Abstract
Despite the accessibility of numerous transition metal polyphosphido complexes through transition-metal-mediated activation of white phosphorus, the targeted functionalization of Pn ligands to obtain functional monophosphorus species remains challenging. In this study, we introduce a new [3+1] fragmentation procedure for cyclo-P4 ligands, leading to the discovery of acylcyanophosphanides and -phosphines. Treatment of the complex [K(18c-6)][(Ar*BIAN)Co(η4 -P4 )] ([K(18c-6)]3, 18c-6=[18]crown-6, Ar*=2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-isopropylphenyl, BIAN=1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene diimine) with acyl chlorides results in the formation of acylated tetraphosphido complexes [(Ar*BIAN)Co(η4 -P4 C(O)R)] (R=tBu, Cy, 1-Ad, Ph; 4 a-d). Subsequent reactions of 4 a-d with cyanide salts yield acylated cyanophosphanides [RC(O)PCN]- (9 a-d- ) and the cyclo-P3 cobaltate anion [(Ar*BIAN)Co(η3 -P3 )(CN)]- (8- ). Further reactions of 4 a-d with trimethylsilyl cyanide (Me3 SiCN) and isocyanides provide insight into a plausible mechanism of this [3+1] fragmentation reaction, as these reagents partially displace the P4 C(O)R ligand from the cobalt center. Several potential intermediates of the [3+1] fragmentation were characterized. Additionally, the introduction of a second acyl substituent was achieved by treating [K(18c-6)]9b with CyC(O)Cl, resulting in the first bis(acyl)monocyanophosphine (CyC(O))2 PCN (10).

Abstract
The reaction between diphosphorus derivatives [(Cl ImDipp )P2 (Dipp)]OTf (1[OTf]) and [(Cl ImDipp )P2 (Dipp)Cl] (1[Cl]) with the cyclotetraphosphido cobalt complex [K(18c-6)][(PHDI)Co(η4 -cyclo-P4 )] (2) leads to the formation of complex [(PHDI)Co{η4 -cyclo-P6 (Dipp)(Cl ImDipp )}] (3), which features an unusual hexaphosphido ligand [Cl ImDipp =4,5-dichloro-1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-yl, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 18c-6=18-crown-6, PHDI=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)phenanthrene-9,10-diimine]. Complex 3 was obtained as a crystalline material with a moderate yield at low temperature. Upon exposure to ambient temperature, compound 3 slowly transforms into two other compounds, [K(18c-6)][(PHDI)Co(η4 -P7 Dipp)] (4) and [(PHDI)Co{cyclo-P5 (Cl ImDipp )}] (5). The novel complexes 3-5 were characterized using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. To shed light on the formation of these compounds, a proposed mechanism based on 31 P NMR monitoring studies is presented.

Abstract
We report the facile synthesis of a rare niobium(V) imido NHC complex with a dianionic OCO-pincer benzimidazolylidene ligand (L 1 ) with the general formula [NbL 1 (N t Bu)PyCl] 1-Py. We achieved this by in situ deprotonation of the corresponding azolium salt [H 3 L 1 ][Cl] and subsequent reaction with [Nb(N t Bu)Py 2 Cl 3 ]. The pyridine ligand in 1-Py can be removed by the addition of B(C6F5)3 as a strong Lewis acid leading to the formation of the pyridine-free complex 1. In contrast to similar vanadium(V) complexes, complex 1-Py was found to be a good precursor for various salt metathesis reactions, yielding a series of chalcogenido and pnictogenido complexes with the general formula [ NbL 1 (N t Bu)Py(EMes)] (E = O (2), S (3), NH (4), and PH (5)). Furthermore, complex 1-Py can be converted to alkyl complex (6) with 1 equiv of neosilyl lithium as a transmetallation agent. Addition of a second equivalent yields a new trianionic supporting ligand on the niobium center (7) in which the benzimidazolylidene ligand is alkylated at the former carbene carbon atom. The latter is an interesting chemically "noninnocent" feature of the benzimidazolylidene ligand potentially useful in catalysis and atom transfer reactions. Addition of mesityl lithium to 1-Py gives the pyridine-free aryl complex 8, which is stable toward "overarylation" by an additional equivalent of mesityl lithium. Electrochemical investigation revealed that complexes 1-Py and 1 are inert toward reduction in dichloromethane but show two irreversible reduction processes in tetrahydrofuran as a solvent. However, using standard reduction agents, e.g., KC8, K-mirror, and Na/Napht, no reduced products could be isolated. All complexes have been thoroughly studied by various techniques, including 1H-, 13C{1H}-, and 1H-15N HMBC NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
The tetrahedral 1,2,3-triphospha-4-azatricyclo [1.1.0.02,4] butane (P3N) molecule-an isovalent species of phosphorus (P4)-was prepared in low-temperature (5 K) phosphine-nitrogen ices and was identified in the gas phase through isomer-selective, tunable, soft photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Theoretical calculations reveal that the substitution of a single phosphorus atom by nitrogen in the P4 molecule results in enhanced spherical aromaticity while simultaneously increasing the strain energy from 74 to 195 kJ mol-1. In P3N, the P─P bond is shortened compared to those in P4 by 3.6 pm, while the P─N─P bond angle of 73.0° is larger by 13.0° compared to the P─P─P bond angle of 60.0° in P4. The identification of tetrahedral P3N enhances our fundamental understanding of the chemical bonding, electronic structure, and stability of binary, interpnictide tetrahedral molecules and reveals a universal route to prepare ring strained cage molecules in extreme environments.

Abstract
The diagonal relationship in the periodic table between phosphorus and carbon has set an expectation that the triple-bonded diatomic diphosphorus molecule (P2) should more closely mimic the attributes of acetylene (HC≡CH) rather than its group 15 congener dinitrogen (N2). Although acetylene has well-documented coordination chemistry with mononuclear transition metals, coordination complexes that feature P2 bound to a single metal center have remained elusive. We report the isolation and x-ray crystallographic characterization of a mononuclear iron complex featuring P2 coordination in a side-on, η2-binding mode. An analogous η2-bound bis-timethylsilylacetylene iron complex is reported for comparison. Nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and Mössbauer spectroscopic analysis-in conjunction with density functional theory calculations-demonstrate that η2-P2 and η2-acetylene ligands exert a similar electronic demand on mononuclear iron centers but exhibit different reactivity profiles.

Abstract

The
intermediacy of metallacyclobutadienes as part of a [2 + 2]/retro-[2
+ 2] cycloaddition-based mechanism is a well-established paradigm
in alkyne metathesis with alternative species viewed as off-cycle
decomposition products that interfere with efficient product formation.
Recent work has shown that the exclusive intermediate isolated from
a siloxide podand-supported molybdenum-based catalyst was not the
expected metallacyclobutadiene but instead a dynamic metallatetrahedrane.
Despite their paucity in the chemical literature, theoretical work
has shown these species to be thermodynamically more stable as well
as having modest barriers for cycloaddition. Consequentially, we report
the synthesis of a library of group VI alkylidynes as well as the
roles metal identity, ligand flexibility, secondary coordination sphere,
and substrate identity all have on isolable intermediates. Furthermore,
we report the disparities in catalyst competency as a function of
ligand sterics and metal choice. Dispersion-corrected DFT calculations
are used to shed light on the mechanism and role of ligand and metal
on the intermediacy of metallacyclobutadiene and metallatetrahedrane
as well as their implications to alkyne metathesis.

Abstract
Dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene-substituted diazene MesN2PA (1, where Mes = mesityl, A = anthracene, or C14H10), a synthetic equivalent of mesitylphosphaazide (MesN2P) and anthracene, was synthesized by treatment of [Ph3BPA][Na(OEt2)2] with [MesN2]OTf (OTf = CF3SO3-) in thawing tetrahydrofuran (14% isolated yield). Treatment of 1 with unsaturated molecules cyclooctyne, [Na(dioxane)2.5][OCP] (phosphaethynolate), and Ad-C≡P (Ad = adamantyl) results in the corresponding [3 + 2] phosphaazide-(phospha)alkyne cycloadducts, with concomitant loss of anthracene in 65%, 49%, and 38% isolated yield, respectively. Structural data for the phosphaethynolate cycloadduct ([3][Na(12-crown-4)2]) were obtained in a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. A diazatriphosphole was generated by combining 1 with P2A2, a thermally activated anthracene-based molecular precursor to diphosphorus (P2). Thermolysis (33-65 °C) of 1 in benzene-d6 leads to anthracene extrusion. This process has a unimolecular kinetic profile and proceeds with activation parameters of ΔH⧧ = 21.6 ± 0.3 kcal/mol and ΔS⧧= -4.9 ± 0.8 cal/(mol K).

Abstract
Room temperature reaction of the uranium(iv)-carbene [U{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}(BIPMTMS)(μ-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(μ-TMEDA)0.5]2 (1, BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2) with white phosphorus (P4) produces the organo-P5 compound [P5{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}2][Li(TMEDA)2] (2) and the uranium(iv)-methanediide [U{BIPMTMS}{Cl}{μ-Cl}2{Li(TMEDA)}] (3). This is an unprecedented example of cooperative metal-carbene P4 activation/insertion into a metal-carbon double bond and also an actinide complex reacting with P4 to directly form an organophosphorus species. Conducting the reaction at low temperature permits the isolation of the diuranium(iv) complex [{U(BIPMTMS)([μ-η2:η2-P2]C[SiMe3][PPh2])}2] (4), which then converts to 2 and 3. Thus, surprisingly, in contrast to all other actinide P4 reactivity, although this reaction produces catenation overall it proceeds via P4 cleavage to functionalised P2 units. Hence, this work establishes a proof of concept synthetic cycle for direct fragmentation, catenation, and functionalisation of P4.

Abstract
The first isolation and structural characterization of an f-element dinitrogen complex was reported in 1988, but an f-element complex with the first heavier group 15 homologue diphosphorus has to date remained unknown. Here, we report the synthesis of a side-on bound diphosphorus complex of uranium(IV) using a 7λ3-(dimethylamino)phosphadibenzonorbornadiene-mediated P atom transfer approach. Experimental and computational characterization reveals that the diphosphorus ligand is activated to its dianionic (P2)2- form and that in-plane U-P π-bonding dominates the bonding of the U(μ-η2:η2-P2)U unit, which is supplemented by a weak U-P interaction of δ symmetry. A preliminary reactivity study demonstrates conversion of this diphosphorus complex to unprecedented uranium cyclo-P3 complexes, suggesting in situ generation of transient, reactive phosphido species.

Abstract
Recently there has been great interest in the reactivity of transition-metal (TM) centers towards white phosphorus (P4 ). This has ultimately been motivated by a desire to find TM-mediated alternatives to the current industrial routes used to transform P4 into myriad useful P-containing products, which are typically indirect, wasteful, and highly hazardous. Such a TM-mediated process can be divided into two steps: activation of P4 to generate a polyphosphorus complex TM-Pn , and subsequent functionalization of this complex to release the desired phosphorus-containing product. The former step has by now become well established, allowing the isolation of many different TM-Pn products. In contrast, productive functionalization of these complexes has proven extremely challenging and has been achieved only in a relative handful of cases. In this review we provide a comprehensive summary of successful TM-Pn functionalization reactions, where TM-Pn must be accessible by reaction of a TM precursor with P4 . We hope that this will provide a useful resource for continuing efforts that are working towards this highly challenging goal of modern synthetic chemistry.

Abstract
A series of unique C2P3-ring compounds [(ADCAr)P3] (4) are readily accessible in an almost quantitative yield by the direct functionalization of white phosphorus (P4) with appropriate anionic dicarbenes [Li(ADCAr)].
A series of unique C2P3-ring compounds [(ADCAr)P3] (ADCAr = ArC{(DippN)C}2; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; Ar = Ph 4a, 3-MeC6H44b, 4-MeC6H44c, and 4-Me2NC6H44d) are readily accessible in an almost quantitative yield by the direct functionalization of white phosphorus (P4) with appropriate anionic dicarbenes [Li(ADCAr)]. The formation of 1,2,3-triphosphol-2-ides (4a–4d) suggests unprecedented [3 + 1] fragmentation of P4 into P3+ and P–. The P3+ cation is trapped by the (ADCAr)– to give 4, while the putative P– anion reacts with additional P4 to yield the Li3P7 species, a useful reagent in the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds. Remarkably, the P4 fragmentation is also viable with the related mesoionic carbenes (iMICsAr) (iMICAr = ArC{(DippN)2CCH}, i stands for imidazole-based) giving rise to 4. DFT calculations reveal that both the C3N2 and C2P3-rings of 4 are 6π-electron aromatic systems. The natural bonding orbital (NBO) analyses indicate that compounds 4 are mesoionic species featuring a negatively polarized C2P3-ring. The HOMO–3 of 4 is mainly the lone-pair at the central phosphorus atom that undergoes σ-bond formation with a variety of metal-electrophiles to yield complexes [{(ADCAr)P3}M(CO)n] (M = Fe, n = 4, Ar = Ph 5a or 4-Me-C6H45b; M = Mo, n = 5, Ar = Ph 6; M = W, n = 5, Ar = 4-Me2NC6H47).

Abstract
Experimentally known adducts of SO2 with transition metal complexes have distinct geometries. In the present paper, we demonstrate by a bonding analysis that this is a direct consequence of sulfur dioxide acting as an acceptor in one set, square-planar complexes of d(8) and linear two-coordinated complexes of d(10) transition metals, and as a donor with other compounds, well-known paddle-wheel [Rh2(O2CCF3)4] and square-pyramidal [M(CO)5] (M = Cr, W) complexes. Bonding energy computations were augmented by the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and energy decomposition analysis (EDA). When the SO2 molecule acts as an acceptor, bonding in the bent coordination mode to the axial position of the d(8) or the d(10) metal center, the dominant contributor to the bonding is LAO(S) (Lewis Acidic Orbital, mainly composed of the px-orbital of the S atom) as an acceptor, while a dz(2) orbital centered on the metal is the corresponding donor. In contrast, the distinct collinear (or linear) coordination of the SO2 bound at the axial position of [Rh2(O2CCF3)4] and/or [M(CO)5] is associated with a dominant donation from a lone pair localized on the sulfur atom, σ*(Rh-Rh) and/or empty LAO(M) (mainly composed of the dz(2) orbital of the metal), respectively, acting as an acceptor orbital. The donor/acceptor capabilities of the SO2 molecule were also checked in adducts with organic Lewis acids (BH3, B(CF3)3) and Lewis bases (NH3, N(CH3)3, N-heterocyclic carbene).

Abstract
This perspective summarizes recent results, which demonstrate that stable carbenes can activate small molecules (CO, H(2), NH(3) and P(4)) and stabilize highly reactive intermediates (main group elements in the zero oxidation state and paramagnetic species). These two tasks were previously exclusive for transition metal complexes.

Abstract
While P(4) is the stable molecular form of phosphorus, a recent study illustrated the possibility of P(2) generation for reactions in organic media under mild conditions. The heavier group 15 element arsenic can exist as As(4) molecules, but As(4) cannot be stored as a pure substance because it is both light-sensitive and reverts thermally to its stable, metallic gray form. Herein we report As(4) activation giving rise to a mu-As(2) diniobium complex, serving in turn as precursor to a terminal arsenide anion complex of niobium. Functionalization of the latter provides the new AsPNMes* ligand, which when complexed with tungsten pentacarbonyl elicits extrusion of the (AsP)W(CO)(5) molecule as a reactive intermediate. Trapping reactions of the latter with organic dienes are found to furnish double Diels-Alder adducts in which the AsP unit is embedded in a polycyclic organic framework. Thermal generation of (AsP)W(CO)(5) in the presence of the neutral terminal phosphide complex P identical withMo(N[(i)Pr]Ar)(3) leads to the cyclo-AsP(2) complex (OC)(5)W(cyclo-AsP(2))Mo(N[(i)Pr]Ar)(3). The (AsP)W(CO)(5) trapping products were crystallized and characterized by X-ray diffraction methods, and computational methods were applied for analysis of the As-As and As-P bonds in the complexes.
