Highly Enantioselective Synthesis of [1,2,4]Triazino[5,4-a]isoquinoline Derivatives via (3 + 3) Cycloaddition Reactions of Diazo Compounds and Isoquinolinium Methylides

An array of chiral [1,2,4]triazino[5,4-a]isoquinoline derivatives were obtained in excellent yields (up to 98%) and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) via a new highly asymmetric (3 + 3) cycloaddition reaction of diazo compounds and isoquinolinium methylides, with a bifunctional chiral phase-transfer catalyst (PTC). Density functional theory calculations show that PTC has a bridge role in the deprotonation/protonation process. The obtained products were transformed into densely functionalized polycyclic heterocompounds with multiple stereocenters.

Homogeneous Carbon Capture and Catalytic Hydrogenation: Toward a Chemical Hydrogen Battery System

Recent developments of CO₂ capture and subsequent catalytic hydrogenation to C1 products are discussed and evaluated in this Perspective. Such processes can become a crucial part of a more sustainable energy economy in the future. The individual steps of this catalytic carbon capture and usage (CCU) approach also provide the basis for chemical hydrogen batteries. Here, specifically the reversible CO₂/formic acid (or bicarbonate/formate salts) system is presented, and the utilized catalysts are discussed.

Electrocatalytic water oxidation from a mixed linker MOF based on NU-1000 with an integrated ruthenium-based metallo-linker

A novel tetratopic metallo-linker, [Ru(tda)(py(PhCOOH)₂)₂], 1, (tda = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-dicarboxylate; py(PhCOOH)₂ = (4,4'-(pyridine-3,5-diyl)dibenzoic acid), that is structurally based on one of the most active molecular water oxidation catalysts has been prepared and fully characterized, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 bears geometric similarities to H₄TBAPy (H₄TBAPy = 4,4',4'',4'''-(pyrene-1,3,6,8-tetrayl)tetrabenzoic acid), i.e. the native linker in NU-1000, which offers the possibility to synthesize NU-1000-Ru mixed linker MOFs solvothermally. Mixed linker MOF formation was demonstrated by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Ru linker incorporation confirmed by FT-IR, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). It was found that the Ru contents in the final mixed linker MOFs correlate with the amount of Ru linker present during solvothermal synthesis, albeit not in a linear fashion. The cyclic voltammograms (CV) of the mixed linker MOFs are largely dominated by TBAPy-based oxidations with features attributed to 1. Interestingly, Ru linkers near the crystal surface are oxidized directly by interfacial hole transfer form the electrode, while those in the crystal interior can be oxidized indirectly from oxidized TBAPy linkers at more anodic potential. Upon repeated scanning, the CVs show the appearance of new waves that arise from irreversible TBAPy oxidation, as well as from the activation of the Ru-based water oxidation catalyst. Of the materials prepared, the one with the highest Ru content, NU-1000-Ru_high, was shown to catalyze the electrochemical oxidation of water to dioxygen. The Faradaic efficiency (FE) of the construct is 37%, due to water oxidation being accompanied by oxidative transformations of the TBAPy linkers. Despite the low FE, NU-1000-Ru_high is still among the best MOF-based water oxidation catalysts, operating by a unique co-linker mediated hole-transport mechanism to supply oxidizing equivalents also to catalysts in the crystal interior.

Beyond the Exploration of Muicle (Justicia spicigera): Reviewing Its Biological Properties, Bioactive Molecules and Materials Chemistry

In recent years, the research community is tremendously investigating unexplored plants and herbals as they represent a potential source of various biomolecules, which not only contribute to nutrition but also to human health. In fact, Muicle (Justicia spicigera) has attracted the attention of scientists thanks to its multiple biological activities associated with the phytochemicals and specific biomolecules present in this plant. In this review, an evidence on current development works assaying the potential biological properties of Muicle is given. Here, we introduce the key biologically active molecules ascribed to such properties, along with the mechanism of action and interaction. Although the utilization of this plant has been majorly focused on traditional medicine, specific applications in terms of production of new feedstocks and nanomaterials, and developments of functional foods and formulations, are also a current direction towards the exploitation of this natural source. Therefore, this review reports the main outcomes of current research towards the utilization of biomolecules and other elements of the plant in new fields of research such as materials chemistry.

Biomimetic Exosomes: A New Generation of Drug Delivery System

Most of the naked drugs, including small molecules, inorganic agents, and biomacromolecule agents, cannot be used directly for disease treatment because of their poor stability and undesirable pharmacokinetic behavior. Their shortcomings might seriously affect the exertion of their therapeutic effects. Recently, a variety of exogenous and endogenous nanomaterials have been developed as carriers for drug delivery. Among them, exosomes have attracted great attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, low toxicity, and ability to overcome biological barriers. However, exosomes used as drug delivery carriers have significant challenges, such as low yields, complex contents, and poor homogeneity, which limit their application. Engineered exosomes or biomimetic exosomes have been fabricated through a variety of approaches to tackle these drawbacks. We summarized recent advances in biomimetic exosomes over the past decades and addressed the opportunities and challenges of the next-generation drug delivery system.

Ferroelectric Lithography in Single-Component Organic Enantiomorphic Ferroelectrics

Organic ferroelectrics are flexible, lightweight, and bio-friendly, promising for bio-harmonized electronic devices, while their ferroelectric lithography remains relatively unexplored. Here, by introducing homochirality and ZE photoisomerization, we obtained a pair of organic enantiomorphic ferroelectrics, di(benzylamino)-substituted derivatives of muconic acids, the first ferroelectrics in the muconic family. Their ferroelectric and chiral features were confirmed by the polarization-electric field hysteresis loops and circular dichroism spectra, respectively. Piezoresponse force microscopy measurements demonstrate that the desired domain structure can be precisely achieved by applying a local electric field on a predefined pattern in their thin films. Moreover, thermogravimetric analyses reveal that their ferroelectricity can persist up to above 550 K. The precise pattern lithography and excellent thermal stability make them competitive candidates for ferroelectric lithography.

Multiple Promotional Effects of Vanadium Oxide on Boron Nitride for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane

Featuring high olefin selectivity, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has emerged recently as an attractive catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). Herein, we report that dispersion of vanadium oxide onto BN facilitates the oxyfunctionalization of BN to generate more BO _x active sites to catalyze ODHP via the Eley-Rideal mechanism and concurrently produce nitric oxide to initiate additional gas-phase radical chemistry and to introduce redox VO _x sites to catalyze ODHP via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, all of which promote the catalytic performance of BN for ODHP. As a result, loading 0.5 wt % V onto BN has doubled the yield of light alkene (C₂-C₃) at 540-580 °C, and adding an appropriate concentration of NO in the reactants further enhances the catalytic performance. These results provide a potential strategy for developing efficient h-BN-based catalysts through coupling gas-phase and surface reactions for the ODHP process.

An animal derivative-free medium enhances Lactobacillus johnsonii LJO02 supernatant selective efficacy against the methicillin (oxacillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus virulence through key-metabolites

The spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as the skin commensal Staphylococcus aureus, is a worldwide health challenge; new methods to counteract opportunistic pathogen growth and virulence are urgent. We compared the activity of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LR06 (DSM 21981) and Lactobacillus johnsonii LJO02 (DSM 33828) cell-free supernatants (CFSs) produced in the conventional animal derivative-based MRS medium and an innovative animal derivative-free broth (TIL) versus the MDR S. aureus (ATCC 43300). CFS influence was assessed towards the viability, metabolic activity, and ability to form biofilm of the MDR strain through optical density, alamarBlue assay, and crystal violet staining; their content in short-chain fatty acids, lactic acid, and proteins was analysed via high-resolution mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. All CFSs reduce viable and metabolically active S. aureus, being TIL more efficient compared to MRS in stimulating lactic acid bacteria metabolism and decreasing S. aureus biofilm formation. Particularly, the CFS from LJO02 grown in TIL has the best efficacy, revealing a high amount of lactic acid and 59 peculiar proteins; its effectiveness is partially maintained upon trypsin and proteinase K treatments, but not by pepsin and pH basification. Therefore, antagonistic CFSs may represent a strategic prevention approach, with bacteriotherapeutic and bio-repair potential.

New Strategies for Direct Methane-to-Methanol Conversion from Active Learning Exploration of 16 Million Catalysts

Despite decades of effort, no earth-abundant homogeneous catalysts have been discovered that can selectively oxidize methane to methanol. We exploit active learning to simultaneously optimize methane activation and methanol release calculated with machine learning-accelerated density functional theory in a space of 16 M candidate catalysts including novel macrocycles. By constructing macrocycles from fragments inspired by synthesized compounds, we ensure synthetic realism in our computational search. Our large-scale search reveals that low-spin Fe(II) compounds paired with strong-field (e.g., P or S-coordinating) ligands have among the best energetic tradeoffs between hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and methanol release. This observation contrasts with prior efforts that have focused on high-spin Fe(II) with weak-field ligands. By decoupling equatorial and axial ligand effects, we determine that negatively charged axial ligands are critical for more rapid release of methanol and that higher-valency metals [i.e., M(III) vs M(II)] are likely to be rate-limited by slow methanol release. With full characterization of barrier heights, we confirm that optimizing for HAT does not lead to large oxo formation barriers. Energetic span analysis reveals designs for an intermediate-spin Mn(II) catalyst and a low-spin Fe(II) catalyst that are predicted to have good turnover frequencies. Our active learning approach to optimize two distinct reaction energies with efficient global optimization is expected to be beneficial for the search of large catalyst spaces where no prior designs have been identified and where linear scaling relationships between reaction energies or barriers may be limited or unknown.

Functionalization of Nanoparticulate Drug Delivery Systems and Its Influence in Cancer Therapy

Research into the application of nanocarriers in the delivery of cancer-fighting drugs has been a promising research area for decades. On the other hand, their cytotoxic effects on cells, low uptake efficiency, and therapeutic resistance have limited their therapeutic use. However, the urgency of pressing healthcare needs has resulted in the functionalization of nanoparticles' (NPs) physicochemical properties to improve clinical outcomes of new, old, and repurposed drugs. This article reviews recent research on methods for targeting functionalized nanoparticles to the tumor microenvironment (TME). Additionally, the use of relevant engineering techniques for surface functionalization of nanocarriers (liposomes, dendrimers, and mesoporous silica) and their critical roles in overcoming the current limitations in cancer therapy-targeting ligands used for targeted delivery, stimuli strategies, and multifunctional nanoparticles-were all reviewed. The limitations and future perspectives of functionalized nanoparticles were also finally discussed. Using relevant keywords, published scientific literature from all credible sources was retrieved. A quick search of the literature yielded almost 400 publications. The subject matter of this review was addressed adequately using an inclusion/exclusion criterion. The content of this review provides a reasonable basis for further studies to fully exploit the potential of these nanoparticles in cancer therapy.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Cyclization of Unsaturated N-Acyl Sulfonamides: a Diverted Mukaiyama Hydration Reaction

The cycloisomerization of β-, γ-, and δ-unsaturated N-acyl sulfonamides to N-sulfonyl lactams and imidates is reported. This transformation is effected in the presence of a Co^III(salen) catalyst using t-BuOOH or air as the oxidant. The method shows good functional group tolerance (alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, ether, N-Boc) and furnishes an underexplored class of cyclic building blocks. The strong solvent dependence of the transformation is investigated, and the synthetic versatility of the N-sulfonyl imidate product class is highlighted.

Modulation of Perovskite Grain Boundaries by Electron Donor-Acceptor Zwitterions R,R-Diphenylamino-phenyl-pyridinium-(CH2) n -sulfonates: All-Round Improvement on the Solar Cell Performance

Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted intense attention because of their insignificant hysteresis and low-temperature fabrication process. However, the efficiencies of inverted PSCs are still inferior to those of commercialized silicon solar cells. Also, the poor stability of PSCs is one of the major impedances to commercialization. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized a new series of electron donor (R,R-diphenylamino) and acceptor (pyridimium-(CH₂) _n -sulfonates) zwitterions as a boundary modulator and systematically investigated their associated interface properties. Comprehensive physical and optoelectronic studies verify that these zwitterions provide a four-in-one functionality: balancing charge carrier transport, suppressing less-coordinated Pb²⁺ defects, enhancing moisture resistance, and reducing ion migration. Although each functionality may have been reported by specific passivating molecules, a strategy that simultaneously regulates the charge-transfer balance and three other functionalities has not yet been developed. The results are to make an omnidirectional improvement of PSCs. Among all zwitterions, 4-(4-(4-(di-(4-methoxylphenyl)amino)phenyl)propane-1-ium-1-yl)butane-1-sulfonate (OMeZC3) optimizes the balance hole/electron mobility ratio of perovskite to 0.91, and the corresponding PSCs demonstrate a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 23.15% free from hysteresis, standing out as one of the champion PSCs with an inverted structure. Importantly, the OMeZC3-modified PSC exhibits excellent long-term stability, maintaining almost its initial PCE after being stored at 80% relative humidity for 35 days.

A Theoretical Study of the Sensing Mechanism of a Schiff-Based Sensor for Fluoride

In the current work, we studied the sensing process of the sensor (E)-2-((quinolin-8ylimino) methyl) phenol (QP) for fluoride anion (F^-) with a "turn on" fluorescent response by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The proton transfer process and the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process of QP have been explored by using potential energy curves as functions of the distance of N-H and dihedral angle C-N=C-C both in the ground and the excited states. According to the calculated results, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of QP and the fluorescent response for F^- have been fully explored. These results indicate that the current calculations completely reproduce the experimental results and provide compelling evidence for the sensing mechanism of QP for F^-.

The Limited Palette for Photonic Block-Copolymer Materials: A Historical Problem or a Practical Limitation?

Block-copolymer self-assembly has proven to be an effective route for the fabrication of photonic films and, more recently, photonic pigments. However, despite extensive research on this topic over the past two decades, the palette of monomers and polymers employed to produce such structurally colored materials has remained surprisingly limited. In this Scientific Perspective, the commonly used block-copolymer systems reported in the literature are summarized (considering both linear and brush architectures) and their use is rationalized from the point of view of both their historical development and physicochemical constraints. Finally, the current challenges facing the field are discussed and promising new areas of research are highlighted to inspire the community to pursue new directions.

Overcoming Spectral Dependence: A General Strategy for Developing Far-Red and Near-Infrared Ultra-Fluorogenic Tetrazine Bioorthogonal Probes

Bioorthogonal fluorogenic dyes are indispensable tools in wash-free bioimaging of specific biological targets. However, the fluorogenicity of existing tetrazine-based bioorthogonal probes deteriorates as the emission wavelength shifts towards the NIR window, greatly limiting their applications in live cells and tissues. Herein, we report a generalizable molecular design strategy to construct ultra-fluorogenic dyes via a simple substitution at the meso-positions of various far-red and NIR fluorophores. Our probes demonstrate significant fluorescence turn-on ratios (10² -10³ -fold) in the range 586-806 nm. These results will greatly expand the applications of bioorthogonal chemistry in NIR bioimaging and biosensing.

Tandem Macrolactone Synthesis: Total Synthesis of (-)-Exiguolide by a Macrocyclization/Transannular Pyran Cyclization Strategy

Tetrahydropyran-containing macrolactones were synthesized by integrating Meyer-Schuster rearrangement, macrocyclic ring-closing metathesis, and transannular oxa-Michael addition under gold and ruthenium catalysis. Single-step access to a variety of 14- to 20-membered macrolactones containing a tetrahydropyran ring was possible from readily available linear precursors in good yields and with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivity. A 13-step synthesis of (-)-exiguolide, an anticancer marine macrolide, showcased the feasibility of our tandem reaction sequence for macrolactone synthesis and also demonstrated the power of transannular reactions for rapid assembly of the tetrahydropyran rings of the target natural product.

Noble classical and quantum approach to model the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles to enhance the sensitivity of optoplasmonic sensors

The bright light obtained from the quantum principle has a key role in the construction of optical sensors. Yet, theoretical and experimental work highlights the challenges of overcoming the high cost and low efficiency of such sensors. Therefore, we report a metallic nanoparticle-based metasurface plasmons polariton using quantum and classical models. We have investigated the material properties, absorption cross-section, scattering cross-section, and efficiency of the classical model. By quantizing light-matter interaction, the quantum features of light - degree of squeezing, correlation, and entanglement are quantified numerically and computationally. In addition, we note the penetration depth and propagation length from a hybrid model in order to enhance the optoplasmonic sensor performance for imaging, diagnosing, and early perception of cancer cells with label-free, direct, and real-time detection. Our study findings conclude that the frequency of incident light, size, shape, and type of nanoparticles has a significant impact on the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles and the nonlinear optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are dynamic, enhancing the sensitivity of the optoplasmonic sensor. Moreover, the resulting bright light shows the systematic potential for further medical image processing.

Tetrahedral M4(μ4-O) Motifs Beyond Zn: Efficient One-Pot Synthesis of Oxido-Amidate Clusters via a Transmetalation/Hydrolysis Approach

While zinc μ4-oxido-centered complexes are widely used as versatile precursors and building units of functional materials, the synthesis of their analogues based on other transition metals is highly underdeveloped. Herein, we present the first efficient systematic approach for the synthesis of homometallic [M4(μ4-O)L6]-type clusters incorporating divalent transition-metal centers, coated by bridging monoanionic organic ligands. As a proof of concept, we prepared a series of charge-neutral metal-oxido benzamidates, [M4(μ4-O) (NHCOPh)6] (M = Fe, Co, Zn), including iron(II) and cobalt(II) clusters not accessible before. The resulting complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Detailed structural analysis showed interesting self-assembly of the tetrahedral clusters into 2D honeycomb-like supramolecular layers driven by hydrogen bonds in the proximal secondary coordination sphere. Moreover, we modeled the magnetic properties of new iron (II) and cobalt (II) clusters, which display a general tendency for antiferromagnetic coupling of the μ4-O/μ-benzamidate-bridged metal centers. The developed synthetic procedure is potentially easily extensible to other M(II)-oxido systems, which will likely pave the way to new oxido clusters with interesting optoelectronic and self-assembly properties and, as a result, will allow for the development of new functional materials not achievable before.

Identification of a Steric Zipper Motif in the Amyloidogenic Core of Human Cystatin C and Its Use for the Design of Self-Assembling Peptides

Amyloid fibrils have been known for many years. Unfortunately, their fame stems from negative aspects related to amyloid diseases. Nevertheless, due to their properties, they can be used as interesting nanomaterials. Apart from their remarkable stability, amyloid fibrils may be regarded as a kind of a storage medium and as a source of active peptides. In many cases, their structure may guarantee a controlled and slow release of peptides in their active form; therefore, they can be used as a potential nanomaterial in drug delivery systems. In addition, amyloid fibrils display controllable stiffness, flexibility, and satisfactory mechanical strength. In addition, they can be modified and functionalized very easily. Understanding the structure and genesis of amyloid assemblies derived from a broad range of amyloidogenic proteins could help to better understand and use this unique material. One of the factors responsible for amyloid aggregation is the steric zipper. Here, we report the discovery of steric zipper-forming peptides in the sequence of the amyloidogenic protein, human cystatin C (HCC). The ability of short peptides derived from this fragment of HCC to form fibrillar structures with defined self-association characteristics and the factors influencing this aggregation are also presented in this paper.

Hiding in Plain Sight: The Issue of Hidden Variables

Here we discuss "hidden variables", which are typically introduced during an experiment as a consequence of the application of two independent variables together to create a stimulus. With increased sophistication in modern chemical biology tools and related precision interrogation techniques, hidden variables have become integral to many chemical biologists' routine experiments. For instance, they can appear in the use of light-activatable chemical probes (e.g., μMap, T-REX), or stimulus-induced enzyme activation (e.g., APEX). Unfortunately, control experiments assess only how independent variables affect measured outcomes and not the multiple differences between the two independent variables and the twain. We outline ways to account for potential hidden variables in experimental design and data interpretation as a means to aid developers of new methods, particularly those involving light-driven techniques, chemical activation, or biorthogonal chemistries, to better incorporate well-controlled procedures.

Controlled Synthesis and Photoresponsive Properties of Spiropyran End-Functionalized Poly(vinyl ether)s

Due to the need to develop smart materials for a variety of applications such as catalysts and drug delivery, the development of photoresponsive polymers is receiving increasing attention. In particular, the photoisomerization of spiropyran (SP), unlike many other photoresponsive compounds, has attracted attention because it dramatically changes not only the molecular structure but also the polarity of the molecule. However, in most cases where SP is used as a photoresponsive functional group, SP is introduced in the side chain of the polymer, and few cases have been reported in which SP is introduced at the end of the polymer chain. Therefore, we designed a new amphipathic poly(vinyl ether) with an SP moiety at the end of the polymer chain. First, an initiator having an SP moiety was synthesized and used for living cationic polymerization to synthesize a poly(vinyl ether) bearing an SP moiety at the end of the polymer chain. Furthermore, we investigated the photoresponsive properties of the obtained polymers, we found that self-assembly of the amphiphilic polymers could be controlled by photoirradiation.

The Impact of Lifestyle on Prostate Cancer: A Road to the Discovery of New Biomarkers

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers among men, and its incidence has been rising through the years. Several risk factors have been associated with this disease and unhealthy lifestyles and inflammation were appointed as major contributors for PCa development, progression, and severity. Despite the advantages associated with the currently used diagnostic tools [prostate-specific antigen(PSA) serum levels and digital rectal examination (DRE)], the development of effective approaches for PCa diagnosis is still necessary. Finding lifestyle-associated proteins that may predict the development of PCa seems to be a promising strategy to improve PCa diagnosis. In this context, several biomarkers have been identified, including circulating biomarkers (CRP, insulin, C-peptide, TNFα-R2, adiponectin, IL-6, total PSA, free PSA, and p2PSA), urine biomarkers (PCA3, guanidine, phenylacetylglycine, and glycine), proteins expressed in exosomes (afamin, vitamin D-binding protein, and filamin A), and miRNAs expressed in prostate tissue (miRNA-21, miRNA-101, and miRNA-182). In conclusion, exploring the impact of lifestyle and inflammation on PCa development and progression may open doors to the identification of new biomarkers. The discovery of new PCa diagnostic biomarkers should contribute to reduce overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

Obtaining QM/MM binding free energies in the SAMPL8 drugs of abuse challenge: indirect approaches

Accurately predicting free energy differences is essential in realizing the full potential of rational drug design. Unfortunately, high levels of accuracy often require computationally expensive QM/MM Hamiltonians. Fortuitously, the cost of employing QM/MM approaches in rigorous free energy simulation can be reduced through the use of the so-called “indirect” approach to QM/MM free energies, in which the need for QM/MM simulations is avoided via a QM/MM “correction” at the classical endpoints of interest. Herein, we focus on the computation of QM/MM binding free energies in the context of the SAMPL8 Drugs of Abuse host–guest challenge. Of the 5 QM/MM correction coupled with force-matching submissions, PM6-D3H4/MM ranked submission proved the best overall QM/MM entry, with an RMSE from experimental results of 2.43 kcal/mol (best in ranked submissions), a Pearson’s correlation of 0.78 (second-best in ranked submissions), and a Kendall \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\tau$$\end{document}τ correlation of 0.52 (best in ranked submissions).

Machine Learning Approach for Application-Tailored Nanolubricants’ Design

The fascinating tribological phenomenon of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) observed at the nanoscale was confirmed in our numerous macroscale experiments. We designed and employed CNT-containing nanolubricants strictly for polymer lubrication. In this paper, we present the experiment characterising how the CNT structure determines its lubricity on various types of polymers. There is a complex correlation between the microscopic and spectral properties of CNTs and the tribological parameters of the resulting lubricants. This confirms indirectly that the nature of the tribological mechanisms driven by the variety of CNT–polymer interactions might be far more complex than ever described before. We propose plasmonic interactions as an extension for existing models describing the tribological roles of nanomaterials. In the absence of quantitative microscopic calculations of tribological parameters, phenomenological strategies must be employed. One of the most powerful emerging numerical methods is machine learning (ML). Here, we propose to use this technique, in combination with molecular and supramolecular recognition, to understand the morphology and macro-assembly processing strategies for the targeted design of superlubricants.

Optimization of Alpha-Amylase Production by a Local Bacillus paramycoides Isolate and Immobilization on Chitosan-Loaded Barium Ferrite Nanoparticles

We set out to isolate alpha-amylase producers from soil samples, optimize the production, and immobilize the enzyme on chitosan-loaded barium ferrite nanoparticles (CLBFNPs). Alpha-amylase producers were isolated on starch agar plates and confirmed by dinitrosalicylic acid assay. The potent isolate was identified by phenotypic methods, 16S-rRNA sequencing, and phylogenetic mapping. Sequential optimization of α-amylase production involved the use of Plackett–Burman (P–BD) and central composite designs (CCD), in addition to exposing the culture to different doses of gamma irradiation. Alpha-amylase was immobilized on CLBFNPs, and the nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, with energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray analysis. Forty-five α-amylase producers were isolated from 100 soil samples. The highest activity (177.12 ± 6.12 U/mg) was detected in the MS009 isolate, which was identified as Bacillus paramycoides. The activity increased to 222.3 ± 5.07 U/mg when using the optimal culture conditions identified by P–BD and CCD, and to 319.45 ± 4.91 U/mg after exposing the culture to 6 kGy. Immobilization of α-amylase on CLBFNPs resulted in higher activity (246.85 ± 6.76 U/mg) compared to free α-amylase (222.254 ± 4.89 U/mg), in addition to retaining activity for up to five cycles of usage. Gamma irradiation improved α-amylase production, while immobilization on CLBFNPs enhanced activity, facilitated enzyme recovery, and enabled its repetitive use.

Silica Aerogel Hybridized with Melamine-Terephthalaldehyde Polymer for In-Tube Solid-Phase Microextraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Environment Water

To improve the extraction performance of the silica aerogel, a melamine-terephthalaldehyde polymer was used to hybridize silica aerogel, and the hybridized aerogel was coated on the surface of stainless steel wire to prepare a fiber-filled extraction tube through placing four wires into a polyetheretherketone tube. The tube was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography, then the online extraction and detection were established. Several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were selected as the target analytes. Under the optimum extraction and desorption conditions, the limit of detection was as low as 3.0 ng L-1, and the linear range was 0.01-20.0 μg L-1. The enrichment factors of PAHs were in the range of 1724-2393. Three environmental water samples of mineral water, tap water and river water were analyzed by this method, and the recoveries that spiked at 1.0-10.0 μg L-1 were between 80.5-126%. It showed many advantages compared with other methods, such as better sensitivity, faster detection and online analysis.

Lanthanide extraction using a thiodiglycolamic acid extractant: effect of S-donor on lanthanide separation

Liquid-liquid extraction of lanthanide (Ln) ions was investigated using N,N-dioctylthiodiglycolamic acid (DOTDGAA), which is a sulfur donor ligand with an amide group and a carboxyl group connected by a thioether chain. The extraction performance and selectivity of DOTDGAA for Ln ions were compared with those of N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid (DODGAA), which is also an oxygen donor ligand with a similar chemical structure, to assess the effect of the soft/hard donor atom on Ln separation. DOTDGAA quantitatively extracted all Ln ions while being selective toward the light and middle Ln ions, in contrast to the selectivity of DODGAA for heavier Ln ions. Slope analysis demonstrated that the Ln³⁺ transfer using DOTDGAA proceeded through a proton-exchange reaction, forming a 1:3 complex, Ln(DOTDGAA)₃. The back-extraction of Ln ions from the extracting phase was successfully achieved under acidic conditions.

Acoustic, Phononic, Brillouin Light Scattering and Faraday Wave-Based Frequency Combs: Physical Foundations and Applications

Frequency combs (FCs)-spectra containing equidistant coherent peaks-have enabled researchers and engineers to measure the frequencies of complex signals with high precision, thereby revolutionising the areas of sensing, metrology and communications and also benefiting the fundamental science. Although mostly optical FCs have found widespread applications thus far, in general FCs can be generated using waves other than light. Here, we review and summarise recent achievements in the emergent field of acoustic frequency combs (AFCs), including phononic FCs and relevant acousto-optical, Brillouin light scattering and Faraday wave-based techniques that have enabled the development of phonon lasers, quantum computers and advanced vibration sensors. In particular, our discussion is centred around potential applications of AFCs in precision measurements in various physical, chemical and biological systems in conditions where using light, and hence optical FCs, faces technical and fundamental limitations, which is, for example, the case in underwater distance measurements and biomedical imaging applications. This review article will also be of interest to readers seeking a discussion of specific theoretical aspects of different classes of AFCs. To that end, we support the mainstream discussion by the results of our original analysis and numerical simulations that can be used to design the spectra of AFCs generated using oscillations of gas bubbles in liquids, vibrations of liquid drops and plasmonic enhancement of Brillouin light scattering in metal nanostructures. We also discuss the application of non-toxic room-temperature liquid-metal alloys in the field of AFC generation.

Microstructure Evolution and Its Correlation with Performance in Nitrogen-Containing Porous Carbon Prepared by Polypyrrole Carbonization: Insights from Hybrid Calculations

The preparation of nitrogen-containing porous carbon (NCPC) materials by controlled carbonization is an exciting topic due to their high surface area and good conductivity for use in the fields of electrochemical energy storage and conversion. However, the poor controllability of amorphous porous carbon prepared by carbonization has always been a tough problem due to the unclear carbonation mechanism, which thus makes it hard to reveal the microstructure-performance relationship. To address this, here, we comprehensively employed reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) simulations and first-principles calculations, together with machine learning technologies, to clarify the carbonation process of polypyrrole, including the deprotonation and formation of pore structures with temperature, as well as the relationship between microstructure, conductance, and pore size. This work constructed ring expressions for PPy thermal conversion at the atomic level. It revealed the structural factors that determine the conductivity and pore size of carbonized products. More significantly, physically interpretable machine learning models were determined to quantitatively express structure factors and performance structure-activity relationships. Our study also confirmed that deprotonation preferentially occurred by desorbing the dihydrogen atom on nitrogen atoms during the carbonization of PPy. This theoretical work clearly reproduces the microstructure evolution of polypyrrole on an atomic scale that is hard to do via experimentation, thus paving a new way to the design and development of nitrogen-containing porous carbon materials with controllable morphology and performance.

Tetraphenylethylene-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks with Strong Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence for Ultrasensitive Analysis through a Multiple Convertible Resonance Energy Transfer System

Since aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) combined the merits of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL), it has become a research hotspot recently. Herein, novel kinds of functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with strong AIECL were reported through doping tetraphenylethylene (TPE) into UiO-66. Due to the porosity and highly ordered topological structure that caused the confinement effect of MOFs, the molecular motion of TPE was effectively limited within UiO-66, resulting in strong AIE. Meanwhile, the large specific surface area and porous structure of UiO-66 allowed TPE to react with coreactants more effectively, which was beneficial to ECL. Thus, the TPE-functionalized UiO-66 (TPE-UiO-66) showed excellent AIECL performance surprisingly. Inspired by this, a multiple convertible ECL resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) system was constructed through a DNA Y structure that regulated the distance between the energy donor (TPE-UiO-66) and different energy acceptors (gold nanoparticles and Adriamycin). Furthermore, an ultrasensitive ECL biosensor for the detection of Mucin 1 (MUC1) was developed through the introduction of the novel ECL-RET system. In the presence of MUC1, the DNA Y structure was constructed, keeping the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) away from TPE-UiO-66. Then, Adriamycin (Dox) could be embedded in the DNA Y structure and act as an energy acceptor to receive the energy of TPE-UiO-66, which made the biosensor produce a strong ECL response. As expected, the developed ECL biosensor exhibited superior detection performance for MUC1. This work provided a novel way to realize AIECL and board the application of AIECL in analytical chemistry.

State-of-the-Art Organic- and Inorganic-Based Hollow Fiber Membranes in Liquid and Gas Applications: Looking Back and Beyond

The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Recent Advances of m6A Demethylases Inhibitors and Their Biological Functions in Human Diseases

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a post-transcriptional RNA modification and one of the most abundant types of RNA chemical modifications. m6A functions as a molecular switch and is involved in a range of biomedical aspects, including cardiovascular diseases, the central nervous system, and cancers. Conceptually, m6A methylation can be dynamically and reversibly modulated by RNA methylation regulatory proteins, resulting in diverse fates of mRNAs. This review focuses on m6A demethylases fat-mass- and obesity-associated protein (FTO) and alkB homolog 5 (ALKBH5), which especially erase m6A modification from target mRNAs. Recent advances have highlighted that FTO and ALKBH5 play an oncogenic role in various cancers, such as acute myeloid leukemias (AML), glioblastoma, and breast cancer. Moreover, studies in vitro and in mouse models confirmed that FTO-specific inhibitors exhibited anti-tumor effects in several cancers. Accumulating evidence has suggested the possibility of FTO and ALKBH5 as therapeutic targets for specific diseases. In this review, we aim to illustrate the structural properties of these two m6A demethylases and the development of their specific inhibitors. Additionally, this review will summarize the biological functions of these two m6A demethylases in various types of cancers and other human diseases.
