Abstract
BACKGROUND There is insufficient clinical and microbiological evidence to support the use of diode laser and air-polishing with erythritol as supplements to scaling and root planning(SRP). The aim of the current study is to evaluate the clinical and microbiologic efficacy of erythritol subgingival air polishing and diode laser in treatment of periodontitis. METHODS The study encompassed twenty-four individuals seeking periodontal therapy and diagnosed with stage I and stage II periodontitis. Eight patients simply underwent SRP. Eight more patients had SRP followed by erythritol subgingival air polishing, and eight patients had SRP followed by diode laser application. At baseline and six weeks, clinical periodontal parameters were measured, including Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), periodontal Probing Depth (PPD), and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL). The bacterial count of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans(A.A), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.G) was evaluated at different points of time. RESULTS The microbiological assessment revealed significant differences in the count of A.A. between the laser and erythritol groups immediately after treatment, indicating a potential impact on microbial levels. However, the microbial levels showed fluctuations over the subsequent weeks, without statistically significant differences. Plaque indices significantly decreased post-treatment in all groups, with no significant inter-group differences. Gingival indices decreased, and the laser group showed lower values than erythritol and control groups. PPD and CAL decreased significantly across all groups, with the laser group exhibiting the lowest values. CONCLUSION The supplementary use of diode laser and erythritol air polishing, alongside SRP, represents an expedited periodontal treatment modality. This approach leads to a reduction in bacteria and improvement in periodontal health. TRIAL REGISTRATION This clinical trial was registered on Clinical Trials.gov (Registration ID: NCT06209554) and released on 08/01/2024.

Abstract
Inflammation-associated diseases are very common clinically with a high incidence; however, there is still a lack of effective treatments. Cell-biomimetic nanoplatforms have led to many breakthroughs in the field of biomedicine, significantly improving the efficiency of drug delivery and its therapeutic implications especially for inflammation-associated diseases. Macrophages are an important component of immune cells and play a critical role in the occurrence and progression of inflammation-associated diseases while simultaneously maintaining homeostasis and modulating immune responses. Therefore, macrophage-biomimetic nanoplatforms not only inherit the functions of macrophages including the inflammation tropism effect for targeted delivery of drugs and the neutralization effect of pro-inflammatory cytokines and toxins via membrane surface receptors or proteins, but also maintain the functions of the inner nanoparticles. Macrophage-biomimetic nanoplatforms are shown to have remarkable therapeutic efficacy and excellent application potential in inflammation-associated diseases. In this review, inflammation-associated diseases, the physiological functions of macrophages, and the classification and construction of macrophage-biomimetic nanoplatforms are first introduced. Next, the latest applications of different macrophage-biomimetic nanoplatforms for the treatment of inflammation-associated diseases are summarized. Finally, challenges and opportunities for future biomedical applications are discussed. It is hoped that the review will provide new ideas for the further development of macrophage-biomimetic nanoplatforms.

Abstract
Background Reducing the levels of oral microbials, including Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, and Lactobacilli sp., would provide the prevention of dental caries and oral illness. Aims To assess the antimicrobial effectiveness against oral pathogens of oral care products that contain urginea maritima extract (UM) extract, including lozenges, mouth spray, and mouthwash. Methods The skin irritation test was conducted on each product compared with controls in healthy participants (n = 10) by the 24-hour closed obstruction patch test. The elimination of oral pathogens in participants (n = 30) before and after product usage (as per the instruction) was assessed using a modified dip slide test. Result The physical appearance and stability of oral care products were almost preferable. When added to oral care products for oral health maintenance, the cariogenic bacteria S. mutans, Candida species, and Lactobacilli species have been found to exhibit antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the periodontal treatment outcomes in patients with periodontitis treated using conventional and microsurgical access flap procedure. Materials and Methods Fifty chronic periodontitis patients were randomly assigned to conventional (Group I) and microsurgical (Group II) open flap debridement procedure. The parameters measured were probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival recession (GR), bleeding on probing (BOP), wound healing, and postoperative pain. PD, CAL, GR, and BOP were assessed at pretreatment (baseline) and 3 months postoperatively. Wound healing was assessed using Landrey et al. healing index at 7th day and 3 months postoperatively and postoperative pain was assessed using number of analgesics taken for 7 days following surgery. Results Healing Index score of 4 (very good healing) was found in 40% of sites of Group I and 95% of sites of Group II. Comparison of number of analgesics taken between groups on day 7 showed a statistically significant difference (P < 0.01), indicating that pain was significantly reduced in Group II compared to Group I. At 3 months postoperatively, there was no significant reduction in PD, CAL, GR, and BOP between the groups. Conclusions In open flap debridement procedure, a microsurgical approach can substantially improve the early healing and induce less postoperative pain when compared to a conventional macroscopic approach.

Abstract
Periodontitis causes inflammatory destructions of tooth-supporting tissue and constitutes a significant burden on public health. Failing to reserve the tissue damage and bone loss by any of the currently available therapies has left periodontitis uncurable thus far. Understanding the molecular mechanism in the inflammatory process is crucial to elucidating the pathogenesis and enlightening new therapeutic strategies for periodontitis. This study was to investigate whether and how ferroptosis, a newly-discovered form of cell death, was involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Healthy and periodontitis human gingiva samples were collected and ligature-induced periodontitis murine models were constructed to investigate the role of ferroptosis in periodontitis. Single-cell RNA sequencing data was analyzed to identify the cell type that underwent ferroptosis. The susceptibility of human gingival fibroblasts to ferroptosis was investigated by in vitro cell cultures. We found that gingival fibroblasts undergo ferroptosis in periodontitis, and that periodontitis-induced tissue damage and bone loss were alleviated by inhibition of ferroptosis. Periodontitis-induced pro-inflammatory immune responses was featured by profound elevation of fibroblast-derived Interleukin-6, which was attenuated by ferroptosis inhibition. These results indicated fibroblast ferroptosis as a new clue to unveiling the cellular and molecular basis for periodontitis-induced tissue damage. Involvement of ferroptosis/Interleukin-6 signaling in the pathogenic process suggested a potential target for immunopharmacological approaches to curing periodontitis.

Abstract
Oral diseases are among the most common diseases around the world that people usually suffer from during their lifetime. Tooth decay is a multifactorial disease, and the composition of oral microbiota is a critical factor in its development. Also, Streptococcus mutans is considered the most important caries-causing species. It is expected that probiotics, as they adjust the intestinal microbiota and reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in the human intestine, can exert their health-giving effects, especially the anti-pathogenic effect, in the oral cavity, which is part of the human gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have been conducted on the role of probiotics in the prevention of tooth decay. In this review, while investigating the effect of different strains of probiotics Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria on oral diseases, including dental caries, candida yeast infections, periodontal diseases, and halitosis, we have also discussed postbiotics as novel non-living biological compounds derived from probiotics.

Abstract
Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process comprising cellular and molecular events which result in cells shifting from an epithelial to a mesenchymal phenotype. Periodontitis is a destructive chronic disease of the periodontium initiated in response to a dysbiotic microbiome, and dominated by Gram-negative bacteria in the subgingival niches accompanied by an aberrant immune response in susceptible subjects. Both EMT and periodontitis share common risk factors and drivers, including Gram-negative bacteria, excess inflammatory cytokine production, smoking, oxidative stress and diabetes mellitus. In addition, periodontitis is characterized by down-regulation of key epithelial markers such as E-cadherin together with up-regulation of transcriptional factors and mesenchymal proteins, including Snail1, vimentin and N-cadherin, which also occur in the EMT program. Clinically, these phenotypic changes may be reflected by increases in microulceration of the pocket epithelial lining, granulation tissue formation, and fibrosis. Both in vitro and in vivo data now support the potential involvement of EMT as a pathogenic mechanism in periodontal diseases which may facilitate bacterial invasion into the underlying gingival tissues and propagation of inflammation. This review surveys the available literature and provides evidence linking EMT to periodontitis pathogenesis.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the volumetric stability around immediate implants, in which a 360-degree socket-shield was retained using the CastleWall Surgical Technique (CWST). Material and methods: This retrospective study examined the results of the CWST used for 25 consecutive patients, involving 31 immediate implants. Silicone impressions taken prior to extraction, and at a review appointment were converted to STL files and compared. The median follow-up time was 14.2 ± 5.5 months. Volumetric changes and gingival recession on both buccal and lingual sites were measured. Papillary height changes were also evaluated from available photographs taken before and after treatment. Patients in the study completed a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for evaluation of post-operative discomfort and overall satisfaction with this procedure. Results: All implants integrated successfully without complications. Mean loss of buccal and lingual tissue was 0.30 ± 0.32 mm and 0.17 ± 0.27 mm, respectively. Mean recession at the mid-buccal and mid-lingual gingival margin was 0.66 ± 0.64 mm and 0.87 ± 0.84 mm, respectively. Mean recession of the mesial and distal papilla was 0.26 ± 0.55 mm and 0.29 ± 0.52 mm, respectively. Patients reported 97.74 ± 5.60% satisfaction with this procedure using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), with minimal post-operative discomfort. Conclusions: The results of this study showed excellent soft tissue stability and aesthetics were achieved using the CWST, with minimal postoperative pain. The other main advantage of retaining a 360-degree socket-shield, is there is more available surface area to lock the implant to the shield to prevent shield migration over time.

Abstract
Periodontal hastalıklar toplumda yaygın bir şekilde görülmektedir. Son yıllarda yapılan çalışmalarla periodontal hastalıkların sistemik hastalıklara, benzer şekilde sistemik rahatsızlıklarında periodontal hastalıklara katkıda bulunabileceği bilinmektedir. Periodontal hastalıklar ve sistemik hastalıklar arasındaki bu iki yönlü ilişki son yıllarda dikkat çekici bir şekilde araştırmalara neden olmuştur. Bu konulardan biri de erektil disfonksiyondur. Periodontal hastalıkların erektil disfonksiyon ile ilişkisi ilgi çekicidir. Farklı etyolojiye sahip olan erektil disfonksiyonda periodontal hastalıkların etkisi son dönemde sıkça araştırılmıştır.
Bu geleneksel derlemede, tedavi sağlayıcılara periodontal hastalıkların genel özellikleri, erektil disfonksiyonun genel özellikleri ve birbiri ile olan ilişkiler üzerinde durulacaktır.

It is of interest to report data on periodontal Health among elderly people in Bushland, Jharkhand, Magadha and Patna, India. The sample comprised of a 130 elderly people. The studies device comprised of a semi-structured survey with thirteen questions. Data shows that old people in Jharkhand suffered from advanced periodontal ailment (47.6%) with easy gingivitis (33.8%). Data also shows that grownups (88.2% grownup males, 64.5% girls in Jharkhand and 34.5% grownup males and 88.9% girls in Bihar) used toothpaste and toothbrush as their primary style for tooth cleansing. These data help in providing improved dental service to rural population in India.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate abundance of specific bacterial taxa in the saliva of 105 Thai adults with different BMI (lean, overweight, and obese) and T2DM subjects using qPCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene of various bacteria taxa. DESIGN We employed qPCR targeting 16S rRNA genes to explore the bacterial profiles and abundances in the saliva of Thai adult subjects with different BMI and T2DM. Multivariate statistical analyses (multiple factor analysis (MFA) and sparse Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (sPLS-DA) were performed to assess the associations of salivary bacteria with diet, blood profile, gender, age, and use of antibiotics. RESULTS We found that abundance profiles of the examined salivary bacteria were similar across the four groups. When diet, blood profile, and gender, age, and use of antibiotics were considered, significant differences were noted between subgroups. A positive correlation was also found between consumption of carbonate soft drinks and Bacteroidetes, Gamma-proteobacteria, Veillonella, Fusobacterium and Fusobacterium nucleatum. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study demonstrating the relative abundance of salivary bacteria in adult Thai subjects with different levels of BMI and T2DM. Regardless of the similar pattern of bacterial profiles across groups, sPLS-DA analysis highlighted the influence of host variables (gender, age, and use of antibiotics) on the abundance of salivary microbiota. Our findings pave the way for further hypothesis testing to gain insight into the association between host factors and salivary microbiome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine if low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) activates autophagy in human periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) irrespective of lipopolysaccharide. DESIGN Six groups were designed: control, LIPUS, lipopolysaccharide, LIPUS + lipopolysaccharide, LIPUS+3-Methyladenine, LIPUS + lipopolysaccharide+3-Methyl- adenine. LIPUS pretreated PDLCs for 2 h and lipopolysaccharide treated for different times. Real-time PCR and Western-blot were performed to evaluate mRNA and protein expression levels of autophagic genes Beclin-1 and LC3 respectively. A transmission electronic microscope was used to observe the autophagosome. ELISA was used to test interleukin-6 expression. RESULTS Compared with the non-treatment, LIPUS pretreatment increased mRNA expression levels of LC3 (P < 0.05) and Beclin-1 (P < 0.05) at 4 h and 8 h, and enhanced the protein expression levels of LC3-Ⅱ at 8 h (P<0.05) and Beclin-1 at 4 h, 8 h and 16 h(P<0.05). After LIPUS pretreatment and lipopolysaccharide treatment for 8 h, LC3-Ⅱ and Beclin-1 protein expression levels were elevated (P < 0.05) compared with the control. Following further treatment by 3-Methyladenine, Beclin-1 protein expression was decreased (P < 0.05) compared with the LIPUS plus lipopolysaccharide group, but LC3-Ⅱ protein expression was not. Autophagosomes were not found in the LIPUS+3-Methyladenine and LIPUS+lipopolysaccharide+3-Methyladenine groups. After LIPUS pretreatment and lipopolysaccharide treatment for 36 h, intreleukin-6 expression was decreased (P<0.05) compared with the lipopolysaccharide group. However, after addition of 3-Methyladenine, intreleukin-6 expression was elevated (P < 0.05) compared with the LIPUS +lipopolysaccharide group. CONCLUSIONS LIPUS can promote autophagy in PDLCs irrespective of lipopolysaccharide. Autophagy might be involved in LIPUS anti-inflammatory mechanism in PDLCS.

Abstract
Dental implant diseases, peri-implantitis (PI) and peri-implant mucositis (PIM), have shown wide prevalence in recent studies. Despite the prevalence, diagnosing peri-implant disease (PID) remains challenging as common diagnostic methods of periodontal probing and radiographs may be inaccurate. These methods only document pre-existing destruction rather than current disease activity. Furthermore, there is no current model to predict the progression of PID. Though a predictive model is lacking, biomarkers may offer some potential. Biomarkers are commonly used in medicine to objectively determine disease state, or responses to a therapeutic intervention. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biomarkers have moderate diagnostic validity in periodontitis. Biomarkers in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) also show promising results in regard to their diagnostic and prognostic value. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge of PICF biomarkers in the diagnosis of PID and evaluate their validity to predict disease progression. This review found that PICF studies utilize different methods of sampling and interpretation with varying validity (sensitivity and specificity). A number of promising diagnostic techniques were identified. Commercially available chair-side tests for MMP-8 to diagnose periodontal disease and PID activity are now available. Future directions include proteomics and metabolomics for accurate, site-specific diagnosis and prediction of PID progression. Although more research is needed, this review concludes that the assessment of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNFα, MMP-8) in the PICF may be of value to diagnose PI and PIM but current research remains insufficient to indicate whether biomarkers predict peri-implant disease progression.

Abstract
Tooth loss among adults is associated with progressive periodontitis. Implant prosthetic treatment has long been utilized in periodontal patients. Even when the implants are applied, ongoing management of periodontal disease and control of inflammation is necessary to maintain a healthy oral cavity. Lack of appropriate periodontal treatment can result in recurrence of periodontal disease during a maintenance period; loss of the supportive capacity of the periodontal tissues will increase the susceptibility of residual teeth to traumatic force. For this reason, it is worthwhile to improve oral function by applying implants as a fixed device. Here, we report that implant treatment in a patient with generalized severe chronic periodontitis helped maintain the periodontal and peri-implant tissue for a long term. We propose that initial periodontal treatment and ongoing supportive therapy can help maintain implants in patients with severe periodontitis. In addition, we reviewed case reports in the English literature so far.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is an anaerobic gram-negative bacterium that colonizes in the epithelium and has been strongly associated with periodontal disease. Recently, various degrees of associations between P. gingivalis and digestive system cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma in the oral cavity, oesophageal squamous carcinoma in the digestive tract, and pancreatic cancer in pancreatic tissues, have been displayed in multiple clinical and experimental studies. Since P. gingivalis has a strong association with periodontal diseases, not only the relationships between P. gingivalis and digestive system tumours but also the effects induced by periodontal diseases on cancers are well-illustrated in this review. In addition, the prevention and possible treatments for these digestive system tumours induced by P. gingivalis infection are also included in this review. At the end, we also highlighted the possible mechanisms of cancers caused by P. gingivalis. One important carcinogenic effect of P. gingivalis is inhibiting the apoptosis of epithelial cells, which also plays an intrinsic role in protecting cancerous cells. Some signalling pathways activated by P. gingivalis are involved in cell apoptosis, tumourigenesis, immune evasion and cell invasion of tumour cells. In addition, metabolism of potentially carcinogenic substances caused by P. gingivalis is also one of the connections between this bacterium and cancers.

Abstract
The development of pharmaceutical agents possessing anti‑invasive and anti‑metastatic abilities, as well as apoptotic activity, is important in decreasing the incidence and recurrence of oral cancer. Cancer cells are known to acquire invasiveness not only through epigenetic changes, but also from inflammatory stimuli within the tumor microenvironment. Accordingly, the identification of agents that can suppress the inflammation‑promoted invasiveness of cancer cells may be important in treating cancer and improving the prognosis of patients with cancer. Acetylshikonin, a flavonoid with anti‑inflammatory activity, inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of oral cancer cells. In the present study, the anti‑invasive effect of acetylshikonin on YD10B oral cancer cells infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major pathogen of chronic periodontitis, and the mechanisms involved were investigated. Firstly, we examined whether P. gingivalis infection increased the invasiveness of YD10B cells. Results suggested that YD10B oral cancer cells become more aggressive when they are infected with P. gingivalis. Secondly, acetylshikonin significantly inhibited the invasion of P. gingivalis‑infected YD10B cells by suppressing IL‑8 release and IL‑8‑dependent MMP release. These data suggest that acetylshikonin may be a useful preventive and therapeutic candidate for oral cancer that is chronically infected with periodontal pathogens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing interest in the use of probiotics in periodontal therapy; however, until now, most research has focused on lactobacilli probiotics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of 4-week use of yogurt supplemented with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis DN-173010 versus a placebo yogurt, followed by a 5-day non-brushing period. METHODS Individuals were included in this single-mask, randomized, controlled study if probing depth (PD) was ≤3 mm and attachment loss was ≤2 mm. After professional prophylaxis, they were randomized into two groups receiving yogurt containing either placebo or B. animalis for 28 days, followed by a 5-day non-brushing period. Outcome measures were plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), PD, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) volume, and total amount and concentration of interleukin (IL)-1β in GCF. These were measured at baseline, after 28 days of study product use, and subsequently after 5 days of plaque accumulation. RESULTS Fifty-one patients were analyzed. No intergroup differences could be detected before and after intake of study products. However, after plaque accumulation, significantly better results for all parameters were seen in the probiotic group compared with the control group (P <0.001): lower PI and GI, less BOP, less increase in GCF volume, and lower IL-1β total amount/concentration. CONCLUSION The use of a probiotic yogurt supplemented with B. animalis can have a positive effect on plaque accumulation and gingival inflammatory parameters after refraining from oral hygiene practices.

Abstract
Recent studies indicate that chronic inflammation promotes the aggressiveness of cancers. However, the direct molecular mechanisms underlying a functional link between chronic periodontitis, the most common form of oral inflammatory diseases, and the malignancy of oral cancer remain unknown. To elucidate the role of chronic periodontitis in progression of oral cancer, we examined the effect of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), a major pathogen that causes chronic periodontitis, on the invasiveness of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells, including SCC-25, OSC-20 and SAS cells. Exposures to P. gingivalis promoted the invasive ability of OSC-20 and SAS cells via the upregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-1 and MMP-2. However, P. gingivalis-infected SCC-25 cells did not exhibit changes in their invasive properties or the low expression levels of MMPs. In an effort to delineate the molecular players that control the invasiveness, we first assessed the level of interleukin-8 (IL-8), a well-known inflammatory cytokine, in P. gingivalis-infected OSCC cells. IL-8 secretion was substantially increased in the OSC-20 and SAS cells, but not in the SCC-25 cells, following P. gingivalis infection. When IL-8 was directly applied to SCC-25 cells, their invasive ability and MMP level were significantly increased. Furthermore, the downregulation of IL-8 in P. gingivalis-infected OSC-20 and SAS cells attenuated their invasive potentials and MMP levels. Taken together, our findings strongly suggest that P. gingivalis infection plays an important role in the promotion of the invasive potential of OSCC cells via the upregulation of IL-8 and MMPs.

Abstract
Background: The oral cavity being a natural moist environment, topical application reduces its potency and effectiveness, but the nanoparticles in the Nano-Bio Fusion (NBF) gel are efficient in rapidly penetrating the cells. The purpose of the study aimed to evaluate clinically and microbiologically the effectiveness of locally delivered NBF technology gel as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Six chronic periodontitis patients with 76 sites and probing pocket depth (PD) between 5 and 7 mm were selected in a randomized controlled clinical trial. SRP was performed in both control and test group followed by NBF gel application in 38 sites. The plaque index, gingival index, papillary bleeding index, probing PD, and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline, 6 weeks, and 3 months. Supragingival microbial plaque analysis was done at baseline and 6 weeks interval. The statistical analysis with paired t-test was used to compare the test and control sites. Results: From baseline to a period of 3 months, a statistically significant difference was seen between both groups for PD, CAL, P value being PD (P = 0.001) and CAL (P = 0.01) along with the significant reduction of colony-forming units of aerobic periodontopathogens. Conclusions: Locally delivered NBF gel exhibited a significant improvement compared with SRP alone in chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This study assessed the effects of the local use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as monotherapy and as an adjuvant to the mechanical treatment of ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Periodontitis was induced in 72 rats via the installation of a ligature around the mandibular first molar. After 7 d, the ligature was removed and the rats were placed in one of the following groups: no treatment (C; n = 18); scaling and root planing (SRP; n = 18); local irrigation with probiotics (PRO; n = 18); and SRP followed by local irrigation with probiotics (SRP/PRO; n = 18). Six rats from each group were killed at 7, 15 and 30 d. The histological characteristics, alveolar bone loss (ABL) and immunolabeling of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and TRAP on the furcation area of the first molar were assessed. RESULTS The PRO group showed features of acceleration of the tissue-repair process during the entire experiment. On day 15, there was less ABL in the SRP/PRO group compared with the C group. There were fewer TRAP-positive cells in the SRP and SRP/PRO groups at 30 d. There was less immunostaining for TNF-α in the PRO and SRP/PRO groups and less immunostaining for IL-1β in the PRO group. However, there was more immunostaining for IL-10 in the PRO group on day 15. CONCLUSION Local use of the probiotic did not result in any adverse effects on periodontal tissues. When used as monotherapy or as an adjuvant, the probiotic was effective at controlling periodontitis in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of pure green coffee bean extract on periodonto pathogenic bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). MATERIALS AND METHODS Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were used to assess the antibacterial effect of pure green coffee bean extract against periodonto pathogenic bacteria by micro dilution method and culture method, respectively. RESULTS MIC values of Pg, Pi and Aa were 0.2 μg/ml whereas Fn showed sensitive at concentration of 3.125 μg/ml. MBC values mirrors the values same as that of MIC. CONCLUSION Antimicrobial activity of pure green coffee bean extract against Pg, Pi, Fn and Aa suggests that it could be recommended as an adjunct to mechanical therapy in the management of periodontal disease.

Abstract
DNA microarray analysis is a computer based technology, that a reverse capture, which targets 10 periodontal bacteria (ParoCheck) is available for rapid semi-quantitative determination. The aim of this three-year retrospective study was to display the microarray analysis results for the subgingival biofilm samples taken from patient cases diagnosed with different forms of periodontitis. A total of 84 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP,n:29), generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP, n:25), peri-implantitis (PI,n:14), localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP,n:8) and refractory chronic periodontitis (RP,n:8) were consecutively selected from the archives of the Oral Microbiological Diagnostic Laboratory. The subgingival biofilm samples were analyzed by the microarray-based identification of 10 selected species. All the tested species were detected in the samples. The red complex bacteria were the most prevalent with very high levels in all groups. Fusobacterium nucleatum was detected in all samples at high levels. The green and blue complex bacteria were less prevalent compared with red and orange complex, except Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitas was detected in all LAP group. Positive correlations were found within all the red complex bacteria and between red and orange complex bacteria especially in GCP and GAP groups. Parocheck enables to monitoring of periodontal pathogens in all forms of periodontal disease and can be alternative to other guiding and reliable microbiologic tests.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the importance of the human oral microbiome for health and disease is increasingly recognized, variation in the composition of the oral microbiome across different climates and geographic regions is largely unexplored. RESULTS Here we analyze the saliva microbiome from native Alaskans (76 individuals from 4 populations), Germans (10 individuals from 1 population), and Africans (66 individuals from 3 populations) based on next-generation sequencing of partial 16S rRNA gene sequences. After quality filtering, a total of 67,916 analyzed sequences resulted in 5,592 OTUs (defined at ≥97% identity) and 123 genera. The three human groups differed significantly by the degree of diversity between and within individuals (e.g. beta diversity: Africans > Alaskans > Germans; alpha diversity: Germans > Alaskans > Africans). UniFrac, network, ANOSIM, and correlation analyses all indicated more similarities in the saliva microbiome of native Alaskans and Germans than between either group and Africans. The native Alaskans and Germans also had the highest number of shared bacterial interactions. At the level of shared OTUs, only limited support for a core microbiome shared across all three continental regions was provided, although partial correlation analysis did highlight interactions involving several pairs of genera as conserved across all human groups. Subsampling strategies for compensating for the unequal number of individuals per group or unequal sequence reads confirmed the above observations. CONCLUSION Overall, this study illustrates the distinctiveness of the saliva microbiome of human groups living under very different climatic conditions.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri-containing probiotic lozenges as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty chronic periodontitis patients were recruited and monitored clinically and microbiologically at baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after therapy. All patients received one-stage full-mouth disinfection and randomly assigned over a test (SRP + probiotic, n = 15) or control (SRP + placebo, n = 15) group. The lozenges were used two times a day for 12 weeks. RESULTS At week 12, all clinical parameters were significantly reduced in both groups, while there was significantly more pocket depth reduction (p < 0.05) and attachment gain (p < 0.05) in moderate and deep pockets; more Porphyromonas gingivalis reduction was observed in the SRP + probiotic group. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that oral administration of L. reuteri lozenges could be a useful adjunct to SRP in chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been long recognized that periodontal diseases are infections of the periodontium, comprising the bacterial etiology, an immune response, and tissue destruction. Treatment strategies aiming primarily at suppressing or eliminating specific periodontal pathogens include adjunct use of local and systemic antibiotics as part of nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Unwanted side effects and resistance of microorganisms toward antibiotics due to their widespread use have modified the general perception about their efficacy. Research in phytosciences has revealed various medicinal plants offering a new choice of optional antimicrobial therapy. Cymbopogon citratus, Stapf. (lemongrass) is a popular medicinal plant. At a concentration ≤2%, lemongrass essential oil inhibits the growth of several kinds of microorganisms including periodontal pathogens, especially the reference strains Actinomyces naeslundii and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which were resistant to tetracycline hydrochloride. AIMS To evaluate the efficacy of locally delivered 2% lemongrass essential oil in gel form as an adjunct to scaling and root planing, as compared to scaling and root planing alone for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS 2% Lemongrass essential oil gel was prepared and placed in moderate to deep periodontal pockets after scaling and root planing. RESULTS Statistically significant reduction in probing depth and gingival index and gain in relative attachment level were noted in the experimental group as compared to the control group at 1 and 3 months. CONCLUSION Locally delivered 2% lemongrass essential oil gel offers a new choice of safe and effective adjunct to scaling and root planing in periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND With increase in the incidence of resistance to antibiotics, probiotics are emerging as a promising adjunctive periodontal therapy. The authors of this study evaluate the influence of probiotic (PROB) supplementation on ligature-induced periodontitis (LIP) and intestinal morphology in rats. METHODS Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into four groups: control (C), LIP, PROB, and LIP/PROB. In groups PROB and LIP/PROB, the PROB was administered orally by addition to the drinking water of the animals for 44 days. In groups LIP and LIP/PROB, the mandibular right first molar of the animals received a cotton ligature that was left in the same position for 14 days. All animals were euthanized 44 days after the start of the PROB supplementation. The jaws were resected and histomorphometric analyses were performed. The measurements included evaluation of attachment loss (AL) and alveolar bone level (ABL) on the distal root of the mandibular first molar. Samples of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were also dissected from each animal to evaluate the villous height (VH) and crypt depth (CD). The data obtained were subjected to statistical analyses (analysis of variance, Tukey; P <0.05). RESULTS Mean values of AL and ABL were significantly higher in group LIP compared with group LIP/PROB (AL: 3.05 ± 0.57 mm and 1.78 ± 0.63 mm, respectively; ABL: 4.21 ± 0.42 mm and 3.38 ± 0.17 mm, respectively). In group LIP/PROB, the mean values of VH and CD of the jejunum were significantly higher than the ones from group LIP (VH: 672.1 ± 83.3 µm and 528.0 ± 51.7 µm, respectively; CD: 463.8 ± 100.9 µm and 269.0 ± 48.4 µm, respectively). CONCLUSIONS It can be concluded that PROB supplementation 1) reduces AL and alveolar bone loss in rats with LIP and 2) can protect the small intestine from reactive changes induced by LIP.

Abstract
Background Over-replication of periodontal pathogens in the periodontium induces production of proinflammatory cytokines and C-reactive protein that can stimulate systemic inflammatory status and can initiate atherosclerosis and its consequences. In our pilot study we examined whether periodontal status and serum levels of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein are associated with the presence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the periodontium of patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Material/Methods We randomly selected 38 of 166 outpatients with CVD, of which 21 patients had chronic ischemic heart disease (IHD) only and 17 had both IHD and essential hypertension (HT). The presence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.) in the periodontium evaluated by PCR was compared with the values of periodontal indices, namely probe depth (PD) and Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need (CPITN), as well as with interleukin-6 (IL-6) and CRP serum levels. Results When comparing A.a.-positive and A.a.-negative groups of patients, no statistically significant differences were noticed as to the age and values of PD and CPITN, respectively. However, the proportion of CRP and IL-6 positive values was significantly higher (p≤0.001) among A.a.-positive than in A.a.-negative patients. Conclusions The presence of A.a. in patients with CVD may be associated with significantly higher serum levels of some proinflammatory markers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As in other fields of healthcare, probiotics have been introduced for prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. OBJECTIVE This review was initiated to explore whether the use of probiotics can influence the periodontal microbiota and periodontal health. MATERIALS AND METHODS Literature on the mode of action of oral probiotics was reviewed and a systematic review was performed on the microbiological and clinical effects of oral probiotics on periodontal health. RESULTS Three animal and 11 in vivo human studies were retrieved. Six studies reported on microbiological effects whereas eight studies report on clinical effects. Seven studies were performed on healthy or gingivitis patients and four studies on periodontitis patients. Many of the retrieved studies are pilot in nature and with low quality. The high degree of heterogeneity between studies hampered analysis. CONCLUSION Taking into consideration all limitations, the currently available data indicate an effect of probiotics on the oral microbiota and a more limited effect on clinical periodontal outcome measures. However, there is an urgent need for properly conducted clinical trials where probiotics are used as adjuncts to standard periodontal care, similar to antibiotics, using probiotic strains with, at least at an in vitro level, proven periodontal probiotic effects.

Abstract
One of the principal problems in oral implantation is inflammation of peri-implant hard and soft tissues caused by bacterial biofilms. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the microbial diversity of peri-implant biofilms on 2 different implant-anchored attachment types in vivo. Samples of peri-implant sulcus fluid were collected from 8 patients with implant-supported bar attachments and 8 patients with implant-anchored telescopic double crown attachments. Samples of sulcus fluid of the adjacent teeth were also collected from the partially edentulous patients with implant fixed telescopic double crowns. The mixed amplicons of 16S rRNA fragments of different bacterial origins were separated by use of single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis to identify the predominant bacterial genera. With 3.5 ± 2.1 different predominant bacterial genera in the sulcus fluid surrounding implant-supported bar attachments and 6.3 ± 3.1 different predominant genera in the sulcular fluid of implant-anchored double crown attachments, the differences were not statistically significant (P = .11). The microbial diversity in the sulcus fluid surrounding the remaining dentition was similar to that of the implant fixed telescopic attachments (6.3 ± 2.1). Aside from host response and other individual factors, the microbial diversity of peri-implant biofilms seems to be impaired by cofactors such as the possibility of cleaning the implant-supported supraconstructions and the different plaque-retaining sites. Nevertheless, these differences do not lead to statistically significant differences in the microbial diversity of peri-implant plaques.

Abstract
Chronic periodontitis is associated with systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of serum IgG antibody titer to periodontal bacteria for prognosis of periodontitis recurrence during supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) phase. The 139 patients during SPT phase were selected and divided to two groups as follows: "Stable" and "Recurrence" group at SPT phase for case-control study: "High IgG titer" and "Normal IgG titer" group before transition to SPT phase for cohort study. We examined whether clinical findings or serum IgG antibody titers to periodontal bacteria are risk factors for the development of periodontitis recurrence. Case-control study showed that there were significant differences between the stable and recurrence groups in age and number of teeth. The serum IgG antibody titer to Eikenella corrodens FDC1073, Porphyromonas gingivalis SU63, and Campylobacter rectus ATCC33238 was significantly higher in the recurrence group. Next, we found, that the recurrence ratio in the high IgG titer group to Gram-negative obligate anaerobe, Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, and C. rectus was significantly higher than that of the normal IgG titer group. Taken together, serum IgG antibody titer test is useful in the prognosis of periodontitis recurrence during the SPT phase.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Periodontitis results from a shift in the subgingival microflora into a more pathogenic direction with Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans considered as periodontopathogens. In many cases, treatment procures only a temporary shift towards a less pathogenic microflora. An alternative treatment could be the deliberate colonization of pockets with antagonistic microorganisms to control the adhesion of periodontopathogens. The aim of this study was to identify bacterial strains that reduce adhesion of periodontopathogens to surfaces. METHODS Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus crista, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus mitis, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Haemophilus parainfluenzae were evaluated as potential antagonists against P. gingivalis ATCC 33277, P. intermedia ATCC 49046, and A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718 as periodontopathogens. Adhesion of periodontopathogens to the bottom plate of a parallel plate flow chamber was studied in the absence (control) and the presence of pre-adhering antagonistic strains up to a surface coverage of 5%. RESULTS The largest reduction caused by antagonistic strains was observed for P. gingivalis. All antagonistic strains except S. crista ATCC 49999 inhibited the adhesion of P. gingivalis by at least 1.6 cells per adhering antagonist, with the largest significant reduction observed for A. naeslundii ATCC 51655 (3.8 cells per adhering antagonist). Adhering antagonists had a minimal effect on the adhesion of A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43718. Intermediate but significant reductions were perceived for P. intermedia, most notably caused by S. mitis BMS. CONCLUSION The adhesion of P. gingivalis was inhibited best by antagonistic strains, while S. mitis BMS appeared to be the most successful antagonist.

Abstract
Formulations containing poloxamer 407 (P407), carbopol 934P (C934P), and propolis extract (PE) were designed for the treatment of periodontal disease. Gelation temperature, in vitro drug release, rheology, hardness, compressibility, adhesiveness, mucoadhesion, and syringeability of formulations were determined. Propolis release from formulations was controlled by the phenomenon of relaxation of polymer chains. Formulations exhibited pseudoplastic flow and low degrees of thixotropy or rheopexy. In most samples, increasing the concentration of C934P content significantly increased storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G''), and dynamic viscosity (eta'), at 5 degrees C, G'' exceeded G'. At 25 and 37 degrees C, eta' of each formulation depended on the oscillatory frequency. Formulations showed thermoresponsive behavior, existing as a liquid at room temperature and gel at 34-37 degrees C. Increasing the C934P content or temperature significantly increased formulation hardness, compressibility, and adhesiveness. The greatest mucoadhesion was noted in the formulation containing 15% P407 (w/w) and 0.25% C934P (w/w). The work of syringeability values of all formulations were similar and very desirable with regard to ease of administration. The data obtained in these formulations indicate a potentially useful role in the treatment of periodontitis and suggest they are worthy of clinical evaluation.

Abstract
This study was conducted to identify factors associated with periodontal disease in a Jordanian population using principal component and factor analysis techniques. Subjects were 603 dentate patients aged 15-65 years attending dental teaching clinics at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. Their oral hygiene and periodontal status were assessed using plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession, and number of missing teeth. Factor and principal component analysis and binary logistic regression were conducted to identify factors related to periodontal disease. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession, and number of missing teeth were sorted as the same factor and could be combined in one scale to measure the severity of periodontal disease. On the other hand, plaque index and gingival index were sorted as another factor and could be combined in another scale to correlate between oral hygiene and gingival status. The results demonstrated that increased age, low level of education, increased plaque index score, not brushing teeth, smoking more than 15 pack-years, and having diabetes were significantly associated with increased severity of periodontal disease. In conclusion, it was possible to form a standard scale, based on linear combinations of periodontal indices and parameters, to measure the severity of periodontal disease and determine its risk indicators.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The beneficial effects of the one-stage, full-mouth disinfection remain controversial in the scientific literature. This might be due to the fact that an entire mouth disinfection with the use of antiseptics has been confused with a full-mouth scaling and root planing. This parallel, single blind RCT study aimed to compare several full-mouth treatment strategies with each other. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-one patients with moderate periodontitis were randomly allocated to one of the following treatment strategies: scaling and root planing, quadrant by quadrant, at two-week intervals (negative control, NC), full-mouth scaling and root planing within 2 consecutive days (FRP), or three one-stage, full-mouth disinfection (FM) protocols within 2 consecutive days applying antiseptics to all intra-oral niches for periopathogens using as antiseptics: chlorhexidine (FMCHX) for 2 months, amine fluoride/stannous fluoride for 2 months (FMF), or chlorhexidine for 2 months followed by amine fluoride/stannous fluoride for another 6 months (FMCHX+F). At baseline and after 2, 4, and 8 a series of periodontal parameters were recorded. RESULTS All treatment strategies resulted in significant (p<0.05) improvements of all clinical parameters over the entire duration of the study. Inter-treatment differences were often encountered. The NC group nearly always showed significant smaller improvements than the two CHX groups. The differences between the FRP or FM groups, and the two CHX groups only sporadically reached a statistical significance. CONCLUSION These observations indicate that the benefits of the "OSFMD" protocol are partially due to the use of the antiseptics and partially to the completion of the therapy in a short time.

Abstract
Epidemiological investigations support a firm relationship between smoking and periodontal disease. The likely benefits of smoking cessation programmes are considerable for periodontal disease, cancers and nearly all chronic systemic diseases. The mechanisms by which smoking may influence the development and progression of periodontal disease are as yet unclear, but may include changes in the vasculature, the immune and inflammatory systems, tissue oxygenation and the healing processes. Unfortunately, although dental professionals have more opportunities to encourage smokers to quit (most people visit their dentist more frequently than their doctor), dentists claim that they are not well informed on this subject. The purpose of this review is to describe the evidence for a link between smoking and periodontal disease, the possible pathology induced by smoking on the periodontal tissues and its impact on therapy, and to outline the smoking cessation techniques that are currently available.

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory disorders encompassing destructive and nondestructive diseases of the periodontal supporting tissues of teeth. Gingivitis is a nondestructive disease ubiquitous in populations of children and adults globally. Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by severe and rapid loss of periodontal attachment often commencing at or after the circumpubertal age and is more prevalent among Latin Americans and subjects of African descent, and least common among Caucasians. Chronic periodontitis is a common disease and may occur in most age groups, but is most prevalent among adults and seniors world-wide. Approximately 48% of United States adults have chronic periodontitis, and similar or higher rates have been reported in other populations. Moderate and advanced periodontitis is more prevalent among the older age groups, and rates of 70% or more have been reported in certain populations. Chronic and aggressive periodontitis are multifactorial diseases caused primarily by dental plaque microorganisms, and with important modifying effects from other local and systemic factors. The study of the significance of demographic, environmental, and biologic variables is important for risk assessment and the control of periodontal diseases.

Abstract
The comparative in vitro activities of 11 iodonium salt compounds, 0.12% chlorhexidine, and four antimicrobial agents against 322 anaerobic and fastidious potential dental and periodontal bacterial pathogens were studied. Iodonium salts 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10 had in vitro activities comparable to that of chlorhexidine against most isolates. These compounds may be suitable for incorporation into an oral mouthwash.
