matrix have been studied by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. A decrease in the medium pH results in changes in the secondary structure either the C-PC apoproteins and chromophores, the last one adopts a more folded conformation.

Abstract
Although wastewater with high ammonia concentration is an ideal alternative environment for microalgae cultivation, high ammonia concentrations are toxic to microalgae and inhibit microalgae growth. In this study, the ammonia responses of four widely used microalgae species were investigated. Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella minutissima, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Arthrospira platensis were grown in batch reactors maintained at seven different NH4Cl concentrations at a constant pH of 8. Growth and nitrogen removal kinetics were monitored. IC50 values for the mentioned species were found as 34.82 mg-FA/L, 30.17 mg-FA/L, 27.2 mg-FA/L and 44.44 mg-FA/L, respectively, while specific growth rates for different ammonia concentrations ranged between 0.148 and 1.271 d-1. C. vulgaris demonstrated the highest biomass growth under an ammonia concentration of 1700.95 mg/L. The highest removal of nitrogen was observed for A. platensis with an efficiency of 99.1%. The results showed that all tested species could grow without inhibition in ammonia levels comparable to those found in municipal wastewater. Furthermore, it has been concluded that species C. vulgaris and A. platensis can tolerate high ammonia levels similar to those found in high strength wastewaters.

Abstract
The red algae Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis is extensively cultivated at high densities, leading to significant increases in regional seawater pH due to its photosynthetic removal of inorganic carbon. We conducted a study on G. lemaneiformis cultured under various pH conditions (normal pH, pH 9.3, and pH 9.6) and light levels (dark and 100 μmol photons m-2 s-1) to investigate how high pH seawater environments affect the metabolic processes of G. lemaneiformis. The high pH did not directly damage the photosynthetic light reactions or the Calvin cycle. Instead, the observed reduction in photosynthetic rates was primarily due to CO2 limitation. However, under illuminated conditions, a high pH environment leads to a decrease in electron transport efficiency (ETo/RC) and reaction center density (RC/CSo), while simultaneously increasing the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Under illuminated conditions, the limitation of inhibit the photosynthetic electron transport process, leading to energy imbalance and excessive production of reactive oxygen species, which in turn resulted in lipid peroxidation of the cell membrane. This might be one of the inducing factors responsible for the bleaching in sea-farmed G. lemaneiformis plants.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an environmentally-safe algaecide used to control harmful algal blooms and as a disinfectant in various domestic and industrial applications. It is produced naturally in sunny-water or as a by-product during growth, and metabolism of photosynthetic organisms. To assess the impact of H2O2 on Arthrospira platensis, several biochemical components, and antioxidant enzymes were analysed. The growth and biomass of A. platensis were decreased under the effect of H2O2. Whereas, the concentration up to 40 μM H2O2 non-significantly induced (at P < 0.05) the Chl a, C-phycocyanin (C-PC), total phycobiliprotein (PBP), and the radical scavenging activity of A. platensis. The half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50) for H2O2 were 57, 65, and 74 μM H2O2 with regards to the biomass yield, Chl a, and C-PC content, respectively. While, the total soluble protein, and soluble carbohydrates contents were significantly induced. However, the higher concentrations (60 and 80 μM) were lethal to these components, in parallel to the initiation of the lipid peroxidation process. Surprisingly, the carotenoids content was non-significantly increased by H2O2. Despite the relative consistency of catalase (CAT), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes were boosted by all of the tested concentrations of H2O2. The relative transcript abundance of selected regulatory genes was also investigated. Except for the highest dose (80 μM), the tested concentrations had almost inhibitory effect on the relative transcripts of heat shock protein (HSP90), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), delta-9 desaturase (desC), iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and the Rubisco (the large subunit, rbcL) genes. The results demonstrated the importance of the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants for the cumulative tolerance of A. platensis.

Abstract
The effects of different salt concentrations on the growth, aroma and quality parameters of P. tricornutum and S. platensis were investigated for the first time.Salt contents were 15, 25, 30 and 35‰ for the P. tricornutum and 20, 25, 30 and 35‰ for the S. platensis culture. Aroma compounds were analyzed by HS-SPME-GC/MS while the organic acid and sugar composition were studied by HPLC-PDA-RID.The main amino acids were glutamic acid (6.24-12.96 mg/100 g) and alanine (3.67-13.65 mg/100 g) while the prevailing sugars were sucrose (229-1099 mg/100 g) and glucose (192-2322 mg/100 g) in the P. tricornutum and S. platensis samples.The most prevailing aroma compound was acetic acid (113 µg/kg) in the P. tricornutum samples and heptadecane (36941 µg/kg) in the S. platensis samples.A significant reduction was found in the amount of aroma compounds, amino acids, sugars and organic acids with increasing salt concentration.The study results are valuable for producing high-quality and flavorful P. tricornutum and S. platensis products.

Abstract
Though the biological treatment employing bacterial strains has wide application in effluent treatment plant, it has got several limitations. Researches hence while looking for alternative biological organisms that can be used for secondary treatment came up with the idea of using microalgae. Since then, a large number of microalgal/cyanobacterial strains have been identified that can efficiently remove pollutants from wastewater. Some researchers also found out that the algal biomass not only acts as a carbon sink by taking up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and giving oxygen but also is a renewable source of several value-added products that can be extracted from it for the commercial use. In this work, the cleaning effect of different species of microalgae/cyanobacteria on wastewater from varied sources along with the value-added products obtained from the algal biomass as observed by researchers during the past few years are reviewed. While a number of review works in the field of phycoremediation technology was reported in literature, a comprehensive study on phycoremediation of wastewater from different industries and household individually is limited. In the present review work, the efficiency of diverse microalgal/cyanobacterial strains in treatment of wide range of industrial effluents along with municipal wastewater having multi-pollutants has been critically reviewed.

Abstract
Phycobiliproteins are photosynthetic light-harvesting pigments isolated from microalgae with fluorescent, colorimetric and biological properties, making them a potential commodity in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. Hence, improving their metabolic yield is of great interest. In this regard, the present review aimed, first, to provide a detailed and thorough overview of the optimization of culture media elements, as well as various physical parameters, to improve the large-scale manufacturing of such bioactive molecules. The second section of the review offers systematic, deep and detailed data about the current main features of phycobiliproteins. In the ultimate section, the health and nutritional claims related to these bioactive pigments, explaining their noticeable potential for biotechnological uses in various fields, are examined.

Abstract
Phycobiliproteins are light-harvesting complexes found mainly in cyanobacteria and red algae, playing a key role in photosynthesis. They are extensively applied in food, cosmetics, and biomedical industry due to bright color, unique fluorescence characteristics and diverse physiological activities. They have received much attention in the past few decades because of their green and sustainable production, safe application, and functional diversity. This work aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of parameters affecting the whole bioprocess with a special focus on the extraction and purification, which directly determines the application of phycobiliproteins. Food grade phycobiliproteins are easy to prepare, whereas analytical grade phycobiliproteins are extremely complex and costly to produce. Most phycobiliproteins are denatured and inactivated at high temperatures, severely limiting their application. Inspired by recent advances, future perspectives are put forward, including (1) the mutagenesis and screening of algal strains for higher phycobiliprotein productivity, (2) the application of omics and genetic engineering for stronger phycobiliprotein stability, and (3) the utilization of synthetic biology and heterologous expression systems for easier phycobiliprotein isolation. This review will give a reference for exploring more phycobiliproteins for food and health application development.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an unprecedented increase in the demand for fermented dairy products due to medical recommendations and lifestyle preferences. Cultured buttermilk, as an ancient fermented dairy beverage, is an appropriate product choice in this context. This study presents a novel cultured buttermilk formulated by fortification with high protein microalgae Spirulina platensis, thus making it valuable and attractive because of its antioxidant properties. The fermentation process, nutraceutical properties, and sensory characteristics of developed cultured buttermilk with various concentrations of Spirulina (0.25, 0.5, and 1%) were compared with the control sample (0% Spirulina buttermilk). Different concentrations of Spirulina in buttermilk result in a significant increase in chlorophyll and carotenoid content, boosting its antioxidant properties. The study also evaluated the prebiotic properties of Spirulina, thus, demonstrating its ability to promote a healthy digestive system. It was found that the addition of 0.25% Spirulina was able to ferment the product more quickly and retained the sensory acceptability of the finished product. The protein content, free radical scavenging activity, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and total phenolic content of 0.25% Spirulina-fortified buttermilk was 1.83%, 48.19%, 30.9 mg/g, 8.24 mg/g, and 4.21 mg/g GAE, respectively. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that cultured buttermilk with a high nutritional value and functional health benefits can be developed by fortification with 0.25% Spirulina as a natural ingredient.

Abstract
Synechocystis salina is a cyanobacterium that has biotechnological potential thanks to its ability to synthesize several bioactive compounds of interest. Therefore, this study aimed to find optimal conditions, in terms of temperature (15-25 °C), pH (6.5-9.5), and NaCl concentration (10-40 g·L-1), using as objective functions the productivities of biomass, total carotenoids, total PBPs, phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin (APC), phycoerythrin (PE), and antioxidants (AOXs) capacity of Synechocystis salina (S. salina) strain LEGE 06155, based in factorial design resorting to Box-Behnken. The model predicted higher biomass productivities under a temperature of 25 °C, a pH of 7.5, and low NaCl concentrations (10 g·L-1). Maximum productivities in terms of bioactive compounds were attained at lower NaCl concentrations (10 g·L-1) (except for PE), with the best temperature and pH in terms of carotenoids and total and individual PBPs ranging from 23-25 °C to 7.5-9.5, respectively. PE was the only pigment for which the best productivity was reached at a lower temperature (15 °C) and pH (6.5) and a higher concentration of NaCl (≈25 g·L-1). AOX productivities, determined in both ethanolic and aqueous extracts, were positively influenced by lower temperatures (15-19 °C) and higher salinities (≈15-25 g·L-1). However, ethanolic AOXs were better recovered at a higher pH (pH ≈ 9.5), while aqueous AOXs were favored by a pH of 8. The model showed that biomass production can be enhanced by 175% (compared to non-optimized conditions), total carotenoids by 91%, PC by 13%, APC by 50%, PE by 130%, and total PBPs by 39%; for AOX productivities, only water extracts exhibited a (marginal) improvement of 1.4%. This study provided insightful information for the eventual upgrading of Synechocystis salina biomass in the biotechnological market.

Abstract
Improving the biochemical status of Spirulina platensis will enhance the functional properties of this microalgae. The present study investigated the effects of adding NaHCO3 to the culture medium on the growth rate and biochemical composition, particularly the coproduction of proteins, carbohydrates, and photosynthetic pigments of S. platensis. Spirulina platensis was grown in different NaHCO3 concentrations (0-16 g L-1). NaHCO3 positively affected the biomass production. The growth of S. platensis and biochemical compound content increased with an increase in the NaHCO3 concentration. The microalgae biomass grown on NaHCO3 also contained higher amounts of protein (64.20 ± 4.18% w w-1) and photosynthetic pigments (phycocyanin and chlorophyll a, b, and total). Protein productivity was especially enhanced by approximately 6-25% (from 0.006 ± 0.0030 to 0.025 ± 0.0031 mg L-1 day-1) with the addition of NaHCO3 compared to the control. In contrast, the content of carbohydrates and antioxidant compounds (phenolic, polyphenol oxidase, and peroxidase activities) decreased with culture age and an increase in the NaHCO3 concentration. These results suggest that S. platensis uses NaHCO3 as a carbon source for photosynthesis, biomass production, and acts as a metabolic energy carrier toward the synthesis of proteins and photosynthetic pigments, which are more energy-consuming metabolites than carbohydrates. The addition of NaHCO3 to the culture media is a potentially useful strategy toward improving the protein and photosynthetic pigment productivity of S. platensis.

Abstract
In this work, the possibility of enriching snacks with Spirulina palatensis (SP) powder as a dragee was studied. In dragee formulation, the effects of various levels of SP, sunflower oil, NaCl and sour whey powder on sensory, physicochemical and nutritional properties were investigated. The dragee formulation was optimized and the characteristics of the optimal sample were compared with the control sample (containing dragee without SP). The results showed that adding SP increased the flavonoids, total anthocyanin content, vitamins, protein, minerals, essential and non-essential amino acids and fatty acids, including ω3 and ω6, while decreasing the energy intake. Based on the results, the optimal dragee sample was formulated and prepared with a desirability of 0.955. The correlation coefficient indicated that the effective optimization process and the performance of the model were carried out properly. The addition of SP had a significant impact on all color parameters considered by the panelists, and the enriched sample was given a very good taste score (75.10 ± 2.923) and an outstanding overall acceptance rate (91.20 ± 1.549) by the panelists. Although morphological data from scanning electron microscopy showed the distribution of non-uniform SP particles relative to the addition of SP in the extruded product formulation, the preservation of more nutritional properties and the good acceptance of sensory evaluators indicated the success of the application in dragee formulation. Therefore, instead of being utilized in an extruder, we discovered that SP may be used as a dragee for snack fortification.

Abstract
Microalgae are photosynthetic eukaryotes that serve as microbial cell factories for the production of useful biochemicals, including pigments. These pigments are eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic dyes and reduce environmental and health risks. They also exhibit excellent anti-oxidative properties, making them a useful commodity in the nutrition and pharmaceutical industries. Light-harvesting pigments such as chlorophylls and phycobilins, and photoprotective carotenoids are some of the most common microalgal pigments. The increasing demand for these pigments in industrial applications has prompted a need to improve their metabolic yield in microalgal cells. So far, expensive cultivation methods and sensitivity to microbial contamination remain the main obstacles to the large-scale production of these pigments. This review highlights current issues and future prospects related to the production of microalgal pigments. The review also emphasizes the use of engineering approaches such as genetic engineering, and optimization of media components and physical parameters to increase their commercial-scale production.

Abstract
Simple Summary Arthrospira maxima is an unbranched, filamentous cyanobacterium rich in important cellular products such as vitamins, minerals, iron, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, and protein, which has made it one of the most important commercial photoautotrophs. To optimize the growth conditions for the production of target compounds and to ensure profitability in commercial applications, the effects of pH and temperature were investigated. A. maxima has been shown to be tolerant to a range of pH conditions and to exhibit hyper-accumulation of phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin at low temperatures. These traits may offer significant advantages for future exploitation, especially in outdoor cultivation with fluctuating pH and temperature. Our study also demonstrated a new method for the purification of phycocyanin from A. maxima by using by ultrafiltration, ion-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration, producing PC at 1.0 mg·mL−1 with 97.6% purity. Abstract Arthrospira maxima is a natural source of fine chemicals for multiple biotechnological applications. We determined the optimal environmental conditions for A. maxima by measuring its relative growth rate (RGR), pigment yield, and photosynthetic performance under different pH and temperature conditions. RGR was highest at pH 7–9 and 30 °C. Chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm), relative maximal electron transport rate (rETRmax), and effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) were highest at pH 7–8 and 25 °C. Interestingly, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin content was highest at 15 °C, which may be the lowest optimum temperature reported for phycobiliprotein production in the Arthrospira species. A threestep purification of phycocyanin (PC) by ultrafiltration, ion-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration resulted in a 97.6% purity of PC.

Abstract
Abstract The total phenolic compound and fatty acid profiles of lipids from microalgae are unique. The present study was designed to investigate aqueous, ethanolic and acetone extracts of several algae (Spirogyra sp., Spirulina sp.,Chlorella sp and Chara sp.) for their antioxidant capacities of the crude extracts and fractions by radical scavenging activity against the stable radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl DPPH as well; total phenolic content. The results showed that Spirulina sp. indicated significantly higher total phenolic compound and antioxidant activities compared to the other species (P < 0.05) and acetone extracts showed higher quantity among three extracts. The fatty acids analysis using High performance liquid chromatography –HPLC showed the presence of palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid, palmitic acid showed high quantity than other fatty acid classes in all studied algae. This study concluded that high antioxidant capacity of microalgae could be inspected for different industrial applications.

Abstract
In anaerobic digestion of agro-industrial effluents and livestock wastes, concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen above 800 mg L-1 are reported to lead to the eutrophication of water bodies. Through the metabolic versatility of microalgae, this nitrogen source can be used and removed, producing carotenoids, phycobiliproteins, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and fatty acids of industrial interest. The challenge of making it feasible is the toxicity of ammoniacal nitrogen to microalgae. Therefore, three strategies were evaluated. The first one was to find species of cyanobacteria with high ammoniacal nitrogen removal efficiency comparing Arthrospira platensis, Synechocystis D202, and Spirulina labyrinthiformis cultivations. The most promising species was cultivated in the second strategy, where cell acclimatization and increasing of the inoculum were evaluated. The cultivation condition that culminated in the best efficiency of ammoniacal nitrogen removal was combined with the third strategy, which consisted of conducting the fed-batch bioprocess. In the batch mode, ammoniacal nitrogen was supplied only once in one fed and was present in high initial concentrations. In fed-batch, multiple feedings with low concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen were used to decrease the inhibitory effect of ammoniacal nitrogen. Arthrospira platensis showed high potential for ammoniacal nitrogen removal. Using the highest initial cell concentration of Arthrospira platensis cultivated by fed-batch, an increase in the consumption of NH3 to 165.1 ± 1.8 mg L-1 and an ammoniacal nitrogen removal efficiency close to 90% were observed. Under this condition, 180.52 ± 11.67 mg g-1 of phycocyanin was attained. Also, the fed-batch cultivations have the potential to reduce the biomass cost production by 33% in comparison to batch experiments.

Abstract
Microalgae are regarded as a rich trove of diverse secondary metabolites that exert remarkable biological activities. In particular, microalgae-derived bioactive phenolic compounds (MBPCs) are a boon to biopharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries due to their diverse bioactivities, including antimicrobial, anticancer, antiviral, and immunomodulatory activities. The state-of-the-art green technologies for extraction and purification of MBPCs, along with the modern progress in the identification and characterization of MBPCs, have accelerated the discovery of novel active pharmaceutical compounds. However, several factors regulate the production of these bioactive phenolic compounds in microalgae. Furthermore, some microalgae species produce toxic phenolic compounds that negatively impact the aquatic ecosystem, animal, and human life. Therefore, the focus of this review paper is to bring into light the current innovations in bioprospection, extraction, purification, and characterization of MBPCs. This review is also aimed at a better understanding of the physicochemical factors regulating the production of MBPCs at an industrial scale. Finally, the present review covers the recent advances in toxicological evaluation, diverse applications, and future prospects of MBPCs in biopharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The present study examines the impacts of supplementing yogurt with 1% whey protein concentrate (WPC), Ca-caseinate (Ca-CN) and Spirulina platensis on the physiological performance of V-line rabbits receiving diets containing yogurt (at a dose of 5 g/kg body weight/day) and the different meat quality aspects. The results show that fat content was highest (p < 0.05) in yogurt fortified with Spirulina powder, but protein (%) was highest in yogurt enriched with WPC. Yogurt containing Spirulina powder showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in total antioxidant activity. The final live body weight for G1 was higher than the other groups. However, additives affected the saddle, hind legs, liver and neck percentages significantly (p < 0.05). There were not significant differences for all groups in the forelegs, lung and heart percentages. LDL-cholesterol, total protein, globulin, albumin, creatinine and immunoglobulin M values were lowest (p < 0.05) in the WPC group. Significant improvements appeared in the small intestinal wall, microbiology, growth performance, serum biochemistry, organ histology and meat quality of the group receiving enriched yogurt. Yogurts enriched with WPC, Ca-CN and Spirulina platensis can be used as functional foods.

Abstract
Anthropogenic activities such as mining, manufacturing, and application of fertilizers release substantial quantities of cadmium (Cd) into the environment. In the natural environment, varying pH may play an important role in the absorption and accumulation of Cd in plants, which can cause toxicity and increase the risk to humans. We conducted a hydroponic experiment to examine the impact of pH on cadmium (Cd) solubility and bioavailability in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under controlled environmental conditions. The results showed that Cd concentration was significantly reduced in wheat with an increase in pH from 5 to 7, while it was dramatically increased at pH ranging from 7 to 9. However, in both cases, a significant reduction in physiological traits was observed. The addition of Cd (20, 50, and 200 μmol L-1) at all pH levels caused a substantial decline in wheat growth, chlorophyll and carotenoids contents, nutrient availability, while elevated cell membrane damage was observed in terms of electrolytic leakage (EL), osmoprotectants, and antioxidants activity. In our findings, the negative effects of acidic pH (5) on wheat growth and development were more pronounced in the presence of Cd toxicities. For instance, Cd concentration with 20, 50, and 200 μmol L-1 at acidic pH (5) reduced shoot dry biomass by 45%, 53%, and 79%, total chlorophyll contents by 26%, 41%, 56% while increased CAT activity in shoot by 109%, 175%, and 221%, SOD activity in shoot by 122%, 135%, and 167%, POD activity in shoot by 137%, 250%, and 265%, MDA contents in shoot by 51%, 83%, and 150%, H2O2 contents in shoot by 175%, 219%, and 292%, EL in shoot by 108%, 165%, and 230%, proline contents in shoot by 235%, 280%, and 393%, respectively as compared to neutral pH without Cd toxicities. On the other hand, neutral pH with Cd toxicities alleviated the negative effects of Cd toxicity on wheat plants by limiting Cd uptake, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, and increased nutrient availability. In conclusion, neutral pH minimized the adverse effects of Cd stress by minimizing its uptake and accumulation in wheat plants.

Abstract
Carotenoids are tetraterpenoids molecules present in all photosynthetic organisms, responsible for better light-harvesting and energy dissipation in photosynthesis. In cyanobacteria, the biosynthetic pathway of carotenoids is well described, and apart from the more common compounds (e.g., β-carotene, zeaxanthin, and echinenone), specific carotenoids can also be found, such as myxoxanthophyll. Moreover, cyanobacteria have a protein complex called orange carotenoid protein (OCP) as a mechanism of photoprotection. Although cyanobacteria are not the organism of choice for the industrial production of carotenoids, the optimisation of their production and the evaluation of their bioactive capacity demonstrate that these organisms may indeed be a potential candidate for future pigment production in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable approach of biorefinery. Carotenoids-rich extracts are described as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumoral agents and are proposed for feed and cosmetical industries. Thus, several strategies for the optimisation of a cyanobacteria-based bioprocess for the obtention of pigments were described. This review aims to give an overview of carotenoids from cyanobacteria not only in terms of their chemistry but also in terms of their biotechnological applicability and the advances and the challenges in the production of such compounds.

Abstract
The baking industries and disinfection of tap water released a considerable amount of bromate into surface water, which has been reported as a carcinogenic compound to mammals. Rotifers play an important role in freshwater ecosystems and are model organisms to assess environmental contamination. In the present study, the effects of different concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 200 mg/L) of bromate on the life-table and population growth parameters were investigated in the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. The results showed that the 24-h LC50 of bromate to B. calyciflorus was 365.29 mg/L (95%Cl: 290.37-480.24). Treatments with 0.01, 10 and 200 mg/L bromate shorten the reproductive period. High levels of bromate (100 and 200 mg/L) significantly decreased net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of population increase, life span, mictic rate of B. calyciflorus. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, swimming speed and antioxidative biomarkers were compared between bromate treatments and the control. The results showed that glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities decreased significantly in response to bromate exposure and the reasons required further investigation. Treatments with 0.001-200 mg/L bromate all significantly reduced swimming linear speed to rotifer larvae and treatments with 100-200 mg/L bromate significantly suppressed the swimming linear speed of adult rotifer. These changes would reduce filtration of algal food and could explain the decreased survival and reproduction. Overall, bromate may not show acute toxicity to rotifers, but still have potential adverse effects on rotifer behavior, which may then influence the community structure in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
In this study, the performance of TCL-1 cultivation in swine wastewater was observed under various light intensity, treatment type of swine wastewater, and initial biomass concentration. Furthermore, pigments production (phycobiliprotein and carotenoid), was the main target in this study along with optimum extraction method. Under the cultivation in the anoxic treated swine wastewater (ATSW), highest biomass increment (1.001 ± 0.104 g/L) was achieved with 2 g/L initial biomass concentration and 1,000 µE/m2/s light intensity whereas cultivation in the anoxic and aerobic treated swine wastewater (AATSW) presented better performance on pigments production with the highest production in allophycocyanin which reached 12.07 ± 0.3% dwc. Extraction time and ultrasonication have significant influence on the phycobiliprotein extraction, yet different temperature and incubation time give similar extraction result for β-carotene. Carotenoids production with AATSW cultivation were two times higher than the cultivation in ATSW. However, ammonium-N degradation was performed better in the ATSW cultivation.

Abstract
Natural products used in the treatment of acne vulgaris may be promising alternative therapies with fewer side effects and without antibiotic resistance. The objective of this study was to formulate creams containing Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis to be used in acne therapy. Spirulina platensis belongs to the group of micro algae and contains valuable active ingredients. The aim was to select the appropriate nonionic surfactants for the formulations in order to enhance the diffusion of the active substance and to certify the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of Spirulina platensis-containing creams. Lyophilized Spirulina platensis powder (SPP) was dissolved in Transcutol HP (TC) and different types of nonionic surfactants (Polysorbate 60 (P60), Cremophor A6:A25 (CR) (1:1), Tefose 63 (TFS), or sucrose ester SP 70 (SP70)) were incorporated in creams as emulsifying agents. The drug release was evaluated by the Franz diffusion method and biocompatibility was tested on HaCaT cells. In vitro antioxidant assays were also performed, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were executed. Antimicrobial activities of the selected compositions were checked against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Cutibacteriumacnes (C. acnes) (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) with the broth microdilution method. Formulations containing SP 70 surfactant with TC showed the most favorable dissolution profiles and were found to be nontoxic. This composition also showed significant increase in free radical scavenger activity compared to the blank sample and the highest SOD enzyme activity was also detected after treatment with the cream samples. In antibacterial studies, significant differences were observed between the treated and control groups after an incubation time of 6 h.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the transcription of selected antioxidants and relevant genes under varying temperature conditions, and to identify the optimum temperature for antioxidants production by Arthrospira platensis. METHODS AND RESULTS The dry weight (DW), pigment production, antioxidants production and gene transcription were examined in A. platensis growing under three temperatures of 23, 30 and 37°C. The cyanobacterial DW was highest in the high temperatures (30 and 37°C), while the pigments, such as Chl a, carotenoids, C-phycocyanin and total phycobiliprotein contents, showed their maximum value at 30°C. The total soluble protein and carbohydrate contents were highest at 30°C. Lipid peroxidation, as a marker for thermal stress, was high at 23°C, while higher temperatures remarkably reduced lipid peroxidation levels. Antioxidants activity was increased by 1·5-fold at 30°C and temperature fluctuations induced the antioxidant enzyme activities. The transcriptional abundance of heat shock protein (HSP90), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), delta-9 desaturase (desC), iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and the large subunit of Rubisco (rbcL) genes was measured under the same temperatures. CONCLUSION The optimal temperature for growth, biochemical constituents and antioxidants of A. platensis is 30°C while some antioxidant enzyme activity increased at lower and higher temperatures. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The study showed the significance of temperature for growth, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and gene expression in A. platensis. This contributes to the knowledge of culturing A. platensis to harvest specific antioxidants or as an antioxidant-rich food source.

Abstract
Herein, a two-stage cultivation process was devised to overcome low pigment content of algal biomass grown in heterotrophy. Post-treatment conditions (i.e., light intensity, temperature, pH and salinity) were initially tested for dense heterotrophically-grown Chlorella sp. HS2 cultures in a multi-channel photobioreactor (mcPBR), and the results clearly indicated the influence of each abiotic factor on algal pigment production. Subsequently, the optimal post-treatment conditions (i.e., 455 μmol m-2 s-1, 34.8℃, pH 8.23 and 0.7% (w/v) salinity), in which highest accumulation of algal pigments is expected, were identified using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Compared to the control cultures grown in mixotrophy for the same duration of entire two-stage process, the results indicated a significantly higher pigment productivity (i.e., 167.5 mg L-1 day-1) in a 5-L fermenter following the post-treatment at optimal conditions. Collectively, these results suggest that the post-treatment of heterotrophic cultures can be successfully deployed to harness the nascent algae-based bioeconomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spirulina microalgae have been added to food; however, there have been few reports on the methods used to protect the antioxidant potential against process conditions, and the effects on the sensory characteristics of products need to be better described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence on the technological properties, sensory profile, and acceptability of the pasta with free or microencapsulated Spirulina biomass added. Pasta formulations included: free Spirulina (FSP), microencapsulated Spirulina (MSP), and empty microspheres (EMP), which were compared with the control pasta (CP). RESULTS The microencapsulation protected the antioxidant potential of Spirulina in 37.8% of the pasta cooking conditions. The microspheres presented low solubility in water (86 g.kg-1 ) and high encapsulation efficiency (87.6%), this being appropriate for addition to products that need cooking in water. The technological properties of pasta (water absorption, weight gain, firmness, and adhesiveness) were affected, but the overall acceptability index (85.13%) was not influenced by the addition of microspheres, despite changes observed in the sensory profile obtained by the CATA (check-all-that-apply). CONCLUSIONS Spirulina could be added to pasta even without microencapsulation but the microencapsulation in alginate allows for the protection of the antioxidant potential of the biomass, representing a potential alternative for the bakery industry. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate the enhanced disease resistance and positive immunomodulation of novel pectin isolated from Spirulina maxima (SmP) in zebrafish model. Zebrafish larvae exposed to SmP had significantly (p < 0.05) higher cumulative percent survival (CPS) at 25 (44.0%) and 50 μg/mL (67.0%) against Edwardsiella piscicida compared to the control. However, upon Aeromonas hydrophila challenge, SmP exposed larvae at 50 μg/mL had slightly higher CPS (33.3%) compared to control group (26.7%). SmP supplemented zebrafish exhibited the higher CPS against E. piscicida (93.3%) and A. hydrophila (60.0%) during the early stage of post-infection (<18 hpi). qRT-PCR results demonstrated that exposing (larvae) and feeding (adults) of SmP, drive the modulation of a wide array of immune response genes. In SmP exposed larvae, up-regulation of the antimicrobial enzyme (lyz: 3.5-fold), mucin (muc5.1: 2.84, muc5.2: 2.11 and muc5.3: 2.40-fold), pro-inflammatory cytokines (il1β: 1.79-fold) and anti-oxidants (cat: 2.87 and sod1: 1.82-fold) were identified. In SmP fed adult zebrafish (gut) showed >2-fold induced pro-inflammatory cytokine (il1β) and chemokines (cxcl18b, ccl34a.4 and ccl34b.4). Overall results confirmed the positive modulation of innate immune responses in larval stage and it could be the main reason for developing disease resistance against E. piscicida and A. hydrophila. Thus, non-toxic, natural and biodegradable SmP could be considered as the potential immunomodulatory agent for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract
Arthrospira platensis (spirulina) is considered a source of natural molecules with nutritional and health benefits. As the different storage forms can affect the quantity and quality of bioactive ingredients, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of freezing, oven-drying and freeze-drying on chemical composition of spirulina biomass. Total proteins, photosynthetic pigments and antioxidants, were analyzed and compared to respective quantities in fresh biomass. The frozen sample exhibited the highest content of phycocyanin-C, phenols, and ascorbic acid, also respect to the fresh biomass. The highest total flavonoid amount was in the freeze-dried biomass. HPLC-DAD analysis of phenolic acids revealed the presence of the isoflavone genistein, known for its therapeutic role, in all the spirulina samples. The phosphomolybdenum method (TAC) and DPPH scavenging activity were applied to determine the antioxidant activity of different samples. The highest DPPH scavenging activity was detected in fresh and freeze-dried biomass and it was positively related to carotenoid content. A positive correlation indicated that carotenoids, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid and all phenolic compounds were the major contributors to the TAC activity in spirulina biomass. The results highlighted a different functional value of spirulina biomass, depending on the processing methods used for its storage.

Abstract
Lately, microalgae have been used as natural additives in fish-transformed products to improve their nutritional quality. In this research, the effects of adding Spirulina platensis at concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 1.5% w/v on both the texture and the sensory characteristics of canned burgers were studied. In fact, the addition of Spirulina platensis to fish burgers improves their nutritional composition. Compared to the results of the other fish burger treatments, the treatments that contain 1% of Spirulina platensis had better texture and sensory properties (p < 0.05). Besides, these treatments showed higher swelling ability as well as water and oil holding capacities, due to the important dietary fibers and polysaccharides contents found in Spirulina platensis. No mold or foodborne pathogens were detected in any of the canned burgers up to 8 months of storage at 4 °C. Furthermore, burgers prepared with Spirulina were distinguished by the lowest mean (a* and b*) values (p < 0.05), which shows that the yellow color gradually diminished towards a greenish color. Because of the presence of polysaccharides and pigments (chlorophylls, carotenoids and phycocyanin), Spirulina platensis considerably ameliorates the antioxidant activities of the newly prepared fish burgers. On the whole, we can conclude that Spirulina platensis can be used as a nutritious additive to produce new fish-based products with high alimentary qualities.

Abstract
In this review, the effect of pharmaceuticals (PHRs) and personal care products (PCPs) on microalgal growth and metabolism is reported. Concentrations of various PHRs and PCPs that cause inhibition and toxicity to growths of different microalgal strains are summarized and compared. The effect of PHRs and PCPs on microalgal metabolism (oxidative stress, enzyme activity, pigments, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, toxins), as well as on the cellular morphology, is discussed. Literature data concerning the removal of PHRs and PCPs from wastewaters by living microalgal cultures, with the emphasis on microalgal growth, are gathered and discussed. The potential of simultaneously bioremediating PHRs/PCPs-containing wastewaters and cultivating microalgae for biomass production in a single process is considered. In the light of reviewed data, the feasibility of post-bioremediation microalgal biomass is discussed in terms of its contamination, biosafety and further usage for production of value-added biomolecules (pigments, lipids, proteins) and biomass as a whole.

Abstract
Microalga is a promising candidate for bio-mitigation of CO2. It has been longtime recognized that high CO2 concentration would impose stresses on microalga to suppress the growth. However, this concept was challenged in this research by investigating the growth, photosynthesis and anti-oxidant characteristics of Arthrospira platensis under independent effects of CO2 concentrations and pH. Results showed the growth of A. platensis was only inhibited when broth was in acidic pH. Microalgal cells could deal with high CO2 concentration readily if medium pH was maintained in favorite level. Photosynthesis was inhibited swiftly and significantly under acidified condition. The singlet oxygen was produced in low level for alkalic pH treatment, however it burst quickly after low pH stress was imposed. Accordingly, it was proposed that the phenomena of high CO2 intolerance was caused by CO2 induced pH decline rather than high CO2 concentration itself. This finding has significance on large scale application of microalga based CO2 mitigation and flue gas treatment since it proved concentrated CO2 could be directly assimilated without dilution.

Abstract
Spirulina biomass has great nutritional value, but its proteins are not as well adsorbed as animal ones are. New functional food ingredients and metabolites can be obtained from spirulina, using different selective biodegradations of its biomass. Four enzyme-assisted extraction methods were independently studied, and their best operation conditions were determined. Enzymes were employed to increase the yield of easily adsorbed proteic extracts. A biomass pre-treatment using Alcalase® (pH 6.5, 1% v/w, and 30 °C) is described, which increased the extraction yield of hydrophilic biocomponents by 90% w/w compared to the simple solvent extraction. Alcalase® gives rise to 2.5–6.1 times more amino acids than the others and eight differential short peptides (438–1493 Da). These processes were scaled up and the extracts were analyzed. Higher destruction of cell integrity in the case of Alcalase® was also visualized by transmission electron microscopy. The described extractive technology uses cheap, commercial, food grade enzymes and hexane, accepted for food and drug safety. It is a promising process for a competitive biofactory, thanks to an efficient production of extracts with high applied potential in the nutrition, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The tolerance and antioxidant response of the green alga P. pringsheimii to cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) was investigated. The algal biomass was constant at the relatively lower metal concentrations of Cd and Pb (5, 12 µM, and 2.5-200 µM, respectively), whereas higher concentrations severely inhibited the algal biomass yield. The pigment content of P. pringsheimii decreased due to the investigated metals, especially with Cd concentrations. However, the Pb concentrations of 2.5-200 µM enhanced the pigment content. The carotenoids content was highly repressed by the Cd concentrations. Nevertheless, Pb concentrations highly stimulated the carotenoids content, with the exception of 400 and 500 µM Pb. The biochemical contents of P. pringsheimii including phenolic, total soluble protein and carbohydrate contents responded variably to the investigated metals. The concentrations of Cd were found to be harmful to total soluble protein and carbohydrates, but not the phenolic contents. However, all biochemical contents were stimulated under relatively lower Pb concentrations. Markedly for Pb, the radical scavenging, reducing power, and chelating activities improved under the metals exposure excluding higher concentrations. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and POD) were highly stimulated with all treatments (except for CAT activities at the highest Cd and Pb concentrations, 300 and 500 µM, respectively). Remarkably, Cd treatments have higher antioxidant enzyme activities compared to that of Pb treatments. The antioxidants augmentation of P. pringsheimii under the metal stress may be exploited for future application in several fields.
