Abstract
PURPOSE Particulate bovine bone substitutes (BS) are commonly used in oral regeneration. However, more literature is needed focusing on comparative analyses among various particulate bovine BS. This study evaluates pre-clinical and clinical data of different particulate bovine BS in oral regeneration. METHODS A narrative review was conducted by screening the PubMed database Included in the review were pre-clinical and clinical studies until 2024 comparing a minimum of two distinct particulate bovine BS. In addition to examining general data concerning manufacturing and treatment processes, biological safety, physical and chemical characteristics, and graft resorption, particular emphasis was placed on assessing pre-clinical and clinical data related to ridge preservation, sinus floor elevation, peri-implant defects, and various forms of alveolar ridge augmentation utilizing particulate bovine BS. RESULTS Various treatment temperatures ranging from 300 to 1,250 °C and the employment of chemical cleaning steps were identified for the manufacturing process of particulate bovine BS deemed to possess biosecurity. A notable heterogeneity was observed in the physical and chemical characteristics of particulate bovine BS, with minimal or negligible graft resorption. Variations were evident in particle and pore sizes and the porosity of particulate bovine BS. Pre-clinical assessments noted a marginal inclination towards favorable outcomes for particulate bovine BS subjected to higher treatment temperatures. However, clinical data are insufficient. No distinctions were observed regarding ridge preservation, while slight advantages were noted for high-temperature treated particulate bovine BS in sinus floor elevation. CONCLUSIONS Subtle variances in both pre-clinical and clinical outcomes were observed in across various particulate bovine BS. Due to inadequate data, numerous considerations related to diverse particulate bovine BS, including peri-implant defects, must be more conclusive. Additional clinical studies are imperative to address these knowledge gaps effectively.

Abstract
Clinical indications for the newly released Ti-Zr (Roxolid®) alloy mini-implants (MDIs) aimed for overdenture (OD) retention in subjects with narrow alveolar ridges are not fully defined. The aim of this study was to analyze peri-implant and posterior edentulous area microstrains utilizing models of the mandible mimicking a "real" mouth situation with two (splinted with a bar or as single units) or four unsplinted Ti-Zr MDIs. The models were virtually designed from a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan of a convenient patient and printed. The artificial mucosa was two millimeters thick. After MDI insertion, the strain gauges were bonded on the oral and vestibular peri-implant sites, and on distal edentulous areas under a denture. After attaching the ODs to MDIs, the ODs were loaded using a metal plate positioned on the first artificial molars (posterior loadings) bilaterally and unilaterally with 50, 100, and 150 N forces, respectively. During anterior loadings, the plate was positioned on the denture's incisors and loaded with 50 and 100 N forces. Each loading was repeated 15 times. The means with standard deviations, and the significance of the differences (two- and three-factor MANOVA) were calculated. Variations in the MDI number, location, and splinting status elicited different microstrains. Higher loading forces elicited higher microstrains. Unilateral loadings elicited higher microstrains than bilateral and anterior loadings, especially on the loading side. Peri-implant microstrains were lower in the four-MDI single-unit model than in both two-MDI models (unsplinted and splinted). Posterior implants showed higher peri-implant microstrains than anterior in the four-MDI model. The splinting of the two-MDI did not have a significant effect on peri-implant microstrains but elicited lower microstrains in the posterior edentulous area. The strains did not exceed the bone reparatory mechanisms, although precaution and additional study should be addressed when two Ti-Zr MDIs support mandibular ODs.

Abstract
The goal of this extension study was to compare the 10-year outcome of 3.3 mm diameter titanium-zirconium (TiZr) or grade IV titanium (Ti) implants in mandibular implant-overdentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is the 10-year follow-up from a randomised, controlled, double-blind, split-mouth multicentre clinical trial. Patients with edentulous mandibles had received two implants in the interforaminal region (bone-level, diameter 3.3 mm, microrough surface), one of TiZr (test) and one of Ti (control). Implant survival and success, plaque and sulcus bleeding indices, probing pocket depth, gingival margin, clinical attachment level and radiographic crestal bone levels were evaluated. RESULTS Fifty of 91 patients with implants were available for the 10-year examination and 36 patients were valid for the intent-to-treat (ITT) analysis. The implant success rate was calculated as 94.6% and 91.9% for the TiZr implants and the Ti implants respectively. Four implants were lost (TiZr = 1; Ti = 3) in the entire study period. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses estimated 10- year implant survival rate for TiZr to 98.9% and Ti 95.8%.The mean of total and functional crestal bone loss was 1.49 mm (±1.37 mm) and 0.82 mm (±1.09 mm) in the TiZr group and 1.56 mm (±1.34 mm) and 0.85 mm (±1.16 mm) in the Ti group. CONCLUSIONS This split-mouth design RCT on mandibular implant-overdentures evidenced, bearing in mind its follow-up time-related reduced cohort size, high 10-year implant success- and survival rates. These results confirm TiZr as well-suited implant material for realising small-diameter implants. Registered on www. CLINICALTRIALS gov: NCT01878331.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This retrospective study to evaluate the treatment outcomes of mandibular mini-implant overdentures (MIODs) placed under a two-step immediate loading protocol. BACKGROUND The mini-implant overdenture emphasises the advantages of simplicity using flapless surgery and immediate loading. However, some mini-implant have lowe initial stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 30 participants who used mandibular MIODs and maxillary removable complete dentures (RCDs) over 4 years were included. Four one-piece mini-implants (<3 mm in diameter) were placed by a flapless surgical approach after fabrication of new RCDs, and the O-ring attachment was attached at least 8 weeks after implant placement. RESULTS The average observation period was 58.9 ± 9.2 months after mini-implant loading. The survival rate of the implants was 100.0%, and the overall change in mean marginal bone level (ΔMBL) was -0.9 ± 1.1 mm. The implant success rate was 83.3% at the implant level, and 66.7% at the patient level. The mean initial Periotest value was 0.9 ± 3.1, and it was positively associated with ΔMBL and implant success (P < .05). Patient satisfaction improved after conversion from RCDs to MIODs (P < .05), and mastication and pain showed greater satisfaction with longer loading time (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The mandibular MIODs could be chosen as an alternative treatment under a two-step immediate-loading protocol in edentulous patients with limited alveolar bone volume. To ensure superior treatment outcomes of MIODs, initial stability of implant must be obtained using as wide a diameter as possible within the anatomically allowable limits.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The placement of narrow-diameter implants (NDIs) in the posterior region is still debated in view of the high biomechanical risks in these areas. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective observational study was to evaluate the success and survival rates of NDIs restored with fixed prostheses in the posterior region (primary outcome) and analyze whether splinting multiple units (prosthesis design) affects the biological and mechanical complications (secondary outcome). MATERIAL AND METHODS Dental records from 2 private clinics were reviewed for NDIs in the posterior region installed between 2009 and 2018. Ninety study participants (58 women and 32 men) aged between 21 and 84 years (mean age 49.9 years) were recalled for the assessment of implant survival and success of 160 NDIs previously provided for partial posterior edentulism associated with moderate horizontal bone loss or reduced interradicular space (105 premolars and 55 molars). The implants were restored with metal-ceramic single crowns or splinted multiple-unit prostheses, either screw-retained or cemented on custom (n=100) or stock titanium abutments (n=60). Peri-implant probing depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), bone quality, type of edentulism, and patient satisfaction were scored. The chi-squared test for independence and 2-sample Welch t test were performed for statistical analysis (α=.05). RESULTS The overall success rate was 89.37%. One implant had been removed 4 years after loading, another after 9 years, yielding a cumulative survival rate of 98.75%. Fourteen implants exhibited PPD > 5 mm. One implant and 1 abutment screw fractured, and 16 restorations demonstrated porcelain chipping. The chi-squared test showed no significant relationship between prosthetic design and complications whether biological (P=.087) or mechanical (P=.805). Eighty-two percent of patients were satisfied with esthetics, 76% with function, 85% with total duration of treatment, and 90% with overall treatment cost. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this retrospective study, NDIs may be considered a reliable option to replace posterior teeth. The prosthetic design had no significant impact on biological or mechanical complications.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this systematic review was to compare treatment outcomes in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between narrow-diameter implants and regular-diameter implants (RDIs) for mandibular implant overdentures (MIOs). METHODS This study was based on the methodology adapted as per Cochrane. Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for pertinent studies published by July 22, 2022. Outcome parameters included in this meta-analysis were implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, visual analogue scale score for patient satisfaction, and value of oral health impact profile. RESULTS A total of 782 non-duplicate articles and 83 clinical study registrations were identified from database and hand searches, of which 26 were eligible for full-text searches. Finally, 12 publications reporting on 8 independent studies were included in this review. In the meta-analysis, implant survival rate and marginal bone loss did not significantly differ between narrow-diameter implants and RDIs. Regarding RDIs, narrow-diameter implants were associated with significantly better outcomes in general patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life than RDIs for mandibular overdentures. CONCLUSIONS Narrow-diameter implants have competitive treatment outcomes compared to RDIs in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and PROMs. [Correction added on July 21, 2023, after first online publication: The abbreviation RDIs was changed to PROMs in the preceding sentence.] Thus, narrow-diameter implants might be an alternative treatment option for MIOs in situations with limited alveolar bone volume.

Abstract
Evidence is limited on whether titanium-zirconium alloy, narrow-diameter implants (Ti-Zr NDIs) have promising clinical outcomes when used to support single crowns. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate clinical evidence, including survival rates, success rates, and marginal bone loss (MBL) on Ti-Zr NDIs that support single crowns. An extensive search was performed in the databases of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published in English up to April 2022. Only peer-reviewed clinical studies with at least 10 patients and a follow-up time of at least 12 months were included. Risk of bias in each study was assessed and data extraction was carried out independently by two reviewers. The outcome variables were survival rates, success rates, and MBL. The search returned 779 results. Eight studies were identified for qualitative analysis and seven for quantitative synthesis. Overall, a total of 256 Ti-Zr NDIs were included. Cumulative implant survival rates and success rates were 97.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 94.5% to 98.9%) and 97.2% (95% CI: 94.2% to 98.7%), respectively, over a maximum follow-up period of 36 months, with no difference between Ti-Zr NDIs and commercial pure titanium (cpTi) implants. Cumulative mean (SD) MBL was 0.44 (0.04) mm (95% CI: 0.36 to 0.52) after one year. Meta-analysis of MBL indicated a mean difference of 0.02 mm (95% CI: -0.23 to 0.10), with no differences between Ti-Zr NDIs and cpTi implants. Short-term results of Ti-Zr NDIs for single-crown restorations are quite promising, although the number of published studies and follow-up periods are insufficient to determine the real benefit for single crowns. Long-term, follow-up clinical studies are needed to verify the excellent clinical performance of Ti-Zr NDIs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present systematic review was to test the hypothesis that the diameter of implants inserted in the posterior area affects implant survival rate, prosthetic survival rate and peri-implant parameters (bleeding on probing (BoP), marginal bone loss (MBL), pocket probing depth (PPD)). MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search of studies published until December 2021 was done on three databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane) independently by two authors. Clinical trials comparing implant survival rate, BoP, MBL and PPD among narrow diameter implants (NDI: ≥ 3.0 mm to < 3.75 mm) and regular diameter implants (RDI ≥ 3.75 mm to < 5 mm) were included. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers. Risk of bias was evaluated according to the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized studies and to the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools for non-randomized ones. A pair-wise meta-analysis was conducted on the included studies. RESULTS Seven articles were included out of the 4291 identified from the digital research. Overall, a total of 939 implants were inserted (319 NDI, 620 RDI). Only one study was judged at serious risk of bias. No statistically significant difference was found in implant survival rate (risk ratio 1.01 (95% CI [0.98 to 1.04], P = 0.67)) while the difference was significant for BoP (mean difference 2.89 (95% CI [0.30 to 5.48] mm, P = 0.03)) with higher values for NDI. Higher MBL was identified among regular diameter implants (mean difference -0.15 mm (95% CI [-0.32 to 0.01 mm], P = 0.07). No statistically significant differences were identified for prosthetic survival and PPD. CONCLUSIONS No differences were found in implant survival rate between narrow and regular implants. A higher BoP was identified among narrow implants, but there was no higher bone loss. It is not possible to draw definitive conclusions about the use of narrow-diameter implants in the posterior region.

Abstract
Introduction The use of dental implants provides a revolutionary solution to the problem of missing teeth in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to assess the early implant survival rate in relation to implant diameter and site of placement. Methods The data were collected from 186 patients treated between January 2019 and June 2021. All the implants were evaluated and restored after three months of implant placement. The early implant survival was calculated for different implant diameters with the odds ratio (OR). Results A total of 373 implants were placed. Implants were placed in the following areas: upper posterior area (UPA), n = 123, upper anterior area (UAA), n = 49, lower posterior area (LPA), n = 184, and lower anterior area (LAA), n = 17. Implants of the following diameters were placed: 3.5 mm (n = 129), 4.3 mm (n = 166), and 5 mm (n = 78). The overall early survival rate was 97.32% after three months of placement. The highest early survival rate was at LAA (100%) and the lowest early survival rate was at UAA (95.9%). The implants 5 mm in diameter had the highest early survival rate (98.72%), while the implants 3.5 mm in diameter had the lowest early survival rate (94.57%). The ORs of the early implant survival were 4.7 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.96-23.05)] and 4.42 (95% CI: 0.53-36.61) for the 4.3 mm and 5 mm implants, respectively, with no statistical significance. Conclusions The implants placed in the oral cavity had acceptable survival rates regardless of implant diameter or site of placement.

Abstract
Dental implants could give back function, esthetics and quality of life to patients. The correct choice of the implant, especially in borderline cases, is essential for a satisfactory result. Aim: Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of Morse taper implants with two different prosthetic interfaces. Methods: Twenty self-locking Morse taper implants, 2.9 mm in diameter (FAC), and 20 Morse taper implants, 3.5 mm in diameter (CM) were divided into two groups (n=10), and submitted to strength to failure test, optical microscopic evaluation of fracture, metallographic analysis of the alloy, finite element analysis (FEA) and strain gauge test. A Student’s t test (α = 0.05) was made for a statistical analysis. Results: For the strength to failure test, a statistically difference was observed (p <0.001) between FAC (225.0 ± 19.8 N) and CM (397.3 ± 12.5 N). The optical microscopic evaluation demonstrated a fracture pattern that corroborated with FEA´s results. The metallographic analysis determined that the implants of the FAC group have titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy in their composition. In the strain gauge test, there was no statistical difference (p = 0.833) between CM (1064.8 ± 575.04 μS) and FAC (1002.2 ± 657.6 μS) groups. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in this study, ultra-narrow implants (FAC) should ideally be restricted to areas with low masticatory effort.

Abstract
PURPOSE This in vitro study aimed to use failure stress and implant abutment interface (IAI) microgap size to find the compromised axial angle range of angulated zirconia abutments with a titanium base in narrow diameter implants in the esthetic region. MATERIALS AND METHODS A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of maxillary central incisor implant prosthesis was reconstructed. Angulated zirconia abutments (0°, 15°, 30°, and - 15°) with a titanium base in narrow diameter implants (3.3*12 mm, Bone level, Roxolid SLActive, Straumann AG, Switzerland) were designed to simulate clinical scenarios of buccal inclination 0°, 15°, and 30°, and palatal inclination 15° of the implant long axis. Straight titanium abutment and pure titanium implant were used as two control groups. An oblique force at 30° inclination to the long axis of the crown was applied 3 mm below the incisal edge on the palatal surface of the prosthesis. Under simulated dynamic chewing force, the stress distribution of the implant components and surrounding bone were investigated. The relative micromotion displacement between the implant and abutment models at the IAI area was recorded, and the influence of tightening torque on the IAI microgap was evaluated. RESULTS The angulation of the zirconia abutment could affect the stress value and IAI microgap of implant restorations. When the zirconia abutment angle increased from -15 °to 30°, the stress on the central screw, titanium base, and surrounding bone tissue gradually increased by 9%, 20%, and 23%, respectively. The stress levels of the 30° zirconia abutment group showed the risk of exceeding the threshold. When the long axis of the implant was inclined in the palatal direction, the -15° angle abutment reduced the stress by 3% and reduced the strain level of the implant system by 17% and the surrounding bone tissue by 26%. Under simulated dynamic chewing load, the displacement between the implants and the abutment occurred in each group of the implant system, and the amplitude of the micromotion fluctuated with the change in the load. The horizontal displacement caused a 0.075-1.459 μm palatal microgap and 0.091-0.945 μm distal microgap in the IAI. The microgap between the lip and palate was more evident, and the vertical displacement difference was manifested as the abutment sliding down the implant. CONCLUSIONS In cases of upper implant restoration with difficulties such as small gaps and axial defects in the esthetic zone, the abutment angle is highly recommended to be in a slightly palatal-inclined direction or to not exceed 15° when the implant is inclined to the labial side to avoid mechanical damage and leakage caused by the appearance of excessively large micromotion gaps. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the success and survival rates of dental implants used for dentomaxillary prostheses at our hospital and the risk factors associated with large bone defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 138 external joint system implants used for dentomaxillary prostheses in 40 patients with large bone defects were included in this study. The alveolar bone at the site of implant insertion was evaluated using panoramic radiography and computed tomography. Various risk factors (demographic characteristics, dental status, and operative factors such as the employment of alveolar bone augmentation, the site, the length, and diameter of implants) for implant failure and complete implant loss were investigated using univariate and multivariate analyses. The associations between the variables and the success and survival rates of dental implants were analyzed using the multivariate Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS The 10-year overall success and survival rates were 81.3% and 88.4% in this study. Multivariable analysis showed that the male sex (HR 6.22), shorter implants (≤ 8.5 mm) (HR 5.21), and bone augmentation (HR 2.58) were independent predictors of success rate. Bone augmentation (HR 5.14) and narrow implants (≤ 3.3 mm) (HR 3.86) were independent predictors of the survival rate. CONCLUSION Male sex, shorter or narrow implants, and bone augmentation were independent risk factors for dental implants used in dentomaxillary prostheses in patients with large bone defects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinicians should consider these risk factors and pay close attention to the management of these patients.

Abstract
Mini dental implants can be used to support crowns and partial and complete dentures in compromised edentulous sites. Lack of bone width or site length may be treated with mini implants. Mini implants have less percutaneous exposure and displacement that may reduce complications. Nonetheless, mini implants transmit about twice the load to the supporting bone, and thus, control of occlusal loading is important. In fixed prosthetics, rounded flat cusps, splinting, implant protective occlusal schemes, and placement only in dense bone sites are features of successful mini implant treatment. With removable prosthetics, multiple mini implants may be needed for appropriate retention and load resistance. Maxillary lateral incisor and mandibular incisor sites may be best suited for mini implant treatment. However, past research on dental implants has been directed at standard sized implants. While mini implants are indeed dental implants, they behave somewhat differently under functional load, and the clinician should be circumspect and very judicious in their use. This article is a mini review and not a systematic review. The topics covered are not pervasive because each would require a monograph or textbook for a complete discussion.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The aim of our study was to test whether wide diameter (6 mm) implants perform differently from standard diameter (4 mm) implants in terms of marginal bone level and survival rate. Materials and Methods: Our sample comprised 72 patients who underwent surgery; a total of 80 implants were placed in the maxillary or mandibular molar region. Patients were divided into two groups according to the diameter of the implant, and were followed up for six years after the final setting of the prosthetics. In the test group, 40 implants with 6-mm diameter were inserted; in the control group, 40 standard diameter implants were inserted. Using panoramic radiographs, we investigated mesial and distal marginal bone levels around the implant fixtures. Results: After the first implant surgery, three implants, including one wide diameter and two standard diameter implants, failed due to lack of osseointegration. We did not note any fixture fracture during the six-year follow-up. After loading, we observed a six-year survival rate of 97.29% with no statistically significant difference from standard diameter implants, with a survival rate of 94.87%. Conclusions: This study shows that 6-mm diameter implants may be considered in the presence of adequate alveolar ridge width in the posterior maxillary and mandibular regions.

Abstract
Currently, biophysical studies are of great interest, the results of which are important for development of a method for diagnosis of the cells and tissue condition to be used in clinical practice. The study was aimed to use a non-invasive optical method (Raman spectroscopy) for assessment of changes in the composition and conformation of the molecules of the patient’s mandibular cells and tissues. This approach was proposed to increase the informativeness and effectiveness of studying the composition of autografts harvested for augmentation of alveolar processes with bone tissue deficiency (elective bone grafting). In the course of the study the bone tissue samples obtained from three patients aged 51–73 (two men and one woman) were assessed. Raman signals were detected, indicating the presence of phosphate groups and carbonate ions (such as СО3–2) of the inorganic bone components. Raman bands indicating the presence of collagen, red blood cell hemoglobin, proteins (C–N bonds), lipids (С–Н groups of fatty acids and phosphate groups of phospholipids), as well as their OH groups may be considered the markers of periosteum tissue. The general possibility was suggested of studying single cells of autografts using the markers, indicating the presence of collagen, hemoglobin, proteins, lipids (С–Н groups of fatty acids of lipids; phosphate groups of phospholipids), and their OH groups. According to the authors, the results obtained can provide a basis for development of the new method for diagnosis of autograft bone using the combination of Raman spectroscopy and light guides.

Abstract
Background Osseodensification (OD) has shown to improve implant stability; however, the influences of implant design, dimensions, and surgical site characteristics are unknown. Purpose To compare the insertion torque (IT) and temporal implant stability quotients (ISQ) of implants placed via OD or subtractive drilling (SD). Materials and Methods This multicenter controlled clinical trial enrolled 56 patients, whom were in need of at least 2 implants (n = 150 implants). Patients were treated with narrow, regular, or wide implants and short, regular, or long implants in the anterior or posterior region of the maxilla or in the posterior region of the mandible. Osteotomies were performed following manufacturers recommendation. IT was recorded with a torque indicator. ISQ was recorded with resonance frequency analysis immediately after surgery, 3 and 6 weeks. Results Data complied as a function of osteotomy indicated significantly higher IT for OD relative to SD. OD outperformed conventional SD for all pairwise comparisons of arches (maxilla and mandible) and areas operated (anterior and posterior), diameters and lengths of the implants, except for short implants. Overall, ISQ data also demonstrated significantly higher values for OD compared to SD regardless of the healing period. Relative to immediate readings, ISQ values significantly decreased at 3 weeks, returning to immediate levels at 6 weeks; however, ISQ values strictly remained above 68 throughout healing time for OD. Data as a function of arch operated and osteotomy, area operated and osteotomy, implant dimensions and osteotomy, also exhibited higher ISQ values for OD relative to SD on pairwise comparisons, except for short implants. Conclusions OD demonstrated higher IT and temporal ISQ values relative to SD, irrespective of arch and area operated as well as implant design and dimension, with an exception for short implants. Future studies should focus on biomechanical parameters and bone level change evaluation after loading.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Patients diagnosed with a cleft palate often have a congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor. The congenital cleft presents the practitioner with challenges including the quantity and quality of bone, a surgically managed cleft correction, and limited clinical space. PURPOSE The purpose of the present prospective investigation was to report preliminary results at the 1-year follow-up for this planned 5-year investigation of narrow diameter implants used to restore a missing lateral incisor in patients with a cleft palate. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fourteen study participants with a cleft palate and a missing maxillary lateral incisor were enrolled based on established criteria. Narrow diameter implants (AstraTech OsseoSpeed TX 3.0S and 3.5 mm) were placed by using a 2-stage protocol and restored. All study participants received an Atlantis abutment and a cement-retained crown. Four probing depth measurements and bleeding on probing were measured at baseline and at 1 year. Probing depth measurements were evaluated using a 2-way repeated measures ANOVA with Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons tests. Radiographic marginal bone loss was measured at 1-year by using a digital subtraction technique and evaluated by using a repeated measures ANOVA. Pretreatment cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were used to measure a mean gray level that was proportional to bone mineral density (BMD) in the implant site. One-way mixed ANOVA was used to compare the mean gray level and average implant stability quotient (ISQ) loading. A Pearson correlation was also tested between those parameters (α=.05) for each statistical analysis. RESULTS The mean marginal bone loss at 1 year was 0.601 ±0.48 mm. Regarding probing depth measurements, a 2-way repeated measures ANOVA found both the location (P=.012) and time (P=.009) were significant. The Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons test showed a significant difference between the buccal and distal site (P=.006) from baseline to 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Narrow diameter implants are a reliable treatment for replacing a missing lateral incisor in patients with a cleft palate at 1 year, with an implant survival rate of 100% and implant success rate of 94% using the established criteria. A negative association was found between the bone mineral density and the implant stability in the alveolar cleft site of a patient with a cleft palate. The peri-implant soft tissue probe depths exhibited significant change during the first year.

Abstract
A novel ceria-stabilized zirconia-alumina-aluminate composite (Ce-TZP-comp) that is not prone to aging presents a potential alternative to yttrium-stabilized zirconia for ceramic oral implants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of a one-piece narrow-diameter implant made of Ce-TZP-comp. Implant prototypes with a narrow (3.4 mm) and regular (4.0 mm) diameter were embedded according to ISO 14801, and subgroups (n = 8) were subsequently exposed to dynamic loading (107 cycles, 98N) and/or hydrothermal treatment (aging, 85 °C). Loading/aging was only applied as a combined protocol for the 4.0 mm diameter implants. One subgroup of each diameter remained untreated. One sample was cross-sectioned from each subgroup and evaluated with a scanning electron microscope for phase-transformation of the lattice. Finally, the remaining samples were loaded to fracture. A multivariate linear regression model was applied for statistical analyses (significance at p < 0.05). All samples withstood the different loading/aging protocols and no transformation propagation was observed. The narrow diameter implants showed the lowest fracture load after combined loading/aging (628 ± 56 N; p < 0.01), whereas all other subgroups exhibited no significantly reduced fracture resistance (between 762 ± 62 and 806 ± 73 N; p > 0.05). Therefore, fracture load values of Ce-TZP-comp implants suggest a reliable intraoral clinical application in the anterior jaw regions.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Displacement of abutments into conical connection implants during screw tightening may also occur during functional loading, creating unsettling forces that may cause loss of preload. A recent conical-hexagon connection with double friction fit (conical-hexagon connection) could prevent this axial displacement. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to measure the 3D axial displacement of abutments with a conical-hexagon connection or conical connection in narrow-diameter implants. Removal torque values (RTVs), preload efficiency, and survival after cyclic loading were also compared. MATERIAL AND METHODS Narrow-diameter implants with a conical connection (Osseospeed EV, 3.0×13 mm-AST) and narrow-diameter implants with a conical-hexagon connection (Eztetic, 3.1×13 mm) were embedded in resin rods (G10) (n=6). Six titanium abutments per system were used, and their spatial relationship to the implant platforms after hand tightening was determined by using 3D digital image correlation. The abutments were tightened to the manufacturers' specified values, and the abutments' relative position was recorded again. The displacement of the abutment after tightening was calculated. The implants were subjected to cyclic loading (5×106 cycles at 2 Hz) under 200-N loads at a 30-degree angle. After cyclic loading, the RTVs of screws were measured and compared with those specified by the manufacturers to calculate preload efficiency. ANOVA was used to compare the differences in displacements after tightening and to compare differences in RTVs after cyclic loading across the groups (α=.05). RESULTS The mean displacement in the U direction (X-axis) for the AST was -0.7 μm and -4.7 μm for ZIM, with no statistical difference (P=.73). The mean displacement in the V direction (Y-axis) for AST was -37.0 μm, and -150.0 μm for ZIM, with significant statistical difference (P<.001). The mean displacement in the W direction (Z-axis) for AST was -0.9 μm, and -23.0 μm for ZIM, with no statistical difference (P=.35). The survival of groups was similar (P=.058). During cyclic loading, 3 AST specimens fractured. After cyclic loading, mean RTV for AST was -8.77 Ncm, and -14.24 Ncm for ZIM, and these values were significantly different (P=.04). Preload efficiency was 28.1% for AST and 41.5% for ZIM. CONCLUSIONS Greater abutment displacements were observed with the conical-hexagon connection, which required a higher torque, as specified by its manufacturer. The abutments displaced more in the V-axis in both implants. Only the conical connection implant (Ti Grade 4, commercially pure) had failures during cyclic loading, but the survival of the implants was similar. After cyclic loading, the abutment screws in both systems lost some of their torque value. The abutment screws of the conical-hexagon connection implant maintained preload more efficiently during cyclic loading than those of the conical connection implant.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate studies comparing implant survival rates, marginal bone loss (MBL), and mechanical and biological complication rates between narrow-diameter implants (NDIs) and regular-diameter implants (RDIs) used for oral rehabilitation in the anterior region. The review was conducted according to the PRISMA checklist. Two independent reviewers performed a comprehensive search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases for studies published until May 2020. A total of 843 implants (484 NDIs and 359 RDIs) were included. No significant difference in implant survival rate (risk difference (RD) 0.01, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.01 to 0.03; P=0.34), MBL (standardised mean difference -0.51mm, 95% CI -1.29 to 0.26mm; P=0.19), mechanical complications (RD 0.01, 95% CI -0.02 to 0.04; P=0.40), or biological complications (RD 0.01, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.11; P=0.85) was found between the implant groups. Within the limitations of this study, it is concluded that NDIs are an effective alternative to RDIs due to similar survival rates, MBL, and mechanical and biological complication rates. However, future studies are highly encouraged due to the small number of interventional studies on this topic.

Abstract
Background: Free-handed, flaplessly placed mini dental implants (MDIs) are a valuable, more affordable and minimally invasive treatment to support overdentures in fully edentulous jaws, especially for medically compromised patients. However, critical 3D radiographic evaluation is lacking. This multicenter prospective case series assessed clinical outcome and carried out 3D- cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) analysis of free-handed flaplessly placed one-piece maxillary MDIs by an experienced maxillofacial surgeon. Methods: Thirty-one patients suffering from an ill-fitting maxillary denture relating to compromised bone volume (as confirmed on CBCT), with a dentate mandible, were selected. They received 5–6 MDIs free-hand flaplessly placed and mentally guided with preoperative CBCT. Final connection and attachment activation took place six months later. After two years each implant was individually assessed with CBCT for perforations on eight sites. Implant survival, prosthetic failure, clinical stability and sinus/nasal complaints were registered after three years. Results: 32/185 (17.3%) MDIs failed during the provisional loading with non-activated attachments; 17 replacements in 10 patients were performed. Of the 170 actively loaded 170 MDIs, 82.3% survived and 27/31 prostheses (87%) were fully functional. In total 98/170 MDIs showed no perforation. Based on 1360 CBCT observations, 231 perforations (16.9%) were registered. Of most perforations 37 (25%) were observed at the apical tip and 37 were positioned (21%) into the sinus/nasal cavity, although without clinical complaints. Conclusions: Given the compromised population, the minimally invasive procedure and the low treatment cost involved, a failure rate of 17% is substantial, however clinically acceptable given the critical bone condition. However, even in experienced surgical hands, freehanded and flapless placement yield a high risk for implant perforation, although this did not necessarily lead to complications.

Abstract
Mini dental implants (MDI) have proven to be a good alternative of the conventional implants to support lower overdentures in elderly edentulous patients with narrow residual ridge. The aim of the present study was to define drilling protocols for each diameter of the MDI in each bone quality. The number and the diameter of the drilling bur and the drilling depth was investigated. A total of 48 MDIs with a ball head and transgingival collar were used to the drilling protocol in four different bone qualities (Q1-Q4). All available four diameters of the implants were included: 1.8mm, 2.1mm, 2.4mm, and 2.9mm. The length of all implants was 15mm. Three different protocols were prepared for each of the four bone qualities and for each implant diameter. The insertion torques and the primary stability of the implants were measured in their final position. Regardless of implant diameter and bone quality, the insertion torque was significantly higher using drilling protocol 1 than 3 and using drilling protocol 2 than 3 as well. The insertion torque was significantly higher in bone quality Q1 than in Q2-Q4. The unscrewing resulted in considerably increase in the torque, which exceeded the insertion torques by up to two times. This repeatedly led to the bending and fractures of implants.

Abstract
Background: This narrative review provides an evidence-based overview of the comparison between mini-dental implants (MDI) and conventional dental implants for definitive prosthesis retention. In addition, recommendations are made on whether the use of reduced diameter dental implants is more appropriate. Method: A literature review was conducted via electronic search addressing the following topics: (1) osseointegration, (2) peri-implant soft tissue characteristics, (3) biomechanics, (4) implant survival and (5) implant success. Conclusion: The procedure for dental implant prosthetic rehabilitation should preferentially include conventional dental implants (i.e. [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mm fixture diameter). Small (3-3.25[Formula: see text]mm) and narrow (3.3-3.5[Formula: see text]mm) dental implants should primarily be used in non-load-bearing regions. MDI ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mm) should be considered to retain definitive prosthesis, only for reasons of anatomy or patient-centred preferences and as a last resort. If MDI are to be used, patients should be made aware of the lack of long-term, high-quality evidence as a part of the informed consent process and that most of the prospective data available pertain to MDI retaining complete dentures.

Abstract
Sixty-four fractured commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) narrow dental implants (NDIs) with similar macrogeometry and connection designs were studied after different implantation times in humans in order to determine their reliability and to evaluate the causes of the fracture. These NDIs were compared with other similar implants, made with alloyed titanium with 15% Zr and with 12% strained titanium. Original implants were tested under static and fatigue conditions, simulating the tri-axial loads in the mouth by means of a Bionix hydraulic test machine. Fractography was studied using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FSEM). The results showed that cp-Ti NDI exhibits low strength for mechanical cycling, and the alloyed Ti and strained titanium increase the mechanical strength, guaranteeing long term mechanical behavior. NDIs fractured due to fatigue, and, in some cases, the presence of cracks in the original NDIs quickly led to fracture. These cracks were attributed to plastic deformation during machining were found to be exacerbated due to acid etching in the passivation process. All cases of fracture were cp-Ti dental implants due to the low fatigue limit. The results show that, when titanium is alloyed or cold-worked, the fatigue limit is higher than cp-Ti. This in vitro research will help clinicians to select a better NDI system for safer treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze 1- and 3-year clinical performances of narrow diameter implants (NDIs) versus regular diameter implants (RDIs). A search of electronic databases and a manual search was performed for the time period January 2000 to April 2018. A meta-regression was used to evaluate the effects of the "fixed effects" model on the implant survival rates, prosthesis success rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) with follow-up time of 1 year and 3 years. Of the 11 studies included, the overall combined 1-year implant survival rates were 98.14% for NDIs and 98.20% for RDIs. The overall combined 3-year implant survival rates were 98.71% for NDIs and 98.84% for RDIs. The corresponding values for 1-year prosthesis success rates were 96.94% for NDIs and 99.25% for RDIs. The corresponding values for 3-year prosthesis success rates were 89.25% for NDIs and 96.55% for RDIs. The meta-regression showed no significant differences between NDIs and RDIs regarding implant survival rates, prosthesis success rates, and MBL in 1-year and 3-year follow-up (P > .05). The results of this meta-analysis concluded that the implant diameter did not affect its survival rates, prosthesis success rates, and MBL in 1 and 3 years. The use of NDIs instead of bone augmentation procedures with RDIs did not affect its survival rates, prosthesis success rates, and MBL in the short-term and middle-term. However, more high-quality randomized controlled trials and long follow-up studies are needed on this topic.

Abstract
The researchers investigated the influence of low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) on implant stability and marginal bone of small-diameter implants retaining mandibular overdentures in patients with moderately controlled diabetes. Twenty patients (mean age = 59.32 ± 4.1 years) with moderately controlled diabetes mellitus (glycated hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c] = 8.1%-10.0 %) were rehabilitated by maxillary and mandibular conventional dentures. Two small-diameter implants (3 × 12 mm) were inserted in the canine areas of the mandible and immediately loaded by mandibular dentures. In a split-mouth design, LLLI was applied to 1 of the 2 implants in a random order (study group [SG]); the other implant was left as a control (control group [CG]). For each patient, gallium aluminum-arsenide diode low-level laser (940-nm wavelength, 0.50 ± 2 mW output power, 0.004 cm2 spot size; Epic, Biolase, Inc, San Clemente, Calif) was applied around each implant with total delivered energy of 90 J (equally divided by 6 irradiation points) in 3 sessions. The application was done immediately after implant insertion, 3 days and 1 week after surgery. Implant stability (measured by Periotest) and marginal bone loss (MBL; measured by cone beam computerized tomography) were evaluated at implant loading (T1), 6 months (T6), and 12 months (T12). One implant failed in the CG and no failures occurred in the SG, resulting in 95% and 100% survival rates, respectively. The SG recorded higher Periotest values than the CG at all observation times. However, the difference was significant (P = .039) at T6 only. The SG recorded lower MBL values than the CG. No difference in MBL was detected between groups or peri-implant sites (mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual) at T6 and T12. Within the limits of this study, LLLI had no effect on marginal bone around immediately loaded small-diameter implants retaining overdentures in patients with moderately controlled diabetes. However, it was beneficial in improving implant stability 6 months after overdenture insertion.

Abstract
Edentulous sites are often characterized by inadequate bone volume for dental implant therapy. Bone augmentation procedures for site development involve longer healing period and are often invasive, costly, and associated with postoperative morbidity. This article discusses alternatives to invasive bone grafting procedures that are often used to develop implant sites. Owing to the broad nature of this topic, it is presented in two articles. In part I, the use of short and narrow-diameter implants are discussed. Part II reviews the use of tilted as well as fewer implants to support a prosthesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies assessing peri-implant clinical and marginal bone resorption (MBR) around narrow diameter implants (NDIs) placed in different glycemic levels are uninvestigated. OBJECTIVE The present 3-year retrospective follow-up investigation was designed to explore clinical and radiographic status of NDIs placed in individuals with different glycemic control levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels ≥6.5% (Group-1), 5.7%-6.4% (Group-2), and 4.0%-5.0% (Group-3) were included. Clinical indices evaluating bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque scores (PI), peri-implant probing depth (PD), and MBR were recorded around NDIs at 1-, 2-, and 3-year follow-up. Serum HbA1c test was carried out for all patients to assess the profile of glycosylated hemoglobin at 1 and 3 years of follow-up. RESULTS A significant reduction in mean HbA1c levels from year 1 to year 3 follow-up period was seen in Group-1 only. PI varied from 0.40 in Group 1 at 2 year and 0.42 at 3-year follow-up to 0.18 at 2-year (P = 0.032) and 0.17 at 3-year (P = 0.018) follow-up, respectively. Greater BOP was noted in Group 1 (0.53) as compared with Group 2 (0.42) and Group 3 (0.21) (P = 0.048) at 3-year follow-up. PD after 3 year ranged from 2.04 mm in Group 3 to 2.32 mm in Group 1 that showed statistically significant difference (P = 0.037). No statistical significant differences were observed in MBR at any time point between the groups. CONCLUSION The results of this short-term follow-up study indicate that NDIs show clinical and radiographic stability, provided oral cleanliness and glycemic levels are relatively maintained. Further long-term clinical studies are needed to evaluate implant stability over the period along with controlled glycemic status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Small-diameter implants (SDIs: diameter <3.5 mm) are often chosen as an alternative to bone augmentation in clinical practice, but the scientific evidence regarding SDI application in the posterior area remains deficient. PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of SDIs supporting fixed prostheses without bone augmentation in the posterior region, and to analyze the potential influencing factors related to SDI failures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical and radiographic data of 243 SDIs in 156 patients were retrospectively assembled after 2 to 12 (mean 4.75) years of follow-up. Implant and prosthesis failures, mechanical and biological complications, and radiographic marginal bone loss (MBL) were evaluated. The influence of patient/implant characteristics and prosthetic design on SDI failures was investigated. RESULTS Five implants in five patients failed, contributing to 10-year cumulative survival rates of 97.9% on an implant-based analysis and 96.8% on a patient-based analysis. Biological complications and mechanical complications were detected in 22 (9.1%) and 31 (12.8%) of implants, respectively. No implant fracture was detected. Peri-implant MBL during 10 years was 0.60 ± 0.90 mm on average. The implant type (bone-level or tissue-level) was the only factor that significantly influenced SDI failures. CONCLUSION SDIs supporting fixed prostheses in the posterior region achieved predictable long-term clinical outcomes. However, tissue-level titanium SDIs should be avoided where possible.

Abstract
Molecular mechanism governing inflammatory scenario in response to titanium (Ti)-nanotexturing surfaces needs to be better addressed. Thus, we subjected pre-osteoblast to different Ti-texturing surfaces, as follows: machined (Mac), double acid-etching (DAE), and nanoscaled hydroxyapatite-blasted titanium surface (nHA), considering the cells chronically responding either directly (when the cells were cultured onto the surfaces) or indirectly (when the cells were challenged with the conditioned medium by the surfaces), up to 10 days. Our results showed that there is a dynamic requirement of inflammatory-related genes activation in response to nHA by up expressing IL1ß, IL6, IL10, and IL33 (direct condition) and IL6, IL10, IL18 (indirect condition). Importantly, our data show that there is inflammasome involvement, once NLRP3, ASC1, and CASP1 genes were also required. As we found a strong signal of IL10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine, we further investigated Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signaling cascade. Surprisingly, Shh ligand and Smoothened (Smo) genes were up-modulated in response to nHA, while Patched (Ptc) was down-modulated. Finally, an interactome was built using bioinformatics reinforcing Shh signaling cascade on modulating IL10 transcripts by Src mediating this process and this prevalence of anti-inflammatory picture might explain the low profile of RANKL transcripts in response to nHA, compromising the osteoclastogenesis surrounding the implants. Taking our results into account, our data show that the inflammatory landscape promoted by nHA is strictly modulated by Shh signaling promoted anti-inflammatory pathways. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
The article presents the analysis of possible options of dental implant surgical treatment of partially edentulous patients with insufficient alveolar bone volume in the period from 2008 to 2017 (n=1004). Highlighted are three main options for surgical treatment: a staged approach, including alveolar ridge augmentation, subsequent dental implantation (n=562); dental implantation with simultaneous alveolar ridge augmentation (n=362); using of 'narrow/short' dental implants (n=80). The data on the frequency of intra - and postoperative complications before prosthetics are given. Over the past period, there has been a declining tendency in the number of staged procedures with an increase in the number of simultaneous operations installations of 'narrow/short' implants.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction The long-term implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation monitoring is extremely important in evaluating parameters that could interfere in the success of the treatment. Objective To evaluate the influence of macrodesign (shape of the body and apex), length and diameter, insertion torque, site of installation as well as the loading protocol, on long-term survival rates. Material and method The data obtained was from the medical records of rehabilitated patients who had had at least one Morse taper implant surgery done at ILAPEO School between 2006 -2012. Incomplete medical records, from which it would have been impossible to extract all data essential to complete the study, were excluded. Result A total of 1,142 patient’s medical records comprised the sample; documenting the progress of 5,601 implants, done in both jaws and mandibles. The final survival rate was 98.31%, over an average time of 37.54 months. The type of implant most used was cylindrical (70.33%). The mean installation torque most evidenced in the study was between 41 and 50 Ncm. A logistical regression analysis showed that none of the following variables, site of installation, body and apex shape designs and length, had any significant statistical influence on implant loss. Torque increase and diameter influenced implant loss while immediate loading favored implant maintenance. Conclusion It can be concluded that Morse taper implants present a long-term survival rate that can be lowered by excessive torque, as well as by the diameter of the implant.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION For many years, edentulous patients have had no other option than conventional dentures to reestablish their oral function. To avoid the need for bone graft surgery, some professionals have suggested the use of mini dental implants (MDIs) to support prostheses. The MDIs are narrow implants, ranging approximately from 1.8 to 2.9 mm in diameter. Recently, the promising results of mini implants regarding osseointegration and patient satisfaction have led clinicians to accept them as a definitive treatment option. OBJECTIVE Therefore, the proposition of this systematic review was to assess information on the outcomes of MDIs supporting removable prostheses. METHODS The PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for articles published before September 2017, which yielded a total of 774 studies for analysis. After exclusion and inclusion criteria, 22 prospective studies were included in this systematic review. RESULTS Most mini implants were placed in a flapless single-stage surgery and loaded immediately. Most studies reported failures in the first year and prosthetic complications. The mean survival rate of the selected studies was 95.6%, and mean follow-up was 22.8 months. CONCLUSION The MDI-supported removable prostheses successfully improved patients' chewing and speaking ability, quality of life, and satisfaction, suggesting that MDIs are a viable and safe option to support removable prostheses in the mandibular arch.

Abstract
Deficient bone volume, anatomical limitations, lack of available mesiodistal space, adjacent teeth angulations, and surgical errors may lead to placement of narrow diameter implants. In such a scenario, functional and esthetic-yet sustainable-replacement of more than one missing tooth becomes quite challenging. This article describes the successful restoration of missing both mandibular central incisors on one 3-mm single-piece implant in 3 patients. Despite being a biomechanically complex presentation, the objectives of optimal outcome were achieved in all 3 patients by means of innovative design, fine control of occlusal factors, and correct choice of restorative material. Until the last follow-up at 5 years, no implant or prostheses loss was experienced.

Abstract
PURPOSE Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitations are in constant augmentation in everyday dental practice. This is largely due to increasing demand from patients for fixed or implant-stabilized prosthesis, although they are frequently reticent to complex preimplant bone augmentation surgeries, whenever bone volume is lacking. Narrow-diameter implants (NDI; ≤3.5 mm) have been developed to offer relatively simple implant solutions in challenging bone-deficient sites. However, concerns regarding their mechanical properties have been raised. Special titanium-zirconium material (Ti-Zr), with superior mechanical resistance, compared with pure titanium alloys has been introduced into the market. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the available data on clinical performance of Ti-Zr NDI. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search of all available clinical articles dealing with Ti-Zr NDI has been carried out. After including only prospective clinical trials, 14 papers were retrieved for thorough reviewing. CONCLUSION Short-term results from preliminary clinical reports are quite promising, although the number of published studies and the follow-up periods are still insufficient to determine the real benefit of this hybrid material compared with titanium, especially when using NDI.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report a comprehensive description of dental implant system selection practices among dentists practicing implantology worldwide. MATERIALS AND METHODS An online questionnaire was designed and sent to members of 15 dental implant organizations. The survey questions addressed: dental implant system selection criteria, implant design variables, dentists' perspective to implant quality stamps, and dentists' satisfaction with their implant system(s). Responses were compiled and analyzed to determine correlation of responses using the chi-squared test (level of significance α ≤ 0.05). RESULTS Out of 4264 invitations sent, a total of 2001 (response rate = 46.9%) dentists participated in the survey. Approximately half of survey respondents (48.7%) were general dentists. More than two-thirds of the survey respondents (72.5%) were performing both the surgical and prosthetic implant phases. Implant-abutment connections were the most important dental implant system selection criterion (84.7%), followed by scientific evidence available on the implant system (82.8%), and simplicity of prosthetic steps (81.4%). Patient preferences (19.8%) were rated as the least important aspect. Sandblasted large gritted acid etched implant surfaces (SLA) were the most commonly used implant surfaces (75.8%); fluoride coated surfaces were the least commonly used (15.4%). CONCLUSION According to the results of this survey, most survey respondents practiced both surgical and prosthetic phases of dental implantology. The majority of survey respondents agreed on the importance of implant-abutment connections, scientific evidence available on implant systems, and simplicity of prosthetic steps when selecting implant systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the bone response to grade IV commercially pure titanium (G4) relative to Ti-6Al-4V (G5). MATERIALS AND METHODS Implant surface topography was characterized by optical interferometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thirty-six implants (Signo Vinces, n = 18 per group) were installed in the radius of 18 dogs. The animals were killed at 1, 3, and 6 weeks, resulting in 6 implants per group and time in vivo for bone morphology, bone-to-implant contact (BIC), and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) evaluation. RESULTS SEM depicted a more uniform topography of G4 than G5. Surfaces were statistically homogeneous for Sa, Sq, and Sdr. At 1 week, new bone formation was observed within the healing connective tissue in contact with the implant surface. At 3 weeks, new bone in direct contact with the implant surface was observed at all bone regions. At 6 weeks, the healing chambers filled with woven bone depicted an onset of replacement by lamellar bone. No significant effect of substrate was detected. Time presented an effect on BIC and BAFO (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Both titanium substrates were biocompatible and osseoconductive at the bone tissue level.

Abstract
Oral implantology has become a major discipline within the field of dentistry. Small or mini dental implants have demonstrated success in the retention of removable and fixed prostheses. Small-diameter implants (SDI) and mini-diameter implants (MDI) describe a group of implants that demonstrate a diameter less than 3 mm. This retrospective study reports on 335 SDI placed during a 7-year period. All implants were placed in healed sites (>6 months) and loaded immediately or after waiting 3 months. A total of 321 implants were restored and functional within the study's time interval. A total of 14 implants failed, resulting in a 96.1% implant success rate. Treatment plan considerations should include prosthetic design, specific arch, and immediate load. Overall, SDI can be utilized as an alternative implant treatment option for patients with atrophic bone, compromised medical histories and financial constraints.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of implant diameter, length and shape on a surrogate parameter of implant survival; i.e. the implant return rate in a big data analysis. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted and the factors influencing the success rates of 69,377 sold implants over a seven-year period were evaluated. The osseointegration program of a reseller provides reliable data of a single country. Implant loss rates were investigated using logistic regression models and regressed by implant type, diameter, and length. Results The return rate of 69,377 sold implants was 2.78% and comparable to implant loss rates in previous published prospective studies as its surrogate parameter. A total of 80% of implant returns had occurred within 157 days, and an additional 15% within 750.25 days. Diameters of 3.8 to 5.0mm showed the lowest return rates with its bottom in the 4.3mm implant whilst 6.0mm implants had significantly higher return rates. In comparison to the most sold implant length (13mm) shorter implants showed significantly higher early return rates. Conclusions The study provides evidence that in cases of standard indications and sufficient bone, the use of screw typed dental implants with 3.8 or 4.3 diameter and 11 or 13 mm length shows the lowest implant return rates. Other implants may be selected only in specific indications.

Abstract
Small diameter (mini) dental implants have become more popular in recent years as alternatives to classical implant treatment in clinical cases with critical bony situations. However, an in-depth scientific analysis of the mechanical and biomechanical effects of small diameter implants has not yet been published. The aim of the present study was to investigate experimentally different commercial mini implants by measuring their displacements under immediate loading. Twelve commercially available mini implants were measured. Implants were inserted into porcine mandibular segments and loaded by means of a predefined displacement of 0.5 mm of the loading system. The implants were loaded at an angle of 30° to the implant long axis using the self-developed biomechanical hexapod measurement system. Implant displacements were registered. The experimental results were compared to the numerical ones from a previous study. Measured implant displacements were within the range of 39-194 μm. A large variation in the displacements was obtained among the different implant systems due to the different designs and thread profiles. Comparing experimental and numerical results, the displacements that were obtained numerically were within the range of 79-347 μm. The different commercial mini implants showed acceptable primary stability and could be loaded immediately after their insertion.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the reliability of narrow diameter dental implants (NDIs) with similar macrogeometry and 3 implant-abutment connection designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-four NDIs (3.5 × 10 mm) were selected and divided into 4 groups (n = 21/group) according to implant-abutment connection design, as follows: EH - external hexagon, IH - internal hexagon, IC - internal conical, and IC-M - internal conical connected to a monolithic titanium abutment. Identical abutments were torqued to the implants, and standardized maxillary incisor crowns were cemented and subjected to step-stress accelerated life testing (SSALT) in water. Use of level probability Weibull curves, and reliability for a mission of 50,000 cycles at 75 N and 200 N were calculated. RESULTS The beta (β) values were: 1.48 for IC, 1.40 for IC-M, 8.54 for EH, and 1.98 for IH, indicating that damage accumulation was an acceleration factor for failure of all groups. At 75 N the probability of survival was not significantly different between groups. A decrease in reliability was observed for all groups at 200 N with no significant differences between IC (81.71%) and IC-M (94.28%), or between EH and IH (0%) which presented the lowest values. EH failures were primarily restricted to the screw, while IH involved screw and implant fracture. IC and IC-M were restricted to prosthetic failures (fracture and bending). CONCLUSIONS Narrow implants with external or internal hexagon connections presented the lowest reliability at high loads compared to internal conical connections. Failure modes differed among connections.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Conventional dental implants are not applicable in the mandibular interforaminal region if bone volume is limited. Mini-dental implants offer an alternative means of supporting mandibular overdentures in a narrow residual ridge, without additional surgery. PURPOSE The purpose of this nonrandomized clinical trial was to compare the ability of mini-dental implants with that of conventional dental implants in supporting mandibular overdentures during a 2-year clinical follow-up. Bone quality, bone resorption, implant stability, and oral health were assessed radiographically. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 32 participants with edentulism were included. Twenty-two participants (99 implants) received 4 to 5 mini-dental implants (diameter: 1.8-2.4 mm; length: 13-15 mm, study group), and 10 participants (35 implants) received 2 to 4 conventional dental implants (diameter: 3.3-3.7 mm; length: 11-13 mm, control group). The selection of the participants in the study or control group was based on the available bone volume in the mandible. The selection was not randomized. The density of cortical bone thickness was measured in Hounsfield units (HU) from computed tomography data, and patients were followed for 2 years. The participants were examined 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Primary stability immediately after the insertion of dental implants (Periotest), secondary stability 6 months after implantation, modified plaque, bleeding on probing indices, and probing depth were measured and analyzed statistically (α=.05). RESULTS The mean HU value 6 months after implantation in the participants who received mini-dental implants was significantly (P=.035) higher (1250 HU) than that in the participants who received conventional dental implants (1100 HU). The probing depths around the conventional dental implants (1.6 and 1.8 mm, respectively) were significantly higher than those around the mini-dental implants (1.3 and 1.2 mm, respectively) 12 and 24 months after surgery, respectively (P<.001). The mean primary and secondary stability values for conventional dental implants were -4.0 and -4.9, respectively. The primary and secondary stability values for the mini-dental implants were -0.3 and -1.4, respectively. The Periotest values of the primary (measured immediately after implant insertion) and secondary implant stabilities (measured 6 months after implant insertion) were significantly higher for the conventional dental implants than for the mini-dental implants (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Based on this 2-year clinical trial, patients receiving mini-dental implants had clinical outcomes similar to those of patients receiving conventional dental implants to support overdenture prostheses.
