Hexagon MXene based heterojunction interface with high ion adsorption and electron transfer efficiency for soft-package potassium-ions aqueous supercapacitors

Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors (PIHC) are considered as ideal large-scale rechargeable energy storage devices due to their low-cost, high-power density and environmental protection. However, a low energy density is the main factor restricting the practical application of PIHC. The interface is formed on the surface of electrode material of PIHC through strong correlation to construct heterojunction, which can significantly improve the performance of ion energy storage. However, how to reveal the influence of the interfacial state of the heterojunction on the adsorption and electron transmission of energy storage ions at the atomic level is still one of the key scientific problems in this field. In this work, metal ion intercalation and microwave-assisted in-situ etching are used to construct the Hexagon MXene Ti3C2 heterojunction with TiOHO strong correlation. At the interface of heterojunction, TiOHO highway for electron transmission is developed to improve the rate performance of PIHC. Through experimental and theoretical calculation, the optimum adsorption position and maximum adsorption amount of potassium-ion at the single interface of heterojunction are obtained, and the specific energy density of PIHC is increased. This lays a foundation for the practical application of high-performance soft-package PIHC.

Superfast, large-scale harvesting of cellulose molecules via ethanol pre-swelling engineering of natural fibers

Cellulose molecules, as the basic unit of biomass cellulose, have demonstrated advancements in versatile engineering and modification of cellulose toward sustainable and promising materials in our low-carbon society. However, harvesting high-quality cellulose molecules from natural cellulosic fibers (CF) remains challenging due to strong hydrogen bonds and unique crystalline structure, which limit solvents (such as ionic liquid, IL) transport and diffusion within CF, making the process energy/time-intensively. Herein, we superfast and sustainably engineer biomass fibers into high-performance cellulose molecules via ethanol pre-swelling of CF followed by IL treatment in the microwave (MW) system. Ethanol-pre-swelled cellulosic fibers (SCF) feature modified morphological and structural distinctions, with improved fiber width, pore size, and specific surface area. The ethanol in the SCF structure is appropriately removed through MW heating and cooling, leaving transport and diffusion pathways of IL within the SCF. Such strategy enables the superfast (140 s) and large-scale (kilogram level) harvesting of cellulose molecules with high molecular weight, resulting in high-performance, versatile cellulose ionogel with a 300 % increase in strength and 1027 % in toughness, monitoring human movement, external pressure, and temperature. Our strategy paves the way for time/energy-effectively, sustainably harvesting high-quality polymer molecules from natural sources beyond cellulose toward versatile and advanced materials.

Evolution of the network structure and voltage loss of anode electrode with the polymeric dispersion in PEM water electrolyzer

Exploring the intrinsic relationship between the network structure and the performance of catalyst layer (CL) by rational design its structure is of paramount importance for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. This study reveals the relative effect of polymeric dispersion evolution on oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and cell voltage loss and linked to CL network structure. The results show that although the dispersed particle size of the ionomer and ink increases with increasing the solubility parameter (δ) difference between the mixed solvent and the ionomer, MeOH-cat (ink from MeOH aqueous solution) has the largest ionomer and ink particle size resulting in the poorest stability, but has comparable OER overpotential to that of IPA-cat (249 mV@10 mA cm-2), which has the smallest dispersed size. While at 100 mA cm-2, the overpotential of the ink rises as the particle size increases, suggesting that the electrode structure becomes more influential as the current density increases. Quantitatively analyzed the electrolyzers' voltage losses and determined that the CL from MeOH-cat has the lowest kinetic overpotential. However, its performance is the worst because of the insufficient network structure of CL, resulting in an output of 1.96 V at 1.5 A cm-2. Comparatively, the CL from IPA-cat has the highest kinetic overpotential yet can achieve the greatest performance of 1.76 V at 2 A cm-2 due to its homogeneous network structure and optimal mass transport. Furthermore, the performance variation becomes more pronounced as current density rises. Hence, this study highlights the significant impact of CL structure on electrolyzer's performance. To improve performance in PEM water electrolysis technology, especially for large work current density, it is crucial to enhance the CL's network structure.

Highly proton-conductive and low swelling polymeric membranes achieved by hydrophilic covalent cross-linking

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) applied in fuel cell technology suffer from the trade-off between fast proton conduction and durable operation involving dimensional stability, mechanical strength, and oxidative resistance. To address this issue, a novel branched polybenzimidazole (brPBI) was synthesized, covalently cross-linked with (3-chloropropyl)triethoxysilane (CTS), and doped with a novel proton conductor FeATMP to prepare brPBI-CTS/FeATMP membranes. The branching degree of brPBI was optimized to achieve high molecular weight while the branching structure offered high free volume, abundant end-groups, and self-cross-linking moiety that enhanced proton conduction and dimensional/mechanical/oxidative stability. Covalent cross-linking with CTS enhanced the dimensional, mechanical, and oxidative stability while improving the water-assisted proton conduction owing to the hydrophilic nature of siloxane structure formed. At 180 ℃, the proton conductivity of the brPBI3-CTS/FeATMP composite membrane reached 0.136, 0.073, and 0.041 S cm-1 at 100 % RH, 50 % RH, and 0 % RH, respectively, while its swelling ratio after immersion in water at 90 ℃ for 24 h was 4.69 %. The performance of the membranes demonstrated that construction of hydrophilic structure by covalent cross-linking was a successful strategy to break the trade-off effect for PEMs.

Tailoring and understanding the lithium storage performance of triple-doped cobalt phosphide composites

Cobalt phosphide (CoP) with high theoretical capacity as well as ceramic-like and metal-like properties is considered as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large volume change and sluggish kinetic response limit its practical application. The optimization of composition, structural control and performance regulation of CoP electrodes can be achieved by the bottom-up assembly technique of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Due to the effective electronic regulation and lithiophilicity brought by the multiple heteroatoms doping and the synergistic effect of the unique structure derived from MOFs, the N, O, P triple-doped carbon and CoP composites (ZCP@NOP) exhibited excellent rate capability (554.61 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1) and cycling stability (806.7 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g-1). The essence and evolution of lithium storage mechanism in CoP electrodes are also confirmed by the ex-situ techniques. The synergistic benefits of heteroatom co-doping carbon and cobalt phosphide, such as the decrease of the diffusion energy barrier of Li-ions and the optimization of electronic structures, are highlighted in theoretical calculations. In conclusion, new thoughts and ideas for the creation of future battery anode are provided by the combination of the N, O, P co-doping and the adaptable structural adjustment technique.

Turning bad into good: A medium-entropy double perovskite oxide with beneficial surface reconstruction for active and robust cathode of solid oxide fuel cells

The cathodes of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) often suffer from detrimental cation segregations and associated impurities poisoning, leading to insufficient electroactivity and poor stability. Here we developed a medium-entropy double perovskite GdBa(Co1.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2)O5-δ (ME-GBCO) for promising SOFC cathode. The increased configuration entropy can effectively tailor the surface composition with in situ formed active BaCoO3-δ (BCO) species, rather than inert and deleterious BaOx segregation on parent GdBaCo2O5-δ (GBCO) surface. Accordingly, the layered ME-GBCO cathode with beneficial surface reconstruction exhibited not only high oxygen reduction activity but excellent durability against CO2 impurity, enabling it a very attractive cathode for intermediate temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs). Our study provides a new idea for development of efficient and durable cathodes via configurational entropy induced rational surface reconstruction.

Manipulating heterointerface to boost formation and desorption of intermediates for highly efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution

Promoting water dissociation and H intermediate desorption play a pivotal role in achieving highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media but remain a great challenge. Herein, we rationally develop a unique W-doped NiSx/Ni heterointerface as a favorable HER electrocatalyst which was directly grown on the Cu nanowire foam substrate (W-NiSx/Ni@Cu) by the electrodeposition strategy. Benefiting from the rational design of the interfaces, the electronic coupling of the W-NiSx/Ni@Cu can be efficiently modulated to lower the HER kinetic barrier. The obtained W-NiSx/Ni@Cu exhibits an enhanced HER activity with a low overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel value of 27.5 mV dec-1, and high stability during HER catalysis. In addition, in-situ Raman spectra reveal that the Ni2+ active sites preferentially adsorb OH intermediate. The theoretical calculation confirms that the water dissociation is accelerated by the construction of W-NiSx/Ni heterointerface and H intermediate desorption can be also promoted by H spillover from S active sites in W-NiSx to Ni active sites in metal Ni. This work offers a valuable reference for rational designing heterointerface of electrocatalysts and provides an available method to accelerate the HER kinetics for the ampere-level current density under low overpotential.

Industrial-Si-based photoanode for highly efficient and stable water splitting

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is an effective and sustainable method for solar energy harvesting. However, the technology is still far away from practical application because of the high cost and low efficiency. Here, we report a low-cost, stable and high-performing industrial-Si-based photoanode (n-Indus-Si/Co-2mA-xs) that is fabricated by simple electrodeposition. Systematic characterizations such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been employed to characterize and understand the working mechanisms of this photoanode. The uniform and adherent dispersion of co-catalyst particles result in high built-in electric field, reduced charge transfer resistance, and abundant active sites. The core-shell structure of co-catalyst particles is formed after the activation process. The reconstructed morphology and modified chemical states of the surface co-catalyst particles improve the separation and transfer of charges, and the reaction kinetics for water oxidation greatly. Our work demonstrates that large-scale PEC water splitting can be achieved by engineering the industrial-Si-based photoelectrode, which shall guide the development of solar energy conversion in the industry.

Enhanced electrochemical nitrate reduction on copper nitride with moderate intermediates adsorption

Nitrate in surface and underground water caused systematic risk to the ecological environment. The electrochemically reduction of nitrate into ammonia (NO3RR), offering a sustainable route for nitrate containing wastewater treatment and ammonia fertilizer conversion. Exploration of catalyst with improved catalytic activity with lower energy barriers is still challenging. Here, we report a copper nitride (Cu3N) catalyst with moderate *NOx and *H2O intermediates adsorptions showed enhanced NO3RR performance. Density functional theory calculations reveals that the unique electronic structure of Cu3N provides efficient active sites for NO3RR, thus enabled balanced adsorption of *NO3 and *H2O (ΔE descriptor), sufficient active hydrogen, and moderate intermediate (*NO3 → HNO3, *NH2→*NH3) adsorption energy. Notably, the in-situ analysis technology revealed potential-driven reconstruction and rehabilitation of Cu3N, forming possible nitrogen vacancy, thus implied for better mechanism understanding. The NO3RR activity of Cu3N surpasses that of most recent catalysts and demonstrates superior stability and implies the application for NH4+ fertilizer recovery, which maintaining an NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 93.1 % and high yield rate of 2.9 mg cm2h-1 at -0.6 V versus RHE. These findings broaden the application scenarios of Cu3N catalyst for ammonia synthesis and provide strategy on improving NO3RR performance.

Advances in the determination of trace amounts of iron cations through electrochemical methods: A comprehensive review of principles and their limits of detection

Quantification of trace amounts of iron is of great importance in various fields. In the industrial sector, it is crucial to monitor the release of iron out of corrosion, pickling treatment, and steel manufacturing to address potential environmental and economic challenges. In biological systems, despite its indispensability, it is essential to maintain iron concentration below a specific threshold. Electrochemical (EC) methods provide significant analytical capabilities due to their simplicity, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness. This review focuses on the fundamental principles of EC methods for iron detection, including potentiometry, amperometry, coulometry, voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It further explains the process of obtaining calibration curves, and subsequently, determining the concentration of unknown ions. Additionally, technical notes are presented on selecting the initial signal value, reducing the duration of tests, excluding non-faradaic signals, and extending the linear region with the lowest detection limit. These notes are supported by key findings from relevant case studies.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of vanadium dioxide/carbon core-shell composite with improved ammonium ion storage for aqueous ammonium-ion battery

Aqueous nonmetallic ion batteries have garnered significant interest due to their cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and inherent safety features. Specifically, ammonium ion (NH4+) as a charge carrier has garnered more and more attention recently. However, one of the persistent challenges is enhancing the electrochemical properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) with a tunnel structure, which serves as a highly efficient NH4+ (de)intercalation host material. Herein, a novel architecture, wherein carbon-coated VO2 nanobelts (VO2@C) with a core-shell structure are engineered to augment NH4+ storage capabilities of VO2. In detail, VO2@C is synthesized via the glucose reduction of vanadium pentoxide under hydrothermal conditions. Experimental results manifest that the introduction of the carbon layer on VO2 nanobelts can enhance mass transfer, ion transport and electrochemical kinetics, thereby culminating in the improved NH4+ storage efficiency. VO2@C core-shell composite exhibits a remarkable specific capacity of ∼300 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g, which is superior to that of VO2 (∼238 mAh/g) and various other electrode materials used for NH4+ storage. The NH4+ storage mechanism can be elucidated by the reversible NH4+ (de)intercalation within the tunnel of VO2, facilitated by the dynamic formation and dissociation of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, when integrated into a full battery with polyaniline (PANI) cathode, the VO2@C//PANI full battery demonstrates robust electrochemical performances, including a specific capacity of ∼185 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 A·g-1, remarkable durability of 93 % retention after 1500 cycles, as well as high energy density of 58 Wh·kg-1 at 5354 W·kg-1. This work provides a pioneering approach to design and explore composite materials for efficient NH4+ storage, offering significant implications for future battery technology enhancements.

Poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]-modified starch-based solid and gel polymer electrolytes for high performance Li-ion batteries

The idea of replacing liquid electrolytes with polymer electrolytes has been successful and the development of these electrolytes has provided acceptable results. With the start of using natural polymers in the polymer industry, as well as starch, these materials can be one of the most important candidates for the polymer matrix in electrolytes. In this study, starch has been investigated as a polymer electrolyte, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PEGMA) is grafted to the starch by radical polymerization, and synthesized copolymers are used as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). Furthermore, by adding N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are produced after swelling in the liquid electrolyte. After characterization, the synthesized polymer electrolytes are investigated in terms of electrochemical properties. The best ionic conductivity of 3.8 × 10-5 S cm-1 is obtained for SPEs whereas it is obtained 4.3 × 10-3 S cm-1 for GPEs at room temperature. The ion transfer number in the range of 0.47-0.91 confirms the compatibility between the electrolytes and electrode. Also, the prepared polymer electrolytes present excellent electrochemical properties, including, a wide electrochemical stability window above 4.7 V, good specific capacities in the range of 170-200 mAh g-1 with a storage capacity of more than 92 %, and Coulombic efficiency of about 98 % after 100 cycles at 0.2 C.

Rational design of dual-ion doped cobalt-free Li-rich cathode materials for enhanced cycle stability of lithium-ion pouch cell batteries

The synergistic effect of single-crystal structure and dual doping in Li-rich cobalt-free cathode materials was thoroughly investigated. Lithium-ion pouch cells employing Sb/Sn doped Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 and graphite exhibited a specific capacity of 191.01 mA h g-1 at 1C rate and exceptionally stable performance upon cycling, with capacity retention of 87.24% of their initial capacity after 250 cycles at 1C rate. The strategic combination of morphology manipulation and dual ion doping has markedly diminished cation mixing and expanded the Li interstitial sites within the cathode lattice. This work offers significant insights into the mechanisms responsible for the structural decline of Li-rich cobalt-free cathodes, emphasizing the importance of stabilizing the cathode lattice structure at high potential. These findings suggest promising potential for this material to meet the demanding energy density criteria for electric vehicles. Finally, this research provides practical strategies for effectively implementing high-voltage cobalt-free cathodes, offering valuable guidance for future applications.

Deciphering the Decomposition Mechanisms of Ether and Fluorinated Ether Electrolytes on Lithium Metal Surfaces: Insights from CMD and AIMD Simulations

The performance of lithium metal batteries can be significantly enhanced by incorporating fluorinated ether-based electrolytes, yet the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation mechanism on lithium metal surfaces remains elusive. This study employs classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the decomposition mechanisms of lithium bis(fluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in 1,2-diethoxyethane (DEE) and its fluorinated analogues, F5DEE and F2DEE, when in contact with lithium metal. Our findings indicate that F5DEE-based electrolytes favor the formation of a FSI-rich primary solvation shell around Li+, while F2DEE-based electrolytes yield a solvent-rich environment. The normalized number density at the Li/electrolyte/Li interface shows a depletion of FSI anions in the electrochemical double layer (EDL) structure near the Li anode upon charging, with the distance between the first main peak of the FSI anion and Li anode following the order F5DEE < DEE < F2DEE. Analysis of the electronic projected density of states and charge transfer dynamics unveils the reductive dissociation pathways of FSI anions and fluorinated DEE solvents on the lithium metal surface, taking into account the influence of the EDL structure. DEE is identified as the most reduction-stable solvent, leading to the selective dissociation of FSI anions and the formation of an entirely inorganic SEI. In contrast, F2DEE displays a pronounced reduction tendency, forming an organic-rich SEI due to the solvent-dominated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital at the interface. F5DEE, competing with FSI anions for reduction, results in the formation of an inorganic-rich hybrid SEI with the highest LiF content. The simulation results correlate well with experimental observations and underscore the pivotal role of various fluorinated functional groups in the formation of EDL and SEI near the lithium metal surface.

Promoted Stability and Reaction Kinetics in Ni-Rich Cathodes via Mechanical Fusing Multifunctional LiZr2(PO4)3 Nanocrystals for High Mass Loading All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Sulfide all-solid-state lithium battery (ASSLB) with nickel-rich layered oxide as the cathode is promising for next-generation energy storage system. However, the Li+ transport dynamic and stability in ASSLB are hindered by the structural mismatches and the instabilities especially at the oxide cathode/sulfide solid electrolyte (SE) interface. In this work, we have demonstrated a simple and highly effective solid-state mechanofusion method (1500 rpm for 10 min) to combine lithium conductive NASICON-type LiZr2(PO4)3 nanocrystals (∼20 nm) uniformly and compactly onto the surface of the single crystallized LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, which can also attractively achieve Zr4+ doping in NCM811 and oxygen vacancies in the LZPO coating without solvent and annealing. Benefiting from the alleviated interface mismatches, sufficient Li+ ion flux through the LZPO coating, promoted structural stabilities for both NCM811 and sulfide SE, strong electronic coupling effect between the LZPO and NCM811, and enlarged (003) d-spacing with enriched Li+ migration channels in NCM811, the obtained LZPO-NCM811 exhibits superior stability (185 mAh/g at 0.1C for 200 cycles) and rate performance (105 mAh/g at 1C for 1300 cycles) with high mass loading of 27 mgNCM/cm2 in sulfide ASSLB. Even with a pronounced 54 mgNCM/cm2, LZPO-NCM811 manifests a high areal capacity of 9.85 mAh/cm2. The convenient and highly effective interface engineering strategy paves the way to large-scale production of various coated cathode materials with synergistic effects for high performance ASSLBs.

Carbon Nanotubes Connecting and Encapsulating MoS2-Doped SnO2 Nanoparticles as an Excellent Lithium Storage Performance Anode Material

Doping and carbon encapsulation modifications have been proven to be effective methods for enhancing the lithium storage performance of batteries. The hydrothermal method and ball milling are commonly used methods for material synthesis. In this study, a composite anode material rich in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conductive tubular network connection and encapsulation of SnO2-MoS2@CNTs (SMC) was synthesized by combining these two methods. In this highly conductive network, nano-SnO2 particles are uniformly dispersed and embedded in MoS2 with a layered structure, and the obtained SnO2-MoS2 composite material is tightly connected and encapsulated by the tubular network of CNTs. It is worth noting that the incorporation of layered MoS2 not only effectively anchors the SnO2 nanoparticles, but also provides a broader space for lithium-ion movement due to the larger interlayer spacing. The conductive network of CNTs shortens the diffusion path of electrons and Li+ and provides more diffusion channels. The reversible capacity of the SnO2-MoS2@CNTs nanocomposite material remains at 1069.3 mA h g-1 after 320 cycles at 0.2 A g-1, and it exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability, maintaining 904.5 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. The composite material demonstrates excellent pseudocapacitive contribution rate performance, with a contribution rate of 87% at 2.0 mV s-1. The results indicate that SnO2-MoS2@CNTs has excellent electrochemical lithium storage performance and is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Self-Driving Laboratories for Chemistry and Materials Science

Self-driving laboratories (SDLs) promise an accelerated application of the scientific method. Through the automation of experimental workflows, along with autonomous experimental planning, SDLs hold the potential to greatly accelerate research in chemistry and materials discovery. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art in SDL technology, its applications across various scientific disciplines, and the potential implications for research and industry. This review additionally provides an overview of the enabling technologies for SDLs, including their hardware, software, and integration with laboratory infrastructure. Most importantly, this review explores the diverse range of scientific domains where SDLs have made significant contributions, from drug discovery and materials science to genomics and chemistry. We provide a comprehensive review of existing real-world examples of SDLs, their different levels of automation, and the challenges and limitations associated with each domain.

Enhancing Rapid Li+/Na+ Storage Performance via Interface Engineering of Reduced Graphene Oxide-Wrapped Bimetallic Sulfide Nanocages

Transition-metal sulfide is considered to be an admirable transformational electrode material due to low cost, large specific capacity, and good reversibility in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, the reduced graphene oxide-wrapped open bimetallic sulfide (NiS2-Co3S4@rGO) nanocage, derived from nickel-cobalt Prussian blue, was obtained by two-step calcination. There are luxuriant pore structures in the nanocage composite with a specific surface area of 85.28 m2 g-1, which provides plentiful paths for rapid transmission of Li+/Na+ and alleviates the volume stress caused by insertion and extraction of alkali metal ions. The excellent interface combination of bimetallic sulfide wrapped in reduced graphene oxide improves the conductivity and overall performance of the battery. Thanks to the special interface engineering, the open NiS2-Co3S4@rGO nanocage composite displays rapid lithium storage properties with an average diffusion coefficient of 8.5 × 10-13 cm2 s-1. Moreover, after 300 cycles, the reversible capacity of the composite is 1113.2 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1. In SIBs, the capacity of the open NiS2-Co3S4@rGO composite is 487.9 mAh g-1 when the current density is 5 A g-1. These preeminent performances demonstrate the enormous development prospects of bimetallic sulfide nanocage as anode material in LIBs and SIBs.

Tuning Ceramic Surface to Minimize the Ionic Resistance at the Interface between PEO- and LATP-Based Ceramic Electrolyte

New battery technologies are currently under development, and among them, all-solid-state batteries should deliver better electrochemical performance and enhanced safety. Composite solid electrolytes, combining a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and a ceramic electrolyte (CE), should then provide high ionic conductivity coupled to high mechanical stability. To date, this synergy has not yet been reached due to the complexity of the Li-ion transport within the hybrid solid electrolyte, especially at the SPE/CE interface currently considered the limiting step. Yet, there is no proper kinetic model to elucidate the parameters influencing this interfacial barrier. The limited understanding of the SPE/CE interface can be partly explained by scattered SPE/CE interface resistances reported in the literature as well as the lack of systematic studies. Herein, we propose a systematic study of the effect on the SPE/CE interfacial resistance of chemical and thermal treatments of a model LATP-based ceramic based on a methodology relying on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The results provide different levers for the optimization of this interface and valuable insights into experimental precautions needed to obtain more reproducible results.

Enhancing CO2 electroreduction to ethylene via microenvironment regulation in boron-imidazolate frameworks

Using the structure-induced effect of KBH(mim)3 ligand, four 2-dimensional (2D) boron imidazolate frameworks with identical body framework and different dangling monocarboxylate ligands, have been synthesized. Electrocatalytic results indicate that the surrounding microenvironment regulation could effectively affect the activity and selectivity towards C2H4. BIF-151 showed the highest electrocatalytic performances with the Faraday efficiency (FE) of 25.94% for C2H4 at -1.4 V vs. RHE.

Coating Robust Layers on Ni-Rich Cathode Active Materials while Suppressing Cation Mixing for All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

This study focused on addressing the challenges associated with the incompatibility between sulfide solid electrolytes and Ni-rich cathode active materials (CAMs) in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. To resolve these issues, protective layers have been explored for Ni-rich materials. Lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO), a perovskite-type material, is recognized for its excellent chemical stability and ionic conductivity, which render it a potential protective layer in CAMs. However, traditional methods of achieving the perovskite structure involve temperatures exceeding 700 °C, resulting in challenges such as LLTO agglomeration, secondary phase formation between LLTO and CAM, and cation mixing within the CAM. In this study, a rapid technique known as flash-light sintering (FLS) was employed to fabricate a uniform and pure perovskite protective layer without inducing cation mixing within the CAM. The LLTO-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) with FLS treatment demonstrated minimal cation mixing and formed a fully covered dense layer. This resulted in a high initial capacity and effectively addressed the incompatibility issues between the sulfide electrolytes and CAM. The rapid FLS method not only streamlines the fabrication of LLTO-coated NCM811 but also provides opportunities for its broader application to materials that were previously deemed impractical because of high sintering temperatures.

Lithium-Rich Porous Aromatic Framework Doped Quasi-Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium Battery with High Cycling Stability

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have revolutionized the energy storage landscape and are the preferred power source for various applications, ranging from portable electronics to electric vehicles. The constant drive and growth in battery research and development aim to enhance their performance, energy density, and safety. Advanced lithium batteries (LIBs) are considered to be the most promising electrochemical storage devices, which can provide high specific energy, volumetric energy density, and power density. However, the trade-off between ionic conductivity and cycling stability is still a major contradiction for SPEs. In this work, a novel hydroxylated PAF-1 was designed and synthesized through post-modification, and the lithium-rich single-ion porous aromatic framework PAF-1-OLi was thereafter prepared by lithiation, achieved with a specific surface area to be 155 m2 g-1 and a lithium content of 2.01 mmol g-1. PAF-1-OLi, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfony)limine (LiTFSI), and poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) were compounded to obtain PAF-1-OLi/PVDF by solution casting, which had good mechanical, thermodynamic, and electrochemical properties. The ion conductivity of PAF-1-OLi/PVDF infiltrated with plasticizer was 2.93 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C. The tLi+ was 0.77, which was much higher than that of the traditional dual-ion polymer electrolytes. The electrochemical window of PAF-1-OLi/PVDF can reach 4.9 V. The Li//PAF-1-OLi/PVDF//LiFePO4 battery initial discharge specific capacity was 147 mAh g-1 and reached 134.9 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles with a capacity retention rate of 91.2%, demonstrating its good cycling stability. The anionic part of lithium salt was fixed on the framework of PAF-1 to increase the Li+ transfer number of PAF-1-OLi/PVDF. The lithium-rich PAF-1-OLi and the LiTFSI provided abundant Li+ sources to transfer, while PAF-1-OLi helped to form a continuous Li+ transport channel, effectively promoting the migration of Li+ in the PAF-1-OLi/PVDF and effectively improving the Li+ conductivity. This study afforded a novel polymer electrolyte based on lithium-rich PAF-1-OLi, which has excellent electrochemical performance, providing a new choice for the polymer electrolyte of lithium batteries.

Tuning the product selectivity of single-atom catalysts for CO2 reduction beyond CO formation by orbital engineering

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is one of the promising strategies for developing sustainable energy resources. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as efficient catalysts for CO2R. However, the efficiency of SACs for the formation of reduction products beyond two-step CO formation is low due to the lower binding strength of the CO intermediate. In this study, we present an orbital engineering strategy based on density functional theory calculations and the fragment molecular orbital approach to tune product selectivity for the CO2R reaction on macrocycle based molecular catalysts (porphyrin and phthalocyanine) and extended SACs (graphene and covalent organic frameworks) with Fe, Co, and Ni dopants. The introduction of neutral axial ligands such as imidazole, pyridine, and trimethyl phosphine to the metal dopants enhances the binding affinity of the CO intermediate. The stability of the catalysts is investigated through the thermodynamic binding energy of the axial ligands and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD). The grand canonical potential method is used to determine the reaction free energy values. Using a unified activity volcano plot based on the reaction free energy values, we investigated the catalytic activity and product selectivity at an applied potential of -0.8 V vs. SHE and a pH of 6.8. We found that with the imidazole and pyridine axial ligands, the selectivity of Fe-doped SACs towards the formation of the methanol product is improved. The activity volcano plot for these SACs shows a similar activity to that of the Cu (211) surface. The catalytic activity is found to be directly proportional to the sigma-donating ability of the axial ligands.

A Rocking-chair Rechargeable Seawater Battery

Seawater batteries are attracting continuous attention because seawater as an electrolyte is inexhaustible, eco-friendly, and free of charge. However, the rechargeable seawater batteries developed nowadays show poor reversibility and short cycle life, due to the very limited electrode materials and complicated yet inappropriate working mechanism. Here, we propose a rechargeable seawater battery that works through a rocking-chair mechanism encountered in commercial lithium ion batteries, enabled by intercalation-type inorganic electrode materials of open-framework-type cathode and Na-ion conducting membrane-type anode. The rechargeable seawater battery achieves a high specific energy of 80.0 Wh/kg at 1,226.9 W/kg and a high specific power of 7,495.0 W/kg at 23.7 Wh/kg. Additionally, it exhibits excellent cycling stability, retaining 66.3% of its capacity over 1,000 cycles. This work represents a promising avenue for developing sustainable aqueous batteries with low costs.

Regulating the Pore Structure of Biomass-Derived Hard Carbon for an Advanced Sodium-Ion Battery

Biomass-derived hard carbon materials are attractive for sodium-ion batteries due to their abundance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. However, their widespread use is hindered by their limited specific capacity. Herein, a type of bamboo-derived hard carbon with adjustable pore structures is developed by employing a ball milling technique to modify the carbon chain length in the precursor. It is observed that the length of the carbon chain in the precursor can effectively control the rearrangement behavior of the carbon layers during the high-temperature carbonization process, resulting in diverse pore structures ranging from closed pores to open pores, which significantly impact the electrochemical properties. The optimized hard carbon with abundant closed pores exhibits a high specific capacity of 356 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1, surpassing that of bare hard carbon (243 mAh g-1) and hard carbon with abundant open pores (129 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1). However, the kinetic analysis reveals that hard carbon with open pores shows better sodium-ion diffusion kinetics, indicating that a balance between the closed and open pores should be considered. This research offers valuable insights into pore design and presents a promising approach for enhancing the performance of hard carbon anode materials derived from biomass precursors.

Engineering VOx structure by integrating oxygen vacancies for improved zinc-ion storage based on cation-doping regulation with electric density

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted enormous attention for future energy-storage devices owing to their high theoretical capacity and environmental friendliness. However, obtaining cathodes with a high specific capacity and fast reaction kinetics remains a huge challenge. Herein, Cu-VOx material with a thin sheet microsphere structure composed of nanoparticles was prepared by a simple hydrothermal reaction, which improved reaction kinetics and specific capacity. Pre-embedding Cu2+ into V2O5 to introduce abundant oxygen vacancies extended the interlayer distance to 1.16 nm, weakened the effect of the V-O bonds, and improved the electrical conductivity and structural stability. At the same time, the influence of different valence metal ions (M = K+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Sn4+, Nb5+, and W6+) pre-embedded in V2O5 was studied. Benefiting from a large interlayer spacing, high electrical conductivity, and excellent structural stability, the Cu-VOx electrode demonstrated a high specific capacity of 455.9 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. Importantly, when the current density was increased to 6 A g-1, the Cu-VOx electrode still achieved a high specific capacity of 178.8 mA h g-1 and maintained a high capacity retention of 76.5% over 2000 cycles.

Non-Noble-Metal-Based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a pivotal role in diverse renewable energy storage and conversion technologies, including water electrolysis, electrochemical CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, and metal-air batteries. Among various water electrolysis techniques, proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based water electrolysis devices offer numerous advantages, including high current densities, exceptional chemical stability, excellent proton conductivity, and high-purity H2. Nevertheless, the prohibitive cost associated with Ir/Ru-based OER electrocatalysts poses a significant barrier to the broad-scale application of PEM-based water splitting. Consequently, it is crucial to advance the development of non-noble metal OER catalysis substance with high acid-activity and stability, thereby fostering their widespread integration into PEM water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). In this review, a comprehensive analysis of the acidic OER mechanism, encompassing the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and oxide path mechanism (OPM) is offered. Subsequently, a systematic summary of recently reported noble-metal-free catalysts including transition metal-based, carbon-based and other types of catalysts is provided. Additionally, a comprehensive compilation of in situ/operando characterization techniques is provided, serving as invaluable tools for furnishing experimental evidence to comprehend the catalytic mechanism. Finally, the present challenges and future research directions concerning precious-metal-free acidic OER are comprehensively summarized and discussed in this review.

Pd-Ru pair on Pt surface for promoting hydrogen oxidation and evolution in alkaline media

Hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline media is critical for alkaline fuel cells and electrochemical ammonia compressors. The slow hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline electrolytes requires large amounts of scarce and expensive platinum catalysts. While transition metal decoration can enhance Pt catalysts' activity, it often reduces the electrochemical active surface area, limiting the improvement in Pt mass activity. Here, we enhance Pt catalysts' activity without losing surface-active sites by using a Pd-Ru pair. Utilizing a mildly catalytic thermal pyrolysis approach, Pd-Ru pairs are decorated on Pt, confirmed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. Density functional theory and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations indicate preferred Pd and Ru dopant adsorption. The Pd-Ru decorated Pt catalyst exhibits a mass-based exchange current density of 1557 ± 85 A g-1metal for hydrogen oxidation reaction, demonstrating superior performance in an ammonia compressor.

Hexagonal Mg2B2 and Ca2B2 monolayers as promising anode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries

Exploring new high-performance anode materials is of great significance for next generation renewable energy technologies. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal borides, named as MBenes, are receiving increasing attention in energy storage fields due to their structure-and-composition diversities and high electrical conductivities. Expanding the family of hexagonal MBenes to non-transition metal borides, we report two hexagonal IIA metal M2B2-typed MBenes and demonstrate the feasibility of exfoliation and application as anode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and Na-ion batteries (SIBs) using ab initio calculations. The predicted 2D Mg2B2 and Ca2B2 monolayers exhibit robust thermal and mechanical stabilities, inherent metallic properties, electrical conductivities, and excellent electrode performance. The outstanding theoretical specific capacities of Mg2B2 and Ca2B2 for Li/Na ions reach up to 764/527 and 859/527 mA h g-1, respectively. Furthermore, the average open-circuit voltages (OCVs) of Mg2B2 and Ca2B2 range from 0.275 to 0.395 V, indicating their suitability for anode materials. Additionally, the low diffusion energy barriers of Mg2B2 and Ca2B2 for Li/Na ions at delithiated/desodiated states (27/14 and 16/12 meV) and lithiated/sodiated states (187/58 and 52/34 meV) illustrate their excellent charge-discharge capabilities. These intriguing findings demonstrate the superior performance of the predicted IIA metal boride monolayers as promising anode materials for LIBs and SIBs and break through the limitations of transition metal MBenes as anode materials in terms of overall performance. Our study opens the door to the application of the main group metal MBenes in ion energy storage.

Theoretical calculations and simulations power the design of inorganic solid-state electrolytes

Using solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) to build batteries helps improve the safety and lifespan of batteries, making it crucial to deeply understand the fundamental physical and chemical properties of SSEs. Theoretical calculations based on modern quantum chemical methods and molecular simulation techniques can explore the relationship between the structure and performance of SSEs at the atomic and molecular levels. In this review, we first comprehensively introduce theoretical methods used to assess the stability of SSEs, including mechanical, phase, and electrochemical stability, and summarize the significant progress achieved through these methods. Next, we outline the methods for calculating ion diffusion properties and discuss the advantages and limitations of these methods by combining the diffusion behaviors and mechanisms of ions in the bulk phase, grain boundaries, and electrode-solid electrolyte interfaces. Finally, we summarize the latest research progress in the discovery of high-quality SSEs through high-throughput screening and machine learning and discuss the application prospects of a new mode that incorporates machine learning into high-throughput screening.

Platinum monolayer dispersed on MXenes for electrocatalyzed hydrogen evolution: a first-principles study

Maximizing platinum's atomic utilization and understanding the anchoring mechanism between platinum moieties and their supports are crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Using density functional theory, we investigate the catalyst of a Pt monolayer on the two-dimensional Mo2TiC2 substrate (PtML/Mo2TiC2) for the reaction. This Pt monolayer shows a Pt(111)-like pattern, with its Pt-Pt bond elongated by about 0.1 Å compared to Pt(111); charge transfer from Mo2TiC2 to the Pt monolayer leads to significant charge accumulation on Pt. This substantial monolayer metal-support interaction optimizes hydrogen adsorption toward optimal HER activity under both constant charge and potential conditions, making PtML/Mo2TiC2 a promising HER catalyst. Detailed studies reveal that the dominant Volmer-Tafel mechanism in the HER occurs on the 1 monolayer hydrogen-covered PtML/Mo2TiC2 surface. The surface Pourbaix diagram identifies this as the stable surface termination under the electrochemical reaction conditions. These findings provide insights into designing stable, efficient, and low platinum-loaded HER catalysts.

Research progress of functional MXene in inhibiting lithium/zinc metal battery dendrites

The layered two-dimensional (2D) MXene has great promise for applications in supercapacitors, batteries, and electrocatalysis due to its large layer spacing, excellent electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, good hydrophilicity, and adjustable layer spacing. Since its discovery in 2011, MXene has been widely used to inhibit the growth of anode dendrites of lithium metal. In the past two years, researchers have used MXene and MXene based materials in the anodes of zinc metal batteries and zinc ion hybrid capacitors, respectively, and made a series of important progressive steps in the inhibition of zinc dendrite growth. In this review, we summarize the research progress of functional MXenes in inhibiting the growth of lithium and zinc metal anode dendrites, and provide a brief overview and outlook on the current challenges of MXene materials, which will help researchers to further understand the methods and their mechanisms, thus to develop novel electrochemical energy storage systems to meet the needs of rapidly developing electric vehicles and wearable/portable electronics.

Achieving Superior Cyclability Pouch Cells with Oxygen Vacancy-Moderated P'2/P3 Hybrid Layered Sodium Cathode Materials

Layered P2-type sodium manganese oxide has emerged as a promising cathode candidate for sodium-ion batteries due to its appealing cost-effectiveness and high discharge voltage. However, its practical capacity within the voltage range of 2.0-4.0 V (vs Na+/Na) is relatively low, and its rate capability is hampered by the adverse charge/vacancy ordering during charge/discharge. In this study, a layered P'2/P3 mixed-phase Na0.8-aMn0.675Ni0.225Li0.1O2-x cathode with high (003) crystal plane intensity was designed by introducing oxygen vacancies to P2-structured materials. Aided by these advantages, the hybrid cathode material demonstrates impressive structural and thermal stability and faster Na-ion diffusion kinetics compared to a regular P2 material. Half-cell shows an initial discharge capacity retention of 101 mA h/g at 12 mA/g and 92.25% retention after 500 cycles at 120 mA/g. In combination with a hard carbon anode, the 0.5 A h pouch cell achieved a prevailing capacity retention of 95.2% after 2600 cycles at 36 mA/g. This work opens new dimensions for layered cathode materials with the aim of achieving superior cyclabilities.

Novel Insight into the Synergistic Mechanism for Pd and Rh Promoting the Hydro-Defluorination of 4-Fluorophenol over Bimetallic Rh-Pd/C Catalysts

This study explores the synergistic effect between the Rh and Pd of bimetallic Rh-Pd/C catalysts for the catalytic hydro-defluorination (HDF) of 4-fluorophenol (4-FP). It was found that 4-FP could not be efficiently hydro-defluorinated over 6% Pd/C and 6% Rh/C due to the inherent properties of Pd and Rh species in the dissociation of H2 and the activation of C-F bonds. Compared with 6% Pd/C and 6% Rh/C, bimetallic Rh-Pd/C catalysts, especially 1% Rh-5% Pd/C, exhibited much higher catalytic activity in the HDF of 4-FP, suggesting that the synergistic effect between the Rh and Pd of the catalyst was much more positive. Catalyst characterizations (BET, XRD, TEM, and XPS) were introduced to clarify the mechanism for the synergistic effect between the Rh and Pd of the catalyst in the HDF reaction and revealed that it was mainly attributed to the bifunctional mechanism: Pd species were favorable for the dissociation of H2, and Rh species were beneficial to the activation of C-F bonds in the HDF reaction. Meanwhile, the interaction between Rh and Pd species enabled Rh and Pd to exhibit a more positive synergistic effect, which promoted the migration of atomic H* from Pd to Rh species and thus enhanced the HDF of 4-FP. Furthermore, 1% Rh-5% Pd/C prepared using 20-40 equiv NaBH4 exhibited the best performance in the catalytic HDF of 4-FP. Catalysis characterizations suggested that appropriate Rh3+/Rh0 and Pd2+/Pd0 ratios were beneficial to the dissociation of H2 and the activation of C-F bonds, which caused the more positive synergistic effect between the Rh and Pd of Rh-Pd/C in the HDF reaction. This work offers a valuable strategy for enhancing the performance of catalytic HDF catalysts via promoting synergistic effects.

A Simple Method for the Study of Heteroionic Interface Impedances in Solid Electrolyte Multilayer Cells Containing LLZO

Hybrid battery cells that combine a garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte with other solid, polymer or liquid electrolytes are increasingly investigated. In such cells with layered electrolytes, ensuring a low-resistive heteroionic interface between neighboring electrolytes is crucial for preventing major additional overpotentials during operation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is frequently used to extract such parameters, usually on multilayer symmetrical model cells that contain the different electrolytes stacked in series. Unfortunately, the impedance contributions of the heteroionic interfaces often overlap with those of the electrolyte|electrode interfaces, necessitating the use of sophisticated four-point cells that probe the electrochemical potential away from the polarization source. In this work, an alternative solution to this problem is demonstrated by taking advantage of the inherent fast charge transfer kinetics of LLZO with its parent metal electrode. The "resistance-free" nature of a reversible Li|LLZO interface enables a precise evaluation of the heteroionic interface impedance in symmetric two-point cells of the type Li|LLZO|electrolyte|LLZO|Li with negligible electrode contribution. This is exemplified for symmetric multilayer cells containing tantalum-doped LLZO and a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based dry polymer electrolyte. Validation and comparison of impedance data with results from symmetric four-point cells and two-point cells with ion-blocking electrodes demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method. Overall, this study presents a simple and reliable method for studying heteroionic interface impedances in LLZO-containing multilayer cells.

Polar groups promoting in-situ polymerization phase separation for solid electrolytes enabling solid-state lithium batteries

Plastic-crystal-embedded elastomer electrolytes (PCEEs), produced through polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS), are gaining popularity as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). However, it remains to be investigated whether all monomer molecules can achieve polymerization-induced phase separation and the corresponding differences in lithium metal battery performance. Herein, we prepared PCEEs with different functional groups (OH, CN, F) through in situ polymerization. Research findings show that PCEE containing - CN or - F achieves the separation of the plastic crystalline phase and succinonitrile (SN) phase, whereas PCEE containing OH cannot due to hydrogen bonding with the SN phase. Notably, the PCEE synthesized with the F monomer (FBA-PCEE) exhibited exceptional interfacial stability with lithium metal anodes and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes, due to its unique coordination mechanism with lithium ions. The FBA-PCEE demonstrated a high ionic conductivity (2.02 × 10-3 S cm-1) and lithium-ion migration number ( [Formula: see text]  = 0.75). Moreover, lithium symmetric cells incorporating FBA-PCEE demonstrated stable cycling performance for more than 1000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2, resulting in the development of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) rich in LiF, Li3N, and Li2CO3 over time. Additionally, incorporating FBA-PCEE facilitated the stable cycling of LPF over 1000 cycles at 0.5C, maintaining a capacity retention of 77.38 % after 500 cycles. When coupled with high-voltage Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide (NCM-622) cathodes and lithium metal anodes, a discharge capacity of 119.70 mAh g-1 at 0.1C was sustained after 100 cycles, exhibiting a capacity retention of 78.95 %. This study elucidates the critical role of monomer design in achieving PIPS, offering valuable insights into developing high-performance polymer composite electrolytes for advanced lithium metal batteries.

Promoting Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reactions Using Advanced Heterostructures for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery Applications

In order to facilitate electrochemical oxygen reactions in electrically rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs), there is a need to develop innovative approaches for efficient oxygen electrocatalysts. Due to their reliability, high energy density, material abundance, and ecofriendliness, rechargeable ZABs hold promise as next-generation energy storage and conversion devices. However, the large-scale application of ZABs is currently hindered by the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the development of heterostructure-based electrocatalysts has the potential to surpass the limitations imposed by the intrinsic properties of a single material. This Account begins with an explanation of the configurations of ZABs and the fundamentals of the oxygen electrochemistry of the air electrode. Then, we summarize recent progress with respect to the variety of heterostructures that exploit bifunctional electrocatalytic reactions and overview their impact on ZAB performance. The range of heterointerfacial engineering strategies for improving the ORR/OER and ZAB performance includes tailoring the surface chemistry, dimensionality of catalysts, interfacial charge transfer, mass and charge transport, and morphology. We highlight the multicomponent design approaches that take these features into account to create advanced highly active bifunctional catalysts. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives on this important topic that aim to enhance the bifunctional activity and performance of zinc-air batteries.

The promise of chiral electrocatalysis for efficient and sustainable energy conversion and storage: a comprehensive review of the CISS effect and future directions

The integration of chirality, specifically through the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, into electrocatalytic processes represents a pioneering approach for enhancing the efficiency of energy conversion and storage systems. This review delves into the burgeoning field of chiral electrocatalysis, elucidating the fundamental principles, historical development, theoretical underpinnings, and practical applications of the CISS effect across a spectrum of electrocatalytic reactions, including the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We explore the methodological advancements in inducing the CISS effect through structural and surface engineering and discuss various techniques for its measurement, from magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM) to hydrogen peroxide titration. Furthermore, this review highlights the transformative potential of the CISS effect in addressing the key challenges of the NRR and CO2RR processes and in mitigating singlet oxygen formation in metal-air batteries, thereby improving their performance and durability. Through this comprehensive overview, we aim to underscore the significant role of incorporating chirality and spin polarization in advancing electrocatalytic technologies for sustainable energy applications.

Stable, while Still Active? A DFT Study of Cu, Ag, and Au Single Atoms at the C3N4/TiO2 Interface

Hybrid DFT calculations are employed to compare the adsorption and stabilization of Cu, Ag, and Au atoms on graphitic C3N4 and on the heterojunction formed by g- C3N4 and TiO2. While Cu and Ag can be strongly chemisorbed in form of cations on g- C3N4, Au is only weakly physisorbed. On g- C3N4/TiO2, all coinage metal adatoms can be strongly chemisorbed, but, while Cu and Ag forms cations, Au form an Au- species. Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics simulations confirm that the metal adatoms on g-C3N4 are highly mobile at room temperature, while they remain confined in the interfacial spacing between C3N4 and TiO2 on the heterojunction, being both stably bound and reachable for the reactants in a catalytic cycle. Doping g- C3N4/TiO2 with metal single atoms permits thus to generate catalytic systems with tunable charge and chemical properties and improved stability with respect to bare C3N4. Moreover, the changes in the electronic structure of g- C3N4/TiO2 induced by the presence of the metal single atoms are beneficial also for photocatalytic applications.

Template-Assisted Epitaxial Growth of Ordered SnO2 Nanorods Arrays with Different Hollow Structures for High-Performance Sodium Storage

Anode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are confronted with severe volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity. Construction of assembled structures featuring hollow interior and carbon material modification is considered as an efficient strategy to address the issues. Herein, a novel template-assisted epitaxial growth method, ingeniously exploiting lattice matching nature, is developed to fabricate hollow ordered architectures assembled by SnO2 nanorods. SnO2 nanorods growing along [100] direction can achieve lattice-matched epitaxial growth on (110) plane of α-Fe2O3. Driven by the lattice matching, different α-Fe2O3 templates possessing different crystal plane orientations enable distinct assembly modes of SnO2, and four kinds of hollow ordered SnO2@C nanorods arrays (HONAs) with different morphologies including disc, hexahedron, dodecahedron and tetrakaidecahedron (denoted as Di-, He-, Do-, and Te-SnO2@C) are achieved. Benefiting from the synergy of hollow structure, carbon coating and ordered assembly structure, good structural integrity and stability and enhanced electrical conductivity are realized, resulting in impressive sodium storage performances when utilized as SIB anodes. Specifically, Te-SnO2@C HONAs exhibit excellent rate capability (385.6 mAh·g-1 at 2.0 A·g-1) and remarkable cycling stability (355.4 mAh·g-1 after 2000 cycles at 1.0 A·g-1). This work provides a promising route for constructing advanced SIB anode materials through epitaxial growth for rational structural design.

A Strategy to Mitigate Jahn Teller Effect of Mn-Rich NASICON Framework for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Mn-based sodium superionic conductors have driven attention to the low-cost advanced cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, low-rate capability and unsatisfactory cyclic performance due to the Jahn teller effect of Mn3+ redox couple which occurs from the change in Mn-O bond length at the octahedral site of crystal structure during charge-discharge, eventually limiting their application. Herein, a disordered and sodium deficient NASICON Na4-xMn(FeVCrTi)0.25(PO4)3 (termed as Na4-xMn(HE)) is synthesized to mitigate this Jahn teller effect to achieve high rate and ultrastable cathode material. Interestingly, the as-prepared Na3.5Mn(HE) shows five reversible electron reactions (i.e., Ti3+/Ti4+, Fe2+/Fe3+, V3+/V4+, Mn2+/Mn3+, and Mn3+/Mn4+) and demonstrates 141 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C with 80% capacity retention at 1 C after 500 cycles which is far superior to its counterparts binary Mn-based materials. The excellent cyclic performance is due to the remediation of the Jahn teller effect in sodium-deficient entropy-stabilized material. The structural reversibility, enhanced kinetics, and electronic properties are further studied in detail by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and first principal calculations. Na3.5Mn(HE)//HC full cell delivered 89.7 mAh g-1 capacity at 0.2 C. This work sheds light on designing Mn-based cathodes with superior electrochemical performance for wide energy storage applications.

Interfacial modulation strategy using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ultrathin two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanosheets for wearable supercapacitors: Solution engineering

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) hold great promise as electrochemically active materials. However, their application in MOF nanocomposite electrodes in solution engineering is limited by structural self-stacking and imperfect conductive pathways. In this study, we used meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (TCPP) with off-domain π-bonds to reconstitute Zn-TCPP (ZMOF) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) through an interfacial modulation strategy involving electrostatic coupling and hydrogen bonding, creating a conductive composite with a nanosheet structure. The negatively charged PSS and ZMOF formed a three-dimensional interconnected conductive network with excellent interfaces. The positively charged PEDOT, fine tuned with the lamellar structure, established strong π-π stacking interactions between the porphyrin and thiophene rings. ZMOF also induced changes in the PEDOT chain structure, weakening PSS entanglement and enhancing charge-transport properties. The specific capacitance of the prepared supercapacitor was as high as 967.8 F g-1. Flexible supercapacitors produced on a large scale using dispensing printing technology exhibited an energy density of 1.85 μWh cm-2 and a power density of 7.08 μW cm-2. This interfacial modulation strategy also exhibited excellent wearable properties, with 96 % capacitance retention at a 180° bending angle and stable cycling performance. This study presented a significant advancement in the functionalization of 2D materials, highlighting their potential for device-grade capacitive architectures.

First-principles calculations to investigate the impact of fluorine doping on electrochemical properties of Li-rich Li2MnO3 layered cathode materials

Li-rich layered oxides are promising candidates for high-capacity Li-ion battery cathode materials. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the effect of F doping on Li-rich Li2MnO3 layered cathode materials. Our findings reveal that both Li2MnO3 and Li2MnO2.75F0.25 exhibit significant volume changes (greater than 10%) during deep delithiation, which could hinder the cycling of more Li ions from these two materials. For Li2MnO3, it is observed that oxygen ions lose electrons to compensate for charge during the delithiation process, leading to a relatively high voltage plateau. After F doping, oxidation occurs in both the cationic (Mn) and anionic (O) components, resulting in a lower voltage plateau at the beginning of the charge, which can be attributed to the oxidation of Mn3+ to Mn4+. Additionally, F doping can somewhat suppress the release of oxygen in Li2MnO3, improving the stability of anionic oxidation. However, the increase of the activation barriers for Li diffusion can be observed after F doping, due to stronger electrostatic interactions between F- and Li+, which adversely affects the cycling kinetics of Li2MnO2.75F0.25. This study enhances our understanding of the impact of F doping in Li2MnO3 based on theoretical calculations.

Transition metal oxide clusters: advanced electrocatalysts for a sustainable energy future

The comprehensive utilization of sustainable green energy is essential to face the global energy and environmental crisis. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrocatalytic urea synthesis (EUS) are the pivotal electrocatalytic processes, necessitating the development of low-cost electrocatalysts with high efficiency. Small-sized transition metal oxide (TMO) clusters have attracted a lot of attention because of their exceptional qualities, such as exhibiting a dense array of low-coordinated metal active sites (e.g. abundant metal cation defects and oxygen vacancy), amorphous structures with high surface energy, high atom utilization efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the synergistic actions between metal clusters and TM-Nx single atom active sites remarkably boost up the electrocatalytic performances, corroborated by density functional theory (DFT). More efforts in this comprehensive feature article are expected to achieve insights into the fundamental understanding of electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms in our lab and serve as a guide for creating cutting-edge electrocatalysts of transition metal oxide clusters.

Efficient state of charge estimation of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles using evolutionary intelligence-assisted GLA-CNN-Bi-LSTM deep learning model

The battery's performance heavily influences the safety, dependability, and operational efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs). This paper introduces an innovative hybrid deep learning architecture that dramatically enhances the estimation of the state of charge (SoC) of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, crucial for efficient EV operation. Our model uniquely integrates a convolutional neural network (CNN) with bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM), optimized through evolutionary intelligence, enabling an advanced level of precision in SoC estimation. A novel aspect of this work is the application of the Group Learning Algorithm (GLA) to tune the hyperparameters of the CNN-Bi-LSTM network meticulously. This approach not only refines the model's accuracy but also significantly enhances its efficiency by optimizing each parameter to best capture and integrate both spatial and temporal information from the battery data. This is in stark contrast to conventional models that typically focus on either spatial or temporal data, but not both effectively. The model's robustness is further demonstrated through its training across six diverse datasets that represent a range of EV discharge profiles, including the Highway Fuel Economy Test (HWFET), the US06 test, the Beijing Dynamic Stress Test (BJDST), the dynamic stress test (DST), the federal urban driving schedule (FUDS), and the urban development driving schedule (UDDS). These tests are crucial for ensuring that the model can perform under various real-world conditions. Experimentally, our hybrid model not only surpasses the performance of existing LSTM and CNN frameworks in tracking SoC estimation but also achieves an impressively quick convergence to true SoC values, maintaining an average root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 1 %. Furthermore, the experimental outcomes suggest that this new deep learning methodology outstrips conventional approaches in both convergence speed and estimation accuracy, thus promising to significantly enhance battery life and overall EV efficiency.

3D Leaf-Like Copper-Zinc Alloy Enables Dendrite-Free Zinc Anode for Ultra-Long Life Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Metallic zinc exhibits immense potential as an anode material for aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and inherent safety. However, practical applications are hindered by dendrite formation and poor cycling stability. Herein, a facile substitution reaction method is presented to fabricate a 3D leaf-like Cu@Zn composite anode. This unique architecture, featuring a 3D network of leaf-like Cu on a Zn foil surface, significantly reduces nucleation overpotential and facilitates uniform Zn plating/stripping, effectively suppressing dendrite growth. Notably, an alloy layer of CuZn5 forms in situ on the 3D Cu layer during cycling. DFT calculations reveal that this CuZn5 alloy possesses a lower Zn binding energy compared to both Cu and Zn metal, further promoting Zn plating/stripping and enhancing electrochemical kinetics. Consequently, the symmetric Cu@Zn electrode exhibits remarkable cycling stability, surpassing 1300 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 with negligible dendrite formation. Furthermore, full cells comprising Cu@Zn||VO2 exhibit superior capacity and rate performance compared to bare Zn anodes. This work provides a promising strategy for constructing highly stable and efficient Zn anodes for next-generation aqueous zinc batteries.

Value addition of MXenes as photo-/electrocatalysts in water splitting for sustainable hydrogen production

The energy transition from fossil fuel-based to renewable energy is a global agenda. At present, a major concern in the green hydrogen economy is the demand for clean fuels and non-noble materials to produce hydrogen through water splitting. Researchers are focusing on addressing this concern with the help of the development of appropriate non-noble-based photo-/electrocatalytic materials. A new class of two-dimensional materials, MXenes, have recently shown tremendous potential for water splitting to produce H2via a photoelectrochemical process. The unique properties of emerging 2D MXene materials, such as hydrophilic surface functionalities, higher surface-to-volume ratios, and inherent flexibility, present these materials as appropriate photo-/electrocatalytic materials. Unique value addition and innovative strategies such as the introduction of end-group modification, heterojunctions, and nanostructure engineering have shown the potential of MXene materials as emerging photo-/electrocatalysts for water splitting. When integrated with conventional noble metal catalysts, MXene-based catalysts demonstrated a lower overpotential for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and a remarkable boost in performance for enhanced H2 production rates surpassing those of pristine noble metal-based catalysts. These promote future perspectives for the utilization of chemically synthesized MXenes as alternative photo-/electrocatalysts. Future research direction should focus on MXene synthesis and utilization for surface modification, composite formation, stabilization, and optimization in synthesis methods and post-synthesis treatments. This review highlights the progress in the understanding of fundamental mechanisms and issues associated with water splitting, influencing factors of MXenes, their value addition role, and application strategies for water splitting, including performance, challenges, and outlook of MXene-based photo-/electrocatalysts, in the last five years.

The synthesis and supercapacitor application of flexible free-standing Ti3C2Tx, Mo2TiC2Tx, and V4C3Tx MXene films

MXenes represent a fascinating category of two-dimensional materials made up of transition metal carbides and nitrides, currently attracting significant research attention, especially in energy storage. However, the electrochemical properties of MXene materials with varying elemental compositions may exhibit significant differences. In order to optimally select types of MXenes that are more suitable for energy storage and explore their energy storage mechanisms, three kinds of different elemental compositions of delaminated MXenes (d-Ti3C2Tx, d-Mo2TiC2Tx, and d-V4C3Tx) were prepared by solid-phase synthesis, liquid-phase etching, and mechanical exfoliation method, successively. The obtained single-layer or few-layer MXene nanosheets were self-assembled into flexible free-standing film electrodes via vacuum-assisted filtration, and the detailed material preparation and characterization can guide the synthesis of more MXenes. Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive study on the effects of various aqueous electrolytes (3 M H2SO4, 3 M KOH, and 3 M Na2SO4) and temperatures (0 °C, 20 °C, and 40 °C) on their electrochemical performance. This work optimized the MXene types that are more suitable for electrochemical energy storage application (d-Ti3C2Tx and d-V4C3Tx), and also found that the V4C3Tx MXene has excellent rate performance and long cycling performance, and has guiding significance for the development of MXene materials in energy storage. More significantly, the d-V4C3Tx MXene exhibits exceptional specific capacitance in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, reaching 292.0 F g-1 in 3 M H2SO4, the highest among the three types of MXenes, and 184.3 F g-1 in 3 M KOH, far surpassing the performance of the d-Mo2TiC2Tx and d-Ti3C2Tx MXenes (less than 100 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1). Furthermore, this reveals that H+ intercalation/deintercalation, showing pseudocapacitance characteristics, along with the large interlayer spacing play a vital role in energy storage for MXenes, and an asymmetric configuration is an effective means to improve the energy density of aqueous supercapacitors. The comparative analysis aims to enhance the understanding of MXene materials' potential in advanced energy storage systems.

Synergistic effect of Ti3C2Tx MXene/PAN nanofiber and LLZTO particles on high-performance PEO-based solid electrolyte for lithium metal battery

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been considered the most promising separators for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) due to their ease of processing and low cost. However, the practical applications of SPEs in ASSLMBs are limited by their low ionic conductivities and mechanical strength. Herein, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected MXene (Ti3C2Tx) network and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) particles synergistically reinforced polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based SPE, where the association of Li+ with ether-oxygen in PEO could be significantly weakened through the Lewis acid-base interactions between the electron-absorbing group (Ti-F, -O-) of Ti3C2Tx and Li+. Besides, the TFSI- in lithium salts could be immobilized by hydrogen bonds from the Ti-OH of Ti3C2Tx. The 3D interconnected Ti3C2Tx network not only alleviated the agglomeration of inorganic fillers (LLZTO), but also improved the mechanical strength of composite solid electrolyte (CSE). Consequently, the assembled Li||CSE||Li symmetric battery showed excellent cycling stability at 35 ℃ (stable cycling over 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2, 0.1 mAh cm-2) and -2 ℃ (stable cycling over 2500 h at 0.05 mA cm-2, 0.05 mAh cm-2). Impressively, the LiFePO4||CSE||Li battery showed a high discharge capacity of 145.3 mAh/g at 0.3 C after 300 cycles at 35 ℃. This rational structural design provided a new strategy for the preparation of high-performance solid-state electrolytes for lithium metal batteries.

Electron regulation of CeO2 on CoP multi-shell hetero-junction micro-sphere towards highly efficient water oxidation

CeO2 has been identified as a significant cocatalyst to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of transition metal phosphides (TMPs). However, the electrocatalytic mechanism by which CeO2 enhances the catalytic activity of TMP remains unclear. In this study, we have successfully developed a unique CeO2-CoP-1-4 multishell microsphere heterostructure catalyst through a simple hydrothermal and calcination process. CeO2-CoP-1-4 exhibits great potential for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), requiring only an overpotential of 254 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, CeO2-CoP-1-4 demonstrates excellent operating durability lasting for 55 h. The presence of CeO2 as a cocatalyst can regulate the microsphere structure of CoP, the resulting multishell microsphere structure can shorten the mass transfer distance, and improve the utilization rate of the active site. Furthermore, in situ Raman and ex situ characterizations, and DFT theoretical calculation results reveal that CeO2 can effectively regulates the electronic structure of Co species, reduces the reaction free energy of rate-limiting step, thus increase the reaction kinetic. Overall, this study provides experimental and theoretical evidence to better comprehend the mechanism and structure evolution of CeO2 in enhancing the OER performance of CoP, offering a unique design inspiration for the development of efficient hollow heterojunction electrocatalysts.
