Versatile Patterning of Liquid Metal via Multiphase 3D Printing

This paper presents a scalable and straightforward technique for the immediate patterning of liquid metal/polymer composites via multiphase 3D printing. Capitalizing on the polymer's capacity to confine liquid metal (LM) into diverse patterns. The interplay between distinctive fluidic properties of liquid metal and its self-passivating oxide layer within an oxidative environment ensures a resilient interface with the polymer matrix. This study introduces an inventive approach for achieving versatile patterns in eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn), a gallium alloy. The efficacy of pattern formation hinges on nozzle's design and internal geometry, which govern multiphase interaction. The interplay between EGaIn and polymer within the nozzle channels, regulated by variables such as traverse speed and material flow pressure, leads to periodic patterns. These patterns, when encapsulated within a dielectric polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), exhibit an augmented inherent capacitance in capacitor assemblies. This discovery not only unveils the potential for cost-effective and highly sensitive capacitive pressure sensors but also underscores prospective applications of these novel patterns in precise motion detection, including heart rate monitoring, and comprehensive analysis of gait profiles. The amalgamation of advanced materials and intricate patterning techniques presents a transformative prospect in the domains of wearable sensing and comprehensive human motion analysis.

Biomonitoring of Heavy Metal Toxicity in Freshwater Canals in Egypt Using Creeping Water Bugs (Ilyocoris cimicoides): Oxidative Stress, Histopathological, and Ultrastructural Investigations

The abundance of metal pollutants in freshwater habitats poses serious threats to the survival and biodiversity of aquatic organisms and human beings. This study intends for the first time to assess the pernicious influences of heavy metals in Al Marioteya canal freshwater in Egypt, compared to Al Mansoureya canal as a reference site utilizing the creeping water bug (Ilyocoris cimicoides) as an ecotoxicological model. The elemental analysis of the water showed a significantly higher incidence of heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb), in addition to the calcium (Ca) element than the World Health Organization's (WHO) permitted levels. The Ca element was measured in the water samples to determine whether exposure to heavy metals-induced oxidative stress engendered Ca deregulation in the midgut tissues of the creeping water bug. Remarkably, increased levels of these heavy metals were linked to an increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) at the polluted site. Notably, the accumulation of these heavy metals in the midgut tissues resulted in a substantial reduction in antioxidant parameters, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and ascorbate peroxidase (APOX), along with a marked rise in malondialdehyde (MDA), cytochrome P450, and protein carbonyl levels. These results clearly indicate a noticeable disturbance in the antioxidant defense system due to uncontrollable reactive oxygen species (ROS). Notably, the results demonstrated that oxidative stress caused disturbances in Ca levels in the midgut tissue of I. cimicoides from polluted sites. Furthermore, the comet and flow cytometry analyses showed considerable proliferations of comet cells and apoptotic cells in midgut tissues, respectively, exhibiting prominent correlations, with pathophysiological deregulation. Interestingly, histopathological and ultrastructural examinations exposed noticeable anomalies in the midgut, Malpighian tubules, and ovarioles of I. cimicoides, emphasizing our findings. Overall, our findings emphasize the potential use of I. cimicoides as a bioindicator of heavy metal pollution in freshwater to improve sustainable water management in Egypt.

Mercury (Hg2+) Sensing Using Coumarin-Derived Fluorescent Chemo-Sensors: An Intuitive Development from 2015 to 2023

Mercury is known as a highly toxic metal that is poisonous even if present in a trace amount. Generally, it enters in the food chain (especially fish) and water resources via different pathways and leads to harmful effects. Owing to the detrimental nature of the metal, traditionally several methods were employed by researchers for regular monitoring of the mercury metal ions. However, these methods are associated with many limitations like high cost of technical expertise, and intricacy of the detection procedure. So, using these methods to detect mercury ions in real time is challenging. Therefore, in recent years fluorescent-based analytical tools emerged rapidly. Among the various fluorescent organic scaffolds, coumarin has been scorching, owing to quick response, light stability, high sensitivity, good selectivity, excellent fluorescence intensity, and fluorescence quantum yield. This review provides a deep dive into the coumarin-derived chemo-sensors development throughout 2015-2023. We anticipate that the review will assist to broad scientific community as a reference document to design more interesting sensors.

Porphyrin-Grafted Poly(ethylene terephthalate) as a Reusable and Highly Selective Colorimetric Probe for Mercuric Ion Contaminants in Aqueous Samples

Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg2+) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg2+ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg2+ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water.

Promising the potential of β-caryophyllene on mercury chloride-induced alteration in cerebellum and spinal cord of young Wistar albino rats

Mercury chloride (ME) is a chemical pollutant commonly found in the environment, which can contribute to undesirable health consequence worldwide. The current study investigated the detrimental impact of ME on the cerebellum and spinal cord tissues in 6-8-week-old female rats. We also evaluated the neuroprotective efficacy of β-caryophyllene (BC) against spinal and cerebellar changes caused by ME. Thirty-five young Wistar albino rats were randomly chosen and assigned into five groups: control (CO), olive oil (OI), ME, BC, ME + BC. All samples were analysed by means of unbiased stereological, biochemical, immunohistochemical, and histopathological methods. Our biochemical findings showed that SOD level was significantly increased in the ME group compared to the CO group (p < 0.05). We additionally detected a statistically significant decrease in the number of cerebellar Purkinje cells and granular cells, as well as spinal motor neuron in the ME group compared to the CO group (p < 0.05). In the ME + BC group, the number of Purkinje cells, granular cells, and spinal motor neurons was significantly higher compared to the ME group (p < 0.05). Decreased SOD activity in the ME + BC group was also detected than the ME group (p < 0.05). Immunohistochemical (the tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)) and histopathological examinations also exhibited crucial information in each of the group. Taken together, ME exposure was associated with neurotoxicity in the cerebellum and spinal cord tissues. BC treatment also mitigated ME-induced neurological alteration, which may imply its potential therapeutic benefits.

A carboethoxy quinoline-Derived Schiff base chemosensor: Crystal structure, selective Hg2+ ion detection and its computational study

Environmental monitoring of mercury (Hg2+) ions has become increasingly important as a result of their detrimental effects on biological organisms at all levels. To recognize toxic metal ions, utmost effort has been devoted to developing new materials that are highly selective, ultra-sensitive, and provide rapid response. In this context, a new chemosensor, 2-imino [N - (N-amido phenyl)]-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline (L), has been synthesized by combining 2-formyl-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline and benzhydrazide and it has been extensively characterized by NMR, FTIR, ESI-Mass and SCXRD analysis. Probe L has excellent specificity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ ions in semi-aqueous solutions, with a detection limit of 0.185 μM, regardless of the presence of other interfering cations. Chromogenic behavior was demonstrated by the L when it changed the color of the solution from colorless to light yellow, a change that can be observed visually. The probe L forms a 1:1 stochiometric complex with an estimated association constant (Ka) of 6.74 × 104 M-1. The 1H NMR change and density functional theory calculations were analyzed to improve our understanding of the sensing mechanism. Also, an inexpensive and simple paper-based test kit has been developed for the on-site detection of mercury ions in water samples.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in saffron (Crocus sativus L.) cultivated in domestic wastewater and lake water irrigated soils

Irrigation of crops with domestic wastewater (DW) is a common practice in developing countries like India. However, domestic wastewater irrigation poses a risk of migration of toxic heavy metals to edible parts of crops, which requires serious measures to prevent their uptake. In this study, the effect of DW irrigation in comparison with Sarbal Lake water (SLW) and borewell water (BW) on soil characteristics and cultivated saffron (Crocus sativus L.) was investigated. For this purpose, samples of water, soil, and saffron (corm, petal, and stigma) were collected from the suburban area of Pampore, Srinagar district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The results showed that DW irrigation had the maximum significant (p < 0.05) influence on the physico-chemical and nutrient characteristics of the soil, followed by SLW and BW irrigation, respectively. The growth and yield parameters of saffron were also significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the case of DW irrigation as compared to SLW and BW. The quality ranking of the cultivated saffron was found to be in accordance with the ISO standard (III: BW and II: DW and SLW). On the other hand, DW irrigation showed a significant increase in heavy metal contents (mg/kg) of saffron plant parts such as As (0.21-0.40), Cd (0.04-0.09), Cr (0.16-0.41), Cu (7.31-14. 75), Fe (142.38-303.15), Pb (0.18-0.31), Mn (15.26-22.81), Hg (0.18-0.25), Ni (0.74-1.18), Se (0.13-0.22), and Zn (3.44-4.59), followed by SLW and BW. However, the levels of heavy metals did not exceed the FAO/WHO safe limits. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF), dietary intake modeling (DIM<0.006496), health risk assessment (HRI<0.028571), and target hazard quotient (THQ<1) analyses showed no potential health hazard associated with the consumption of saffron irrigated with DW and SLW. Therefore, the results of this study provide valuable insights into the optimization of irrigation sources for saffron cultivation.

Long-Term Environmental Methylmercury Exposure Is Associated with Peripheral Neuropathy and Cognitive Impairment among an Amazon Indigenous Population

Widespread contamination of the Amazon basin with mercury has been reported to occur since at least the mid-80s due to heavy gold mining activity. Although initial studies have indicated that this may lead to deleterious neurological consequences to the indigenous populations living in the region, further research is needed to better characterize the neurological burden of such long-term exposure. With this aim, a cross-sectional exploratory study has been conducted with the Yanomami indigenous population residing in a northern Amazon region. All participants underwent a structured interview; detailed neurological examination, including assessment for cognitive, motor, coordination, and sensory functions; and laboratorial testing for serum hemoglobin, blood glucose, and methylmercury levels in hair samples. This study enrolled 154 individuals of 30.9 ± 16.8 years of age, of which 56.1% were female. Mean methylmercury levels in hair were 3.9 ± 1.7 µg/g. Methylmercury levels in hair > 6.0 µg/g were found in 10.3%. Among participants with hair methylmercury levels ≥ 6.0 μg/g, the prevalences of peripheral neuropathy and reduced cognitive performance were, respectively, 78.8% (95%CI 15-177%, p = 0.010) and 95.9% (95%CI 16-230.8%, p = 0.012) higher than those of individuals with lower levels. These results suggest that chronic mercury exposure may lead to significant and potentially irreversible neurotoxicity to Yanomami population living in the northern Amazon basin.

Association Between Multiple Heavy Metal Exposures and Cholesterol Levels in Residents Living Near a Smelter Plant in Korea

BACKGROUND

Considering the interactions between heavy metals, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of exposure to various types of co-interacting heavy metals on health is required. This study assessed the association between dyslipidemia markers and blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, and nickel levels in residents of an abandoned refinery plant.

METHODS

A total of 972 individuals (exposed group: 567, control group: 405) living near the Janghang refinery plant in the Republic of Korea were included. Blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, nickel, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were measured. The combined effect of the six heavy metals on dyslipidemia markers was evaluated using a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model and compared with the results of a linear regression analysis. The BKMR model results were compared using a stratified analysis of the exposed and control groups.

RESULTS

In the BKMR model, the combined effect of the six heavy metals was significantly associated with total cholesterol (TC) levels both below the 45th percentile and above the 55th percentile in the total population. The combined effect range between the 25th and 75th percentiles of the six metals on TC levels was larger in the exposed group than that in the total population. In the control group, the combined effects of the changes in concentration of the six heavy metals on the TC concentration were not statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that the cholesterol levels of residents around the Janghang refinery plant may be elevated owing to exposure to multiple heavy metals.

Pb(NO3 )2 induces cell apoptosis through triggering of reactive oxygen species accumulation and disruption of mitochondrial function via SIRT3/SOD2 pathways

Lead (Pb) is nonbiodegradable and toxic to the lungs. To investigate the potential mechanisms of Pb-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and cell death in the lungs, human non-small lung carcinoma H460 cells were stimulated with Pb(NO3 )2 in this study. The results showed that Pb(NO3 )2 stimulation increased cell death by inducing cell apoptosis which showed a reduced Bcl-2 expression and an enhanced caspase 3 activation. Pb(NO3 )2 also caused the production of H2 O2 in H460 cells that triggering the buildup of ROS and mitochondrial membrane potential loss. We found that Pb(NO3 )2 modulates oxidoreductive activity through reduced the glutathione-disulfide reductase and glutathione levels in Pb(NO3 )2 -exposed H460 cells. Furthermore, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) upstream molecule sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) was increased with Pb(NO3 )2 dose. Collectively, these results demonstrate that Pb(NO3 )2 promotes lung cell death through SIRT3/SOD-mediated ROS accumulation and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Analysis of Mercury in Aquifers in Gold Mining Areas in the Ecuadorian Amazon and Its Associated Risk for Human Health

Gold mining activity is a source of supply in many areas of the world, and especially in developing countries, it is practiced illegally and by applying unsafe techniques. Particularly in Ecuador, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is widespread, and it is based on the use of toxic substances, such as mercury (Hg), in gold recovery. Hg is a heavy metal that is water-insoluble, which, once mobilized, poses a threat to both the environment and human health. This study analyzes Hg concentrations in the six provinces of Napo, Sucumbíos, Orellana, Pastaza, Morona Santiago, and Zamora Chinchipe of the Ecuadorian Amazon region to conduct a human health risk assessment. Significant differences in Hg levels were found between provinces, but concentrations were below MPL imposed by Ecuadorian regulations everywhere. Nevertheless, a worrisome picture emerges, especially with regard to the most vulnerable receptors represented by the child population. There are multiple factors of incidence that may affect the possible future development of the phenomenon, and with reference to the social, economic, and environmental context of the region, it can be concluded that it may be appropriate to plan further investigation to arrive at a more comprehensive assessment. The results of this study can be used by decision makers to plan further investigation and to implement monitoring networks, risk mitigation strategies, and groundwater protection measures.

Mercury remediation from wastewater through its spontaneous adsorption on non-functionalized inverse spinel magnetic ferrite nanoparticles

In this study, inverse spinel cubic ferrites MFe2O4 (M = Fe2+, and Co2+) have been fabricated for the high-capacity adsorptive removal of Hg(II) ions. The PXRD analysis confirmed ferrites with the presence of residual NaCl. The surface area of Fe3O4 (Fe-F) and CoFe2O4 (Co-F) material was 69.1 and 45.2 m2 g-1, respectively. The Co-F and Fe-F showed the maximum Hg(II) adsorption capacity of 459 and 436 mg g-1 at pH 6. The kinetic and isotherms models suggested a spontaneous adsorption process involving chemical forces over the ferrite adsorbents. The Hg(II) adsorption process, probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed the interaction of Hg(II) ions with the surface hydroxyl groups via a complexation mechanism instead of proton exchange at pH 6 with the involvement of chloride ions. Thus, this study demonstrates a viable and cost-effective solution for the efficient remediation of Hg ions from wastewater using non-functionalized ferrite adsorbents. This study also systematically investigates the kinetics and isotherm mechanism of Hg(II) adsorption onto ferrites and reports one of the highest Hg(II) adsorption capacities among other ferrite-based adsorbents.

Human Health Risk Assessment from Mercury-Contaminated Soil and Water in Abu Hamad Mining Market, Sudan

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) poses a significant global threat due to mercury emissions and resulting health hazards. This study focuses on assessing these risks in the Abu Hamad ASGM community in Sudan. Utilizing the Mercury Analyzer 3000 (NIC), analyses of twelve soil samples (including one tailings sample) and seven water samples revealed the highest concentrations near amalgam burning locations: 34.8 mg/kg in soil (S06) and 3.26 µg/L in water (W03). Concentrations decrease with distance, with soil near burning exceeding tailings (S05 = 19.0 mg/kg). Hazard quotients indicate mercury vapor inhalation as the primary exposure route from soil, with the Hazard Index reaching 5.34 for adults and 33.4 for children close to amalgam burning sites. Water samples generally pose little risk except for W03, where children face potential danger via ingestion (HI = 1.74). These findings emphasize the urgent need for adopting retorts and eco-friendly practices to reduce mercury emissions and protect ASGM communities.

Prevention of Parkinson's Disease: From Risk Factors to Early Interventions

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by progressively worsening motor dysfunction. Currently, available therapies merely alleviate symptoms, and there are no cures. Consequently, some researchers have now shifted their attention to identifying the modifiable risk factors of PD, with the intention of possibly implementing early interventions to prevent the development of PD. Four primary risk factors for PD are discussed including environmental factors (pesticides and heavy metals), lifestyle (physical activity and dietary intake), drug abuse, and individual comorbidities. Additionally, clinical biomarkers, neuroimaging, biochemical biomarkers, and genetic biomarkers could also help to detect prodromal PD. This review compiled available evidence that illustrates the relationship between modifiable risk factors, biomarkers, and PD. In summary, we raise the distinct possibility of preventing PD via early interventions of the modifiable risk factors and early diagnosis.

The Impact of Environmental Toxins on Cardiovascular Diseases

Environmental toxins pose significant risks to human health and are considered major contributors to chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Numerous studies have highlighted the detrimental impact of environmental toxicity on cardiovascular health. The primary sources of environmental toxins include pollutants containing particulate matter and organic substances, such as sulfate, nitrates, ammonium, elemental carbon, crystal elements, arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and Bisphenol A (BPA). Epidemiological research has closely monitored the link between environmental toxins and CVDs. Notably, aerosols and particulate matter, including PM10 and PM2.5, prevalent in ambient air pollution, have been implicated in various CVDs like ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, and dysrhythmia. Additionally, heavy metals such as lead and pesticides from environmental toxins are known to contribute to CVDs, even at low levels of exposure over extended periods. Mercury exposure, even at low concentrations, can adversely affect multiple organs, including the heart, kidneys, nervous system, and immune system. With Pb2+ ions exhibiting Ca2+-like properties, lead disrupts various pathways and can lead to cardiac and vascular lesions and functional impairments when blood lead concentrations exceed 100 µg% in adults and 60 µg% in children. Furthermore, cadmium exposure is higher in smokers, primarily due to tobacco use, and is associated with peripheral artery disease. Arsenic toxicity is well-documented, particularly its cardiotoxic effects, which can result in fatal and irreversible myocardial damage. Bisphenol A (BPA) has also been found in urine samples, underscoring its presence as an environmental toxin impacting human health.

Spodium Bonds Involving Methylmercury and Ethylmercury in Proteins: Insights from X-ray Analysis and Computations

In this study, the stability, directionality, and physical nature of Spodium bonds (SpBs, an attractive noncovalent force involving elements from group 12 and Lewis bases) between methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) and amino acids (AAs) have been analyzed from both a structural (X-ray analysis) and theoretical (RI-MP2/def2-TZVP level of theory) point of view. More in detail, an inspection of the Protein Data Bank (PDB) reported evidence of noncovalent contacts between MeHg and EtHg molecules and electron-rich atoms (e.g., O atoms belonging to the protein backbone and S atoms from MET residues or the π-systems of aromatic AAs such as TYR or TRP). These results were rationalized through a computational study using MeHg coordinated to a thiolate group as a theoretical model and several neutral and charged electron-rich molecules (e.g., benzene, formamide, or chloride). The physical nature of the interaction was analyzed from electrostatics and orbital perspectives by performing molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and natural bonding orbital (NBO) analyses. Lastly, the noncovalent interactions plot (NCIplot) technique was used to provide a qualitative view of the strength of the Hg SpBs and compare them to other ancillary interactions present in these systems as well as to shed light on the extension of the interaction in real space. We believe that the results derived from our study will be useful to those scientists devoted to protein engineering and bioinorganic chemistry as well as to expanding the current knowledge of SpBs among the chemical biology community.

Metallothionein expression in the central nervous system in response to chronic heavy metal exposure: possible neuroprotective mechanism

It has been reported that volcanoes release several tonnes of mercury per year among other heavy metals through eruptions, fumaroles, or diffuse soil degassing. Since a high percentage of the world's population lives in the vicinity of an active volcano, the aim of this study is to evaluate the accumulation of these metals in the central nervous system and the presence of cellular mechanisms of heavy metal detoxification such as metallothioneins. To carry out this study, wild mice (Mus musculus) chronically exposed to an active volcanic environment were captured in Furnas village (Azores, Portugal) and compared with those trapped in a reference area (Rabo de Peixe, Azores, Portugal). On the one hand, the heavy metal load has been evaluated by analyzing brain and cerebellum using ICP-MS and a mercury analyzer and on the other hand, the presence of metallothionein 2A has been studied by immunofluorescence assays. Our results show a higher load of metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead in the central nervous system of exposed mice compared to non-exposed individuals and, in addition, a higher immunoreactivity for metallothionein 2A in different areas of the cerebrum and cerebellum indicating a possible neuroprotection process.

Understanding the sources of mercury release from coal: A combined experimental and molecular simulation study

Understanding the occurrence modes of mercury in coal is important as its release poses long-term adverse effects on the environment and human health during coal production and utilization. However, the matter still remains a subject of controversy due to differing results from direct and indirect analyses, which suggest various possible modes of occurrence for mercury in coal. Additionally, the experimental measurement of Hg concentration presents challenges, further contributing to the complexity of the issue. A comprehensive investigation of experiments and molecular simulations is conducted herein. Electron probe microanalysis and elemental mapping analysis show that elemental Hg is concentrated in framboidal pyrites while absent in organic matter. To understand the occurrence modes of mercury in inorganic and organic materials at the atomic level, molecular simulations are performed for Hg2+ adsorption and retention in MMT, pyrite, and kerogen slit nanopores. It is found that the inorganic MMT and pyrite surfaces have a greater adsorption capacity than the organic kerogen surface (pyrite > MMT > kerogen). The outer-sphere adsorption is mainly observed with at least one monolayer of water molecules exiting between the ion and mineral surfaces. MMT has the highest retention for Hg2+ transport as the self-diffusion coefficient is the smallest among the three slit pores (MMT < pyrite < kerogen). The high adsorption and retention originate from the strong Hg2+-mineral interaction. These results suggest that mercury in coal is most likely associated with inorganic minerals instead of organic matter.

Clean water production from plastic and heavy metal contaminated waters using redox-sensitive iron nanoparticle-loaded biochar

The unceasing release of tiny plastics (microplastics and nanoplastics) and their additives, like metal ions, into the aquatic systems from industries and other sources is a globally escalating problem. Their combined toxic effects and human health hazard are already proven; hence, their remediation is requisite. This study utilised the nano-zerovalent iron-loaded sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar (nZVI-SBC) for simultaneous removal of Nanoplastics (NPs) of different functionality and size along with metal ions (Ni2+, Cd2+, AsO43-, and CrO42-). Batch and column experiments were conducted, and the results showed an efficient removal of contaminants with maximum sorption of carboxylate-modified NPs of size 500 nm (qmax = 90.3 mg/g) among all three NPs types. Significant removal was observed in Cd2+ in case of cations and CrO42- in case of anions with qmax = 44.0 and 87.8 mg/g, respectively. Kinetics and the isotherm modelling better fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips isotherm model, respectively for both NPs and metal ions. The designed material worked well in pH range of 4-8, ionic strength 1-20 mM and in complex aqueous matrices, with >90% removal. FTIR, zeta potential and the imaging analysis of the reaction precipitates confirmed the electrostatic attraction, pore retention and complexation as the potential mechanisms for removing NPs, whereas, XPS studies confirmed the reduction co-precipitation and surface complexation as the possible mechanism for removing metal ions. High values of attachment efficiency factor calculated from colloidal filtration theory (CFT) validated the experimental results and justified the high sorption of carboxylate modified 500 nm NPs particles. The synthesized material successfully removed both NPs of varying size and functionality and metal ions simultaneously with significant efficacy in complex environmental samples proving the broad applicability of material in realistic environmental conditions and different types of water treatment processes.

The transfer of 137Cs and heavy metals to tissues within the organs of snails

This paper describes the dynamics of 137Cs accumulation and its concentration ratio as well as that of some stable elements in the body, shell, gastrointestinal tract and albumin gland of a particular species of snail (terrestrial gastropod), namely the Giant African snail (Lissachatina fulica), after the long-term ingestion of contaminated forage and/or soil. The activity concentration of 137Cs in the their bodies increased over the first 40 days of the experiment, after which the increase in the activity of this radionuclide significantly reduced. The distribution of 137Cs in the body of a snail decreases as follows: gastrointestinal tract ˃ body = albumin gland ˃ shell. It was found that the contribution of soil towards the contamination of their bodies by 137Cs is far less than that of forage. Although the biological availability of Pb and U in forage is one order of magnitude higher than in soil, the main contribution to the contamination of snails originates from soil.

Toxic Optic Neuropathy Due to Mercury in Skin Lightening Products

Mercury has been described as been in daily household items such as soaps, skin-lightening creams (SLC), and topical disinfectants. Mercury exposure can reportedly cause damage to the optic nerve and retina. A 30-year-old Somali woman presented with decreased vision and was found to have bilateral optic atrophy. Neuroimaging and laboratory work-up for nutritional deficiencies, heavy metals, and syphilis were performed. Evaluation revealed normal neuroimaging and laboratory work-up except for elevated serum and urine mercury levels. Mercury levels at the initial blood test was 11.1 ug/L (normal limits < 10.0 ug/L) and was 15.7 ug/L on repeat testing. A 24-h urine test showed elevated mercury at 16 ug/24 h (normal limits < 2 ug/24 h). Evaluation of an unlabelled SLC that she was using showed the presence of mercury. It is worth testing for heavy metals in the work-up of bilateral optic atrophy. Clinicians should consider cosmetic products as a potential source of mercury exposure and recommend discontinuation if mercury is present.

Urbanization-driven soil degradation; ecological risks and human health implications

Urban soils contaminated with heavy metals and pesticide residues are of great concern because of their adverse impact on human health. A total of 66 agricultural topsoil samples (15 cm) were collected to represent the study area and determine how anthropogenic activities adversely affect soil quality and human health. Sampling was conducted in the summer, when it was dry and hot, and in the winter, after atmospheric deposition. Seventeen potentially hazardous metals/metalloids (Ag, As, Al, B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Mo, Pb, Se, Zn, and V) were measured in the soils. The mean concentrations of metals ranged between 0.05 and 8080 mg/kg, and their distribution was site-specific, with high pollution at the sampling sites owing to proximity to human activities. In agricultural areas, the greatest arsenic concentration was recorded at 48 mg/kg. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) and health hazard index (HI) were calculated, as well as metal contamination indices including contamination factor (Cf), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and pollution load index (PLI). The mean PLI was calculated to be 4.89, indicating that the area is highly polluted. The potential ecological risk index showed remarkably high risks for As, Cd, and Hg, and moderate risks for Ni and Pb. The arsenic hazard index (HI) was greater than one (2.41) in children, indicating a risk of exposure through ingestion. Pesticide residue analyses were performed in areas where the metal intensity was high. Banned or restricted organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) residues, including, dieldrin, endrin ketone, endosulfan I, II, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane (γ-HCH), PP-DDD, and methoxychlor, were detected between 0.002 and 1.45 mg/kg in the soil samples.

Intelligent detection strategy and bioimaging application of dual-responsive Hg2+ and ONOO- using near-infrared probes

Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal pollutant. Mercury and its derivatives pose serious threats to the environment and the health of organisms. Numerous reports have indicated that Hg²⁺ exposure induces a burst of oxidative stress in organisms, causing severe damage to the health of the organism. A large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are produced under conditions of oxidative stress, and superoxide anions (O₂^-) and NO radicals react rapidly with each other to produce peroxynitrite (ONOO^-), an important downstream product. Therefore, developing an efficient and highly responsive screening method to monitor the fluctuations of Hg²⁺ and ONOO^- levels is particularly important. In this work, we designed and synthesized a highly sensitive and highly specific near-infrared probe W-2a, which can effectively detect and distinguish Hg²⁺ and ONOO^- through fluorescence imaging. In addition, we developed a WeChat mini-program called "Colorimetric acquisition" and built an intelligent detection platform to assess the environmental hazards of Hg²⁺ and ONOO^-. The probe can detect Hg²⁺ and ONOO^- in the body through dual signaling, as evidenced by cell imaging, and has successfully monitored fluctuations in the ONOO^- levels in inflamed mice. In conclusion, the W-2a probe provides a highly efficient and reliable method for assessing oxidative stress-induced changes in the ONOO^- levels in the body.

Porphyrin and phthalocyanine heavy metal removal: overview of theoretical investigation for heterojunction organic solar cell applications

CONTEXT

Heavy metals are highly noxious, and their presence can cause diverse effects on living organisms and the environment. Crown ether porphyrins and phthalocyanines are known to effectively extract these pollutants and are also used in photovoltaic devices. This study aims to evaluate various factors that govern intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and photo-injection processes, including maximum absorption wavelength (λ_max), density of states (DOS), charge transfer dipole (μ_CT), light harvesting efficiency (LHE), open-circuit voltage (V_oc), and free energy change of electron injection (ΔG_inj) in order to investigate the performance of different compounds designed from metalloporphyrins for bulk-heterojunction organic solar cell (BHJ-OSC) applications. The porphyrin complex showed the best optoelectronic properties, with remarkable LHE values and CT amounts compared to phthalocyanine derivatives. The central metal played a significant role in optimizing the optical properties of the materials for use in solar cells. HgPr4O and CdPr4O were found to have optimal V_oc values, resulting in effective injection, high electron, and hole mobilities, making them ideal materials for highly efficient BHJ-OSC devices.

METHODS

Density functional theory (DFT) approach was employed with the B3LYP functional and the def2TZVP basis set as implemented in the Gaussian 16 revision C.01 program to investigate the designed complexes and to compute geometrical parameters, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), and natural bond orbital (NBO). Furthermore, the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method was used to analyze the optical properties and photovoltaic characteristics of selected metalloporphyrins by examining the UV-Vis spectra. In summary, the study presents a thorough description of the structural and electronic properties of the investigated complexes and provides insights into their potential use in photovoltaic applications.

Toxicity profiling of Burgmansia aurea Lagerh. Leaves using acute and sub-acute toxicity studies in rats

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Toxicity studies in appropriate animal models are an integral and very important component of pre-clinical studies in drug development. Brugmansia aurea lagerh. is used for both medicinal and non-medical purposes, including treating skin infections, different types of physical discomfort, inflammation, cough, hallucinations, and evil protection.

AIM OF THE STUDY

This study was designed to detect any hazardous effects of B. aurea on animals and find out its LD₅₀.

MATERIALS & METHODS

An acute toxicity study was performed to find out the LD₅₀ value and sub-acute toxicity study was performed to find out the toxicity on repeated dose administration till 28 days. Both studies were performed according to the organization of economic cooperation and development (OECD) 425 and 407 respectively. For the acute oral toxicity study, animals were divided into two groups, group I normal control (NC) and group II received a 2000mg/kg dose of B.aurea leaves extract. In the sub-acute toxicity study, male and female animals were divided into eight groups, I-IV for males and V-VIII for females received control, 100, 200 & 400mg/kg B. aurea leaves extract respectively. Hematological and biochemical markers were estimated at the end of each study.

RESULTS

Results revealed that no mortality and morbidity were observed in acute oral as well as sub-acute toxicity studies. Oxidative stress markers were increased significantly in all organs of the treatment groups in both studies. Animals significantly decreased their food and water intake in an acute oral toxicity study. A slight difference in renal function tests was observed in the acute oral toxicity study when compared with the normal control group. No significant change in histopathology was observed in both studies on selected organs.

CONCLUSION

This study concluded that B. aurea can be safely used for pharmacological purposes.

A methionine biomolecule-modified chromenylium-cyanine fluorescent probe for the analysis of Hg2+ in the environment and living cells

The objective of the study is, for the first time, to construct a new near infrared (NIR) fluorophore, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, ratiometric, and turn-on probe (CSME) based on chromenylium cyanine platform decorated with methionine biomolecule to provide an efficient solution for critical shortcoming to be encountered for analysis of hazardous Hg²⁺ in environment and living cell. The CSME structure and its interaction with Hg²⁺ ion were evaluated by NMR, FTIR, MS, UV-Vis and fluorescence methods as well as Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The none fluorescence CSME having spirolactam ring only interacted with Hg²⁺ in aqueous solution including competing ions. This interaction caused the fluorescence CSME with opened spirolactam form which exhibited spectral and colorimetric changes in the NIR region. The probe based on UV-Vis and fluorescence techniques respond in 90 s, has wide linear ranges (for UV-Vis: 6.29 × 10^-8 - 1.86 × 10^-4 M; for fluorescence: 9.49 × 10^-9 - 1.13 × 10^-5 M), and has a lower Limit of Detection (LOD) value (for fluorescence: 4.93 × 10^-9 M, 0.99 ng/mL) than the value predicted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) organization. Hg²⁺ analysis was performed in drinking and tap water with low Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) values and high recovery. Smartphone and living cell applications were successfully performed for colorimetric sensing Hg²⁺ in real samples and 3T3 cells, respectively.

Spatial distribution, sources and health risk assessment of heavy metals in topsoil around oil and natural gas drilling sites, Andhra Pradesh, India

Soils are usually the interface between human activity and environmental components that must be conserved and protected. As a result of rising industrialization and urbanization, activities such as exploration and extraction operations lead to the release of heavy metals into the environment. This study presents distribution of six heavy metals (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in 139 top soil samples collected in and around oil and natural gas drilling sites at a sampling density of 1 site/12 km2. The results indicated the concentration ranged from 0.1 to 16 mg/kg for As, 3-707 mg/kg for Cr, 7-2324 mg/kg for Cu, 14-234 mg/kg for Ni, 9-1664 mg/kg for Pb, and 60-962 mg/kg for Zn. The contamination of soil was estimated on the basis of Index of geo accumulation (Igeo), enrichment factor (Ef), and contamination factor (Cf). Further, spatial distribution pattern maps indicated that the pollution levels for Cu, Cr, Zn, and Ni were higher around drilling sites of the study area relative to other regions. Using exposure factors for the local population and references from the USEPA's integrated database, potential ecological risk indices (PERI) and health risk assessments were made. The hazard index (HI) values of Pb (in adults) and Cr, Pb (in children) exceeded the recommended limit of HI = 1, indicating the non-carcinogenic risks. Total carcinogenic risk (TCR) calculations revealed Cr (in adults) and As, Cr (in children) levels in soils exceeded the threshold value of 1.0E - 04, indicating significant carcinogenic risk due to high metal concentrations in the study area. These results may assist in determining the soil's present state and its effect due to extraction strategies used during drilling process and initiate few remedial techniques, particularly for proper management strategies in farming activities to decrease point and non-point source of contamination.

A novel method for extraction and quantification of feather triiodothyronine (T3) and application to ecotoxicology of Purple Martin (Progne subis)

Seventy-three percent of aerial insectivore species of birds breeding in North America have declined in the past five years. This decline is even greater in migratory insectivorous species, which face stressors in both their breeding and non-breeding ranges. The Purple Martin (Progne subis) is an aerial insectivore swallow that overwinters in South America and migrates to North America to breed. Purple Martin populations have declined by an estimated 25% since 1966. The eastern subspecies (P. subis subis) has declined the most and overwinters in the Amazon Basin, a region rich in environmental mercury (Hg) contamination. Previous studies reported elevated levels of Hg in feathers of this subspecies, which correlated negatively with body mass and fat reserves. Given the propensity of Hg to disrupt the endocrine system, and the role of thyroid hormones in regulating fat metabolism, this study quantifies concentrations of Hg and the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T₃) in the feathers of P. subis subis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to extract and quantify T₃ in feathers; thus, we developed, tested, and optimized a method for extracting T₃ from feather tissue and validated an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to quantify T₃ in Purple Martin feathers. The developed method yielded acceptable results for both parallelism and accuracy. The observed T₃ concentrations were statistically modeled along with total Hg (THg) concentrations, but these variables were not significantly correlated. This suggests that the observed variation in THg concentration may be insufficient to cause a discernible change in T₃ concentration. Furthermore, the observed effect of breeding location on feather T₃ concentration might have obscured any effect of Hg.

Interaction of mercury species with proteins: towards possible mechanism of mercurial toxicology

The nature of the binding of mercurials (organic and inorganic) and their subsequent transformations in biological systems is a matter of great debate as several different hypotheses have been proposed and none of them has been conclusively proven to explain the characteristics of Hg binding with the proteins. Thus, the chemical nature of Hg-protein binding through the possible transportation mechanism in living tissues is critically reviewed herein. Emphasis is given to the process of transportation, and binding of Hg species with selenol-containing biomolecules that are appealing for toxicological studies as well as the advancement of environmental and biological research.

Systemic impact of heavy metals and their role in cancer development: a review

Heavy metals are well-recognised as environmental hazards due to their toxicity, environmental persistence, and bioaccumulation in living organisms. Human health is a crucial concern related to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems poisoned by harmful heavy metals. Most heavy metals pollute the air, water, and soil, which can be fatal to humans. Humans and other species can be exposed to heavy metals through the food chain if the metals oxidise or combine with other environmental elements (such as water, soil, or air). Their entry into the food chain assures interactions with biological macromolecules in living systems, including humans, resulting in undesirable outcomes. Human poisonings have typically been caused by mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic. The build-up of these metals in living organisms causes various harmful consequences on different organs and tissues. The gravitas of heavy metal toxicity regarding molecular impact and carcinogenesis needs in-depth understanding despite the plethora of available data. Hence, additionally, we attempt to elaborate on the multi-level impact of five heavy metals and emphasise their role in cancer development. The rationale of this essay is thus to understand the role of five heavy metals, viz., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg), in carcinogenesis. Heavy metals interfere with various biological functions, including proliferation, differentiation, repair of damage, and apoptosis. By comparing their modes of action, we see that these metals share common mechanisms for inducing toxicity, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antioxidant defence weakening, enzyme inactivation, and oxidative stress.

Long-Term Changes in the Pollution of Warta River Bottom Sediments with Heavy Metals, Poland-Case Study

Variability in the heavy metal concentrations in aquatic environments may be influenced by a number of factors that may occur naturally or due to anthropopressure. This article presents the risk of contaminating Warta River bottom sediments with heavy metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Samples collected from 35 sites located along the river course were analysed over the period of 2010-2021. The calculated pollution indices are characterised by significant spatial variability that was additionally subject to changes in subsequent years. The analysis may have also been influenced by individual measurement results that, in extreme cases, may strongly deviate from the concentration values determined in the same site during the remaining years. The highest median concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Pb were in samples collected from sites that are surrounded by areas of anthropogenic land use. Samples from adjacent sites to agricultural areas showed the highest median concentrations of Co, Mn, and Ni, and Zn for those adjacent to forest areas. The research results indicate that, when analysing the degree of the risk of contaminating river bottom sediments with heavy metals, it is necessary to take into account long-term variability in metal concentrations. Taking into consideration data from only one year may lead to inappropriate conclusions and hinder planning protective measures.

High Hg biomagnification in North Atlantic coast ecosystems and limits to the use of δ15N to estimate trophic magnification factors

Mercury contamination is a global environmental problem. This pollutant is highly toxic and persistent which makes it extremely susceptible to biomagnify, i.e. increase its concentrations as it moves up the food chain, reaching levels that threaten wildlife and, ultimately, ecosystems' function and structure. Mercury monitoring is thus crucial to determine its potential to damage the environment. In this study, we assessed the temporal trends of the concentrations of Hg in two coastal animal species closely connected by a predator-prey interaction, and evaluated its potential transfer between trophic levels using the δ¹⁵N signatures of the two species. For this, we performed a multi-year survey of the concentrations of total Hg and the values of δ¹⁵N in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (prey) and the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus (predator) sampled along ∼1500 km of the North Atlantic coast of Spain over a 30-year period (five surveys between 1990 and 2021). Concentrations of Hg decreased significantly between the first and the last survey in the two species studied. Except for the 1990 survey, the concentrations of Hg in mussels were amongst the lowest registered in the literature for the North East Atlantic Ocean (NEAO) and the Mediterranean Sea (MS) between 1985 and 2020. Nonetheless, we detected Hg biomagnification in almost all surveys. Worryingly, trophic magnification factors obtained here for total Hg were high and comparable to the found in the literature for methylmercury, the most toxic and readily biomagnified form of this element. The δ¹⁵N values were useful to detect Hg biomagnification under normal circumstances. However, we found that nitrogen pollution of coastal waters differentially affected the δ¹⁵N signatures of mussels and dogwhelks limiting the use of this parameter for this purpose. We conclude that Hg biomagnification could constitute an important environmental hazard even when found at very low concentrations in the lower trophic levels. Also, we warn that use of δ¹⁵N in biomagnification studies when there is some underlying nitrogen pollution problem might lead to misleading conclusions.

Health risk assessment of methyl mercury from fish consumption in a sample of adult Qatari residents

Fish constitutes an essential source of high-quality protein and is, at the same time, the source of exposure to many hazardous contaminants, namely mercury and methyl mercury (MeHg). This study aims at assessing the risk that MeHg poses to the health of adult Qatari residents through fish consumption. Data on fish consumption were collected using a self-administered online survey composed of three sections that collected information about the fish-eating patterns of the participants. The fish species that were reported to be consumed by ≥ 3% of the respondents were sampled and analyzed for their total mercury (T-Hg) content levels. MeHg concentrations were derived from T-Hg content levels using a scenario-based approach. Disaggregated fish consumption and contamination data were combined using the deterministic approach to estimate MeHg intakes. The average, 75th, and 95th percentiles of the MeHg intake estimates were determined and compared to the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) set by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) (1.3 μg·kg^-1·w^-1). All fish samples contained T-Hg at levels ˂ 0.3-0.5 µg/g with a mean value of 0.077 µg/g. The study population had an average fish consumption of 736.0 g/week. The average estimated weekly intakes of MeHg exceeded TWI for some fish consumers including females of childbearing age and those following a high-protein diet. Our study highlights the need to establish regulatory guidelines and dietary advice based on risk/benefit ratio.

Dynamic sequential extraction procedure using a four-channel circulating flow system for extracting Hg from soil samples

Mercury (Hg) is harmful to the human body. Its physical properties and toxicity differ greatly depending on its chemical form. The quantification of soluble Hg in soils or sediments is crucial for preventing further environmental contamination by Hg sources such as products, processes, and storage. In this study, the risk of leachable Hg that release from soil to the hydrosphere was evaluated by the sequential extraction procedure (SEP), a speciation method of a targeted element based on the solubility of its various compounds. The SEP, which consists of a four-channel circulating flow system (FCFS), was developed to reduce the time and amount of liquid required for SEP of leachable Hg in the Bloom method, which is a conventional SEP for Hg in a solid sample. The SEP with FCFS was optimized by considering the impact of extractant volume, circulation extraction time, and flushing of the extraction line. In the three-step (Fraction 1-3) sequential extraction of leachable Hg in soil samples, the optimized SEP with FCFS required 45 mL of extractant and 2.5 h, while the common batch SEP required 75 mL of extractant and 49 h. Furthermore, the combination of the SEP with FCFS for the leachable forms (Fraction 1-3) and the batch method for the insoluble forms (Fraction 4-5) was applied to the five-step SEP of Hg from CRM-JSAC0403. The sum of Hg concentrations that were classified into five fractions was in good agreement with that obtained from the batch method for all extraction, indicating that there are no significant differences in the concentrations extracted from the four channels.

Improving the protective ability of lignin against vascular and neurological development in BPAF-induced zebrafish by high-pressure homogenization technology

The lack of a sufficient amount of functional groups in the lignin structure limits its bioapplication. In this work, high-pressure homogenization was performed on original kraft lignin (L-ORI) to prepare lignin nanoparticles (L-NANO), which aimed to improve its functional group contents for further vascular and neurological applications. The results showed that the prepared L-NANO possessed spherical structures with diameters of 40.3-160.4 nm and increased amount of hydroxyl groups. Compared to L-ORI, L-NANO possessed better in vivo and in vitro antioxidant capacity, which could endow it with enhanced protective effects for the vascular and neural development of bisphenol AF (BPAF)-induced zebrafish. In addition, L-NANO reduced the neurotoxicity and cardiovascular toxicity of BPAF in zebrafish by upregulating the expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (Cu/Zn-Sod and cat), which could further significantly upregulate the expression levels of neurogenesis genes (elavl3, gap43, mbp, and syn2a) and protect the contraction of the cardinal vein (CCV) and early central nervous system development by upregulating the expression levels of vascular genes (flk1 and flt4). The excellent cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental protective ability of L-NANO indicated that high-pressure homogenization is a promising technology for improving the bioactivity of lignin.

Assessment of heavy metal accumulation in Penaeus monodon and its human health implications

Asian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon (P. monodon) of Chilika lagoon, India was studied regarding the metal accumulation and its associated human health risks. It showed a tendency of metal accumulation in the following order: Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Cr > Pb > Cd. A two-way ANOVA indicated the metal accumulation was insignificant with respect to season (n = 421, p = 0.59) and sector (n = 32, p = 0.61). The estimated daily intake (EDI), targeted hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risks (CR) revealed no potential human health risks and were safe for consumption. The pollution load index (PLI) of <1, Geo-accumulation index (Igeo,) and contamination factor (CF) indicated that the study area was unpolluted. This pioneering study highlighted that P. monodon was nurtured well in the healthy habitat of Chilika lagoon and the fair level of metal content made it an excellent source of dietary components.

Role of nanohybrid NiO–Fe3O4 in enhancing the adsorptive performance of activated carbon synthesized from Yemeni-Khat leave in removal of Pb (II) and Hg (II) from aquatic systems

Over years, existence of toxic chemical heavy metal in aquatic systems has motivated more research studies toward the preparation of effective stable solid adsorbents for the removal of toxic chemical pollutants. Therefore, in the current research study, activated carbon adsorbent (AC) was synthesized from Yemeni khat (catha edulis) leaves which are considered as waste accumulated on waste disposal areas in Yemen. KOH (2.0 N) was used as a chemical activator to produce the AC material which was subsequently heated at 400 °C. A simple co-precipitation method was used to chemically modify AC with varying weight ratios of NiO-Fe₃O₄ NPs (5, 15, and 25 wt %). The modified AC was used to remove toxic Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions from aquatic systems. Numerous techniques, which included x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherms, were used to confirm the morphology of AC and 5, 15, and 25 wt% NiO-Fe₃O₄/AC samples. The study findings demonstrated that, NiO-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles improved the adsorption efficiency for toxic Pb(II) and Hg (II) ions. The AC adsorbent attained maximum removal efficiencies of 88.95% and 87.56% for Pb (II) and Hg (II) ions, respectively. In contrast, 15-NF/AC NC sample successfully attained the highest removal efficiencies of 100% for pb(II) and 99.71% for Hg(II). According to the experimental findings, the prepared NF/AC adsorbents were effective and they can be used as inexpensive and stable solid nanoadsorbents in water treatment.

Association of Blood Mercury Level with Liver Enzymes in Korean Adults: An Analysis of 2015-2017 Korean National Environmental Health Survey

Increased liver enzymes as a result of exposure to mercury and their toxic effects are not well understood in Korea at the population level. The effect of blood mercury concentration on alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was evaluated after adjusting for sex, age, obesity, alcohol consumption habit, smoking, and exercise parameters in 3712 adults. The risk of abnormal liver function was measured using a multiple logistic regression analysis. Blood mercury concentration was divided into quartiles, and liver enzyme levels were compared for each quartile. ALT and AST levels were 10-20% higher in the second, third, and fourth quartiles compared to the first quartile. The risk of liver dysfunction or elevated liver enzymes was significantly higher in the second, third, and fourth quartiles than in the first quartile. As blood mercury levels increased, liver enzymes and mercury-induced hepatotoxicity increased. The increase in liver enzymes caused by mercury was more pronounced in the low-mercury concentration range. To reduce the long-standing problem of abnormal liver enzymes and liver function in Korea and other similar settings, it is important to decrease exposure to mercury through effective implementation of specific health and environmental strategies.

The role and mechanism of unfolded protein response signaling pathway in methylmercury-induced apoptosis of mouse spermatocytes germ cell-2 cells

The study aimed to explore the role and mechanism of unfolded protein response (UPR) in methylmercury (MeHg)-induced Mouse Spermatocytes (GC-2spd[ts]) apoptosis. Methods such as MTT, flow cytometry, and Western Blot were used to evaluate the cell viability, membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium ion (Ca²⁺ ), rate of cell apoptosis, and the expression of apoptosis-related and UPR-related protein. The results showed that with the increase of MeHg concentration, cell viability and MMP decreased, ROS, Ca²⁺ , rate of cell apoptosis, and the expression of apoptosis-related protein and UPR-related protein increased. To further explore the effect of ROS-induced oxidative damage on it, the ROS inhibitor N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) was used. The effects of MeHg on germ cell (GC-2) cells were partially inhibited after NAC pretreatment. Our present study proved that MeHg might induce cell apoptosis by activating the UPR signaling pathway in GC-2 cells and affect normal reproductive function.

Epigenome-wide DNA methylation in leukocytes and toenail metals: The normative aging study

BACKGROUND

Environmental metal exposures have been associated with multiple deleterious health endpoints. DNA methylation (DNAm) may provide insight into the mechanisms underlying these relationships. Toenail metals are non-invasive biomarkers, reflecting a medium-term time exposure window.

OBJECTIVES

This study examined variation in leukocyte DNAm and toenail arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and mercury (Hg) among elderly men in the Normative Aging Study, a longitudinal cohort.

METHODS

We repeatedly collected samples of blood and toenail clippings. We measured DNAm in leukocytes with the Illumina HumanMethylation450 K BeadChip. We first performed median regression to evaluate the effects of each individual toenail metal on DNAm at three levels: individual cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites, regions, and pathways. Then, we applied a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to assess the joint and individual effects of metal mixtures on DNAm. Significant CpGs were identified using a multiple testing correction based on the independent degrees of freedom approach for correlated outcomes. The approach considers the effective degrees of freedom in the DNAm data using the principal components that explain >95% variation of the data.

RESULTS

We included 564 subjects (754 visits) between 1999 and 2013. The numbers of significantly differentially methylated CpG sites, regions, and pathways varied by metals. For example, we found six significant pathways for As, three for Cd, and one for Mn. The As-associated pathways were associated with cancer (e.g., skin cancer) and cardiovascular disease, whereas the Cd-associated pathways were related to lung cancer. Metal mixtures were also associated with 47 significant CpG sites, as well as pathways, mainly related to cancer and cardiovascular disease.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides an approach to understanding the potential epigenetic mechanisms underlying observed relations between toenail metals and adverse health endpoints.

N-doped carbon nanospheres as selective fluorescent probes for mercury detection in contaminated aqueous media: chemistry, fluorescence probing, cell line patterning, and liver tissue interaction

A precise nano-scale biosensor was developed here to detect Hg²⁺ in aqueous media. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres (NCS) created from the pyrolysis of melamine-formaldehyde resin were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman spectra, EDS, PL, UV-vis spectra, and N₂ adsorption-desorption, and were used as a highly selective and sensitive probe for detecting Hg²⁺ in aqueous media. The sensitivity of NCS to Hg²⁺ was evaluated by photoluminescence intensity fluctuations under fluorescence emission in the vicinity of 390 nm with a λ_exc of 350 nm. The fluorescence intensity of the NCS probe weakened in the presence of Hg²⁺ owing to the effective fluorescence quenching by that, which is not corresponding to the special covalent liking between the ligand and the metal. The effects of the fluorescence nanoprobe concentration, pH, and sensing time were monitored to acquire the best conditions for determining Hg²⁺. Surprisingly, NCS revealed excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg²⁺ in the samples containing Co²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Al³⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, Ca²⁺, Cu²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺, Li⁺, Cs⁺, and Ba²⁺. The fluorescence response was linearly proportional to Hg²⁺ concentration in 0.013-0.046 µM with a limit of detection of 9.58 nM. The in vitro and in vivo toxicological analyses confirmed the completely safe and biocompatible features of NCS, which provides promise for use for water, fruit, vegetable, and/or other forms of natural-connected materials exposed to Hg²⁺, with no significant toxicity noticed toward different cells/organs/tissues.

Nonfatal Occupational Injuries Among Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining Workers in Ethiopia

Background

Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is widely practiced in Ethiopia. Injuries are among the public health concerns in the mining sector. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of nonfatal occupational injuries and associated factors among workers in ASGM in Ethiopia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study design was employed from April to June 2020. A total of 403 participants were selected with a simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was utilized for the data collection. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the information and binary logistic regression was applied to test the association. Predictor variables with P-value < .05 with an Odds ratio of 95% CI in multivariable analysis were considered as associated factors.

Results

A total of 403 participants were interviewed with a response rate of 95.5%. The prevalence of nonfatal occupational injury was 25.1% in the past 12 months. About one-third of the injuries, 32 (31.7%), were on the upper extremity and feet, 18 (17.8%). Symptoms of mercury toxicity (AOR: 2.39, 95% CI [1.27-4.52]), 1 to 4 years of work experience (AOR: 4.50, 95% CI [1.57-12.9]), full work shift (AOR: 6.06, 95% CI [1.97-18.7]), and job in the task of mining activities (AOR: 4.83, 95% CI [1.48-15.7]) were associated with the injury.

Conclusion

A substantially high prevalence of injuries was observed. Work-related factors were found to be significantly associated with the occurrence of injury. The government body, mining sector, and workers are advised to apply interventions focusing on the improvement of working conditions and safety practices to minimize injury.

Apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in infertility: A mini review

Infertility has been a major issue in our society for many years, and millions of couples all over the world are still experiencing it. There are several reasons for and causes of infertility in both men and women. Recent studies have shown that apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress contribute immensely to infertility. The data regarding this report were obtained through a thorough review of scientific articles published in various databases, including Elsevier, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Furthermore, PhD and MSc theses were also reviewed when compiling the data. Apoptosis, also known as "programmed cell death," is a natural and harmless process that occurs in human beings. Although it can become harmful if altered, Inflammation, on the other hand, is the body's reaction to detrimental stimuli caused by toxic substances or compounds, while oxidative stress is a phenomenon that results in an imbalance between the generation and aggregation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cells against antioxidants. These three factors interchangeably bring about several reproductive disorders in the body, resulting in infertility. This review aims at discussing how apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress play a role in human infertility.

Self-Associated 1,8-Naphthalimide as a Selective Fluorescent Chemosensor for Detection of High pH in Aqueous Solutions and Their Hg2+ Contamination

A novel diamino triazine based 1,8-naphthalimide (NI-DAT) has been designed and synthesized. Its photophysical properties have been investigated in different solvents and its sensory capability evaluated. The fluorescence emission of NI-DAT is significantly impacted by the solvent polarity due to its inherent intramolecular charge transfer character. Moreover, the fluorescence emission quenched at higher pH as a result of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from triazine moiety to 1,8-naphthalimide after cleaving hydrogen bonds in the self-associated dimers. Furthermore, the new chemosensor exhibited a good selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg²⁺ among all the used various cations and anions in the aqueous solution of ethanol (5:1, v/v, pH = 7.2, Tampon buffer). NI-DAT emission at 540 nm was quenched remarkably only by Hg²⁺, even in the presence of other cations or anions as interfering analytes. Job's plot revealed a 2:1 stoichiometric ratio for NI-DAT/Hg²⁺ complex, respectively.

Interrelationships among feather mercury content, body condition and feather corticosterone in a Neotropical migratory bird, the Purple Martin (Progne subis subis)

Purple Martins (Progne subis) are migratory birds that breed in North America and overwinter and complete their molt in South America. Many of the breeding populations are declining. The eastern North American subspecies of Purple Martin (P. subis subis) comprises >90% of all Purple Martins. This subspecies overwinters and molts in the Amazon Basin, a region that is high in mercury (Hg) contamination, which raises the possibility that observed declines in Purple Martins could be linked to Hg exposure. Exposure to Hg results in numerous and systemic negative health outcomes, including endocrine disruption. Corticosterone (CORT) is a primary modulator of the stress and metabolic axes of vertebrates; thus, it is important in meeting metabolic and other challenges of migration. Because feathers accumulate Hg and hormones while growing, quantification of Hg and CORT in feathers provides an opportunity to retrospectively assess Hg exposure and adrenal activity of birds using minimally invasive methods. We evaluated interrelationships among concentrations of total Hg (THg) and CORT in feathers that grew in the Amazon Basin and body condition (mass, fat score) of these birds in North America. Concentrations of THg in Purple Martin feathers ranged from 1.103 to 8.740 μg/g dw, levels associated with negative physiological impacts in other avian species. Concentrations of CORT did not correlate with THg concentration at the time of feather growth. However, we found evidence that THg concentration may negatively impact the ability of Purple Martins to accumulate fat, which could impair migratory performance and survivorship due to the high energy requirements of migration. This finding suggests potential carryover effects of Hg contamination at the wintering grounds in the Amazon to the summer breeding grounds in North America.

Role of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Nano-Selenium Alleviating Prehierarchical Follicular Atresia Induced by Mercury in Laying Hens

This study investigated that the effect of nano-selenium (nano-Se) addition preventing prehierarchical follicular atresia induced by mercury (Hg) exposure in laying hens. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway was explored to reveal the protective mechanism of nano-Se in vitro. The results revealed that Hg could significantly reduce laying performance (P < 0.05) and egg quality (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition partially reversed the reductions. Besides, Hg significantly induced the deposition of Hg in prehierarchical follicles (P < 0.05) and prehierarchical follicular atresia (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition could alleviate these toxicities in vitro. In addition, Hg exposure could significantly reduce cell viability (P < 0.05) and induce pyknotic nucleus in prehierarchical granulosa cells, while nano-Se addition reversed these effects. The levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (P < 0.05), luteinizing hormone (P < 0.05), progesterone (P < 0.05), and estradiol (P < 0.05) were significantly decreased after Hg exposure in vitro. However, nano-Se addition reversed the decreases of sex hormone levels. Furthermore, Hg exposure significantly increased the gene expressions of CHOP (P < 0.05), PERK (P < 0.05), ATF4 (P < 0.05), ATF6 (P < 0.05), ASK1 (P < 0.05), IRE1α (P < 0.05), TRAF2 (P < 0.05), caspase-9 (P < 0.05), caspase-3 (P < 0.05), and Bax/Bcl-2 (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se addition reversed these increases of gene expressions in vitro. In summary, this study provides that Hg can induce prehierarchical follicular atresia, whereas nano-Se addition can ameliorate it, and elucidates an important role of ER stress in nano-Se alleviating prehierarchical follicular atresia induced by Hg in laying hens.

Sensing of mercury ion using light induced aqueous leaf extract mediated green synthesized silver nanoparticles of Cestrum nocturnum L

In this study, a simple, one-pot, and eco-friendly biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was accomplished with the use of aqueous leaves extract of Cestrum nocturnum L.(AECN). Different techniques like ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning area electron diffraction were used to investigate the optical, operational, and physical properties of the green synthesized AECN-AgNPs.The AECN-AgNPs were further used for the detection of Hg²⁺ by UV-Vis and electrochemical methods. The disintegration of the AECN-AgNPs solution caused the formation of an Ag-Hg amalgam, which caused discoloration of the solution. Sensing performance for a variety of metals such as Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu ²⁺, Fe³⁺, Zn²⁺, Co²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, As³⁺, and Mn²⁺ at 10-mM concentrations was measured in order to determine the selectivity of the sensor towards the Hg²⁺. For the electrochemical determination of 2 + Hg²⁺ , AECN-AgNPs were immobilized on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode, and the resulting modified electrode (GC/AECN-AgNPs) was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. This phenomenon is advantageously used for the sensitive determination of trace level Hg²⁺. GC/AECN-AgNPs demonstrated a linear calibration range of 100 nM to 10 μM and a limit of detection of 21 nM for Hg²⁺ determination.

Electrochemical detection of selected heavy metals in water: a case study of African experiences

The safety of water resources throughout the globe has been compromised by various human activities and climate change over the last decades. Consequently, the world is currently confronted with a severe shortage of water supply and a water safety crisis, amidst a growing population. With poor environmental regulations, indiscriminate budding of urban slums, poverty, and a lack of basic knowledge of hygiene and sanitation, the African water supply has been critically threatened by different organic and inorganic contaminants, which results in several health issues. Inorganic pollutants such as heavy metals are particularly of interest because they are mostly stable and non-biodegradable. Therefore, they are not easily removed from water. In different parts of the continent, the concentration of heavy metals in drinking water far exceeds the permissible level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Worse still, this problem is expected to increase with growing population, industrialization, urbanization, and, of course, corruption of government and local officials. Most of the African population is ignorant of the standards of safe water. In addition, the populace lack access to affordable and reliable technologies and tools that could be used in the quantification of these pollutants. This problem is not only applicable to domestic, but also to commercial, communal, and industrial water sources. Hence, a global campaign has been launched to ensure constant assessment of the presence of these metals in the environment and to promote awareness of dangers associated with unsafe exposure to them. Various conventional spectroscopic heavy metal detection techniques have been used with great success across the world. However, such techniques suffer from some obvious setbacks, such as the cost of procurement and professionalism required to operate them, which have limited their applications. This paper, therefore, reviews the condition of African water sources, health implications of exposure to heavy metals, and the approaches explored by various indigenous electrochemists, to provide a fast, affordable, sensitive, selective, and stable electrochemical sensors for the quantification of the most significant heavy metals in our water bodies.
