Abstract
A photoacoustic (PA) imaging technique using the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window has attracted more and more attention because of its merits of deeper penetration depth and higher signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio than that using the first near-infrared (NIR-I) one. However, the design and development of high-performance PA imaging contrast agents in the NIR-II window is still a challenge. A semiconducting polymer, constructed by asymmetric units, exhibits regiorandom characteristics that effectively increase the distortion of the backbone. This increase in the degree of twist can regulate the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) effect, resulting in an enhancement of the PA signal. In this paper, an asymmetric structural acceptor strategy is developed to improve the PA signals of the resulting semiconducting polymer (PATQ-MP) in the NIR-II window with improved brightness, higher S/N ratio, and better photothermal conversion efficiency compared to polymers with the same main-chain structure containing a symmetric acceptor. DFT analysis showed that PATQ-MP containing an asymmetric acceptor monomer had a larger dihedral angle, which effectively improved the PA signal intensity by enhancing the TICT effect. The PEG-encapsulated PATQ-MP nanoparticles exhibit promising performance in the PA imaging of mouse tumors in vivo, demonstrating the clear identification of microvessels as small as 100 μm along with rapid metabolism within a span of 5 h. Therefore, this work provides a unique molecular design strategy for improving the signal intensity of PA imaging in the NIR-II window.

Abstract
The formation of an occlusive thrombus in the blood vessel is the main culprit for numerous life-threatening cardiovascular diseases that represent the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Herein, we develop a polymer nanoplatform that integrates long-wavelength second near-infrared (NIR-II) photoacoustic imaging-based thrombosis detection and antithrombotic activity. We design and synthesize a semiconducting homopolymer with strong absorption in the NIR-II region and molecular motion that boosts photothermal conversion and photoacoustic signal. We dope the homopolymer with a thermosensitive nitric oxide donor to formulate a nanoplatform, on which a fibrin-specific ligand is functionalized to ensure selective thrombus targeting. We show that with strong NIR-II light harvesting capability, bright photoacoustic signal and active thrombus accumulation ability, the NIR-II photoacoustic nanoprobes are able to sensitively and selectively delineate thrombi. We find that the nanoplatform also displays rapid and efficient blood clot removal activity with nearly complete blood flow restoration in both carotid thrombosis models and low extremity arterial thrombosis models under NIR-II light trigger by integrating a thrombus-localized photothermal effect and on-demand nitric oxide release. This nanoplatform offers a versatile approach for the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases caused by various thrombotic disorders.

Abstract
Fullerene adducts have attracted attention in a variety of applications including organic optoelectronic devices. In this regard, we have designed a covalently linked donor-acceptor dyad comprising a fluorobenzothiadiazole-thiophene (BTF2-Th) unit with the electron acceptor fullerene in an Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor (A-D-A) molecular arrangement. We synthesized and characterized two new covalently bonded benzothiadiazole-based fullerene molecules, mono-adduct, 7 (benzothiadiazole : PC61BM = 1 : 1, anchored terminally via esterification reaction) and multi-adduct, 10-I (benzothiadiazole : PC61BM = n : 1, where n ≥ 1, attached directly to the fullerene core via the Prato reaction) using different synthetic strategies. A broadening of the UV-visible spectra of the modified fullerene derivative with strong absorption from 350 to 500 nm and at low wavelengths is observed as compared to PC61BM. A suitable bandgap, good electronic conductivity, and appreciable solubility in solvents suggest their utility in optoelectronic devices. The mono-adduct 7 showed two-order higher electron mobility as compared to bis-adduct 10-I due to retention of extended conjugation in fullerene, as in the case of PC61BM. Experimentally determined optical properties and energy levels of the fullerene adducts were found to be in good agreement and supported by theoretical calculations. The presence of BTF2 affects the ground state dipole moments as well as the absorption strengths, most noticeable in the case of two attached BTF2 moieties. The HOMO and LUMO levels are found to be localized on the fullerene cage with the extension of the HOMO to the BTF2 unit more and the same is noticed in ground state dipole moment in the side-chain functionalized structure. Such structural arrangement provides easy charge transfer between acceptor and donor units to allow a concomitant effect of favorable optoelectronic properties, energy levels of the frontier orbitals, effective exciton dissociation, and charge transport which may reduce processing complexity to advance single material-based future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
In this work we have theoretically investigated the optoelectronic properties of a series of acceptor-donor-acceptor type molecules by employing density functional theory formalism. We have used 1,1-dicyano-methylene-3-indanone as the acceptor unit and a fused N-methyl-dithieno-pyrrole as the donor unit. We have calculated the values of dihedral angle, inter-ring bond length, bond length alteration parameters, HOMO-LUMO gap, ionization potential, electron affinity, partial density of states, reorganization energies for holes and electrons, charge transfer rate for holes and electrons of the seven types of compounds designed via molecular engineering. Calculated IP and EA values manifest that PBDB-C2 shows excellent charge transportation compared to others. Absorption spectra of the designed compounds have been studied using the time-dependent density functional theory method. From the calculation of reorganization energy it is confirmed that our designed molecules behave more likely as donor materials. Our calculated results also reveal that compounds with electron donating substituents at the acceptor units show higher value of λ max. Absorption spectra of donor/acceptor blends show similar trends with the isolated compounds. Observed lower exciton binding energy values for all the compounds indicate facile charge carrier separation at the donor/acceptor interface. Moreover, the negative values of Gibb's free energy change also indicate the ease of exciton dissociation of all the designed compounds. The photovoltaic characteristics of the studied compounds infer that all the designed compounds have the potential to become suitable candidate for the fabrication of organic semiconductors. However, PBDB-C2 and PBDB-C4 with the highest PCE of 18.25% can become the best candidate for application in photovoltaics.

Abstract
A series of dyes with the D-π-A architecture has been designed and studied for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We have used phenothiazine (PTZ) and coumarin (COU) derivatives as the donor unit and benzopyrrole (BTZ) and 2-methyl-2H-isoindole-1,3-(3aH,7aH)-diene (IND) as the acceptor unit along with the azomethine group and thiophene ring as the π-spacer unit. Three electron donating groups viz. -CH3, -NH2, and -OH and four electron withdrawing groups viz. -CF3, -COCl, -F and -NO2 have been attached at the donor and the acceptor units respectively of the four unsubstituted dyes COU-BTZ, PTZ-BTZ, COU-IND and PTZ-IND. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods have been employed to investigate the structural, electronic and photochemical properties of these dyes. The study reveals that the unsubstituted dye PTZ-BTZ possesses the lowest value of ΔH-L. Our study also reveals that attachment of the -NO2 group at the acceptor unit lowers the ΔH-L values of all the dye molecules. We have observed that the excited state oxidation potential (ESOP) of all the dyes lies above the conduction band of the TiO2 semiconducting surface. However, the ground state oxidation potential (GSOP) of most of the dyes belonging to the COU-BTZ and COU-IND groups lies below the redox potential of the I-/I3- redox couple. The total reorganization energy (λtot) values of the COU-BTZ and COU-IND groups of dyes are observed to be low compared to the other groups of dyes. The study of the charge transport properties of the dyes confirms that the designed dyes will act as electron transport materials. The absorption properties of the dyes show that the COU-BTZ group of dyes possesses the maximum values of the absorption wavelength (λmax values) and attaching the -NO2 group at the acceptor unit shifts the λmax values of all the dyes to the longer region. From the study of the electronic properties of the dye-TiO2 complexes it has been observed that the performance of the dyes has been enhanced compared to the isolated dye molecules.

Abstract
A series of acceptors, S1-S5, has been designed based on the acceptor-π-donor-π-acceptor (A-π-D-π-A) architecture by incorporating a phenothiazine unit as the central donor unit. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods have been employed to study the effect of various end-capped groups on the geometric, electronic, optical and charge transport properties of the designed acceptor molecules. The results reveal that on increasing the electron-withdrawing nature of the end-capped groups, the performance of the acceptor molecules increases. It is also observed that on increasing the flexibility of the end-capped groups, the planarity of the molecules gets destroyed and, as a result, the performance of the acceptor molecules decreases. The investigated molecules exhibit high electron affinity (EA) and low reorganization energy for electrons (λ-), indicating the electron acceptor nature of the designed molecules. The absorption properties of the molecules manifest that compounds S2-S4 possess high values of the maximum wavelength (λmax) of absorption. We have also studied the properties of a D/A active layer by considering PffBT4T-2OD as the electron donor and arranging PffBT4T-2OD/S1-S5 molecules in a face to face manner. Properties of the D/A blend indicate that molecules S2-S4 have capacity to promote charge carrier separation at the D/A active layer. Our results provide guidelines for further designing of acceptors to enhance the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs).

Abstract
Two asymmetric thiophene (T)/pyridine (Py) flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) polymers with a regiorandom and regioregular conjugated backbone are synthesized via a Stille polycondensation to investigate the effect of regioregularity on their optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance in fullerene-based polymer solar cells. Surprisingly, both polymers possess very similar optical bandgap, energy levels, and photovoltaic performance. These findings, combined with a factor of 19 reactivity difference between the two end groups of the asymmetric DPP monomer, intuitively suggest the formation of regular chain segments in the random polymer. However, by modeling the random polymerization reaction with a kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation, evidence is obtained for exclusive formation of a fully random polymer structure. UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra of three extended DPP chromophores, containing the donor segments (T-T-T, Py-T-Py, and Py-T-T) present in the regiorandom polymer, confirm that regioregularity of the backbone has a negligible influence on the optical properties.

Abstract
Two narrow band gap conjugated ternary copolymers comprising two electron-rich (donor, D) and one electron-deficient (acceptor, A) moieties regularly alternating along the polymer backbone were designed and synthesized. The polymers with the repeating unit in a D1-A-D2-A manner were constructed by copolymerizing a bisstannyled-D1 (D1 = n-alkyl-substituted cyclopentadithiophene) and a dibromo-monomer (Br-A-D2-A-Br, D2 = branched-alkyl-substituted cyclopentadithiophene, A =[1,2,5]selenadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine or 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole) through a palladium-catalyzed Stille polymerization. This approach that enables variations in the donor fragment substituents can not only control the polymer regiochemistry but also the solubility. Two ternary copolymers exhibited absorbance up to near-infrared region along with relatively narrow band gap in the range of 1.02–1.26 eV. The polymeric photovoltaic cells based on CDTPSE/PC61BM show the short circuit density of 1.45 mA cm−2, open current voltage of 0.53 V, and photocurrent spectra response from 300 to 1,150 nm under AM 1.5 simulator (100 mW cm−2). It is indicated that it can be potentially applied to near infrared photodetectors.

Abstract
Two two-dimensional (2D) donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated polymers (CPs), namely, PBDT-TVT-BT and PBDT-TVT-FBT, in which two ((E)-(4,5-didecylthien-2-yl)vinyl)- 5-thien-2-yl (TVT) side chains were introduced into 4,8-position of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) to synthesize the highly conjugated electron-donating building block BDT-TVT, and benzothiadiazole (BT) and/or 5,6-difluoro-BT as electron-accepting unit, were designed to systematically ascertain the impact of fluorination on thermal stability, optoelectronic property, and photovoltaic performance. Both resultant copolymers exhibited the lower bandgap (1.60 ~ 1.69 eV) and deeper highest occupied molecular orbital energy level (EHOMO, -5.17 ~ -5.37 eV). It was found that the narrowed absorption, deepened EHOMO and weakened aggregation in solid film but had insignificant influence on thermal stability after fluorination in PBDT-TVT-FBT. Accordingly, a PBDT-TVT-FBT-based device yielded 16% increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 4.50% to 5.22%, benefited from synergistically elevated VOC, JSC, and FF, which was mainly originated from deepened EHOMO, increased μh, μe, and more balanced μh/μe ratio, higher exciton dissociation probability and improved microstructural morphology of the photoactive layer as a result of incorporating fluorine into the polymer backbone.

Abstract
Printed electronics is simultaneously one of the most intensely studied emerging research areas in science and technology and one of the fastest growing commercial markets in the world today. For the past decade the potential for organic electronic (OE) materials to revolutionize this printed electronics space has been widely promoted. Such conviction in the potential of these carbon-based semiconducting materials arises from their ability to be dissolved in solution, and thus the exciting possibility of simply printing a range of multifunctional devices onto flexible substrates at high speeds for very low cost using standard roll-to-roll printing techniques. However, the transition from promising laboratory innovations to large scale prototypes requires precise control of nanoscale material and device structure across large areas during printing fabrication. Maintaining this nanoscale material control during printing presents a significant new challenge that demands the coupling of OE materials and devices with clever nanoscience fabrication approaches that are adapted to the limited thermodynamic levers available. In this review we present an update on the strategies and capabilities that are required in order to manipulate the nanoscale structure of large area printed organic photovoltaic (OPV), transistor and bioelectronics devices in order to control their device functionality. This discussion covers a range of efforts to manipulate the electroactive ink materials and their nanostructured assembly into devices, and also device processing strategies to tune the nanoscale material properties and assembly routes through printing fabrication. The review finishes by highlighting progress in printed OE devices that provide a feedback loop between laboratory nanoscience innovations and their feasibility in adapting to large scale printing fabrication. The ability to control material properties on the nanoscale whilst simultaneously printing functional devices on the square metre scale is prompting innovative developments in the targeted nanoscience required for OPV, transistor and biofunctional devices.

Abstract
Manipulating the electron deficiency and controlling the regioregularity of π-conjugated polymers are important for the fine-tuning of their electronic and electrochemical properties to make them suitable for an organic solar cell. Here, we report such a molecular design of unsymmetric diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based copolymers with different aromatic side units of either thiophene (Th), pyridine (Py), or fluorobenzene (FBz). The unsymmetric electron acceptors of Th-DPP-Py and Th-DPP-FBz were polymerized with the electron donor of two-dimensional benzobisthiophene (BDT-Th), affording two regiorandom DPP copolymers. They exhibited contrasting molecular orbital levels and bulk heterojunction morphology in methanofullerene-blended films, leading to power conversion efficiencies of 3.75 and 0.18%, respectively. We further synthesized a regioregular DPP copolymer via sandwiching the centrosymmetric BDT-Th unit by two Th-DPP-Py units in an axisymmetric manner. The extensive characterization through morphology observation, X-ray diffraction, and space-charge-limited current mobilities highlight the case-dependent positive/negative effects of regioregularity and electron deficiency control.

Abstract
Fluorination of conjugated polymers is an effective strategy to tune the energy levels for obtaining high power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic solar cells. In this work, we have developed fluoro-modulated molecular geometries in diketopyrrolopyrrole based low-bandgap copolymers. In these polymers, planar conformation can be locked by intramolecular non-covalent interaction (intramolecular supramolecular interaction) between the sulfur atoms and the introduced F atoms (F···S interaction). By varying the fluorinated moieties, such a planarity can be disturbed and the molecular geometry is tuned. As a result, the polymer' properties can be modulated, including the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum to become broaden, charge mobility to be enhanced, open-circuit voltage (V oc) and short-circuited current (J sc) to be elevated, and thus photovoltaic performance to be improved. The photovoltaic device based on PCFB, one of the fluorinated terpolymers, exhibited a high PCE near 8.5% with simultaneously enhanced V oc and J sc relative to the non-fluorinated one (PCB).

Abstract
We investigated the influence of backbone regiochemistry on the conductivity, charge density, and polaron structure in the widely studied n-doped donor-acceptor polymer poly[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene) [P(NDI2OD-T2)]. In contrast to classic semicrystalline polymers such as poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), the regioirregular (RI) structure of the naphthalenediimide (NDI)-bithiophene (T2) backbone does not alter the intramolecular steric demand of the chain versus the regioregular (RR) polymer, yielding RI-P(NDI2OD-T2) with similar energetics and optical features as its RR counterpart. By combining the electrical, UV-vis/infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance data and density functional theory calculations, we quantitatively characterized the conductivity, aggregation, crystallinity, and charge density, and simulated the polaron structures, molecular vibrations, and spin density distribution of RR-/RI-P(NDI2OD-T2). Importantly, we observed that RI-P(NDI2OD-T2) can be doped to a greater extent compared to its RR counterpart. This finding is remarkable and contrasts benchmark P3HT, allowing us to uniquely study the role of regiochemistry on the charge-transport properties of n-doped donor-acceptor polymers.

Abstract
Employing the thiophene based quinone, benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-4,8-dione, as the electron-accepting moiety alongside N-phenylcarbazole donors to produce a donor-π-acceptor-π-donor (D-π-A-π-D) molecule has yielded a new red emitter displaying delayed fluorescence. This new molecule shows strongly (over 100 nm) red-shifted emission when compared to an anthraquinone based analogue. Cyclic voltammetry complemented by computational insights prove that this red-shift is due to the significantly stronger electron-accepting ability of the thiophene quinone compared to anthraquinone. Photophysical and computational studies of this molecule have revealed that while the presence of the thiophene containing acceptor facilitates rapid intersystem crossing which is comparable to anthraquinone analogues, the reverse intersystem crossing rate is slow and non-radiative decay is rapid which we can attribute to low-lying locally excited states. This limits the total photoluminescence quantum efficiency to less than 10% in both solution and the solid state. These results provide a useful example of how very minor structural variations can have a defining impact on the photophysical properties of new molecular materials.

Abstract
The development of conjugated alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers with various electron-rich and electron-deficient units in polymer backbones has boosted the power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 17% for polymer solar cells (PSCs) over the past two decades. However, further enhancements in PCEs for PSCs are still imperative to compensate their imperfect stability for fulfilling practical applications. Meanwhile development of these alternating D-A copolymers is highly demanding in creative design and syntheses of novel D and/or A monomers. In this regard, when being possible to adopt an existing monomer unit as a third component from its libraries, either a D' unit or an A' moiety, to the parent D-A type polymer backbones to afford conjugated D-A terpolymers, it will give a facile and cost-effective method to improve their light absorption and tune energy levels and also interchain packing synergistically. Moreover, the rationally controlled stoichiometry for these components in such terpolymers also provides access for further fine-tuning these factors, thus resulting in high-performance PSCs. Herein, based on their unique features, the recent progress of conjugated D-A terpolymers for efficient PSCs is reviewed and it is discussed how these factors influence their photovoltaic performance, for providing useful guidelines to design new terpolymers toward high-efficiency PSCs.

Abstract
The quinoxalineimide (QI) unit, containing the electron-withdrawing quinoxaline and imide groups, is an electron-deficient building block for organic semiconductor materials. In this study, three fluorinated or chlorinated QIs (QI-1F, QI-2F, and QI-2Cl), have been designed and developed. We report the impact of the fluorination or chlorination of the QI unit on the electronic structures and charge carrier transport properties as compared to unsubstituted QI (QI-2H) bearing the same n-hexyl side chains. The frontier molecular orbital energy levels downshifted with the incorporation of fluorine or chlorine atoms onto the π-framework of QI. Single-crystal structure analyses revealed that all QI-based molecules have an entirely planar backbone and are packed into two-dimensional slipped stacks with diagonal electronic coupling that enables two-dimensional charge carrier transport. Notably, the doubly fluorinated or chlorinated QIs formed compact molecular packing in the single-crystal structures through an infinite intermolecular network relative to unsubstituted QI (QI-2H). The field-effect transistor-based QI molecules exhibited typical n-channel transport properties. As compared to unsubstituted QI (QI-2H), the chlorinated QI exhibited improved electron mobilities up to 7.1 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1. The threshold voltages of the fluorinated or chlorinated QI devices were clearly smaller than that of QI-2H, which reflects the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of the molecules. This study demonstrates that the fluorinated or chlorinated QIs are versatile building blocks in creating n-channel organic semiconductor materials.

Abstract
We designed and synthesized two isomeric nonfullerene acceptors, IFBR-p and IFBR-d. These molecular semiconductors contain indacenodithiophene (IDT) as the central unit, adjacent asymmetric 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole units, and are flanked with rhodanine as the peripheral units. The orientation of the two fluorine atoms (proximal, p, or distal, d), relative to IDT impacts most severely the film morphologies when blended with the electron-donating polymer PTzBI. Polymer solar cells based on PTzBI:IFBR-p give rise to a power conversion efficiency (7.3 ± 0.2%) that is higher than what is achieved with PTzBI:IFBR-d (5.2 ± 0.1%). This difference is attributed to the lower tendency for (over)crystallization by IFBR-p and the resulting more favorable morphology of the photoactive layer. These results highlight the subtle impact of substitution regiochemistry on the properties of nonfullerene acceptors through modulation of their self-assembly tendencies.

Abstract
A series of linear acenes with five fused rings, which contain thiophene, selenophene, and tellurophene as the outmost rings, have been synthesized from well-known benzodithiophene (BDT). It was found that the optical, electrochemical properties and crystal packing motifs could be modulated by changing heteroatoms in the outmost rings.

Abstract
Progress in the molecular design and processing protocols of semiconducting polymers has opened significant opportunities for the fabrication of low-cost plastic electronic devices. Recent studies indicate that field-effect transistors and organic solar cells fabricated using narrow-bandgap regioregular polymers with translational symmetries in the direction of the backbone vector often outperform those containing analogous regiorandom polymers. This review addresses the cutting edge of regioregularity chemistry, in particular how to control the spatial distribution in the molecular structures and how this order translates to more ordered bulk morphologies. The effect of regioregularity on charge transport and photovoltaic properties is also outlined. The continued search of high-performance semiconductors for organic electronics calls for smart molecular designs. Here, Ying et al. review the recent development of synthesizing regioregular narrow bandgap conjugated polymers and the effect of regioregularity on transistor and photovoltaic performance.

Abstract
In this study, we developed a ternary conjugated polymer, IFBT-TT, consisting of centrosymmetric indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene as the electron-donating units and an asymmetric 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole as the electron-accepting unit. The target copolymer was synthesized using an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type of macromonomer, which gave the target copolymer a precisely defined D1-A-D2-A architecture. Theoretical simulation revealed that the IFBT-TT features C-H···N and F···S nonbonding interactions, leading to a highly rigid and planar molecular backbone. Although the spin-cast IFBT-TT films exhibited an amorphous morphology lacking in ordered structures, the fabricated field-effect transistors presented remarkable p-type transport properties with high mobility of up to 5.0 cm2 V-1 s-1 and excellent ambient stability. These observations highlight that the integration of a three-component D1-A-D2-A-type backbone framework is an effective molecular design strategy for high-mobility conjugated polymers.
