Force delivery properties of thermoplastic orthodontic materials

INTRODUCTION

Our objectives were to evaluate the force and energy (resilience) delivery properties of thermoplastic overlay orthodontic materials and to determine the changes in force delivery properties after thermocycling or repeated load cycling.

METHODS

Three types and 3 thicknesses of materials were investigated. Three-point bending-recovery tests were performed at baseline and after cycling procedures. For cycling, the specimens were thermocycled for 1000 cycles or repeatedly deflected by 1 mm for 100 cycles. Vickers hardness was measured to determine the changes after thermocycling or repeated load cycling.

RESULTS

The amount of deflection for optimal force delivery was 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Thin material exerted high energy in the deflection range of optimal force delivery. In the deflection ranges of optimal force delivery (0.2-0.5 mm), the force delivery properties after thermocycling were not different from those at the baseline (P >.01) but were different after repeated load cycling (P <.01). Thermocycling and repeated load cycling influenced Vickers hardness significantly.

CONCLUSIONS

Thin material (0.508 mm) can deliver higher energy than thick materials (0.762 or 1.016 mm, P <.01) of the same brand. Therefore, thin material should be selected in the same brand of material. The effect of repeated deflection during service should be considered.

Assessment of in vitro methods used to promote adhesive interface degradation: a critical review

One factor that has a great influence on clinical performance of dental restorations is their resistance to degradation. Morphological changes in the structure of tooth-restoration interface aged in the oral environment have been reported. However, even though the in vivo performance is the ultimate testing environment for predicting the behavior of restorations because of the complexity of intraoral conditions, in vitro models such as thermocycling, mechanical loading, pH cycling, and aging of materials in distilled water, NaOCl, and food-simulating solutions may provide important information about the fundamental mechanisms involved in resin-tooth interface degradation. Most recently, the effect of host-derived enzymes and the storage in deproteinizing solutions (such as aqueous NaOCl) on the degradation of resin-dentin bonds has also been described. This review considers the importance of these in vitro methods on bond durability interface in an attempt to understand the behavior of restoratives over time. The first section is focused on the mechanism of in vivo biodegradation, whereas the second looks at studies that have described the influence of water storage, NaOCl storage, host-derived matrix metalloproteinases, thermocycling, mechanical loading, pH cycling, and food-simulating solutions on the degradation of the adhesive interface. It is obvious that these methodologies do not occur separately in the oral cavity, but that each one has a specific importance in the mechanisms of bond degradation.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The in vitro methods used to simulate bond degradation may describe important points related to the clinical performance of restorations. This article evaluates the mechanism of the in vivo biodegradation of adhesive interfaces as well as the influences that various testing methods have on these bonds.

Effect of Restorative Technique and Thermal/Mechanical Treatment on Marginal Adaptation and Compressive Strength of Esthetic Restorations

This study demonstrated that esthetic restorations prepared with indirect or direct techniques had similar compressive strengths and marginal adaptation. Marginal deterioration over time was observed for both types of restorations; however, there was an increase in the prevalence of catastrophic fractures among direct restorations.

Dental adhesion review: Aging and stability of the bonded interface

OBJECTIVE

Most of current dental adhesive systems show favorable immediate results in terms of retention and sealing of bonded interface, thereby counteracting polymerization shrinkage that affects resin-based restorative materials. Despite immediate efficacy, there are major concerns when dentin bonded interfaces are tested after aging even for short time period, i.e. 6 months.

METHODS

This study critically discusses the latest peer-reviewed reports related to formation, aging and stability of resin bonding, focusing on the micro and nano-phenomena related to adhesive interface degradation.

RESULTS

Most simplified one-step adhesives were shown to be the least durable, while three-step etch-and-rinse and two-step self-etch adhesives continue to show the highest performances, as reported in the overwhelming majority of studies. In other words, a simplification of clinical application procedures is done to the detriment of bonding efficacy. Among the different aging phenomena occurring at the dentin bonded interfaces, some are considered pivotal in degrading the hybrid layer, particularly if simplified adhesives are used. Insufficient resin impregnation of dentin, high permeability of the bonded interface, sub-optimal polymerization, phase separation and activation of endogenous collagenolytic enzymes are some of the recently reported factors that reduce the longevity of the bonded interface.

SIGNIFICANCE

In order to overcome these problems, recent studies indicated that (1) resin impregnation techniques should be improved, particularly for two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives; (2) the use of conventional multi-step adhesives is recommended, since they involve the use of a hydrophobic coating of nonsolvated resin; (3) extended curing time should be considered to reduce permeability and allow a better polymerization of the adhesive film; (4) proteases inhibitors as additional primer should be used to increase the stability of the collagens fibrils within the hybrid layer inhibiting the intrinsic collagenolytic activity of human dentin.

Bonding Durability of Single-Step Adhesives to Previously Acid-Etched Dentin

To achieve optimum bond strengths, acid etching of dentin prior to the application of single-step self-etch adhesive systems should be avoided.

Effect of Prior Acid Etching on Bonding Durability of Single-Step Adhesives

The ability of acid etching to increase enamel bond strengths varies among single-step self-etch adhesive systems.

Tensile strength and durability of bovine dentin

This study investigated the effects of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of dentin. Bovine dentin were divided into 10 groups, which were then subjected to various conditions: intact after preparation, thereby serving as a control; heating in boiling water for 45 minutes; 10,000 thermal cycles in water; 10,000 thermal cycles in PBS; storage in water at 5, 23, or 55 degrees C for two weeks; and storage in PBS at 5, 23, or 55 degrees C for two weeks. Subsequently, bovine dentin were trimmed into dumbbell-shaped specimens and the tensile test performed in distilled water at 37 degrees C. Mean tensile strengths were compared statistically by one-way ANOVA and Fisher's PLTD test (p<0.05). Fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and reliability of the results was analyzed with Weibull distribution. Tensile strength did not significantly change after thermal cycling or storage in water and PBS at all temperatures tested (71.2-77.0 MPa) but decreased after treatment with boiling water (65.5 MPa).

Evaluation of polymerization in fluoride-containing composite resins

Fluoride-containing restorative materials are frequently utilized to delay or inhibit caries. The quality of the fluoride-containing composite resins was evaluated by testing their microhardness, polymerization shrinkage, thermal expansion coefficient, and surface morphology. Some of them were evaluated in conjunction with the thermocycling process. The microhardness values of the thermocycled specimens were similar to those of the specimens immersed only in distilled water. Among the specimens, Surefil showed the highest (68.6 +/- 1.2 Hv) value. A linear correlation was found between microhardness and the filler content (vol%) of the specimens regardless of their states. Polymerization shrinkage rapidly increased during the light curing, and then it reached a plateau. The shrinkage values increased as the specimens became thicker. In a temperature range of 30 approximately 80 degrees C, the coefficients of thermal expansion of the control specimens ranged between 43 x 10(-6)/ degrees C and 77 x 10(-6)/ degrees C. An inverse correlations were observed between the filler content (vol%) and the coefficient of thermal expansion and between microhardness and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the control specimens. Tetric Ceram showed a perforated or "Swiss-cheese" morphology after thermocycling. It was unique and occurred only in this product.

Influence of thermal cycling on dentin bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesive systems

This study investigated the influence of thermal cycling on the dentin bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesive systems. The Absolute, Clearfil Tri-S Bond, G-Bond and One-Up Bond F Plus systems were used. Bovine mandibular incisors were mounted in self-curing resin, and the facial surfaces were wet ground with #600 SiC paper. Adhesives were applied to the prepared dentin surfaces, and they were light irradiated according to each manufacturer's instructions. Resin composites were condensed into a mold (4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height) and light irradiated for 30 seconds. Bonded specimens were divided into three groups and subjected to different storage conditions as follows: 37 degrees C water for 24 hours; 37 degrees C water for 24 hours followed by 10,000 thermal cycles between 5 degrees C and 60 degrees C or 37 degrees C water for 24 hours followed by 20,000 thermal cycles between 5 degrees C and 60 degrees C. Ten samples per group were tested in a shear mode at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/minute. Analysis of variance and Tukey's HSD test at the 0.05 significance level were used to compare the three storage conditions for each adhesive system. After 24 hours storage in water, the mean dentin bond strengths ranged from 11.4 MPa to 17.1 MPa. The Clearfil Tri-S Bond system showed the highest bond strength. After 10,000 thermal cycles, the mean bond strengths remained unchanged except for those of the Clearfil Tri-S Bond system, which significantly increased. Significant decreases in bond strength were observed for the Absolute and One-Up Bond F Plus systems after 20,000 thermal cycles. Failure mode was commonly due to adhesive breakdown associated with partial cohesive failure of the adhesive resin. From the results of this study, in terms of simplifying the clinical procedure, the benefit of using single-step self-etch systems might be acceptable.

Bond Durability of Composite Luting Agents to Ceramic When Exposed to Long-term Thermocycling

Depending on the ceramic surface treatment and chemical composition of the luting cement, there is a varying degree of bonding effectiveness of resin composite cements to CAD-CAM ceramic after thermocycling.

Load-bearing capacity of all-ceramic posterior four-unit fixed partial dentures with different zirconia frameworks

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the load-bearing capacity of posterior four-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) produced with two different yttria-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics, one being a presintered material, the other a fully sintered, hot isostatically pressed material. Additionally, as a novel approach, the influence of preliminary mechanical damage upon the fracture force of an FPD has been investigated. A total of 20 frameworks each were milled from presintered zirconia and from fully sintered zirconia. Prior to veneering, 10 frameworks of each material were 'damaged' by a defined saw cut similar to an accidental flaw generated during shape cutting. Before fracture testing, all FPDs were subjected to thermal and mechanical cycling. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate fracture surfaces. Statistical analysis showed that FPDs milled from fully sintered zirconia had a significantly higher fracture resistance compared with specimens made from presintered material, whereas preliminary damage did not have a significant effect. After aging, FPDs made from both materials were capable of withstanding occlusal forces reported in the literature. Therefore, both types of Y-TZP may be suitable for posterior four-unit all-ceramic FPDs, although further prolonged aging experiments and prospective clinical trials are required to prove their fitness for clinical use.

Shear bond strength comparison of two adhesive systems following thermocycling. A new self-etch primer and a resin-modified glass ionomer

OBJECTIVE

To compare the effects of a standardized thermocycling protocol on the shear bond strength (SBS) of two adhesive systems: a resin-modified glass ionomer and a composite resin used with a new self-etching primer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty human molars were cleaned, mounted, and randomly divided into two groups. In group 1, brackets were bonded to the teeth using Fuji Ortho LC adhesive, and in group 2, the Transbond Plus system was used. The teeth were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours, thermocycled between 5 and 55 degrees C, and debonded using a universal testing machine. The enamel surface was examined under 10x magnification to determine the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the tooth. Student's t-test was used to compare the SBS and the chi-square test was used to compare the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores.

RESULTS

The mean SBS for the brackets bonded using the Fuji Ortho LC was 6.4 +/- 4.5 MPa, and the mean SBS for the Transbond Plus system was 6.1 +/- 3.2 MPa. The result of the t-test comparisons (t = 0.207) indicated that there was no significant difference (P = .837) between the two groups. The comparisons of the ARI scores (chi(2) = 0.195) indicated that bracket failure mode was not significantly different (P = .907) between the two adhesives.

CONCLUSION

Although SBS and ARI scores were not significantly different for the two adhesives, clinicians need to take into consideration the other properties of the adhesives before using them.

Effect of prolonged thermal cycling on microleakage around Class V cavities restored with glass-ceramic inserts with different coefficients of thermal expansion: an in vitro study

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate microleakage around Class V glass-ceramic restorations of different coefficients of thermal expansion after prolonged thermal cycling.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and twenty noncarious extracted human premolars (patient age range 12-20 years) were randomly assigned to three groups. Standard Class V preparations were cut in the buccal surface using customised Cerana burs, size no. 3. Glass-ceramic inserts from two manufacturers (Cerana, Nordiska Dental AB, Helsingborg, Sweden; Beta-Quartz, Hager & Werken GmbH, Duisburg, Germany) were used to restore the cavities and were luted with a hybrid, high-viscous composite (Tetric Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and a bonding agent (Excite, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). A control group, without inserts, was bulk-filled with the same composite used as the luting agent. In accordance with American Dental Association guidelines, half of the preparation was in enamel, half in dentine/cementum and had a mesio-distal width of 3 mm, an occluso-gingival height of 3 mm, and a depth of 2 mm. All margins had butt joints. Sixty teeth, selected at random, were not thermal cycled; the remaining 60 teeth were thermal cycled 4000 times between water baths held at 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C and the specimens prepared and examined for microleakage using 2.0% Procion Red (ICI, Slough, UK) dye, buffered at pH7, as a marker. The results were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (ANOVA) at a 95% significance level.

RESULTS

At the occlusal margins there was no significant difference in microleakage between the three groups (P>0.5) without thermal cycling. After thermal cycling, microleakage at the occlusal margins was significantly less around cavities restored with Cerana glass-ceramic inserts versus Beta-Quartz and Tetric Ceram (P<0.05 in both cases). At the gingival margins, there was no significant difference in microleakge between the groups before thermal cycling (P>0.5). After thermal cycling, there was significantly less microleakage between Cerana inserts and Tetric Ceram (P<0.05). Comparisons between non-thermal cycled and thermal cycled groups showed there was no significant difference with the Cerana inserts (P=0.5590).

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

The results indicate that, after thermal cycling, restorations restored with Cerana glass-ceramic inserts, which have a coefficient of thermal expansion approximating to that of enamel, show a decrease in marginal microleakage, compared with Beta-Quartz glass-ceramic inserts and Tetric Ceram resin-based composite material. Restorative materials, which have a coefficient of thermal expansion approximating to that of enamel, would seem to be the materials of choice in reducing the problem of marginal microleakege.

The effect of temperature on viscoelastic properties of glass ionomer cements and compomers

The objective of this study was to determine the viscoelastic properties of different types of glass ionomer cements (GICs) and compomers under varying temperature conditions found in the mouth. The materials tested were a conventional GIC (Aqua Ionofil U), a resin modified GIC (Fuji II LC), a highly viscous GIC (Voco Ionofil Molar), and two polyacid modified composite resins/compomers (Glasiosite and Dyract Flow). Six groups of four specimens were prepared from each material. One group was stored dry for 24 h and was subsequently tested dry at 21 degrees C. Each of the remaining five groups was stored for 24 h in distilled water at the temperatures 21, 30.5, 37, 43.5, and 50 degrees C, respectively, and was subsequently tested at that temperature. Shear storage modulus and loss tangent were determined by conducting dynamic torsional loading. Static shear moduli were determined by applying a constant torque (below the proportional limit of the materials) for 10 s and recording the angular deformation of the specimens. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan's test (alpha= 0.05). It was found that the viscoelastic properties varied significantly (p < 0.05) across the different materials. The compomer Glasiosite, with the highest filler content, and the highly viscous GIC Voco Ionofil Molar exhibited the highest elastic moduli and lowest loss tangents. Viscoelastic properties varied also significantly (p < 0.05) with temperature levels, but changes in the tested region were not indicative of a glass transition. Dynamic shear storage moduli were highly correlated to the static ones. Storage in water lowered the values of elastic moduli.

Influence of resin composite shade and location of the gingival margin on the microleakage of posterior restorations

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of resin composite shade and location of the gingival margin (enamel or dentin) on the microleakage of proximal restorations on posterior teeth.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Sixty freshly extracted human third molars were prepared with standardized Class II box-shaped cavities with proportional size and shape, with distal gingival margins located on the enamel and mesial gingival margins on dentin. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups according to resin shade (n=10): G1-Incisal; G2-A1; G3-A2; G4-A3; G5-A3.5; G6-A4. The cavities were restored with a total-etch 1-bottle adhesive system and microhybrid resin composites inserted in 4 increments, light cured for 20 seconds through the occlusal surface, then an additional 60 seconds for each surface. After 1 week of immersion in distilled water, the specimens were thermocycled (500 cycles, 5 degrees -55 degrees C, 30 seconds dwell time), sealed with nail polish and immersed in 0.5% basic fuschin solution for 24 hours. The restorations were sectioned longitudinally, and microleakage was evaluated using a 0-3 score scale.

RESULTS

Data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests at p<0.05. No statistically significant differences between groups were observed regarding the shade of resin composite (p=0.8570). When margins (enamel or dentin) were considered separately, statistically significant differences were observed between groups (p<0.0001), with enamel margins exhibiting lower degrees of microleakage.

CONCLUSION

The variation of resin composite shades utilized in this study did not influence the microleakage of Class II restorations. However, the location of the gingival margin influenced the microleakage.

Morphological Evaluation of 2- and 1-step Self-etching System Interfaces with Dentin

This study investigated the interface of different self-etching systems with dentin and showed that the intensity of interaction was mostly dependent on the acidity of the primers/adhesives used.

Effects of luting agent and thermocycling on bond strengths to root canal dentine

AIM

To investigate the effects of luting agent and thermocycling on bond strengths to root canal dentine.

METHODOLOGY

Extracted maxillary canines (n =144) were root filled and divided into six groups of 24 teeth each. Fibre posts (FRC Postec) were inserted using six luting agents: Panavia F, Multilink, Variolink II, PermaFlo DC, RelyX Unicem and Clearfil Core. Each root was sliced into six discs (thickness 1 mm) representing the coronal, middle and apical part of the root canal. Push-out tests were performed 24 h after post insertion (n = 12) as well as after thermocycling (5000x; 5-55 degrees C, 30 s) (n = 12). Statistical analysis was conducted using analysis of variance (anova) followed by post-hoc comparisons (Tukey-B). The influence of thermocycling on bond strengths was investigated for each material and region separately using t-tests.

RESULTS

The bond strengths were significantly affected by the luting agent (P < 0.001), the root position (P = 0.003) and thermocycling (P < 0.001; three-way anova). RelyX had significantly higher bond strengths compared with all other materials (P < 0.05; Tukey-B). The apical region of the root canal had significantly higher bond strengths compared with the middle and coronal region (P < 0.05; Tukey-B). After thermocycling for RelyX a significant increase in bond strengths was detected for the middle and apical region (P < 0.01; t-test, Bonferroni factor 18).

CONCLUSIONS

Bond strengths were affected significantly by luting agent and root position. RelyX had higher bond strengths compared with other materials. The apical region of the canals was characterized by significantly higher bond strengths.

Influence of fluorescent whitening agent on the fluorescent emission of resin composites

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study was to determine the fluorescent emission of experimental resin composites after addition of a fluorescent whitening agent in varied concentrations. The effects of thermocycling and composition of resin matrix on the fluorescent emission were also determined.

METHODS

An experimental light curing resin matrix was made by mixing Bis-GMA, UDMA and TEGDMA in the ratio of 1:1:1 by weight, and silane coated glass filler was added in the ratio of 50 wt.% of resin composite. A fluorescent whitening agent [FWA, 1,4-double-(benzoxazole-group-2-group)naphthalene] was added with the concentration of 0.01-0.1%. To determine the difference by the resin matrix, two resin composites (60 wt.% Bis-GMA or UDMA with 40 wt.% TEGDMA) with the same filler content were made, and the FWA was added. Five specimens of 2mm in thickness were made for each group. Spectral reflectance was measured relative to the illuminant D65 on a reflection spectrophotometer. From the spectral reflectance values, the difference in reflectance (fluorescence spectra) by the inclusion or exclusion of UV component was calculated. After the baseline measurement, thermocycling was performed for 500 and 1000 cycles, and the fluorescent emission was measured again.

RESULTS

The concentration of FWA influenced the fluorescent peak heights and areas (p<0.05), but thermocycling up to 1000 cycles did not influence the values. Fluorescence peak wavelength was not changed by the resin matrix, but peak height and area were influenced by the resin matrix (p<0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

FWA added with the concentrations of 0.01 and 0.05% emitted fluorescence, which was higher than those from commercial resin composites.

Effect of Thermal Cycling on Enamel Bond Strength of Single-step Self-etch Systems

After thermal cycling, some recently introduced simplified bonding systems showed no change in enamel bond strengths.

Influence of thermal and mechanical load cycling on microtensile bond strengths of total and self-etching adhesive systems

This study evaluated the influence of different thermal (TC) and mechanical (MC) cycling protocols on microtensile bond strength (muTBS) to cervical dentin margins of Class II restorations using two total-etch (TE) adhesives and one self-etching (SE) primer. Class II slot cavities were prepared on the mesial surfaces of 168 bovine incisors and were divided into three groups according to the bonding system used: Single Bond, OptiBond Solo Plus and Clearfil SE Bond. All cavities were restored with Filtek Z250 composite. Following restorative procedures, the restored teeth were allocated to seven subgroups (n = 8) according to the thermal/mechanical protocol performed: G1-control (no cycling), G2-100,000 MC, G3-200,000 MC, G4-500,000 MC, G5-100,000 MC+1,000 TC, G6-200,000 MC+1,000 TC, G7-500,000 MC+1,000 TC. TC was performed using 5 +/- 2 degrees C and 55 +/- 2 degrees C baths, with a dwell time of 60 seconds in each bath. MC was achieved with an axial force of 80 N at 2 cycles/second. The restorations were sectioned perpendicular to the cervical bonded interface into two 0.8-1-mm thick slabs. The slabs were trimmed at the interface to obtain a cross-sectional surface area of 0.8-1 mm2. All specimens were then subjected to muTBS (v = 0.5 mm/minute). Fracture mode analysis was performed using SEM. Bond strength mean values (MPa) were analyzed with ANOVA 3-way and Tukey's test (alpha = 5%). Dunnett's test was used to compare tested groups against Control groups of each adhesive system (alpha = 56%). SE primer presented lower mean bond strength values when compared to TE adhesives (p = 0.05). In addition, specimens restored with the SE primer did not resist to the 200,000 and 500,000 MC associated with TC. The application of 100,000 MC did not present a significant decrease in bond strength when compared to the control. Mixed failures were predominant for all groups. The higher the amount of thermal/mechanical cycles, the greater the number of mixed failures and the lower the percentage of adhesive failures.

Evaluation of shear bond strength of microwaveable acrylic resins in denture repair: a comparative study

OBJECTIVE

Acrylic denture base fracture is a common mode of failure. Heat-cured, auto-polymerized, visible light-cured, and microwaveable acrylic resins have been used as repair materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of two microwaveable resins (Acron MC and Justi) and one auto-polymerizing acrylic resin (ProBase Cold) as denture repair materials as opposed to a heat-cured one using the non-flasking procedure after thermocycling and photoaging.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ninety cylindrical specimens were made using the Vertex Rapid Simplified heat-cured acrylic resin. Each repair acrylic resin was poured on the specimen's surface using a cylindrical rubber mold with an internal diameter of 8.5 mm. Thirty specimens for each repair material were made. The control group consisted of 10 specimens from each group which were stored in water for 24 h at 37 degrees C; another 10 specimens from each group were subjected to a thermocycling procedure (5-55 degrees C for 1,000 cycles), while the remaining 10 specimens were subjected to a photoaging procedure. Shear bond strength was measured on a universal testing machine and mode of bond failure was examined under a stereomicroscope. Two-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni post hoc test were performed to identify statistical differences at alpha = 0.05.

RESULTS

Justi's shear bond values were significantly inferior to those of ProBase Cold (p <0.05) and Acron MC (p <0.05). ProBase Cold and Acron MC acrylic resins exhibited similar values (p >0.05) of shear bond strength. Thermocycling and photoaging did not affect the shear bond values of any of the materials under investigation (p >0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

ProBase Cold and Acron MC exhibited similar shear bond values. Justi repair material exhibited inferior bond strength compared with that of ProBase Cold and Acron MC. Aging procedures did not affect the bonding properties of any of the repair materials.

Implantation of an RFID-tag into human molars to reduce hard forensic identification labor. Part 2: physical properties

Modifying and implanting existing RFID-tags into extracted human molars was described previously [P. Thevissen, G. Poelman, B. Puers, M. De Cooman, G. Willems, Implantation of RFID-tag into human molars to reduce hard forensic identification labor. Part 1. Working principle, Forensic Sci. Int. 156 (2006)]. Maximal vertical occlusal load during which the implanted RFID-tags remain active was evaluated in vitro. The temperature dependency of the implanted RFID-tags was studied on the extracted teeth to find out the maximal obtainable temperature before failure and a test with embedded thermistors to verify temperature distributions. The maximal working temperature of the implanted RFID-tags was revealed and gave indications for the set-up of measuring intra oral and intra tooth temperature during the cremation of a human body. Fatigue was induced on the implanted teeth by thermocycling. The results of this investigation showed the need of putting an extra insulating layer around the modified tags before implantation. The different in vitro tests indicated that the implanted RFID-tags can support certain oral and forensic circumstances.

Effect of Thermocycling on Interfacial Gap-formation in Class V Cavities and Mechanical Properties of Spherical Silica Filler Addition to Resin-modified Glass Ionomer Restorations

The effects of thermocycling at 20,000 cycles and addition of silanized spherical silica filler (SF) on resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) restorations were investigated. A RMGIC added with an untreated spherical silica filler (UF) was used as a comparison. Marginal gaps in Class V tooth cavities, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, and shear bond strengths to enamel and dentin were examined. All thermocycled samples showed decreased frequency of marginal gap formation as compared to the 24-hour samples, with reduction of 73% to 95%. At the immediate condition, after 24 hours, and after thermocycling, the addition of 10 wt% SF yielded the most favorable results in terms of marginal gap formation in Class V cavities, compressive strength, flexural strength, and shear bond strength to enamel. Diametral tensile strength and flexural strength were also increased significantly by the addition of 5 wt% SF. Further, shear bond strength tests showed that the addition of SF had no effect on bonding capability to enamel and dentin.

Changes in color and translucency of porcelain-repairing resin composites after thermocycling

The objective of this study was to determine the changes in color and translucency of dental porcelain-repairing resin composites compared to dental porcelain after thermocycling. Color and spectral reflectance of three shades (A2, A3, and A3.5) of one brand of dental porcelain and three basic shades (A2, A3, and A3.5) and three combinations (A2/A3, A3/3.5, and A2/A3.5) of three brands of porcelain-repairing resin composites (ABT, FSP, and TCR) were measured, before and after thermocycling for 3000 cycles, relative to the illuminant D65. The specimen was 2 mm in thickness, and 1 mm of each shade was layered to make combined shades. Changes in color (DeltaE*ab) and translucency parameter (DeltaTP) were calculated. A general linear model by the material (porcelain or resin composite) and shade was used to compare differences (alpha = 0.05). The range of color changes was 0.68-1.67 in porcelain, 0.56-1.30 in ABT, 2.28-3.10 in FSP, and 0.36-1.15 in TCR. The range of DeltaTP was 0.45-0.96 in porcelain, -0.48 to 0.94 in ABT, -1.31 to 0.82 in FSP, and -0.51 to 1.91 in TCR. After thermocycling, changes in color and TP were correlated with the shade of the material, but not with the material. The discrepancy in the changes of color and translucency after thermocycling between porcelain and porcelain-repairing resin composites should be considered when selecting repairing materials.

Effect of thermal cycling on bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesives to bovine dentin

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of thermal cycling on dentin bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesives. Five commercially available single-step self-etch systems were used. The adhesives were applied to the dentin surfaces of bovine incisors, and then light-irradiated. Resin composites were condensed into a mold and light-irradiated. Bonded specimens were divided into two groups and stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 h without thermal cycling, or in water at 37 degrees C for 24 h followed by 10,000 thermal cycles between 5 degrees C and 60 degrees C. Ten samples per group were tested for shear strength at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. The data were analyzed by Student's t test and Tukey HSD test at a probability level of 0.05. After 24 h of storage in water, the mean dentin bond strengths ranged from 9.3 MPa to 14.0 MPa. After 10,000 thermal cycles, the mean bond strengths remained unchanged. Failure after the test was commonly due to adhesive breakdown associated with partial cohesive failure of the resin. The present results suggest that the benefit of using single-step self-etch systems, in terms of simplifying the clinical procedure, might be acceptable even after thermal stresses.

Effects of aging methods on microleakage of an adhesive system used as a sealant on contaminated surfaces

This study evaluated the effects of aging methods on the microleakage of an adhesive system used for sealing pit and fissure surfaces. After acid etching, the occlusal surfaces of 60 permanent teeth were contaminated with 1mL of human plasma and then sealed with OptiBond dual cure, activated in the ramp mode (Optilux 501). The sample was then divided into eight experimental and a control groups. Aging was performed for 20 days in 5, 37, 55 and 5-55ºC (200 cycles/day) under water contact or not. After subjecting the specimens to the AgNO(3) technique, they were sectioned twice. Dye penetration was measured and the mean values were subjected to ANOVA. No group provided hermetic seal against dye penetration, even the control group (without treatment). Significant aging x water interaction effect (p=0.033) was observed. The group without water contact at 5ºC (p=0.015) showed the least dye penetration value. The results led to the main conclusions: 1) all groups showed dye penetration, even the control group; 2) storage teeth at 5ºC on dry condition provided the lowest degree of dye penetration; 3) in the presence of water, the temperature variations seem not to affect the microleakage values.

Comparison of Bond Strength of a Pressed Ceramic Fused to Metal versus Feldspathic Porcelain Fused to Metal

PURPOSE

To compare the debonding/crack initiation strength (D/CIS) of a low-fusing pressable leucite-based glass ceramic (PC) fused to metal to a feldspathic porcelain (FP) fused to metal.

MATERIALS & METHODS

As per ISO 9693:1999, 40 rectangular metal specimens (25.0 mm x 0.5 mm x 3.0 mm) were prepared. Twenty of the specimens were cast in a base metal nickel-chromium alloy (BA), and 20 were cast in a noble metal palladium-silver alloy (NA). Ten randomly selected NA and BA alloy specimens had FP applied. The remaining 10 NA and BA alloy specimens had ash-free wax patterns applied, the metal-wax complexes invested, and were pressed with a PC. The dimensions of the ceramic specimens were 8.0 mm x 1.0 mm x 3.0 mm, creating a combined metal-ceramic complex thickness of 1.5 mm. All specimens were subject to a three-point bending test at a crosshead speed of 1.5 mm/min. Fracture loads were recorded in Newtons and D/CISs calculated by the formula tau(b)=k x F(fail).

RESULTS

Mean D/CISs, measured in MPa (standard deviations): NA-FP 32.56 (4.62), NA-PC 30.23 (5.06), BA-FP 30.98 (4.41), and BA-PC 31.81 (3.48). A two-way ANOVA (p > 0.05) did not demonstrate significant difference between groups.

CONCLUSION

The debonding/crack initiation strength of a low-fusing pressable leucite-based glass ceramic fused to metal was equivalent to that of a feldspathic porcelain fused to metal.

Micro-tensile bond strength of adhesives bonded to class-I cavity-bottom dentin after thermo-cycling

A widely used artificial aging methodology is thermo-cycling. The ISO TR 11450 standard (1994) recommends 500 cycles in water between 5 and 55 degrees C. Recent literature revealed that more cycles are needed to mimic long-term bonding effectiveness. Furthermore, the artificial aging effect induced by thermo-cycling is not clearly established. Two underlying mechanisms can be advanced: (1) hot water may accelerate hydrolysis and elution of interface components and (2) repetitive contraction/expansion stress can be generated.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative contribution of both chemical (hydrolysis and elution of interface components) and mechanical (repetitive contraction/expansion stress) degradation pathways on the thermo-cycling-induced artificial aging of dentin-adhesive interfaces at the bottom of class-I cavities.

METHODS

The micro-tensile bond strength (muTBS) of contemporary adhesives (a three-step etch and rinse, a two-step and a one-step self-etch adhesive) bonded to class-I cavity-bottom dentin was determined after 20,000 cycles as well as after 20 days of water storage (control). Restored class-I cavities (repetitive contraction/expansion stress) as well as prepared micro-specimens (diffusion-dependent hydrolysis and elution) were subjected to the thermo-cycling regimen.

RESULTS

Thermo-cycling did not enhance chemical or mechanical degradation of the bonds produced by a two-step self-etch and a three-step etch and rinse adhesive to dentin. The one-step self-etch adhesive tested was, however, not able to withstand polymerization shrinkage stress, nor thermo-cycling, when applied in class-I cavities.

SIGNIFICANCE

Thermo-cycling results in combined contraction/expansion stress and accelerated chemical degradation. However, the relative contribution of each is strongly dependent on the specific test set-up and the adhesive used.

In vitro evaluation of the bonding of auto-polymerizing soft denture liner to cobalt-chromium alloy

This study evaluated the effects of surface pre-treatments on the bonding of auto-polymerizing silicone soft denture liner to a Co-Cr alloy denture base after cyclic thermal stressing. The bonding surfaces of Co-Cr alloy cylinders (8 mm diameter and 4 mm high) were polished with a 600-grit silicon carbide paper. The bonding surfaces received one of three pre-treatments, which included either the application of a metal primer, a metal primer after air abrasion, or a resin primer after adhesive resin coating. Tensile specimens were fabricated by polymerizing a 2-mm thickness of soft denture liner between a pair of pre-treated denture base cylinders. Failure loads were measured by tensile testing after subjecting the specimen to 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 thousand thermal cycles. Seven specimens were fabricated for 15 groups, including three pre-treatments and five thermal cycle groups. Failure loads of resin-bonded specimens, which were formerly reported, were used as references. All data were statistically analysed by two-way anova and Bonferroni test at the 95% confidence level. Adhesive resin coating of the metal surface was effective in enhancing the failure loads up to 5000 thermal cycles. However, failure loads of all metal-bonded groups were significantly lower than those of resin-bonded groups at all thermal cycling intervals. The results of this in vitro study implied that polymerizing adhesive resin on the Co-Cr alloy might be a promising method, when the clinicians need to acquire improved bonding of an auto-polymerizing soft denture liner to Co-Cr alloy denture bases.

Microtensile Bond Strength Analysis of Different Adhesive Systems and Dentin Prepared with High-Speed and Er:YAG Laser: A Comparative Study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of two adhesive systems (Single Bond and Clearfil SE Bond) subjected or not to a thermocycling procedure and applied to cavities prepared either with high-speed diamond bur or Er:YAG laser.

BACKGROUND DATA

One of the possible applications of dental lasers includes increasing the quality of bond strength.

METHODS

This in vitro study was carried out using a microtensile test on 16 bovine teeth, divided into eight groups. Cavities were prepared on superficial dentin of the medium portion of the buccal surface. After application of adhesive systems, composite restorations were performed at 5-mm height. After 24 h, four groups of teeth were immersed in water, and the other four were thermocycled. Bonded specimens were sectioned into serial 1x1-mm beams, which were subjected to a microtensile test. Final values of bond strength were measured, expressed in MPa, and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

Results were as follows: G1 (26.281 +/- 5.454 MPa); G2 (10.965 +/- 3.714 MPa); G3 (18.549 +/- 6.113 MPa); G4 (14.295 +/- 3.806 MPa); G5 (18.225 +/- 5.701 MPa); G6 (5.588 +/- 2.211 MPa); G7 (18.256 +/- 3.819 MPa); and G8 (15.423 +/- 4.714 MPa).

CONCLUSIONS

Self-etching adhesive system (SE) produced more stable bond strength results than the system that indicates total etching (SB). For dentin prepared at high speed, the total etching adhesive system was more indicated, whereas Er:YAG laser-preparation dentin was not influenced by the adhesive system. The thermocycling procedure could negatively affect microtensile bond strength of both adhesive systems, being more deleterious to SB than to SE.

Adhesive systems used for sealing contaminated surfaces: a microleakage evaluation

The aim of this study was to compare two adhesive systems (OptiBond FL TM and OptiBond SOLO TM) used as a sole material for sealing pit and fissures on contaminated surfaces with respect to microleakage. After acid etching, 56 sound teeth were contaminated with 1 µl of plasma and randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 7). The adhesives were light activated under two conditions (Optilux VCL-403TM and VCL-500TM) for 30 s. Each specimen was exposed to one of the following aging treatments: thermal (4,000 X at 5-55°C for 60 s) plus load cycling (225,000 X with 83.3 N) or thermal plus load and pH cycling (mineralizing/demineralizing solutions). Then, they were immersed in a 50% AgNO3 aqueous solution, sectioned twice and had dye penetration measured through digitized images. ANOVA methods were used to assess the main effects of the factors as well as their interactions. The results indicated a significant difference between the adhesive systems (p < 0.05), suggesting that OptiBond FL TM has a better performance with respect to microleakage and could be used as a sealing material in accidentally moist or contaminated surfaces.

Evaluation of polymerization of light-curing hybrid composite resins

The quality of polymerization of hybrid composite resins was tested to explore their feasibility for dental restorations. For this, microhardness, polymerization shrinkage, the coefficient of thermal expansion, and surface morphology were evaluated during or after light curing in conjunction with the thermocycling process. Each product had different microhardness values. The repeated thermal stimulus has no specific effect on the change of microhardness. The difference of microhardness between the thermocycled specimens and specimens stored only in distilled water was minor. The measured microhardness had a linear correlation with the filler content (vol %) of the tested specimens. The polymerization shrinkage had rapidly increased only during the light curing, and then it reached a plateau. Among the specimens, Z250 showed the least amount of shrinkage for all tested thicknesses. Regardless of the product, the shrinkage values increased as the specimens became thick. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the control specimens ranged between 42 and 55 microm/degrees C in the temperature range of 30-80 degrees C. The coefficient showed an inverse correlation with the filler content. Through the thermocycling process, Palfique Estelite showed randomly propagating cracks on the surface. Larger fillers showed a more apparent detachment than the smaller fillers.

Effect of thermal cycling and filling technique on leakage of composite resin restorations

The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro the effect on leakage of two incremental filling techniques and two composite resins with different elastic modulus and similar polymerization shrinkage. Eighty Class V cavities (4x4x2mm) were prepared in bovine incisors and were randomly restored with Z-250 (Z) or Durafill VS (D) + Single Bond in axial (a) or oblique (o) increments. The restorations were divided into two groups: Not Aged - N (4-hour-storage in water at 37ºC) and Aged - A (1-week storage in water at 37ºC + 1000 x - 5º-55ºC / 1-min dwell time). The specimens were covered with 2 coats of nail varnish so that only the restoration margins were exposed to silver nitrate 50% (2h) and developed under fluorescent light (8h). After they were sectioned twice in buccal-lingual direction, the four exposed surfaces were digitized (Vidcap) and the silver nitrate penetration was measured (ImageLab) at the incisal and gingival walls. Data were analyzed by a 3-way ANOVA (Resin, Filling Technique and Aging) separately for incisal and gingival walls (alpha=0.05). Resin and Aging were statistically significant either for the incisal and the gingival walls. The microfill composite resin infiltrated more than the hybrid composite. The thermal cycling caused an overall increase in silver nitrate penetration. The filling technique affected leakage depending on the composite resin and aging regimen.

Comparative hardness and modulus of tooth-colored restoratives: A depth-sensing microindentation study

The objective of this study was to compare the hardness and modulus of the continuum of direct tooth-colored restorative materials using a depth-sensing microindentation approach. The effects of thermal fatigue on mechanical properties were also evaluated. Six restorative materials representing the continuum were selected. They included an ormocer (Admira [AM], Voco), a giomer (Beautifil [BF], Shofu), a compomer (Dyract Extra [DE], Dentsply), a minifill composite (Esthet-X [EX], Dentsply), resin-modified (Fuji II LC [FL], GC) and highly viscous (Fuji IX [FN], GC) glass ionomer cements (GICs). Fourteen specimens (3 mm wide x 3 mm long x 2 mm deep) were made for each material. The specimens were randomly divided into two groups and treated as follows: Group A--stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 30 days; Group B--thermal cycled for 5000 cycles (35 degrees C [28s], 15 degrees C [2s], 35 degrees C [28s], 45 degrees C [2s]) and stored for 26.5 days. Hardness and modulus of the materials were determined using depth-sensing microindentation testing with the Instron MicroTester. Hardness was computed by dividing the peak load over the maximum projected contact area while modulus was calculated by analysis of the loading/unloading load-displacement (P-h) curves and the analytical model according to Oliver and Pharr (J. Mater. Res. 7 (1992) 1564). Results were analyzed using ANOVA/Scheffe's post hoc test and independent samples T-test (p<0.05). Hardness ranged 46.44-72.65 and 49.11-78.97 HV, while modulus ranged 7.86-12.78 and 8.12-13.13 GPa for Groups A and B, respectively. Although the ranking of mechanical properties were generally similar for both groups, disparities in statistical differences between materials were observed between Groups A and B for both hardness and modulus. For both groups, BF was significantly harder than DE, AM, FL and EX was significantly harder than FL. The modulus of FN was significantly greater than EX, DE, AM and FL was significantly stiffer than AM. With the exception of BF, no significant change in hardness and modulus was observed for all materials with thermocycling. The hardness and modulus of some glass ionomer-based/containing materials may be comparable or even superior to minifill and ormocer composites. Thermal fatigue should be considered when comparing mechanical properties between materials.

Influence of Cavity Configuration on Microleakage around Class V Restorations Bonded with Seven Self-Etching Adhesives

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate microleakage around Class V resin composite restorations with different cavity configurations, bonded with one of seven self-etching materials or with an adhesive using the total-etch technique.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ninety-six human molars and premolars were randomly assigned to eight groups and bonded with one of seven self-etching adhesives--Prompt-L-Pop (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), Adper Prompt-L-Pop (3M ESPE), Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray Medical, Okayama, Japan), Prime & Bond NT/NRC (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany), Xeno III (Dentsply DeTrey), One-Up Bond (Tokuyama Dental, Tokuyama, Japan), AdheSE (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein)-or with Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply DeTrey) using a separate total-etch technique. Cavities were cut in both the lingual and buccal surfaces and were approximately 3 mm mesiodistally, 1.5 mm deep, and 2.0 mm occlusogingivally. Selected at random, box-shaped cavities were cut on one side and V-shaped cavities were cut on the contralateral side. After bonding, the cavities were incrementally filled with a microhybrid composite (Tetric Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent), cured, and immediately polished with Sof-Lex (3M ESPE) disks. The teeth were thermocycled, and the specimens were examined for microleakage using Procion Brilliant Red (ICI, Slough, UK) as a marker.

RESULTS

Comparisons of both gingival and enamel margins within each of the groups showed no significant difference owing to configuration factor (C-factor; p > .5 in all cases, calculated with Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric analysis of variance [ANOVA]) and Dunn's multiple comparison test). All groups showed microleakage at the gingival margins irrespective of C-factor or bonding agent (box-shaped cavities, p = .8862; V-shaped cavities, p = .9623; using the ANOVA). Microleakage was not observed at all enamel margins regardless of C-factor or bonding agent, and there were no significant differences between the groups (box-shaped cavities, p = .9869; V-shaped cavities, p = .9550; using the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric ANOVA).

Effects of surface treatment and joint shape on microtensile bond strength of reattached root dentin segments

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

An effective bonding technique for reattaching vertical root fracture segments has not yet been established.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of surface treatment and joint shape on bond strength of reattached root dentin segments.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Microtensile dentin specimens (n=120, cross-sectional area=1.5 mm2) were obtained from 12 bovine teeth roots, and fractured under a tensile force. The segments of each group (n=6) were reattached by a 4-META/MMA-TBB adhesive resin after different treatments (etching or polishing, a 50-microm or 500-microm gap space, butt or wedge joint). The group with a 50-microm gap space and butt joint, which was not etched or polished, served as the control. After 24 hours of storage in 0.9% normal saline solution or thermal cycling (3000 cycles, 4 degrees C and 60 degrees C), the specimens were fractured in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. The microtensile bond strengths (MPa) were recorded. The bonded interface and fractured surface were observed by SEM (original magnification x 1000). The results were analyzed by a 2-way analysis of variance and the Fisher protected least significant difference post-hoc test (alpha=.05).

RESULTS

Significantly higher bond strengths (P=.0001) were shown for the nonpolished group (9.78 +/- 4.44 MPa) and the etched group (9.31 +/- 1.23 MPa) than for the polished group (fractured before test). The wedge-shaped joint exhibited the highest bond strength (18.57 +/- 3.40 MPa, P=.0017). SEM observations showed that the penetration of resin tags along the oblique dentinal tubules was within the wedge joint.

CONCLUSION

Etching and oblique tubule orientation contributed to significantly high bond strength of reattached segments to dentin after vertical root fracture.

Effect of the number of thermocycles on microleakage of resin composite restorations

Thermocycling simulates, in vitro, thermal changes that occur in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the number of cycles on microleakage. Class V cavities (1.5 mm deep, 3 mm in height and 3 mm in width) were prepared in bovine teeth, restored with a Single Bond/Z250 restorative system (3M/ESPE) and then divided into five groups of ten teeth each: group 1 was not thermocycled (control group), and groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were thermocycled 500, 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 times, respectively (5º-55º ± 2ºC, 15 s dwell time). The teeth were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin aqueous solution for 24 h, sectioned and the sections with the highest degree of microleakage were selected, scanned and the extent of dye penetration was measured by the ImageTool program. The results submitted to one-way ANOVA showed no significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). The averages of microleakage values in millimeters were: group 1 (3.92); group 2 (3.13); group 3 (4.48); group 4 (4.33) and group 5 (3.42). Thus, it was concluded that there is no relation between the increase of the number of cycles and the increase in microleakage.

Long-Term Resin Bond to Densely Sintered Aluminum Oxide Ceramic

BACKGROUND

Densely sintered aluminium oxide ceramic is a popular material for ceramic copings and all-ceramic restorations. A strong, predictable, and long-term durable resin bond is key for long-term clinical success of bonded alumina-based restorations.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to measure and compare in vitro shear bond strengths of three resin cements with and without their corresponding silane coupling/bonding agent to air particle- abraded densely sintered aluminum oxide ceramic after long-term water storage and thermocycling.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Composite resin cylinders were bonded to air particle-abraded samples of densely sintered aluminum oxide ceramic with Noribond DC (Noritake Dental Supply, Inc., Aichi, Japan), Panavia 21 EX (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan), and Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), which were used with and without their corresponding silane coupling and bonding agents (n = 15). All specimens (N = 90) were stored for 180 days in water and subjected to repeated thermocycling for a total of 12,000 cycles before shear bond strength was tested. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Wilcoxon two-sample rank sum test at the 5% level of significance.

RESULTS

Most groups had no or only minimal bond strength to densely sintered alumina after simulated aging. Panavia had the highest bond strength without silane/bonding agent application. Noribond with its silane/bonding agent revealed the highest overall bond strength, which was significantly greater than that of either Variolink or Panavia after silanization.

CONCLUSIONS

Resin cements revealed significantly different bond strengths, and the use of silane coupling and bonding agents had various effects on the resin bond to pure densely sintered alumina.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Selection of the proper cement/bonding system is fundamental to clinical long-term success of bonded alumina-based restorations. Noribond with its bonding agent and ceramic primer seem to fulfill these requirements under clinically relevant testing conditions.

Six-month storage-time evaluation of one-bottle adhesive systems to dentin

PURPOSE

The goal of this study was to evaluate the 1-week, 3-month, and 6-month performance of eight commercially available one-bottle adhesive systems to dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Lingual and buccal surfaces from human third molars were ground wet on 600-grit SiC paper to obtain a flat dentinal surface. The specimens were randomly divided into 24 groups (n = 10), which were established to measure the shear bond strengths of Bond-1 (B1), ONE-STEP (OS), OptiBond SOLO (OP), Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB), Single Bond (SB), STAE (ST), Syntac Sprint (SS), and Tenure Quick (TQ) after 1-week, 3-month, and 6-month water storage at 37 degrees C. One-bottle adhesives were applied according to manufacturers' instructions and Z100 composite cylinders were applied on the bonded dentinal surfaces. The 3-month water-storage groups were thermocycled for 1500 cycles at 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C and 6-month groups for 3000 cycles. After storage periods, specimens were tested in shear in a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min).

RESULTS

were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance and Tukey test. Results: The changes in shear bond strengths were not uniform over time. Over the test period, OS, PB, SB, and SS exhibited bond strength stability, however, SS presented low bond strengths on all tested periods. A significant decrease in bond strength was observed for B1, OP, ST, and TQ after the 6-month storage period.

The effect of thermocycling on the strength of porcelain laminate veneer (PLV) materials

OBJECTIVES

Postoperative cracking and resultant failure of porcelain laminate veneer (PLV) restorations are considered a possible consequence of thermal variations that the restoration is likely to encounter 'in service'. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of thermocycling on the development of surface flaws on the 'fit' surface of PLV restorations.

METHODS

Sets of 30 Vitadur-Alpha dentin porcelain discs (15 mm diameter, 0.9 mm thickness) were thermocycled on the glazed and unglazed surfaces at three different temperature regimes to simulate the conditions encountered in service. Mean fracture strengths, standard deviations and associated Weibull Moduli (m) were determined using bi-axial fracture (ball-on-ring).

RESULTS

The student-t-test analysis revealed a significant difference (P<0.05) between the porcelain control group mean strength values exposed on the glazed and unglazed surfaces. The one-way analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between the means of the porcelain specimens exposed to different thermocycling regimes. However, a discontinuity existed at the lower strength values in the survival probability plots for porcelain specimen groups that were thermocycled.

SIGNIFICANCE

Large flaws on the surface of the specimens may become extended due to the thermocycling regimes imposed. The greater the tensile stresses imposed on the disc specimen surface by the thermocycling regimes employed the more likely the flaws are to become extended resulting in premature fracture. Consequently, the discontinuity in the survival probability distributions may be attributed to a different defect mechanism (possibly an extension of large surface flaws) superimposed on the distributions at these low values of strength.

The effect of two configuration factors, time, and thermal cycling on resin to dentin bond strengths

Most in vitro testing of bonding systems is performed using specimens made in a mold with a low configuration (C) factor (ratio of bonded/unbonded surfaces) whereas clinically the C-factor is usually much greater. This study compared the effect of thermal cycling on the measured shear bond strength of 3M Single Bond dental adhesive bonded to dentin using molds with two different C-factors. The hypothesis was that neither C-factor nor thermal cycling would affect measured bond strengths. Resin composite was bonded to human dentin in cylindrical molds with an internal diameter of 3.2mm and either 1mm or 2.5mm deep. The 1mm deep molds had a C-factor of 2.2 and the 2.5mm deep molds had a C-factor of 4.1. Specimens were debonded either 10min after they had been bonded to dentin, or after they had been stored for 7 days in water at 37+/-1 degrees C, or after thermal cycling 5000 times for 7 days. Two-way ANOVA showed that overall both the C-factor and the storage condition had a significant effect on bond strength (p<0.001). There was a significant interaction (p<0.001) between the C-factor and how the specimens had been stored. The GLM/LSMEANS procedure with Sidak's adjustment for multiple comparisons showed that overall the specimens made in the mold with a high C-factor (4.1) had a lower bond strength than those that had been made in the mold with a lower (2.2) C-factor (p<0.001). Thermal cycling had a negative effect on the bond strength only for specimens made in molds with a C-factor of 4.1 (p<0.001).

Effect of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of a cyanoacrylate orthodontic adhesive

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of a cyanoacrylate adhesive system, specifically 24 hours after bonding when the adhesive has achieved most of its bond strength and after thermocycling. Forty freshly extracted human molars were collected and stored in a solution of 0.1% (weight/volume) thymol. The teeth were cleaned, polished, and randomly separated into 2 groups: group I, cyanoacrylate adhesive debonded after 24 hours immersion in deionized water at 37 degrees C; and group II, cyanoacrylate adhesive debonded after thermocycling at 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C. The results of the t test comparing the 2 groups (t = 6.84) indicated significant differences between them (P =.0001). The cyanoacrylate adhesive at 24 hours had significantly greater shear bond strength (macro x = 7.1 +/- 3.3 MPa) than after thermocycling 500 times between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C (macro x = 1.5 +/- 1.4 MPa). The findings indicated that the cyanoacrylate adhesive tested has clinically adequate shear bond strength at 24 hours after initial bonding but loses about 80% of its strength after thermocycling. The clinician should consider all properties of the adhesive, including no need for a curing light, working time of 5 seconds before the adhesive starts to set, and the significant decrease in bond strength after thermocycling.

Bond durability of the resin-bonded and silane treated ceramic surface

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to explore methods for improving the ceramic-silane-resin bond strength of silica-based ceramics, such that it may be possible to eliminate the hazardous process of acid etching these dental ceramics with hydrofluoric acid (HF).

METHODS

Ni/Cr rods were prepared with ceramic facings, which were polished to a 1 microm finish. A silane coupling agent was applied to the ceramic surface using seven different procedures. Specimens were bonded using a luting resin and the tensile bond strength was measured at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. One bonding procedure was selected and used for the comparison of four ceramic surface preparations consisting of; 1 microm polish, gritblasted (50 microm alumina), etched with 10% HF, and gritblasted and etched. The durability of the bond was assessed by (1) storing the specimens in water at 37 degrees C for different time periods up to 3 months, (2) thermal cycling, and (3) storing in water at 100 degrees C for 24h.

RESULTS

The results showed that one bonding procedure to a polished ceramic surface gave better results for the tensile bond strength of the resin to the smooth ceramic surface and that the tensile bond strength was not significantly different from the gritblasted, etched or gritblasted and etched groups (P>0.05). There was no deterioration in the tensile bond strength for any of the groups after water storage for up to 3 months or after thermal cycling (P>0.05). The silane bond was also capable of resisting hydrolytic attack in boiling water.

SIGNIFICANCE

The results indicate that a durable resin-ceramic tensile bond can be obtained by appropriate silane application without the need for HF acid etching the ceramic surface.

Shear bond strengths of 2 intraoral porcelain repair systems to porcelain or metal substrates

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

When clinical fractures of the ceramic veneer on ceramometal can be repaired, the need for remake can be eliminated or postponed. A number of ceramic repair materials are available; bond strength data would be useful for predicting the success of a given repair system.

PURPOSE

This in vitro study evaluated shear bond strengths of 2 porcelain repair systems intended for intraoral bonding of resin to porcelain and metal.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty cylindrical specimens were fabricated with feldspathic porcelain and/or a high noble alloy: 20 porcelain (P), 20 porcelain and metal (PM), and 20 metal (M). Specimens were divided into subgroups of 10, and resin composite cylinders were bonded with 1 of 2 systems: CoJet-System (CJ) or Ceramic Repair (CR). Bonded specimens were stored in 37 degrees C distilled water for 24 hours before being thermocycled at 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C for 300 cycles with a 30-second dwell time. The specimens then were stored for an additional 8 days before being subjected to shear force in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Stress at failure was calculated in MPa, and mode of failure was recorded. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to the data. Comparisons between substrates were made with the Duncan multiple range test (P <.05), and differences between the 2 repair systems within like substrate groups were examined with the Student t test.

RESULTS

Bonding groups exhibited the following values in megapascals: PM-CR = 19.3 +/- 4.1; PM-CJ = 25.0 +/- 3.1; M-CR = 14.3 +/- 4.9; M-CJ = 23.0 +/- 2.3; P-CR = 18.3 +/- 4.2; P-CJ = 22.4 +/- 5.6. The ANOVA results showed significant differences between the CJ and CR groups. The Student t test revealed that the mean data for the CJ groups were significantly higher than for the CR groups (P <.05). The Duncan multiple range test demonstrated significant differences between the PM and M groups (P <.05) for the CR system only.

CONCLUSION

Under the conditions of this study, CJ achieved significantly higher bond strengths to PM and M substrates. Significant differences in strength were found between PM and M, but only within the CR system.

[In vitro study of marginal microleakage in dental caries treated with Er:YAG laser and restored with esthetic materials]

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate marginal microleakage in class V preparations submitted to treatment with Er:YAG laser and restored with aesthetic materials. Sixty human molars were selected and class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual aspects of their cervical thirds. The restorative technique followed the instructions of the manufacturers. The samples were divided in 3 groups of 20 teeth each: Group 1--control; Group 2--Er:YAG laser was applied on the enamel margin before the restoration was placed; Group 3--a thin layer of calcium hydroxide was applied on the axial wall before the restoration was placed. Each group was divided in 4 sub-groups and the teeth were restored with different aesthetic materials. All samples were submitted to thermocycling and stained with 50% silver nitrate. Based on the obtained results, we could conclude that there are statistically significant differences between the 12 experimental conditions tested. The samples which presented the greatest microleakage were those treated with Er:YAG laser and restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement, followed by those that received Er:YAG laser and the sandwich technique, the cavities restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement and those restored by means of the sandwich technique, in this order.

Effect of thione primers on bonding of noble metal alloys with an adhesive resin

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of two metal conditioners on the bond durability of an adhesive resin joined to noble metal alloys by comparing pre- and post-thermocycling bond strengths.

METHODS

Two different sizes of disk specimens (10 and 8mm in diameter by 2.5mm thickness) were prepared from silver-indium (Ag-In-Zn, Salivan), silver-palladium-copper-gold (Ag-Pd-Cu, Castwell M.C.12), metal-ceramic gold (Au-Pt-Pd, Degudent-Universal), metal-ceramic palladium (Pd-Ga-Co, PTM 88), type IV gold (type IV, Casting Gold) alloys, and pure silver (pure Ag). The specimens were air-abraded with 50-microm grain sized alumina, conditioned either with a thiouracil primer (Metaltite) or with a thione-phosphate primer (Alloy Primer), then bonded with an adhesive resin (Super-Bond Opaque). Shear bond strengths were determined both before and after repeated thermocycling (4 degrees C and 60 degrees C, 1min each, 100, 000cycles). The results were compared by analysis of variance and post-hoc multiple comparison intervals.

RESULTS

The average post-thermocycling bond strengths in MPa (n=8) generated with the thiouracil primed and thione-phosphate primed groups, respectively, were: 3.4 and 5.8 for the Ag-In-Zn alloy, 40.4 and 37.7 for the Ag-Pd-Cu alloy, 26.4 and 33.5 for the Au-Pt-Pd alloy, 27.4 and 36.6 for the Pd-Ga-Co alloy, 40.2 and 40.3 for the type IV alloy, and 37.3 and 32.4 for the pure Ag. The Ag-In-Zn alloy exhibited significantly lower bond strength than the other alloys, whereas the Ag-Pd-Cu and type IV alloys exhibited the greatest magnitude of bond strength for both primers (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

It can be concluded that the combined use of either of the two thione primers and the adhesive resin is effective for bonding the metal/alloys examined, with the exception of the Ag-In-Zn alloy.
